This week...

04 06 08

From the editor Welcome to another edition of the Newcastle Weekly – we have some really great stories to share with you this week. For our cover story, we caught up with Rachel Prest, the brains behind Raid My Wardrobe - a great event that gives new life to pre-loved fashion and has been increasing in popularity since its inception five years ago. The next Raid My Wardrobe event will be on this weekend, so make sure you get along to grab those bargains. The RSPCA is also holding Cupcake Day next Monday, August 17- a fantastic and worthwhile way for the community to raise funds to help the RSPCA in rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming animals. While set for Monday next week, the good news is you have all of August to raise money for this worthy cause so turn to page 6 to find out how you can get baking. Speaking of worthy causes, Clubs NSW presented a cheque for $408,360 to an array of Hunter-based community and sporting groups and charities last week . It’s fantastic to see grass-roots organisations receiving such substantial support. Finally, in our My Favourite Things section, we chat to ABC Radio presenter and mental health advocate Craig Hamilton. - Paul Monforte

Event-goers on the hunt for a bargain at a previous Raid My Wardrobe.

Out with the old and in with the new s women, we have an obsession - classified in our own right as hoarders. Hoarders of fashion. One peek in any given closet and you are bound to find a flourish of designs that could have been around to see many a decade, and without a darn good reason to part, we wouldn’t even dream of it. Enter Raid My Wardrobe. Created by Newcastle mum Rachel Prest, the event, held three times a year, has created quite a following - being hyped as Newcastle’s biggest ‘preloved’ fashion event, where anyone can sell and purchase preloved or vintage clothing. “Basically, the idea came about because I had clothing in my wardrobe that I wasn’t wearing anymore and I had a change of life, so I thought ‘wouldn’t it be awesome if we had a big hall set up when people could come and buy each others’ clothes and such’, that’s how Raid My Wardrobe was born.” Ms Prest said. With Raid My Wardrobe having three markets a year; March, June and one in August, it features a vast array of fashion and accessories. The event is spread over 50 stalls and caters to a broad range of age groups. 4

“We’ve got around 50 stalls going at each event - sometimes it’s a couple of girlfriends who are both clearing out their wardrobes, so they collaborate to run a stall together. So it’s interesting when you wander around the stalls and see the range of different clothing,” “The first event we held had over 1000 in attendance. So it was huge! I was just blown away, but it encouraged me to keep going and realise its what women want. We love this sort of stuff, getting a bargain while also looking after the environment.” Raid My Wardrobe isn’t just a market though, having recently launched an online buy and sell website in March for customers to still enjoy the bargains all year round. “The website is for in between events, it caters to those who were unable to attend or for store holders that still wish to sell their items, so its kind of like an eBay style buy and sell website.” The event celebrates women of all shapes and sizes with everything from high-end designer clothes to classic vintage treasures. With such a broad range of fashion in sizes 6-26, nobody is going to leave empty handed.

Raid My Wardrobe’s Rachel Prest and Michelle Finch.

“At this up-coming event, we are really emphasising spring fashion and spring racing fashion, along with any occasion where you just need a new dress, so this includes weddings, parties, birthdays, and Christmas functions. We especially have a lot of cocktails dresses, as those are really only worn once or twice.” So, what happens to all those left over clothes you might ask? “ For each event we’ve had over the past five years, we have a nominated charity. At the end of an event, stallholders have the opportunity to donate what remains. We have been lucky enough to support charities and especially local ones,” Ms Prest said. Raid My Wardrobe will be held on August 16, at Newcastle Basketball Stadium. $5 entry fee, $25 VIP. For more information visit raidmywardrobe.com.au - Kayla Stephenson

he RSPCA is calling on bakers from across the Hunter to get into the kitchen and do their bit in the fight against animal cruelty - armed with nothing more than the humble cupcake. RSPCA Hunter Animal Care manager Debbie Jaggers told Newcastle Weekly that Cupcake Day, the organisation’s annual, national event was a fantastic way to raise awareness about the scourge of animal cruelty and one that makes a real-word difference to animals in need. “We are calling on all bakers, both young and old, to get into the kitchen to take up the fight against animal cruelty,” she said. “Aside from raising muchneeded funds – in the past, the event has raised $136,000 annually across Australia – Cupcake Day also highlights the great work being done at the RSPCA in caring for, rehabilitating and rehousing animals in need.” While the event is set down for

