This week...
From the editor We are proud this week to highlight the ClubGRANTS scheme which sees millions of dollars find its way back to community groups and not-for-profit organisations. Submissions are assessed to determine the most deserving and worthwhile projects and those highlighted in our special feature certainly fit the criteria. You can read about the difference this money makes at a grassroots level through the numerous stories at the end of the magazine. And finally, my congratulations to the Knights on their stunning win over the Melbourne Storm. Beating the Storm at any time of the year is a huge achievement, but to do so on their home ground at this time of year when they are generally approaching peak form ahead of the semi-finals is amazing. Although the Knights have been out of semi-final contention for several weeks, this victory gives fans plenty of hope for the future prospects of the side under a new coach in 2016. Importantly, it gets them away from wooden-spoon territory. While it doesn’t make a huge difference if you finish 14th instead of 16th, we all know the ribbing supporters get from other fans when your team runs last, is well worth avoiding. - Paul Monforte

Newcastle University delves into food addiction study
University of Newcastle dietetics researcher Kirrilly Pursey. Photo: Jamie Wicks.
oung chocoholics and junk food aficionados are being urged to join a Hunter study examining levels of food addiction in Australia. Researchers at the University of Newcastle are looking to explore junk food addiction in young adults, with new research showing that food groups high in sugar, salt and fat can elicit reactions in the brain similar to those occurring in drug and alcohol addiction. The study is also one of the first studies in the country to look at food addiction in the Australian population. “We have done some preliminary research and found that foods that we call extra foods, things like lollies and chocolates are eaten in larger quantities by people who do display these addictive-like behaviours,” dietetics researcher Kirrilly Pursey said. “So what we are trying to do now is see if the brain responds in the same way as it does with drugs and alcohol.” Stage one of the study includes a voluntary survey for young adults between ages 18-35 which looks at addictive type behaviours by taking a look at the types of foods people are eating and whether specific types of food are related. “There’s about 63 per cent of
the Australian population that is overweight or obese at the moment,” Ms Pursey said. “What we did in our preliminary research was look if addiction was present and about 15% of the population that we studied which was 460 people had those addictive like behaviours, so it shows that it could be relatively prevalent in Australian population.” Ms Pursey said stage two involved an MRI scan of the brain. “The MRI scan will show certain areas of the brain lighting up when we show them different foods, and what we are trying to do is see if it’s similar areas lighting up as it is in those with drug addictions. “The feelgood chemical in the brain, dopamine is related to a lot of addictive processes, so there is some evidence that it is altered in people who have addictive-like eating behaviours. “So understanding the underlying mechanisms for these behaviours might identify new behavioural targets and drugs to treat obesity in some individuals and will inform better public health policy to help people make more informed decisions about food,” Ms Pursey said. Margaret Jurd College students participating in the NSW SES Secondary Schools Cadet Program.
Students equipped with skills to handle emergencies tudents at Shortland’s Margaret Jurd College are now armed with the skills to respond to crisis situations following a cadet program organised by the NSW State Emergency Service (SES) and Origin Energy.
SES volunteers visited the school to train 24 students in the tensession activity-based course which teaches leadership, teamwork, communication, safety and the importance of volunteering. NSW SES youth engagement
co-ordinator, Todd Burns, said the cadet program provides progressive and hands-on training promoting individual development, team-building skills, resilience and confidence. “The program offers students the opportunity to explore what it’s like to become part of NSW SES,” he said. “They learn directly from local volunteers what it means to serve the community in times of emergency. “Partnering with Origin to recruit more young guns will help ensure NSW SES sustains its volunteer numbers well into the future. “It is through programs like these that we can help nurture a love of community service within people and shape the next generation of community leaders.” “At the completion of the program, we encourage young men and women to join the service to ensure capability for our core roles
of responding to floods, storms and tsunamis is sustainable into the future,” Mr Burns said. Origin’s national campaigns and partnerships manager, Amy Stockfeld, said there was a real need for more people to put their hand up to join the SES. “In partnership with NSW SES, Origin is committed to training up community leaders of the future and boosting volunteering efforts in regional areas such as the Hunter,” she said. In addition to the interactive in-class sessions, the training also involves outdoor team activities based on NSW SES skill sets such as flood boats and how to perform an urban search and rescue and search for physical evidence. The NSW SES Cadet Program is suitable for secondary school students between grades 9 and 12. For information on how to become a volunteer with the NSW SES visit www.ses.nsw.gov.au

Newcastle-based motor racing brothers Aaren and Drew Russell are on the verge of a life-long dream after being granted a wildcard entry for the Bathurst 1000 on Sunday, October 11. The pair from the Novocastrian Motorsport team will join Nissan’s Kelly brothers, Rick and Todd, and the Erebus team’s Davison brothers, Will and Alex, on the grid at Mount Panorama. The Russells’ father Wayne also made four starts in the event between 1994 and 1997. Aaren Russell said competing in Australia’s most famous motor race was a very special achievement and one the team would not be taking lightly. “This is the sort of thing I’ve been working to achieve for many years and to do it with my family and our own team makes it even more special.”

