Lifestyle designer Joseph Abboud was drawn to the fashion business by a deep appreciation for quality and elegance. Born in Boston, he studied comparative literature at the University of Massachusetts, where he was later awarded a Doctor of Fine Arts. Shortly after, he went on to attend the Sorbonne in Paris, where he grew to love the sophisticated polish of European style. Since the debut of his first collection in 1987, Abboud has been accorded numerous honors including the distinction of being the only designer to have received the
coveted Menswear Designer of the Year two years in a row (1989 & 1990) from the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA). Abboud was honored for Excellence in American Design by the U.S. Department of Commerce. Abboud was reunited with his namesake brand in August 2013 when Men’s Wearhouse acquired JA Holding Inc., the parent company of the celebrated American clothing brand, Joseph Abboud®. Abboud re-launched his label, reestablishing the brand as a sophisticated modernAmerican lifestyle collection. Abboud is personally involved in every step of the design and manufacturing process. He is grounded, engaging, and possesses an infectious passion for his work. Chamber Update A brief report on Chamber Activities from the President/CEO Dear Members of the New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce: As the holiday season approaches, the business community is ever mindful of the joys and challenges of our community and our region. While a happy time for most of us, not all members of our communities are able to enjoy the richness of family and friends or even a home. We received a call from Peter Muise, one of our Board members, who was one of the organizers of a sleep out in support of the homeless population of New Bedford called One Homeless Night is Too Many. He was encouraging business people and politicians to spend a night sleeping outside, without the comforts of a tent or sleeping bag so that they could better relate to the plight of the homeless population. I was away that night, on my way to a wedding in Texas, but Ian Abreu of the Chamber staff joined Peter, members of the region’s business, faith and civic leadership and many others who sought to put a spotlight on the lack of shelter space in New Bedford, especially during colder months. This gesture of one night of inconvenience has produced results, including the beginnings of private efforts to raise funds to operate a shelter this winter. Through the efforts of the marketing department at First Citizens’ Federal Credit Union, a web site was created. RiseUpForHomes.com accepts donations to help raise the $100,000 needed to fund a shelter this winter. The Chamber is proud to be a part of this effort and encourages all members to help in any way they can.
On Saturday, November 28, two days after Thanksgiving, the Chamber will once again be partnering with American Express in promoting Small Business Saturday. The backbone of any economy is small business, and although many people enjoy the relative madness of shopping the national chains on Black Friday each year, the Chamber also strongly urges shoppers to embrace small businesses where local dollars support local merchants, individuals who risk it all to make their business a success. On December 1st, the Chamber staff will be working with Downtown New Bedford putting up holiday decorations in our Downtown area. While our decorating talents may not qualify us for the cover of Architectural Digest, we are excited to take part in supporting our Downtown by applying our meager talents to the task of making our beautiful city even more festive. We are moving into a busy time of year for everyone. But commerce goes on! The entire New Bedford region is gearing up for winter but also preparing for a new year of prosperity, job growth and new energy. Please know that your chamber will be working for you as we always have to promote business interests and to support the community. The New Bedford Area Chamber is looking to grow, and we know that our business, like yours, grows through referrals. So, we ask for your help to continue to enlarge our ranks of members so that we may serve you better. From the Chamber team to you and your team, we wish you a joyous, prosperous and safe holiday season and year ahead. Sincerely, Rick Kidder President & CEO

Greater New Bedford Connecting Activities Partnership “AMP it up! New Bedford” To Partner with Old Colony Regional Voc-Tech for 2015-16’ School Year
The AMP it up! New Bedford initiative, under the direction of the Greater New Bedford Connecting Activities Partnership, is pleased to announce that it has entered into a school-to-career partnership with Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School for the 2015-16 academic year. The purpose of the AMP it up! partnership is to leverage new and existing resources to continue ongoing efforts to reach career counselors, community organizations, youth-serving organizations, teachers, and most importantly, students throughout the Greater New Bedford region. The program includes outreach and awareness events such as discussions with manufacturing employees and company tours, parent engagement, as well as teacher externships and information for teachers and guidance counselors regarding educational pathways for manufacturing careers at post-secondary institutions.
