WHY I HAVE A SOFT SPOT FOR NEWCASTLE

OzHarvest Limited

Got Your Back Sista

OzHarvest Newcastle has successfully rescued and redistributed more than 3.5 million meals since operations began in February, 2010. This equates to 1,194,344 kilograms of good quality surplus food saved from landfill and delivered to more than 80 charities to feed vulnerable people in our local communities. OzHarvest is the only perishable food rescue organisation in Newcastle and the Hunter Region, collecting food from all types of licenced food providers including supermarkets, clubs, hotels, wholesalers, distribution centres, corporate events and cafes. We are excited to be a recipient of the 2016 ClubGRANTS program. The generous support will allow us to provide an additional 63,000 meals to those in need and help us continue to make a make a profound difference to the lives of thousands of the Hunter’s most vulnerable residents.

The spirit of the Got Your Back Sista charity and The Sista Code online community is to uplift, inspire and support other women, including our most vulnerable sistas, those who have escaped a violent relationship and must start their lives again. There were 2,974 cases of domestic violence reported in the Hunter last year from June 2014 to June 2015, predominately domestic violence against women and children. The Got Your Back Sista charity is fielding calls for help daily, with requests to assist women moving out of refuges and crisis accommodation as well as friends and family of victims asking where they can go to get help and advice for their loved ones. Currently based in NSW, we work directly with domestic violence services and refuges, by referral only, to provide assistance with sourcing household items and the ‘Be A Sista’ mentoring program.

Caves Beach Surf Lifesaving Club Caves Beach SLSC is very grateful for the support received through ClubGRANTS, which has allowed the club to upgrade and maintain the required rescue equipment. The club, as with all surf clubs across Australia, is required to meet strict standards in regard to the quality of safety and rescue equipment made available on the beach. This in effect means that funds need to be raised each year to maintain those standards. It is through the ClubGRANTS process that this is allowed to happen.

Eastlakes Family Support Services

Sugarvalley Neighbourhood Centre Sugarvalley Neighbourhood Centre provides a safe, supportive environment where we offer services, opportunities and resources to give a sense of belonging and empowerment, by improving the lives of our community members. We exist to support the principle of social justice that everyone has the right to employment, adequate housing, education, quality health care, safety, freedom of speech and reasonable quality of life irrespective of age, gender, race, religion, disability or economic status. The centre also carries out research, planning, implementation and monitoring of programs in response to local needs. We run playtime, community breakfast club, over 50s Fun & Fitness, financial assistance and youth mentoring programs and host events like the Cancer Council’s Biggest Morning Tea, RSPCA Cupcake Day, Neighbourhood Week, Youth Week and ANZAC Day, along with other events.

Redhead Surf Life Saving Club

At Eastlakes Family Support our philosophy is that families have the right to access resources that will increase their opportunities and empower them to make informed choices. We remain supportive regardless of those choices, still maintaining that change is possible. One of the services available at Eastlakes Family Support is the Staying Home Leaving Violence Program, which works with women who have left a domestic violence relationship to prevent them from becoming homeless. This program also supports women to feel safe in the home of their choice. One way we do this is to provide and install security cameras for high-risk cases when available. This year we have been able to purchase another set of cameras thanks to ClubGRANTS.

Mark Hughes Foundation The Mark Hughes Foundation (MHF) is so grateful for the support of ClubGRANTS. ClubGRANTS will fund our administrative support and online fundraising platform for the next year. By utilising this platform last year we saw the MHF annual Wear a Beanie for Brain Cancer fundraiser and Kokoda Campaign raise over $300,000. Because of ClubGRANTS, all funds raised by the community can be directed to make a difference to brain cancer patients through research. MHF to date has established a Brain Cancer Biobank, an essential research asset funded the Mark Hughes Foundation Brain Cancer Coordinator position; pilot funded various research projects and funded travel grants for researchers to meet up with the world’s best and exchange ideas and form collaborations.

Redhead Surf Life Saving Club has been serving the community since 1908. We currently have about 800 members ranging in ages from five to over 80 years old. Last season our 200 patrolling members completed a combined total of over 4,000 hours in keeping the public safe. Over the season we completed 64 rescues, 192 first aid treatments and 1,234 preventative actions. The club has an active nipper section where members from five to 14 years old are taught many skills associated with surf awareness and confidence. Redhead boasts a large competition section with many state, Australian and even world champions. At Redhead, we are passionate about our club and we are committed to supporting our diverse member base and serving our community.

