This week we shine the light on the very serious issue of domestic violence. Unfortunately, we hear about far too many instances of domestic violence with some of them leading to the victims dying. Campaigners like Joplin Higgins are to be applauded for going out of their way to find solutions to the problem. I think the American early intervention programs Ms Higgins will be heading overseas to learn more about seem to be on the right track. Getting the message across to young people before they are in serious relationships can help prevent many of these incidents. Our cover story for this edition is focused on Newcastle China Week and in particular the festival in Beaumont St, Hamilton on Sunday 28 September. Rhys Palmer, Director of Strategic Industrial Relations (Greater China) at the University of Newcastle said the festival was a window through which Newcastle can gain a better understanding of traditional and contemporary China. Newcastle Lord Mayor said the Hunter Region is continuing to grow closer in our economic relationships with China and it is both fun and fascinating to learn more about Chinese culture. That sums it up nicely and hopefully the day can attract even more than the 20,000 people who turned up for the inaugural festival last year. - Paul Monforte

GET RID OF LOW BACK PAIN, NECK PAIN AND HEADACHES FOR GOOD My wife wanted me to put this in the magazine because of her results with her low back pain and irritable bowel. We met ten years ago by accident - she became my girlfriend and subsequently my wife. She had suffered for years with low back and pelvic pain and severe irritable bowel issues. Within a couple of weeks of my wife starting treatment all of her symptoms were gone. These issues still crop up from time to time, but we are are able to resolve them quite quickly. When our second son was born, he was suffering irritability and the doctor said it was silent reflux causing colic. Dr Craig was able to adjust his spine to help reduce nerve irritability and pressure
and this resolves all of our sons issues really quickly. Two years ago Dr Oystein wanted to move back closer to the water from Griffith because of the love of water sports. He quickly showed me some amazing results with dry needling that were unresponsive to chiropractic. See, we get great results with low back pain normally but Ms G was not getting sustained pain relief with what Craig was doing, so Oystein did some dry needling sessions and got sustained long-term relief for Ms G. It was awesome to see a lady who was suffering so badly get great relief.

Shining a light on domestic violence in our community ingleton lawyer and campaigner against domestic violence, Joplin Higgins, will head to the United States in February to review rehabilitation programs for offenders with the hope of lobbying governments in Australia to introduce similar services. Ms Higgins will visit Tennessee next year to learn more about the MEND Program which trains mentors to become positive role models for young men. She will also head to Kansas, where an initiative known as Jana’s Campaign works to increase education around gender and relationship violence. The program was named in honour of Jana Mackey, an advocate for women’s rights who was murdered by her ex-boyfriend in 2008. Ms Higgins will also attend meetings with the Attorneys General of the states of Kansas and Colorado. “As a family lawyer, I work with victims of domestic violence every day,” Ms Higgins said. “I hear their stories, I witness the devastation and it is heartbreaking. It makes me determined
to confront domestic violence head-on.” Ms Higgins said the US programs had achieved strong results. “Domestic violence will not stop if the perpetrators are not rehabilitated,” she said. “I believe there should be mandatory rehabilitation programs imposed on offenders through both the criminal and family law systems. “Domestic violence goes much further than physical abuse - it is, in fact, about gender inequality. “We know that men can be victims of domestic violence too, and that is completely unacceptable. But overwhelmingly, it is women who suffer months, years and sometimes decades of abuse at the hands of men.” Ms Higgins said first-point-of-call services for domestic violence victims, especially the police, must assist victims. “It is important that police officers understand their actions are extremely important. “Just because the victim does not turn up at a police station battered and bloodied does not

It’s time to lose the booze for Ocsober
Life Education mascot Healthy Harold with Superintendent Brett Greentree.

