From the editor Our funky, retro cover story this week features the wonderful world of pinball machines. As I was growing up in the late 80’s, pinball machines were declining in popularity as electronic gaming systems like Nintendo and Sega began their rise. Thanks to enthusiasts like Newcastle Pinball Association president, Chris Slevin, these reminders of a simpler way of life won’t die out anytime soon as parents of a similar age to myself are able to introduce pinballs to the next generation. As Mr Slevin told me, no two pinball games played on the same machine are ever exactly the same. Something simple as pulling the ball launch back a little softer or harder can dramatically change the outcome of your game. Mr Slevin also said the pinball industry was virtually extinct in the end of last century, with one major company deciding there was a stronger future in switching to making poker machines. However, there is still a solid market around the world with enough buyers for small companies to come up with new themed machines. We also take a look at a couple of medical stories, which while they don’t deal with particularly pleasant issues, are of vital importance to a significant part of the community. - Paul Monforte

Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation director, David Shanley and HeartKids NSW CEO, David Rose at the launch of the HeartsLocal program at John Hunter Hospital.
Reducing the stress and worry of childhood heart disease arents of children suffering from heart disease have assisted in the development of a new program aimed at addressing a lack of resources and information available for affected families. The HeartsLocal program, an initiative from children’s charity HeartKids NSW, will directly benefit more than 500 newly-diagnosed ‘heart families’ across regional NSW by providing a comprehensive information pack, care guide, virtual support guide of hospital facilities and financial support.
HeartKids NSW worked with a dozen parents affected by childhood heart disease to define the content and objectives and, with $55,000 in funding from Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation, made the program a reality. HeartKids NSW CEO, David Rose, said the program will help to reduce some of the anxiety for regional families travelling to Sydney for treatment. “HeartKids is a really special children’s charity that is connected to our families - they are the reason why we do what we do,” Mr Rose said.
“Most people don’t know the impact childhood heart disease has on the community. Eight children are born every day in Australia with childhood heart disease. “Tragically, there are four children who lose their battle with childhood heart disease every week. “So, that means that childhood heart disease is the greatest cause of infant mortality under the age of one. “When we were looking at HeartsLocal, we asked ourselves what the problem was that we were trying to solve. We knew that the diagnosis of childhood heart disease had a similar impact to post traumatic stress disorder. “The HeartsLocal program, focuses on ensuring that heart families are not alone on their journey and provides assistance through peer and financial support and education and information services.” Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation executive officer, Jason Bourke, said the program would help to develop a mutually supportive network for heart families and provide muchneeded emotional support. “The HeartsLocal program will provide greater clarity, information and emphatic support to newly-diagnosed heart families and also assist the 3,000 existing heart families across NSW,” Mr Bourke said. Visit heartkidsnsw.org.au for more information on the work of HeartKids. - Paul Monforte
Government grant for responsible pet ownership Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald MLC has announced that Lake Macquarie City Council will receive a grant from the NSW Government to promote responsible pet ownership in the Lake Macquarie community. Mr MacDonald said Council will use the $10,000 grant to offer ratepayers a free microchipping day and a subsidised desexing program for dogs and cats. “I congratulate Lake Macquarie City Council on taking its pro-active approach to responsible pet ownership,” Mr MacDonald said. “The NSW Government is committed to improving the positive benefits of pet ownership while strengthening safety and companion animal accountability in our neighbourhoods.” Responsible Pet Ownership Grants were
introduced in 2014 for councils to develop tailored programs to increase pet-owner responsibility and target issues addressed in the Companion Animals Taskforce report. Minister for Local Government, Paul Toole, said that this was the second round of the Government’s successful Responsible Pet Ownership grants program. “Approximately $300,000 will go directly to 29 NSW councils in 2015 to develop dog safety, microchipping, desexing, and cat and dog registration programs.” RSPCA NSW CEO Steve Coleman welcomed the second round of grants. “Anything that improves the rates of pets being vaccinated desexed and microchipped is something to be applauded,” he said.

