This week...

From the editor We have some very positive uplifting stories to share with you this week. The Newcastle Unity in Diversity Festival is a great initiative happening this Saturday in Civic Park. It’s a great chance to chat to people from different backgrounds and learn a little about their culture. Not to mention the delicious traditional foods that will be on offer. I was fortunate to visit The Place (Charlestown Community Centre) last week to observe some of the numerous activities on offer that make a noticeable difference to the lives of many. Of course, The Place is just one of the many community centres across our region full of dedicated, hard-working and friendly staff. This Friday and Saturday sees the Star Struck performing arts extravaganza take place at Newcastle Entertainment Centre in what will be the culmination of many hours of rehearsal from the thousands of school students taking part. No doubt you’ve already been tempted by this week’s front cover featuring a simple to make fettucine dish from celebrity chef, Curtis Stone. You’ll find that recipe as well as one for lemongrass pumpkin soup in our Taste section which begins on page 25. - Paul Monforte

Ms Parsons said the aim of the festival was to celebrate ‘us’ as people all sharing the same planet. “It’s a chance for people to stand up and be counted, for a fair, kind and just community – an opportunity for us to come together and celebrate all the beauty and diversity of Newcastle,” she said. “There will be multi-cultural food and coffee stalls, live music, dancing, hair brading, face painting, henna and much more!” Ms Parsons said.

A celebration of all cultures Family-friendly diversity festival to unite community ivic Park will this Saturday provide the backdrop for the Newcastle Celebrating Unity in Diversity Festival which is being held as part of a response to the Reclaim Australia rally held in April.

Australian children and young people with limb differences and those who care for them now have a website to call their own – www. limbs4kids.org.au The Limbs 4 Kids website is an initiative of Limbs 4 Life, Australia’s peak organisation for amputees and persons with limb difference. The Limbs 4 Kids program and its website is the first of its kind in Australia; providing comprehensive information and resources for parents and healthcare professionals caring for children and young people with congenital and acquired limb differences. In Australia it is estimated that more than 2,500 children and young people have a limb difference. A limb difference may be caused by a congenital condition identified during pregnancy

or soon after birth, or as a result of a limb amputation due to trauma, infection or cancer. Some children with a limb difference use a prosthetic limb while others may not and use other assistive devices instead.

he mission statement at Charlestown Community Centre, more commonly known as ‘The Place’, reads: “To provide a safe and welcoming place that engages and supports a diverse community to connect, share, learn and strengthen.” A quick glance at the weekly program schedule suggests that mission is right on target. From physical activities such as karate, pilates, dancing and singing, to vital services including counselling and small business advice, the centre caters to people of all ages and circumstances. Centre manager, Lynda Little said it was a privilege to work in such a positive environment. “We have so many wonderful programs and services here,” Ms Little said. “It’s great being able to connect people with the help they need or to find a new activity to enjoy. Everyone is welcome here.” The Place also offers a free program on Wednesday afternoons for year 11 and 12 students Kai Smith, 2, enjoying the Little Kickers program at The Place in Charlestown.

Students are offered homework and social support from volunteer mentors, information about career pathways, university and TAFE as well as access to computers, internet and printing. When Newcastle Weekly visited the centre, a team of toddlers were busy enjoying a session of the Little Kickers program, a fun soccer-based activity introducing children to physical activity while combining learning concepts such as colour and number recognition. Linda Smith, mother of two-year-old Kai, said her son thoroughly enjoyed the weekly session. “He loves coming here and it’s great for him to have the interaction with other children,” Ms Smith said. Community Kooragang Island

Update

Orica supports Newcastle Museum’s new science program Orica is supporting the Newcastle Museum with a $150,000 grant to develop and deliver a new science outreach program. The program, Museum Express, will provide high quality science-based shows, products and activities to primary schools in the Newcastle, Hunter and Central Coast regions. It will build on the museum's extensive experience as a provider of professional, dynamic and contemporary educational programs. The grant funding is being made available through Orica’s Community Partnerships Program launched last year. Competition for the funding was very strong, with 35 submissions from 16 sites across the globe in the first round. General Manager Orica Kooragang Island, Scott Reid, said: “The museum’s proposal for a science outreach program that will inspire and engage young children was outstanding and I’m thrilled it was successful.” Cessnock City Mayor Councillor Bob Pynsent speaks to Brigadier Darren Naumann near the road that has washed away at Branxton Street, Greta.

