This week... From the editor I urge you all to do yourself a favour and check out the Lost in the 50s museum featured as our cover story this week. I was lucky enough to visit the secret location in preparation of the article and was extremely impressed by the size of the museum and the sheer number of memorabilia items that owner Glen Jennings has put together over 30 years. I must admit to having no real interest in cars beyond needing a reliable one to transport me to and from work, but I could have easily spent many hours there. Seeing the detail and craftsmanship of the almost 60-year-old cars was a great privilege not to mention the thousands of pieces of memorabilia on subjects such as Coca Cola, McDonald’s and Elvis Presley, which cover every spare centimetre of the museum. Also in this week's edition, we are highlighting the Youth Rockin’ the Black Dog music competition, which as the name suggests, aims to raise awareness of mental health issues amongst our young people. There are a number of organisations, such as the Hunter Institute of Mental Health and headspace, working hard behind the scenes without much fanfare and we hope our story will go part of the way to giving some ‘air’ to their important work. - Paul Monforte

A touch of American nostalgia in Newcastle ucked away in suburban Cameron Park lies the Lost in the 50s American Classic Car Museum, a nostalgic trip back to a simpler way of life. Three decades of nurturing his love of classic vehicles has seen museum owner Glen Jennings amass a collection of 65 American-produced cars from the 1950s and ‘60s along with 900 pieces of memorabilia for that era. Visitors to the 2000-square metre site, are greeted by a collage of visual stimulation on a scale rarely seen in more sedate museums. All the major American carmakers are on display – Chevrolet, Buick, Ford, Chrysler – and
all in immaculate condition. Even the Batmobile and a DeLorean, crafted in the style of Back to the Future movie franchise, make an appearance. Every centimetre of wall space is put to use to showcase the range of memorabilia including signs, photographs, toys and records. The museum is available for viewing only once a month, with Mr Jennings fully occupied running his security company, National Event Services. “The museum is certainly not a business, it’s a hobby,” Mr Jennings said. “Once a month we open it, but we don’t advertise it and we don’t give out the address.
“So to come down here and have a look, people have to ring and make a booking and their name goes on the entry list. “If your name is not on there, you don’t get in. “Once a month is enough for me, because I’m busy with a lot of other things.” Mr Jennings also said the viewing days appealed not only to motoring enthusiasts. “We have a DJ, 50’s rock and roll music and American food. It’s a great day out for the whole family.” Mr Jennings said the idea for the museum had evolved, quite simply, through necessity. “Prior to this, I had my cars in several different locations around Newcastle, but never on display,” he said. “I’d just get them out occasionally and take them to car shows. “I had all this memorabilia around the place as well, a lot of it in boxes. “I said to my wife that it had got to the point where I either sell it off or find somewhere where we can access the cars and put some of this stuff up. “Initially, it wasn’t to put out on display for people to see, it was just designed for personal use. “We started putting it together and we didn’t show anybody. It took us about two years to commission the place. The next viewing for the Lost in the 50s American Classic Car Museum will be on Sunday, August 30 from 9.30am. Admission is $15 for adults with children under 12 free. Viewing is by appointment only and must be made by calling 4955 2445 or by emailing glen@lostinthe50s.com.au - Paul Monforte
Olympian on board for Raymond Terrace fun run Two-time Australian Olympic steeplechase representative Youcef Abdi will be the star attraction at the Greater Raymond Terrace Fun Run on Sunday, September 6. Hunter locals are being encouraged to walk, run or push in support of brain cancer research for the event which is part of the statewide Greater RunNSW series. The day features two, four and eight-kilometre events for participants of all ages. The run has been able to return 4
for a second year courtesy of the sponsorship of the Greater Building Society and partnerships with Port Stephens Council and Raymond Terrace Athletics Club. Raymond Terrace Athletics Club chairperson David Holland said a number of stalls and kids’ amusements would add to a great morning out for the whole community, regardless of whether they were running. “The event will also raise funds for Cure Brain Cancer
Foundation,” Mr Holland said. “One of our young members is battling brain cancer, so this is an issue close to our hearts and that of others in the community.” Three of last year’s winners, Guy Walters (8km), Jai Holland (2km boys) and Kaitlyn Klein (2km girls) will again be in action. Early-bird entries are $20 for adults and $10 for children. For more information, visit raymondterracefunrun.com.au - Paul Monforte

