This week... From the editor Welcome to yet another fantastic edition of Newcastle Weekly. This week, we sit down with Knights captain Kurt Gidley who will be leaving Newcastle at the end of the season to play with Warrington in the UK. Turn to page three to find out just how much Newcastle has meant to Gidley throughout his tenure with the Knights. Good luck, Kurt. We wish you all the best. It’s often said that when it comes to big hearts, Novocastrians sit pretty close to the top of the tree. We found out just how much, this week, with the Greater Charitable Foundation awarding $800,000 in new funding to six worthy organisations including the Starlight Children’s Foundation, Autism Spectrum Australia, the Cerebral Palsy Alliance and the Raise Foundation. It’s fantastic to see such worthwhile causes receiving a much-needed boost. Speaking of giving back, we also caught up with former Screaming Jets drummer Craig ‘Rosie’ Rosevear and his training partner Adam Sherman who are gearing up to undertake a 500-kilometre bike ride to raise money for Ronald McDonald House. Turn to page six to find out how you can get behind this worthy cause. There are also plenty of competitions to sink your teeth into this week so, get those entries in. - Paul Monforte

It will be the end of an era for Kurt Gidley next weekend. Photo: Getty Images
Gidley bids a fond farewell to Hunter Stadium hen the Newcastle Knights run onto the pitch at Hunter Stadium for their penultimate game of the 2015 season against the Bulldogs next weekend, it will be the end of an era. After well over 200 games, the round 25 clash will be the last time that captain Kurt Gidley plays on home soil, with his tenure at the club drawing to a close after he signed a 1-year deal to play for Warrington in the UK. Gidley told Newcastle Weekly that he hoped his last outing on home soil would be an enjoyable affair. “It won’t be bittersweet – it’ll be enjoyable,” he said. “That’s what I want it to be – an enjoyable day that’s a celebration and a proud day. I’ve represented the club for such a long period and been able to play in front of my home fans and my family my whole life.” Gidley added that while the decision to move to the UK represented the next logical phase in his playing career, it was a decision that was not without a degree of emotion. “No, it wasn’t difficult, not at the time,” he said. “I’ve played 15 seasons in 1st grade for the Knights and it was time to move on and let the next group of young guys come through and show their skills and be passionate about the
team. It was an emotional one at the time, but one I’ve always been content with.” “I love playing in a team sport I love rugby league and my teammates are the most important thing about playing footy. So, it was always going to be tough telling those guys but I got through it not too bad and, I guess, the last part will be finishing the final game which might be a bit more emotional.” There’s little denying that Gidley’s career has been one peppered with highlights, at both club, and representative level. While taking over the captaincy of the Knights in 2008, being named as NSW State of Origin captain and making 12 appearances in the green and gold are sure to be up there, Gidley said he was reluctant to pick out a particular favourite. “There’s been moments during my career that certainly stand out – different plays and memorable wins, whether they be golden point wins or after the siren, or just tough games that we’ve won,” he said. “The home semi-final, early in my career was a memorable one against Manly – I’ll always remember that but there’s just been too many to single one out.” While 2015 hasn’t been the most outstanding season for the Knights, Gidley said that he believed he was leaving the team in good stead
for the future. “I’m a big fan of some of the guys coming through and some of the guys who have been signed for the future – players like Dane Gagai, Jake Mamo, the Mata’utia boys and the Sims boys,” he said. “I’m excited to see what the next generation has to offer.” Given that, by the time this season draws to a close, he will be the third most capped Knight behind Andrew Johns and Danny Buderus, there’s no denying that his name will be writ large in the annals of Newcastle Knights folklore, but, given the chance, how would Gidley like to be remembered by the club faithful? “As someone who always had a go for his teammates and the fans – someone who, hopefully, influenced other players around me to play better,” he said. “The club motto when I walked through the juniors was ‘be the player that other players want to play with’ and that’s how I’ve tried to play my game. “I’ve always wanted my teammates to respect me at the end of each game for the way I played.” The Knights take on the Bulldogs at Hunter Stadium on Saturday, August 29. - Stephen Bisset 3

