This week... From the editor It was fantastic to see the history of the BHP steelworks celebrated earlier this week with a ceremony to mark the 100th anniversary of its opening. As someone who did not grow up in this region, it has been very interesting to learn just what a huge part the company played in many lives. I don’t think it is too much of a stretch to say that almost everybody in the Hunter either worked for the steelworks themselves or had a family member or friend that did. Although BHP has long since departed Newcastle, it is very important to keep the memories alive. It was quite troubling to hear longtime BHP employee Aubrey Brooks speaking on radio, lamenting the fact that a group of 13-year-old students he recently spoke to had never heard of the steelworks. If you are looking for something to do over the long weekend, it will be well worth heading to Nelson Bay and surrounds for the Blue Water Country and Blues Music Festival. We were very happy to have one of the headline acts, Catherine Britt, pop in to our office for a photo and a chat. She’s a proud Novocastrian and we wish her well in her quest to establish herself in the US market.

Opening day at the BHP Steelworks in 1915.

Arrium (Onesteel) machinist, Fred Oblaffer, working on the three-tonne steel bloom which holds the time capsule in the BHP Steelworks commemoration

Generations of steelmakers 100th anniversary of the opening of BHP Newcastle site or over 80 years the BHP Steelworks site was like a city of its own, comprised of over 12,000 people each department had its own sense of family. Hundreds of people gathered at the site this Tuesday, June 2 to mark the centenary of the official opening and to unveil the memorial statue to pay tribute to the lives lost. As you looked around the grounds you couldn’t help but notice old friends shaking hands, families gathered to support each other, and that most of the crowd was comprised of former steelworks employees. Speakers at the event included former

steelworks general manager John (‘Jack’) Risby, who spoke about the past and what Newcastle would have been like if BHP hadn’t come to town. “The saying was - If you need it, make it, or go without, and to go without is not an option,” Mr Risby said. Mark van den Heuvel, Acting Asset President at BHP Billiton was also present, proud to be representing as a third generation steelworker. As the congregation sauntered over to the memorial statue, sounds of bagpipes played The Lament while Very Reverend, Stephen Williams,

Dean of Newcastle, delivered a blessing around the statue created by blacksmith, Will Maguire. Keith Lowe, who can vividly recall the exact date he started work at the plant, December 7th 1960 when he was just 15 years old, as an electrical apprentice. “Yep I followed in my grandfathers footsteps, he was an operator in one of the mills here,” he said. “I loved every minute of it! I loved getting dirty, I loved being called out at two o’clock in the morning for a breakdown and I loved that overtime pay,” Mr Lowe smiled. Talking of the satisfaction of doing a good job, and the pride he had felt when he was put in charge of looking after the oxygen plant. “As far as I could see that was mine. That’s how I treated it; it turned out to be quite successful.” After losing his job at the plant, Mr Lowe started his own business in massage therapy which he compares as: “It’s still like working on machines, people have problems you need to help fix them.” The ceremony concluded with NIHA President Bob Cook and Vice President Aubrey Brooks standing around a three-tonne steel bloom time capsule, made from steel produced at the site and encases various memorabilia of old and new. The capsule is to be retrieved on June 2, 2065. - Kayla Stephenson

With the launch of the Youth Mentoring program, students making use of the accommodation service will now have access to mentors who can provide them with advice, guidance, friendship as well as motivation and connections in the wider community. The mentors, who are aged over 30, must be prepared to commit for 12 months and be available to spend a minimum of an hour a fortnight with their mentee, thus building a relationship of trust and friendship, while also providing them with support and encouragement outside of the system. “Just knowing that people care about you and are concerned about you, which genuinely want to see you succeed.” The program was launched through events such as The Bean Counters Ball, with local chartered accountants raising more than