next Monday, August 17, bakers will have all month to get behind this worthy cause, with donations being accepted until the end of August. It’s up to you how you celebrate Cupcake Day. You could host a simple morning tea, sell cupcakes t your workplace or even host a bakeoff for the undisputed cupcake champion of the office. The most important element tis fun. “I would encourage people to get out there and host a cupcake party at their school or workplace,” Dr Jaggers said. “Also, people have the whole month to organise something and host kits are available via the Cupcake Day website as well as lots of tasty cupcake recipes to get you started.” Cupcake Day for the RSPCA will be on Monday, August 17. Clubs NSW dig deep for Hunter-based community groups. Photo: Kayla Stephenson

On-going support for local organisations ach year through ClubGRANTS, clubs across NSW provide support to local community organisations, sporting groups, and charities that make a difference in their local area. With more than $1 billion in funding provided since the program’s launch, ClubGRANTS is, without a doubt, one of the largest and most beneficial grant programs available in Australia. An official ceremony was held, last week, to present the recipients with their grants which, as a total, reached $408 360. The event saw club representatives gathering to recognise and celebrate the tireless work and outstanding support these smaller organisations carry out within the local community. “ClubGRANTS is a scheme which has been devised by the state government where we, as larger registered club, have 1.5% of our gaming duty earmarked which allows for us to be able to contribute funds to better smaller organisations,” Zoran Ilievski, from Belmont 16s, said. “l think, last year, the allocated combined funding reached around $320,000 so it’s significantly more money being located this year which is just terrific. Even though we have

a legal obligation of donating a certain amount to the cause, I do find that you’ll see a lot of clubs going a step further and donating more as we all wish to see those organisations funded.” One of this year’s recipients was the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, whose tireless efforts have exceptionally benefited the lives of countless novacastrians, as well as throughout Australia and New Zealand. Through the help of ClubGRANTS, the organisation will be able to provide new equipment for paramedics and doctors who are located on the home base. “The grant, this year, is for the purchase of helmets, equipment, and night vision goggles for our doctors and paramedics. The total cost for this was around $75 000, so all we ask is for a small amount from the clubs and through this grant and other support and sponsors we can afford to supply what’s needed,” manager, Melina Hartnett said. “It’s always good to be here, be able to see the other charities and the clubs supporting small charities that struggle to raise money themselves - so it does go a long way in supporting the community.” - Kayla Stephenson

It’s a red letter year for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service

It’s a case of time flying when you’re having fun for Jebediah. Photo: Matt Saville.

THE JEBS' TWENTY YEARS OF ODD WAYS After wowing metro crowds with a string of bravura anniversary shows, indie rock heroes Jebediah are keeping the ball rolling into regional centres. Good news, Newcastle. hile it might be difficult to believe, for those of us who spent their teens or twenties in the halcyon days of the late 1990s, that Perth indie rock wunderkinds, Jebediah, are now 20-years-old but they’re showing no signs of slowing down as Newcastle fans re sure to discover when they hit town later this month. Following on from a great crowd-pleasing,

sold-out metropolitan run to celebrate the auspicious milestone and the release of the two-disc compilation album Twenty, “the Jebs”, as they have become affectionately known will be doffing their cap to their throngs of fans in regional centres around Australia. “Each show has been an absolute blast, and I’d say that we’re probably putting more into the shows now that we ever have before,” guitarist