Technology answers cancer questions n Australian-first app, which helps take some of the fear and helplessness out of living with cancer, was launched in Newcastle last week. The free app – Kids Guide To
Cancer – was developed by Camp Quality’s Hunter team with the idea of addressing the lack of age-appropriate information about cancer for the 10,000 Australian kids under 13 who will have a
parent diagnosed with cancer this year alone. The custom-built app will help reduce fear that children often feel when someone they know has cancer by giving them a simple, interactive and easy-tounderstand resource. “The app will help to guide kids through their role as a friend, child or sibling to someone living with cancer, using interactive characters and videos to build empathy for a patient’s experience and help them understand each trype of cancer,” Camp Quality’s family and hospital support coordinator, Cara Dahl, said. “We’ve already received feedback from parents who value the app as a simple source of comprehensive information compared to what can otherwise
be a confronting experience when someone in the family is diagnosed with cancer.” The app was made possible thanks to a $100,000 grant from the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation and chairman, Michael Slater, said the app was an innovative use of technology to support young people and their families throughout the Hunter region. “It’s an exciting development for families in regional areas experiencing cancer, because it breaks down barriers to help children understand what they, their friend or family member will endure through diagnosis, treatment and, hopefully, recovery,” he said. The Camp Quality Kids’ Guide to Cancer app is available via the Google Play Store.

Fred Hollows’ legacy lives on through todays youth red Hollows Humanity Award is being held in New South Wales for the first time and, so far, two young people from the Lake Macquarie region have been nominated.
The award recognises Year 6 students who follow in Fred Hollows’ footsteps by showing care and compassion for others. Elisa Johnston and Charli Vale from St Mary’s Primary School
in Warners Bay have both shown generosity and compassion well beyond their years. Elisa Johnston was nominated by Tracy Connolly, the mother of her kindergarten buddy Asha. Asha was diagnosed at a young age with a brain tumor and Elisa has been patient and understanding while caring for Asha. “I was nominated by Tracy, because I help Asha a lot at school and I’m a part of Asha’s life,” Elisa said. “At school, we do a lot of buddy activities - we read books and colour in, but I also help Asha with the bus and at lunch time.” The winners of the awards in NSW and ACT will have the opportunity to become junior ambassadors for the Fred Hollows Foundation and extend their humanity to the world by allocating $2500 to a Fred
Hollows Foundation program of their choice. “The award was published in the newsletter and it only took one look for me to know I was going to nominate Elisa,” Mrs Connolly said. “Asha has had a hard struggle to keep up, and Elisa goes looking for her when she is upset, which has been a bit of a saviour for us, knowing that she’s there at lunch time and able to help out.” Fellow nominee Charli Vale was nominated for the award by her teacher. Charli cut her long hair to raise funds for ovarian cancer research in memory of her grandmother who passed away from the disease. Her cut hair was used to make a wig for a child with alopecia. House charity. Former drummer of the Screaming Jets and Principal of Rosie’s School of Rock, Craig “Rosie” Rosevear will be one of the riders participating in the 500-kilometre cross-country event. “It’s a great opportunity to show your support for a really good cause with a bunch of mates, I think,” Mr Rosevear told Newcastle Weekly. “It’s been great for the kids here at School of Rock, because I get to explain it is to raise funds for Ronald McDonald house, so the kids who sort of don’t know what it’s all about can learn and hopefully help raise funds and awareness”. Adam Sherman, a Ride for Sick Kids veteran, will be participating alongside Mr Rosevear in his 11th event to date. “It’s well supported with a really good bunch of people, from all walks of life. It’s great to have Rosie along, being so full of life, as well
as Rob and Brett Hadley being involved, and those guys are really good cyclists and known Australiawide - they not only help raise funds, they participate and sponsor it, so we are really lucky,” Mr Sherman said. “You’d be surprised at how many kids have either stayed in a Ronald McDonald house or know of someone who has”. The cyclists will make time to stop in at schools along the way and have a talk with the students about what Ronald McDonald House does, as well as give a bike safety talk. The kids at Rosie’s School of Rock will also be out and about raising funds for the cause through unplugged gigs, busking and a battle of the bands competition. $800,000 to improve the lives of Hunter families ix charities, and the people they help, have benefitted from more than $800,000 in new funding from the Hunter-based Greater Charitable Foundation. The Foundation aims to partner with a small number of organisations at a time to ensure the programs are
well resourced and supported, and to enable comprehensive measurement of program effectiveness and meaningful outcomes. “The Foundation was established in 2011 and its all about providing support to help improve people’s lives. We describe it as improving
life outcomes. Basically, we fund practical, tangible projects that are about changing and improving peoples lives,” CEO of the Greater Charitable Foundation, Anne Long said. Some of the charities who were granted funding from the Foundation included: • Camp Quality, who was granted $128,000 for its Child Life Therapy Program at Newcastle’s John Hunter Children’s Hospital • Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect), who received $320,000 to operate its Early Intervention Readiness Program, for families of children newly diagnosed with autism • Cerebral Palsy Alliance, who received another $98,500 to deliver its mentoring programs for teenagers and young adults with
cerebral palsy in the Hunter and Central Coast regions • Starlight Children’s Foundation who will use $110,000 to continue the diversional therapy program visits in eight hospitals around the Hunter (Maitland and John Hunter), North Coast, New England Central Coast and Gold Coast. “I certainly think funding is becoming far more difficult to obtain for many not-for-profits, so, foundations such as ours are really important as we are able to help them to get a new project of the ground, as well as to provide funding for an existing program that requires additional support. “I think we have a really important role in the local charities and, more broadly, in a regional, rural sense as well,” Ms Long said. - Kayla Stephenson