After four weeks of construction, the new bridge on Dairy Arm Road at Laguna has opened to traffic. Cessnock Council’s design delivery manager Katrina Kerr said the new deck featured renewable solid wood and looked picturesque in its rural setting. “The bridge was also reinstalled at a higher level to keep the structure out of the water ensuring a longer life of 75 years,” she said. The project came to fruition under council’s Bridge Construction Program which will see significant refurbishment work undertaken on four bridges in the Laguna area and one at Mulbring over the coming months.

EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN
Having fallen in love with jazz after hearing George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue as a 12-year-old, accomplished composer and arranger Scott Bradlee has married his love of the music of yesteryear and experimenting with the elasticity of the pop form to create the YouTube phenomenon Postmodern Jukebox. ince first appearing on YouTube with their cover of Miley Cyrus’ We Can’t Stop, Postmodern Jukebox have raked in more than two million subscribers and more than 200 million views. They have recently been turning Taylor Swift into vintage cabaret with their take on Blank Space, jazzing up Meghan Trainor’s All About the Bass, adding a 70’s soul vibe to Backstreet Boys I Want It That Way plus making a powerful vocal/ piano version of Hozier’s Take Me To Church.
The seeds of Postmodern Jukebox were first sewn in Bradlee’s formative years when he discovered a penchant for marrying disparate styles together. “I’ve always been a fan of older styles of music and, when I was growing up, I would take things like Notorious B.I.G instrumental pieces and, a bit later, when I started playing in clubs, I used to have a lot of fun sneaking little ragtime sections into songs like Freebird,” Bradlee laughed.
“It’s been pretty crazy – I never thought it would take off like this,” Bradlee told Newcastle Weekly. “It’s always been a dream of mind to travel the world with my music and somewhere like Australia was a place I always thought I would only visit in my mind. “So we’re so excited to be coming down for the first time – it will be a two-hour show full of great arrangements and we’ve got something like four or six vocalists, a great band and there’s even a bit of tap dancing and comedy thrown in as well.”
Bradlee’s sonic experiments took on another dimension when he teamed up with a group of New York musicians to release A Motown Tribute to Nickelback, however, it wasn’t until Bradlee decided to unleash his experiments to the world via YouTube and, 230,illion combined views later, it looks as though the experiment is working. “I think that approaching music like this taps into nostalgia in a really interesting way,” Bradlee said. “I figured that YouTube would be a great place to launch these experiments, under the umbrella of Postmodern Jukebox, as there was
12