Guiding children through their cancer journey he Greater Charitable Foundation recently provided funding to assist in the continuation of Camp Quality child life therapist, Veronica Oakley, at the John Hunter Children’s Hospital with a generous sum of $128,000 over the next two years. Child life therapy (formerly known as procedural pain or play
therapy) aims to reduce the stress and anxiety that can be associated with hospitalisation by focusing on the child’s development, social and emotional wellbeing. “Child life therapy is about helping the child through the journey and enabling them to be able to help themselves, because the more they know, the more
compliant they are and the easier it is for them to understand why it’s happening,” Ms Oakley said. “It’s virtually playing their way through each stage and the process that they have to go through.” Camp Quality child life therapists focus on supporting the psychosocial development of children diagnosed with cancer in order to build their resilience and develope effective coping strategies. Benefiting from the program is three-year-old Harper Vaughan who suffers from acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. “Harper has responded really well to Child life therapy,” Harper’s father, Brad Vaughan said. “Early on, Veronica helped, not only Harper, learn about her illness but both me and her mum as well. She also helped us to communicate better with Harper and help in understanding what’s going on throughout.” - Kayla Stephenson

RECAPTURE THE CAREFREE DAYS OF YOUTH AT PINFEST he golden age of pinball machines returns to Newcastle on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September for Pinfest at Caves Beach Hotel. Organised by the Newcastle Pinball Association, Pinfest allows enthusiasts to play an unlimited number of games on 60 machines for an entry price of $10 for a four-hour session. Newcastle Pinball Association president, Chris Slevin said all money raised would be donated to charities Beyond Blue and Justice Community. “There will be machines of all eras at Pinfest, from the ‘60s through to the KISS machine which has just been released,” Mr Slevin said. “They will all be set on freeplay. “There will also be some machines on sale. I would advise getting there early on Saturday to peruse the games for sale. “We all wear orange shirts at Pinfest so, if anyone has any questions about pinballs such as
where to have your machines repaired, we can certainly put them in touch with the right people. “We usually have around 1500 people come through over the course of the weekend. A lot of family groups with little kids like to attend. Mr Slevin, owner of Pizza ‘n’ Pinball at Broadmeadow which features a rotating stock of machines, said his love of pinball machines developed at an early age. “I grew up in Waratah and pinballs were everywhere - in corner shops, fruit shops,” he said. “My brother (Pizza ‘n’ Pinball co-owner Dominic) used to get on our bikes and ride around everywhere to play pinball. “About 13 years ago, I gave up playing football and was looking for a hobby. I bought a machine off a guy in Sydney and it just grew from there.” Tickets for Pinfest can be purchased online at pinfest.com.au or on the day at Caves Beachside

Hotel, 27 Mawson Close. Single tickets for one of the four-hour sessions on Saturday (9.30am to 1.30pm and 2.30pm to 6.30pm) are $10 with family passes available for $20. Tickets for Sunday are the same price and give access for the full day from 9.30am to 3pm. A Saturday day pass is available for both sessions at a cost of $20 for single tickets and $40 for a family. Mr Slevin said the definition of a family was quite liberal. “We consider a family to be whatever size yours happens to be. We don’t stick to the two adults and two kids rule.” - Paul Monforte

AN ARTFUL TRIBUTE f there was a voice, in this country, capable of carrying the work of icons Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen and Nick Cave it would have to be the sultry, booming baratone of Mikelangelo. Perhaps best known as the frontman of the astounding Canberra-based gypsy cabaret outfit Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen, the sonically stoic Mikelangelo, along with longtime creative foil Clare St Clare have created a show that pays homage to three of the biggest influences in the singer’s formative years. “Those guys were my mentors, growing up – I mean, when you’re a big awkward kid with a baritone voice it’s hard not to become influenced by those guys,” he told Newcastle Weekly.
Mikelangelo will take on the formidable catalogues of Cave, Waits and Cohen.

of them are on my regular playlist these days, I know most of those songs by heart, which made creating a show like this a little easier.” Aside from paying homage to the brooding trio, Mikelangelo said he would also be playing some tracks from his mesmeric and critically lauded new solo album City of Dreams. “It’s funny because, doing these shows before, people would yell out, at the end, ‘play some of your stuff’ – even people who had never heard of me before,” he said.

t’s a truism of modern music that, with each passing day, the terms alt country and Americana embrace more and more iterations. To celebrate this fact as well as our own prolific alt country scene, the good folks at Dashville have put together arguably the bill of the season to celebrate all things twangy. Just check this out for a line up – Bahamas (Canada), Shane Nicholson, Holy Holy, Wagons, Lachlan Bryan and the Wildes, Ben Salter, Ruby Boots, Perry Keys, James Thompson and Fraser A Gorman – and that’s just for starters. Throw in even more acts and myriad bushland frivolity that Dashville has become famous for and you have yourself a bone fide barnburner.