Brigadier visits to keep recovery moving

B

rigadier Darren Naumann’s role as the Regional Recovery Co-ordinator has led him to Cessnock City to see first-hand the devastation caused from the April floods. Brigadier Naumann was in the area last week visiting sites such as Sale Street, Greta, where a home was washed off its piers, as well as the closed bridges at Frame Drive, Abermain and Branxton Street, Greta. “There’s nothing like seeing these things first-hand,” Brigadier Naumann said. “The consistent themes across the Hunter region have been the huge amount of green waste, road access issues and the effect houses inundated with water have had on families.” Brigadier Naumann said residents’ wellbeing remained paramount and it was important people were still getting the

support services they needed. During his visit to Cessnock, the retired army officer spoke at length to Cessnock City Mayor Councillor Bob Pynsent, General Manager Stephen Glen and Director of Works and Infrastructure Justin FitzpatrickBarr. Brigadier Naumann, in conjunction with the Regional Recovery Committee, is tasked with putting together a step-bystep action plan that will guide the recovery effort across the Hunter and Central Coast and allow work such as road repairs, new bridges and green waste to be prioritised. “At the end of the day, my job is to facilitate discussions and break down barriers between all levels of government to help fast track the clean-up and ensure people are getting the help they need, when and how they need it,” he said

Surfing Scientist, Ruben Meerman, launched Museum Express at Newcastle Museum on Tuesday, 2 June.

The Raiders cross for one of their seven tries against the Knights at Hunter Stadium. Getty Images

Slow start costs Knights dearly nights coach Rick Stone has demanded more from his team following the disappointing 44-22 loss to the Canberra Raiders at Hunter Stadium last Saturday. “We had a couple of big weeks of travel to Auckland and back but I still think our expectations are a little bit better than that first 15 to 20 minutes that’s for sure,” Stone said.

“We were a bit lethargic for sure. “On the back of what happened last week and the trip and everything, you still expect more at home to be honest. “The opposition played alright, I just didn’t think we handled the start particularly well at all and particularly in our defence in the middle. It was disappointing.”

The Knights were down 18-0 after 20 minutes but got themselves back in the match at 18-10 after tries to Akuila Uate and Joey Leilua. However, a try to Raiders’ second-rower Josh Papalii a minute before halftime left the home side desperately chasing points in the second half. Earlier, a field goal from Brock Lamb gave the Knights’ under 20s team a 29-28 win over the Raiders and 22 points from Kerrod Holland (three tries, five goals) saw the NSW Cup team defeat Mounties 32-22. The Knights’ NRL and under 20s sides have the bye this weekend before their next match on Sunday, June 21 against Cronulla at Hunter Stadium. Under 20s kick-off at 11.45am with first grade at 2pm. The NSW Cup team will take on Penrith on Saturday afternoon at 3pm at Pepper Stadium. In positive news for the club, Jeremy Smith has chosen to see out his career in the Hunter after signing a one-year contract extension for next season. Smith was believed to have attracted offers from the Sydney Roosters and one of his former clubs, St George Illawarra. - Paul Monforte

West will be heading to Sydney next week, joining a litany of stars of animation, television and film – including the likes of the voice of Bart Simpson, Nancy Cartwright, Gary Jones of the Stargate franchise and Bobby, Cindy and Peter Brady of the Brady Bunch, for the annual Supernova Pop Culture Festival. “Man, conventions are always great because there’s just so much love – it’s kind of surreal but still very much appreciated,” West told Newcastle Weekly. “I’ve been down to Australia before and absolutely loved it so, of course, I can’t wait to get back.” After first falling in love with the idea of voice acting, watching classic Hanna-Barbera cartoons and the work of giants like Mel Blanc (West even reprised Blanc’s Bugs Bunny for the 1996 flick Space Jam), West’s first big break came as an impressionist on the Howard 16

Stern Radio Show, before landing plum gigs as the voice of Doug Funnie in the seminal animated series Doug and as the lovable Stimpy on The Ren and Stimpy Show. However, he is perhaps best-known for his work in Matt Groening and David Cohen’s satirical sci-fi romp Futurama as the lovable Fry, the mush-mouthed crustacean Dr Zoideberg, the bumbling Professor Farnsworth and the uber-confident Zapp Brannigan. “I was sent to audition for a bunch of characters – Fry, the professor and Zoidberg and I also auditioned for Bender, which was great because I was super excited to be working with Matt Groening,” he said. “There were, like, 200 people reading for various parts so I wasn't sure how I’d do, but a couple of days later I got the parts as Zoidberg and the Professor, but I wasn’t originally hired to do Fry – that came later and I’m sure glad it did. With Fry, though – he’s probably the closest to my own voice. I just based him on what I sounded like when I was 25." Given that West said he struggled with reading as a child, he was constantly amazed at where his career has taken him – especially when he was often

requited to carry entire Furturama scenes on his own. “Yeah, sometimes there’d be like 4, 5 or six pages of dialogue that was all me which was pretty interesting,” he said. “I didn’t find it all that difficult but I was and am still amazed

at where I ended up as I really couldn’t read that well when I was a kid. It’s a constant source of amazement. Supanova Pop Culture Festival – Sydney Showground, Olympic Park, June 19, 20 and 21. - Stephen Bisset

