I headed out to learn a bit more about yoga recently (see story on page 8) after noticing International Yoga Day was upon us. I must admit to having some pretty stereotypical views on what yoga was – along the lines of people sitting quietly contemplating the world while gently stretching. You certainly can still participate in that type of class, but I was surprised to learn that it is also a great form of exercise and can certainly burn the calories if you chose some of the more energetic classes. I’m yet to try yoga myself, but can see why there are so many studios popping up all over the Hunter region. I’ll let you all know if and when I do! We have some great competitions for kids this week. There are three family passes available to see The Fairies at Newcastle Panthers. The family passes are worth well over $100 each and the youngsters will have plenty of fun. We also have 15 passes to give away for the new Lollipops Playland and Café at Gateshead. The great news for parents and carers is that the adult admission price includes a tea or a coffee or a soft drink or water.

Nurturing and guiding the future stars of dance atapult Dance in Hunter Street, Newcastle is the first contemporary and choreographic dance organisation of its kind to hit the Hunter region. Founded by multi-award winning contemporary dancer and choreographer, Cadi McCarthy, Catapult is a not-for-profit dance organisation that is not to be confused with a dance school. The program exists to support professional choreographers, and emerging artists young and old from around the Hunter, Central Coast and Greater Hunter areas. “There is an amazing amount of dance schools around, but there is nothing for the tertiary professionals,” Ms McCarthy said. “So I guess I’m trying to fill that gap. My dream is that it becomes a national dance hub.” From Catapult came the Flipside Project, which provides opportunities for young and emerging artists to collaborate with some of Australia’s top-calibre professional contemporary choreographers. “Artists from across Australia will come and collaborate with an artist from here in the Hunter where they create work for three weeks, inspiring and mentoring them through a long term creative process,” Ms McCarthy said. Supported by the NSW Department of Education and Ausdance NSW, the program
offers a wide variety of classes which are suited to everyone, from the ‘Catapult Kids’ dance, open to children aged 4-7 and involving creative dance, creative play and movement classes, to community classes in contemporary dance and stretch/yoga, for adults. “People who are brand new to dance or just want to try something new can come in for a class and just experience it,” Ms McCarthy said. Junior and senior classes which are held three times a year, culminate in a major work at the end of the year, collaborating all ages, and engages visual design elements created by the students from University of Newcastle, as well as an original composition from the students at the university music conservatorium. Last year was a piece titled Riptide. Guest artists such as Kristina Chan, twice recipient of the Australian Dance Award for best female contemporary dancer and choreographer Jake Kuzma will be coming aboard to teach masterclasses and intensive sessions in the coming months. Working alongside Ms McCarthy will be a professional choreographer every month in the space full-time starting in August. Catapult Dance is located at 880 Hunter St, Newcastle. For more information or to sign up for a class, contact Cadi McCarthy at flipsideyouthdance@gmail.com -Kayla Stephenson

Hunter residents are being urged to specifically lend a hand to help people in Australia’s deafblind community as new figures show an estimated 288,000 Australians now have hearing and sight impairments. Able Australia - the national notfor-profit organisation that works extensively with people with sight/ hearing impairments - points out that, according to research, over one million Australians will have no hearing and sight by 2050. Able Australia is asking people to donate any smartphones (plus chargers) that they no longer need. The phones will be used
to help deafblind people stay socially connected via a special Braille reader. Prior to reusing the phone all data will be wiped for privacy reasons. Able Australia take the unwanted smartphone and train clients to use it. This is then connected to a Braille machine through Bluetooth technology. Clients can then use the phone instantly to stay in touch with others and even use it to navigate their way around in the community. To donate a smartphone, head toableaustralia.org.au. Donors can
then access a free reply paid label which can be put on the package so they can send in their phone at no cost.

Fun run with a whole lot of colour he Swisse Color Run, a unique fun run with a colourful twist, will be held this Sunday, June 28 at the Newcastle Jockey Club. Participants of all ages and fitness levels will take to the course to celebrate health, happiness and individuality, starting out in white and finishing the course covered from head to toe in a whole spectrum of colours. “It’s the happiest five kilometres on the planet,” national race director Woody Sedgman said. The Color Run started in 2012 in the USA and was recognised in Australia the following year as a unique idea created to involve all walks of life at all variations of fitness levels and, by introducing the colour aspect, the individuality of the fun run was born. “It’s just a really fun way to get active,” Mr Sedgman said. “It’s not a timed race, so it’s more about walking, running, skipping or even dancing your way around – it’s not a competition. Everyone that crosses the finish line is a winner.”
Mr Sedgman said he was thrilled with the support in the Newcastle area, and is expecting a turn out to rival last year’s 10,000 runners. This year’s course will see some exciting additions with a new element, the ‘Snowzone’ which is made up of clumps of bubbles projected into the air to create a snow-like effect. The Finish Line Party promises to be bigger and better with more music and more colour throws. There will also be photo opportunity back drops, sponsored activities and photo booths. “It’s about creating a fun day for the kids, teenagers, adults, even grandma and grandpa can do it. You can dress up in some crazy wacky outfits, get a silly photo, just any excuse to have some fun,” Mr Sedgman said. The Color Run is, this year, partnering with the Lyme Disease Foundation as their charity partner, with participants given the option to fund raise for that charity. Newcastle local, Laura France who suffers from Lyme disease, will be treated to an exclusive VIP experience at the event as she attempts to