Novocastrians are gearing up to lose the booze this October, in support of Life Education’s Ocsober initiative which aims to raise awareness of the impacts of alcohol among the young people. On Thursday 17 September, Hunter Life Education board member, Matthew Chantrey, along with local emergency services personnel, launched the Ocsober initiative with a go-kart battle between Life Education mascot Healthy Harold and community representatives at Xtreme Carts at Warners Bay. “It’s not just about fundraising, it’s mostly about gaining awareness around the impacts and the influences of alcohol on young people and teenagers,” Mr Chantrey said. “We aren’t trying to get people to stop drinking altogether, we are just trying to make people more aware. “Children mimic us, so if we don’t drink in moderation and we don’t have a very healthy attitude towards alcohol, then that is the impact these kids will grow up mirroring.” Each week, 60 teenagers are hospitalised
nationally due to alcohol-related injuries and out of that 60, one dies. The initiative is aiming to get people to drink more responsibly and by giving up alcohol for the month of October with the hope it will create a positive impact on the young generation. “If we are out and our friends offer to buy us a drink during the month of October, we ask that instead they donate the money, $5 or $7 the cost of a standard drink - to the cause,” Mr Chantrey said. “Ocsober is a good way to engage the entire country for a great cause to help raise funds for students to be delivered the Life Education program which reaches 700,000 students each year - the aim is to have around $700,000 raised, a dollar a child.” All Ocsober funds raised in the Hunter will go directly to Hunter Life Education helping to get these important education sessions into local schools. The Millfield resident was elected with the result of the ballot seven to four in his favour over fellow nominee Cr James Ryan. The election of Deputy Mayor was determined at the general meeting of Council on Wednesday 16 September for the term of office from October 2015 to the September 2016 Council election. any Novocastrians would have driven along Hannell Street in Wickham, perhaps on their way to the Fisherman’s Co-op or the Cruising Yacht Club and noticed the old double-story building at number ninety-six and wondered just what the signage referring to The Mission to Seafarers was all about. Put simply, The Mission to Seafarers is a missionary society of the Anglican church working closely with Stella Maris, an agency of the Catholic Church, to provide a home away from home for the crew of the numerous working ships visiting Newcastle.
Design duo Alisa and Lysandra will be in-store for a special two hour guest appearance, hosting an exclusive bedroom styling session to celebrate the launch of their Asta Suite, exclusive to Forty Winks!

One of the key figures at the mission is former Test cricketer, Rick McCosker, who is the Catholic Chaplain to the Port of Newcastle. “There are many dangers and hardships in being a seafarer and it is our aim to love and care for them in the best way we can in the
short time they are with us,” Mr McCosker told Newcastle Weekly. “Through the hard work, love and compassion of the chaplains and the many volunteers this main lounge area gives the seafarers a place of comfort where they can relax and feel safe and secure. “They can contact their families via the internet, check out the pre-loved clothes, partake of hot or cold refreshments, play pool, visit the chapel or just grab a book from the library and chill out, all of which is free. “Or they can change their US dollars in our shop, buy souvenirs or supplements or go to the nearest shopping centre for some retail therapy.” Mr McCosker said more than 40 volunteers kept the mission running smoothly, providing services such as bus driving, administration, organising free clothes, bookeeping, banking, cooking, and cleaning.

large in the Oz music pantheon, he does not let things like legacy define him. “It’s nice, but I don’t really think about my career in those terms. It’s kind of funny because I play shows now and there are 20 year there and, before I play something like Horses, I explain that I’ve been doing this a long time and that I was in a band in the ‘70s that had some success.” While Braithwaite said he felt a palpable sense of reinvigoration with the release of Forever the Tourist, he added that it was the live arena that truly ignites his passions.