DON’T RAIN ON THIS PARADE aving wowed all and sundry with their debut long player King Me in 2012, Sydney-via-Newcastle four piece Love Parade are back with the difficult second album, Shake on the Mission, which they will be showcasing in our neck of the woods with a triumphant return to the Lass this weekend. “We always look forward to playing in Newcastle as that is where the band started and it’s always great to get back to Newcastle to see how everything is changing,” frontman Nathan Jolly told Newcastle Weekly. While King Me was a warm

and lush sounding slice of powerpop the band have recruited Jay Whalley on the desks with the intention of producing more of a straight up rock and roll record. “For King Me, Robert Cranny did most of the production and he is quite well known for pulling really lush, warm sounds,” Jolly said. “For Shake on the Mission, we kind of wanted to kick against that sound with a bit more of a straightup vibe, so we had Jay Whalley at the desks, who knows the band really well he really created an atmosphere of no stress and no pressure and we weren’t really

THE HAZY CHAINS OF WINTER Hot on the heels of the release of their debut EP, Orb, Sydney-based neo-psych two piece The Hazy Chains will be making a stopover at the Hamilton Station Hotel next weekend. Kait Hudson and Father Yod first banded together in 2013 in the form of the grunge outfit Pulse Mavens and out of the ashes of that band frontwoman Hudson was selected from 2000 applicants across Australia to be a recipient of

the AMP Tomorrow Fund, where Kait and Yod were introduced by Wendy Harmer to perform at the Town Hall and receive a trophy plus a hefty grant which in turn funded the Orb EP. The first single, Feeling Me was released earlier this month and if that’s anything to go by, Orb will be a heavy hitting doozy. Hazy Chains – Hamilton Station Hotel, Friday, June 12.

MOSS GETS INTIMATE ith his watershed live solo album Six Strings recently getting the double CD tenth anniversary treatment, no fooling Australian music legend Ian Moss will be heading to our neck of the woods for two stripped back shows ahead of Cold Chisel’s massive hit out at Hope Estate later in the year. Moss, who is currently in the thick of his Six Strings Classics run told Newcastle Weekly that by the time the show hit town it would be a well-oiled machine. “We’re in the third or fourth week of it all now and I’m really pleased with how things are going,” he said. “It’s not quite like the old days with Chisel when we were going off on crazy stretches – these days there is a little bit of breathing space in the schedule which is nice – but it’s well documented that Newcastle was one of the first places in the country that really got behind the whole live music thing with bands like Cold Chisel and Midnight Oil and it’s great that legacy is continuing so I’ll be looking forward to giving people a couple of really well-oiled shows.” Possibly the closest the unassuming Moss has ever come to a greatest hits package, Six Strings

is a live acoustic set that sees Moss performing acoustic arrangements of some of his better known material - both solo and with Chisel and proved once and for all that Moss could be just as a compelling singer and guitarist with all of the electric bells and whistles stripped away. Despite the fact that his first foray into the solo world, his 1989 set Matchbook, hit number one on the ARIA charts on release, he said there was a certain amount of trepidation surrounding stepping out from behind the safety net of such a bankable name as Cold Chisel. “There was a bit of trepidation before Matchbook, but it probably wasn’t until I started to do the solo acoustic thing in the early 2000s that it really set in,” he said. “I remember doing one of the first shows at the Brass Monkey in Cronulla and I came on stage and it hit me that I was really on my own – I was kind of waiting for the rest of the band to come in. It has been a real learning curve but a good learning curve because performing in this way forces you to look at your work in a different way.” Ian Moss, Nelson Bay Diggers, Friday, June 26 and Belmont 16s, Saturday, June 27. - Stephen Bisset

erhaps one of the most underrated, and most crucial Australian rock bands of the past two decades - Blueline Medic are reforming for what promises to be one heck of a show at the Hamilton Station Hotel this weekend. Formed after the dissolution of iconic Melbourne punk outfits Caustic Soda and Mid Youth Crisis, Blueline Medic continued on where they had left off producing inventive guitar rock drenched in DIY, forging life long fans with the community that built around them. While more widespread plaudits afforded to some of their contemporaries eluded them, across three incendiary albums – The Apology Wars, Text Bomb, and 42:19, created a legacy that

When did you first know you wanted to be a professional artist? I took up drawing in my early 40s and later went onto painting. I felt sure that I could eventually produce good work, but didn’t know how hard it would be, it is a constant struggle, but if it wasn’t a struggle there would be no point in painting at all. Describe your work. I never would know what a painting will finally look like, I just make random marks and try to pull it all together. Communicating a meaning at a more subtle level. A good painting throws people back on themselves, the silence within. What inspires you? Great artists of the past. The hope of producing a masterwork! A rare event in any artist’s life. Positive feedback from buyers and fellow artists also inspires. What has been your greatest achievement? Getting exhibitions in commercial galleries in Newcastle and Sydney, when everyone said it was impossible. The first time I sold a painting was an incredible buzz. What would be your advice for budding artists? Everything you do comes from the hard slog of developing the eye, disciplined drawing, painting from life, from nature, for me it is the foundation of it all, no matter the style of painting. Without it, one just flounders.