walk the course for the first time. “While it isn’t a charitable event, we do see it as important, and we want to shine a light on that aspect,” Mr Sedgman said. “So we encourage runners to run for a reason, when they register they have the opportunity to go fund raise for their chosen charity.” - Kayla Stephenson

Modern thinking in an ancient art o those not familiar with the traditionally tranquil 6000-year-old art, yoga may not be at the top of the list when considering options for a cardio workout. However, that line of thinking is rapidly changing as classes with titles such as Hot Power and Sweat It begin to feature prominently
in studio timetables. President of peak professional body Yoga Australia, Claire Nettley said that while the philosophies and foundations of yoga had remained the same over time, the interpretations had given way to the new styles. “There are many styles and types of yoga,
from the most gentlest of forms to styles that are more strenuous and physically challenging,” Ms Nettley said. “Styles such as Hot Yoga and Vinyasa Flow tend to get the heart rate up and increase your cardiovascular fitness. “Research suggests that yoga could protect your body from cardiovascular disease and metabolic risk factors such as high blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat, and abnormal cholesterol levels just as much as aerobic activities like running.” Madeline Jubb, from Newcastle’s Yoga Loft studio, said the number of male and female students of all ages was ever-increasing. “We definitely get all the demographics in here - there are certainly no rules when it comes to who can do yoga,” Ms Jubb said “We get new people coming in every day. We have people who have never tried yoga before in the same class as those who have been doing it for ten years. “The beautiful thing about yoga that we try to promote is that it’s about your own journey.” The inaugural International Day of Yoga was celebrated on Sunday, June 21 in 177 countries. - Paul Monforte

Honouring the work of a real estate legend n award honouring the work of one of the Hunter’s finest businesswomen has been presented to Shortland’s Jade Bramble. The Sonia Walkom Memorial Scholarship was established to create educational pathways for young people pursuing a career in real estate and was one of more than 35 awards and scholarships presented to students through the Hunter TAFE Foundation. The not-for-profit Foundation was established in 2000 and works with business, education and community leaders to provide financial support to Hunter TAFE students working through personal or financial hardship in order to help them complete their studies.
Ms Bramble said her interest in real estate had been sparked when house-hunting. “I realised, during one of the many open houses I attended, that showing houses would be my ideal job,” she said. “I have made a hobby out of house-hunting and have always been told ‘choose a job you love and you’ll never work a day,’ so that’s what I did. “Unfortunately, I did not find my dream home. So, for now, my plan is to rent until I find a piece of land on which I can build it.” Sonia Walkom passed away in 2014 after a distinguished career spanning more than 40 years in the industry where she led a team of more that 20 agents and support staff

awards were made possible by the generous support of individuals and organisations. “This support is truly making a difference to the lives of students at Hunter TAFE and provides encouragement for students to ensure they continue their education,” Mr Sawyer said. - Paul Monforte

Greater Building Society Wallsend branch manager Jodie Daly
Budding Wallsend artists given the chance to shine tudents in the Wallsend area are being encouraged to display their artistic skills with the chance to win $500 for their school and a personal savings account for themselves from the Greater Building Society. The Greater Building Society Schools Art Competition is a new addition to the annual Wallsend Winter Fair which will be held on Sunday, August 9. Students from pre-schools, primary schools and high schools in the Wallsend area are asked to submit an artwork about the history of the town. The theme was chosen because of the Wallsend Winter Fair this year celebrating its 30th anniversary. Inspiration may be drawn from the early coal mining days, the old rail and trams that travelled through the area, historical buildings, the war years, floods and aboriginal connections. Artwork can be in the form of a painting,
drawing, sculpture or mosaics. Specifications can be obtained from schools or the Wallsend Winter Fair Facebook page. Greater Building Society Wallsend branch manager, Jodie Daly will present a $500 cheque at the Fair to the school with the most entries. This winning school will be determined on a pro-rata basis, with the number of students enrolled at a school divided by the number of entries received. Students judged to have the best three artworks will receive Greater Building Society Life Saver youth banking accounts. First prize is a $100 account, $50 for second and $25 for third. The Wallsend Town Business Association will also be giving away ten, $20 prizes to age group finalists. “The Greater is supporting this fantastic community event as well as helping kids learn about the history of Wallsend and the importance

