Making strides against cruelty RSPCA Rutherford shelter manager Sharon Wynne tells the Newcastle Weekly how the charity’s Million Paws Walk event at Speers Point this Sunday can help in the fight against animal cruelty.

I

t was the horrendous act of animal cruelty that captured the public’s attention and disgusted thousands. Nine Bull Arab-cross puppies beaten to death on the side of the road in Kurri Kurri, their lifeless bodies dumped in nearby bushland. The man responsible for the deplorable act, 25-year-old Kurri man Nathan Thompson, who was asked by a friend to get rid of the litter. His horrific actions were witnessed by a passer-by who was walking his own dog at the time and alerted authorities as Thompson fled the scene in his Holden Commodore, leaving the puppies for dead. Following a social media campaign to identify the man responsible, Thompson was arrested the following night by Central Hunter Police. Earlier this month, he was sentenced to a minimum 12-month jail term after pleading guilty to bludgeoning nine of the litter to death. The court heard that Thompson chose to kill the puppies because he did not have enough fuel 4

in his car to take them to the RSPCA shelter at Rutherford to be surrendered. His lawyer had argued that his client had not been in a “normal frame of mind” when he carried out the attack because he had taken methamphetamine (ice) and had not slept for several days but the magistrate did not accept this evidence. In sentencing him at Newcastle Local Court, Magistrate Robert Stone said Thompson had show an “appalling lack of empathy for the plight of each animal”, labelling his actions as brutal, cold-hearted and callous. He has been banned from owning an animal for the rest of his life. Miraculously, one puppy survived the attack. Currently in foster care through the RSPCA, the female puppy, which as been dubbed Lucky by shelter staff, has been recovering from head injuries in the two months since the incident and still suffers from anxiety as a result of the attack. Through her struggle, Lucky has become a

poster-pooch in the fight against animal cruelty and staff are hoping she will be well enough to make a special appearance at this year’s RSPCA Million Paws Walk, happening in Speers Point on Sunday. Rutherford RSPCA shelter manager Sharon Wynne said the annual fundraising event, the biggest on the RSPCA’s calendar, could help ensure other animals do not have to endure a similar fate to that which befell Lucky and her siblings. “For the RSPCA it basically stands for raising money for fighting cruelty against animals,” she said. “It’s for cases like Lucky where we can use the money that we raise to fight cases like that – the cost of looking after them, the costs inspectors go through to seize animals and go to court, the ongoing medical problems we have to deal with with the animals. “The more money we raise, obviously, the more money we have to help animals in need in these cruelty cases. “It’s a fantastic cause.” Participants can choose to take part in either a two-kilometre or a five-kilometre walk. There will also be live music, a free jumping castle for the kids, dog training demonstrations, microchip checks and stalls from local groomers, veterinary clinics and animal rescue organisations. Wynne said the event was not only a great day out for dogs, but a valuable source of information for pet owners. The RSPCA Million Paws Walk is on at Speers Point Park this Sunday, May 17 at 10am. To register for the event visit millionpawswalk.com.au. Registration on the day costs $20, with all funds raised going to assist local RSPCA volunteer branches and shelters care for vulnerable animals. - Amelia Parrott

An artist’s impression of the public plaza proposed for the Warners Bay town centre. Lake Macquarie City Council

Warners Bay on the up and up Building heights of up to eight storeys will be permitted in Warners Bay, with Lake Macquarie City Council endorsing new planning guidelines for the town centre on Monday night. The new controls come off the back of two years of community consultation and include provisions for a new public plaza next to the post

office, improvements to cyclelinks and footpaths along the Esplanade and building heights ranging from three to eight storeys. However, eight storey developments will only be permitted on land currently occupied by the John Street carpark. Council’s integrated planning manager Sharon Pope said the documents showed Council’s commitment to ensuring the commercial precinct’s position as a vibrant lakeside destination. “The changes outlined include a sunny public plaza with surrounding shops, cafes and apartments, improved walking and bike access to the town centre and foreshore, setback and height controls for future buildings, and car parking,” she said. “Major improvements for streets and public space are expected to happen as new development occur and provide the catalyst to implement changes.” - Amelia Parrott

