Chamber Update A Message from the President & CEO With the beautiful weather of spring comes a flurry of Chamber activities that are designed to serve our members in positive and diverse ways. Your chamber never stops working for businesses of the South Coast region with a single goal – economic growth for all of Rick Kidder, our member businesses. President & CEO In April, more than 100 businesses gathered at Greater New Bedford Vocational and Technical High School for a job fair that brought out several hundred job seekers from throughout the region. The attraction of talent throughout the area is essential to economic growth, and this chamber is committed to making sure that our businesses have access to unemployed and underemployed individuals from throughout the area. The labor market has been tightening, and companies are looking for people to help them grow. There is no greater investment than the investment in a quality workforce! This spring the Cape Cod Canal Region Chamber of Commerce and the New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce embarked on a new and exciting concept for the businesses physically located in Wareham. While both chambers serve that important and growing area, neither has a strong enough foothold in Wareham so we are launching an exciting “two-for-one” limited time offer to attract businesses to join both chambers for one low price. Marie Oliva, the president of the CCCRCC and we in New Bedford believe that a rising tide lifts all boats and our goal is to make certain that the businesses of Wareham receive the services of two strong chambers to help meet their business needs. With this new relationship will come cross-marketing opportunities for both chambers and a coordination of calendars to allow for businesses to involve themselves at the highest levels they desire.

One of the hallmarks of a strong chamber is connection to and influence on our elected officials. All of our state representatives and senators care deeply about the South Coast region, but that does not mean that they don’t need to hear from the business community on an ongoing basis about the needs, challenges and opportunities afforded through good public policy. Business votes, and elected officials need to listen to the businesses that hire and pay nearly every tax payer in the region. The June 2 Legislative Luncheon will feature every elected officials representing every community we serve, and the distinguished Phil Paleologos will moderate this important discussion. The business community is affected every day by decisions made at the State House, and the Chamber is redoubling its efforts to influence policy and advocate for business-friendly legislation. The backbone of any region’s success is the quality of our schools. Our June Good Morning SouthCoast reflects the commitment of the business community to preparing our young people for the world of work. The leadership of all of our regional school systems are dedicated to continuous improvement and to make certain that our children are prepared. Nothing can replace education as the key to advancement for an individual or a family, and our leadership believes strongly in giving our children all of the tools they need to succeed. It is an investment in our region’s success that pays dividends for generations. The Chamber is involved in serious endeavors, but never forgets the value of fun and camaraderie. Come to a Business After Hours. Be a part of important discussions that add wealth to our region. We thank you for your membership and endeavor to represent you well every day!

viewed this form of care with a stigma, and much of it institutionalized - so many afflicted were left with little quality of life and fulfillment. Today, LifeStream has grown as the region’s leading human services organizations and employs over 500 people in 39 different office and program locations. The six nominees for this year’s Large Business of the Year award were as follows: AFC Cable Systems, Inc., Brahmin Leather Works, Fernandes Masonry, Partridge Snow & Hahn LLP, Summit Retail Solutions, and Tegra Medical.

Loeb Corporation, Hampton Inn of Fairhaven/New Bedford, Jim’s Organic Coffee, Poyant Signs, and SERVPRO. Presented with “Non-Profit Organization of the Year” award was Child & Family Services, Inc.. Being one of the oldest non-profits in Southeastern Massachusetts, Child & Family Services, Inc. opened their doors in 1843 as the New Bedford Orphans’ Home to help children left homeless or without families. Since then, the New Bedford Orphans’ Home has had many faces, changing their name alongside changing times and attitudes towards the aid of disadvantaged children. Between 1910 and 1948, New Bedford Orphans’ Home became New Bedford Children’s Aid Society. Then, once again, during 19481999, New Bedford Children’s Aid society became known as New Bedford Child & Family Services. Which leads us into present time, where the organization goes by Child & Family Services, signifying their extended footprint well beyond New Bedford. The non-profit now offers more services than ever before, such as Outreach & Counselling programs, Psychiatry, Support Groups and many more.

Presented with “Small Business of the Year” award was SEASTREAK. Located on New Bedford’s historical waterfront, SEASTREAK offers high-speed catamaran transport to metropolitan New York, New Jersey, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. “Educational Institution of the Year” for 2017 was presented to Bristol Community College. Seven other non-profit and educational institutions were nominated for this year’s award, including Alma del Mar Charter School, Burgo Basketball Associations Interise, Mercy Meals and More, Our Sisters’ School, Veterans Transition House, and the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center. Nominations solicited from within the community, and reviewed by a selection committee comprised of Chamber members undertook this responsibility. The selection committee looked for companies who have balanced success with a strong commitment to the community. Each nominee rated on five criteria: number of employees, staying power, growth, social responsibility and innovation. To meet just a few of these goals is a significant accomplishment. The New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce extends its appreciation to BankFive for being a partner in this important program. Their commitment as the founding sponsor of the “Business of the Year Awards” program reflects their dedication to our community and their commitment to providing services to small businesses.