BELLA TO GIVE HEARTFELT GOODBYE Having clocked an impressive decade since the release of their sublime record Gravity with a string of rousing shows last year, local country pop trio Bella will be playing their very last hometown show at Belmont 16s this weekend. The show will be a continuation of their successful She Still Believes tour from last year (the trio received a rousing reception, earlier this year when they played two shows at the Tamworth Country Music Festival – a tacit acknowledgement that there is swtill a considerable amount of love around the traps for Bella) and will sure to be a bittersweet occasion for members Lyn Bowtell, Kate Ballantyne and Karen O’Shea. If you’ve ever heard Bella in action, you’d know that while each member is a formidable vocalist in their own right, when their voices intertwine, they create a resonance
Bella’s swansong is sure to be bittersweet.
that is rarely equalled. These world-class shows have been one of the few occasions in many years that country music fans have had the opportunity to hear this unique vocal supergroup perform live, but now the tour, and Bella itself, are coming to an end. The trio will will be revisiting songs from Gravity and performing new and unreleased songs exclusively for this memorable occasion. Bella - Belmont 16s Saturday 19 September.

MIXED GRAIN ‘RISOTTO’ WITH BACON AND PEAS LaBrooy and Robertson write: This style of ‘risotto’ goes really well with a grilled piece of barramundi or crispy-skinned jewfish. You can also serve it with steamed vegetables, or roasted brussels sprouts or root vegetables. We created this dish when we wanted something lighter than the traditionally heavy, creamy and cheesy risotto that we’re all familiar with. Food Editor’s tip: Peas are in season, so substitute the frozen peas in this dish for fresh!
INGREDIENTS
METHOD
100g pearl barley
Simmer the barley, coucous, quinoa and lentils separately until al dente. You can cook these in four small or medium saucepans at the same time, just watch for different cooking times. Drain well, combine and set aside.
100g Israeli couscous 100g red quinoa 100g Puy lentils 3 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 large red onion, finely diced 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped 4 rashers of bacon, cut into lardons 2 long red chillies, deseeded and julienned Recipe from The Blue Ducks’ Real Food by Mark LaBrooy and Darren Robertson. Available now, Plum, $39.99.
300ml vegetable stock 50g butter
Heat a medium, heavy-based saucepan over high heat. Add the oil, onion, garlic, bacon and chilli and cook until the onions are soft and the bacon starts to caramelise. Add the grains and 250ml of stock and stir gently for 3–4 minutes. The starches in the grains will start to thicken up the liquid, keep cooking until you have a risottolike consistency.
Salt flakes and freshly ground pepper
Add the butter and, once melted, add the peas and mint, squeeze over the lemon juice and season to taste. If it looks a little dry, add some more stock. Spoon into bowls and serve.
Juice of 1⁄2 lemon
Serves 4 as a side.
250g frozen peas 1 large handful of mint, leaves picked and torn

Council’s sustainability manager Alice Howe said there would be a range of activities on offer at the festival. “There will also be a tent housing eco-fashion and home décor, a zone where visitors can learn about sustainable activities like backyard bee and chicken keeping, food and market stalls, live entertainment and activities to suit the whole family,” she said. PICK OF THE WEEK Austin Powers: Goldmember
Munich
Friday, GO!, 9.30pm, M (2002) Mike Myers (left) powers on with the third and arguably cleverest of the British spy’s adventures. Pushing the envelope with aplomb, Myers and director Jay Roach have formulated another of Dr Evil’s laughably uninspired plans for world domination, sparking Austin into action in a mission that brings him to the ’70s, where he faces a new adversary: Goldmember, a disturbing Dutchman with an expensive endowment.
Friday
Saturday, SBS, 8.30pm, M (2005) Steven Spielberg’s shattering account of the aftermath of the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre is both a sobering examination of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and a riveting political thriller. A forceful Eric Bana (pictured left with co-star Geoffery Rush) is Avner, a proud Israeli and humble Mossad employee who is assigned to eliminate the 11 Palestinians behind the hostage tragedy. The jolting violence is necessarily harsh, and Spielberg’s virtuoso direction is in service of a compelling script.

