From the editor Well, I'm back on deck after a very relaxing two-week ‘staycation’, during which I caught up on most of my Netflix viewing (Baz Luhrmann’s The Get Down was a definite highlight), got started on the annual spring clean and spent some quality time with my loveable, yet rambunctious two-yearold Staffy, Lola. What I find funny is that, in the lead up to a holiday, it can be quite hard to think of anything else however, by day three, I found myself checking emails, thinking about stories and preventing myself from phoning the office for ‘updates’. Perhaps it's one of life’s great ironies or perhaps it's just a case of ‘the grass is always greener’. At any rate, it’s great to be back. The late, great comedian Robin Williams once said that spring was nature’s way of saying ‘let’s party’. Well, spring has well and truly sprung, here in the Hunter, as evidenced by the gorgeous weather we've been experiencing recently, and what better way to welcome spring than to don your best threads and have a flutter at the upcoming NJC Spring Racing Carnival as our cover, this week, suggests. Turn to page 14 to find out more. Have a great week. - Stephen Bisset

High time for NSW to follow suit on plastic bag ban ingle-use plastic bags: they’re banned in four Australian states and territories, but in New South Wales, they continue to pose an environmental threat.
The Lake Macquarie Sustainable Neighbourhood Alliance is calling on the NSW government to follow the ACT, South Australia, Tasmania and Northern Territory’s lead and
ban single-use plastic bags. In those states and territories, shoppers must bring their own bags or pay for plastic bags. It is estimated four billion plastic bags are used across the country each year, with about 50 million of those ending up in our environment. Lake Macquarie Sustainable Neighbourhood Alliance board member Steve Dewar said it was a major problem in Lake Macquarie. To address the issue, the alliance, which is made up of 15 local sustainable neighbourhood groups, has collected more than 600 signatures on a petition addressed to the state government. The alliance is working with Plastic Bag Free NSW, a body of various conservation groups and projects, which lobbies the state government. Signatures are still pouring in, and the alliance will continue to collect them at environmental events, including the upcoming
Living Smart Festival at Speers Point Park on 24 September, and West Wallsend District Sustainable Neighbourhood Group’s Old Waste, New Art competition at Holmesville Community Hall on 8 October. The alliance will hold a stall at the Living Smart Festival in conjunction with Ocean Action Pod, which will give a demonstration on how plastics affect marine life. It is through these educational campaigns the alliance hopes to spread the word. And so far, it’s worked. A recent survey completed by the Toronto Sustainable Neighbourhood Group indicates about 60% of businesses in the area have moved away from single-use plastic bags. However, Mr Dewar said these were mostly independent businesses, and that the big chain supermarkets needed to come to the table to have any real effect. - Georgia Osland

Seeing his neighbour grapple with dementia was what inspired Paul Adamson to volunteer for an inpatient program at a local hospital to help others in the same boat. Twice a week for the past four years, Paul has devoted his time to helping patients with eating meals, reading newspapers and magazines, listening to music and playing board games as a volunteer for Maitland Hospital’s Delirium and Dementia Program. Sometimes he takes patients for a walk; other times he just sits with them, providing a reassuring presence for patients confused or anxious about being in hospital. “Being in hospital can be an anxious time for any patient, but it is even more unsettling for people who may not fully understand where they are or why they are there,” Paul said. “It is gratifying to be able to help when people need company and reassurance.” Paul said the program had “changed his life”, which is why, ahead of the program’s roll-out at John Hunter Hospital, he is asking people with a bit of extra
time on their hands to consider volunteering for the program. The hospital’s Volunteer Services department will be recruiting volunteers over the next two to four weeks. The program will be modelled on Maitland Hospital’s, and volunteers will become an integral part of the care team for high-needs dementia and delirium patients. Acting Manager of Volunteer Services at John Hunter Hospital, Kristine Burke, said the program made a real difference to people with these conditions. “Staff do an excellent job with the healthcare of patients, but they don’t have the capacity be with them all the time,” she said. “Volunteers play an important role in providing essential emotional support. They can help patients escape the hustle and bustle of hospital that can be so unsettling.” Training is provided, so volunteers need no previous experience. To enquire, phone Ms Burke on 4922 3009. - Georgia Osland