Russel Morris is back in town for two special shows.
EVEN BETTER THAN THE REAL THING
Having hit musical paydirt with his two, career-best records, Sharkmouth and Van Diemen’s Land, released in 2012 and 2014 respectively, Russell Morris is certainly showing no signs of slowing down. orris has stayed on the road, pretty much since the release of Van Diemen’s Land and he will be hitting our region for two shows later this month. The songwriter told Newcastle Weekly that the Hunter will always have a special place in his heart. “I’m sure a lot of artists will tell you that they love coming to whatever town for whatever
reason, but in my case – it’s definitely true of the Newcastle region,” he said. “It’s always been such a great music town and even in my darkest days I always seemed to be able to pull a decent crowd in Newcastle. You guys kept me going.” The success of both Sharkmouth and Van Diemen’s Land (hitting number six and number

four on the ARIA charts respectively), has come as a welcome surprise to The Real Thing singer, given the distinctive blues vibe and expansive themes contained within. “It certainly has been something that has been really surprising,” he said. “Basically, I just wanted to do a blues record and pretty much everyone I knew tried to talk me out of it, but it was just something that I felt that I had to do.” With Sharkmouth dealing with historical Australian urban-scapes and the colourful characters that inhabited them and Van Diemen’s Land focusing on the ‘big picture’ stories that helped shape our national identity, Morris said the third in the trilogy would take aim directly at the heart of Australia. “I’m actually in the mixing phase for the next one now so we’re hoping to have it out by October,” he said. “Thematically, I wanted to look more at the history of this country and you can’t do that properly without looking at Indigenous cultures, their cultural heroes and the invasion of Australia. “Musically, it’s intended to be reflective of the middle of this country, so it is very stripped back – I think the most instrumentation we’ve got on a track is five instruments. “It’s coming together really well and I can’t wait for people to hear it.” Russell Morris – Cessnock Leagues Club – Friday, August 28 and Belmont 16s – Saturday, August 29. - Stephen Bisset

time out ROCK AND ROLL WARRIORS ver had dreams of worldbeating rock and roll stardom? Were you once a burgeoning rock God until the minutiae of life got in the way, forcing you to slide the axe under the bed in favour of a 9-5? Well, never fear, because a new program, which will run at Muso’s Corner from next month, will help you recapture those rock and roll fantasies. Weekend Warriors, an American concept brought to Oz by the Australian Music Association, enables the lapsed muso to beginner to dust off the instruments and recapture the adrenalin of their first or last live performance. September 1, culminating in a gig at the Northern Star on Sunday, October 11. “It’s all about getting people out there and playing again – it’s a great way to get back into music or to get onstage for the first time,” Pritchard told Newcastle Weekly. “It will all be done at Muso’s corner – we’ll have a meet-andgreet and I’ll pair people up into bands – all instruments and stuff are provided - and we’ll have four
or five rehearsals and then the big gig at the end of it which is always a hell of a lot of fun – we’ll also be raising money for Newcastle Music Therapy for Kids at the John Hunter Hospital so it’s for a great cause as well,” he said. “It doesn’t matter your skill or experience level. Everyone is good enough to be a weekend warrior.” For more information on visit weekendwarriors.org.au - Stephen Bisset

MILLSY IMPARTS WISDOM TO HUNTER THEATRE HOPEFULS ormer Australian Idol finalist and theatrical wunderkind Rob ‘Millsy’ Mills was in town last week hosting a masterclass for students at a new, Newcastle-first, theatre course at WEA Hunter. The 12-month Diploma of Musical Theatre course offers a range of practical and theoretical study options with a focus on musicianship, dance, performance and creativity. Students also produce two major cabaret-style performances and a full musical theatre production. Mills, who recently completed his starring role run in the smash hit musical Legally Blonde, was on hand to impart some invaluable wisdom and was full of praise for the students. “The kids have been terrific- they wanted to know how to get into the industry and how it works,” he said. “I’ve been lucky enough to come

along to WEA Hunter and, from what I’ve seen, they’ve got great voices, great talent and great skills. Student Konstanze Koedam echoed Mills’s sentiments. “I wasn’t completely sure what I was going to do after finishing school last year, so I thought this course would be really beneficial in homing in on my skills in musical theatre,” she said. “[Today] has been great because it has allowed me to learn more about the professional industry from someone who is in it and living it.”