Every school day, 7,000 students become dropouts nationwide. That’s one every 26 seconds. The Greater New Bedford Connecting Activities Partnership needs volunteers to help address this crisis within the New Bedford area by delivering CHOICES, an interactive decision-making workshop that empowers teens to achieve academic success in pursuit of their career and life aspirations. Volunteer presenters from the local community are needed to deliver CHOICES to local 7th graders at Roosevelt Middle School in New Bedford on May 23rd, 2017, and May 24th, 2017. CHOICES is broken up into two 90-minute sessions, where presenters take students into the real world and through real life experiences. Exercises done throughout the session focus on academic self-discipline, time and money management, and goal setting. These hands-on activities allow students to recognize the fact that they have the power to make important future-impacting decisions right now. The seminar develops the ideas of time management, self-discipline and wise academic decision-making. This program exposes the students to important information about the education skills required for various occupations in today’s and tomorrow’s workplace. Presenters will stress how education achievement levels will either greatly limit or expand career choices and the ability to financially support oneself or a family. continued on page 5 3

Bouchard and President/CEO Eileen M. Danahey spoke about the strong lending year 2016 was for the Credit Union. Chairman Bouchard reported favorable numbers in several areas for 2016. St. Anne’s originated over $162 million in residential mortgage and equity loans while also closing $5.1 million in consumer financing and $45.3 million in member business loans, helping thousands of members achieve their financial goals. This was a 35% increase over last year and exceeded 2015 member business loan and mortgage loan originations by 96% and 60%, respectively. In addition, the Credit Union has specifically designed products to meet the needs of low to moderate-income households - in 2016 St. Anne’s granted 4.2 million dollars in real estate mortgages financed by the Massachusetts Housing Finance Agency. President/CEO Danahey reviewed the highlights of the past year – speaking about the increase in asset size to $891 million and deposits to $741 million. St. Anne’s serves over 57,000 members and remains one the largest financial institutions headquartered in Fall River. CEO Danahey stated that the Credit Union encourages all of its employees to become involved in the local community, by volunteering at events or serving as directors or advisors of community organizations. Employees volunteer hundreds of hours of their own free time and donate thousands of dollars in total to local organizations. She also mentioned the various accolades that St. Anne’s Credit Union received in 2016 – the Credit Union was selected as a leading Credit Union in Massachusetts by Banker & Tradesman and also named a part of Banker & Tradesman’s Fast 50 - a list of the 50 fastest growing lenders in Massachusetts. Commending the scholarship recipients, she also congratulated Jean Correia, one of the Credit Union’s mortgage originators recognized by Rhode Island Monthly Magazine as a ‘Five Star Mortgage Professional”, Robin Levesque on her promotion to Vice President of Branch Administration, and welcomed new additions to staff - Deborah Dion, Vice President of IT and Lee Zupkofska, Vice President of Marketing. SouthCoast Rail Update

,

by Paul Chasse, Chair, Rail to Boston Coalition CEO, Realtor® Association of Southeastern Massachusetts South Coast residents should feel heartened with the recent news from the Baker administration concerning commuter rail service to the region. The Governor has announced his support of the Middleboro option as a way to fast track commuter rail service to the South Coast’s underserved communities. The Rail to Boston Coalition appreciates Governor Baker’s action to keep the South Coast Rail project moving forward. With his administration’s endorsement of the Middleboro route, we are encouraged that commuter rail service will come and that the service will arrive years earlier than projected by the Stoughton route. New Bedford Area Chamber Joins The Massachusetts Business Alliance For Education By: Ian Abreu

The New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce recently announced that it has signed on as the newest Massachusetts Business Alliance for Education (MBAE) “Affiliate,” signaling the Chamber’s commitment to driving statewide educational improvements that will ensure all students get the education they need in pursuit of their “college and career readiness.”

“We never want to see our local employers having to outsource for its talent,” said New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce Business Development & Public Policy Manager, Ian Abreu. “By working closely with all of our local area high schools, vocational high schools, employers in the private sector, and our new partners over at the MBAE, we hope to help create a more streamlined workforce ‘pipeline’ which can help not The Worcester Regional Chamber of only meet the hiring needs of these Commerce, Concord Chamber of Com- companies, but additionally, help get merce, Plymouth Area Chamber of these students a little more ‘college and Commerce, Neponset Valley Chamber career ready.'” of Commerce, Springfield Regional Chamber of Commerce, Springfield Groups that have joined are responding Business Leaders for Education and to their members’ concerns on education TechNet have also recently joined this and the workforce expressed through coalition. their responses to a recent statewide

employer survey. 72% of Massachusetts employers say the schools need major or moderate change. Employers believe that there is much room for improvement in preparing our youth for success in postsecondary education and the workforce. Deep inequities in education that leave far too many students on the economic sidelines and a widening skills gap that makes it difficult for employers to find qualified candidates to fill open positions, must be addressed. Education is emerging as a key policy issue this year. The Massachusetts business community has played a significant and successful role over the past three decades in calling for improvements in education. With efforts underway to roll back education reforms that have made

Massachusetts number one in the nation in student achievement and with a need to better prepare all young people for a competitive economy, business groups are joining with MBAE to have a greater impact on that debate. MBAE is finalizing its legislative priorities and positions and looks forward to working with its Affiliates to be effective advocates in the years ahead.
