From the editor In last week's column, I mentioned how much I am loving the cold weather we have been having of late and, while it's becoming increasingly harder to drag myself out of bed on these chilly, frost-bitten mornings, it is definitely a welcome change. A huge thank you is in order to, Mark Hughes and Danny Buderus, who braved vicious and chilly onshore winds at Nobby's Beach, last week, for our cover shoot. We spoke to Mark about the Mark Hughes Foundation's major fundrasing drive for the year - Beanies for Brain Cancer. It's inspirational to see a local initiative gaining traction on a national level and, given that we're hurtling headlong into winter, what better way to keep warm than wearing a MHF beanie and raising money for such a worthy cause. Turn to page 7 to find out how. Also this week, we caught up with bona fide Australian musical legend Kate Ceberano (page 15), who will be rolling into town as part of the APIA Good Times tour with fellow musical luminaries John Paul Young, Jon Stevens and Daryl Braithwaite. How inspiring it is to see this group of musos still at the top of their games after all these years. This quartet proves that rocking out isn't just the dominion of the young. Have a great week.

Apprentices rally against TAFE funding cuts at Belmont TAFE campus.
Hunter-wide decline in TAFE enrolments pprentice enrolments at TAFE campuses across the Hunter have fallen 30%, new figures show. The number of apprentices in training dropped from 14,399 in June 2014 to 10,028 in March 2015. The federal electorate of Newcastle suffered the biggest blow, with 1516 fewer enrolments,
ahead of the Hunter (1169), Charlton (736), Shortland (491) and Paterson (459) electorates. In September 2015 there were 295,300 apprentices in training across Australia. This had plummeted from 417,000 in September 2013, after the Abbott government cut $2.75 billion in funding from the Skills
portfolio, including $1 billion from the Tools for Your Trade program as well as access and mentoring programs. This represents a 29% decline in apprentice enrolments across the country. Last week, labor MPs Sharon Claydon (Newcastle), Pat Conroy (Charlton), and Sharon Bird (Cunningham), as well as Paterson labor candidate Meryl Swanson, visited Newcastle, Belmont and Maitland TAFE campuses to discuss the drop in enrolments. About a dozen local apprentices rallied at the Belmont campus to join in the conversation. Pat Conroy slammed the liberal party’s ‘jobs and growth’ campaign slogan on his public Facebook page. “You can’t have “jobs and growth” without training the workers of the future,” he said. “Many of the young tradespeople we met in Belmont will be small business owners in the future. “But for all their talk, the liberals are just cutting funding and defaulting to their fallback position of relying heavily on 457 visas.
“Only a labor government can ensure TAFE’s viability and strength into the future.” But Minister for Vocational Education and Training, Scott Ryan, begged to differ. “Labor gutted Australian apprenticeships, cutting employer incentive payments nine times between 2011 and 2013, a total of $1.2 billion,” he said. “In contrast, the coalition has not cut a single incentive payment to employers of apprentices.” Mr Ryan said if the Turnbull government was re-elected on 2 July, $7 billion would be injected in vocational education and training, of which $1.8 billion would be distributed among the states and territories to support the operation of their training systems, including TAFE. In addition, the Turnbull government’s Youth Jobs Path Programme, announced in the 2016 budget, would see the introduction of paid internships for young people receiving welfare payments. - Georgia Osland
Permanent dredging solution sought
HIV screening on the agenda
Swansea MP, Yasmin Catley has called for state government funding for a permanent dredge for Swansea Channel, saying previous dredging campaigns have fallen short of the mark. Ms Catley has written to the Minister for Lands and Water, Nial Blair, to seek funding for the permanent dredge ahead of the state government budget, to be handed down on 21 June. She said that recent campaigns had failed after short periods of time. “The Swansea Channel has been the subject of dredging campaigns for more than 50 years, and has been dredged on an ad hoc basis for the last 10 years at least, at significant cost to the taxpayer,” she said. “The recent dredging
With around 14% of people with HIV in NSW possibly unaware that they have the virus, Hunter New England Health are looking to change that statistic with their HIV Testing Week, currently underway. HIV Testing week aims to raise awareness of the importance of testing to improve health outcomes and reduce HIV transmission. HNE director of sexual health, Nathan Ryder said the Hunter New England District had made significant strides in making testing easier by providing innovative services such as rapid HIV testing, express clinics, after hours and drop-in clinics. “We need people in groups at risk of HIV especially to test regularly so they can receive early treatment and prevent transmission to others.” “As well as gay and homosexually active men including those aged over 50 years, hetrosexual people who might be at risk of HIV should also be tested. This includes people from other countries where there are high rates of HIV, anyone with a sexual partner from a high-risk country and people who have had unprotected sex while travelling in these countries.” Mr Ryder added that all pregnant women, irrespective of risk, should also be tested, as treatment during pregnancy was effective in preventing infection in the baby. People can request HIV testing at their GP or health service or, to find out where to get tested, visit health.nsw.gov.au/sexualhealth/sexualhealth-clinics.aspx