The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra are headed to Newcastle.
COME HEAR THE BIG BAND PLAY hen it comes to big names in the history of jazz, swing and big band, few loom as large as the iconic Tommy Dorsey. Affectionately known as the “Sentimental Gentleman of Swing”, Dorsey and his orchestra are acknowledged as one of the true legends of that era. The industry acknowledged him with Grammy Awards for I’ll Never Smile Again and I’m Getting Sentimental Over You. It may’ve been 59 years since Dorsey’s death, but his orchestra is still going strong and will be heading to Newcastle with a show paying tribute to one of Dorsey’s early discoveries – Frank Sinatra. “It’s the 100th anniversary of Frank’s birth so we thought this was a great way to pay tribute to him,” current orchestra leader Terry Meyers told Newcastle Weekly. “There’s obviously going to be a lot of Sinatra’s music in the show, not just the stuff he did with Tommy, but we also try to focus a little bit on the different musical periods of his life. But, because the orchestra has a legacy all its own - we’ve got to throw in a few orchestra standards as well. I
guess the hardest part of my job is deciding what not to play.” After Dorsey poached Sinatra from bandleader Harry James in 1940, Sinatra went on to make an astonishing eighty recordings with Dorsey from 1940 to 1942 - including In The Blue of the Evening and This Love of Mine. Myers said that while The Chairman of The Board went on to master myriad styles, it was Dorsey’s early influence that set him on the right track. “Sinatra really made his name with Dorsey,” he said. “Also, he learnt so much about vocal technique through Tommy – he learned how to breathe by watching Dorsey play the trombone.” With the arrival of rock and roll in the 50s signaling a decline in the popularity of big bands as mainstream entertainment, it is a genre that still continues to find its audience with each generation. For Meyers, it’s due to the timelessness of the music. “It’s just so clean and refreshing sounding,” he said. Roser brings the rock
Ska kings The Porkers will skank it up at the Cambridge.
PORKMAN RIDES AGAIN f you have been lucky enough to catch seminal Newcastle ska demigods The Porkers on one of their recent reunion shows, you would know full well that Pete Porker and co can still well and truly “bring it” in the live arena. Those who have seen The Porkers will know that even on an off night, they were one of the most engaging live bands in Australia - their surf/ punk/rockabilly-infused ska mixing perfectly with Cooper’s frenetic stage presence. Starting life in 1987, their infectious brand of what Cooper describes as “bastardised ska” quickly captured the hearts of the Australian
festival and record buying public and their brilliant debut long player Grunt propelled them even further into the stratosphere with slots on both the Australian and US Vans Warped tours. It’s always a treat when The Porkers play on home soil, but their hit out at the Cambridge next weekend promises to be extra big as their bringing Sydney comedy punks, Nancy Vandal, Newcastle’s own Australian Beef Week Show, as well as Crapulous Gee Gaw, Driverside Airbag, Larange Bucket and the Dirty Eights along for the ride. The Porkers - Cambridge Hotel - Saturday, August 29.
Perhaps best known for scarily accurate representations of Jimmy Barnes and Jon Bon Jovi in the acclaimed Chisel Revived and Livin’on a Prayer Bon Jovi Tribute bands, Brisbane-based Carter Roser certainly knows how to rock. Rosers next trip to our next of the woods will be as part of the tub-thumping, unapologetically rock and roll of concept outfit Mighty Rock. Roser has also assembled a who’s who of the Newcastle music scene – Steve ‘Mac’ McLennan (Swanee, Kevin Borich), Ian Walker (Code Red, the V-Dubs), Lee Brossman (Richard Clapton, Jackson Browne, Blackfeather) and Jason Paul Tyler (McNastys, Glam Slam). “Newcastle is a massive rock and roll town with some brilliant players – most of which I’ve been lucky enough to get together,” he told Newcastle Weekly. He added that people could expect a night of unabashed rock and roll swagger. “It’s all about big, loud rock and roll – Zeppelin, AC/DC, Rose Tattoo - just great rock and roll songs that people don’t really get the chance to hear anymore because a lot of cover bands, for whatever reason are moving into more mellow, folky territory.” Carter Roser and Mighty Rock - Belmont Bowling Club - Sunday, August 30. - Stephen Bisset

The Viper Creek Band are back in town next month.
KICK UP SOME DUST WITH VIPER CREEK ewcastle-based country sensation The Viper Creek Band will be heading home for a mammoth free show at Wallsend Diggers next month. The band was formed in 2011 with a firm belief that country music in Australia was ready for an exciting new sound and began writing, rehearsing, playing live and building up a loyal fanbase at a prodigious pace. Fast forward to 2014 and they were one of the most talked about acts at that year’s Tamworth Country Music Festival. They also snagged a high-profile tour support with fellow country rockers McAlister Kemp as well
as appearances at the Gympie Muster and CMC Rocks alongside such global heavy hitters as Toby Keith, Kellie Pickler, Love and Theft and the Eli Young Band. They released their debut long player, Kicking Up Dust, back in March last year and was met with a number two debut slot on the ARIA Australian country albums chart. With the subsequent single Tonight Tonight still kicking various goals around the traps it’s pretty much a given that you haven’t heard the last of these boys yet. The Viper Creek BandWallsend Diggers – Friday, September 4.
They’re just too hip, baby While that king of sartorial cool, Dave Graney has been a frequent visitor to this region in various guises, it’s been way too long since his seminal outfit Dave Graney and the Coral Snakes have ventured up the Hume to regale us Novocastrians with their “soft and sext sound”. Eighteen years, in fact. Well that’s all about to change when as Graney, drummer Clare Moore, guitarist Ron Hayward, bass player Stu Thomas and ivory tinkler Robin Casinader present their classically slinky 1993 set Night of the Wolverine in its entirety at Lizotte’s. The fourth album in the Coral Snakes canon, Night of the Wolverine included the classic groover You’re Just Too Hip, Baby, as well as the hypnotic