The Lazys will blow the doors off the Stag and Hunter next month
DON’T BE LAZY, GET YOUR ROCK ON nabashed rock and roll swagger will be the order of the day when Sydney four piece The Lazys hit the Stag and Hunter next month. The band will be hitting town hot on the heels of their latest single Black Rebel - the band’s second collaboration with Billy Talent guitarist Ian D’Sa who also co-wrote their debut top ten single Shake It Like You Mean It. Lauded with rave reviews
around their trademark, highenergy live shows, The Lazys are eager to return to the stage. Their no-nonsense stage presence also grabbed the attention of Rolling Stone Magazine, who hailed them as the new torchbearers of Australian hard rock following their CMJ Music Marathon show in New York City last year. The Lazys – Stag and Hunter Hotel – Saturday 3 October
ARE YOU READY TO ROCK? If you like your rock and roll of the more legendary variety, then you’d do well to get along to Belmont Bowling Club this October long weekend for the mammoth three-day Legends of Rock Tribute music festival. Running from Friday 2 October to Sunday 4 October, the festival will see Brisbane-based frontman par excellence Carter Roser fronting Carter Roser and Mighty Rock as well as the Bon Jovi Livin on a Prayer tribute
band, 80s glam rock tribute band Crimson Dragon, Chisel Revived and Jimmy Barnes Revived. If that wasn’t enough the venue will also play host to a muscle car display, a Harley Davidson versus muscle car sound off. So, if you like it loud, Belmont Bowling club is the place to be. For more information, visit belmontbowlo.com.au Legends of Rock tribute music festival – Belmont Bowling Club – Friday 2 October to Sunday 4 October. 15

A GRAPE GROWS IN WICKHAM estled deep in the heart of Wickham, one winery is proving that you don’t need rolling hills and wide open spaces to produce a quality drop. While there’s no doubt that the suburban and light industrial milieu of Wickham might not be the first location that comes to mind when thinking of shiraz and chardonnay, one local purveyor of wines is doing its best to change that perception. Since 2009, owner and winemaker Rob Wilce has been busy crafting an extensive collection of wine – from reds and whites to sparkling and fortified. “I’ve been in the industry, mainly in the Hunter Valley, for 20-odd
years and always wanted to do my own thing, really wanted to come up with my own wines and labels,” Mr Wilce told Newcastle Weekly . “We came up with the concept around six or seven years ago – we really wanted to set up our own vineyard and winery but just didn’t have the capital – and this was a much more affordable option. “With all things, though, the idea is the easy part – it’s been a lot of hard work but it’s all been worth it.” Sourcing grapes from the Hunter Valley, Tenterfield, Orange and Young, Inner City Winemakers initially produced all wines off-site but, as of last year have started producing more and

"The original idea was to source as much fruit from Hunter Valley as we could. However there were a few years where the fruit wasn't good enough, so we went a bit further afield so we source quite a bit of fruit now from up around Tenterfield and also Orange and this year we have got some from Young.

more in Wickham. “Just trying to work out the logistics of it all can be quite a nightmare – getting all the fruit here and getting all the skins and waste away so they don’t get too whiffy can be a struggle,” he said.
With the weather warming up, Inner City Winemakers have just released their 2015 whites range – featuring a Verdelho, an aromatic German Gewürztraminer and a Fume Blanc – the latter being Wilce’s personal favourite. “All the 2015 whites are looking really good,” he said. “Especially the Fume Blanc – I just love this style of wine – it’s a very lightly oaked sav blanc – it spends about two months in French Oak and you end up with a fresh sav blanc with a lot more depth and character. PICK OF THE WEEK Rise Of The Guardians Sunday, GO!, 6.30pm, PG (2012) Think of The Avengers, then substitute Santa Clause for Iron Man, the Easter Bunny for Thor and the Tooth Fairy for the Hulk, throw in the Sandman and you have The Guardians. It’s another classic tale of good and evil, the latter being a character called Pitch Black (voiced by Jude Law) intent on stealing the faith the children of Earth have for Santa and co, using fear to do so. DreamWorks again hit the nail on the head, with an entertaining adventure movie the kids will love. Includes the voices of Hugh Jackman.
Friday
Burton and Taylor
The Heat
Saturday, ABC1, 8.30pm, M (2013) Cast aside those traumatic memories of Lindsay Lohan taking on the role of Elizabeth Taylor in Liz & Dick and surrender yourself to this smart biography. An almost unrecognisable Helena Bonham Carter and the handsome Dominic West (both pictured) take the lead as cinema’s golden couple of the ’60s. Burton and Taylor captures the end of the duo’s doomed love affair, when the ex-husband and wife prepare for a 1983 theatrical production of the play Private Lives. Bonham Cater is almost haunting in her portrayal, devastatingly depicting Taylor’s breaking heart.
Wednesday, TEN, 8.30pm, M (2013) Melissa McCarthy’s free-wheeling brand of humour and Sandra Bullock’s understated physical comedy are perfectly matched in this odd-couple cop movie. FBI special agent Sarah Ashburn (Bullock) is uptight, clean-cut and gets her crooks by the book. Boston cop Shannon Mullins (McCarthy) prefers to rough them up and scare the bejeezus out of them. Both are top cops but work best on their own, so when they are paired to bring down a ruthless drug lord, it starts badly and gets worse fast.