Development knocked back A proposal for a function centre and kiosk on the former Newcastle Bowling Club site has been rejected by the NSW Land and Environment Court, following an appeal by the community group Friends of King Edward Park. The court found the planning approval granted to Stronach Property by Newcastle City Council in 2011 to be invalid, as the Crownowned headland in King Edward Park was intended for public recreation, “not as a source of private profit”. Justice Terry Sheahan expressed concern that the function centre element of the design could shut out the public. Friends of King Edward Park spokesperson Kim Ostinga hailed the decision as a win, saying it would set a precedent for public land across the state. Developer Keith Stronach has said he was considering future options for the landmark site. Council and the King Edward Reserve Trust have been ordered to pay Friends of King Edward Park’s legal costs. - Amelia Parrott

news Cessnock welcomes new citizens

Bridge out of action for 12 months Cessnock motorists using Frame Drive at Abermain as a shortcut to the Hunter Expressway will need to find an alternative route, with the wooden bridge connecting the suburbs of Weston and Sawyers Gully now out of action for at least 12 months due to damage from the recent storm. Previous assessments of Frame Drive Bridge by Cessnock City Council in late 2014 identified severe damage to a number of structural elements with a load limit, height restriction and alternate route signage placed on the bridge. A further assessment in the wake of last month’s storm resulted in the bridge’s closure. “We understand the closure is inconvenient to motorists and residents, particularly as a key route into Cessnock from the Hunter Expressway but we need the community to understand safety comes first,” Council’s director of works and infrastructure Justin Fitzpatrick-Barr said. “Mitigating public risk is at the forefront of any road or bridge closure. It would be irresponsible to place undue risk on motorists by ignoring the facts given to us by experts.” Council has been in ongoing discussions

with Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) to discuss issues stemming from the opening of the Hunter Expressway—including significant traffic increase and the subsequent impact on Frame Drive and in particular the bridge. The timeframe for replacement of Frame Drive Bridge depends heavily on state funding being made available, with Council advising commuters should expect the bridge to be closed for a minimum 12-month period assuming funding is made available in the immediate future. The preliminary cost estimate to upgrade Frame Drive Bridge to a two lane concrete bridge—with an adjoining pedestrian path and associated road works and service relations is in the order of $3.9 million. Meanwhile, Mount Sugarloaf Road at Seahampton will also remain closed until further notice after suffering significant damage in the storm event. Lake Macquarie City Council will begin re-construction once investigations and detailed design have been completed and, in the meantime, motorists are asked to avoid the area.

Twelve Cessnock City residents became Australian Citizens in an official citizenship ceremony held at the Council’s chambers last Friday. Cessnock Mayor, Bob Pynsent, oversaw official proceedings with general manager Stephen Glen as MC of the event. The joy was clearly visible on the face of Mrs Nawaphun Sorensen, who exclaimed, “I am finally a true blue Aussie!” in the Council chambers. Mrs Sorensen was joined by her boss, Kurri Kurri restaurant Saree Thai owner Mark Brittain.

NEW WINTER STOCK ARRIVING DAILY

Work has commenced on the $1.5 billion upgrade of Williamtown RAAF Base. Last week Defence Minister Kevin Andrews visited the site to turn the first sod on the project. He said the new facilities would help support the operation and deployment of Australia’s new fleet of F-35A Lightning II – Joint Strike Fighters. “With the first F-35A to arrive in Australia in 2018, these facilities are crucial to realise an operational Joint Strike Fighter capability in 2020,” he said. “The introduction of the F-35A aircraft to RAAF Base Williamtown assures its position as our premier fighter training base for Australia’s air combat pilots.” The new facilities are expected to bring a $950 million boost to the regional economy, with the potential for up to 100 local-subcontractors to be engaged in the project during the construction phase. Federal Member for Newcastle Sharon Claydon said with unemployment levels in the Hunter region at decade-long highs, the project was very much welcomed.

No panic from Knights It’s not quite desperation stakes yet for the Newcastle Knights, but five successive defeats has coach Rick Stone searching for answers to the form slump that has seen his side tumble out of the top eight. “Our line defence is the biggest disappointment and probably has been over the last month with the amount of points we’re letting in,” Stone said. The Knights are one of seven teams on eight competition points but a points differential of -39 sees them sitting in twelfth place on the ladder. One bright spot for the Knights was the performance of Dane Gagai who played fullback as part of a reshuffle following the withdrawal of five-eighth Jarrod Mullen. Regular fullback Kurt Gidley shifted to fiveeighth with Sione Mata’utia taking Gagai’s spot in the centres. Gagai ran for 198 metres – more than any other Knights player. “He looked dangerous and was sharp and continues to compete in whatever position you put him in,” Stone said.

Heroes frontman Pete de Jong

ANOTHER TASTE OF HEROES

The late seventies and early eighties were definitely the halcyon days of rock and roll in Australia and nowhere was this fact more evident than in the prolific Newcastle scene. Even if you only displayed a dilettante’s fancy for the plethora of bands this town had on offer, there’s pretty good chance that you would be familiar with The Heroes.