picture and flips its switch to the dark side. In a diner, Abe and Jill overhear a conversation in which a distraught woman is telling sympathetic friends about her disastrous encounter with a corrupt judge. Jill and Abe are both appalled and, in his case, invigorated. After learning more, he comes to the conclusion that the world would be a better place if the judge were dead. And with that, a new cinematic reference is added to Allen's script – Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train, the story of a bid to commit the perfect murder. While this Strangers on a Trainesque turn does feel a little clunky at times, overall Irrational Man is highly watchable fare – thanks in no small part to the brooding gravitas that Phoenix brings to the role.

comes from the former category. Irrational Man tells the story of Abe (a very pot-bellied Joaquin Phoenix) – a drunken, disillusioned philosophy professor wracked with ennui. Abe’s pessimistic outlook and ruminations on the meaningless of existence, prove to be quite the hit with science lecturer Rita (Parker Posey) and student Jill (Emma Stone). With two women essentially throwing themselves at Abe, things should be looking up – but he just can’t seem to escape his funk. This is familiar territory for Allen, however, things take a decidedly Hitchcockian and even Dostoyevskian turn when Abe overhears a woman telling friends that a corrupt judge will file against her in a custody case. Abe, deciding that murder can be considered a moral imperative, hatches a plan to kill the judge and restore a certain balance to the universe.
time out - meet the artist PETER LANKAS When did you first know you wanted to be a professional artist? It was after I completed my first year at Sydney University. At the ‘Tin Sheds’ everyone used to say, “what are you doing here, you should be at art school”. Academia just was not the way to go for me. So off to art school it was, to follow an art-making path. But in many ways it was always there from the very beginning, no escape to that destiny. Describe your work. Momentary impressions of life. Artists are visual poets, I am a painter, so it is to capture the visual, visceral and intellectual moments and ideas through the language of paint. I am interested in pulling things apart, looking not only at the narrative but also the abstract. How things fit together. Drawing is an integral part of my practice, so mark-making and the nature of the mark and gesture, to describe the visual is of paramount interest. It is also about the nature of my materials and how they work. What inspires you? Whatever grabs you in the heart, gut or the head.
You know when there is a connection happening with the internal or external. It could be anything at any time. Things within my world, usually the ordinary, everyday things. I try to keep it simple. What has been your greatest achievement? Sharing my knowledge and little wisdom as a teacher and mentor with students and other artists. What would be your advice for budding artists? Just do it. Be true to your heart, work hard, establish a work ethic and a love of your process. if you don’t have a passion do something else. You have to have the hunger for it and that comes from working hard. Chuck Close said the muse will come only if you work, I believe that, inspiration comes only from working. Peter Lankas is exhibiting in the group exhibition Suburban Dreams at Glasshouse Regional Gallery, Port Macquarie until 13 September. COOK THINGS UP FOR FATHER’S DAY
As winter slowly starts to recede, and the warmer weather rolls in, thoughts turn from warming winter stews and baked lunches, to getting outside around the traditional Aussie barbecue. e’re not just talking about sizzling snags and delicious steaks – think exotic marinades and mouth-watering seafood. And all just in time for Father’s Day! Here, we’ve rounded up everything you need to know to create the perfect Father’s Day for your dad.
Barbecuing basics There’s nothing like the smoky aroma and delicious taste of barbecue food – but not if your steaks are tough and your seafood is chewy. Leading Sydney chef Mark Jensen (Red Lantern, Salmon & Bear), offers some top tips to transform you into the ruler of your grill in an instant: • Be prepared: Preparation is everything. Have barbecue tongs and implements on hand, salads and sides at the ready and serving plates to swiftly transfer cooked items from the grill. This will allow you to concentrate on the
task at hand. • Turn up the heat: Pre-heat your grill so it’s nice and hot for a good 15-20 minutes prior to cooking. This helps sear meat on contact, keeping the inside moist and preventing sticking. Searing can help give that lovely caramelisation that gives barbecue food its delicious taste. • Meat market: Bring meat out of the fridge and to room temperature before you place it on the grill. This enables the fibres to stay

relaxed during the cooking process, keeping the meat tender. Make sure you rest your meat before slicing or serving to ensure juices are distributed evenly. • Mmm marinade: Marinades, rubs, bastes and sauces are a marriage made in heaven for barbecue food. Prepare early and give time for the flavour to penetrate the meat or seafood for the best flavour.
The perfect steak When it comes to the perfect steak, it’s all about letting the beef speak for itself – only adding a little salt and pepper. According to restaurateur Adam North from Entrecôte, Rib Eye is a cut with a lot of intramuscular fat or marbling and as a result packs a huge amount of flavour. He says to cook the perfect steak: • Bring steak to room temperature. • Apply oil, salt and pepper. • Get the cooking surface as hot as you can. • Sear on both sides until cooked how desired (rare, medium, well done). • You have to let your steak rest. It’s the most important part; it needs to be rested for as long as you can hold out. And then enjoy.

