This week... From the editor We have some great advice for you in our feature story on Family Doctor Week (July 19 to 25). As Dr Wendy Bridges points out, people don’t need to struggle alone with their illnesses and the official theme for this year’s event is You and Your Family Doctor: the best partnership in health. I think a lot of us, myself definitely included, wouldn’t even think about going to the doctor if we weren’t sick. Finding the time to make an appointment just for some preventative care or a check-up might seem like too big of an ask, but there certainly is plenty of truth in the old adage ‘prevention is better than cure’.

Importantly, Dr Bridges points out that calling an ambulance and getting to hospital quickly is your best bet for serious health issues such as suspected heart attacks and strokes. Yes, your family doctor would be able to recognise and give some treatment on the spot, but hospitals are much better equipped to deal with these cases.

Your family doctor should be you first stop for most health-related questions and treatments.
Patients and doctors: best partnership in health The hard work and dedication of GPs is being highlighted during Family Doctor Week he importance of forming a long-standing relationship with your local GP is being highlighted through the Australian Medical Association’s (AMA) Family Doctor Week (July 19-25). Figures from the AMA show that almost 90 per cent of Australians have a regular family doctor. Blackbutt Doctors Surgery owner Dr Wendy Bridges said she highly recommended people have their own doctor or at least their own practice. “With many doctors working part-time and a lot of female doctors having to look after their own kids, sometimes your doctor may not be there, but if you pick at least two doctors from the same practice, your notes will always be available and the information will be shared,” Dr Bridges said. “A big part of medicine is that relationship – seeing how people’s health develops over time and remembering things patients have told us before, knowing things about family members, if that is relevant – keeping family history in mind, particularly if they also treat your members, having that wealth of knowledge. “So much more can be gained by having an ongoing relationship than presenting the same problem to five different people – it’s a bit like watching detective shows like Sherlock Holmes bit-by-bit you piece together the mystery of knowing that person and, when you keep going to different people, you have start all over again from scratch.
“It has been proven that it’s more expensive and more dangerous to go around seeing lots of doctors. “It’s less expensive and more productive to keep seeing the same doctor who knows you.” Dr Bridges said it was important to not only see the doctor when you were sick as there was a great deal of preventative health care available these days. “If you just go when you are sick, yes you will get help for that problem you’ve got but, if you have some preventative health care, there are many problems that you may never need to have because a little bit of prevention is much better than cure,” she said. Dr Bridges added that she would like to see more couples speak to their doctor before deciding to start a family. “There’s so much that can be done in the prepregnancy planning phase to make sure people have healthy babies,” she said. “There are always new developments in how we can make sure mother and baby are healthy and you need to be thinking about these things months before deciding to try for a baby.” Getting help with lifestyle diseases was also important, according to Dr Bridges. “I hear people say to me all the time that doctors can’t help them with their weight, that it is all down to them and there is no point going to the doctor. “People are sort of resigned to the fact that these lifestyle diseases such as hypertension, obesity and diabetes are something they have to
battle on with alone. “If they saw the doctor and pursued it as a team sport, it would be more productive and I feel that people get a bit down on themselves and accept the situation or give up. “Doctors aren’t going to scold them, we know that these type of health battles are battles you will have for the rest of your life.” While family doctors can handle the vast majority of health complaints, Dr Bridges said there were situations in which people should head straight to hospital. “People who are having acute chest pain right at that moment should head to the hospital immediately. “That also applies if you suspect someone is having a stroke or a heart attack or if someone is having a severe asthma attack. Every minute counts in those situations.” - Paul Monforte

Community comes together in support of Carrington arrington residents and business have united with a newly-formed group, aiming to improve and support the community by listening to the needs of the people. The Carrington Community Council will be chaired by director of Newcastle entertainment company Big Apachee owner, Marcus Wright.
“Our goals are to improve Carrington to benefit the community,” Mr Wright said. “What we are trying to do is start off small.” Mr Wright said one of the council’s main priorities was to push for the current temporary cruise-ship terminal to remain in Carrington and be upgraded. A report earlier this year from
the Urban Development Institute of Australia suggested the terminal be relocated adjacent to the proposed Wickham transport interchange. The community council started an online presence through a Facebook page and website (carringtoncommunity.wordpress. com) with the aim that these become a hub for locals and visitors to the Carrington area. They will be updated with current and upcoming events, as well as the history of the area and recent news. “There is a bit of a zoning issue we are trying to address by speaking with the (Newcastle City) Council,” Mr Wright said. “Recently, there was also a transport issue when the train line closure went through and some of the elderly couldn’t afford the taxi fares, so we stepped in and put in a transport solution. We got a couple of buses, and people to put their names