F

ormed from the ashes of equally seminal Novocastrian glam rockers Rabbit, in 1977, the Heroes quickly became one of the most bankable acts on the local circuit while their appearance at the now infamous Star Hotel riots in 1979 saw their stock rise even further afield and led to their signing to the iconic Albert Productions – a relationship that yielded a self titled album containing the local chart topping singles Baby’s Had a Taste/Waiting for You and The Star and the Slaughter/End of the Road. After laying dormant for more than 30 years, the band returned, in spectacular fashion, earlier this year with album number two, So Far, and a handful of well-received local shows, proving that there’s still plenty of life in the Heroes yet. The band will be heading to Wallsend Diggers this week for another barnburner of a set, but this time around the show, dubbed the Rock Hero Party, will be all for a good cause with all proceeds from the night being donated to the 12

Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation. “We were approached by Diggers a couple of months ago about this show and we were already supportive of that club because we support anyone who supports live music,” frontman Pete de Jong told Newcastle Weekly. “Even though none of us have any direct experience with breast cancer in our families, we have plenty of friends and fans who have so, to us, it is definitely a worthy cause.” While 34 years is definitely a long time between albums, de Jong said there was a definite sense of unfinished business in the Heroes camp. “When the first album came out in ’81 we toured relentlessly up and down the Eastern seaboard and we ended up selling around 20,000 copies, but we had a lot of trouble getting the second album up and most of that was due to internal problems in the band,” he said. “It wasn’t until the band dissolved and I started

a jingle writing business in Sydney with Tinno [Mark Tinson, guitar] where I really started to get the hang of working collaboratively with him. “So it had all been in the back of my mind for a while, but it wasn’t until recently while having coffee with a friend and he suggested we should do the second album and it just seemed like the right time.” While de Jong said there were no plans in the works for a follow-up record, he did not discount the idea of new material hitting the ether in the near future. “The way people consume music has fundamentally changed since we first started so I don’t envisage that we’d go down the album path again but I do suspect that people can expect the odd EP or single online,” he said. If you grew up in the heady days of the 1980s, chances are you spent a fair bit of time in your bedroom singing along to Perth post-punk/indie pop outfit the Eurogliders and, if you were female you were probably doing your best impersonation of frontwoman Grace Knight’s “manic ballerina”. Well, it’s time to start reliving all of those memories as the Eurogliders are back with a new album Don’t Eat the Daisies under their belt and they’ll be making their way to Newcastle this weekend. “We just love coming to Newcastle,” Knight told Newcastle Weekly. “Especially Bernie [Lynch, songwriter] – he tends to go a bit crazy op-shopping at all the wonderful craft and junk shops you have up there.” If you know anything about the Euroglider’s back catalogue you’d know that fun always featured largely in their output and Knight said it was great to see that same sense of fun still evident at shows all these years later. “I may have to take an extra breath between songs nowadays, but it is all about having a ball onstage and it’s also great to see so many people from way back

when who are still dancing right along with us.” Asked what she believed was the secret to the band’s success and continued resonance, Knight had but one word. “Bernie,” she said. “In my opinion he is one of the greatest songwriters in the country, I mean those songs were written 20 or 30 years ago and they still sound fresh and relevant – that’s all testament to Bernie’s ability as a songwriter.” While most of their contemporaries might be content with resting on past glories, the Eurogliders are showing no signs of slowing down with their first album in ten years released last year and plans for more material to follow. “We really wanted to reintroduce ourselves to everyone so we decided to re-record some of our biggest hits along with some new stuff,” she said. “With the record we tried to step away from the 80s synth-heavy sound and went for something a little bit more stripped back and slightly folky, which definitely presents the old material in a new light.” Eurogliders – Wests, New Lambton, Sunday, May 17. $38.00 members/$43.00 non-members.

Judy has a passion for community development and uses every opportunity to get out into the community and raise awareness around responsible gambling. In partnership with Warruwi Gambling Help, Judy organised an Aboriginal community art competition with the theme of gambling. This was a great success and the three winning entries are now proudly displayed in our centre.

DO YOU OR ANYONE YOU CARE ABOUT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH GAMBLING? Many people gamble at one time or another. For most people gambling is fun, entertaining and a chance to win a bit of money. If gambling has stopped being fun and started to feel like a problem, this service can help. We can assist if your gambling has become harmful to you or hurting those close to you. If you want to check whether you have a gambling problem ask yourself: “Am I always in control of how much I spend on gambling?” or “Is the time and money I spend on gambling hurting anyone else?” It’s important to know how severe gambling problems can become: • Losing money is not fun nor is having to lie to family and friends to cover your losses; • Money issues become a consuming thought; • Increased debt delays the disaster but makes the drive to gamble stronger; • Work performance and attendance can suffer; • Family, friends and relationships are affected.

