From the editor Our cover story this week takes a look at the upcoming tour of England by a number of talented young players from Macquarie Football. Excursions certainly have gone up a notch since I was young, when going to a museum or on a ferry was a big deal. It’s a fantastic opportunity for the kids to have a close-up look at the facilities of some of the most famous clubs in the world. These clubs receive hundreds of requests a year for visits and it’s a great honour to be invited into their inner sanctum. Hopefully it inspires them all to the extent that we see them, one day, playing for the Jets in the A-League. Speaking of youngsters, the school holidays are almost upon us and, in this edition, we bring you a six-page feature with plenty of ideas on how to entertain the children. School holidays seem to come around much faster now that my education days are well behind me. I often found the ten weeks between breaks could be a hard slog, although I’m sure we’d all now appreciate a two-week break every few months and six weeks off over the Christmas/New Year period. - Paul Monforte

Local lads to learn from English Premier League giants or many youngsters passionate about football, the idea of visiting English powerhouse clubs Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea would be nothing short of Nirvana. That dream is about to come true for nineteen talented locals from Macquarie Football, under the leadership of the organisation’s technical director, Phil Dando. The group will depart on 18 September for the 16-day tour that will feature training sessions
at the academies of Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea. The boys will also play matches against the academy teams of English Championship (second-tier) club Charlton Athletic, Shrewsbury Town of English League One (third tier), Chester from the fourth tier competition as well as Connahs Quay Nomads from the Welsh Premier League. There will also be stadium tours of Anfield, Old Trafford, Stamford Bridge and Wembley,
where the group will be given the chance to lift the FA Cup. Another highlight will be attendance at the Premier League clash between Liverpool and Norwich City at Anfield. Mr Dando is familiar to local football fans both as a long-serving member of the Newcastle KB United team in the former National Soccer League and as a member of ABC Radio’s commentary team, alongside Aaron Kearney, for Newcastle Jets A-League matches. Born and raised in Liverpool, he used contacts in the UK to assist in bringing the tour to fruition. “The kids will get to see what a professional club looks like and what they do,” Mr Dando said. “Playing the games against the academy teams gives us a chance to see where we are at.” Team member Matthew Boslem said the trip was an exciting opportunity to learn from a professional set-up. “I’m a Chelsea fan and I watch as many games as I can on TV, so this is going to be pretty special,” he said. Mr Dando said the trip was the result of almost a year of planning and thanked Kerry Phillips’ Great Events, Wickham and Complete Sports Solutions in the UK for fine-tuning the details. - Paul Monforte
Blokes urged to step up to the plate for health study Men of all shapes and sizes are needed for a study at the University of Newcastle which is seeking to help determine male health status and metabolic parameters. Nutrition researchers at the university are recruiting 150 men, aged between 18 and 44, to volunteer for a series of physical measurements. The study is a follow-up to last year’s Average Australian Woman project, conducted at the university by Dr Amanda Patterson, which investigated the same age group of pre-menopausal women. Statistics suggest a higher percentage of men are obese or overweight in Australia, with prevalence rates increasing. PhD student Angelica Quatela, who will be supervised by Dr
Patterson, Dr Lesley MacDonaldWicks, Professor Robin Callister and Dr Leanne Brown, said there will be some extra measurements for men. “It won’t require a great deal of time,” Mrs Quatela said. “Men just have to fill out a simple questionnaire then attend an 80-minute session at the Callaghan Campus.” “The participants will receive the interpreted results of the body measurements, including fat percentages and muscle mass, body mass index, resting metabolic rate, blood pressure and a finger stick blood measurement of lipid and glucose levels.” The project will also explore men’s breakfast tastes and habits. “Breakfast is considered to be
the most important meal of the day but, in reality, there is not enough evidence to confirm that,” Mrs Quatela said. “We will be comparing data between breakfast eaters and breakfast skippers to check for differences in their metabolic and physical measurements.” To be eligible for the study, men must not have had any cosmetic surgery to alter their body shape, not have insulin-dependent diabetes or a thyroid condition, nor suffer claustrophobia. All participants will go into the draw to win a Fitbit wrist-worn activity monitor. To express interest in being part of the study, contact Angelica Quatela on angelica.quatela@uon. edu.au or phone 0499 878 284.