She is incredible, just swims like a fish. Mr Wright said Carrington had a close-knit community which the council aimed to promote and enhance. “We are aiming to make a difference. Carrington has a lot of history and we want to share that and allow people to experience it.” Thus far, the council is made up of five members, Mr Wright, Peter Haas, Christine Rockley, Peter Ryan and Jaci Lappin. Meetings are held every two months at the Carrington Bowling Club. The next meeting will be on Thursday, September 3 at 6pm. - Kayla Stephenson

ake Macquarie City Council is calling on 18-to-25 year olds to share their ideas with prominent industry futurists and help explore how technology can be used to shape the region’s future. A forum called TomorrowMakers will be held at 6pm on Wednesday, July 29 and is a free event featuring six interactive stations and a panel of experienced guest speakers. The stations will consist of app development; councils online; city management and infrastructure; new industries and innovation in local business; community skills and digital inclusion and great places to meet and connect. One of the guest speakers with be Phillip McIntyre from the University of Newcastle, who will draw upon his extensive experience in creative industries. “I worked in the music for around 25 years as a songwriter, performer, producer of records, making videos,” Professor McIntyre said. “As well as this I worked as a music journalist for around eight years talking to people like David Bowie. “As part of my work with the university, I research the creative process and how the
creative industries work. I have an Australian Research Council funded project to map the creative industries in the Hunter. “ Professor McIntyre also recently spoke at the Newcastle Innovation festival. Each panellist in the forum will be given five minutes to talk on their chosen field and stimulate the audience to participate in a Q&A. Lake Macquarie City Council is aiming to build a rapport with the younger generation, and to hear their ideas and gain feedback on the strategies they are developing as well as to demonstrate to the 18-25 demographic their ability to get involved. “It is relatively similar to what we are doing here at the university, educating our students to realise it’s not a question of going out and getting jobs any more it’s about going out and making the jobs,” Professor McIntyre said. TomorrowMakers will be on at The Place, Charlestown Square on Wednesday, July 29. he Knights rediscovered their defensive steel in their 30-2 thrashing of the Gold Coast Titans at Hunter Stadium on Saturday with the same attitude required this weekend for the clash with premiers South Sydney. Knights coach Rick Stone said the performance showed there was plenty of spirit and desire in the side. “There was some resolve, and some intent and desire in what we did defensively,” Stone said. “To keep the opposition to two probably suggested that something went alright in the defensive side of things. “We could have been a bit tidier in the back-end of the game - we had a lot of possession and could have had a bit more patience with the footy.” Captain Kurt Gidley thanked fans who came out to support the side in difficult weather conditions. “Thanks to all our fans who came out and supported us and stuck around right until the end,” he said. “It’s a good pat on the back for them.
“It was a tough night, conditions-wise, and it probably would have been easier to sit at home in front of the heater and watch it.” The Knights dominated proceedings with seven players – Gidley, Jake Mamo, Kade Snowden, Korbin Sims, Tariq Sims, David Fa’alogo and Chris Houston – running for well over 100 metres each. The Knights’ under 20s side also had a strong win over the Titans, running out victors by 3810 with winger Fuiamamao Utu scoring five tries. The NSW Cup team was overrun late by the Wyong Roos to go down 28-26 despite Honeti Tuha crossing for three tries. Saturday’s match against the Rabbitohs at ANZ Stadium gets underway at 7.30pm with the under 20s match beforehand at 5.15pm. Newcastle’s NSW Cup side will play Canterbury at Belmore Sportsground on Sunday afternoon at 1.45pm. - Paul Monforte

The perfect bike for toddlers Balance bikes have no brakes and no pedals, which is what makes them so easy for toddlers to learn on. Once a toddler is tall enough to be able to sit on the bike with a slight bend in their knees and both feet flat on the floor, they are ready to go! At first, they will straddle the bike and move one foot and then the other to push the bike along. SMILOVICI STILL TOUGH here’s no denying that stand-up comedy has come along in leaps and bounds in this country over the past decade or so, with acts like Wil Anderson, Tom Ballard and Josh Thomas appearing regularly on our TV screens. If there was one person that deserves thanks for popularising stand-up in this country, it would have to be George Smilovici. Thanks to his seminal monologue I’m Tough, which topped the Australian, NZ and US comedy charts, Smilovici took comedy out of the clubs and into the stadiums, performing with the likes of Joe Cocker, Midnight Oil, Fleetwood Mac and the late Joan Rivers. Smilovici told Newcastle Weekly that the genesis for the routine came from the unlikeliest of places. “Early on, I ended up getting a gig supporting
Midnight Oil at the Royal Antler Hotel in Sydney which was one of their popular haunts,” he explained. “I got onstage and all I could see was a sea of furry heads and I came out and said “good evening, Midnight Oil are up next, my name is baby oil and I’m here to lubricate you.’ Next thing they threw everything, ashtrays, cans, everything at me so I went home and decided that if I was going to play to these kind of crowds – I’d need some rock and roll-type material and that’s where I’m Tough was born.” So what is it about the craft that keeps Smilovici coming back after all these years? “I guess it’s like heroin – no, wait, it’s more like cocaine – not that I’d know, I’ve never touched the stuff, I just like the smell of it,” he