Free Confidential, Face-to-Face Counselling available now. Contact Lake Macquarie Gambling Help and Financial Counselling Service p. 4950 5108 or e. lmfgc@wnc.ngo.org.au i. www.woodrisingnc.org.au

time out IT’S NOT SO DIFFICULT FOR THESE GUYS It may’ve been a little while between drinks for The Main Guy and the Other Guys, with their last local show on New Year’s Eve, but Newcastle’s heartiest partiers will be redressing that balance when they descend on their favourite local haunt – the Lass O’Gowrie for the launch of their second release, The Not So Difficult Second EP. “It is very exciting to be dusting off the cobwebs, as we haven’t played in Newcastle for a little while now,” main guy Erling ‘the Duke’ Gronhaug told Newcastle Weekly. “We have been off the radar for a little while, but we’ve still been quite busy - we spent last year gigging pretty hard to get the money together to record the new EP which is a nice mixture of some older tracks and some brand new ones.”

While Gronhaug said that there will be copies of the EP available on the night, it will be primarily a digital-only release. “We’re not really going down the route of making a bunch of CDs but rather, we’ll be putting it up on Bandcamp and places like iTunes if necessary, although, we have printed

You’ve heard the sonic boom of Noiseworks and INXS; the dramatic versatility of Judas in the blockbuster ‘90s version of Jesus Christ Superstar; the alternately tender and tearing voice of his solo albums; his powerhouse work with John Farnham, the Black Sorrows and, more recently with the international supergroup The Dead Daisies. won’t be hitting the promotional touring treadmill for this release, preferring, rather to use the songs on the EP as a basis to make some really great videos - and if you’ve seen their clips for songs such as Partyhard, The Party Is Over and The Stalker, you’d know these guys give good footage. “It’s difficult for us to tour because we all have so much going on in our lives,” he said. “The video clips have always been a big part of what we do and I think it’s a really fun and interesting way to connect with the audience.” Main Guy and the Other Guys EP Launch – Lass O’Gowrie Hotel, Friday, May 15. JAQUES HITS HORROR HEIGHTS Former Lake Macquarie actress Allira Jaques is certainly making a name for herself in the horror genre, starring alongside some true legends of the genre in her latest feature, the Australian slasher flick Charlie’s Farm. After piquing quite a bit of interest on the Australian festival circuit when released last year, the film, which also stars Tara Reid (American Pie, Sharknado), Australian man mountain Nathan Jones (who will soon be seen in Mad Max: Fury Road) and genre icons Kane Hodder (Friday the 13th series, Hatchet) and Bill Mosely (the Devil’s Rejects), will be released on Blu Ray and DVD next month. “We did an Australian tour at the end of last year and went to some really great film festivals and the reception was really positive,” Jaques told Newcastle Weekly. “It’s exciting to see the film get

a DVD release so even more true horror fans can enjoy it.” Shot in Queensalnd, Charlie’s Farm is a classic slasher flick in the vein of Friday the 13th, Halloween and Hatchet and Jaques plays Melissa, one of four young adventurists who are heading out on a camping trip to the infamous Charlie’s Farm – an abandoned farmhouse rumored to be the location of a series of grisly murders decades earlier. “It was just so much fun to shoot,” she said. “It was just great working with Tara – she is such a nice person and I learnt so much from her and we’ve actually become friends which is nice. “I also did all my own stunts in the film which was a little scary but so much fun.” “This is also my third film with Chris [Day, director] so there is

quite a bit of trust there because we both started out together and have learnt together.” Jaques, who grew up in Boolaroo and whose credits also include spots on the ABC drama Rake and horror flicks Daddy’s Little Girl and Come and Get Me has recently relocated to Los Angeles to pursue her acting career more vigorously, adding that she was keen to break out of the horror genre. ‘I’ve been over here for four months now and it’s been going really well – lots of auditions,” she said. “It was difficult in the beginning as I’ve got no friends or family over here and it’s basically like starting from scratch, which is a little scary but also great.” Charlie’s Farm is released on June 17 - Stephen Bisset

When did you first know you wanted to be a professional artist? I’m still working on that bit. I’ve got a job I really love, teaching Photomedia at the Newcastle Art School, so often work takes precedence, but I’m lucky I’m in a creative field which I can draw inspiration from for my own practice. Describe your work Not so long ago, I would have just answered photography, but more and more lately I would describe my work as multimedia. I use the written word or experiences and, from there, I create both still and video-based works that often include sound and text. What inspires you?