RSL DefenceCare RSL DefenceCare provides practical, compassionate and immediate support for current and ex-serving members of the Australian Defence Force and their families. Many of the veterans RSL DefenceCare helps have PTSD, anxiety, depression or chronic physical pain associated with their military service and deployments. Many have left the Defence Force and are struggling to cope in the civilian world after the supports they have come to rely on are no longer available to them. Many are ageing and require supports to enhance their quality of life, and many are family members and/or carers of veterans who need support of their own. This project will support the welfare of current and ex-serving ADF personnel and their families whenever they need it. The support received will depend on their individual circumstances, and will be aimed at relieving the crisis and supporting them to receive the help they need to improve their future well-being.

Austism Spectrum Australia – Aspect Hunter School Autism Spectrum Australia is a not-for-profit organisation started by a small group of parents 50 years ago. The organisation has grown from strength to strength to become one of the largest autism-specific service providers in the world. Aspect Hunter School has its administration base in Thornton and a range of integrated satellite classes for high-functioning children in schools throughout the Hunter and in Port Macquarie. We have an outstanding success rate in supporting young children with autism to develop the skills they need to be able to manage themselves in less specialised settings in the future. One-third of our students transition each year from our school, mostly to mainstream schools, and are successful in maintaining those placements. We teach the Board of Studies Curriculum through fun activities using play, technology and nature, allowing us to achieve fantastic outcomes for our students.

Little Wings Little Wings is a not-for-profit organisation, which helps seriously ill children and their families from regional NSW receive access to life-saving medical treatment. The free flight and ground transport service provided by Little Wings assists many children with serious and chronic illnesses who require regular trips to the city-based hospitals. Since the expansion of the Little Wings service to the John Hunter Children’s Hospital Newcastle last year, this has provided the opportunity for children particularly from the Hunter New England, Northern NSW and Mid North Coast regions to receive better access to the world class medical services provided by the specialist Children’s Hospital. Accessibility is improved, and importantly the emotional stresses, travel fatigue and financial burden experienced by the family is reduced.

Sailability Through sailing, Sailability Belmont enriches the lives of people with any type of disability, the elderly and financially and socially disadvantaged. Sailability Belmont has more than 90 sailors and over 60 volunteers and conducts the program four days a week for 46 weeks each year. Currently, five schools participate in the program as well as individuals and groups from other community organisations. Most of the participants are accompanied by an experienced volunteer sailor but some of them learn to sail on their own. Our fleet consists of 18 dinghies, including 13 Access 2.3s and five Access 303s (which are all two-seaters). Our activities are based at the Belmont 16 Foot Sailing Club.

TOTAL DONATED

$401,953 In 1998 the NSW government created a scheme (now known as ClubGRANTS) that diverted gaming machine revenue back to local communities. The ClubGRANTS scheme covers activities that are aimed at improving the living standards of low income and disadvantaged people. Although the scheme is a requirement of regulations that govern club licences, each year participating clubs voluntarily exceed the minimum requirements of the scheme.

news Hope for Williamtown red zone residents

illiamtown families are breathing a small sigh of relief, with news of critical mass being reached for a fully-funded class action against the Department of Defence for the spread of toxic chemicals at the RAAF base and surrounds. More than 300 people signed up to litigation funder IMF Bentham’s class action suit, which means it will be going ahead without any funding limitations. It’s welcome news to husband-and-wife duo Cain and Rhianna Gorfine, who are behind Williamtown Residents Action Group. The pair and their three young children live on Cabbage Tree Road on one of 650 properties inside the ‘red zone’, where residents have been advised not to drink or use groundwater; eat eggs or drink milk produced in the area; eat fish caught in the area; and to moderate consumption of homegrown fruit and vegetables, meat and poultry until further notice. These restrictions were put in place by the NSW Environment Protection Authority after high concentrations of perfluorinated compounds, including PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate) and

PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid), were found in the ground and surface water in Williamtown. Aqueous film-forming foam, which is now known to contain PFOS and PFOA, was used at the RAAF base for fire training and emergency response from 1976, and, over time, these chemicals have seeped into the groundwater underneath the site. As part of the class action suit, to be led by Gaden Lawyers in Sydney, residents are calling for compensation for economic loss, and to reserve rights if, further down the track, exposure to these chemicals is found to have caused adverse health effects. Mrs Gorfine said it had been a long time coming since news of the contamination first came to light about a year ago, but she and her husband felt relieved something was finally being done about it. “[The lawsuit] is going to give the community a future,” she said. “Up until now we didn’t have a future; property values are dropping, people couldn’t sell. “Residents are in this situation through no fault of their own. Why should we have to live like this?” - Georgia Osland

NDIS mishaps cause chaos The federal government is being urged to pay all outstanding claims to National Disability Insurance Service (NDIS) providers. Reported delays and system errors in the NDIS payments system have left many disability service providers unpaid since the NDIS began its national roll-out at the turn of the financial year. This has prompted Member for Newcastle Sharon Claydon to speak out. “That many service providers have continued to deliver care and services without payment since June is testament to their deep commitment to the NDIS and their clients, but it is not a sustainable or acceptable situation,” she said. “It’s vital that we all work together to make the NDIS a success.”

Greyhounds Transition Taskforce coordinator Dr John Keniry met with industry stakeholders in Newcastle last week to hear from them on the statewide greyhound racing ban. The ban, which will take effect from 17 July next year, has caused quite a stir in the Hunter, with many greyhound breeders, owners and trainers already feeling crippled by it. Dr Keniry told stakeholders the NSW government was committed to providing financial assistance to transition dogs and people out of the greyhound racing industry, as well as other government and non-government support services, such as training programs and business advice. He said the legislation that was currently before the Upper House would allow for a smooth transition.

news Residents report safety fears on late-night trains A peak in reported late-night incidents on trains has prompted Wallsend MP Sonia Hornery to speak out on her constituents’ behalf. Ms Hornery said she had received an influx of reports from residents travelling from Sydney to Newcastle at night, saying they felt unsafe. Most recently, there was an incident involving three young men travelling on the Central Coast & Newcastle line who were riding their bikes in the train carriages. Commuters had reportedly hoped there would be police patrolling the train or at the station to meet the offenders, however neither occurred. Ms Hornery said the general consensus was that many would like to see an increased police presence on trains late at night. “Residents have noticed some police presence during the day, but not at all at night when they would prefer it, particularly in the quiet carriages,” she said. In response, Ms Hornery is calling on the ministers for police and transport to increase patrols on Hunter trains, and plans to raise the issue in parliament this week. “I will be asking two questions: how many transport police are assigned to trains during the

week and nightly after six; and how many offences, assaults and arrests have occurred on Hunter trains in the last financial year,” she said. Ms Hornery believes that the issue boils down to recent budget cuts and service cuts. “In 2013 the government got rid of transport officers and replaced them with transport police, however the police are assigned to a whole range of tasks, not just patrolling the trains, and it doesn’t leave them with much time to actually patrol,” she said. - Amy Theodore

Healthy lunch box tips As a parent, getting kids to each their fruits and vegetables can be a tricky feat. However, what they put in their mouths throughout the day not only influences their concentration levels in the classroom, but can reduce their risk of cancer. Schools in the Hunter are taking steps to create healthier habits for primary school-aged students by jumping on board the Cancer Council NSW’s Eat It To Beat It program. Through Healthy Lunch Box Sessions, the program provides free 25-minute sessions for parents with children in kindergarten during orientation period or throughout the school year. The session shows parents easy ways to pack a healthy lunch box for their child, as well as providing great recipe ideas and tips and tricks to get their kids to eat the healthy food they pack. For more information on the program, go to cancercouncil. com.au and search Eat It To Beat It. - Amy Theodore

Showing compassion in a practical way

Helpful Love founder Kim Oakhill with her daughter Dusty, 1, and son Conway, 3. Photo: Jamie Wicks