Whether he is turning his camera on London’s criminal underground, barely intelligible ‘pikeys’ or super sleuths in Victorian England, there’s no doubt that director Guy Ritchie always brings a palpable kinetic energy and inimitable style to his films. The same can be definitely said of his latest outing The Man From U.N.C.L.E - while the editing may not be as fast, the cinematography is certainly lush and costume design impeccable. However, when it comes to believable chemistry between the two leads - Henry Cavill and Armie Hamer - this Cold War throwback is left a little out in the cold. Based on the mid-60s TV show, this iteration, while brimming with a stylistically idealised version of the 60s, there is an overarching sense of ‘why?’ Verdict: Enjoyable but ultimately forgettable 2/5

WISH UPON THIS LUCKY STAR
When it comes to Asian takeaway options, it’s an indisputable fact that the people of the greater Hunter region are spoilt for choice. owever, after my inaugural visit to the Lucky Star Asian Takeaway, located amid the hustle and bustle of the Pacific Highway at Charlestown, I decided this unassuming little eatery could very well be one of the best examples of fast, fresh take-away fare this neck of the woods has to offer. The first thing that struck this reviewer at Lucky Star was the focus on freshness. With everything cooked to order, sourcing the freshest ingredients possible, it doesn’t really matter what you order from the eclectic and hefty menu - a clean, fresh and zesty dining experience is what you can expect. Speaking of fresh fare, my first cab off the rank, was the beef shank noodles – a new dish that is the perfect way to usher in the change of seasons. A healthy portion of perfectly cooked beef shank sat atop a delectable mound of elegantly flavored noodles and fresh salad. This flavoursome and morish dish would make the ideal ‘lunch on the run’. 20
Next up was the seafood laksa - a classic dish done to perfection by Lucky Star. A literal galaxy of seafood - mussels, prawns, squid et al – populated the richly flavoured laksa which possessed just the right amount of heat. Thirdly, I was lucky enough to sample the beef and chicken combination and, again, this classic Asian dish was an absolute delight. The chicken and beef, along with the fresh vegetables, were stir-fried perfectly and the sauce, while subtle, possessed a depth of flavor that truly astounded. Perhaps the pièce de résistance however, amid this cornucopia of delectable fare, was the house special - coconut pie. Presented more like a cigar than a pie, this deceptively simple dessert - lashings of shredded coconut and syrup encased in golden brown and perfectly crispy pastry - was an absolute delight from start to finish. DINING
HAIL CAESAR hen it comes to iconic salads – none can hold a candle to the mighty Caesar. This, now legendary salad, was created by Caesar Cardini, who ran Caesar’s Place in Tijuana, Mexico – a restaurant popular with Hollywood stars like Jean Harlow and Clark Gable during the Prohibition period of the 1920’s. On a hot July 4th, 1924 with the kitchen unprepared for a full restaurant, he gathered up the ingredients he had available, tossed
them together with a flourish in the middle of the crowded restaurant and invented, almost by accident, his famous salad. With all natural ingredients, no preservatives, no added sugar and less than 1g of carbohydrates per serving, Cardini’s ‘The Original Caesar Dressing’ delivers the true taste of Caesar Salad.

Osland Independent Carpets aren’t your average carpet salesmen - with Wayne Osland having had 30 years in the carpet laying industry along with wife Lynne who has a lengthy background in sales - the team at Oslands is dedicated to working with you from the ground up. The team at Oslands has been busy expanding the Toronto store, which now boasts an entire section devoted to hard floor coverings as well as opening a second store in Cessnock. “The huge advantage I find is I’ve been in the job from the ground up," Owner Wayne Osland said. "Unfortunately, in our industry, there’s a lot of businesses with people with not much of an understanding of the installation process. At Oslands, we take all the intricacies of an installation into account, from the underlays we use through to the fibres in the product you’re buying. "For example, if you have pets, you shouldn’t