Ultimate DVD pack giveaway

Dinosaurs are back in a big way this week at the cinema with the new release Jurassic World. Based twenty-two years after the events of Jurassic Park (1993), Isla Nublar now features a fully functioning dinosaur theme park, Jurassic World, as originally envisioned by John Hammond. After 10 years of operation and visitor rates declining, in order to fulfil a corporate mandate, a new attraction is created to re-spark visitor’s interest, which backfires horribly. Starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas-Howard this is a hotly-anticipated sequel to the 1993 release. Continuing to screen this week at Tower Cinemas Newcastle is Ex Machina. The story is based on a young programmer who is selected to participate in a breakthrough experiment in artificial intelligence by evaluating the human qualities of a breathtaking female A.I. Sci-Fi fans are going to love this one. Garth Weiley - General Manager Event Cinemas, Glendale and Tower Cinemas Newcastle.

EASY WEEKNIGHT MEALS

As Newcastle's nights get cooler, lazy barbecues are out, and feeding hungry mouths on a busy weeknight can be a challenge. Newcastle Weekly has found two easy, nutritious dinners for your working week – so that you don’t have to. You’re welcome! Curtis Stone's fettucine will

warm you up this winter

Curtis Stone’s fettucine with mushroom bolognese This recipe has been provided by Curtis Stone and Coles.

INGREDIENTS 3 tablespoons olive oil

3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

1 small brown onion, finely chopped 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped

1 cup loosely packed fresh basil leaves, torn

1 medium carrot, finely chopped

1⁄4 cup parmesan cheese, shredded

250g white cap mushrooms, sliced

Salt and pepper, for seasoning

500g Coles regular 3 star beef mince 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 400g can Italian diced tomatoes 350g fettuccine

Photo: Getty Images

METHOD Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan until hot. Cook onion and garlic for 2 minutes, then add the carrot and cook for 1 minute, or until just softened. Add mushrooms and cook for 2 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Add the beef and stir over high heat for 3 minutes, or until lightly browned and no lumps of meat remain. Stir in the balsamic vinegar, allow to bubble for 1 minute. Add the tomatoes.

Meanwhile, cook the fettuccine according to packet directions. Remove 1 cup of the pasta water carefully and add it to the sauce. Cook the sauce for a further 10-12 minutes, until slightly thickened. Turn off the heat and add the extra virgin olive oil. Drain the fettuccine. Add the fettuccine to the sauce in the pan and mix well. Scatter over the basil. Divide between four bowls and serve with the parmesan cheese. 25

HYDRATE YOUR SKIN

Keep your skin gorgeous and nourished this winter by using a weekly face mask. The rest of your body may be covered up in winter, but your face is out there subjected to the cold air, bitter wind and constant indoor heating - all of which will dry out your skin. Using a weekly face mask will add much-needed hydration. Don’t think of it as indulgent – think of it as a skin necessity! Relax while treating your skin to that well-deserved nourishment.

PICK OF THE WEEK Red Dog Saturday, NBN, 7pm, PG (2011) This feel-good feature is an endearing tale about man’s best friend, based on the true story of the dog who united a desolate local community while searching the Aussie outback for his long-lost master. The film is brimming with local talent – with Rachael Taylor, Noah Taylor and Luke Ford taking time out of their Hollywood careers. Geoffrey Hall’s evocative cinematography shows the Australia’s red centre in all its magnificence, but it’s the titular canine that evokes all the laughter and tears.

Friday

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

March Of The Penguins Sunday, ABC2, 8.30pm, G (2005) Produced for National Geographic, this is the nature documentary writ large. The power of director Luc Jacquet’s Oscar-winning film lies in its disarmingly rapid progression from quaint visuals of its subject at play, to all-out hearttugger. Facing the force of Mother Nature’s fury, the annual winter mating plight of the Antarctic emperor penguin translates as a deeply poetic struggle for life – as Morgan Freeman’s bedtime-story narration so perfectly observes, it is not just a tale of survival, but “a love story”.

Friday, GO!, 8.30pm, M (2012) Not many films arrive with a weight of expectation as high as The Hobbit, but when you combine a $270 million budget and the fact it’s a prequel to the amazingly successful Lord Of The Rings trilogy, you can see why. It folllows 13 dwarves, a wizard and hobbit Bilbo Baggins in their quest to re-capture the Dwarven homeland. Martin Freeman (pictured) is outstanding as Bilbo, and while the storyline is a little thin, LOTR fans will love it.
