Horizons Annual Report 2018
Dear Horizons Family: I have just celebrated my first year with Horizons, and what a great year it has been! In just one year, I have already accumulated a treasure trove of moments and memories that I know I will always carry with me: hugs as kids barreled off the bus in the morning; reunions of summer friends at Winter Program; the pridefilled auditorium at graduation; the vivid memories shared by our returning alumni; and the bittersweet tears as the buses pulled away on the last day of summer.
“The Horizons family is a constant source of inspiration, joy and pride.”
The Horizons family is a constant source of inspiration, joy and pride. Each year we choose a theme for our Summer Program as a way of unifying learning across the community. This year’s theme was “Only One You,” inspired by Linda Kranz’s book by that name. The book encourages children to recognize and celebrate the things that make them unique and to appreciate differences in others, as well. We carried that theme into classroom units, art projects, field trips and the musical revue, where our students performed the song “This is Me” from the movie, The Greatest Showman. We played that song in the Junior Program end of summer slideshow, and I will never forget how it felt to hear the entire student body enthusiastically singing along and shouting the phrase, “This is me!” with a level of conviction and determination that gave me chills. That moment has made me reflect on the many unique individuals and contributions that make up the tapestry of the Horizons family. As parents, donors, faculty, staff, board and volunteers, each of you contributes to the vibrancy and strength of our family in important and unique ways. The alumni we interviewed for this report spoke passionately about the power the Horizons family has had in their lives. You are that family, and your impact is profound and lasting. Thank you! Sincerely,
Nancy von Euler Executive Director

Mission Horizons builds brighter futures for K-12 students from low-income families by creating year-round academic, artistic, and athletic opportunities, nurturing potential, cultivating a safe and supportive community, and inspiring individual dreams.
The Challenge Fairfield County has one of the largest opportunity gaps in the nation. • L ow-income students are six times more likely to drop out of high school and fewer than one third of them will enroll in college. • U nder-resourced students who do not have access to summer educational opportunities lose 2-3 months of academic ground during the summer months. • Many low-income students are three grades behind by fifth grade. • O nly 76% of low-income Connecticut high school seniors graduate from high school. • O nly 56% of economically disadvantaged Connecticut high school graduates enroll in college. • I n predominantly minority communities, the youth drowning rate is 2-3 times higher than the national average. This lack of educational attainment has a profound impact on these students’ career trajectories and lifetime earnings. Horizons at New Canaan Country School is changing the odds for Norwalk and Stamford students by providing them with the resources and opportunities they need to succeed in school, college, career and life.

We are dedicated to the children who need us most
• Intentionally targeting under-resourced students Drawing primarily from Norwalk and Stamford, virtually all of our children qualify for free or reduced-priced school meals. The majority of admitted students are performing below grade level when they join the program. • Long-term commitment - Once enrolled in Horizons, students are encouraged to stay with the program through high school graduation and stay in touch with us as alumni. Horizons builds long-lasting relationships with all of our students that provide them with the support, skills, and confidence to realize their full potential, despite the significant obstacles they face. • Developing the whole child – Our programs are designed to enhance academic achievement, provide cultural enrichment, build confidence and resilience, and expose students to the wider world around them. • Parent partnership – We partner with parents to help children build a brighter future. Our parent partnership fosters strong attendance, participation, and retention.

You can help us create stories like Adiah’s
Proud mom, Alisha and Adiah in 2018.
Adiah Price-Tucker started in the Horizons Summer Program as a Kindergartener and has been a constant in the Horizons community for the last 13 years. She received the George E. Stevens Scholarship to attend St. Luke’s School in New Canaan and enrolled as a freshman at Harvard University in September 2018. Adiah told us “From my immediate family to Horizons, I largely attribute my success to those who have supported me. My connection with Horizons goes beyond that, from my very first day of the Summer Program as a Kindergartener through my senior year in high school, Horizons has nurtured me, encouraged me and provided me with a safe space to take risks and explore my interests. The program has provided me with a community that I don’t hesitate to call a second family…that I don’t Adiah in 2005, her first year in the Horizons program.
know where or who I would be without.”