Heading into the match without Kurt Gidley, Kade Snowden and Jeremy Smith, the Knights lost halfback Tyrone Roberts with an ankle injury after just five minutes. “If we can continue to play with that sort of effort and determination, and can handle the ball and kick a bit better, then things will happen for us,” Stone said. LEITH’S GLASS IS HALF FULL fter capturing Australia’s hearts on Australian Idol in 2006, Damien Leith has definitely eclipsed his early reality TV star persona, with eight studio albums, two novels and an ARIA and Helpmann award under his belt. Leith recently released his eighth long player, Songs of Ireland – a beguiling set of songs from the Emerald Isle that celebrates the singer’s heritage and is also kicking goals round the country with his critically acclaimed one-man cabaret play – The Parting Glass: An Irish Journey.

“A couple of years ago, I wrote The Parting Glass and it debuted at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival and the reception was really good, so I thought it would be good to test the waters on the road, and so far, the response has been really overwhelming,” he said. “It’s basically a musical play that takes place in

an Irish pub and I play both a father and son who come together in the pub for a few drinks and a catch up. It’s a real rousing Irish experience with a full live band playing traditional instruments and some great songs like Danny Boy and Rocky Road to Dublin which I have just loved for years.” Leith’s latest album features collaborations with Sharon Corr on the track Black Is The Colour, Sharon Shannon from the Waterboys on Galway Girl and, thanks to some technological wizardry, with the late, great Bing Crosby on Galway Bay. “Being able to record a duet with Bing Crosby is something that will always stand up as one of my fondest memories,” he said. fter discovering a gift to reveal the future and communicate with the spirit world as a child, Sally Morgan has parlayed her gift into quite a successful career. Having done readings for the likes of Princess Diana, George Michael, Katie Price and Natalie Imbruglia, and as the author of three bestselling books as well as being the star of numerous TV series and documentaries, Morgan has become one of the best-known seers in the UK. Morgan will be returning to Newcastle later this month, showcasing her phenomenal ability to speak with people beyond the grave and she told Newcastle Weekly that Australia was always a welcome locale on an itinerary that sees her perform around 130 shows a year. “This will be my second working trip to Australia but, on a personal level, I’ve been down there 18 times – I just love it,” she said. “In fact, when I finally say ‘I don’t want to work any more’, I’d love to move to Australia because I’ve always been fascinated with geology since I was a little girl, and Australia is a great place to indulge that passion.” Having first noticing her gift, which Morgan said she inherited from her grandmother Gladys, at the tender age of four, she added it wasn’t until years later that she realised that not everyone had the ability to communicate with spirits.

“It wasn’t until I was around 13 years old that I began to realise that I had something quite unique and special,” she said. “I eventually became a nurse and was giving readings in my spare time before I gave up nursing to become a full-time medium. “It was kind of a word of mouth thing - I’d do a reading for someone at the local supermarket and then all of the checkout girls would come in for one and it built like that. I never did any advertising and the whole thing grew quite organically. “I was eventually introduced to Princess Diana and did readings for her for four years and suddenly I was being approached by movie, TV and music stars and the rest, as they say is history. “Never in a million years did I ever think that a dumpy little housewife from the suburbs would be where I am today.” So, is there anyone that Morgan hasn’t done a reading for that she’d dearly love to? “There are so many”, she said. “I’m really fascinated by how people get to positions of power to the extent of running countries so, any head of state would be fantastic, but also, on a personal level, I’d love to get inside the mind of someone like George Clooney – who wouldn’t?” Sally Morgan – Wests, New Lambton – Tuesday, June 16 - Stephen Bisset