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

Chris Daymond told Newcastle Weekly. “The last time we were in Newcastle, which was quite a while ago now, we had such a bloody good time, that we wanted to come back and do it all again.” It seems the Jebs will be pulling out all the stops for this show as well, with the four-piece offering up two sets – the first comprising of their hits and a few surprises thrown in, while the second will be taken up with their 1997 debut record Slightly Odway in its entirety. Featuring such indie rock stalwarts as Leaving Home, Harpoon, Jerks of Attention, Slightly Odway – with its beguiling mix of Archers Of Loaf-esque angular guitar lines and a finely tuned pop sensibility, propelled Jebediah to the forefront of the late 90’s Oz indie rock explosion alongside the likes of You Am I, Spiderbait and Grinspoon. While subsequent albums such as Of Someday Shambles, Braxton Hicks and Jebediah may’ve eclipsed Slightly Odway artistically, the debut still holds a lot of water for Jebs fans – a fact that Daymond has no problem with. “We were so young when we made that record and we’ve done a lot of growing up since, but we are really proud of what we accomplished on it,” he said. “We spent a lot of time on the road meeting fans and they often say they remember that record so fondly because it came out during a particular time in their lives so there is obviously that nostalgia element to it, and that’s okay. For us, as a band, it’s more about reminding ourselves how bloody lucky we are to still be out there playing and how pivotal the fans are in all of that.” Twenty years on and Daymond said the band was having as much fun as ever and while, it may take a little extra effort these days, it’s still definitely worth it. “As the years go on, it’s not as simple as getting onstage and jumping around, like you can do in your twenties – there’s a lot more blood, sweat and tears that go into it these days,” Daymond laughed. “But, as I said, we’re having an absolute blast and if you’re having this much fun it makes it all worthwhile.” Jebediah – Cambridge Hotel, Friday, August 28. Tickets available from jebediah.net, bigtix. com.au or the cambridgehotel.com.au - Stephen Bisset 11

The INXS flag will fly high at Belmont 16s next weekend.

THIS OUTFIT IS HEAVEN SENT teeth on drums before venturing to the front of the stage, said that Hutchence and INXS were a big inspiration in his formative years. “I’m 46 now and I’ve been a fan since I was 14 or 15,” he said. “I was a drummer for a long time before I started singing but it was Michael Hutchence that inspired me to want to perform in the first place - he was a huge influence on me becoming a musician.” “The songs are just so timeless and, especially their earlier stuff, so Australiansounding. There aren’t too many singers in Australia who are as charismatic as Michael Hutchence and while I try to sound like him and stuff, this show isn’t about just impersonating, it’s about capturing the vibe of the band onstage.” Original Sin INXS Show – Belmont 16s – Saturday, August 22. - Stephen Bisset

ot on the heels of two mammoth shows in this neck of the woods earlier this year, arguably Australia’s best INXS tribute act, Original Sin, will be making a triumphant return to the region with a show at Belmont 16s next weekend. Glen Campbell, who takes on the role of iconic frontman Michael Hutchence, told Newcastle Weekly that punters could expect an all-killer-nofiller set of hits from one of the most seminal bands in Aussie music history. “We had such a great run up that way earlier in the year that we thought we’d ome back and do it all again,” he said. “It’s basically a two-hour show and we try and cover most of the band’s biggest hits, of which there are a few, but we also throw in a few obscure album tracks for the die-hard fans that maybe the band rarely or never played live.” Campbell, who cut his musical

The spirit of Freddie Mercury will come alive in Newcastle later this month.

THEY WILL ROCK YOU here’s no denying that, when it comes to true rock and roll behemoths and charismatic frontmen, iconic rockers Queen and their inimitable frontman Freddie Mercury would have to come pretty close to taking the cake. While it may’ve been almost 25 years since Mercury’s passing, his commanding presence and almost unparalleled musical genius still resonates with audiences around the globe. If you were unable to see Queen live, with Mercury in full flight well, never fear, because one of the best Queen tributes on the circuit today, the Brisbane-based Killer Queen Experience, are headed our way for two massive shows later this month. John Blunt, who takes on the role of the mercurial frontman, told Newcastle Weekly that punters could expect nothing short of a full tilt rock and roll spectacle. “I just adore Newcastle – a great town and a brilliant Queen fanbase,” he said. “Quite simply, for people who haven’t seen us before, we are there to create a damn good party – we’re not about playing obscure B-sides