Annie Cohen Annie Cohen has been woven into the fabric of Horizons since she joined the Board over 39 years ago. During her time as the Horizons Board Chair, Annie dedicated her energy to establishing the Outreach Committee (currently known as Academic Coaching) to help Horizons ninth through twelfth graders navigate the many challenges of high school and made the idea of college a reality for our students. Annie has always given her whole heart to Horizons, whether she was driving the children to local pools, laughing with them in the cafeteria, cheering them on at graduation, or most recently, sponsoring an author visit. In her own words, “It doesn’t get any better than being surrounded by happy children that are loved and fulfilled every minute of their Horizons day.” We are so grateful for Annie and the unique contributions she has made during her almost 40-year relationship with Horizons.
The McGregor Family Brian McGregor remembers like it was yesterday the day his mother put him (crying) on the bus to Horizons as a Kindergartener. Brian says he arrived at this magical place, New Canaan Country School, in June 1996 and soon began to realize this may not be half bad. Parents, Sonia and Franklin, were raising 11 children in Stamford, Connecticut. Five of their children: Michelle, Brian, Avion, Shannon and Kerri-Anne attended the Horizons program and all feel nothing but overwhelming gratitude for the many ways the program contributed and shaped their lives. Brian’s favorite moments at Horizons were learning to swim, field trips to Broadway, camping, and a coding class where he became infatuated with technology. Brian said “Horizons exposed me to a place (New Canaan) I never knew existed, opening my mind to the possibilities of another life and keeping me busy (and out of trouble, according to his mom).” He went on to study computer science at Eastern Connecticut State University, leading him to a career in technology. Brian is currently working in System Support at Bankwell of New Canaan. The rest of the McGregor crew lives in Connecticut, New York, Florida and Maryland, pursuing careers ranging from human resources to mechanical engineering. The McGregor family is an example of how Horizons is shaping the future of entire families.

Brian Villalta Brian joined the Horizons program in 2009 as a Kindergartener eager for a summer of fun, with no idea of the academic journey Horizons would lead him on. As a young student, Brian was inquisitive and had a love of learning. Horizons and New Canaan Country School teacher, John Hastings, saw a spark in Brian and suggested he apply to Country School. John helped the Villalta family navigate the process and in 5th grade Brian enrolled at the school. Brian feels strongly that Horizons and John opened the door to a world of opportunities that otherwise would not have been available to him. Brian has always made an effort to give back to Horizons and this summer he provided close to 200 hours of volunteer service in the Horizons office. Brian willingly took on any task, whether it was organizing student forms, following up on absences, or providing translation for families. Brian expressed that: “There is no way I can give back all that Horizons has done for me, but I do what I can and I hope to continue to do so in the future as well.” He is currently a flourishing sophomore at Rye Country Day School in New York where he is taking advantage of all the many academic and enrichment opportunities available to him. We know Brian will continue to make us proud!
Lavone Roberson It is hard to define Lavone Roberson’s relationship with Horizons in one word. Lavone, who joined the program when she was 5, can’t remember her life without Horizons. Lavone and her two siblings (who also went through the Horizons program) grew up in the south end of Stamford, Connecticut, where violence and crime presented extra challenges for her single mother, Jackie Roberson, Horizons Dean of Students. During her time at Horizons, Lavone expressed: “I was exposed to things I never could have dreamed of at Horizons and this instilled my life’s passions: from my desire to travel, to my love of the ocean and my drive to be an educator. The program makes you look beyond your horizons.” Lavone gave back to Horizons working as a Teaching Assistant for two years and then as a Lead Teacher for seven years during her summers, while working as a 3rd grade teacher in Norwalk during the school year. Recently, a battle with ovarian cancer and a leave of absence from school has forced Lavone to think more broadly about what it means to be an educator. She has been sharing her story as a way to inspire and educate others. Horizons made a difference for her and nothing will keep Lavone from making a difference for others!