The location of the proposed new suburb to be known as Kings Hill.
Public invited to have their say on new suburb for Port Stephens he Geographical Names Board is calling for public comment on a proposal from Port Stephens Council to amend the localities of Raymond Terrace and Eagleton to create a new suburb known as Kings Hill.
The location was identified as a potential urban release area in the state government’s Lower Hunter Regional Study in 2006 before being rezoned in 2010 to allow for more than 4000 new homes to be built. Chair of the Geographical
Names Board, Des Mooney, said community feedback would be encouraged before formal consideration of the proposal. “It is important place names reflect the character and history of the local area and community,” Mr Mooney said. “We want to make sure everyone has an opportunity to provide their feedback on the proposal.” Details of the proposal can be viewed, and submissions lodged, on the Geographical Names Board website gnb.nsw.gov.au Written submissions can also be lodged with the Secretary, Geographical Names Board, 346 Panorama Ave, Bathurst, NSW, 2795. A map of the proposal can be viewed at the Port Stephens Council administration building, 116 Adelaide Street, Raymond Terrace. The closing date for submissions is 5 October.

Traffic survey cameras have popped up across the Cessnock local government area. Council has appointed a consultant to undertake a Traffic and Transport Study that will collate data about vehicle numbers and movements as well as develop an overall long-term traffic and transport strategy for the region. Strategic Asset Planning Manager Stephen Long said the cameras record the way traffic use key intersections across the region. “The cameras are not for law enforcement but to collect data for input into the computer traffic modelling component of the project,” Mr Long said. "The data will be used for future development and rezoning applications but for local and regional growth plans. The surveys will be carried out from 25 August until 18 September.

SCHOOL HOLIDAY FEATURE KIDS GIVEN THE SKILLS TO RIDE THEIR WAY TO FITNESS new national program, developed by Cycling Australia, aimed at teaching children to ride safely has found its way to the Hunter region. Let’s Ride develops knowledge, skill and confidence as part of a fun and interactive learning experience. Local cycle coaching and fitness training company, Bike and Fitness, is the delivery centre for the program in the Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Maitland areas. “Let’s Ride supports kids in their independence and gives parents piece of mind,” Bike and Fitness owner, Jenny Enderby told Newcastle Weekly. “Our first program kicked off at Valentine and also had Australia’s first-ever registered participant for the Let’s Ride program.”
Let’s Ride is also delivered through the Sporting Schools program, which is Australia’s largest school-based sports participation program to help children foster a lifelong interest in sport. The next Let’s Ride session will be held on Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 September from 9am to 12 noon at Valentine Public School. The cost is $120 per child. Two sessions will be on offer - 2nd Gear for children eight to 10 years of age and 3rd Gear for 10 to 12-year-olds. 2nd Gear focuses on bike-control skills and teaches kids the techniques to enable them to ride more proficiently in a traffic-free environment such as a park. 3rd Gear teaches riding and situational awareness, providing the competencies to enable

TAKE A TRIP TO THE EMERALD ISLE
With the world’s love affair with Irish culture showing no signs of slowing down to of the Emerald Isle’s best-loved singing sensations Celtic Woman and the Celtic Tenors will keeping Irish eyes smiling in Newcastle next week. eginning life on Ireland’s national broadcaster, (RTE) in 1995 as the Three Irish Tenors, the Celtic Tenors – Matthew Gilsenan, James Nelson and Daryl Simpson have become one of the most successful Irish classical crossover acts. Now, the trio will be joining fellow Irish juggernaut Celtic Woman on an Australian tour that will stop by Newcastle next week. Matthew Gilsenan told Newcastle Weekly that the Tenors were looking forward to their inaugural Australian jaunt. “We’re on a well-deserved break at the
moment – we just got back from the US where we played a few festivals. Festivals are a little out of our comfort zone so it’s good to challenge yourself in that way,” Gilsenan said. “But Australia is going to be so much fun, especially with the wonderful Celtic woman. “It will be our first time down there, but I’ve got lots of friends and family there that I can’t wait to catch up with.” The trio will be arriving on the back of their latest album Timeless - a record that Gilsenan said represented a bit of a musical departure. “We are absolutely chuffed with it,” he