Nominations for the 2017 round are now open. Athletes go for gold The 2016 Rio Paralympics kicked off on Wednesday, with five past and present Hunter athletes representing the region. Charlestown’s Erin Cleaver (athletics), Merewether’s Christie Dawes (athletics), Newcastle’s Kurt Fearnley and Gillieston Heights’ Maddison Elliot (swimming) will all go for gold.
Former Novocastrian Prue Watt, who now lives in Edgecliff, will also be competing in swimming. Overall, 277 Australians will represent the nation – 89 of whom will be making their Paralympic debut.
Crisis accommodation gap A Hunter MP has flagged the need for more crisis accommodation for domestic violence victims. Member for Maitland and Shadow Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, Jenny Aitchison, said the Baird government’s 2014 reforms that merged specialist women’s domestic violence services with general homelessness services had resulted in bed reductions across the state. She said the Department of Family and Community Services had advised her there were 523 bedrooms and 1430 beds across the state, with the capacity to accommodate up to 1900 women and children, which was not enough. Ms Aitchison called upon Pru Goward, the Minister for the prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, to take
responsibility and address the issue. When pressed on refuge capacity in her electorate of Goulbourn during parliament question time, Ms Goward “passed the buck” to Minister for Family and Community Services Brad Hazzard, Ms Aitchison said. “How can the minister not know what’s happening in the provision of refuge beds across the state, or at the very least know what’s going on in her own electorate?”
Blackalls bat solution Blackalls Park’s bat problem is in the spotlight once more, with Lake Macquarie council inviting community feedback on a draft flying fox management plan. Over the past few years, bats have colonised in increasing numbers at Fennell Crescent, Blackalls Park. Newcastle Weekly reported in July that bats had irreparably damaged resident Lorraine Harvey’s property and plagued her with incessant noise and putrid smells. To provide feedback on the council’s plan, visit haveyoursaylakemac.com.au/flying-foxcamp-management-plan. Submissions close 5pm Friday 30 September.

The Love Is in the Air Debutante Ball celebrates the lives and achievements of dancers with special needs. Hosted by Waltz-sing Matildas, a dance group run by parents and carers for people with intellectual disabilities, the event was originally suggested by parents who wouldn’t get the chance to see their children marry. “Many people may think a debutante ball is a bit outdated, but this is about celebrating the couples, how far they’ve come and what they’ve achieved,” dance instructor Carolyn Thoroughgood said. Established in 2002 by nine parents, Waltz-sing Matildas has since grown to 110 members and expanded to include a number of dance styles including bush dancing, line dancing, Zumba and hip-hop. The Love Is in the Air Debutante Ball will be held on Saturday 17 September from 6pm to 10pm at Wests City. Tickets are $60 per person and include a two-course dinner and dancing. To buy tickets, phone Carolyn Thoroughgood on 0417 696 323.

Change A Heart representatives Alicia Howell, Norm Henderson and Fran Howell present a Broselow Trolley to Cessnock Hospital.
Norm’s heart of gold Norm Henderson is your average bloke; a little soft around the edges and a softie at heart. But over the years, persistent asthma and a heart condition have affected the way he goes about life. Despite this, every second year you’ll find him taking on a self-set challenge of cycling several hundred kilometres on local cycleways in a given number of days.
He does this to raise money for medical equipment for children who are also affected by heart and respiratory conditions. “When you’re affected by these things it’s particularly terrifying,” he said. “Now imagine that for a three-year old. That’s why we do what we do.” By “we”, Norm means the Change A Heart charity.
Norm established the charity in late 2012. The very next year, he cycled 600 kilometres in 15 days and raised thousands of dollars towards vital medical equipment for local hospitals. Last year, he rode 500 kilometres in 10 days, which he plans to repeat in May for his last ride. “I’ll be 50 next year so I’m getting on,” he said. In conjunction with the biennial ride, the charity hosts its Change A Heart Golf Day each year at various locations. The first two years it was held at Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley; last year’s was at Belmont Golf Club; and this year’s, coming up on Friday 16 September, will be held at Charlestown Golf Club. All of this has raised more than $25,000 for equipment at local hospitals, including John Hunter Hospital, Maitland Hospital and Cessnock Hospital. Although Norm will be calling it a day after next year, donations will still be taken online via give. everydayhero.com/au/change_a_heart. Tickets to the upcoming golf day are $85 and include a golf cart, breakfast and lunch. Tee-off is at 8am. To register, call Charlestown Golf Club on 4943 7944 or email Norm on nj.1967@hotmail.com. - Georgia Osland