of saving for the future,” Ms Daly said. Wallsend Business Association president, Max McCorkell said the competition has been the result of the desire to have the community look to the past as a way of helping plan for the future. “All the business owners here believe in the future and potential of Wallsend,” he said. “They would not be investing their time and money in the town if they did not believe that to be the case.” Artmania Wallsend is also offering prizes for the competition with all entrants entered into a draw for the chance to win primary after school art classes and teens art skills development classes. Entries must be received at the student’s school by Thursday, July 30. All entries will be displayed at the Wallsend Winter Fair in Rotunda Park; with finalists being displayed at Wallsend Stockland shopping centre after the Fair. All artwork will be returned to the schools. - Paul Monforte
Rescue helicopter on the move An artist’s impression of the next stage of the Honeysuckle precinct.
Honeysuckle work given the nod he next stage of Newcastle’s Honeysuckle precinct has been approved by the Department of Planning and Environment. “This will be a vibrant new addition to Newcastle’s CBD that is in keeping with the Honeysuckle precinct – encouraging people to live and work in the area,” a Department spokesperson said. “This next stage will feature new shops and cafes with offices and homes in the building above – complementing the work that has already occurred to make this precinct the go-to place in Newcastle.” The building will feature: • 600 square metres of space for shops and cafes • 6,200 square metres of office space bringing jobs to the precinct • 28 one bedroom and 43 two bedroom apartments
Australia’s leading independent hearing healthcare provider is now open in Jesmond
The proposal was put on public exhibition from December 2014 to February this year. The Department’s assessment team considered feedback received from the community, council and other government agencies in making its decision. “We looked at how the building will look in context of the rest of the Honeysuckle precinct of the future and ensured it would get plenty of sunlight and natural ventilation,“ the spokesperson said. “We also ensured the proposal provides improvements to surrounding public areas, which was especially important given the building’s proximity to the waterfront.” To view the Department’s assessment of the proposal, visit majorprojects.planning.nsw.gov.au

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service and Lake Macquarie Airport have signed an agreement for the rescue operational base to be located at the airport. The new operational base, which is subject to assessment and approval of a development application, is part of the restructuring of the Service for a new contract covering Northern NSW. It was announced by the Minister for Health, Jillian Skinner, in December. Service General Manager, Richard Jones, confirmed today that while the operational base would be at the airport, the administration, heavy engineering and other facilities would remain at the Broadmeadow base. Under the new contract, which takes effect in 2017, new Augusta Westland 139 aircraft will replace Bell, BK and Dauphin craft currently located at bases in Newcastle, Tamworth and Lismore. The new aircraft require facilities that cannot readily be provided at the existing Broadmeadow base.

news Councils and tourism association present a united front he formation of a new Hunter Valley Wine and Tourism Alliance Committee will aim to increase visitors and promotion of the region. Representatives from Cessnock City and Singleton Councils and Hunter Valley Wine and Tourism Association (HVWTA) will form the new alliance committee. At this stage, all parties have supported the move ‘in principle’ with a further report to be brought back to both Cessnock City and Singleton Councils by December, outlining the progress of the formation of the alliance.
Cessnock City Council General Manager Stephen Glen said the new committee would enable the three organisations to pool resources and work together. “It’s about having no borders when it comes to promoting visitation and tourism in the Hunter Valley wine country,” he said. “It’s critical for stakeholders of Hunter Valley wine country to have one voice in order to grow the capacity of the destination and ensure sustainable, economic and industry growth.” Singleton Council’s acting General Manager Mark Ihlein

sport Season slipping away from struggling Knights desperate Newcastle Knights team will head north to face the Broncos this week, seeking to salvage their season, after the 30-28 loss to the Cronulla Sharks at Hunter Stadium last Sunday. The home side led by ten points twice, but were undone by the Sharks’ three tries in seven minutes in the second half. Captain Kurt Gidley summed up the frustration of the team’s second-half lapses. “Playing at home, we were up by 10, and we achieved some of the things we wanted to achieve in the first half. But, in the second half, it was an embarrassment at home, in front of our fans, our family and our sponsors,” he said.
The Knights went into the match missing a number of key players through injury - Jeremy Smith, Tyrone Roberts, Adam Clydsdale, Jarrod Mullen, David Fa’alogo, Jack Stockwell, while Joey Leilua was released from his contract in the days leading up to the match. There were some positive signs for the Knights, though, with fullback Jake Mamo scoring a try and setting up another for Carlos Tuimavave after chasing down and knocking back a kick which had all but gone over the dead ball line. Young hooker Danny Levi made his first grade debut off the bench and directed the team around with authority. Earlier, Newcastle’s under 20s side were defeated 24-10 by the