What has been your greatest achievement? Right now, it’s the fact that I’m here and still standing, working, studying and creating. I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2011 and I really feel like I’ve made my way through a difficult and uncertain time. I’m well and am maintaining it. What would be your advice for budding artists? I’ve been saying to students at TAFE lately to write “to-do” lists in their visual art diaries. You can’t do everything at once and if you don’t write them all down you’ll either forget all your wonderful ideas or you’ll become so overwhelmed by all of the ideas that you don’t do any of them! ROOTS ROCKER RETURNS

Marshall Okell in action Photo: Heidi Flumm Photography

Roots rocker Marshall Okell grew up on the NSW Far North Coast area of Byron Bay and was aptly named after two of music’s greatest rock and bluesmen (Jimi ‘Marshall’ Hendrix and Johnny ‘Dawson’ Winter). After cutting his teeth on his father’s Hendrix, Johnny Winter, Muddy Waters, Little Feat and AC/ DC records, Okell formed his first band, the Immortal Flames at age 11, as well as couple of hard rock and punk outfits, before becoming well known for his lead in the group Marshall and the Fro. The band released two albums and an EP between 2005 and 2010 and cut a swathe through the Australian touring circuit before Okell stepped out from behind the safety net of the band in 2011, releasing his third record and first true solo release, Birdy in 2012.

MAY ENTERTAINMENT FRI 15TH:

He’s just too hip, baby

With years of playing now under his belt, Okell has made a notable return to the music of his youth with his fourth, as-yet-untitled new album. The result is a deep, raw, honest, dirty blues sound that grabs you by the throat and then sooths you with a sweet honey tasting musical medicine. There are pure guts, sweat and emotion in his latest material that leave you exhausted and elated in their wake. No stranger to Newcastle, Okell will be making his way back to one of his favourite local haunts, the Wicko this Saturday night as well as backing up at the Grand Junction on Sunday, so punters can expect to hear a fair slab of new material. Marshall Okell, the Wickham Park Hotel, Saturday, May 16 and the Grand Junction Hotel, Maitland, Sunday, May 17.

GREG BRYCE

SAT 16TH:

Australia’s undisputed king of sartorial cool, Dave Graney, will be making a welcome return to Newcastle and the Royal Exchange Theatre later this month. Hot on the heels of his second solo album Fearful Wiggings, released last year, Graney is back with a new album with his outfit the Mistly – Clare Moore, Stuart Parera and Stu Thomas - Play Mistly For Me. Play Mistly for Me is a collection of live recordings from shows in Adelaide, Katoomba, Newcastle and Melbourne over the last few years. It was recorded on a hard disc recorder sitting in the rooms where they played with no direct feeds from a desk or mics on any instruments, just a stereo track from somewhere in the room. There were no overdubs attempted. It’s all here just as it happened. Dave Graney, Royal Exchange Theatre, Sunday, May 31.

FILM REVIEW

Kurt Cobain at the MTV Unplugged sessions, 1993.

It may’ve been more than 20 years since Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain shuffled off this mortal coil, but there’s no denying that the influence his music and personality had on the world of popular music can still be felt today as evidenced in

this intimate and poignant portrait of the ‘grunge’ superstar by director Brett Morgen (Crossfire Hurricane, The Kid Stays in the Picture). The film is essentially a traditional chronological retelling of Cobain’s story – from his days as a burgeoning

While not as exhaustive as other music docos like Julien Temple’s Sex Pistols study The Filth and the Fury or Bradley Beesley’s brilliant Flaming Lips doco The Fearless Freaks, Montage of Heck still does a good job of getting behind all wof the smoke and mirrors to find the real Kurt Cobain. Verdict: An intimate and at times poignant portrait of the father of grunge.

Aussie Rebel Wilson reprises her role as Fat Amy, staring alongside Anna Kendrick, Brittney Snow and the rest of the Bellas in what is one of the most hotly anticipated sequels of the year. After an onstage wardrobe malfunction sees Fat Amy reveal her lady parts to President Obama and the First Lady, reigning a capella champions the Barden Bellas are suspended from the US competition circuit. Unable to defend their national title, the girls decide to take on the big guns in the international competition, despite the fact that an American group has never won. The fun of Pitch Perfect 2 is in the ensemble cast. Kendrick’s subtle comic delivery, Wilson’s bold, brash humour, unlikely cameos from the Green Bay Packers and Snoop

Mitch Capone and the Wise Guys in action

SWING WHEN YOU’RE WINNING If you like your tunes with more than just a hint of bold brass and swinging swagger, then you’d do well to pick up a copy of local outfit Mitch Capone and the Wise Guys debut long player Bad Blood. Featuring the dulcet tones of Capone on vocals and backed up

expertly by the tried and tested talents of Mark Tinson on guitar, Rob Banks o bass and Steve “Mac” McLennan on drums and a formidable horn section of Andy Firth, Leigh Sherringham and John Kellaway, the Wise Guys revel in the revisionist sound of 1950s swing and rockabilly but, with Bad Blood, bring something decidedly fresh to the table – fusing big band swing arrangements with dirty rockabilly and boogie to create something that Capone has dubbed swingbilly. After tearing up the floor at Wallsend Diggers with The Heroes on Friday Night at the Rock Hero party, Mitch and the boys will be doing it all again on Sunday at SJs. So get your best dancing shoes on and get along to see what swingabilly is all about. Mitch Capone and the Wise Guys, Sydney Junction Hotel, Sunday, May 17