I actually had a full band last year, but this year they are doing a bit more stripped back – it will be just me and Bill Chambers on guitar and my bass player, Andy.” With Boneshaker gaining more and more traction, Britt said touring the album would keep her pretty busy for the forseeable future, but there are a couple more projects also vying for her attention. “We’re touring for the rest of this year,” she said. “I’m getting married on October, so a lot of my planning when I’m not touring is going into that. We’re going to go away for a couple of months after that on honeymoon before Tamworth starts up again. “As far as long-term, we’re going to go over to Nashville in March or April next year and set-up over there. I go back and forth, but we’re going to buy a place over there. Now that we’ve bought a

relocated from Newcastle to the US in 2012 – the result being the nine-track album, replete with March’s trademark folk and soul blend Love Castle Dreams. “It does make it a bit easier given that I have done it before, but when I went to the States I booked a return flight whereas there’s no return flight for the UK trip so, I could be over there for six months or I could come back in six years with four kids – who knows? The point is, I figured that I’m still in my 20s so why not have a crack?” - Daniel March – Lizotte’s Lambton, Thursday, June 11.

aving released his first single in two years – the layered and beautifully textured Nina – former Novocastrian singer-songwriter Daniel March will be making one last trip to Lizotte’s next week before packing up stamps and trying his luck over in the UK. “I’ve basically got a working Visa for two years so, I figured it was a great opportunity to head over there and see what could happen,” March told Newcastle Weekly. “It’s basically the next step of the process of me progressing as a songwriter and a human being.” While the idea of starting afresh in a new country would be trepedatious for any muso, the UK move is made that much more palatable given the fact that March

Easts SPIN THE BLACK CIRCLE ver the last few years, there’s no doubt that there has been a massive resurgence in the popularity of vinyl. It comes as no surprise, then that Novocastrian tune fanciers love their little black circles as well, and if you’ve checked out any of the previous Hunter Record Fairs - one of the most exhaustive and eclectic fairs of its kind in the region, you’d know this statement to be true. Now in its fourth iteration, this year’s fair will see stallholders from around the country descending on Mayfield

Bowling Club on Saturday, June 13 offering a mammoth range of both new and second-hand vinyl, CDs, books and DVDs. It doesn’t matter if you’re into Slayer or Springsteen – Grateful Dead or Green Day as all major musical groups will be represented on the day. So, if you’re after some platters that matter, or black wax in stacks or even in racks, get along to the Hunter Record Fair to grab some sonic bargains. - Hunter Record Fair – Saturday, June 13 from 9am-4pm, Mayfield Bowling Club.

FILM REVIEW: San Andreas f you go into Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s latest big budget disaster blockbuster expecting nothing more than a special effects heavy hour and a half of watching big things get destroyed, you’ll find San Andreas a relatively pleasing distraction. However, if it’s something resembling more than a wafer-thin plot or even likable characters, you will more than likely be left wanting. Johnson stars as an LA Fire Department search and rescue chopper pilot who is

escorting his daughter to her first week of college. Johnson’s plans are thrown asunder when a massive earthquake destroys Hoover Dam and his rescue team is called in to rescue survivors. As more quakes rip apart the San Andreas faultline, Johnson decides to go on a solo mission to save his estranged family with basically no thought to any of the other survivors – which given the nature of his job, seemed a little selfish and odd. That said, the special effects are simply

Foghorn brewer Shawn Sherlock inspects the amber fruits of his labour

taste

FOGHORN’S CRAFTY BREWS A HIT After perfecting his trade as head brewer at Murrays Craft Brewing Co, Shawn Sherlock is getting crafty with his latest venture. here’s no denying that the craft beer scene has grown exponentially in Newcastle over the past five years and now, the city has its very own on-site brewery to call its own – FogHorn Brewhouse. Based on the American ‘brewpub’ model, FogHorn features an 1800- litre Brewery and serves a range of Belgian-inspired beers poured fresh from four 1800-litre serving tanks. Aside from the beer the 250-seat restaurant also serves up a range of American-style pizzas, by the slice or tray, burgers and New York deli-style sandwiches like the iconic pastrami Rueben. Sherlock, a self-confessed brewing obsessive started tinkering with the amber fluid more than 20 years ago, concocting his own brews at home before parlaying that early passion into a career as both brewer and head brewer at Murray’s Craft Brewing Company – during which time he was awarded the Australian Brewer of the Year award. “The whole philosophy behind Foghorn is to produce top-quality beers, served fresh and you can’t get more fresh than drinking it straight from the brewery taps,” he said.

