With the state passing its 70% double-dose vaccination target, Hunter Valley gyms, cafes, restaurants, pubs, beauticians, hairdressers and shopping centres re-opened their doors on 11 October.

Well, as promised by the NSW Government, “Freedom Day” finally arrived.
And, from all reports, complexes such as Charlestown Square, Westfield Kotara and Stockland Green Hills made the most of the occasion, with hundreds of people flocking to those respective venues. While it’s a godsend for all those businesses who have struggled over the past few months, is it the right move? Even though locally-acquired COVID-19 cases have dropped throughout NSW recently, the Hunter Valley’s figures remain quite high, especially throughout the Lake Macquarie, Cessnock, Maitland and Newcastle LGAs. Now, the Delta variant is reaching the smaller towns further west like Muswellbrook and Scone, with more exposure sites listed by NSW Health in recent days. With the state relaxing a lot of the previous restrictions, is this region in danger of a massive surge in infections? In his haste to stamp his authority on his new role and “free” Greater Sydney from lockdown, NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet might have just made his first major error. Only time will tell.

A quick response is vital, says Hunter Heart Safe “People need to learn how to recognise a cardiac arrest, how to call for help on Triple Zero and they need to understand how to do compression only CPR and how to

use an AED (automated external defibrillator).” That’s the message from Dr Mark Miller, the man behind Hunter Heart Safe and its vital training program. For three years now, the organisation has been educating people across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the Hunter about the importance of the bystander response in cardiac arrest. Dr Miller says the team of volunteers, which includes 250 doctors, nurses, paramedics and other trained first aid providers, started the organisation to help make a difference. “We’re all frontline healthcare workers and we all see on a fairly regular basis people who come in after a cardiac arrest who don’t do well because they haven’t had
basic first aid in the field,” he said. “By the time they get to us in the emergency department there is nothing much further we can do to help. “If they haven’t had good quality chest compressions and early defibrillation in the field by bystanders they generally do pretty badly. “We came to recognise it is outside our control and the only thing we can do to influence outcomes in cardiac arrest is to train the general public, the bystanders who are going to be first on the scene, how to perform these basic lifesaving skills. “I think it is a skill everyone should learn from childhood.” While COVID-19 has made their work difficult, Dr Miller said they are looking forward to
resuming classes later in the year. “When people finish the course they often feel empowered to take it on,” he said. “Previously they were a little bit unsure, they didn’t realise how simple it was or that hands only CPR is a thing. “Particularly in this age of COVID-19 you don’t need to do mouth to mouth, so compression only CPR is critical. “We get the message across that it’s really only bystanders who can change these outcomes. “If a bystander takes it on, they can quadruple the chance of survival rather than just waiting for paramedics to arrive.” For more information, or to get in contact with the team, go to hunterheartsafe.com - Elizabeth Symington

Region urged to remain vigilant during snake season Clean your yard, cut long grass and stack any loose materials upright – that’s the advice from
Lake Macquarie Snake Catcher owner Colin Shoemark says the arrival of spring means many snakes are on the move across the Hunter. Photo: Peter Stoop.
Lake Macquarie Snake Catcher owner Colin Shoemark, who is currently dealing with a number of reptiles on the move in the Hunter. Colin warns spring means the slithering creatures are getting more active. “In winter I might get one or two calls a week to come and remove a snake,” he says. “At the moment my phone runs hot all day, I could be answering at least 10 calls a day. I’ve caught snakes in nearly every suburb of Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, even on Steel Street in Newcastle, near Marketown. “I caught five Diamond Pythons at a Charlestown factory bay recently,” he said. “The first day I caught the female, had a look around and
couldn’t find anything else. “The next day I got a call and found a procession of males over the next few days. They were coming for the female, her scent was still there.” Pythons, Marsh Snakes, a rare Death Adder, green snakes and even a Blue-bellied Snake have been spotted in the Hunter. However, the most common are Red-bellied Black Snakes and Eastern Browns. Colin, who has owned a reptile catch and release licence since 2016, says his love of the creatures began in his youth. “My earliest memory of reptiles was when I was six and our Dalmatian [dog] got bitten by an Eastern Brown next door and passed away,” he said. “I was forever looking over the
fence at this thing that took such a big part of my life away and thinking ‘I don’t understand’. “Then I saw a blue tongue and kept it for a bit. We’d do that over the years, keep it for a little bit then let it go, and when I got a bit older I got a reptile licence and started collecting animals.” Colin is permitted to catch snakes from backyards only. He then relocates them within a 20 kilometre radius. “There’s no magic potion that gets rid of them,” he said. “Be an expert at painting your house, doing your own electrical, and mowing your lawn, but leave the snakes to someone who knows how to handle them.” Go to newcastleweekly.com.au for an extended version of this story. - Rebecca Riddle