campaign cost the NSW government $2.5 million and lasted only eight months until the channel began shoaling again. Ms Catley has garnered in-principal support from local boating stakeholders and MPs Jodie Harrison and Greg Piper. “Not only is a permanent dredge a win for the local boating community, but research suggests that a permanent solution could also provide an economic boost for tourism in Lake Macquarie by up to $3.7 million per year. “It is apparent to me, my parliamentary colleagues from the Lake Macquarie area, and to the many community organisations surrounding Lake Macquarie that the Swansea Channel requires ongoing maintenance dredging to ensure that it remains navigable at all times.”

There were people in the park, however none were near the branch when it fell just metres from a picnic table at the entrance to the park, used by the mobile Red Cross blood bank bus every other month. The gum tree is one of about 30 in the park – roughly 40 years old, long-time residents estimate – that suffers from white ant infestation and old age. However, Lake Macquarie council has only now moved to organise for arborists to assess the trees’ condition. Residents say the council waited too long to take action. Ted Hyham, who has lived in Valentine for about 30 years, was driving past the park when he

Bold plan for affordable housing The Catholic Diocese of MaitlandNewcastle has lodged plans with Newcastle council to redevelop the former Empire Hotel site in Newcastle West into affordable housing. The plans, developed in agreement with the Hunter Development Corporation and subject to the council’s approval, outline the diocese’s proposal to build a mix of 128 studio, one and two-bedroom units. The Empire Hotel, on Hunter Street, was demolished in early 2011. Until now, its future had been largely undecided. The diocese recently developed affordable housing at Mayfield, and has three more developments underway in Maitland and Lake Macquarie. The diocese and the HDC anticipate a completion date of early 2018 on the Newcastle site.

Rugging up for a cure ith the temperature rapidly dropping over the past week or so, what better way to stay warm than rugging-up with a beanie? Even better, if you don one during June you could be doing your bit to raise money for brain cancer research.

“It was something that we came up with two or three years ago as a way to have a bit of fun and raise awareness about brain cancer as well as funding into brain cancer research,” he said. “It’s been growing every year, which is just amazing. “While Newcastle is the focus of our fundraising, we’ve seen it grow throughout all of Australia thanks to the work of people like Paul Harrogan, who put MHF firmly on the map when he was on I’m A Celebrity and also Johnathon Thurston who has been amazing with getting the word out there.” Hughes, who played 161 games for the Newcastle Knights, including their 2001 grand final victory, knows better than anyone the propensity of Novocastrians to get behind a cause with gusto. “The way Newcastle and the Hunter get behind things like this is just phenomenal,” he said. “To see the level of support MHF

Hindmarsh spruiks responsible gambling message amble only what you can afford to lose. That was the take-home message from former Paramatta Eels captain Nathan Hindmarsh’s visit to Toronto High School for Responsible Gambling Awareness Week last week. responsible gambling requirements. Nathan kicked off the session with an anecdote about his own battle with gambling addiction, which started when he was 18. What began as a harmless punt on the poker machines – $5 on his eighteenth birthday – quickly snowballed into an addiction he struggled to gain control over. Nathan told of how he often maxed out his ATM withdrawal limit and borrowed money from his teammates. “I thought I was in control of it; I thought I could stop at any time, but that wasn’t the case,” he said. At the peak of his addiction, Nathan said he could spend $3000 in one sitting. He estimates he spent some $300,000 all up. Nathan’s addiction continued for a few years before he sought professional help from a counsellor, which, along with support from friends and family, kicked his habit. “You don’t have to hit rock bottom to have an issue with gambling, but it’s important to ask for help before you do hit rock bottom and lose it all,” he said. Today, Nathan says he might bet $20 once in a blue moon and walk away. “I’m not antigambling, I’m just here to spread the message that you can have a healthy relationship with gambling,” he said. - Georgia Osland