A QUARTER CENTURY OF BLUES
Managing to clock up a 25-year career in the music business before hitting 40 is certainly no mean feat, but for Aussie blues maestro Lloyd Spiegel, it’s business as usual. ith eight albums under his belt and countless kilometres clocked up on roads both here and abroad over the past quarter of a century, Melbourne blues behemoth Lloyd Spiegel has packed more into his 35-odd years than most do in a lifetime. Spiegel started playing gigs in Melbourne blues joints while he was still in primary school before parlaying that prodigious talent into a career that has caused pundits to deem him one of the greatest blues talents in the country. Now, armed with a recently released double live anthology album Double Live Set, - recorded over two sold-out shows at the Wonderland Spiegeltent last year, Spiegel is hitting the road again to reflect on the first 25 years of what has been a remarkable career and he said there was no way he’d miss out on Newcastle. “Newcastle is one of those great working-class towns and, what I’ve found is that working-class towns really do have a fantastic passion for live music and Newcastle certainly is no different – it’s a real music town and some of my favorite musicians come from the area, too,” Spiegel told Newcastle Weekly. Spiegel, whose prodigious fretwork and unique approach have given a fresh face to blues in Australia, said that he sometimes still has to pinch himself when thinking about his 25-year milestone – something that he put down to the tender age he started plying his trade on stages “Not in the slightest does it feel like 25 years,” he laughed. “I'd say that mainly it’s because I was so young – I started gigging when I was about eleven – so I didn’t really have time to process
much, most of my time was spent with my eyes wide open and my mouth gaping. “Also, a lot of the people that I looked up to when I was a kid are still around and playing so I get the opportunity to jump onstage and play with them and feel like an eleven year old kid again.” When you’ve been around for as long as Spiegel has, you tend to amass quite a few songs and he said while he put a lot of thought into the set for the anthology album, the best-laid plans were thrown asunder. “It was really interesting because I did work really hard on putting a set together for the recording - you know, the crowd favourites, the personal favourites, the songs you wrote when younger but never really knew how to deliver them live,” he said. “Anyway, I remember putting the set list on the ground on the first night of recording and it all pretty much went out the window it was all pretty much thought of on the spot, which is how it should be.” So, just what is the secret of sustaining a 25-year-and-counting career as an independent artist? For Spiegel it’s the ability to still be excited. “You’ve really just got to keep yourself excited about what you’re doing,” he said. “There have definitely been times when I wanted to chuck it all in, but it’s about keeping things fresh and challenging yourself. Audiences can spot a phoney pretty easy so, if you’re not challenging yourself or getting excited about what you’re producing, you can’t really expect an audience to.” Lloyd Spiegel – Stag and Hunter Hotel, Friday, July, 3 - Stephen Bisset