RUSSIAN DANCERS EN POINT FOR ICONIC BALLET
Having enjoyed a sold-out Australian run of performances of Swan Lake last year, the Imperial Russian Ballet is returning to our shores with another iconic ballet – The Nutcracker. Based on Alexandre Dumas’ adaptation of E.T.A Hoffman’s story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, the ageless tale of bravery and dreams, with a score written by Tchaikovsky, The Nutcracker was first performed at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg in 1892 and has since gone on to become one of the best known and best-loved ballets in history. Aside from the jaw-dropping feats of skill displayed by the highly disciplined cast, this production will
see the company enlist the help of students from local ballet schools across the country and choreographer and teacher Arcadie Nazarenco has been busy putting up and coming dancers through their paces in time for the performance (Nazarenco and dancer Radamaria Duminica recently led a class at Lambton’s National College of Dance). “We have spent a few weeks working with young children and, yes, you have some true talent in
Australia,” Nazarenco told Newcastle Weekly. Nazarenco added he believed the reason the ballet was still being performed some 124 years since it’s debut performance was its appeal to all ages. “It is a very interesting performance because it is great for the children and it is also great for the adults.” The Imperial Russian Ballet will perform The Nutcracker at the Civic Theatre on Thursday 15 September.

STRINGER BURNS NO BRIDGES
Hot on the heels of her critically lauded fifth record, All The Bridges, Melbourne singer-songwriter Liz Stringer will be in the Hunter this month for two special shows. Recorded over eight days in Portland Oregon with producer Adam Selzer (The Decemberists, Jolie Holland, Fleet Foxes), All The Bridges is a deeply layered and lush affair that seamlessly marries
the new West Coast sound with lush, layered vocals, folk and rock and roll. Anyone, the album’s lead single, with it’s driving beat and delay-loaded lead guitar, manages to echo homages to classic 80’s rock and roll with Liz’s distinctive smokey vocal at the centre. A regular visitor to our fair region, Liz will be in good

FEED YOUR STOMACH AND YOUR SOUL If you stroll along Elder Street in Lambton and faintly hear the classic tunes of Frank Sinatra in the distance, there’s a good chance it’s coming from The Vintage Rose Café. With a passion for antiques, owner Nevine Adlum always wanted to combine her love for vintage pieces in a café setting. Filled with French provincial and ‘shabby-chic’ décor, the café’s organic dishes are made with fresh produce and herbs from the café’s own garden. There are options for vegans, vegetarians and meat-lovers. The café also offers cuisine quite different from what you’d find in your average eatery, including Mediterranean, European and Moroccan. With a courtyard almost

ready for opening, it’s the perfect place to head for a spot of lunch during the week or on a sunny Saturday. Not only do they provide quality food, the café also helps those in need. “As a goodwill café, we support third-world countries through Baptist World Aid,” Nevine said. “They help these communities by providing aid for water, food, education – that sort of thing. “We’re blessed with so much; it’s a good opportunity to give to those in need. If you can bless someone else’s life, you get a blessing in return.” The Vintage Rose Café is located at 128 Elder Street, Lambton. - Amy Theodore

RENOVATING
IN THE GARDEN JUDY SHARPE
reno romantics
Down a narrow lane in the backstreets of Carrington sits a quaint, Californian desert-inspired abode with a neat cactus garden out front and a cosy courtyard out back. The home belongs to Mitch and Sophie Friend (and their two cats Texas and Raphael), a construction management student and a primary school teacher, who have spent the better part of the last six months renovating the two-and-a-half bedroom home. Compared to what it looked like when they bought it in December, the home is almost completely unrecognisable. They have done away with lime green walls and cringeworthy curtains and transformed the home into a beautiful, contemporary space accentuated by a soft, pastel palette. But the home’s crowning glory is its backyard, where Mitch and Sophie were married in April in front of an intimate gathering of family and friends. The backyard (peppered with cactuses and flamingos, of course) features a commanding concrete wall that gives the entire space a modern industrial feel. To this they have added a stained timber deck and a pebble courtyard with outdoor chairs. But perhaps the most surprising thing about this reno is that Mitch and Sophie have spent less than $12,000. With only the kitchen to go – an area on which they have agreed to spend the most
WITH HOME EDITOR, GEORGIA OSLAND
amount of money – the pair have been careful not to overcapitalise. “There’s no point in dumping $60,000 on a reno and then trying to sell it and only making a $60,000 profit,” Mitch said. By forward planning and setting realistic goals; salvaging what they could from the house’s former days, including newly-laid carpet; and saving on trades by doing much of the handiwork themselves (except when they needed an electrician, which they advise not to cut corners on), they have managed to stick to their budget. A few coats of fresh paint worked more wonders than they thought possible, particularly in the bathroom, which they did up for $1200. It came up a treat with a little extra help from new fixtures and a new vanity. And while Sophie admits that patience is neither her nor Mitch’s strongest suit, they waited for sales to buy new things for their home, on everything from plants to furnishings. Much of their furniture and homewares came from Fantastic Furniture, Kmart, Target and IKEA, but Sophie warns not to over-cheapen the look by going too overboard. She added a mixture of vintage and handmade items to balance it out. Now they are content in their “dream little suburb”.