With a revolving tap list that almost demand repeat visits – Foghorn currently serves up fullflavoured pale ales (The Foggy Brew), a crisp Summer Ale, a rich and heady UK-inspired porter (Revolution Brown Porter), the Belgianinspired Belgio Blonde Ale, the assertive bitter tones of the Extra Extra Special Bitter and the fresh, hoppy and earthy tones of the Braveheart IPA. There is also room for a bit of humour at Foghorn with their Better Than James Brown Ale and there are also plans to tap their latest IPA in the very near future – the Boganaire, named after infamous former Newcastle Jets owner Nathan Tinkler. “It’s all about having a little bit of fun with the flavours and the way we present them,” Sherlock said. “Also, because FogHorn is also about creating a friendly, family atmosphere - it’s kind of like a cross between an American Brewpub and an Australian beer garden, one of our staff noticed that there were a lot of fathers with prams coming in so we are also planning a 'Dads with Prams' beer somewhere down the track.” Sherlock added that he believed the rise

in popularity of craft beer, not just here but Australia-wide was reflective of the public’s current desire for more transparency in their food chain. “It’s part of an overall push for people searching for more quality in their food, where its sourced and how it is produced and people can come in here and see every step of the process – which is quite a refreshing change.” - FogHorn Brewhouse – 218 King Street, Newcastle. The opportunity to purchase an affordable, brand new home with all the lifestyle benefits of a secure estate has proven popular with Lake Macquarie over-55s. Since launching to the market in late March, almost half of the 29 stage one homes new to Active Lifestyle Estates Lake Macquarie have sold. Active Lifestyle Estates Project Sales Manager Jason Webb said locals have been astounded by the quality of new homes and the multi-million dollar community transformation. “Starting from $285,000, the new-generation manufactured homes have surprised many people in terms of their quality and size – particularly the

open plan design, large kitchens, modern finishes and alfresco entertainment decks,” Mr Webb said. “Since residents purchase the home and lease, rather than own the land, they don’t have to pay stamp duty, entry fees, strata levies or council rates, yet still enjoy the peace of mind of on-site management. “The affordable purchase price also enables residents to use the unlocked equity from their family home to fund their retirement and do the things they’ve always wanted to do - travel, spend more time with family, friends or pets, and indulge in their favourite hobbies.” The significant redevelopment of the estate has included a new secure, gated entry and plans are underway for a new community hall and wellness centre to complement existing facilities like barbecue areas and a swimming pool. “The new community hall and wellness centre will feature a multi-purpose room that can be used as a community lounge, theatre room, exercise area or meeting space – perfect for events,” Mr Webb said. Residents are also set to benefit from the free Ingenia Care Assist program, launching soon. “This popular service will connect residents with critical health, social and domestic service providers so they can maintain an independent and active lifestyle,” said Mr Webb. Active Lifestyle Estates Lake Macquarie is located at 1A Stockton Street, Morisset and display homes are available for viewing. More information is available by calling Jason Webb on 02 4973 1883 or visiting www. liveinlakemacquarie.com.au

PICK OF THE WEEK Megamind Saturday, TEN, 6pm, PG (2010) Dreamworks animation turns the superhero concept on its head with this witty offering featuring the voice talents of Will Ferrell, Brad Pitt and Tina Fey. Supervillain Megamind (Ferrell, above) has tried for years to conquer Metro City, but is perpetually thwarted by caped superhero Metro Man (Pitt). Until one day when, to his surprise, he defeats the handsome hero. But life isn’t much fun without a nemesis to fight, so Megamind creates a new one, Tighten (Jonah Hill), who then runs amok.