THE HEART WANTS WHAT HARTS HAS GOT aving wowed all and sundry, including ironically diminutive funk-rocker Prince, with his debut long player, Daydreamer, last year – prodigious “one man band” Harts (aka Darren Hart) is back with an even more expansive funk-strewn release, the Breakthrough EP, which he will be giving Newcastle punters a taste of when he hits town this weekend. While the Melbourne rockers debut glistened with flourishes of disco, psych and neo funk, his latest effort, while still reveling in funk territory, is a much more straight-ahead guitar riffing release with some true Hendrixian chops. “The EP really represents a natural progression for me,” he said. “While I was touring Daydreamer, one of the things I realised was that one of the things that was sticking out for people was the guitar playing, so I kind of wanted to pursue that a little bit more with Breakthrough, but I still produced and recorded it all on my own as well as playing all the instruments so it’s still definitely Harts.” Another person who encouraged Harts to explore his axe-slinging chops was
none other than purple-clad rocker Prince who, after being impressed with the Daydreamer record, invited Harts to his Paisley Park compound for a spot of jamming. “Prince just gave me so much good advice and when you’ve got the guy responsible for Purple Rain telling you his thoughts on your music, it’s pretty hard not to listen,” he said. “It all happened after he saw some of my stuff on YouTube and I started having a little back and forth with his manager and then eventually Prince called me up and invited me over to his place which was just wild.” With the EP already garnering two barn-burning singles for Harts in When A Man’s A Fool and Breakthrough, Harts said he was already looking to the next release. “It will be good to get off the road for a little while for some time to reflect on everything as I’m not all that keen to be constantly touring,” he said. “I’m also going to need some time to start work on the next release which I’m aiming to have out by mid-2016.” Harts – Cambridge Hotel, Friday, June 26 - Stephen Bisset
A FAMILY AFFAIR aving already pricked up quite a few ears around the traps with Hitchhiker’s Ryme, the barn-burning first single from their debut EP Red, Sydney six-piece the Double Shadows will be returning to one of their favourite haunts, the Lass O’Gowrie, this weekend in support of single number two I’m Gone. “I’m from Newcastle so, it’s always great to get back to play at the Lass – we always have a great time in Newie,” drummer Cash Williams told Newcastle Weekly.
Williams said that the latest single was probably the softest from the EP but, in true Double Shadows style, has more than enough twists and turns to keep you interested. “I’m Gone is kind of the ballad of the EP,” he said. “It’s got a few different movements and lots of rises and falls – by the end of it you won’t be in the same place as you were when it started.” For the uninitiated, the Double Shadows offer up a self-styled “psychedelic voodoo-blues groove”. You can forget guitars as it’s all about
Rays of light Rays of retro sounds and glam are set to shine across our fair city next weekend when doo-wop darlings The Glamma Rays hit town. The creative lovechild of Jodi Phillis (The Clouds), The Glamma Rays are sure to delight Novocastrians with the sultry
horns billowing out everything from smooth grooves to head-banging beats, unconventional, dirty organ lines and washy psych, all led by the huge growling vocals of Nes Casey – think the likes of Dr John, Jack White and Captain Beefhart and you’re in the right ballpark. With the previous single Hitchhikers Rhyme debuting at number one on the AMRAP charts, and I’m Gone promising similar, Williams said the plan was to strike while the iron was hot. “We’re planning a double

Production still - a new take on the Ned Kelly Legend.
A LEGEND REIMAGINED The story of Australia’s most famed bushranger, Ned Kelly, will be reimagined by the Queensland Theatre Company in a gripping new production, set for one show only at the civic Theatre next month. While history states Dan Kelly perished in the Glenrowan Hotel fire, Queensland playwright Matthew Ryan explores a brother’s
betrayal, escape and plan for a new life in Queensland in Kelly. Ned Kelly has never faded from our national consciousness. Indeed, the passing years have only served to build his legendary stature and as Australia’s most famous bushranger, he lived his life bucking the system. However, Matthew Ryan’s Kelly suggests Ned’s brother Dan wasn’t ready
to lay down his life for his comrade and escaped the siege at Glenrowan, leaving Ned for dead. “Kelly gets our national conscience ticking at a different tempo, we begin to weigh up one brother’s self-proclaimed cowardice against the other’s bravery,” QTC artistic director Wesley Enoch said. On the night before his execution, Ned Kelly sits in his grimy cell at Old Melbourne Gaol when his brother Dan, who Ned believed died at Glenrowan, visits disguised as a priest. Dan is seeking Ned’s forgiveness before fleeing to Queensland to forget his past, with a new name and new life. Kelly was produced by QTC for their 2012 main stage season. Intimate and compact in design yet a theatrically ambitious drama, which is both contemporary and accessible as it wrestles with
themes surrounding one of our country’s greatest historic icons. The award-winning set by Simone Romaniuk, is a simple minimalist metal gaol cell that seemingly floats in space beautifully lit by Ben Hughes with a haunting and powerful sound design and composition by Guy Webster. I ME MINE leader in his own way, as he was a guiding light for so many.” Carr added the show would also attempt to uncover the essence of Harrison, as told through scant interviews he gave throughout his life. “The thing with George, especially after the Beatles ended, was that he didn’t say all that much but when he did, he said a hell of a lot.” While Lennon and McCartney are the obvious touchstones when thinking of the Fab Four, there is no denying that Harrison was largely responsible for creating their sonic backbone and visual aesthetic- particularly during the Sgt. Pepper days. “George really was the innovator, in my opinion – I mean he was the one that introduced the band to all of the eastern philosophies that really changed their whole outlook. Also, those