PICK OF THE WEEK From Russia With Love Friday, NBN, 10pm, PG (1963) More an espionage thriller than the usual Bond-as-superhero caper, as Bond (Sean Connery, pictured) heads into Turkey to retrieve a decoding machine for MI6. Problem is, there’s an assassin on his tail (Robert Shaw) and a beautiful woman (Daniela Bianchi) who is being used as a pawn by a SPECTRE to get the machine. Three-time Bond director Terence Young’s stylish direction owes a big debt to Hitchcock, raising the suspense and avoiding the obvious good-versus-evil caricatures.
Friday
Amélie
Inception
Saturday, SBS, 9pm, M (2001) Out of the mind of French writer-director Jean-Pierre Jeunet has sprung this heavenly vision of love, fate, beauty and chance. Amelie (Audrey Tautou, pictured) is an innocent and naive girl in Paris with a compulsion to bring joy to everyone she knows, but can she find a certain happiness that’s all her own? It’s Jeunet’s bold and miraculous visual interpretation of the simple, seemingly inconsequential things in life that lift this modern fable to extraordinary, whimsical heights.
Thursday, GO!, 8.30pm, M (2010) Set in a world where it is possible to enter the human mind by invading a person’s dreams, Leonardo DiCaprio (pictured) stars as dream extractor Dom Cobb, who specialises in subconscious security, but who also steals from his unsuspecting clients. After receiving an offer too good to refuse, Dom sets about trying to plant an idea into a man’s (Cillian Murphy) mind, which will wreak havoc on his father’s corporation.

Relationship matters are going to be a source of concern for Cameron during the next 12 months. If she wants to resolve some important issues with loved ones, she’ll need to discuss her innermost feelings with those of importance to her. This isn’t easy for someone with a Virgo Sun Sign as they would prefer to do something practical. Whilst Cameron is prepared to fit in with others, she mustn’t neglect her own needs.

CANCER JUNE 22 – JULY 22
LIBRA SEP 24 – OCT 23
CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 20
The Full Moon on the 29th indicates that you could be feeling somewhat vulnerable and may be happier keeping a low profile attending to work behind the scenes while you fine-tune your plans for the future. Don’t be too aggressive with your responses if you’re on shaky ground.
The 29 August Full Moon indicates your energy reserves are low and you’re feeling a little worn out. Make some time to relax before you make yourself ill. Even if it’s only possible to get a few hours rest and an early night, take the opportunity to do so.
The 29 August Full Moon indicates you need to get yourself into better shape to face the challenges ahead. A few early nights, a better diet and a readiness to give up bad habits will work wonders. Friends, colleagues and loved ones will be there to help if you let them.
The 29 August Full Moon indicates that your mind feels like it’s stuffed with cotton wool so do as little as possible, as anything you start will need to be done again. You could waste a lot of time if you’re overly determined now; mistakes will be easily made.
TAURUS APR 21 – MAY 21
LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23
SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 22
AQUARIUS JAN 21 – FEB 19
The 29 August Full Moon suggests you will be grappling with a rather busy schedule, so be extra careful when handling paperwork or other important projects. Remember there is only one of you so avoid rushing from place to place otherwise strains, sprains and accidents are likely.
The Full Moon on the 29th indicates that unexpected expenses are likely. You would like nothing better than a riotous night out, but if your bank balance won’t stand it, you’ll have to be more economical. Grumbling won't help when financial realities have to be faced.
The Full Moon on the 29th indicates that if you have to deal with awkward, demanding children or puerile adults, you will be able to resolve the most troubling of situations through empathy and by not overreacting. Your relationships with women in general could be less than good this week.
The Full Moon on the 29th indicates that you need to be careful not to be talked into doing anything that you don’t want to do. Stick to your own timetable and don’t allow others to take money from you if you don’t feel that you should give it.
GEMINI MAY 22 – JUNE 21
VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23
SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21
PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20
The Full Moon on 29 August indicates that too much interference from others at work could result in you losing patience; put up a ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign and you’ll feel better for some solitude. It will be difficult to influence or make an impression on those who matter.
The Full Moon on 29 August indicates that volcanic rumblings of discontent are amongst your friends and loved ones. If you’re a protagonist in a dispute, don't expect it to be solved easily. Fun new contacts will make you smile and an ally or kindred spirit may emerge.
The Full Moon on 29 August is a fairly mixed up time emotionally speaking because you feel somewhat vulnerable. There may also be a vague suspicion of a friend’s motives but don't do anything about it until you have solid proof. Check any travel arrangements carefully.
The 29 August Full Moon warns you about overloading your schedule. The more you take on, the more tired you’ll be and the harder the effort needed to complete your tasks. Be easy on yourself and don’t store up stressful problems for the future. Take some ‘me time’.

