“Large Business of the Year” for 2017, was presented to LifeStream. With over thirty nominees this year, the painstaking task of narrowing down one of the largest turnouts to date was no easy one. Chamber Update A Message from the President & CEO With the beautiful weather of spring comes a flurry of Chamber activities that are designed to serve our members in positive and diverse ways. Your chamber never stops working for businesses of the South Coast region with a single goal – economic growth for all of Rick Kidder, our member businesses. President & CEO In April, more than 100 businesses gathered at Greater New Bedford Vocational and Technical High School for a job fair that brought out several hundred job seekers from throughout the region. The attraction of talent throughout the area is essential to economic growth, and this chamber is committed to making sure that our businesses have access to unemployed and underemployed individuals from throughout the area. The labor market has been tightening, and companies are looking for people to help them grow. There is no greater investment than the investment in a quality workforce! This spring the Cape Cod Canal Region Chamber of Commerce and the New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce embarked on a new and exciting concept for the businesses physically located in Wareham. While both chambers serve that important and growing area, neither has a strong enough foothold in Wareham so we are launching an exciting “two-for-one” limited time offer to attract businesses to join both chambers for one low price. Marie Oliva, the president of the CCCRCC and we in New Bedford believe that a rising tide lifts all boats and our goal is to make certain that the businesses of Wareham receive the services of two strong chambers to help meet their business needs. With this new relationship will come cross-marketing opportunities for both chambers and a coordination of calendars to allow for businesses to involve themselves at the highest levels they desire.

One of the hallmarks of a strong chamber is connection to and influence on our elected officials. All of our state representatives and senators care deeply about the South Coast region, but that does not mean that they don’t need to hear from the business community on an ongoing basis about the needs, challenges and opportunities afforded through good public policy. Business votes, and elected officials need to listen to the businesses that hire and pay nearly every tax payer in the region. The June 2 Legislative Luncheon will feature every elected officials representing every community we serve, and the distinguished Phil Paleologos will moderate this important discussion. The business community is affected every day by decisions made at the State House, and the Chamber is redoubling its efforts to influence policy and advocate for business-friendly legislation. The backbone of any region’s success is the quality of our schools. Our June Good Morning SouthCoast reflects the commitment of the business community to preparing our young people for the world of work. The leadership of all of our regional school systems are dedicated to continuous improvement and to make certain that our children are prepared. Nothing can replace education as the key to advancement for an individual or a family, and our leadership believes strongly in giving our children all of the tools they need to succeed. It is an investment in our region’s success that pays dividends for generations. The Chamber is involved in serious endeavors, but never forgets the value of fun and camaraderie. Being one of the oldest non-profits in Southeastern Massachusetts, Child & Family Services, Inc. opened their doors in 1843 as the New Bedford Orphans’ Home to help children left homeless or without families. Since then, the New Bedford Orphans’ Home has had many faces, changing their name alongside changing times and attitudes towards the aid of disadvantaged children. Between 1910 and 1948, New Bedford Orphans’ Home became New Bedford Children’s Aid Society. Then, once again, during 19481999, New Bedford Children’s Aid society became known as New Bedford Child & Family Services. Which leads us into present time, where the organization goes by Child & Family Services, signifying their extended footprint well beyond New Bedford. The non-profit now offers more services than ever before, such as Outreach & Counselling programs, Psychiatry, Support Groups and many more.

Seven other non-profit and educational institutions were nominated for this year’s award, including Alma del Mar Charter School, Burgo Basketball Associations Interise, Mercy Meals and More, Our Sisters’ School, Veterans Transition House, and the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center. Nominations solicited from within the community, and reviewed by a selection committee comprised of Chamber members undertook this responsibility. The selection committee looked for companies who have balanced success with a strong commitment to the community. Each nominee rated on five criteria: number of employees, staying power, growth, social responsibility and innovation. To meet just a few of these goals is a significant accomplishment. The New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce extends its appreciation to BankFive for being a partner in this important program. Every school day, 7,000 students become dropouts nationwide. That’s one every 26 seconds. The Greater New Bedford Connecting Activities Partnership needs volunteers to help address this crisis within the New Bedford area by delivering CHOICES, an interactive decision-making workshop that empowers teens to achieve academic success in pursuit of their career and life aspirations. Volunteer presenters from the local community are needed to deliver CHOICES to local 7th graders at Roosevelt Middle School in New Bedford on May 23rd, 2017, and May 24th, 2017. CHOICES is broken up into two 90-minute sessions, where presenters take students into the real world and through real life experiences. Exercises done throughout the session focus on academic self-discipline, time and money management, and goal setting. These hands-on activities allow students to recognize the fact that they have the power to make important future-impacting decisions right now. The seminar develops the ideas of time management, self-discipline and wise academic decision-making. This program exposes the students to important information about the education skills required for various occupations in today’s and tomorrow’s workplace. Presenters will stress how education achievement levels will either greatly limit or expand career choices and the ability to financially support oneself or a family. continued on page 5 3

CHOICES is a fun workshop that quickly becomes easy to present. The partnership is looking for local business and community leaders who are comfortable with public speaking, are passionate about the success of youth and are interested in education, are organized and creative, and who can donate approximately 6 hours (over the two-day session) of their time to the workshop. President/CEO Danahey reviewed the highlights of the past year – speaking about the increase in asset size to $891 million and deposits to $741 million. St. Anne’s serves over 57,000 members and remains one the largest financial institutions headquartered in Fall River. CEO Danahey stated that the Credit Union encourages all of its employees to become involved in the local community, by volunteering at events or serving as directors or advisors of community organizations. Employees volunteer hundreds of hours of their own free time and donate thousands of dollars in total to local organizations. Maestro Dinur is the Assistant Conductor of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and conducted the NBSO’s January concert, “An American in Russia.” Dinur commented, "It is a joy to be joining such a wonderful group of musicians, and a passionate and innovative staff. With his administration’s endorsement of the Middleboro route, we are encouraged that commuter rail service will come and that the service will arrive years earlier than projected by the Stoughton route.