enthused. “We’ve actually been sitting on it a little while – we recorded it about a year ago and the reaction has been extra special given that we’ve really tried to push the envelope with the kinds of songs we’re doing. You know, spreading our wings away from the Celtic thing while at the same time embracing it.” To that end, the trio traverse much musical territory on Timeless, lending their formidable voices to such disparate songs as Calypso by John Denver, Can’t Help Falling In Love by Elvis Presley, the Bee Gees’ How Do You Mend a Broken Heart and The Carnival is Over by the Seekers. Further, the group enlisted the services of Australian producer Charles Fisher (Savage Garden, Hoodoo Gurus) to helm the sessions and Gilsenan said Fisher was invaluable in helping the trio realise their sonic vision for Timeless. “The real gift that Charles Fisher has is his ears – he has a really great handle on what sounds ‘cool’,” he said. “He has been known as ‘the song doctor’ for years and he has a real ability to fashion a song from it’s bare bones into something truly special – we all had the ultimate belief in his ears and impeccable taste.” So just what is it about Irish culture that seems to resonate so strongly throughout all corners of the globe? “Musicologists will probably tell you it’s got something to do with pentatonic scales and sociologists will tell you it about cultural diaspora and, in that respect, there are lots of people who display that Irish Catholic personality in all parts of the world,” Gilsenan said. “But there’s also something to be said about the history of the country as a downtrodden nation under British rule and how the people, through music and dancing, were able to be happy in a crappy situation. “It’s something that’s in our blood and I think that is very appealing.” Celtic Tenors and Celtic Woman – Civic Theatre – Wednesday 16 September - Stephen Bisset 13

To celebrate 60 years of Cash, Central Coast-based muso, Daniel Thompson will be bringing his beguiling tribute to the man in black to Belmont 16s this weekend. “The music just grabs you,” Thomson said of Cash’s formidable catalogue. “There is just so much power in those songs – it’s not hard to see why songs like Folsom Prison Blues or Ring of Fire have stood the test of time. Also, looking at a song like Hurt- that’s just an

REWIND TO THE 80S
The Cutting Crew will be flying the 80s flag at Wests this month
I had already had all of the flops and disappointments so when Cutting Crew came along I was basically ready for anything.” One thing he perhaps wasn’t ready for was the hedonistic music scene of the 1980s. “The 80s were a brilliant time but it was also quite a hedonistic period with obscene amounts of money being flung around,” he laughed. “I mean, I can remember going to America to shoot a video for $125,000. It seems ridiculous now, but even back then it was pretty silly. Having said that, they were probably the best days of my life.” 80s Mania – Wests Lambton – Sunday 20 September - Stephen Bisset

Between all of us, we’ve amassed quite a few hits so the show will be two-and-a-half to three hours of pure 80s classics.” Best known for their worldwide smash it (I Just) Died In Your Arms, Cutting Crew hit musical paydirt with their debut 1985 set Broadcast with the aforementioned single hitting the number one spot in the US and while Van Eede said that early success came as a complete surprise, previous experience with his first band The Drivers stood him in good stead. “I was 26 and had been doing it all for about six or seven years when Cutting Crew blew up so

Walking through the doors of only one of a handful of ‘traditional’ Aussie suburban pubs left in the region, you immediately get a sense that this is a pure, unadulterated local venue that caters for regulars and welcomes visitors. The bistro is no exception to this rule. The warm, friendly and relaxed atmosphere is apparent before you even take a seat. Look to the menu and it's simply like sitting down in your parents' house and asking what's for dinner. First-up for my maiden voyage was an entrée of garlic chicken balls with a zesty and piquant dipping sauce. A great starter, the golden-fried morsels of chicken were perfectly flavoured and left no hint of oily mouth-feel.

DINING
For main, my dining partner chose that staple of Aussie cuisine – crumbed lamb cutlets and vegetables and if simple food done well is was the brief, then it’s definitely mission accomplished. The crisp and crunchy cutlets were tender little morsels that begged to be picked up while the mash was a smooth, almost creamy contrast in texture I decided on another pub favourite, the ubiquitous chicken Kiev. Served with a fresh salad and golden brown chips, this whole chicken breast, swimming in a pool of heady garlic butter that caused a tsunami of garlic-flavoured waves onto my plate, and encased in a golden crumb, was certainly one to write home about. If you’re looking for some honest, unpretentious “pub grub” then sail on over to the Seven Seas. Seven Seas Hotel – 33 Cowper St, Carrington, phone 4961 2467. - Stephen Bisset

hot sauce created for taste rather than heat, it’s no wonder that Cholula Hot Sauce is regarded as one of the best hot sauces in the world. Cholula’s unique and zesty flavour finds its roots from a secret family recipe that’s over 100 years old. Cholula's delicious blend of Piquin peppers and Chili Arbol are ground into a delicate pepper paste and combined with signature seasonings and natural ingredients. This fusion results in the perfect balance between heat, flavour, fire and fun.