and rarities, this show is two hours of Queen hit after Queen hit – we want people whooping it up the whole time.” Since 2010, Killer Queen have been taking the sprit of the iconic British rockers to such far flung places as Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Singapore, Norway and, of course, Australia. Further, such is Blunt’s resemblance to Mercury, he appreared on the French lookalike television show Qui Sera Le Meilleur Sosie in front of seven million people. If there was anyone who had a handle on why Queen’s music still resonates, it would have to be John Blunt. “The music is just timeless and so far ahead of its time,” he said. “Apart from that, it’s just so well orchestrated and adventurous – I mean they were never just a ‘one-sound’ band – they did rock, power ballads and even opera. They were true originals that I don’t think the world has seen the likes of since.” Killer Queen Experience - Friday, August 28, Edgeworth Sport and Rec and Saturday, August 29, Stockton Bowling Club. - Stephen Bisset

FILM REVIEW: MISSION IMPOSSIBLE - ROGUE NATION

Tom Cruise sizzles in the latest Mission Impossible flick.

Film Review: Trainwreck A train wreck unto itself, buried amongst the chaotic, brutally honest and unselfconscious brashness, for the briefest moment you can almost see a glimmer of a decent movie. Wait, no you can’t. Sometimes poor taste is just poor taste, no matter how high the morning-after heels. Indoctrinated by her serial womanising father (Colin Quinn) into believing “monogamy is not

than Hunt is back in this the fifth instalment in the Mission Impossible franchise behemoth and, at 53 years of age, Tom Cruise proves that he still has the chops to carry a big budget action blockbuster – and then some. The actions of the IMF (Impossible Mission Force) in previous instalments have made them ‘organisation non grata’ with the US government and CIA head Alan Huntley (Alec Baldwin) wants the IMF disbanded and incorporated into the CIA. This comes the worst possible time as Ethan is ridiculously close to exposing the identities of bad guys The Syndicate and thus

begins arguably Hunts most impossible mission ever, globetrotting from Vienna to London and many points in between staying one step ahead of the CIA and The Syndicate’s nefarious leader Solomon Lane. Story aside, this franchise made its bones producing some truly jaw-dropping set pieces and this instalment is no different. There are more thrills, spills, explosions and ‘big bangery’ than you can poke a stick at. Verdict: Fans of the franchise will love this latest outing. 3/5 - Stephen Bisset

a realistic”, Amy (Amy Schumer) is a careerdriven writer for the low-brow S’nuff magazine with a fondness for drinking, sex and all forms of inappropriateness. Desperate to impress her merciless editor-in-chief (Tilda Swinton), Amy begrudgingly takes on a profile article about a highly-respected sports medico to the stars, Aaron (Bill Hader). Quickly finding herself in uncharted territory of genuine ‘feelings’.

Schumer's delivery of her own writing is spot on while Hader is left to do his best with an underdeveloped character. The verdict: To some, this film is political incorrectness at its best, with all shades of endearing wit that only Judd Apatow’s brand of rom-com can produce. Sadly, much like his 2012 offering of This is 40, I’m not one of those people. 1.5 stars. - Joanna Baker

time out - meet the artist DAMIEN SLEVIN What inspires you? This is a big question. I am always looking at art, as much as I can, to keep one's juices flowing. I like all types of art, even styles which are quite contrary to my own. I like seeing the bounds of art pushed, a new take, a new idea, a new look but overall the aesthetic is very important for me. It still has to strike a chord visually regardless of the message. What has been your greatest achievement? Artistically, my greatest achievement has been my work in animated short film. The process is so lengthy and multi-faceted that it brings a level of satisfaction that is different from anything else – a very slow burn sense of well-earned achievement. My animated shorts have also been my greatest artistic success screening at more than 100

When did you first know you wanted to be a professional artist? I have always loved the idea of being able to do art for a living, but it is a difficult pursuit to say the least. I have been lucky enough to break through at certain levels in a professional capacity but, like most artists working today, I have a regular job to supplement the dream of being a full-time professional artist. Describe your work. With regards to painting, I would say that I am largely an urban landscape painter. I always try to reveal a moment in time – an interaction in a certain time and place, the capturing of a mood or an atmosphere or a fleeting play of light that was worthy of recording. For me, the style that suits this approach is an impressionistic style.