Rosie’s School of Rock owner, Craig Rosevear, told Newcastle Weekly that performing on TV was the pinnacle for many established bands and it was amazing for his students to have that opportunity while still in primary or high school “The vibe when we got to the NBN studios was magic, the production crew were really supportive and were stoked to see so many young talented musicians”. time out - meet the artist JILL ORR When did you first know you wanted to be a professional artist? Art was something I always did. I never think about doing it professionally. I think I’m a maker. Exhibiting is agony for me and I only do it because I learn so much to see what I do in a different way. Describe your work. It’s anything I see that I want to have a conversation about. I exhibit flowers but often paint landscapes, use abstract concepts constantly and love to draw people. I like to paint things that are with me so I’m learning new things every time. Everything requires something different: graphite or ink or paint. I respond to the moment. I love the unpredictability. I love that song Don’t Fence Me In. What inspires you? Teaching is fantastic. I learn so much exchanging ideas with students.
Having my kids adds to everything. They take me places I might have left behind. Everything is a problem to tackle. You don’t know how you’ll do it and THAT is the inspiration! What has been your greatest achievement? Is it an achievement to still passionately love the thing you’ve been doing all your life? What would be your advice to budding artists? To be honest. Jill Orr’s current exhibition UNSPOKEN is on at Nanshe studio gallery in Hamilton until the 15 August. An opening event will be held at the gallery tonight (Thursday 23 July).

FOOD
Recipe and image from Cook Book by Matt Preston, $39.99, published by Plum.
METHOD
INGREDIENTS
Preheat the oven to 180°C. Butter and flour a 6-cup muffin tray.
Puddings
Place the dates, tea and bicarb soda into a bowl and set aside for 10 minutes.
180g dates, chopped 180ml black tea ¼ teaspoon bicarbonate of soda 160g flour ½ teaspoon baking powder Salt flakes
Combine the flour and baking powder and add a pinch of salt. Cream the butter and sugar in a food processor or electric mixer until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time and combine well. Now the dates are softened, mash them into the tea with the back of a fork and fold in the flour. Now add this to the creamed butter and eggs and combine.
60g butter 120g brown sugar 2 eggs
Divide the mixture between the muffin cups and bake for 20 minutes. Test with a skewer to make sure they are cooked and remove from the oven.
Butterscotch sauce 150g butter 150ml cream 150g brown sugar Pinch of salt Splash of white vinegar, to taste
While the puddings are in the oven, make the tangy butterscotch sauce. Place the butter, cream, sugar and salt into a small saucepan and bring to the boil while stirring to combine. Simmer for about 5 minutes while gently stirring, letting the sauce thicken, and then remove from the heat and add a splash of vinegar and extra salt to taste. Serve hot over the puddings when they come out of the oven.

PICK OF THE WEEK Due Date Friday, GO!, 9.30pm, MA15+ (2010) Todd Phillips (The Hangover) revisits similar comedy ground in this road trip bromance. Highly strung father-to-be Peter Highman (Robert Downey Jr, pictured) becomes entangled with pot-smoking wannabe actor Ethan (Zach Galifianakis) as he boards a plane to Los Angeles to get home in time for his child’s birth. When Ethan’s antics get both men kicked off the plane and put on a “no fly” list, Peter has no option but to share a car with Ethan and drive across the country.
Friday
Clash Of The Titans
Jack Reacher
Sunday, GO!, 6.30pm, PG (2010) Aussie Sam Worthington squares off against Greek gods as Perseus, the mortal son of Zeus (Liam Neeson), king of the gods, who swears revenge when his family is killed by underworld ruler Hades (Ralph Fiennes), the enemy of mankind. Watching over Perseus on his quest is ethereal spiritual guide Io (Gemma Arterton, right) but he’s on his own when faced with Hades’ deformed servant Acrisius (Jason Flemyng). French director Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk) employs plenty of stunning visual effects and climaxes with an aweinspiring finale in this affectionate remake of the 1981 original.
Saturday, TEN, 8.55pm, M (2012) Tom Cruise (pictured) tries to establish a new blockbuster franchise as author Lee Child’s titular cop-turned-drifter who becomes part of the investigation when a former army sniper takes the rap for gunning down five innocent people. But as defence lawyer Rosamund Pike quickly discovers, Reacher may prove to be more trouble than he’s worth. Directed and adapted from the ninth Reacher novel One Shot, the first movie outing for Child’s vigilante hero should do for Cruise what Taken did for Liam Neeson.