PICK OF THE WEEK Captain America: The First Avenger Sunday, TEN, 8.30pm, M (2011) Before we were introduced to the celebration of Marvel characters that was The Avengers, Joe Johnston gave us the back-story of World War II-era Captain America. As a 90-pound weakling rejected by the army, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans, above) nonetheless impresses enough with his persistence to be chosen for an experiment that transforms him into a supersoldier. Pitting himself against the evil Red Skull (Hugo Weaving), Rogers and his band of men lead us on a thrilling 1940s action/adventure.
Friday
Couples Retreat
RoboCop
Friday, PRIME7, 8.30pm, M (2009) Swingers co-creators Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau are the creative forces behind this breezy ensemble comedy about a quarrelling couple who head to a marriage retreat on an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, in a last-ditch effort to resuscitate their relationship. Not wanting to be left alone together, the tense twosome (played by Jason Bateman and Kristen Bell, right) bring along their coupled-up buddies who are forced to confront some very ugly realities about their own respective romances.
Monday, GO!, 9.30pm, AV15+ (1987) Whether it’s the mix of stop-motion and live action, the dark veins in the plot or the gaudy stylistic bent of director Paul Verhoeven, this late’80s sci-fi is still strangely attractive. Peter Weller (above) is perfectly impassive as a determined cop working the mean streets of a futuristic Detroit, whose fatal encounter with gangsters sees him reconstructed into the ultimate crime-fighter. Getting the bad guys is half the problem, with his old human self rising to the surface. A dark, nasty and amusing oddity.

CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 20
The New Moon on the 13th encourages you to concentrate on the health and wellbeing of you and your family. If you’re off-colour, the planets will help you to return to full health. Mercury retrograde in your relationship house indicates that you will have second thoughts about things.
You seem to be getting a better grip on your finances and there should be a bit of extra money in the offing. The New Moon on the 13th indicates you will be really connecting with people at a distance. You could also find yourself planning a rather pleasant journey.
The New Moon on the 13th indicates a need to work out what your true values are and how they match up with others around you. Mercury is retrograde in your sign creating a rather confused state of mind; you may know what you mean, yet no one else will.
The 13 September New Moon is an ideal time to read about religious or spiritual subjects or explore the world of psychic healing. A friend may come up with a solution to some of your problems, so be sure to stay in touch with your network of contacts.
TAURUS APR 21 – MAY 21
LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23
SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 22
With the 13 September New Moon, your love life looks up and a charming mood takes hold. You’ll be seductive and win admiration with ease. Your silver tongue enables you to express pent-up feelings. Mercury retrograde suggests you might need to take some time off and nurture yourself.
The 13 September New Moon indicates that the news from your place of work is positive; there could be a raise or bonus in the offing for you and it may be that your status as a worker is about to rise. You might be offered some extra clerical help.
The New Moon on 13 September indicates that you’ll find yourself at the centre of friendly interactions; it’s also a good time to be in contact with distant friends and those you haven’t seen for a while. Obstacles that have irritated you will now be swept clean away.
The New Moon on the 13th indicates that you are in line for a sizzling time romantically. This is also the ideal time for dealing with shared financial resources, taxation matters and insurance policies. Decisions involving partnerships could take you either into or out some kind of major commitment.
GEMINI MAY 22 – JUNE 21
VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23
SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21
PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20
The New Moon on 13 September should be a period of nostalgia when happy memories come flooding back. Mercury retrograde indicates that issues over children will be dominating your mind; either their behaviour needs some adjustment or you will worry about their wellbeing.
With both the Sun and New Moon in your own sign on the 13th, a much clearer period of thinking is ahead for you. You will know where you want to go and what you want to do from now on. Venus and Mars will bestow their financial blessings freely.
The New Moon on the 13th indicates that those of you who have social or career based ambitions will have a very good month, as your status among your friends and colleagues will be enhanced. You can make subtle moves towards success in your career or business.
The 13 September New Moon indicates that teamwork is the key to success this month. Mercury retrograde brings unavoidable emotional issues to the surface. Passionate affairs could be the centre of attention as you come to realise how many unconscious forces have been at work in your private life.