Dixon Park Beach kiosk a step closer to opening Coffee lovers in Newcastle will soon be flocking to Dixon Park Beach, with the arrival of a long-awaited kiosk in time for the busy Summer period. Sunnyboy Kiosk Pty Ltd looks set to run the site after City of Newcastle sought tenders to lease, fit-out and operate the kiosk in August.
Councillor Carol Duncan said recent works have brought the space to life and believes it is likely to become a regular stop for locals. “The recent refurbishment of the Dixon Park Beach kiosk has transformed the building into a space which will become a vibrant hive of

activity once it becomes operational later this year,” she said. “Following a tender process, Sunnyboy Kiosk Pty Ltd was assessed as the proposed lessee and with such a stunning backdrop, I have no doubt that the kiosk will become a regular haunt for coffee lovers and a place for people to stop and enjoy our magnificent coastline.” Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes believes the project demonstrates the council’s commitment to upgrading coastal assets. “Newcastle’s beaches are worldrenowned, and City of Newcastle is committed to ensuring these incredible natural assets remain accessible to our community and have the amenities required for a positive visitor experience,” she said. Public notice of the proposed five-year lease, with a further five-
year option, to Sunnyboy Kiosk Pty Ltd commenced earlier this month for a period of 28 days. Consideration will be given to submissions, before a lease agreement is enacted. It is expected that the kiosk will be operational by mid-December. Work to prepare the site for use commenced this year and included the connection to power, water and sewerage infrastructure. More recently the site welcomed the construction of a shade shelter and seating, and the renewal of the iconic Mark Richards mural. Another coastal building which will also soon be enjoyed by the community is Shepherds Hill Cottage, with the final stages of renewal works underway. An expression of interest for the lease of the cottage concluded in August and is under evaluation.

The hardest part’s the unknown: frontline worker “This is what we have been trained to do, we know exactly how to care for these people.” Those words come from Alexandra Mexon, one of the vital healthcare workers helping COVID-19 patients in the Hunter. As Nurse Unit Manager of the
F2 Ward at John Hunter Hospital, Ms Mexon has seen the impact of the virus first-hand – something most of us could not even fathom. Even though the pandemic, particularly this second wave in the region, has presented many challenges, Ms Mexon says she

feels a great sense of pride in herself and her staff for the role they are playing on the frontline. “I can’t even describe it, it’s a crisis but everyone has come together,” she said. “The doctors, nurses, the admin staff members, the physios, the blood collectors, we’re all here and we all realise that we are in the same boat and just need to help each other. “It’s hard but it does give you a little bit of a purpose. “I mean what other reason did we become healthcare workers other than to help people? “It’s never nice to be in hospital; if you are, it means that you are quite unwell and are needing extra care. “So [knowing] we are making a difference [for the patients] in
probably one of the worst times of their life is pretty nice.” Ms Mexon, who’s been working on the infectious diseases ward for eight years, says the hardest part is the unknown. “We’re looking at the case numbers every day and we know this is going to affect us,” she said. “We’re very prepared, we have the capacity and are ready for it, but it is just a bit challenging to not know what it’s going to be like.” When it comes to receiving messages of support, Ms Mexon is humbled by it. “There are so many beautiful things that people have done, we see it and think ‘isn’t that just amazing and beautiful that people are thinking of us during this time’,” she said. - Elizabeth Symington