Having taken on such other diverse roles as touring with celebrity chef Pete Evans in his Paleo Way Tour and treading the boards in the theatrical production Rolling Thunder Vietnam, he also found time to write a one-man show about one of his personal heroes – George Harrison – a show that will be making a return trip to Newcastle this weekend. “The show is, of course a celebration of George’s fantastic music, but also a celebration of his unique philospohies on life,” Carr told Newcastle Weekly. “To me, George was a spiritual

and all disagree on how to best deal with Riley’s changing circumstances until Joy and Sadness get sucked out into the dark recesses of Riley’s mind. Like many Pixar films before it, Inside Out is a visual feat that relies more on creating spectacular worlds than big bells-and-whistles action set pieces, while the jokes come thick and fast making this arguably the funniest Pixar effort since Finding Nemo. While never living up to the heights of Nemo or Monsters Inc, Inside Out is a great example of a studio willing to put substance over style. Mmmmm MILANO’S Milano's, one of the jewels in the crown of the Lake Macquarie dining scene is under new management but, when it comes to providing sumpotious fare in an idyllic setting, it's business as usual.

DINING
It’s all about location, location, location at Milano’s
Chicken breast served with Persian lentils, baby vegetables, and a creamy herb sauce
ilano’s on the Lake is possibly the most honest description of location imaginable. This restaurant is not situated ‘near’ Lake Macquarie with distant glimpses of its beauty. It is not across the road with potential water views obscured by parked cars. Milano’s is, quite literally, at the edge of the water, which makes it the perfect location for that special occasion, a quiet dinner or a catchup with old friends. Milano's underwent a change in management in January this year with the team behind Belmont’s Deck 56 taking the reins, and while there are plans afoot to revamp the mood of the eatery to include things like live music
WINE
(singer-songwriter Alex Lloyd will be making an appearance there on July 10), the same focus on great food that had, quite rightly, earned the restaurant a long-held reputation as one of the best places to eat on the Lake, is still here – in spades. Chef Ashley Dantl told Newcastle Weekly that the main philosophy behind the Milano’s menu was to let the food speak for itself. “It’s all about clean and simple dishes and not overcomplicating things,” she said. “It’s important to let the ingredients shine through.” Having been lucky enough to sample Milano’s lunch menu last week, I would have to say this
definitely was the case. An entrée of pork belly and scallops, served with a cauliflower puree provided the perfect start to a magnificent lunch experience. It can be a tough ask to get wellcooked pork belly, but the Milano’s version was an absolute delight. A super crispy crackling lay atop some deliciously tender pork that had been cooked just long enough to allow the fat to render, while coupling this with equally well cooked and subtly sweet scallops and a silky smooth and creamy cauliflower mash made this entrée definitely one to write home about. With anticipation piqued after such a fantastic entrée, expectations were again blown away with the arrival of my main – chicken breast served with Persian lentils, baby vegetables and a creamy herb sauce. The ample portion of chicken breast was as succulent as can be while the fresh and herbaceous sauce added an enticing depth of flavour and the stronger texture and deeper flavor of the Persian lentils took this dish well and truly to the next level. Add some well cooked baby vegetables and micro herbs for colour and you have a true standout. My dining partner decided on the crispy–skin kingfish with citrus risotto and while the strong flavoured, robust fish was definitely the hero of the dish, the zesty and fresh citrus risotto added a welcome “zing” on the palate. If you’re looking for great food in one of the most idyllic locations in the region, then Milano’s should be at the top of your to do list. Milano's on the Lake – 88 Soldiers Road, Pelican. THE LAST WORD ON FRESHNESS here’s little doubt that our region is fecund with fantastic fresh produce and the Newcastle City Farmers Market is a great place to see some of our best local producers’ wares in one convenient location. The market is a literal cornucopia of organically and conventionally grown and prepared fare such as lamb, beef, pork, goat, chicken, duck, charcuterie, pate, terrines and cured meats. If that’s not enough, the selection of hand-crafted patisserie delights, fresh fruit and vegetables, delicious preserves,
jams, sauces chutneys and herbs, handmade chocolates, organic breads and all manner of gastronomic delights from around the globe, are sure to excite even the most cynical food fancier. Aside from the abundance of fresh produce, the Newcastle City Farmers Markets is also home to one of the region’s largest gatherings of artisans. There are blacksmiths, jewellery makers, painters, photographers, toy makers, fiber and paper artists and much more. You will also find plenty of stalls selling gifts, from Fair Trade Products through to hand-made soaps and beauty products. So, if it’s freshness you want, you can’t go past the Newcastle City Farmers Market. The next Newcastle City Farmers Market will be on at Newcastle Showground on Sunday, June 28.