Students given the view from the top hree students from the Hunter region gained an insight into the running of the NSW Department of Education when chosen to visit Sydney as
part of the statewide Secretary for a Day program. Andrew Gay and Ellie Bright from Lambton High School and Phoebe McIlwraith from Morisset
High, spent two days shadowing senior staff to experience the challenges associated with running a government department and to see how educational policy relates to schools. Twenty students from across the state were invited to participate based on applications which asked for details of previous leadership experience, personal qualities and areas of interest. Ellie, who spent time with the department’s director of employee performance and conduct, Jane Thorpe, said the program was a good opportunity to learn leadership and communication skills. “It was different to school in that you had to step it up a bit, because you were dealing with the real workforce,” she said. Andrew said he had enjoyed his time with Dr Michele Bruniges, secretary of the Department of Education. “It was really good. She is such an
important and busy woman,” he said. “She was always being pulled out to address the media and then had to go to parliament at the end of the day.” Lambton High School principal, Martin Rosser said the program was a highly prestigious opportunity for the students. “It’s a recognition of the leadership programs at the school and I’d recognise our leadership coordinator, Carolyn Hayden, for her work in that regard,” Mr Rosser said. “Andrew and Ellie have been able to demonstrate, at a school and regional level, their involvement in leadership programs,” he said. “They are well-respected by both staff and students at this school and, over a long period of time, have been involved in our student representative council. “We are going through our senior leadership- body process at the moment and both students have been recognised as part of that. - Paul Monforte

“It’s just learning on the run and they are shooting themselves in the foot a lot of times.” Injuries forced Buderus to hand debuts to winger Nathan Ross and second-rower Lachlan Fitzgibbon, who started from the bench. Knights prop Kade Snowden played only 12 minutes before being forced from the field with concussion. Earlier, the Knights’ under 20s team was defeated 48-18 by the Dragons. The young Knights are in equal-eighth position on 22 points. The NSW Cup team had a bye. The Knights face another stern test this weekend against the high-flying Sydney Roosters at Hunter Stadium on Sunday afternoon. First grade kick-off is at 4pm, preceded by the NSW Cup clash against the Illawarra Cutters at 11.45am and the under 20s at 1.45pm. - Paul Monforte

hile the scoreboard again indicated a heavy loss for the Knights, debut coach Danny Buderus preferred
The Knights trailed 12-0 early but recovered well to lead 20-14 at half-time before the Dragons again took the lead. The Knights trailed only 28-24 with 15 minutes remaining and went within centimetres of levelling the score when winger Jake Mamo lost contact with the ball after attempting to place it over the try line one-handed. Buderus said his side had stayed strong after falling behind early but the Dragons’ weight of possession in the second half told the story. “In the second half, you could see the guys sort of stuttering and their body language - you could see them sapping,” he said. “It’s disappointing when you see some mistakes from the boys and they are just killing themselves. “That’s a shame for all involved because you know how hard they are working to play well.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT
ELVIS IS IN THE BUILDING
hen it comes to royalty in the heady world of rock and roll – they don’t come much more regal than Elvis Presley. Some 37 years after his death, the cult of personality surrounding the king of rock and roll is as strong as ever. If there was one person who deserved the title of ‘King of Kings’ it would have to be Max Pellicano whose show, Elvis to The Max, is widely-regarded as one of the most scarily accurate portrayals of Presley on stage. Continuing his long-standing love affair with Australia, Pellicano
will be making his umpteenth trip Down Under. “I’ve been coming down to see you guys for so long now, Australia is kinda like a second home to me now,” told Newcastle Weekly. With early dreams of becoming a stage actor, Pellicano essentially fell into the Presley role while researching his mannerisms to play the part of Conrad Birdie in a stage production of Bye Bye Birdie. “I got a degree in dramatic arts and I started doing musicals and theatre,” Pellicano explained. "I was in a production of Bye Bye Birdie and I studied Jailhouse

Benjalu will make a rare local appearance in Newcastle next week.
Benjalu return for great cause hile they may’ve made the decision to spend a little time off the road in 2015 Newcastle-based roots rockers Benjalu will be playing their first local show for 2015 at Lizotte’s next week – and it’s all for a good cause. The boys have thrown their support behind the Ronald McDonald House charity for the gig which will see Benjalu and support act Karen Soper, raise much-needed funds for the wellknown children’s charity. “This year, we pretty much decided to do the opposite of what we had been doing and take a little break from touring as
much so we could spend this year concentrating on getting the debut album out,” frontman Ben ‘Gumby’ Gumbleton told Newcastle Weekly. “But, when this opportunity came along- it was kind of too good to pass up – Ronald McDonald House is a great charity that we’re all really passionate about – also it’s a great excuse for a local show. “Our normal stomping ground in Newcastle is the Cambridge so it will be good to play at Lizotte’s – we’re thinking it will be more of a stripped-back set with a few little surprises thrown in.” Benjalu – Lizotte’s Lambton – Thursday, August 13.

