Annual SouthCoast Business Expo Celebrates the Olympics on Oct. 12th at Whites of Wesport! Reach thousands of business people through the Chamber’s largest and most promoted business event of the year! The SouthCoast Business Expo is the largest business-to-business trade show in the region with nearly a hundred exhibitors and hundreds of attendees. Chamber Update A Message from the President & CEO As the dog days of summer come to an end, our communities and your Chamber have every right to look forward with great optimism. We live an area of immense beauty and abundant assets on which we can continue to build a vibrant Rick Kidder, and prosperous economy on the President & CEO SouthCoast. Working together is the key to community and regional success. The Chamber has developed formal relationships with the Economic Development Council in New Bedford, the Greater New Bedford Workforce Investment Board, the South Coast Development Partnership, the Rail to Boston Coalition and many more entities, allowing our area to be able to address challenges and seek new opportunities in ways we have not seen in many years. We seek a stronger economy, not credit or accolades, but it is important that our members and our communities understand that many dedicated community leaders are standing together for a better, stronger SouthCoast. After years of frustration and wellearned cynicism, we may be well on our way to having commuter rail service to Boston once again – not in 20 years but within a few years. While skeptics abound, we cannot allow past false starts to dictate our future, and a more workable and affordable option may soon be at hand that will, at long last, connect our great communities to our largest city. Some people ask why it is so important we connect by rail. The answers lie in economics, workforce mobility, land values and business attraction. Connected communities prosper. Unconnected communities struggle. Anyone who has made the regular drive to Boston knows the challenges. New Bedford and our surrounding communities will see immediate impacts of this service in the

form of transit oriented development and the ease with which workforce talent may move to and from the area. Many will be able to rediscover the greatness of our area as a place to live, work, play and learn and residents may be more able to avail themselves of the cultural, sports and other opportunities of our largest city.

The recently passed alternative energy bill for the Commonwealth opens up new and exciting opportunities for the development of sustainable offshore wind with New Bedford as a hub of employment and perhaps even the home of support for the wind turbines built offshore. The working waterfront now has an exciting plan, spearheaded by the EDC and the Regeneration Committee, for evolving that area in new and exciting ways, and the mayor has worked hard to ensure that our State Pier received the funding necessary to refrigerate our cargo areas, making New Bedford an even more important port city. The Chamber has been an active partner in all of these endeavors and many more. The Board of Directors will gather for a retreat in late September to look at the future of the organization and how we can provide even greater relevance for our members and the economy of the South Coast. At that time, we will be unveiling a new logo and a new web site with capabilities far beyond what we could offer in the past. Your New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce is on the move – dedicated to making the South Coast the most attractive communities for business, tourism, and economic growth. Chamber Celebrates 130th Anniversary

This year will mark the 130th Anniversary of the Chamber’s Annual Meeting and Business Luncheon! This is one of the Chamber’s most anticipated events and draws well over 300 prominent business leaders and government officials who together are forming a better quality of life throughout the community. The program includes the election of the Chamber’s Board of Directors, recognition of outgoing board members and a presentation from a high profile key note speaker. Chamber Employees Graduate from Institute for Organization Management

Institute for Organization Management, the professional development program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, is pleased to announce that Rebecca Laliberte IOM, and Ian Abreu, IOM of the New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce have graduated from the program and have received the recognition of IOM. Awarded to all graduates of the Institute program, the IOM Graduate Recognition signifies the individual’s completion of 96 hours of course instruction in nonprofit management. In addition, participants can earn credit hours toward the Certified Chamber Executive (CCE) or Certified Association Executive (CAE) certifications. Nearly 1,000 individuals attend Institute annually. “Institute graduates are recognized across the country as leaders in their industries and organizations,” said Raymond P. Towle, IOM, CAE, the U.S. Chamber Foundation’s vice president of Institute for Organization Management. “These individuals have the knowledge, skills, and dedication necessary to achieve professional and organizational success in the dynamic association and chamber industries.”

The Rotary Club of New Bedford recently donated new computers set up with the ability to skype to 4 local Nursing/ Rehabilitation Homes in New Bedford. This program spearheaded by President Linda Silveira offers residents a way of contacting relatives and friends to have live chats right from their rooms. Computers were purchased with money raised locally and allocated to a segment of the community that we at Rotary feel could benefit greatly. Many elderly patients are often left with no way to reach out to friends and relatives that live out of the area. They made the computers mobile by setting up with carts for moving from one room to another without a problem, they also set up another version that is also mobile and offers touchscreen technology. Dr. Gleeson received her Doctor of Osteopathic medicine degree from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Mo. She completed a general surgery residency at St. John Detroit Riverview Hospital in Warren, Mich., and a thoracic cardiovascular surgery fellowship at the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit. She is board certified in cardiovascular thoracic surgery and general surgery. She is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Minimally Invasive Robotic Association, and the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons. Previously, Dr. Gleeson was the Owner/ Operator of the Thoracic Surgery Institute Southwest Michigan and prior to that she was Chairman of the Department of Surgery, Battle Creek Health System in Battle Creek, Mich. New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce Continues its Fight for SouthCoast Rail By: Ian Abreu

While the board weighed which alternatives it may or may not pursue regarding this project, plans are already in progress to institute interim service from the South Coast to existing rail lines as a temporary fix.