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT
Some of Australia’s rock royalty will take to the Civic Theatre stage later this month.
THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE e’ve, no doubt, got our fair share of world class singers and songwriters in this country. Luckily for Hunter punters, four of them will be together on the Civic Theatre stage this month. Kate Ceberano, Daryl Braithwaite, John Paul Young and Jon Stevens, all legends in their own right, will join forces for what promises to be a powerhouse show when the Newcastle leg of the APIA Good Times tour kicks off. "It’s going to be an awful lot of fun,” Ceberano told Newcastle Weekly. “John Paul Young is one of the cutest things in the entire universe, Daryl is simply amazing and Jon has one of the best voices in the country.” Ceberano added that, aside from the plethora of hits from all four artists – including Love Is In The Air, Pash, Bedroom Eyes, Horses, Take Me Back and Yesterday’s Hero, audiences could also expect a few surprises as well. “It’s all going to be pretty low-key and off the cuff,” she said. “We’ve all been at this for a while now so we have some pretty good stories to tell so we’ll be offering some insight into our respective careers.
“Also, we’ll each be doing around 20 to 40 minutes of our own material and we might jump in on each others sets as well – for example, I’m hoping I get to sing Margaret Urlich’s part on Horses with Daryl and, because Jon and I have worked together in Jesus Christ Superstar, we’ll probably belt out a few of those numbers together as well.” The current tour comes off the back of the recent release of Ceberano’s 24th album – the 3-disc/53-track retrospective Anthology, which debuted at number 9 on the ARIA albums chart, making it the first time since 2009, that the singer had a top 10 berth. The compilation represents a continuation of a bit of a ‘purple patch’ for Ceberano whose previous studio album Kensal Road was met with critical acclaim for its earthy, adroit songwriting and the incorporation of Ceberano’s early musical influences of Hawaiian folk and 70’s West Coast rock, coupled with a nu-folk/nucountry tinge influenced by the likes of Mumford and Sons and Laura Marling. “I’m just so proud of Anthology – it’s really great to be able to look back on your career in
such a way – there’s still a few pinch me moments in there,” she said. “Also, Kensal Road is very special to me because it was released in the same year that I was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame, which is a great feather in the cap, but given that it was an album of completely original music and it was so well received, is just awesome.” For Ceberano, who first found fame in the mid-1980s with pop-funk outfit I’m Talking before launching a successful solo career that has seen her traverse soul, pop and jazz, it is the thrill of getting up in front of an audience that keeps her coming back. “Live performance is something that keeps us artists relevant,” she said. “You really do have to keep yourself out there if you want to have any kind of longevity in this business and, lucky for me, performing in front of an audience has always been one of my biggest loves, and the passion isn’t dying down yet.” The APIA Good Times tour rolls into the Civic Theatre on Thursday 9 June. crisis support services in the Hunter. The Designer Depot is a first for Newcastle, built on similar preloved clothing store models in Sydney and Melbourne. “Every single one of us has something at home, be it clothes or shoes or a handbag, that we once paid a lot of money for that we don’t just want to give away,” Jason said. “This is the perfect way to sell those items for a bit of cash while helping out Lifeline at the same time.” Jason said the community could expect to see more innovative ideas from Lifeline in the future. “We’ve just done our five-year plan, and in five years this retail space will look completely different again,” he said. “You just watch this space, girlfriend!” Lifeline’s Designer Depot is located at 50 Clyde Street, Hamilton North. To book a space at the Designer Hub, phone 4940 2070. Maximum eight stalls per day.

t’s no secret that women love to shop. But what if you could shop designer labels without the hefty price tag? Well now you can, at Lifeline Newcastle, Hunter & Central Coast’s Designer Depot at Hamilton North. The quaint shopfront is brimming with tops, dresses, pants, kaftans and sweaters in brands like Country Road, Laura Ashley, Jag and Lisa Ho – all carefully handpicked from Lifeline donations. Items are marked down to 10-30% of the recommended retail price, starting from as little as $10. The shopfront is an extension of Lifeline’s Clyde Street furniture shop, just a few doors up from the depot. It opened about three weeks ago in a refurbished, repurposed space where a disused, derelict building once stood, not long after Lifeline opened a secondhand bookshop and reading nook there. Lifeline’s Manager Retail Operations Jason Fox said initially the depot was launched to keep the bookshop afloat, but the depot had exceeded everyone’s expectations. “Last Saturday we had 200 people walk through,” he said. “It’s really blown us away.” The depot is open from 10am to 3pm, seven days a week. This includes a ‘Designer Hub’ on Saturdays and Sundays, where sellers can book a space in front of the shop to sell their preloved, highend threads and donate a portion of their profits to Lifeline. All proceeds from the Designer Depot and Designer Hub go towards Lifeline’s suicide prevention and