A TUSCAN DUO

Recipes and images from My Tuscan Kitchen by Sunshine Manitto $30, published by New Holland Publishers.

“PEPOSO” OR TUSCAN PEPPERY BEEF STEW SERVES 5 INGREDIENTS 1.5kg stewing beef 10 cloves unpeeled garlic 2 generous handfuls black peppercorns 50g tomato puree 1 litre red wine

METHOD Cut the beef into 3cm chunks. Put it in a large saucepan with the garlic gloves, peppercorns, concentrated tomato puree and the wine. Cover and cook on a very low heat,

simmering very gently for about 3 hours. You don’t need stock, nor oil, nor salt. When cooked to perfection, the beef should be as soft as butter. This slow-cooking technique really brings out the delicious taste of the meat and the black pepper. If the sauce is a bit liquid when the meat is cooked, roll a knob of butter in some plain flour and stir into the peposo to make it creamy. Serve piping hot in earthenware bowls with slices of garlic-rubbed, toasted homemade bread on the side, and wash it all down with an excellent Chianti wine.

CLASSIC TIRAMISU SERVES 10 INGREDIENTS

METHOD

500g marscapone

Make the coffee – half espresso and half filter coffee. When it has cooled, add a tablespoon of sugar and Marsala wine and stir until the sugar dissolves . Separate the egg whites and yolks into two glass bowls. Add 10 generous spoons of sugar to the yolks and whisk until smooth. Add the marscapone cheese and stir again until there are no visible lumps of marscapone. Whisk the egg whites until they form stiff peaks and then fold them into the egg and marscapone mix – always folding from low to high at a steady pace so as not to knock the air out of the egg whites. When everything is combined into a smooth cream, you are ready

turn to page 20 to win a copy of My Tuscan Kitchen to assemble the tiramisu. You can make it in a baking dish, in individual ramekins, in glasses or whatever type of container you like. Dip a Savoiardi biscuit in the cold coffee for 3 seconds and then pull it out. Make a layer of coffee-dipped biscuits, cover it with half the marscapone cream, then make a second layer of biscuits and finish with a layer of marscapone cream. Sprinkle with organic cocoa powder and optional plain chocolate chips to garnish. Refrigerate for at least 4 or 5 hours. Tiramisu is also very good the day after it is made, so it can be convenient to prepare the day before you need it.

Breast Chunks min. 2kg Café Camilo’s - a welcome addition to the Hamilton ‘eat scene’.

ucked away on Tudor Street, away from the gastronomic hustle and bustle of Hamilton’s Beaumont Street sits Café Camilo’s – one of the most refreshingly unpretentious eateries this reviewer has had the pleasure of experiencing for quite some time. “We do not own this business – it belongs to our customers,” owner Camilo Fernandez told Newcastle Weekly and, as soon as you set foot inside, it becomes pretty obvious that friendly service and honest, home-style cooking is the order of the day. Arriving to sample Camilo’s coffee and cake, I was pleasantly surprised to find that all cakes and desserts are prepared in-house and the three that I was lucky enough to sample were out of this world. First up was the tiramisu which was a remarkable representation of this classic dessert. The airiness of this confection – helped in no small part by a deliciously light marscapone cream, was both unexpected and exceptional. Speaking of classic desserts, next up was the iconic Turkish treat, baklava, and the Camilo’s verion was morish to say the

least. Layer upon layer of flaky, syrup-soaked, yet crispy filo pasty encased a thick and beautifullyspiced filling, making this dessert a masterclass in balancing textures and flavours. At risk of exploding, I was then presented with a house special – the caramisu – Camilo’s take on the aforementioned tiramusu. Even lighter that the traditional and with a rich, yet not too sweet caramel flavour, was a great update on a classic. To top it all off, these heady morsels were washed down with a rich, and smooth cappuccino. Made with Primo free trade beans, this was a full-flavoured and heady brew that provided the perfect accompaniment to these sweet treats. While they are a definite ‘go-to’ when it comes to coffee and cake, Camilo’s also offers and array of delectable lunch options and the introduction the increasingly popular of Spanish nights are sure to put this unpretentious little eatery at the top of even the most cynical gastrophile’s ‘hit list’. THE MEAT SHED IS GROWING!