It has displays, live entertainment by indigenous performers, information stalls, kids and cultural activities and a free BBQ for the community. YOUTH OFF THE STREETS Youth Off The Streets is a nondenominational community organisation assists youth aged 12-25 facing challenges such as homelessness, drug and alcohol dependency, exclusion from school, mental health issues, poverty and isolation. We support these young people as they work to turn their lives around, overcoming immense personal traumas such as neglect and physical, psychological and emotional abuse. Over 8000 young people are assisted annually through our services across the state.
Our services include four high schools, psychologists, Aboriginal services, a new Muslim service, homelessness, outreach and residential services. In the Hunter Valley we run two outreaches outside normal working hours, we empower youth and advocate for them, as well as reaching the wider community by offering structured programs, school programs, youth traineeships, holding youth and community events, excursions, sport and recreation activities and school holiday activities.

PAINT THE LAKE READ The Paint the Lake REaD program and the Eastlake Domestic Violence committee supports the Eastlake Domestic Violence Paint the Lake REaD. Eastlake Domestic Violence Committee: The donation will go towards helping our committee to educate the community about domestic and family violence in Lake Macquarie, and supporting women and children in knowing what services are available to them, should they ever need them. Domestic violence is so much more than just physical violence, it includes emotional, psychological and sexual abuse as well, and we aim to educate
the community to safely challenge any behaviours that they may witness. The campaigns that we run throughout the years encourage a community that says no towards violence against women and children. Fennel Bay School - Paint the Lake REaD: This is an early literacy initiative targeted towards involving the whole community to read, rhyme, sing, talk, and yarn with children, from birth, so that they are more ready to learn when they get to school. This program will be filtered throughout the community and resources will be purchased to support families to engage with children through literacy.

Specifically the program: • Targets students in Year 10 or Year 11 who are potential early school leavers • Enhances the strengths, skills, abilities and interests of
young people • Involves volunteer community members trained in mentoring • Uses a coordinated approach to providing mentoring support for young people in local high schools • Enhances the link between schools and their communities

STARLIGHT CHILDREN'S FOUNDATION Captain Starlight and the Starlight Express Rooms were developed to complement the Australian healthcare system in partnership with leading Australian health professionals, and exist nowhere else in the world. Starlight Express Rooms provide a medical-free respite for seriously ill children and their families. Every child admitted to a children’s hospital in Australia can access the Starlight Express Room with their parents and siblings. Starlight creates these respite opportunities by giving families time together and children a chance
to play, interact with other children and have fun. There are Starlight Express Rooms in every children’s hospital across Australia including rooms in The Children’s Hospital at Westmead (NSW), Sydney Children's Hospital (NSW), John Hunter Children's Hospital (NSW), Canberra Hospital (ACT), Women’s & Children’s Hospital (SA), Mater Children's Hospital (QLD), The Royal Children's Hospital (VIC), Monash Medical Centre (VIC), Princess Margaret Hospital for Children (WA) and Royal Darwin Hospital (NT)
The Swansea RSL Sub-Branch Major Project for 2014 /2015 was the new World War One, “Rising Sun” memorial which was opened on Anzac Day, The Sub-Branch supports their members and returned men and women with aid, welfare work with veterans in representing their needs with the Department of Veteran Affairs, hospital and nursing home visits and funerals. With all World War Two veterans now over ninety, the numbers to service are rapidly decreasing but the number of visits required has increased as age takes
its toll on these veterans and those that have followed in other conflicts. While most veterans are well looked after in nursing homes they do get lonely. It is wonderful to see their eyes light up when another veteran mate visits.