“With such a wealth of opportunities in the advanced manufacturing industry here in Massachusetts and an everincreasing need for skilled workers to fill these high-paying jobs, young people need to know more about the possibilities of manufacturing careers,” said Marty Jones, President and CEO of MassDevelopment. “We’re seeing great success from the first two years of AMP it up! awards in expanding awareness of these careers and the skills needed, and these nine partnerships will build on their previous efforts to reach new groups of young people and the adults in their lives.” The AMP it up! campaign highlights the exciting, technology-driven, high-paying career options in manufacturing, dispels outdated misconceptions about the industry, and bolsters the prospective employee base for these quality jobs with Massachusetts companies. In the third consecutive year of the program, MassDevelopment will provide awards totaling $88,633 to the nine partnerships that consist of regional employment and workforce investment boards; advanced manufacturers; chambers of commerce and development councils; community
colleges; youth-serving organizations; and other organizations throughout the Commonwealth. The community-based programs receiving the awards plan to offer tours of advanced manufacturing companies, career awareness workshops, teacher and guidance counselor information sessions, and externships with manufacturers. The lead organizations on these nine partnerships are Berkshire Community College (Pittsfield), Brockton Area Workforce Investment Board, Central Massachusetts Workforce Investment Board (Worcester), Greenfield Community College, Metro North Regional Employment Board (Cambridge), New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce, North Central Massachusetts Economic Development Council (Fitchburg), North Shore Workforce Investment Board (Salem), and Regional Employment Board of Hampden County, Inc. (Springfield). The third round of grants builds on the successes of the campaign’s first and second years. Grant applications were evaluated based on the uses proposed; the collaborations/partnerships created; and scope of outreach proposed. This year, the program was able to award
funding to all applicants, all of whom are previous AMP it up! awardees that are continuing, expanding, and/or reshaping their programs for the coming year. If you are an educator and would like more information on how you or your school can participate in AMP it up!, please contact New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce Workforce & Business Development Manager Ian Abreu at (508) 999-5231, ext. 24, or, via email at iabreu@newbedfordchamber. com About the Connecting Activities Partnership The Greater New Bedford Connecting Activities Partnership, a collaboration of the City of New Bedford Office of the Mayor, the Greater New Bedford Workforce Investment Board and Youth Council, Bristol Community College and the New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce, promotes the connecting of academic and workplace learning through Connecting Activities workplace internships. Area employers assist High School seniors to make more informed decisions about their future education and career choices. Now through this legacy gift, Mrs. Arnold Stevens will continue to touch the lives of HopeHealth caregivers and their loved ones for years to come. We are immensely thankful to Mrs. Arnold Stevens for her charitable gift to help support those in our community caring for someone with dementia or a serious illness.”
The hospital has received Healthgrades’ five-star rating for treatment of patients with heart attack, heart failure and respiratory failure for the second consecutive year. A five-star rating indicates that Saint Anne’s Hospital clinical outcomes are statistically and significantly better than expected when treating each condition. Saint Anne’s cardiovascular services include 24-hour emergency care by emergency, cardiac and cardiovascular specialists, plus a wide range of diagnostic and treatment services for more than 30 cardiovascular-related conditions, such as cardiac arrest, heart failure, stroke, cardiac arrhythmia, and peripheral vascular disorders. Saint Anne’s was among the nation’s first hospitals earlier this year to earn the “Straight A’s Hospital” designation by the Leapfrog Group. This honor is awarded to hospitals that have received the top “A” grade for the Hospital Safety Score since it was launched in 2012. Hospitals are rated on 26 patient safety measures, such as preventing blood clots or falls, and preventing death from serious treatable complications, such as surgical site infections.

News from the Greater New Bedford Workforce Investment Board, Inc. (WIB) Different Approaches
By George Hempe, Executive Director / CEO, Greater New Bedford Workforce Investment Board, Inc. (WIB) I met with a young man whom I have know since he played tennis with my son in junior high. He had been attending a well known private 4 year school and then decided to change to a technical college system. He graduated after less then two years with the new school. Within one week of graduation the school had placed him in a position with Cisco. Cisco then contracted with him (with benefits) as a trouble shooting support person for Procter and Gamble. His region is the world. I asked him how he secured a position so quickly and he responded the technical college was the difference.
coordinator (ten years) for institutional assessment and effectiveness. Many people have heard about our challenge of changing the “model”. Here is just one example how all of us can do it better. This young man just turned 20 years old and is scheduled to be earning the “ big bucks” by the end of next year. The point here is this, no matter how much money you throw at a system you will only get out of it what is was designed to produce.
Taking a different approach to education and training worked for him, The instructors are paid in part when how many more people could it work their graduates actually get a job! I’m proud to say I am very familiar with this for? school because I once worked there as 14
Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA)
By George Hempe, Executive Director / CEO, Greater New Bedford Workforce Investment Board, Inc. (WIB) This is the latest federal legislation that replaces the Workforce Investment Act that has been in place since 1998. The intention of both Acts are very similar and in reality the WIOA is the Fed’s best effort to re-articulate and take lessons learned from WIA and manifest those into reality. One of the primary drivers of the new workforce legislation is that the workforce system be “demand-driven”. It also offers regions more flexibility in defining the objectives and scope of the workforce system that make sense for their area. Regional collaboration, actively engaged partnerships, alignment of planning, and data driven programs and initiatives with real outcomes in terms of credentials, advanced training, and/or jobs describes the intentions of
the Act. As a Workforce Investment Board we are committed to being a convener, facilitator, and neutral broker in helping develop the workforce system that effectively interacts with our other key system partners such as education/training and economic stakeholders. In this remaining year and in 2016 the Greater New Bedford Workforce Investment Board will be transitioning its objectives and mission so that it is aligned and supports the mandates and vision of WIOA.