A Medowie mum-of-two has started an online initiative to help those grieving a loved one in a unique yet practical way. Kim Oakhill is behind Helpful Love, a onestop shop for services people might need after suffering a loss. It works like an online directory, where you can search an area for local service providers – everything from lawn mowing and house cleaning to hairdressing and family photography. Kim said more often than not, our first thought was to send flowers to a friend or family member who had lost a loved one, but this was not always the best way in which we could show our support. This had been the case for Kim’s friend, Kerryn Tippett, and her husband Mick, who lost their three-year-old daughter Maddie to a respiratory virus that attacked her heart. “Everyone sent flowers because that’s just what we do, right?,” Kim said. “But I thought, surely there is something we can do that is more helpful during this most tragic time.” On 18 February this year, exactly two years after Maddie passed, Kim founded Helpful Love. She said the idea behind it was to provide

useful gifts in lieu of sending flowers. Once the gift-giver has found which service they would like to buy for their friend or family member, they can make contact directly with the vendor to make the transaction. Or, if they are unsure what the recipient needs, they can buy Helpful Love vouchers directly through the website. The vouchers are valued at $50, and, if need be, several can be bought at once, and used separately among different vendors. Kim also sells gift cards handmade by local designers, bath salts made in the Hunter Valley, and worry dolls, if the sender would like to add a tangible gift to their voucher. The vouchers and gifts are then posted to the recipient. Though she is a busy working mum, Kim said she was happy to support others if she knew it made a difference. “Because I’m so passionate about it I just make it a priority,” she said. To check out Helpful Love, or for more information, go to helpfullove.com.au. - Georgia Osland

cover story CAMPS HELP SIBLINGS SPEND QUALITY TIME For children living with cancer, the chance to get outdoors and play with their siblings is priceless.

Held at various locations in each Camp Quality region across Australia, Middle Camps are full of fun, creative and challenging activities. The camps create opportunities for kids to form new friendships and learn important life skills, including teamwork and problem-solving.

This year, thanks to a handful of registered clubs in the Lake Macquarie area, thousands of dollars will be invested in Middle Camps in Newcastle, held at Broken Bay Sport and Recreation Centre. The funding was provided through ClubGRANTS, a community funding program through which registered clubs donate vital funds to community groups, charities and sporting teams across NSW. It will help fund 30 places for children at Middle Camps as well as 25 volunteer companions. Camp Quality’s Newcastle office, located in Warners Bay,

Camp Quality has been a recipient of ClubGRANTS for the past 15 years, and, during that time, the funding has been used to boost various support programs not just Middle Camps. Fundraising coordinator Shari Nichol said as a not-forprofit charity, Camp Quality relied heavily on the generosity

of everyday Australians and corporate partners to ensure every child living with cancer had the best quality of life possible. “We help at school, at home, in hospitals and out in the community. Our unshakeable passion for positivity forms the foundations of everything that we do. We believe in the power of positive psychology to build optimism and resilience. Do the robot

est Wallsend Public School students brought the moves last week at the RoboCup Junior Hunter Regional 2016 event. For the first time, the school entered a junior and senior team in the National Science Week event at The Forum, which sees primary school students put their minds together to build robots to compete in dance, soccer and rescue challenges. Students are given basic robotic kits, including a computing brick, motor, sensors and wheels, well ahead of the event and must dedicate time during school hours to

designing, building and programming their robots. The senior Westy Bots team designed theirs around a Ghostbusters theme, adding on a ‘proton gun’ for effect. They made their tiny bot groove to the Ghostbusters theme song, eliciting smiles and the odd head bopping from the 400-plus other students from schools throughout the Hunter who attended the event. Unfortunately, the Westy Bots missed out on qualifying for the finals. However, senior team member Jarred Lyle said they will “definitely be back next year”. “It was so fun,” he said, “I can’t wait to do it again.” Fun is indeed a major component of the competition, says RoboCup Junior technical chair Aaron Wong. “This competition is to encourage students so that they can have a go and have some fun,” he said. The event had tripled in size from last year, Mr Wong said. - Georgia Osland

New hope for severe asthma sufferers

Childhood sexual abuse was once a taboo subject not often discussed by men. Since the start of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse the silence has been broken.

Respiratory researchers from the University of Newcastle are on the cusp of a clinical breakthrough for severe asthma sufferers. Professor Phil Hansbro and his team – Dr Richard Kim, James Pinkerton and Dr Jay Horvat – have been exploring the role of various mircoRNAs that are known to bind to different genes and fuel the inflammation of airways in severe asthma sufferers. The immune response of an asthma sufferer to viruses and bacteria is sub-optimal, leaving them more susceptible to infections which drive steroid resistance. Using a world-leading laboratory model to replicate a steroid-resistant asthma attack, induced by infections and allergens, the team investigated the role of a molecule called microRNA-21 (miR-21). This molecule suppresses PTEN,

Bob Evans is returning to Newcastle on 3 September to captivate audiences at Elsewhere: The Rooftop.