NEWCASTLE AND HUNTER VIETNAM VETERANS The Newcastle and Hunter Region Vietnam Veterans (NHRVV) was set up as a welfare organisation by Vietnam Veterans to help and assist other Vietnam veterans, and their families, who had fallen on hard times, or just needed to be reassured that they are still part of the wider community. We are a registered charity and
have been looking after welfare since the early 1970’s. Over the years our Pensions and Welfare Officers have achieved such high regard, that they are assisting veterans from WW2 to the latest conflicts, other ex-service organisations, serving and exservice members of the Australian Defence Force, as well as their
dependants, widows and widowers. Many veteran and ex-service personnel are still unaware of their entitlements and benefits that are part of government legislation that, by law, the veteran, ex-service and serving person is entitled to. We are staffed entirely by volunteers who provide these services. We assist all ADF members past
and current with establishing their eligibility and assist with processing and preparing their claim forms for submission to DVA, and if you want to make a claim please contact our office on 4951 2666 or email nclvets@bigpond.net.au This is a free service and you do not have to be a Vietnam Veteran to qualify.
THE SHEPHERD CENTRE Thousands of children who are deaf or hearing impaired have been assisted by The Shepherd Centre by learning how to listen and speak so they may reach their full potential in life. Recognised as a world leader in the field of Auditory-Verbal Therapy, the organisation provides parents with the tools, strategies and methods they need to teach their children to listen, understand the meaning of sound, and to speak. The intensive, family-centred, early intervention program ensures that children with hearing impairment can reach their full potential and participate fully in society by learning to listen and speak. “The Shepherd Centre understand families because it was created by a family who also wanted their two hearingimpaired children to develop spoken language. We owe a debt to the Shepherd Family and the fabulous staff of The Shepherd
Centre for the future that they have given our son through the early intervention program especially in regional NSW where their services, understanding and expertise are definitely needed,” Roslyn Wyburn, mum of Luke from Newcastle, said. Our program comprises of a combination of individual and group listening, speech and language sessions for children aged 0-5 along with clinical audiology and counselling support. Today, The Shepherd Centre helps children and families within our five centres in NSW and ACT as well as families in rural and remote areas of Australia and overseas via annual residential workshops and tele-intervention. More than 90% of Shepherd Centre graduates enter mainstream schools at age five each year; the majority with communication skills on par with their hearing peers. “Unveiling Deafness” - a 16
week training program to support families from Newcastle with the positive social, emotional and educational development of
deaf children. It aims to reduce the isolation of deaf children by developing their connectedness to their communities.
THE MEN’S SHED The Every Bloke Needs A Shed project was extremely successful in the engagement of men with dementia and introducing them to their local men’s shed. However, to make sure the program was sustainable, and
could be rolled out to more sheds, a manual – a Dementia men’s shed toolkit – has been developed. The toolkit will provide guidance and give practical tips on how other men’s sheds can support men living with dementia.

LEUKAEMIA FOUNDATION OF AUSTRALIA Every day, 34 Australians are diagnosed with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma or related blood disorder. Blood cancer can develop in anyone, at any time. With few clearly identified risk factors and sometimes no real warning, the impact is immense for the person and their loved ones. The Leukaemia Foundation provides personalised care and support to patients, families and their carers at a time when they need it most. Here in Newcastle we are proud to provide locals, and those needing to relocate to Newcastle for treatments who in a way become locals, with much needed ‘homeaway-from-home’ accommodation
and transport. These practical services help to lessen the impact of a blood cancer diagnosis, allowing the families to focus on the most important thing – getting well. The Leukaemia Foundation receives no ongoing government funding and relies on the generous support of the community.
MARINE RESCUE LAKE MACQUARIE Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie is a non-profit organisation completely run by volunteers. Our primary goal is to save lives at sea. To do this we operate two bases: the radio base at Swansea Heads overlooking Swansea bar and the boat base at Pelican. Our bases are operational 24/7 with 152 volunteers sharing the rostered shifts to ensure that when the public need us, we can respond. Our on-water assets include four rescue vessels and one training vessel. During 2014, we assisted 387 vessels in need of our
service and our volunteers provided 16,359 hours to run the radio base and 21,193 hours to run the boat operations. Although we receive limited Government funding, we rely on donations and fundraising activities to cover our operations. We are always looking for more volunteers for fundraising, manning the radio base or crewing on our rescue vessels. If you’re interested in volunteering with us, please call 49716054 for more information and an application form.
LITTLE WINGS Little Wings is a not-for-profit organisation supporting children with serious illnesses and their families from regional and rural New South Wales. We provide these children with a free flight service to and from major city hospitals for specialised treatment. Little Wings began its flight operation in 2012 servicing The Sydney Children’s Health Network and are now expanding the service to include The John Hunter Children’s Hospital. Little Wings’ objective is to provide support and care to these children and their families by: • Lessening the travel fatigue experience by these sick children who would otherwise have to travel by road or public transport; • Lessening the financial burden associated with long distance travel and time away from employment; • Returning children home in a timely and safe manner enabling the families to remain together as much as possible. This improves the child’s quality of life and recovery process and enhances family cohesiveness; • Providing urgent short notice transport for family members to support their sick child; • Not having them exposed to the
risk of infection associated with travelling on public transport and commercial flights, which in turn increases the effectiveness of the child’s treatment. Once a child is accepted into the Little Wings flight program, flight requests are submitted, supported by clearance for travel to and from Sydney and Newcastle which include the provision of ground transport from the airport to the hospital. Patients and their families are flown in a pressurized aircraft by one of our pilots from the airport closest to their home and back home. In FY2015, Little Wings completed 234 flights assisting 562 people. Little Wings aims in the next financial year to provide a further 300 flights assisting 720 paediatric patients and their families. Little Wings is a registered charity which holds Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status. Our flight program relies solely on private and corporate donations to ensure this vital service continues to be made available to sick children and their families. Donations can be made via our website www.littlewings.org. au or at any branch of the Bank of Queensland.