Friday

Roald Dahl’s Esio Trot

Walk The Line

Sunday, ABC, 8.40pm, PG (2014) Dustin Hoffman (right), Judi Dench and the excitable tones of narrator James Corden are just the beginning of a long list of things to love in this adaptation. Hoffman is in fine form as Mr Hoppy, a shy retiree who’ll do anything to win the affections of his widow neighbour Mrs Silver (Dench), aside from share his feelings, that is. But things kick into gear for Hoppy when Mrs Silver’s beloved tortoise (Esio Trot backwards) fails to grow, and a new neighbour (Richard Cordery) sets his sights on the dame.

Saturday, SBS1, 9.35pm, M (2005) This stirring biopic of late music legend Johnny Cash works best as a showcase for its two sensational stars, Joaquin Phoenix (left) as the “Man in Black” and Reese Witherspoon (in Oscar winning form) as his singing partner and eventual lifelong lover June Carter. Their beguiling, if rocky, union gives the narrative a spine to hang the key events of the crooner’s life on. Features the unexpected vocal prowess of Phoenix and Witherspoon, who belt out Cash and Carter’s tunes with passion and assurance.

ARIES MAR 21 – APR 20

CANCER JUNE 22 – JULY 22

LIBRA SEP 24 – OCT 23

CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 20

This is a good time to hold discussions with people you live with: stay alert and read between the lines. This is very much a time when you should believe what you see and not what you hear. Someone could be deliberately evasive or, in extreme cases, deceptive.

No matter what the issue may be, don’t allow yourself to get all stressed out. Remember, often the best way to deal with difficult decisions is to consider all your options then take a break and you will soon get the go ahead.

If you are taking any kind of tests or examinations, read the test sheet twice as Mercury Retrograde can cause confusion. But don’t be nervous. You have the knowledge in your head, all you have to do is express it clearly and you’re sure to succeed.

Your confidence can make others envious so be mindful of what you say as there is always someone ready to chop the tall poppy down. If you act impulsively at work then conflict with colleagues and authority figures is indicated, so be sure to watch your step.

TAURUS APR 21 – MAY 21

If friendships and relationships seem to be hitting a rocky patch, rest assured communication will become clearer with loved ones and matters will start to run smoothly once again. Until then, you shouldn’t spurn wise advice that comes from others who truly care about you.

SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 22

AQUARIUS JAN 21 – FEB 19

With Mars moving through the air sign of Gemini, try to avoid wrangles and disagreements with bureaucrats or officials. Don't grovel, that would go against the Scorpio pride, but do be cooperative, otherwise you risk making a challenging situation worse for yourself.

You are exuding an attractive aura so be prepared to be chased by potential love interests, but don’t run too fast! If you are working on anything artistic, you are certainly going to be provided with extra inspiration allowing you to create a real masterpiece.

SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21

PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20

Mars is having a heavy influence and you could try to force certain issues unwisely or act in haste, but now you’ve been warned you’ll be able to sidestep problems. If colleagues or loved ones are stubborn, bide your time and they’ll come around to your way of thinking.

Family, property and domestic issues are in the spotlight. We all need time for our domestic life and it seems yours has arrived so enjoy it. Don’t rush matters and be prepared to listen to your common sense and intuition as you are certainly going to need them.

Your focus is on money and finances. You will be saving rather than splurging and you won’t be prepared to do anything for nothing. With Mercury retrograde in your money sector, you must check all bank statements and financial arrangements carefully.

GEMINI MAY 22 – JUNE 21 While the behaviour of loved ones could be erratic, the end result of the changes that follow could be to break old and unhelpful patterns and, in the process, eliminate certain unhelpful obstacles. So don’t hinder them, as they seem to know what they’re doing for a change.

LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23

VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23 Avoid signing important work or financial documents until Mercury makes sense on 12 June, otherwise in one way or another you are going to cause yourself losses, frustrations and confusions. Take time to back up your computer as Mercury Retrograde is famous for viruses and other glitches.