An artist’s impression of the viewing platform.
A wetland boardwalk and landmark viewing platform are set to create a spectacular centrepiece to the northern section of the Fernleigh Awabakal Shared Track (FAST). The exciting plans will see the construction of a striking new bridge over Cold Tea Creek, along with footpath loops branching off from the main shared pathway. FAST Project Manager Tess Dziwulski believes it will showcase the region’s natural and cultural significance and rich flora and fauna. “The structures, public art installations and interpretive signage that form part of the project will deliver that in spades, creating an iconic piece of infrastructure much more than just a shared pathway,” she said. An elevated boardwalk and viewing platform along the first section beside Belmont Lagoon will provide unique views towards the wetland. It will also give an opportunity to explain the Aboriginal cultural story known as ‘When the Moon Cried’, detailing how the lagoon was formed. Tear-shaped ironwork on the bridge over Cold Tea Creek will also speak to the story, and to the important role of water and wetlands in the area. Ms Dziwulski added interpretive signage developed in conjunction with Bahtabah Local Aboriginal Land Council, and public art installations by Aboriginal artists,
would strengthen those links. After crossing Cold Tea Creek, the track will continue along the eastern side of Beach Street oval, then onto Ocean Park Road and Green Street, past Belmont Cemetery. It will skirt the northern edge of Belmont Golf & Bowls, continue along the southern side of Hilda Street and then link with the project’s southern section on the Pacific Highway. Lake Macquarie City Council’s Deputy CEO Tony Farrell said construction of the southern section was continuing as planned. “The track will fill in a missing link of shared pathway between the end of the Fernleigh Track at Belmont and Blacksmiths, adding to our city’s growing active transport network,” Mr Farrell said. “We’re excited to see it moving ahead, and look forward to delivering this important link to the community.” Work began in April on the project’s 1.6 kilometre southern section and construction of the 2.1 kilometre northern section will begin next year. The entire project is expected to be complete by October 2023. The NSW Government awarded the works $7.4 million in funding and the council will contribute the remaining funds to ensure the track’s completion. Go to lakemac.com.au for more information about the FAST project.

Newcastle cricketers padding up for big season The Newcastle District Cricket Association (NDCA) is padding up for its biggest season in recent memory, according to secretary Aaron Gray. Belmont, Cardiff-Boolaroo, Charlestown, Hamilton-Wickham, Merewether, Newcastle City, Stockton, University of Newcastle, Toronto Workers, Wallsend, Waratah-Mayfield and Western Suburbs will vie for the top honours again, with a further 10 teams expected to take the field in the Suburban Districts competition. Women’s fixtures are also likely to give the men a run for their money, with numbers soaring in that division, too. All up, 188 sides will take guard at the crease in 2021/22. And, that’s music to the ears of Gray.
“Things are shaping up really well,” he said. “It’s a fantastic response from all the clubs at the moment, especially in these times with so much uncertainty. “Registrations and team entries being up is a phenomenal outcome for NDCA. “In particular, the women’s format – which will now be included in the club championships – has risen by 100%, along with a couple of T20 tournaments. “Meanwhile, the Denis Broad Cup and other comps have grown by nearly 50%. “So, it’s really good to see. “Only the traditional grade cricket – four sides from each of the 12 clubs – remains the same because we don’t have any avenues for growth there.”
Gray admitted it had been a tough couple of seasons for the NDCA. “It is unusual – we were impacted by floods, heat and smoke, even before COVID-19 reared its head,” he said. “We’ve had all these funny things that have crept into the sport – and it’s very disruptive – but it also shows the resilience of the game. “It’s played in the harshest of conditions during the Australian summer. “However, I think the volunteers and clubs have built off the back of that resilience.” With the competition slated to start soon, Gray feels everyone is “really excited” about 2021/22. “It’s the second consecutive season we’ve enjoyed exponential growth,” he said.
“While COVID-19 and vaccination expectations have created uncertainty, particularly with participation in sport, all of our clubs have rolled their collective sleeves up and produced 188 sides. “I honestly think their efforts should be applauded.” - Rod Thompson