MAY STAR

A BIRD ON THE WING After 25 years as the honey-voiced singer of The Blackeyed Susans, Rob Snarski has released his debut solo album, Wounded Bird. Produced by Rob and longtime bandmate Dan Luscombe, Wounded Bird foregoes the lush arrangements of The Blackeyed Susans for a stripped-back and intimate sound palette - think Ricky Nelson meets Mazzy Star or the Everly Brothers if they’d been raised on a diet of Big Star’s Third. Featuring a cotiere of formidably talented musicians including Luscombe, JP Shilo and Phil Kakulas from the Blackeyed Susans as well as Clare Moore (vibes), Bruce Haymes (keys), and Ashley Davies (drums), the result is a beautifully sparse album that finds joy in the spaces in between. Themes of love rejected or betrayed play out across the album. The characters wounded by the madness of everyday life. There’s Henry Small - who sets sail on a sea of alcohol through

the neon streets of a careless city; and Johnny Only a man from ‘a different generation’ coming out ‘in a not-so-different world.’ They travel through the wintry landscapes of It Starts With Snow and Engine Driver in search of redemption. Finding it, at least momentarily, in the summery pleasures of Temperature’s Rising, which hints at the hope of renewal and the destructive forces inherent in the heat. Since the album’s release, Snarski has played to packed houses around the country. The album and their live performances have connected with fans and critics alike. Recently, music fans voted Wounded Bird the Australian Album of 2014 in the RRR Off The Record Listeners’ end of year poll and his Melbourne album launch show with an all star band in July – was voted Best Australian Gig Of 2014 Rob Snarski, Lizotte’s Lambton, Thursday, June 4.

Love Tree's dessert tasting plate.

FROM LITTLE THINGS BIG THINGS GROW

T

ucked away from the hustle and bustle of Beaumont Street’s vibrant café and restaurant scene, Love Tree Café may be a relative newcomer, having only opened its doors a little over twelve months ago, but they are definitely in the running for this reviewer’s favourite Newcastle restaurant. As soon as you set foot inside Love Tree Café, the bright and airy décor and truly pleasant and helpful wait-staff create a welcoming atmosphere that, when coupled with a truly amazing menu, makes dining at Love Tree an experience that is almost guaranteed to live long in the memory. Wanting to dive straight into the delectable selection of mains created by head chef Brendon Storey, I decided on the crispy-skin chicken stuffed with chorizo and feta in a basic cream sauce and was in no way disappointed. The chicken, cooked to absolute perfection, was moist and juicy while the skin was full of flavour and, most importantly, crispy – deliciously crispy. The stuffing of chorizo and feta added a complex depth of flavour to the

dish, while the basil cream sauce truly took this dish to the next level. Love Tree always make the most of seasonal produce and my dining partner’s phenomenal pork fillet stuffed with mushroom and sage butter with beetroot, fennel and goats cheese was no exception. From the delicious little new potatoes, to the rich roast beetroot and showcased with the warming, fragrant fennel - the veg on this plate hint that winter is knocking at the door. The crowning glory of this dish, though, is most definitely the pork fillet. Coming to the table you may be forgiven for thinking it's simply a nicely plated "meat and three veg" and maybe that's true, but with such simple ingredients there is no room for error, and this plate held nothing but tender perfection. Everything on this plate played an important role in the overall meal. The beetroot was sweet, soft and rich, the fennel well-caramelised and the goats cheese gave the palate refreshing zest and creaminess that tied everything together beautifully.

One of the things that Love Tree consistently “gets right” is the desserts and, the delectable tasting plate – a beguiling selection of the entire dessert menu - that we sampled was just out of this world, made even more impressive by the fact that it was prepared by the first year apprentice Satina Cooper. Looking at this delicate collection of confections – saffron panna cotta with a Sambuca and berry sauce, a salted caramel and chocolate lava cake, poached pear with red wine syrup, and checkerboard cheesecake with chocolate chess pieces – the only word that sprang to mind was "wow". The pear was perfectly poached, the pana cotta a silken, creamy decadence, the lava cake an oozing, gooey triumph and possibly one of the best desserts I’ve ever eaten, and the pink and white checkerboard cheesecake was a whimsical delight with the finely tempered chocolate chess pieces almost inviting you to pick them up for a game. If you’re looking for a truly out of this world dining experience that is high on flavour and low on pretence, Love Tree Café is an absolute must.

ALLERGY FREE DELIGHTS Australia has one of the highest incidences of food allergy in the world, but during this year’s Food Allergy Week (May 17 – 23) it’s important to remember that living with food allergies doesn’t mean you

have to live without sampling some great recipes, bursting with flavour! To that end, here are two delicious allergy-friendly recipes from 4 Ingredients Allergies by Kim McCosker.