PICK OF THE WEEK Mansfield Park Saturday, PRIME, 2.30pm, PG (2007) Billie Piper (pictured) stars in this Jane Austen adaptation as Fannie Price, a young lady who was saved from poverty by her generous – albeit snooty – aunt and uncle (Jemma Redgrave and Douglas Hodge), the owners of Mansfield Park. On arriving, Fanny finds companionship in her cousin Edmund (Blake Ritson), who she sees as both a friend and a possible lover. But when an outrageous woman (Hayley Atwell) from London steals Edmund’s affections it looks as though all might be lost for our poor heroine.
Friday
Spider-Man
The Prestige
Sunday, 7MATE, 6.30pm, PG (2002) From the superb credit sequence it’s immediately apparent Spider-Man is a comic-book adaptation of the highest order. On a field trip, high-school nerd Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire, pictured) is bitten by a genetically enhanced spider. Next day, he’s climbing the walls, shooting hightensile webbing from his wrists and admiring his rippling physique. Alter ego established, he uses his powers to get the girl (Kirsten Dunst), net the baddies and save New York.
Saturday, NBN, 9pm, M (2006) Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight) directed this electrifying Victorian-era thriller which examines the rivalry that exists between two illusionists. Rupert Angier (Hugh Jackman, pictured) is a skilled magician who exists in the shadow of fellow conjurer Alfred Borden (Christian Bale). The shared unease is elevated when Borden pulls off an astounding, mind-bending trick. Enraged, Angier is led down an obsessive path to try to expose Borden as a fraud by deploying his assistant (Scarlett Johansson) to spy on him.

Blake is a highly intelligent Virgo, interested in everyone and everything and happy to be busy. With Venus retrograde until 3 September, she will need to be careful of tension and issues coming from female relatives, friends and co-workers. During the next 12 months, Jupiter, the luck bringer of the Zodiac, will be directly in Blake’s sign bringing good fortune career-wise and financially. This will be an ideal time to invest into property or to renovate.

ARIES MAR 21 – APR 20
CANCER JUNE 22 – JULY 22
LIBRA SEP 24 – OCT 23
CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 20
Expect the unexpected on the home front, there will be surprise visitors, startling declarations from family members, sudden awkward situations and issues to play by ear, along with a few sparks you'll have to put out. Keep your cool and handle it all calmly and positively.
Money matters will benefit from some forethought; you'd be wise to turn your mind to the prospects of encouraging your bank balance. The chances are that both you and your partner can make savings on unnecessary expenses and relieve yourselves of unwanted debts. Look at your financial situation carefully.
Good news will point the way with a matter that has been up in the air. A friend or relative might throw you into a spin and unusual requests will suddenly put you on the spot. Rather than overworking, be more sensible and set yourself a practical schedule.
Getting to know the associates of a friend will be eye-opening. Relationship issues, how to help someone and where to draw the line will require sensitive judgement. It's difficult to say no to someone you love but sometimes it’s better for everyone in the long run.
LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23
SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 22
AQUARIUS JAN 21 – FEB 19
On the career front, opportunities for advancement are all around you so don't let slower people hold you back and don't allow those who are jealous or resentful of your success put obstacles in your way. Partnerships of all kinds will need a bit of extra work.
Your emotions will have a sharp bearing on your energies and a positive inner state will soothe rising stress levels. Avoid trying to please all the people all the time as it seems the unrealistic dreams of yourself or your partner could be the cause of friction.
SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21
PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20
Complex emotions could cloud the picture with a relationship or your personal direction; defining what matters most will guide you. You will be taking a deep interest in spiritual matters and this may be the start of something that will affect the course of your life from now on.
You may be too sensitive for your own good and the slightest word that could be interpreted as criticism will cut you to the heart. This is especially true if a woman is the cause of your discontent. You’re in need of some pampering so take time out to relax.
TAURUS APR 21 – MAY 21 A difficult conversation will need a sensitive touch. Choose your words carefully when giving advice or dealing with problematic matters that suddenly surface. If there have been any issues with flatmates or family you must be prepared to face up to them and stop tension building up.
GEMINI MAY 22 – JUNE 21 There may be a sudden and unexpected trip this month and a lot to do with relatives and brothers or sisters. There may be some issues in their lives that they are going to need your support with and people will be turning to you for guidance.
Over the coming year, new projects, adventures, challenges, environment and company will bring colourful new experiences and a break from tradition or the past. Financially, you'll set a new goal. A change of direction, personally or professionally, will take you down a very different path.
VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23 With Jupiter in Virgo for the next 12 months, friends and colleagues will have a strong influence on you. Old contacts will have interesting ideas to put your way and new contacts could enter your life quite quickly.