Port of Newcastle deal on the ball for Jets’ women Hot on the heels of a groundbreaking partnership with Port of Newcastle (PoN), the Newcastle Jets’ women’s team will benefit from a similar windfall. PoN’s sponsorship commitment now sees the company backing both the men’s and women’s squads for the first time.
CEO Craig Carmody said the Port was delighted to be bonded by gold with not just the men’s but also the women’s A-League side for the next three seasons. “We are passionate about our community and football and could think of no better time for Port of Newcastle to lend its support

to another Newcastle icon – the Newcastle Jets A-League Women’s team,” he explained. “We see this partnership for the three years ahead as an opportunity for PoN to give a really great gift to local residents of something positive and enjoyable for families and football fans alike. “And, to bolster women’s sport in the Newcastle and Hunter region as well.” He added they want to inspire future generations of young female footballers. “As a traditionally maledominated industry, PoN is keenly focused on supporting diversity and inclusion, gender balance and opportunities for women within our workforce,” he stated. “So, the opportunity to support other women to pursue their goals
presented the perfect partnership for us. “By supporting the Jets’ A-League Women’s team, the Port hopes to inspire another generation of women and young footballers to follow their dreams and pursue any career they want to within the community.” Among them are daughters of Port staff, such as nine-year-old Thommy Byrnes, who had the pleasure of meeting players Cassidy Davis, Gema Simon and Lauren Allan. “I was like ‘oh my gosh, I get to go and meet my idols the Jets players’,” Thommy said. “It was such an amazing experience for me because when I grow up, it is my aim to play for the Newcastle Jets and then after that play for the Matildas and represent Australia.” - Rod Thompson

Novocastrian lends talent to Australian drama If you’re looking for something new to watch, actor and Novocastrian Zac Garred’s latest show could be perfect for you. Inspired by real life, Australian Gangster is set within Sydney’s underworld where gangsters and the Instagram generation collide with the social elite. “It is about Pasquale Barbaro and his flashy rise and immense fall in the Sydney organised crime scene,” Garred said. “It’s about nefarious people; ruthless, shadowy and how Pasquale tries to conquer but only ends up torching himself. “What I really like about it is that it touches on corruption issues that have since been the subject of Royal Commissions, like The Star Casino and its popularity with organised
crime figures like these people.” Garred plays Adam Freeman, the son of “infamous colourful racing identity”, George Freeman. “Adam has an interesting story around Sydney and has found himself in trouble, he was involved in some serious drug trafficking charges,” Garred told the Newcastle Weekly. “I really loved playing Adam and exploring the darker side of Sydney.” For Garred, working on the show was a “really interesting experience”. “We filmed three years ago now and could not even talk about it because of legal proceedings,” he explained. “The whole shoot was top secret, there were fake character names, fake titles, everything was deliberately vague because of the
legalities around the real characters we were playing – some of whom had killed others. “I have to say, it added a thrill.” Garred said the “cast [and crew] were extraordinary”. “Alex Bertrand who plays Pasquale is an incredible actor, and working with two directors like Gregor Jordan and Fadia Abboud, both from very different backgrounds, was a wonderful creative experience,” he said. Garred encourages people to check it out. “The series shows a side of the contemporary Sydney underworld that is still being played out today,” he said. The limited series is available to watch on 7Plus. - Elizabeth Symington

Muso hopes for a hit with new track Following the recent success of It Feels Right, Newcastle singersongwriter Brendan Hamilton is back with his latest offering Little Things. And, it’s a departure from his established 90’s alternative-rock sound. In fact, he wasn’t even going to release it as a single. But, his friends and family were vibe-ing its lyrical content, especially during the lockdown. So, now, Little Things is available for listeners worldwide. “I wrote this song after a really stressful experience,” Hamilton said. “It’s about ‘perspective’. “Life can be tough… I’ve gone through a lot… however, it’s taught me to appreciate the little things in life. “The things that really matter.”

newcastleweekly.com.au
Little Things was recorded at Spinlight Studio in Newcastle, weeks before the Hunter was thrown into lockdown. Finger-picked acoustic guitar, light piano, stomps, slide guitar and soft vocals – it definitely shows a different side to Hamilton’s sound. Before going solo, he was the drummer for popular outfit Broadway Mile. In 2021, Hamilton took the plunge and performed at an open mic in Newcastle. Since then, he’s been releasing music and defining his sound. “Since I wrote the song, I’ve heard so much positive feedback,” he told the Newcastle Weekly. “People usually say it’s one of their favourites. “But, they also say it’s probably not a single.
“I feel like commercial music has become so predictable. “If people like the song, surely that’s what really matters? “So, I decided to take a risk and release it as a single.” As opposed to It Feels Right, which was personal for Hamilton. “It was about a long-distance relationship I had a few years ago,” he said. - Rod Thompson