Sale starts Saturday 9/5/15 and ends Saturday 23/5/15

Mustard Glazed Roast Beef Serves 4 2kg beef topside 2 tablespoons (60g) raw honey 2 tablespoons (40g) allergy-free wholegrain mustard

Saturday 16th May only Special SPECIAL

Preheat oven to 220°C. Trim most of the fat from the piece of beef. Mix together the raw honey and mustard and brush over the roast in a thick layer. Place in a roasting tray and bake for 15 minutes, reduce the temperature to 180°C and continue to cook for 1 to 1 ½ hours for medium, or until done to your liking.

$

Limit of 4 per customer

Serves 4 100g dried apple, chopped 12 dried dates, pitted and chopped 8 allergy-free spring roll wrappers 1⁄2 cup (125ml) vegetable oil

Soak chopped apple and dates in boiling water until tender. Drain off liquid and refrigerate to cool. Place a generous tablespoon full of date and apple mixture on a spring roll wrapper and roll, fold in the sides and fold again. Heat the oil in a frying pan and shallow fry the rolls until nice and golden, turning throughout. Dust with allergy-free icing sugar to serve (optional, but pretty!).

Wellness Tip These are just delicious, you can alter the flavour by alternating the fillings. Kids love banana and cinnamon, mango and coconut drizzled with pure maple syrup and a mixture of chopped banana and mango sprinkled with brown sugar. Yummy!

FOOD FOR THOUGHT All the latest foodie news… 5 ways with leeks Like garlic and onion, leeks are a) a member of the Allium family of vegetables and b) delicious in just about anything. When cooked, their flavor is onion-like, but subtler and sweeter. Two-thirds of the leek is white and firm– this is the best part for eating– and the remaining third should be bright green, crisp leaves

which will usually be discarded. And while there’s no denying that leeks are a superb addition to soup, they’re also incredibly versatile. Here’s five ways to include leeks in your week: 1. In quiches and tarts, leeks are a delicately sweet and nutritious addition 2. Use leeks in your next pasta

sauce – the flavour pairs nicely with Portobello mushrooms and white wine 3. Sauté chopped leeks in olive oil with salt and pepper for 3 minutes, then add to pizza and bake 4. Add sliced leeks to the pan next time you’re making a roast 5. Toss in some sliced leeks when you’re boiling green beans for a delicate, healthy side-dish

Naturally Nood If you’ve run out of ideas for school lunchboxes or work snacks, look no further. A new range of wholefoods bars by Naturally Nood have hit the shelves. The ‘smoosh’d’ bars are made from nuts, dried and fresh fruits– there are no added sugars, preservatives or mysterious

numbers on the ingredients list. From the Berrylicious bar, to a decadent Cocoa Lamington variety, Naturally Nood bars are an ideal, healthy mid-afternoon pick me up. Available from most major supermarkets. naturallynood.com

APPLICATION ADVICE 1. Choose a colour that suits your complexion: pale skin looks great in bright peach; medium or olive skin, choose neon colours; and dark skin tones suit shades of violet. Almost any skin tones will suit fuchsia, blood red and bright orange-red. 2. Keep the rest of your makeup simple but highlight your eyes with liner and a double coat of mascara to balance the look. 3. Apply with care: begin by outlining your lip with concealer to stop the colour smudging, then carefully pat on the colour using your fingertip. 4. Go for matte over gloss – bright, shiny lips can be too much so keep things elegant by choosing a matte finish.

HELP YOUR KIDS AND GRANDKIDS SAVE FOR THEIR FUTURE Teaching kids about the value of money and benefits of saving is vital for their future. Experts agree that encouraging kids to start saving early and giving pocket money help kids to be savers for life. Yet research conducted by Greater Building Society shows less than two thirds (63 per cent) of parents give their children pocket money and just under half (48 per cent) help their kids to open a bank account before they are 10. The Greater says its new LifeSaver account makes it easier for under 25s to

save by paying high interest provided the account balance grows. Once parents or grandparents are comfortable, the young person can link it to a Greater everyday account with no transaction or account keeping fees until they are 25. To find out more visit www.greater.com.au or visit a Greater branch today.

Enter to WIN Newcastle Weekly has three $50 Greater Building Society LifeSaver accounts to be won. To enter, email editorial@newcastleweekly.com.au with ‘Greater’ in the subject field. PICK OF THE WEEK The Five-Year Engagement Sunday, 7MATE, 9.30pm, MA15+ (2012) Jason Segel reunites with Forgetting Sarah Marshall director Nicholas Stoller for a far more relatable romantic comedy that still trades on the pair’s signature raunchy humour. Segel and Emily Blunt (pictured) play Tom and Violet, a young couple who keep getting tripped up on their long walk down the aisle. If it’s not their busy careers nixing their nuptials, it’s their kooky friends and family thwarting their plans. The Five-Year Engagement is a heartfelt union that audiences will want to get behind.