Approximately 3.6 million Australians have diabetes. National Diabetes Week runs from July 12 - 18.
The appeal of perfume is that it is both feminine and empowering. Perfume has so many different scents be it floral, spicy, fruity or fresh. The key is to find the right scent for you, or layer scents to create your own unique variation.
Mon Jasmin Noir 50mL $100.00 Bulgari
Type 1 diabetes occurs when the pancreas does not produce insulin. It represents 10-15 per cent of cases. It is not caused by lifestyle factors, yet its incidence is increasing at a rate of about 3 per cent a year.
Forever Vera 50ml $69.00 Vera Wang
In type 2, insulin is still produced but does not work effectively. While it most often affects mature adults, more young people are getting type 2 diabetes. Gestational diabetes occurs in pregnancy and mostly disappears after the birth. WINTER HAIR CARE Winter calls for some extra effort and a few changes to your hair care routine. Excessive dryness during these cold winter months will lead to hair breakage and a dry scalp. So, it’s important to winter-proof your hair as soon as the cold season begins. Here are some tips to get you started.
Stop washing your hair so often: Overly washing your hair will strip it of the natural oils it needs before it has the chance to reach the dry ends. Washing your hair 2 – 3 times a week is recommended. In between, use a dry shampoo to revive and restore hair. Dry shampoo- fresh $9.95 Batiste
Retain that moisture: The low moisture level in the air will cause a decrease in the moisture level in your hair leaving it feeling and looking dry. To fight this it’s recommended to use a deep conditioning treatment once a week/ fortnight. Dualsenses rich repair shampoo & conditioner $25.45 Goldwell
Ditch the heat: We are prone to using our straighteners and curlers more during the winter to tame fly-away hairs. To make it look more alive, opt for a heat-free style (like braids before bed), alternatively, spend more time on your blow-dry in the mornings, don’t forget to use a heat protectant.
When in doubt, mask it out: Combine the use of hair restorative oils and an overnight hair mask to bring life back into your hair. Morrocan/argan oils are great for preventing split ends, restoring shine and controlling frizz.
Scalp to hair thermal protector $26.95 NAK
Restorative hair mask $49.50 Morrocanoil
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate: Taking care of dry winter tresses starts in the shower. A great hydrating shampoo/conditioner will infuse moisture back into your hair in the very place it starts to strip away. Remember to massage into the scalp using finger tips, not nails. Dualsenses rich repair shampoo and conditioner $25.45 Goldwell

PICK OF THE WEEK Incredible Burt Wonderstone Saturday, NBN, 8.50pm, M (2013) Steve Carell (left) enters Will Ferrell territory here, playing the titular over-the-top magician in this crass comedy. After years of success on the Las Vegas strip, Burt’s career starts to lose its magic after his sidekick Anton (Steve Buscemi) quits and he is fired from his casino gig. But when edgy street magician Steve (Jim Carrey) starts to draw the crowds on Burt’s former patch, he must put aside his ego and his hatred for Anton to fight for their livelihood. Magic, mischief and a whole lot of laughs.

Saturday, SBS1, 9.30pm, M (2005) Finally, a Woody Allen film that everyone can enjoy. Jonathan Rhys Meyers (right) plays Chris Wilton, an ex-professional tennis player who takes a job as a tennis coach at an exclusive club. His first pupil is Tom (Matthew Goode), who befriends Chris and invites him into his family circle, where he is paired off with Tom’s sister Chloe (Emily Mortimer) while lusting after Tom’s girlfriend, actress Nola (Scarlett Johansson). From this set-up a thriller unfolds, with the consequences of an affair building to an intriguing climax.
Wednesday, GO!, 9.30pm, AV15+ (2008) Jeremy Renner (left) is sensational as William James, a US army sergeant whose reckless approach to bomb disposal raises concerns within his on-edge team. By-the-book JT Sanborn (Anthony Mackie) and his anxious offsider Owen Eldridge (Brian Geraghty) are still shocked by the death of their last commander (Guy Pearce) and don’t appreciate their brazen leader’s tactics. Filming on the border of Iraq, Bigelow expertly paints a frightening picture of a perilous land in which death is a constant threat.