There’s light at end of dark tunnel, says Robyn There were many Hunter businesses thrilled to re-open on Monday, following strict stay-athome orders, but none more so than Easy Living Footwear. renovations within the Junction Fair store. However, due to uncertainty surrounding the availability of tradesmen and materials, all their plans fell into a holding pattern until early September. Now, it appears that wait has paid big dividends for the owners and shoppers alike. “Our tradesmen have worked tirelessly over the past month to produce a wonderful new store, which is double the size,” Robyn said. “That will allow customers to enjoy the luxury of a spacious premises but also an expanded style collection. “The larger store enables extra space for social distancing, too, which is now more important than ever.” Robyn admitted it had been
difficult during the lockdown. “Very tough and uncertain is how I’d describe it,” she said. “Who’d have ever thought that we would not be able to open the stores for such a long time? “Over the past year, we have spent a lot of time and money developing our online presence. “And, even though it’s not the same as having our wonderful customers instore, they could at least receive their shoes directly to their front door.” Robyn was quick to praise both levels of government for their respective efforts during the pandemic. “I believe the NSW and Australian governments have done a great job supporting business throughout this really tough time,” she said.
“Last year we had JobKeeper and, this time, JobSaver and the Disaster Payment schedule. “This enabled some form of income for both employers and employees. “These are unprecedented times; everyone was developing and learning on the run. “But, now, with the Roadmap to Recovery, we can see a light at the end of what sometimes was a really dark tunnel. “It’s still a learning curve for both the government and the community. “So, let’s take each day as it comes and hope the COVID-19 cases remain stable. “I think we all need to accept that the virus is here to stay and we need to learn to live with it.” - Rod Thompson
Groundwork Fitness advertising moment
Groundwork Fitness encourages community to get active A gym in the heart of Newcastle is helping people discover the importance of staying healthy and exercising. Karl Versteeg established Groundwork Fitness in 2020 to encourage the region to undertake strength training. Located in Carrington, the site offers weight training and conditioning with specially made equipment. Living with Cerebral Palsy, Karl knows all too all too well how beneficial it can be. Ever since he was 14, he has participated in this type of exercise to improve his movement. “Strength training has basically
kept me upright – if I didn’t squat and deadlift, I’d be either in a wheelchair or finding it very difficult to walk,” he said. He opened the gym to create space for older people to train. “We don’t have mirrors or loud music and we have a smaller membership so we can really concentrate and look after our members,” he explained. “Osteoporosis Australia says that the more we age the more important it is to train with weights, but there isn’t really anywhere in Newcastle where you can do this. “There are plenty of gyms with machines, but they only train a body part, where we are training

a movement by using squats and deadlifts. “In short, I wanted a gym where I’d want to train at – not a big box gym where it’s this churn and burn mentality.” Since opening in December, the team has received incredible feedback. “Every member is seeing the results that weight training can achieve in such a short time,” he said. Karl is not the only person who believes this type of training can
be beneficial, he has the support of Geriatrician Dr John Ward. “I was very dubious about this sort of training for someone like me at 77 but it has been very beneficial,” he said. “I have more energy and walk differently – not like an old man any longer. “I can get off the floor easier and it has also taught me how to use my home equipment properly.” Go to groundworkfitness.com.au for more.