Friday

The Heat

Gangster Squad Monday, GO!, 9.30pm, AV15+ (2013) The Untouchables it isn’t, but if you’re looking for a slick, violent, silly but generally enjoyable thriller, then this is for you. Set in Los Angeles in 1949, mobster Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) tries to take over the city with his drugs empire. It falls to a few honest cops, including sergeant John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) and sergeant Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling, pictured) to save the city using any means necessary. Although the script leaves a bit to be desired, the action scenes don’t disappoint.

Saturday, TEN, 8.40pm, M (2013) Melissa McCarthy’s free-wheeling brand of humour and Sandra Bullock’s (pictured) understated physical comedy are perfectly matched in this odd-couple cop movie, even if it’s not laugh-out-loud funny. FBI special agent Sarah Ashburn (Bullock) is uptight, clean-cut and gets her crooks by the book. Boston cop Shannon Mullins (McCarthy) prefers to rough them up and scare the bejeezus out of them with a few jabs to the ribs. Both are top cops but work best on their own, so when they are paired to bring down a ruthless drug lord, it starts badly and gets worse fast.

On the career front it is important that Sam doesn’t let intense pride get in his way of asking for help. No matter how confident he may feel, there’s no harm in asking for a second opinion. Success is written in his stars, he just has to play to win.

CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 20

The New Moon on the 18th puts you firmly in control. You’ll be able to deal with everything from the big picture on the money front to the smallest details in daily life. Career or personal plans might be sound, but will benefit from a second look before signing off.

The New Moon on the 18th is the ideal time for fun outings, as they will give you reasons to exercise your sense of humour and you’ll also get to meet some truly interesting people. Many Cancerians have been a tad too touchy lately and need to make up and play nice with their family and friends.

The 18 May New Moon indicates that it doesn't matter what other people say and do, you will be able to see straight through them. There is a successful new chapter starting in your money zone, so play things right and you will prosper!

The 18 May New Moon indicates that you need to be prepared for the unexpected as favours you have done for others will now be returned to you. An interest might become quite intense but don’t allow this intensity to kill the joy of actually doing it.

SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 22

AQUARIUS JAN 21 – FEB 19

The New Moon on the 18th is the ideal time to think about your love life and to spoil those who mean the most to you! A purchase or expense you've been preparing for will still be a stretch but there'll be personal satisfaction in reaching your goal.

The New Moon on the 18th is the ideal time to start a new domestic project and to spoil the family. It is important that you weigh up how much you want to be there for your friends and how much you need to look after yourself.

SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21

The New Moon on 18 May indicates that a short break out of your ordinary routine will do you wonders. Beautifying your home with new possessions or a working bee will bring special joys and a family occasion will be an opportunity to deepen meaningful connections.

The 18 May New Moon falls directly in your own sign and it's time to sort your money matters out and to make some good cash! Throughout the coming year you'll start to see life very differently and discover new priorities. Compromise will achieve the best outcomes.

GEMINI MAY 22 – JUNE 21 The New Moon on 18 May is an ideal time to have a serious talk with a loved one and to allow your intuition to clue you in on the bigger picture. A domestic project might be progressing slowly, but paying attention to detail will be worth it.

LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23 The New Moon on 18 May is the ideal time to impress the boss with your expertise. Balancing your leadership skills with cooperation will require recognising what is yours to manage and what is someone else's responsibility. Be careful of getting into power struggles with loved ones.

VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23 The New Moon on the 18th is an ideal time for fun adventures and a long distance relationship will have a fresh lease of life. This is also the ideal month to start all over again when it comes to your career - it's never too late for a change.

BAR BEACH “I like all the beaches around Newcastle and any time I get a chance to head down there is great. Bar Beach would have to be my favourite.”

My favourite things Kurt Fearnley WHEELCHAIR RACING CHAMPION

He may have been born and raised in western NSW, but here in the Hunter we are more than happy to claim four-time Paralympian, Kurt Fearnley as one of own. Fearnley was at home in Hamilton when Newcastle Weekly caught up with him for a chat, but with the majority of the big-ticket races overseas, he will soon be jetting off again. “I’ll be spending most of June and July in the United States for some second-tier events,” he said. “After that my races will be the Chicago Marathon in October and then the New York Marathon in November.”

WHEELCHAIR RACING “What started off as a hobby has now turned into my job. I spend about 40 hours a week training in my racing wheelchair.”

- Paul Monforte

SUSHI

“I really like listening to music. I used to enjoy playing Xbox but find that I don’t have a lot of time for it these days.”

MUSIC

“It seems to be everyone’s favourite food these days. I’ve spent a fair bit of time in Japan and I just love the freshness of sushi.”