Sunday, 7MATE, 7pm, PG (2006) Johnny Depp (right) stages more of his uproarious antics as sozzled sea dog Captain Jack Sparrow as he faces off against another army of the undead, headed by squid-like fiend Davy Jones (Bill Nighy). No expense is spared on creating a relentless swell of high-seas action, with Depp’s off-thewall efforts and an everflippant script keeping energy levels high.

Jupiter will be in Jason’s own sign during the next 12 months and it trines powerful Pluto in his 5th house of creativity, signalling a period of much clearer thinking for him. Jason will know where he wants to go and what he wants. It will be quite easy for him to influence others with the brilliance of his ideas and he will overwhelm any opposition with ease. He might either invest in property or think of having a family of his own.
ARIES MAR 21 – APR 20
CANCER JUNE 22 – JULY 22
LIBRA SEP 24 – OCT 23
CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 20
Mercury retrograde in your relationship house indicates that you will have second thoughts about things. While you can change your mind, don’t act just yet; new information makes you reassess. Observe and mull over your next move, but wait until 10 October before making any final decisions.
Mercury retrograde indicates that you could suffer a bit of tension in or around the home. Older family members might be making one set of demands upon you, whilst someone else makes another. You can’t tear yourself in two, so someone is going to be disappointed.
Mercury retrograde creates confusion. Your feelings and intuitions are strong, but when it comes to putting them into words, you’re at a loss. Arguments of any kind, whether friendly or aggressive, will send you fleeing for the hills since you can’t stand disharmony.
Whenever Mercury goes retrograde, the outlook is generally disrupted. This time the area of concern is your career. You might also find difficulties arising concerning your father or an older male that you are close to e.g. stepfather or uncle. Nothing will go to plan, but don’t despair.
TAURUS APR 21 – MAY 21
LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23
SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 22
AQUARIUS JAN 21 – FEB 19
Mercury retrograde indicates you might not be feeling the best, so slow down, take some time off and nurture yourself. You may have the start of some kind of ailment. This isn’t likely to be a wonderful time work-wise, so be sensible and rest if you can.
Mercury retrograde indicates you should expect a period of muddles and misunderstandings. This is not a good time to try to sort out arguments or differences of opinion, so let everyone have their own space. Try to resolve matters later this month when everyone will have clearer thinking.
Obstacles that have irritated you will be swept away. Your worldly progress will achieve priority and however this ambitious phase is manifested, you can be sure your prospects will be boosted. Mercury retrograde causes misunderstandings between you and your friends so communicate clearly.
With Mercury retrograde, you need to expect arrangements to become complicated and confusing especially those involving holidays, travel and foreign affairs. If you do have any travel plans, be sure to double-check all arrangements as delays and last minute changes are likely.
GEMINI MAY 22 – JUNE 21
VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23
SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21
PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20
You might receive some wounding criticism from a son, daughter or in-law, although you must admit that you’re being a touch oversensitive. If these hurtful words were actually meant to be constructive, then you would do worse than think hard about the issues they raise.
It will be quite easy for you to influence others with the brilliance of your ideas and you will also be able to project just the right image. Mercury retrograde indicates that you need to be careful of over indulgence and extravagance and that self-restraint will be almost impossible.
Luck is with you in connection with money and something that’s been held up in the works will come through. Mercury retrograde creates tension, but don’t blame yourself if you can’t seem to please anybody during this phase, as nobody could make your friends, clients and colleagues happy.
You might be facing a difficult decision over a health or work issue. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time to work everything out. Passionate affairs are likely to be the centre of attention as you come to realise how many unconscious forces have been at work in your private life.