hen thinking of the sundrenched landscape of Tuscany, in the heart of central Italy, it’s pretty hard for a cuisine steeped in peasant traditions not to come to mind. weekend escape

After a long week at work, everyone looks forward to those two wonderful days that you can spend catching up with friends, or going on a weekend getaway. The weekend is a time for relaxed looks. Ditch those blazers and pencil skirts and, instead, opt for jeans and long, flowing dresses. No matter where your adventures take you, it's always good to have a planned packing list and, with weather as unpredictable as this, it's best to cover all your bases. PICK OF THE WEEK The Amazing Spider-Man Saturday, PRIME7, 7pm, PG (2012) Aside from some intrigue surrounding our hero’s past, director Marc Webb’s contribution to the Spider-Man franchise sticks to the recently tested formula: nerdy kid develops superpowers, hooks up with his crush, battles a super villain. The Amazing Spider-Man is rescued from predictability, however, by Andrew Garfield’s exceptional Peter Parker: twitchy, assertive and convincingly angsty, his chemistry with Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacey (both above) is palpable.

I Give It A Year

Elysium

Saturday, 7TWO, 8.30pm, M (2013) Starring Aussies Rose Byrne (Bridesmaids) and Simon Baker (The Mentalist), along with Anna Faris, Stephen Merchant and Minnie Driver, this anti romcom is a star-studded affair – it’s a shame that writer/director Dan Mazer, who has tickled our funny bones with Bruno and Borat, couldn’t keep the laughs going for more than six months. The premise is fresh as we meet Nat (Byrne) and Josh (Rafe Spall) who have met and married in a whirlwind romance. Initially raw and hilarious, the story loses steam when Mazer can’t resist the Hollywood clichés.

Sunday, 7MATE, 8.30pm, M (2013) Behind the weapons, gadgets, violence and space age travel is a story that may seem ripped straight from the headlines. In 2154, the rich live on man-made space station Elysium, while the rest are made to struggle on a ruined Earth below. Senator Delacourt (Jodie Foster, above) keeps a strict anti-immigration stance, while Max (Matt Damon), who transports medical equipment made on Earth for the use of those on Elysium, gets caught up in an almighty mess when he can’t ignore his conscience any longer.

WITH FRANCIS BEVAN

Jennifer is more vulnerable and mysterious than she lets on and whilst she can sublimate her feelings through work and romance, she is not really satisfied with anything less than an intense, meaningful kind of love – and that is exactly what she is going to experience throughout the next 12 months. Financially and career wise, the planet Jupiter will benefit her work, objectives, ambitions and even her dreams through to September 2016.

ARIES MAR 21 – APR 20

CANCER JUNE 22 – JULY 22

LIBRA SEP 24 – OCT 23

CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 20

The New Moon on the 14th indicates that a romantic turn of events could be a wonderful surprise and a long-awaited get together will be a walk down memory lane. Certain individuals will be making their feelings about you rather obvious; remember some people are jealous of those they admire.

The New Moon on 14 August is the ideal time to put a new strategy into place financially and to discuss sensible budgetary measures with your other half or business partner. Remember that a problem shared is a problem halved. Turn your mind to growing your bank balance.

The New Moon on the 14th indicates that if you want to make new friends or find a new love interest, this is the ideal time to get out and about. Good news will point the way with a matter that has been up in the air. A friend or relative might throw you into a spin.

TAURUS APR 21 – MAY 21

LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23

SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 22

The New Moon on the 14th is the ideal time to sort out your fiscal state for the greatest advantage. Spendthrift tendencies may require corrective measures. Some may receive a windfall, while others will benefit from a payout of some kind; perhaps an investment, insurance or endowment policy has matured.