Keep watch for signs of home subsidence As the weather continues to heat up in the Hunter, residents have been urged to remember the drier conditions can affect our homes. Civil engineer at ground engineering specialists Mainmark James O’Grady says extended dry weather can impact the soils surrounding your home, which may impact the ground supporting the foundations. Many suburban areas in Australia contain reactive clay soils, which are prone to shrinking and swelling due to changes in moisture levels. When this happens ,the soil movement can cause the foundation ground under homes to contract, which is known as subsidence. It can result in substantial and expensive structural damage if left untreated, so it is important to recognise the more serious signs of subsidence and act without delay. 20
newcastleweekly.com.au
While minor hairline cracks along walls are common with normal seasonal house movement, wider and deeper cracks can be a clear sign of foundation issues. James says the the signs may not be immediately obvious or just limited to wall cracks. Sinking or sloping floors can be a sign of structural settlement and windows and doors becoming jammed or misaligned, skirting boards separating from the wall or puddles forming around the exterior paths or driveways of the home may all indicate foundation ground issues. If the signs of subsidence appear, it’s important to consult structural and geotechnical engineers, and ground engineering experts. For more information about the signs of subsidence, and what can be done, go to mainmark.com/subsidenceproblems-around-homes.
in the garden
Vegetable, herb growers turn to organic gardening I’ve noticed since the beginning of spring this year many gardeners have turned to turning the soil. Perhaps partly because of COVID they are feeling the need to grow their own produce. But, I’m surprised at the number of vegetable and herb growers who are turning to organic gardening. Organic gardening is a much-feted concept, but how many really understand the implications in this method of cultivation? One of the common questions asked is which plant to grow to keep away whatever pest? This goes hand-in-hand with organic concepts. Organic gardening means not using chemicals or man-made products, which includes potting mixes, fertilisers and non-guaranteed organic manures. Today, many chemicals are eco-friendly and labels on fertilisers should clearly display the government certification. Trust me, deterring pests won’t be achieved by planting one specimen. For example, one chive plant near roses won’t deter aphids – they will need to be mass-planted to
see any positive results. I did experience a visit to a Newcastle council garden, which allowed an enthusiastic couple to garden organically. They had mass-planted basil around and everything, including the basil, had holes in the leaves enjoyed by whatever insects. But, don’t let this be a deterrent if you wish to garden organically. However, keep in mind, it can be a continual effort. My first consideration is what I spray. I no longer grow produce, but maintain an awareness of the importance of caring, particularly about bees which can be all-important in an organic garden. Check the can or bottle on what the base spray is formulated with. Always spray late in the afternoon when bees have gone to bed. Grow mass of lavender under fruit trees – this will not only repel insects but will attract bees to pollinate the fruit blossom.
IN THE GARDEN JUDY SHARPE
Although quantity is needed, a large pot of healthy sweet basil near a doorway could deter pesky summer flies. One of the most overlooked herbs is the Perennial Basil, which bears long stems of blue flowers – the bees adore them. I recently read an article in a horticultural magazine regarding grubs laid by Christmas beetles and why we aren’t seeing the usual proliferation of the beetles at Christmas. The problem is they lay eggs for the cockchafer grub or witchety grub, curled white with a dark head. The writer suggested we dig them up and relocate them to another part of the garden. That’s all well and good, but many today grow in pots on balconies and they do eat the roots of plants. So, I rest my case, so much for organic gardening.

More bang-for-your-buck in Medowie, says agent Its high population turnover might be because of its proximity to the RAAF base, but Medowie is fast becoming a real estate magnet in its own right. Home to large blocks, two fresh housing developments, and three newly built retirement villages, the Port Stephens suburb is undergoing

an economic boom. After welcoming its first 24-hour gym, McDonald’s Restaurant and Chemist Warehouse this quarter, the township with a population of 9,500 will soon boast its own six-bay ambulance station, 7-Eleven service station, tavern and commercial precinct comprising a retail, medical and childcare centre. Curtis and Blair Real Estate managing director Jane Blair, who has lived in the area for more than 25 years, says Medowie is slowly coming into its own. “It’s unrivalled in what it has to offer,” she says. “We like to think of Medowie as the epicentre of the region. “We’re 30 minutes from Nelson Bay, 30 minutes from Newcastle, and

30 minutes from Maitland. “This is God’s country.” Having raised her own six children in the area, Ms Blair knows first-hand Medowie’s rural appeal. “It’s such an in-demand area at the moment,” she says. “Everyone is craving more open space and we have that here. “And with Sydney experiencing a mass exodus, I spend all day on the phone with potential buyers looking to capture that ‘rural feel’. “It’s also about getting more ‘bang for your buck’ and you can do that in Medowie.” Recent sales figures support her theory. In September, property data and analytics provider CoreLogic
reported Medowie’s total number of sales at 261, taking its annual median house price up 17.31% to $610,000. “It’s hard to keep up at the moment,” Ms Blair says. “Sales [figures] are rising on a week-to-week basis. “A property on the market is selling within seven days at the moment.” Ms Blair says her agency’s recent property buyers have included up-sizers, down-sizers, returning locals and interstate couples wanting a tree change. “There’s no real type, Medowie is honestly attracting a whole range of people at the moment, and I can see why, I love it here,” she explains. - Rebecca Riddle