A SINGER’S SOFT SPOT

Where better to enjoy Father’s Day than at the movies. This Father’s Day, Event Cinemas has you covered, with an exciting line-up of movies that will please the whole family, including dad. For movie listings, locations and session times, go to eventcinemas.com.au.

FOR NEWCASTLE Those who best remember acoustic folk-pop singer/songwriter Bob Evans by his hit Don’t You Think It’s Time might be surprised to learn it’s been 10 years since he released the track on his second album. Since then, the alter-ego of Jebediah frontman Kevin Mitchell has put out three more albums, the last of which (Car Boot Sale) Bob has just finished a bunch of album launch shows for. He plans to bring these fresh tracks, plus some fan favourites that illustrate the length and breadth of his musical career to date, to Elsewhere: The Rooftop on 3 September. After a stint in Melbourne, Bob now lives in the blissful seaside hamlet of Ocean Grove, Victoria, however, he said he was excited to

Enter to WIN return to Newcastle, which he had a soft spot for. “We’ve [Jebediah] probably played about 100 gigs in Newcastle since 1996, the first being at Bar on the Hill,” he said. “I have a very special bond with the people of Newcastle. I always have great shows in Newcastle; the audiences are always really, really great.” At Elsewhere: The Rooftop, a quaint, inner-city rooftop venue

at 50 Bolton Street in Newcastle’s architecturally-rich East End, Bob will be supported by rising star Dustin Tebbutt, James Thomson & De’May, Dan Southward and Dave Wells. Tickets are $71.40 for general admission and $260.10 for a fourticket bundle. Visit goelsewhere.oztix.com.au/ Default.aspx?Event=63640 for more information or to buy tickets. - Georgia Osland

RELIVE A TIME LIKE NO OTHER The live music scene in Newcastle during the 1970s and 80s was a time unlike any other. Travelling the road and making records was an expensive venture, meaning bands often thrived on their local scene. As a result you could, without a doubt, find live music at every other pub or club on any night of the week. Dr Gaye Sheather, a historian, researcher and former rock singer, has recorded this important social and historical record of Newcastle in her new book Rock This City. After leaving the band scene in the mid-80s, putting Newcastle’s music history on paper was always something that sat in the back of her mind. Realising she could complete both a PhD and bring together the book she’d always dreamed of, Gaye jumped at the chance. “I was really combining two things that I always wanted to do,

and it made it easier to do it as a PhD. Even though it took a long time and there was lots of data and information to collect, it kept me on track,” Gaye said. While new OH&S, noise and liquor licence regulations means our live music culture may no longer be what it use to be , that doesn’t mean the music scene has disappeared all together. “It was a unique time in music history for Newcastle. Even though there’s a live music scene today, I think it’s very different to what it was back in the 70s and 80s. But I think there’s pockets of it, and I think it’s just about

SATISFY

YOUR SWEET TOOTH If you’re looking for somewhere to satisfy your chocolate craving look no further than Guylian Belgian Chocolate Café in Honeysuckle. With a great water view, food and plenty of chocolate to go around, Guylian Belgian Chocolate Café is the perfect place to relax, unwind and indulge. Desserts, like the 100% Pure Pleasure, are undeniably the café’s biggest drawcards. However there are also plenty of breakfast and lunch items on the menu, from granola and smashed avocado, to salads and baguettes. Living in Honeysuckle for the past six years, café owner Omar Khan felt there was something missing from the area. “Darby Street has a chocolate café and Charlestown has a chocolate café, so I thought let’s open something here for people with a sweet tooth,” Omar said. Awaiting the approval of a liquor licence, the café plans to open its doors to functions including hen’s nights, birthday parties and corporate events. “We think there’s a market for it in Honeysuckle; the venue is beautiful and it would be an ideal location. Even if we have a booking for 40 or 50 people and they want a private function, we can utilize either inside or outside for the event and run the rest as a café.” Guylian Belgian Chocolate Café is located at Shop 3, 15-17 Honeysuckle Drive. - Amy Theodore