The New Moon on the 14th indicates new ideas and a novel approach to old problems at work will ensure their resolution. A fortuitous turn of events will settle a financial matter and help to put more money in your pocket. This is an ideal time to invest in property.

The New Moon on 14 August is highlighting your direction in life. Your worldly progress will be your absolute priority; you need to think clearly, set goals and then go all out to achieve them. Don't allow those who are jealous of your success to put obstacles in your way.

VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23

SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21

The 14 August New Moon indicates that you could be drawn into a discussion of the paranormal and be intrigued by a book or film that explores the unknown. You’re aware of obstacles that restrict your freedom but your intuition will provide the necessary clues to overcome them.

The 14 August New Moon is a good time to sign agreements or to make a business deal. It might be a good idea to soak up any extra energy by getting involved in sport. Keeping a calm overview and clear objectives will help you with decisions.

The 14 August New Moon indicates that a special get together with someone from your past will be an emotional affair. There'll be joyful high points, subtle unspoken issues to overcome and that you'll be focused on building bridges with others. Steer clear of any confrontational matters.

GEMINI MAY 22 – JUNE 21 The New Moon on the 14th has you all revved up about money matters, spending too much, unexpected costs, plus opportunities to earn more, so set clear priorities to ensure you make your best choice. You could have rather a lot on your plate.

AQUARIUS JAN 21 – FEB 19 The 14 August New Moon falls in your partnership zone. You might meet someone who has a profound influence on your life. This could be the start of a productive working alliance or a loving partnership. If you’re happily settled, there will be lucky news for you and your partner.

PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20 The New Moon on the 14th indicates that there could be good news about your job or you could receive the recognition that you’ve been working for and there will be more money on the way via your job. You have the promise of high achievement coming up.

PLASTERING & GYPROCK

BOOKS “I particularly like biographies. I like reading people’s stories. I’m interested in the human condition and experiences and how events have affected people’s lives. I also like books that challenge me, not necessarily a biography. I read a lot more than I used to and on a wide range of subjects.”

My favourite things BEACHES “I like the walk up to and around Strzelecki Lookout, which I start from in front of Merewether Surf Club, all the way up to Bar Beach, up to the top of Strzelecki, down the other side to King Edward Park to Newcastle Ocean Baths. I then turn around and walk back. I love that walk, it’s nine-and-a-half kilometres and I do it without an iPod in my ear - I turn my phone off and just clear my head. All I’m doing is watching the beautiful coastline and just listening to the natural noises. I always feel better after doing that.”

COFFEE “I suppose it’s become a ritual for me to start the day with a cup of coffee. I’m quite fussy about my coffee. There would be about four places in Newcastle - I’m not going to name them because you always end up upsetting someone, that I consider the best because they are consistent. I put a line through instant coffee a decade ago – I just do not drink it. If I go somewhere to get a coffee and it’s below-par, I’m sorry, I’m not coming back. I’m ruthless! I enjoy the social side of coffee and I think Newcastle has much more of a coffee scene now than it did, say, 15 years ago.”

Craig Hamilton ABC RADIO PRESENTER, MENTAL HEALTH ADVOCATE

Craig Hamilton has been a familiar voice on ABC Radio, both locally and nationally, since 1994 as part of the Grandstand rugby league commentary team. In recent years, Craig has also gained recognition as a passionate advocate for mental health and has become a much sought-after motivational speaker. He is the author of two books, Broken Open and A Better Life, which deal with his own battle with mental illness and provide hope and inspiration to others. Craig’s website craig-hamilton.com provides an insight to the man behind the microphone.. - Paul Monforte

LIVE MUSIC “I like going to the big shows. I saw the Rolling Stones twice last year. They were on my alltime bucket list. I got a chance to go to Adelaide for their opening show and I was not disappointed. They were better than I expected. There were around 55,000 people at Adelaide Oval and it was spectacular.”

PUBLIC SPEAKING “I love the public speaking I’m doing at the moment. I couldn’t do it if I didn’t love it. I’m doing a lot more than I used to, within reason. I’m conscious of how much I do, but I haven’t tired of it.”