Key work or health news will spotlight the best way to move forward. It’s a good time to consider how you’d like your domestic life, family circumstances and creative projects to develop. The key to success lies in not allowing tension at home to get out of hand. Far better to find peace.
a domestic matter will come full circle. It’s in your interest to avoid arguments as a power struggle will be counter-productive. You’ll enjoy a reunion, planning a trip and the chance to progress with paperwork and finances. If you’re looking for a job or a promotion, you may receive good news, so be optimistic.
This is a proactive week to make progress in areas that are important to you, especially financially and at work. changes in your usual routine and health schedule mean it’s a good time to analyse your priorities. However, if you have been at loggerheads with someone, tread carefully to avoid arguments.
a development at work or regarding a collaboration will mean you must make a new agreement. Travel, your long-term projects and, for some, legal matters will deserve attention. You may be inclined to be impulsive, so the better organised you are, the less likely you’ll feel frustrated and be impatient.

You’ll enjoy socialising.
Key news from your past, to do with work or health will have a strong bearing on your circumstances now. news on sunday or monday will determine how you are best to proceed moving forward. be careful to avoid a conflict especially on these same days, when tempers may be frayed.
You could turn a corner with a group or a friend. Key news on monday will open doors, but if it does the opposite, find the time to discuss options. You’ll need to negotiate and luckily your communication skills are peaking, so you should make progress but must avoid arguments, especially on sunday and monday.
This is a good week to carefully research a fresh financial or personal arrangement. In the process you may also resolve a difference of opinions but must avoid making mistakes. Your vulnerabilities or those of someone close may come out and luckily, support will be available. You may be asked for help yourself.

RUBBISH REMOVALS
Count to the beat of your own drum with the Learn & Groove Thumpin’ Numbers Drum. Tap the top of the drum and it will light-up to match the numbered tags’ colours while teaching colour names. Choose English or Spanish modes to learn about colours and numbers in either language.
RUBBISH REMOVAL
Drum up your own beat in Drum Solo mode to add to reggae, pop and Latin music styles. In Music mode, jam along to 12 children’s melodies. This plush drum is designed with textured fabric, colourful, numbered tags that add to sensory development and encourage touch. Take the show on the road using the easy-grab fabric handle for on-the-go play.

FAMILY
This is the best part of my life. Lara, my wife, and the kids teach me new things every day and keep me grounded, and there’s no way I could do the work I do without all of their support.
SURFING
Surfing is a go-to when I need to clear my head. It really helps you channel your focus and forget about everything else. I often check out the swell at Dixon Park before heading into work, and my sons are pretty handy on a board too so it’s nice to head out together.
CAMPING
My favourite things
Tim Crakanthorp State Member for Newcastle
Tim grew up in Moruya with two brothers and his parents, who were both teachers. They fostered in him a love for education and exploration which saw him live in South Africa for a year on student exchange and work for an environmental education centre in Indonesia. He first came to Newcastle for university and fell in love with the city, and later, a woman who lived there. Before being elected to represent Newcastle in the NSW Parliament in 2014 he worked in disability care, community education and mine safety, and was also a Newcastle councilor for eight years. A few elections, four kids and a cat named Charlie later, there’s never a dull moment but he wouldn’t have it any other way.
Growing up in a small town I was always outdoors running amuck. I loved camping when I was young and not much has changed; I’ve even thrown the tent up in the backyard during lockdown and jumped in with the kids!
LIVE MUSIC In the lead-up to going to a gig I’m like a kid on Christmas Eve. Local band at the bowlo, Midnight Oil on a tour; I love it all. My daughters are showing an interest too, which I’m stoked about, and we’ve recently hit up Amy Shark and Tones and I together.
NEWCASTLE It’s cliché, I know, but there’s a reason I wanted to stay after I first came here some 33 years ago! The people, the lifestyle, the beaches, and the fact that it’s not Sydney - what’s not to love? newcastleweekly.com.au