Ramble On One of the top events on the spring garden calendar is the annual Maitland Garden Ramble (17 and 18 September). This year, eight of Maitland’s most beautiful gardens will be open on Saturday and Sunday from 1am to 4pm. I wish I had enough space to give you, the readers, vivid descriptions of each garden, some of which are sited on acreages, some offering stalls and lunches, whilst several feature garden talks. Tickets and brochures are available from the Maitland Visitor Centre, Heritage Gardens Nursery, Bolwarra Cafe and Sharpe’s City Gardener at Merewether. There is a shuttle bus which departs from Maitland Railway Station, but tickets must be pre-purchased through the Maitland Visitor Centre. The Rumble Garden at Bolwarra Heights will feature on Sunday only, a rose talk by Peter Hill at 10.30am and 2.30pm. “Trill Cottage” at Bolwarra is a great example of what can be achieved in an average sized garden. Aberglasslyn House and Pinehurst House are two lovely historical gardens and a visit to the Steggles Garden allows the opportunity to have problems and plants identified by the Horticultural Institute Clinic.
This week • Prevent yellowing leaves on gardenias by applying cow manure and keeping the plant well watered while it is setting buds. • Lawns are actively growing, making it an ideal time to fertilise. • Give newly planted petunias and tomatoes a boost with Flourish. • Aphids are attacking new growth on citrus. Spray those pesky black insects with Malathon or pyrethrum.

expert advice
recent sales
Spring into the market In real estate, spring is viewed as the busiest time of the year for both buyers and sellers. Sellers are busy getting the final touches in place to get their home on the market; paintwork is being touched up, gardens tidied and flowers added for colour. As a seller preparing your home for sale, one piece of advice I would give is you never get a second chance at a first impression. You should walk through your home imagining you are a potential buyer. It is worthwhile spending a little time on the details, which can make a significant difference to the time it takes to sell and the price you achieve. For buyers, spring means more new stock after the quiet winter with a limited amount of properties. To ensure that you are the first to know about the new stock, there are a couple of things that you should put in place. The first is to ensure that you have your finance in place and you are ready to make an offer as soon
as you see the right home. By doing this you will speed up the process to secure the right property once you find it. All that will need to be done is a valuation of the property that you are looking at to ensure it is worth what you have agreed to pay. The second recommendation I would give to buyers in this busy spring market is to let the agents in the area you’d like to live know about the type of property you’d like to buy and the amount you’re looking to spend. Another tip here is to go onto realestate.com.au and set yourself up as a buyer and enter the type of property that you’re looking for. As soon as a new property that matches your tastes is listed in the area, you will be sent an email with a link.

‘Knowledgeable. Trustworthy. Respectful. Professional.’ Grateful thanks to Michael Hughes and Debbie Wiseman for the excellent job they did with the recent selling of my house. Their expert advice to a novice house-seller was most welcome, ensuring a smooth transition from advertising and open-house inspections to a more-than-satisfying end result at auction. I was kept informed of updates throughout the proceedings in a courteous manner, and both Michael and Debbie were more than approachable for answers to my many questions and to dispel any anxieties. An effective touch from them was to make the history of the house an integral part of the selling process.

PICK OF THE WEEK Elizabeth
Old School
Friday, SBS, 8.35pm, MA15+ (1998) Cate Blanchett made her name in Hollywood with this multi-awardwinning historical drama based on the early rule of Queen Elizabeth I. Going against the grain of stately Merchant Ivory costume dramas, its characters are incredibly vivid and, coupled with Shekhar Kapur’s atmospheric and intimate direction, absolutely believable. With an excellent supporting cast, including Geoffrey Rush and Christopher Eccleston, Elizabeth is an absorbing drama that outshines its sequel The Golden Age.
Friday
Saturday, GO!, 9.45pm, MA15+ (2003) Todd Phillips, the director who gave us the uproariously funny The Hangover, first brought us this surprisingly memorable tale of three 30-something pals (Luke Wilson, Vince Vaughn and a show-stealing Will Ferrell) who try to shake off the shackles of marriage and careers by starting their own college frat house. Despite the inevitable pants-down pranks, Old School is more than just a slew of familiar gross-out gags. Phillips draws perceptive and farcical laughs from these men in the midst of mid-life crises.
Kill Bill: Vol. 2
Monday, GO!, 9pm, MA15+ (2004) Betrayed former assassin, The Bride (Uma Thurman, right), continues on her path of vengeance – two down, three to go – in Quentin Tarantino’s aweinspiring action duplet. If Vol. 1 was the ultimate Saturday-night drive-in special, then the adrenalin rush subsides for Vol. 2, a character study in which spaghetti western motifs are spectacularly juxtaposed with Tarantino’s pop-culture obsession (just wait till you hear his concept of Superman mythology). It all adds up to pure genius, and Thurman’s endurance is nothing short of miraculous.