WINTER HOUSEKEEPING TIPS
The cooler months are the perfect time to do a little household cleaning and reorganisation. Get a head start on the spring clean with these winter housekeeping tips – it could save you time and money in the long run. 1. Clean the kettle. To remove mineral deposits, boil equal Consider tip number five as an interesting parts white vinegar and water way to cull your winter wardrobe. inside the kettle. Remove from heat and let it sit for a few hours before rinsing. Hand-wash the pot’s exterior with a sponge. 2. Stock up on candles. These come in handy in the event of a blackout during storm season, and also make for an environmentally-friendly way to reduce electricity usage. 3. Clean gutters. The NSW State Emergency Service recommends clearing out gutters during the cooler months ahead of bushfire season. This will help you be better prepared if a bushfire does occur. 4. Make your entryway winter-friendly. Invest in a sturdy welcome mat to stop family members and guests tracking in dirt. A draughtstopping door snake underneath the front door will also help to keep warmth inside the house and save on heating costs. 5. Organise your wardrobe. When digging out your winter threads, hang items on the rack with coat hangers all facing the same way. Each time you use a garment, turn the coat hanger the other way. At the end of winter, if there are garments you haven’t used, consider donating them to goodwill.
JUNE JOBS
BUILT TO LAST all spring annuals) need to be given a lift with Flourish each week to encourage IN THE GARDEN growth and JUDY SHARPE flowering. There are some plants which don’t mind being pruned now. They include grapes, abelia and plumbago. Be careful pruning in frost-prone areas and never prune spring flowering and tropical species at this time. Growth on lawns will slow, don’t mow too low and deep water every three days keeping an eye out for those pretty green tufts of winter grass which will need to be eliminated before seed heads appear. Cyclamen and orchids provide great colour for inside during winter – remember to refresh cyclamen by popping them outside in a sheltered spot at night.

Last weekend certainly reminded us that winter can be cold, but this isn’t an excuse to down garden tools. In fact, it’s an ideal time to do the heavy work – construction of new gardens, drainage correction, paving and so on. The windy conditions were a good reminder that, during winter, watering needs to be addressed, especially when new plants are being established. June is the ideal month to plant out new-season roses. If soil hasn’t been prepared, plant out in a good rose potting mix, remembering never to fertilise new roses! Daily watering is necessary as the roses will be working to come out of dormancy – lack of water will cause new leaves to shrivel. The garden can be quite colourful during June as Sasanqua camellias are in full bloom and pansies enjoy the cooler weather, providing pots of colour. Pansies planted in the garden (indeed

PICK OF THE WEEK Over The Hedge Friday, GO!, 6pm, G (2006) A man-versus-nature tale of scheming racoon RJ (voiced by Bruce Willis), who makes the mistake of stealing a surly bear’s (Nick Nolte) stash of food and is given a week to pay it back. Gathering a mismatched family of animals to help him, he sets out to repay the debt, only to stumble across a suburban shopping strip that has sprung up during the winter hibernation. The story affords plenty of digs at the excesses of modern life – urban sprawl, 4WDs and junk food.

Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines
Face/Off Saturday, 7MATE, 10pm, MA15+ (1997) Ex-Hong Kong-based director John Woo (Mission: Impossible II) tackles one of the most far-fetched premises for an action movie – cop and criminal trade faces – and delivers the action in spades. John Travolta and Nicolas Cage take to their admittedly tough roles like ducks to water, working hard to make you believe that it is all possible. Woo relies on his amazing stylistic sensibilities, concocting wall-to-wall action set pieces with almost balletic grace to overcome any shortcomings in the script.
Sunday, 7MATE, 9.35pm, M (2003) Arnold Schwarzenegger returns to his signature cybernetic role and is at his brawny best, given a well-chosen supporting cast to play off. Arnie’s cyborg killing machine is sent from the future to protect the would-be leader of the human resistance, John Connor (Nick Stahl), from the attentions of the sexy and lethal Terminatrix (Kristanna Loken). Along for the bruising ride is Claire Danes, a vet who proves to be rather handy with a Kalashnikov and who’s a highly effective foil for Arnie.

Saturn the disciplinarian of the zodiac is making Iggy's natural ebullient personality a bit subdued with additional challenges being imposed upon her. A series of eclipses through the year will invite her to move out of her comfort zone. Fortunately, expansive Jupiter helps her to achieve professional success, therefore she should double her efforts at work between now and 9 September.

It will take careful attention to catch dishonesty in a situation involving money. Keep an eye on the incompetence of others as well as your own, but do not seek friction. Do your research into any transaction and ask how much you can rely on another’s resources.

Career-related decisions are going to bring issues, so embrace challenge and don’t be afraid to take a leadership role. Focus on opportunities to better your finances and let money be high on your agenda. Consider opportunities that arise outside of your ambitions and the chance of reward will be high.
Flying emotions will come from neglecting health and simple necessities. Take time to yourself and press pause on outings with friends. Unless you want to risk relationships breaking down, avoid situations you know will test your tolerance and diplomacy.
Changes in living conditions, whether it be beautifying your home and living space or in dealing with property matters, will lead to reconciliation in family or domestic situations. An increased need to connect with those you trust will be an opportunity to resolve past issues.

This week, if you control your temper and find positivity in helping others, you will overcome situations that normally frustrate or inconvenience you. Remember to see the bigger picture and consider extending this deeper thinking to other areas, such as beliefs, faith and big questions.