Pink blooms for spring We’re springing into spring with pinks. Oasis Horticulture’s Portulaca ‘Pink Parfait’ is lowgrowing and loves the sun and the heat of summer. This colourful annual will be massed in many different shades of pink blooms. Newly released is ‘Pink Passion’, adding to the Wave range of petunias, which have a high tolerance for both heat and cooler conditions. They grow 13 to 18 centimetres tall, spreading from 90 to 121 centimetres. Also available in this range is berry, burgandy and white. Spreading Petunias have become extremely popular during the last couple of years; they favour pink with choices from bright pink through to salmon. Add white and blue for a stunning effect in gardens, pots and hanging baskets. Although Oasis’ spreading geranium is called ‘White’, it also is tinged with pink - pale but with a deeper pink throat. This is the time of year when we remember we have a veggie garden, albeit, it probably needs mulching and fertilising with cow manure at least one week before planting the new tomato for 2016 - Tomato Boss. It is big, pink-coloured and bursting with flavour and will be ready for harvest in nine to 11 weeks. To finish off spring planting, consider Strawberry Delizz which has a compact growth, producing conical shaped berries for about three months. Even if kept indoors it will produce for a month if kept near a well-lit window.

This week • Finish off winter pruning jobs and fertilise. • Spray lawns for bindii and fertilise. • Check new rose growth for aphids and spray with pyrethrum or Malathon.

*Figures gathered from RP Data.

Inner-city housing demand skyrockets he demand for units in Newcastle is becoming unprecedented as the need for inner-city living sky rockets. There has been over $1 billion worth of residential and commercial projects moving ahead since December 2012, not including $460 million dollars the government is injecting into the Wickham interchange and light rail project. With many enquiries from Sydney buyers seeking a sea change to our wonderful city, recent ABS figures show that there are approximately 7000 people moving to the greater Newcastle area per year, which equates to 150 people per week. Also, excited investors are happy to secure inner city property with the university campus due to be completed within the next couple of months. The inner-city transformation continues to gather speed with work to begin on three major apartment developments consisting

With Century 21 Novocastrian residential sales manager, Dean Pinter.

of approximately 700 apartments on offer, which will see three more massive cranes being added to our city skyline within months. If you think we have an oversupply problem it may be time to think again because almost all apartments have been sold off the plan. To give an example, construction has begun on the 14-storey arena development opposite Newcastle beach, with only a few properties out of the 223 still available. The median house price for Newcastle has now climbed above Brisbane, Adelaide and Hobart and is expected to grow a further 5% over the next year despite a predicted “cooling-off” in our market. Also, the median price for units in Newcastle topped $400,000 - a rise over 7%, which is also higher than the Brisbane, Adelaide and Hobart markets. With the Hunter’s population growing by 7,000 people per year, the future is looking bright for our once neglected inner city.

August 26 – September 2

PICK OF THE WEEK Back To The Future Sunday, 7MATE, 7pm, PG (1985) Michael J. Fox’s first outing as time-travelling, guitar-strummin’ teenager Marty McFly is great fun. Sent from the year 1985 to 1955 in a souped-up car invented by crazy scientist Doc Brown (the inimitable Christopher Lloyd, pictured right with J. Fox), Marty embarks on a heart-pounding mission against the clock to unite his parents (Crispin Glover and Lea Thompson) and make sure of his own future existence. Robert Zemeckis’ seminal gem is superb entertainment.

Friday

Red Dragon

Scooby-Doo Friday, GO!, 6pm, PG (2002) The meddling kids of Mystery Inc. switch from animated characters to real people in this adaptation that keeps allusions to the TV cartoon’s famous subtext to a minimum. After going their separate ways after a heated argument, a creepy amusement park entrepreneur (Rowan Atkinson) with an evil plan gives them cause to reunite. Freddie Prinze Jr, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Linda Cardellini give it their best shot, but this one’s a dog.

Tuesday, ONE, 8.30pm, (2002) Director Brett Ratner wheels out cinema’s favourite psychopath for another helping. As Hannibal Lecter, Anthony Hopkins (right) is in familiar territory when his character’s old nemesis, Special Agent Will Graham (Edward Norton), arrives at his cell to ask for help in netting a serial killer (Ralph Fiennes). However, Lecter is more interested in revenge than helping Graham. Red Dragon is satisfying enough (though inferior to Michael Mann’s groundbreaking 1986 adaptation, Manhunter).