Anthony Hopkins’s celebrated directorial debut. Playing a man who wrestled with the psychological conflict between creative talent and selfdestructive impulse, Kingdom’s portrayal of his countryman is tangibly heartfelt and authentic – audiences have sworn it was the poet himself on stage. Handi Goat marsala.
Non-veg grilled platter for two.
GRAND PAVILION GETS TIKKA OF APPROVAL
Hot green sauce and sweet mint sauce served with pappadams.
Having already established themselves in two locations on the Central Coast, the Grand Pavilion, the newest entrant on the Warners Bay dining scene, could very well provide the best Indian in the region. hey may’ve only been open at their Warners Bay location for around two months, but the air of excitement upon arriving at the packed Grand Pavilion, was palpable. Introducing a fusion of Indian and Indo-Chinese cuisine, there really is something for every diner at the Grand Pavilion where true hospitality greets you at the door. Honestly, you will have to travel pretty far and wide to find such attentive, friendly service. From the moment we were seated there was a friendly smile from staff presenting an unexpected starter of pappadams with sweet mint sauce with a mild warmth and a beautifully balanced hot green sauce - spicy heat tempered with coriander, mint and some acid freshness. Next up was the entrée – the non-veg grilled platter for two. Comprised of traditional chicken tikka, gorgeous marinated lamb chops (lean tasty cutlets, warm mild heat from ginger, and fragrant fenugreek), seekh kebab made of the most delicate 16
minced lamb all straight from the tandoor and slightly smoky and some of the lightest, crispiest onion bhaji available anywhere in the region, this was one of the most flavorful and well-executed entrée’s I’ve experienced in recent memory. Main courses started with Malabar prawn with a coconut-based sauce laced with mustard seed that complimented a healthy portion of prawns so fresh they may have jumped out of the waters of Lake Macquarie. A southern Indian-style dish, this delicate curry could have been delivered straight from the tropical tranquility of Kerala on India’s Malabar Coast. This was a truly great dish to encourage even the most reluctant spice-eater to expand their palate. A brilliant surprise on the menu is a Handi goat marsala, so perfectly spiced with chilli, ginger and intense depth of flavour created by a well defined garam marsala - redolent and almost heady with toasted cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, cardomom, coriander seeds, and cumin. Rarely seen on menus
in this region, this lean protein, cooked slowly on the bone until it is mouth meltingly tender was an absolute star. Make sure to save room for dessert as well. It was a difficult decision to make for a gulab jamun fan but eventually settled on a mango kulfi (ice cream) that is sweet, and tastes exactly the way it smells - like summer. The pista kulfi (pistachio flavoured) was just as divine - sweet, nutty, slightly bitter and bright green. Either of these is a tasty way to finish off a meal, but together they both compliment and contrast with each other perfectly. Even if you display a passing fancy for Indian cuisine, the Grand Pavilion is an absolute ‘must-do’. Just make sure to book to avoid disappointment. Grand Pavilion – 452 The Esplanade, Warners Bay. COOKING FOR A CAUSE he cream of Australia’s culinary crop will descend on Newcastle, later this month in support of children’s charity Variety. Newcastle’s inaugural Variety of Chefs will see Peter Kuruvita (Flying Fish, Noosa Beach House), Timothy Montgomery (N ewcastle’s Restaurant Mason), Lesley Taylor (Newcastle’s Lesley Taylor Group) and Troy RhoadesBrown (Muse Dining, Pokolbin) will set up shop at Newcastle City Hall which will be transformed into an interactive kitchen stadium. Troy Rhoades-Brown from Muse Restaurant in Pokolbin, said that he jumped at the chance to support such a worthy charity. “When I was asked tor be a part of this, it was an absolute nobrainer for me,” Rhoades-Brown told Newcastle Weekly. “Variety is just such a fantastic cause to get behind – I mean, you’ve got to thank your lucky stars that yourself or our children aren’t in the same position as the people that Variety helps and this
is a great was of giving back to such a worthwhile charity.” The event, which forms part of Variety’s auspicious 40th anniversary celebrations, will see the four chefs prepare one course each, with each course matched with its own premium wine as well as lashings of entertainment, culinary games and live music. “I know the other three chefs who will be taking part, so it will be great to catch up with everyone, but they are also phenomenally talented chefs who will all be cooking in their own distinct style and there’ll also be a ton of food–related games, live music and lots of auction items. “Also, with all proceeds going to help sick, disadvantaged or special needs kids, it’s going to be a great night for a good cause.” Variety of Chefs Newcastle Newcastle City Hall - Saturday, August 29. Tickets are $165pp or $1,550 per table of 10 or $2,500 per corporate table. For more information and tickets, visit variety.org.au/newchefs. - Stephen Bisset

ORIX No 1 FOR QUALITY ONE OWNER CARS “simply the best”
August 7 – 13
PICK OF THE WEEK The Intouchables Saturday, SBS, 9pm, PG (2011) This charming French film, based on a true story, follows Philippe (François Cluzet, left), a middle-aged millionaire who is paralysed from the neck down. In search of a new carer, he takes a chance on Driss (Omar Sy), a hoodlum from the projects. Unsteadily, Driss settles into his new responsibility and soon his unorthodox but witty methods of care makes way for a strong bond between the two. The playful juxtaposition between the broken aristocrat and a man bred in a grittier world is touching.