CAVES BEACH SURF LIFESAVING CLUB Force cadets stormed ashore from our fleet of surfboats to the sound of gunfire and battle cries. Certainly an honour for us to be involved and the club in general. Two of our club members and boat rowers actually attended the Gallipoli re-enactment at Gallipoli on that same day. The two members were Gordon Richardson and Matt Rimmington. Well done to these two members
was for our town. We were invited by Swansea RSL to participate in the re-enactment of the landing on the Gallipoli Peninsula. This was to replicate that brave and fearless landing 100 years ago. This was performed by our boat crews in Black Ned’s Bay at the break of dawn, and supported by Phil Walmsley, Jason Gay and Mick Mottley for water safety. Thousands
watched this event as Army and Air
What a great day ANZAC day 2015
and certainly an experience. Our life-saving activities has never faltered all season and we would as a club cease to exist if we lost the ability to patrol Caves Beach. There have been no lives lost on Caves Beach while a Caves Beach SLSC patrol has been on duty. Surely this is our finest achievement. We all as Caves Beach SLSC members, supporters and sponsors can clearly claim to have
been a part in this fine result. Thank you to the patrolling members of our club. These members are the backbone of our organisation and club.
GUIDE DOGS NSW/ACT Guide Dogs NSW/ACT Orientation and Mobility Instructors have been assisted in delivering technology training to clients who are blind or vision impaired. The charity, which assists 4,000 people each year of all ages to achieve their mobility goals, purchased four iPads for client training programs with the funding. The apps, which are used to help people move safely and confidently through their environment, include GPS location with speech and magnification options, public transport information, money identification and object and
colour recognition. The iPads have been particularly useful for Guide Dogs’ children’s programs. For example the Newcastle office held a piratethemed mobility day in which children were split into teams and had to use the iPad compass to find treasure. “This was a fun day which was also a learning experience and required the children to increase their orientation and mobility skills,” Guide Dogs’ Orientation and Mobility Instructor Cindy Wilson said. A food safari themed day for teenagers in which participants used apps to locate food outlets like cupcake shops, was also a success.
Staff and students of Hamilton Public School during a school visit by the HMF
The teenagers had to plan how they were going to travel to the various locations using public transport apps on the iPad. Those with low vision could utilise the zoom feature and enlarge the maps or text, while those who were totally blind used VoiceOver to read the information on the screen.

HUNTER MELANOMA FOUNDATION As a small, local charity, with no government funding, the Hunter Melanoma Foundation (HMF) depends solely on the support of the community it serves. All the generous donations will go directly to our Primary School SunSafe program. With ongoing educational visits, and the provision of sunsafe kits to every child in these schools, the HMF continues to provide vital information about skin cancer prevention and SunSafety to reduce the occurrence of the disease later in life. The Foundation may also use some of the funding to target the hard to reach 12 to 15 year old students in the hope that the SunSafe lessons can stay with them as they learn to make their own decisions and take responsibility for their own health.