CANCER JUNE 22 – JULY 22
LIBRA SEP 24 – OCT 23
CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 20
If there have been any quibbles with flatmates or family you must be prepared to face up to these issues. Unfortunately, you’re such an emotional soul that sometimes you find it difficult to put your feelings to one side. Be very careful of taking offence where none is intended.
With Mars in Cancer, everyone will seem quite emotional but don’t allow your own feelings to erupt or you could regret it later. Financially, a windfall will put you over the moon, but special outlays on your home and family between November and March will need careful budgeting.
The focus is on your career and you can show how efficient and confident you are; if a colleague is being difficult, you’ll find it easier to handle them if you remain serene and polite at all times. In fact, it will really take the wind out of their sails.
You are idealistic but recent events have made you feel disappointed in people whom you held in high regard. You’re a harsh judge of yourself and others, however you need to take life a little bit less seriously or you could sour what seem to be really positive relationships.
TAURUS APR 21 – MAY 21
LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23
Your lover could show a flash of jealousy or irritation about your friendships. If this is a one-off problem, don’t worry about it, but if it’s part of a campaign to isolate you from others, you need to look closely at your partner to work out what it all means.
Time spent in quiet contemplation will be extremely valuable to you. If you don’t rest, you’re likely to be laid up and strains and sprains of all types are possible. Be mindful of your diet and try to get to bed early. Give yourself permission to relax.
The focus is on overseas countries. The stars are enhancing your charisma and you’re attracting followers like a magnet. If you are fancy free you will be able to be choosy. If you are married, you and your partner will be focusing on planning your next overseas trip.
GEMINI MAY 22 – JUNE 21
VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23
SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21
The focus is on your social life and you must get networking if your career needs a boost. Sometimes your single mindedness blinds you to the merits of socialising with colleagues and contacts. Make a special effort to cultivate anyone in your professional circle who can help you.
In complicated financial situations, work to your priorities to achieve what matters most. Also dot every 'I' and cross every 'T' with a tax or super matter, as it will smooth the path ahead. A complex emotional situation may be a challenge but reflective periods will bring insights and revelations.

It seems as though your whole value system is going through an overhaul so it’s time to let go of certain attitudes that are no longer working for you. Focus on soothing a tendency for a short fuse and don’t let impatience detract from joy in the good things happening.

BEACH “I grew up in Merewether, so the beach has always been a huge part of my life. We are so lucky to have such beautiful natural attractions so close to us here in Newcastle. Whichever suburb you live in, you are always close to a fantastic beach. I’m proud to be Chair of Council’s Coastal Revitalisation Working Party.”
My favourite things SPORT “I’m really passionate about sport, both watching it and participating. I prefer to watch sport live if I can rather than on TV. I was a keen basketballer growing up and was lucky enough to represent NSW. I still like to participate when I can, but I don’t have a lot of time to do so these days.”
COFFEE “I think I’ve been to almost every establishment in Newcastle that sells coffee. I think our city makes some of the best coffee in the world and I make sure I tell people that wherever I go. It’s been fantastic to see the coffee revolution that has occurred in Newcastle and across the country.”
FAMILY
Nuatali Nelmes
“I’m obsessed with my family – my husband Stuart and our three wonderful children Archie, 12, Stella, 10 and Ruby, 8.”
LORD MAYOR OF NEWCASTLE
It would be hard to find a more passionate Novocastrian than Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Nuatali Nelmes. Born and raised in Newcastle, Ms Nelmes was elected to Council in 2008 and, last year, was elected to the top job. Aside from promoting the qualities of our coastline and spruiking our coffee to the world, Ms Nelmes is also a keen participant in numerous community activities. If you are really lucky, you may also find yourself lining up her in a local game of basketball. - Paul Monforte
THE OBELISK “I attended Newcastle East Primary School and I remember, in 1986, when I was in Year 5, we went up to The Obelisk to see Halley’s Comet. Now, every time I’m around that area, it reminds me of those times.”

The Health Star Rating. The more stars, the healthier the choice. Simple.
Choosing healthier food is getting easier with the introduction of Health Star Ratings on the front of many packaged foods. Ranging from ½ to 5 stars, Health Stars help you make healthier choices at a glance. The number of stars is based on energy, nutrients such as saturated fat, sugars, sodium and protein, and the fruit and vegetable content. To find out more, visit www.healthstarrating.gov.au