Napoleon Dynamite
Monday, ONE, 9.30pm, AV15+ (2013) Ice-cold suspense, chilling subtlety and feelings unspoken wrap around this haunting tale from director Chan-wook Park (Oldboy). Soon after her 18th birthday, India Stoker (Mia Wasikowska, right) sits grieving at the funeral of her much-loved father (Dermot Mulroney). Her mother Eveyln (Nicole Kidman), unstable, selfobsessed and viper-like, remains stone-cold. When her uncle Charlie (Matthew Goode), whom she never knew existed, comes to live with the pair, India comes to suspect this overly charming man has ulterior motives for his sudden appearance.
Sunday, ELEVEN, 8.30pm, PG (2004) An instant cult classic was born when improbably named geek Napoleon Dynamite (Jon Heder, left) waltzed onto the screen in this high-school comedy which is pitched at the perfect level of quirkiness. The episodic plot finds Napoleon befriending a fellow outcast (Efren Ramirez) and orchestrating his school presidency campaign, awkwardly wooing a fellow student (Tina Majorino), and contenting with a home life under the same roof as his would-be ladies’ man brother (Aaron Ruell) and loopy uncle (Jon Gries).

During the past couple of years Chris has put himself out for others and done things for absolutely no gain and throughout the next 12 months providence will pay him back. He is due some positive karmic rewards and the next few months will help to bring that his way. Chris won’t have to make decisions alone, especially when it comes to far reaching choices, as the support he has given loved ones will be returned to him.
ARIES MAR 21 – APR 20
CANCER JUNE 22 – JULY 22
LIBRA SEP 24 – OCT 23
CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 20
Expect the unexpected on the home front. There will be surprise visitors, startling declarations from family members, sudden awkward situations or issues to play by ear, along with a few sparks you'll have to put out. Keep your cool and handle it all calmly and positively.
Everyone experiences tight finances every so often. This isn't a time to retreat into dreamland or to carry on with bad budgeting, so look at your monetary state carefully. You may find yourself caught in the strange situation of paying back a karmic debt, but even this soon passes.
Be careful of piling up the stress levels through overwork; be sensible and set yourself a practical schedule. Friends, colleagues and loved ones will be there to help if you allow them to be, so remember to delegate, especially when it comes to dealing with a huge task or project.
If you have to deal with tantrums and tears from a sibling or close friend, choose your words carefully. Let them know that you still care but in this particular situation there is nothing more you can do. An unusual domestic undertaking will keep you on your toes.
TAURUS APR 21 – MAY 21
LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23
SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 22
AQUARIUS JAN 21 – FEB 19
If there are tensions at home and at work, your best bet is to keep your head down and steer clear of any confrontational matters. A difficult conversation will need a sensitive touch; choose your words carefully when giving advice or dealing with problematic matters that suddenly surface.
Singles, an exciting romance could sweep you off your feet. Soothe any inner tensions to help harness your personal power. Rise above negativity with a contentious family issue or annoying domestic task and you'll see the most effective approach. It’s full steam ahead with a personal plan or enterprise.
Expanding your horizons on the job front will bring unusual tasks and challenges that test your resourcefulness and put you under the pump. Changes of scene, pace or routine will add colour and variety to your career. Opportunities for advancement are all around you so be open to them.
You might strongly wish to interfere in the life of a loved one and although your motives are good, it will be hard to accept that everyone has their own decisions to make and you may have to put up with something of which you disapprove.
GEMINI MAY 22 – JUNE 21
VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23
SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21
Other people’s business suddenly becomes your own; that's not to say you turn into a busybody overnight, it's just that they will turn to you for guidance. If there have been any family upsets, you have a perfect opportunity to smooth them over.
You are going to be very in tune with your own inner world and very aware of inhibitions and hurdles that restrict your freedom. However, your psychic insight will provide the necessary clues to overcome these obstacles.
Let caution be your watchword and don't let impatience rule your life. Financial wheeling and dealing and wading through official documents may become quite stressful. Keeping a calm overview and clear objectives will help you with decisions.
You might be feeling somewhat vulnerable. An important event for someone close will draw you in emotionally; there may be news of a pregnancy or birth in the family. You should take the opportunity to listen to music, read a romantic story or enjoy pampering yourself.