The stars are urging Chris to approach even unpleasant jobs with energy and humour. His efforts will fall short if he continues to chop and change and aim for perfection, which is impossible to achieve. Chris will make a difference in the world if he insists on simply being himself. There certainly seems to be bright spots on the horizons for him. Everything he experiences in the next 12 months will teach him something new about himself.

ARIES: MAR 21 - APR 20

CANCER: JUNE 22 - JUL 22

LIBRA: SEPT 24 - OCT 23

CAPRICORN: DEC 22 - JAN 20

With your ruling planet Mars in your 9th house this month, you will be feeling more positive, passionate and productive about life and the universe than you have in some time. On the personal front, a romantic turn of events could be a wonderful surprise.

Now is the ideal time to put a new financial strategy into place and to discuss sensible budgetary measures with your other half or business partner. The chances are that both of you can make savings on unnecessary expenses and relieve yourselves of unwanted debts.

Avoid thinking you can take on the world and win, because if you follow this overly optimistic course, you'll be creating a rod for your own back. Remember to delegate as loved ones, friends and colleagues will be there to help if you let them.

An unusual domestic undertaking will keep you on your toes and getting to know the associates of a friend will be eye-opening. It’s the ideal time to take corrective measures to curtail any spendthrift tendencies and to sort out your fiscal state for the greatest advantage.

TAURUS: APR 21 - MAY 21

LEO: JUL 23 - AUG 23

SCORPIO: OCT 24 - NOV 22

AQUARIUS: JAN 21 - FEB 19

Your schedule is looking busy so do your best to avoid rushing from place to place otherwise strains, sprains and accidents are likely. The planets continue to stimulate your communication and relationship zones. Social media is favoured; the more creative your approach, the more positive the response.

Jupiter moves into Libra in September bringing improved relationships with your children, siblings and loved ones. This is also the ideal time to don your detective cap as you dig up a mystery, uncover a secret or research a topic that has always fascinated you.

Partnerships of all kinds will need a bit of extra work and you must use a measure of tact and diplomacy in order to get what you want out of others. The more you try to manipulate and control the situation, the more challenging it will be.

Your social sphere is under the influence of Mars, the action planet. If you’re happily settled there will be some lucky news for you and your partner. If you’re looking for professional opportunities or business opportunities, your friends will be pointing you in the right direction.

GEMINI: MAY 22 - JUNE 21

VIRGO: AUG 24 - SEPT 23

SAGITTARIUS: NOV 23 - DEC 21

PISCES: FEB 20 - MAR 20

You might be intrigued by a book or film that explores the unknown or be drawn into a discussion of the paranormal. Social interactions might be mixed; kind words and deeds will touch your heart whilst thoughtless comments from others may hurt your feelings.

With Saturn retrograde in your sign, you would be wise to take a step back and view your life from a more positive perspective. Don’t let impatience rule your life this week especially when dealing with hot or sharp objects, otherwise cuts and burns are likely.

There could be good news about your job, the potential to earn extra income or you might receive the recognition that you’ve been working for. Although the promise of high achievement is imminent, avoid overloading your schedule. Don’t store up stressful problems for the future.

Since the beginning of this month, money matters have been in focus. You could be presented with positive opportunities to increase your cash flow and to earn more. There may be a sudden and unexpected trip and a lot to do with relatives and siblings.

A bright new beginning Changes to centre access These closures are necessary for redevelopment to allow the centre to grow, doubling in size and making way for exciting new stores – with the first stage coming online in less than 12 months from now.

From Thursday, 1st September, 2016, the Mitchell Drive/Western carpark, and Western centre entry at Gloria Jean’s will be closed. The stores closing or relocating to accommodate this next phase of work are detailed on the map in green.

Almost 70 stores remain open and trading as usual. Stay with us while we take this journey – bringing a host of new stores to Green Hills, creating thousands of jobs and keeping shopping local to our region.

Access to the centre will be via the travelators and lift, using the undercover carpark – these entries will remain open throughout the development. Dan Murphy’s remains open for trade, accessible off Mitchell Drive only, with customer parking at their door.