Librans can be rather confusing; Hilary can be shy and lacking confidence whilst being strong and determined with definite leadership qualities. A typical Libran, she is known for her charm, sophistication and diplomatic behaviour. Jupiter is moving through her 12th house during the next 12 months highlighting her inner world of imagination. She will be aware of any hurdles that face her, however her insight will provide the clues to overcome them.

The Full Moon in your own sign on the 28th indicates it is time to move on from someone or something which is obviously doing you no good. The more you cling onto something you have outgrown, the harder the release will be. Things are good at work.
The Full Moon on the 28th indicates it’s time to rethink your work/life balance. Your career might be an exciting rollercoaster but there’s more to life than worldly ambitions. You seem to be getting a better grip on your finances and there should be some extra money in the offing.
The Full Moon on 28 September sees you moving on from an important relationship, personal or professional. It is the right time to do so and once these ties are cut, they will be final. Issues of privacy are very important and you will certainly be keeping secrets.
The 28 September Full Moon indicates you may be taking on too much responsibility for others. Making others responsible for their own lives isn’t selfish – it makes you a better parent, offspring, partner and person. It’s a good time to take an interest in spiritual matters.
TAURUS APR 21 – MAY 21
LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23
SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 22
AQUARIUS JAN 21 – FEB 19
The 28 September Full Moon is the ideal time to declutter your home, your car and your life. You need to let go of any mindsets and habits that are stunting your personal growth. This isn’t likely to be a wonderful time on the work front, so pace yourself.
The 28 September Full Moon indicates that patience really is a virtue, so for the best results breathe through any frustrations. Owing to the Sun’s favourable aspect with Jupiter, you could find that you will be better off financially, no matter how unlikely that prospect seems.
The Full Moon on the 28th indicates a problem will need to be resolved at work before you can continue in a happy and peaceful frame of mind. Friends will have a powerful influence on your future prospects and the Sun’s harmonious angle gives you optimism and vitality.
The Full Moon on the 28th warns you to be careful when driving as accidents are likely, also expect your mobile phone and computer to act rather strangely. Financial events should be beneficial and you may well have an impromptu celebration to mark the occasion.
GEMINI MAY 22 – JUNE 21
VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23
SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21
PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20
The Full Moon on 28 September indicates that issues with friends are likely and you need to ditch time wasters so you can spend more time doing what you enjoy. With the sun moving through the most domestic area of your chart, the home and family are your main interests.
The Full Moon on the 28th indicates you need to be careful of thieves and tricksters. Expect complications when dealing with financial paperwork, so be certain to read everything before signing. Some sought-after goals will come to fruition in the coming year.
The Full Moon on the 28th in your house of romance indicates an inconvenient truth may cause waves. Uncomfortable as it seems, facing reality will let you make room for something fresh. This situation calls for tact; if you get frazzled you’ll risk coming across as brash.
The Full Moon on 28 September indicates that people who owe you money may delay payment, there may also be some unexpected charges on your bank statements so be certain to check them carefully. If things have been difficult in a partnership, this is your chance to resolve things.

SWEET TREATS WITHOUT THE GUILT Next month, Carolyn Hartz of SweetLife will launch her long-awaited baking book Sugar Free Baking - a collection of 60 healthy sugarfree and gluten-free recipes which prove that giving up sugar does not mean giving up the sweet treats in life. Unlike other ‘sugar free’ baking books, none of the recipes featured in Sugar Free Baking use any hidden or everyday sugars and each of them use 100% natural ingredients, meaning that Carolyn’s recipes can be enjoyed guilt-free. Sugar Free Baking is priced at $29.95.