Ariana is being encouraged to favour the gentler side of her nature so she can achieve a personal or professional ambition. She is well on her way to getting what she wants and shouldn’t allow herself to be side-tracked by anyone or anything. Throughout the next 12 months Ariana might be wearing blinkers that prevent her from seeing anything other than what’s right under her nose.
ARIES MAR 21 – APR 20
CANCER JUNE 22 – JULY 22
LIBRA SEP 24 – OCT 23
CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 20
Communication is the key to sorting out complicated and contradictory circumstances, but you must slow down and keep your frustrations under control in order to resolve disagreements. Determination and perseverance will ensure you overcome anything at this time.
Trouble is brewing either at home or at work which has the potential to blow up way out of proportion. Rather than trying to control matters, it could be a better option to let things reach flash point and then you can settle them once and for all.
Financially, you will need to take a direct approach when it comes to dealing with cash matters and might have to make cutbacks on some of your high expectations. Nothing huge or flamboyant will happen as quickly as you would like. Pace yourself as much as you can.
With Mars in a difficult aspect with Uranus, colleagues at work could be making you feel tense with their constant interruptions. If this becomes too much of an inconvenience you must speak up, but do so with a certain amount of tact as it won't pay to make enemies.
TAURUS APR 21 – MAY 21
You have no choice but to take loved ones and friends for what they are and accept their decisions. Mercury's Retrograde movement in recent weeks has undoubtedly exposed a few raw nerve endings, but these experiences have helped you to grow in emotional intelligence and awareness.
SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 22
AQUARIUS JAN 21 – FEB 19
VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23
SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21
Accountants and bank managers can be approached with confidence and this is a good time to apply for a loan. Improvements to your home or valuable new domestic possessions will add comfort and pleasure to your life.
GEMINI MAY 22 – JUNE 21 Mars in your own sign is stirring up tensions in your personal relationships. It may seem coldhearted to take a completely practical approach to certain situations, but sentiment rarely provides a solid foundation. This means confronting difficult truths, but, believe it or not, will ultimately see your confidence flourishing.
LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23
On the home front, many of you may need to talk through financial matters, plan a new budget or determine where money has been spent. Once you have done this you can stem the flow or, if you discover some spare money hanging around, splash out on a little luxury.
Now is a good time for sorting out matters connected with tax or bureaucrats. If there are complicated issues to deal with, do your best to be cooperative as it is certainly won’t pay to get defiant with authority figures, no matter how strong the temptation might be. It might be a good idea to be as diplomatic and charming as you can be. Mars and Mercury are in your opposite sign of Gemini so you can expect a certain amount of tension within the family, with housemates or work colleagues.
Imposing your thoughts on other people, especially those in the older or younger generations, will create a stir both at home and at work, resulting in your being told that you are stubborn, short-sighted or simply making trouble. An insightful exchange with a loved one will bring revelations.
PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20 Mars in Gemini is in a difficult aspect with Neptune and when it comes to dealing with domestic matters you feel passionately about, your emotional involvement may cloud the picture. By trying to be as objective as possible, whatever you decide will be to everyone's best interest.

FUN AND EXERCISE AT LOLLIPOPS Lollipops Playland and Café Newcastle, an indoor children’s play centre for kids aged one to 11, has opened on the site of the former Fair Play Cafe on the Pacific Highway at Gateshead. Manager Jade Wells said the business is new, with new owners, and is not connected to the Lollipops at Kotara which closed last year. Gated entry and matching ID wrist bracelets for parents/carers and children ensures kids cannot leave without the adults who brought them and an adult entry includes a complimentary drink. Lollipops Playland and Cafe Newcastle offers casual play visits, playgroup visits and birthday parties. It is open seven days from 9am to 5.30pm. For more information, visit newcastle.lollipopsplayland.com.au
Enter to WIN Newcastle Weekly has 15 Super Entry passes, valued at $12.90 each, for Lollipops Playland and Café Newcastle to give away to our readers. To enter, email competitions@newcastleweekly.com.au with ‘Lollipops’ in the subject field. Tell us your name, full contact details and the answer to the following question: ‘In which suburb is Lollipops Playland and Café Newcastle located?’ Entries close and winners drawn 9am on Friday, July 3. One entry per person. Permit No. LTPM/15/00427

“It’s what got me into a great career, I met a lot of interesting, cool and fun people. It’s my joy in life.”
FAMILY “I mean it’s what life is all about. Belinda (wife) and I have three kids, Corey, 18, Gypsy, 9 and Coco, 3.”
SURFING “I love surfing, it keeps me healthy and fit. It’s a great way to make new friends too.”
Craig “Rosie” Rosevear FORMER THE SCREAMING JETS DRUMMER
Craig “Rosie” Rosevear is a musical trifecta, being a professional drummer and percussionist, a respected teacher and rock legend. In 2007 he alongside wife Belinda opened a music school, Rosie’s School of Rock located in Adamstown, Newcastle. Rosie is best known for his role with legendary Aussie rock band The Screaming Jets. - Kayla Stephenson
TRAVELLING “I love to travel, especially to Bali. I really like the food, the surf and the culture it has.”
KISS “They are the reason I started playing the drums, when I was about 12 years old they toured Australia and I had to see them. It’s what started it all.” (Supported KISS in 1996)