With Jupiter in Libra, Chris will be a force to be reckoned with. At times he will add his own brand of magic to any sort of social or creative get-together. On the financial and property front he will be getting some good news and if there is any sort of official matter to deal with this is a positive time for sorting it out. Family plans will also move forward in a positive direction.

ARIES: MAR 21 - APR 20
CANCER: JUNE 22 - JUL 22
LIBRA: SEPT 24 - OCT 23
CAPRICORN: DEC 22 - JAN 20
You may find an imaginative way to cut through a backlog of tasks that seems to be obscuring your view. Don't exaggerate your abilities and only promise what you can deliver. Now that spring is in the air, it’s the ideal time to focus on your fitness.
Jupiter is in your 4th house and money matters become your main focus. Your ability to generate cash will be on the rise as golden opportunities are there for the taking. However, there are also likely to be a number of expenses to deal with, so don't be too extravagant.
Jupiter is in Libra and your social life steps into overdrive, you'll experience a deep need for companionship. You’re going to be joining a club or meeting new people who are especially intriguing and one or two of them may have some interesting ideas to put your way.
Jupiter is in your 10th house indicating
LEO: JUL 23 - AUG 23
SCORPIO: OCT 24 - NOV 22
The Libran Sun makes you very gregarious this month, so make the time to contact friends and relatives that you haven't spoken to for some time. You're really in the mood to let your hair down and could find a social event a real confidence booster.
September is the ideal time to network as friends have a powerful effect on your future prospects. Favours you've done for others will bring added rewards, as loved ones go out of their way to spoil you. This is the ideal time to put your finances into order.
VIRGO: AUG 24 - SEPT 23
SAGITTARIUS: NOV 23 - DEC 21
If you feel tired and exhausted, it's possible that you've been taking on too much just to show how impressive you can be. The fact is that you need some quiet time and an undemanding day or two, so make sure you get them.
Jupiter is in your 3rd house making it an ideal time to plan a trip overseas or to explore new neighbourhoods. There will also be a powerful attraction to spiritual matters. News from loved ones at a distance will also cheer you up.
TAURUS: APR 21 - MAY 21 Let your creativity shine at work by closely analysing a situation and then make a direct approach to your boss with the answer; your resourcefulness is certain to impress. A lot of energy will be invested into your domestic life, this is the ideal time to de-clutter, renovate or move.
GEMINI: MAY 22 - JUNE 21 Jupiter is in Libra, so your intelligence shines. You are particularly persuasive and can easily win friends and influence people. This will be a hectic month as the phone rings off the hook and your inbox overflows. Be careful of being too outspoken as it will only lead to arguments.
this should be a truly positive time on the professional front. Regardless of anything else that is happening in your life, your career ambitions are going to be your top priority. If you’re academically minded, you will be doing extremely well.
AQUARIUS: JAN 21 - FEB 19 Jupiter is in your romance sector and now is your chance to show that special someone just how much they mean to you. What you gain from giving a sense of relaxed generosity will more than make up for a dent in your wallet.
PISCES: FEB 20 - MAR 20 Mars is in your 10th house and you will be forced to stand out at work, as your knowledge and expertise come to the fore. Even though you have the promise of high achievement coming up, it's important not to overload your schedule or take on more than you can handle.

If your little ones are enthralled by the adventures of Peppa Pig, then this trio of games will keep them occupied for hours. The Peppa Pig Snap Card Game is Peppa’s take on the classic game of snap with all your favourite characters. The Wooden Clock Puzzle helps teach the concept of a clock with this self-correcting Lift & Look puzzle. Be the first player to place your last game piece on the pile in the Peppa Pig Pile Up Game. Balance your piece carefully and don’t let it fall!
Newcastle Weekly has four Peppa Pig prize packs (including Peppa Pig Snap Card Game, Peppa Pig Wooden Clock Puzzle and Peppa Pig Pile up Game) to give away. Email competitions@newcastleweekly.com.au to enter with ‘Peppa Pig’ in the subject line. Tell us your name, full contact details and two characters from the Peppa Pig universe. Entries close and winners drawn at 9am on Friday 16 September. One entry per person. Permit No. LTPM 16-00488
