From the editor Last week, after leaving a job at the brilliant Newcastle Art Space in Parry Street (see story page 24), I was the victim of a cowardly, unprovoked assault.

The offender in question was no drunken hoodlum or malingering thug, but none other than a magpie.

As I was minding my own business, thinking about the day that lay before me, this winged malevolence swooped down, slammed into the side of my head and took a considerable nip of my earlobe (no stitches thankfully, but a fair bit of blood).

Before I knew what happened, it was on its way back to the heights of the tree tops to scope out another unsuspecting victim, leaving me with the task of applying antiseptic to my wounded ear and enduring various Mike Tyson/ Evander Holyfield jokes around the office (all in good fun, of course).

Given that the last time I was attacked thusly was as a pre-teen at a Maitland Junior Soccer Club (ironically named the Magpies) annual presentation picnic at Paterson, I have barely given avian swoopings a second thought.

However, this summer, you can be sure I’ll approach every tree I pass with a due sense of trepidation and dread.

So, when you’re out and about this magpie season, be wary. Keep watching the skies and don’t become another statistic.

Greater support needed for families of ice addicts The community conduit for drug and alcohol-related issues has echoed a Hunter MP’s call for more funding to support people battling crystal methamphetamine (ice) addiction.

“Families can go through an equally significant amount of trauma and dislocation [from ice addiction].

“It can be a really tough time for parents and friends to see someone they love succumb to an addiction. They need somewhere to turn that can show them the pathways to get through it.”

According to Mr Brown, about 3% of the Australian population battles with ice addiction, but alcohol is still the community’s biggest problem.

He said local, state and federal governments needed to collaborate to develop a national, evidence-based strategy, which should tackle not only ice, but all illicit substance abuse.

Only then, he said, can the issue truly be addressed.

Motion in parliament, calling on the NSW government to extend drug treatment and intervention funding to programs that focus on helping not only drug addicts, but their families, too.

The Samaritans already runs a program called Recovery Point, helping ex-prisoners and those leaving rehab centres transition back into society, and is looking to expand its programs to support addicts’ families by equipping them with additional resources.

However, there is no funding for this within the government’s current model.

Mr Brown said it was clear, from a CDAT community forum held last November, that there was an “authentic demand” for the need to create a network to help families help their loved ones.

Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson has called on the government to bridge the digital divide in the Hunter. Ms Swanson met with Labor’s Regional Communications spokesperson Stephen Jones, last week, to discuss poor internet connection and delays in the National Broadband Network roll-out.

A digital inclusion index report, released earlier this year, found that the Hunter region ranked the lowest nationally on internet access, affordability, and the digital ‘ability’ of residents. Mr Jones said households and small businesses deserved better. “Being offline today means missing out,” he said. Ms Swanson said the coalition must take immediate steps to address the growing digital divide between urban and regional communities.

Susan Foster, of the Mount Hutton Windale Residents Action Group, said the council had repaired part of the cement drain that fed into the natural creek.

Charter Hall, which owns Lake Macquarie Fair, also held a community planting day yesterday (Wednesday 12 October). Newcastle Weekly first reported in June that the creek was choked with rubbish and overgrown with noxious weeds, blocking it at several points and causing overflow in times of rain. Ms Foster said, while it was good action had been taken, more needed to be done.

The community’s cry for a solution to the traffic and road safety issues surrounding Hillsborough Road, Warners Bay has been partially answered.

Member for Charlestown Jodie Harrison said she had been told Roads and Maritime Services would likely install pedestrian barrier fencing along a busy section of the road, near where 15-year-old Jade Frith was fatally hit by a car in April, though the timeline was unclear.

The possibility of moving the bus stop opposite Playgrounds Park Action Sports Training

Facility closer to the pedestrian traffic signals in front of Lee Rowan’s Garden World was also discussed.

This was in response to a 14,000-signature petition that Ms Harrison brought to the parliament for debate.

The petition’s aim was to replace the roundabout at the intersection of Hillsborough Road, Macquarie Road, Medcalf Street and King Street with a four-way set of traffic lights, however, this might not be off the table altogether. The RMS is reportedly assessing the cost of these works.

A very sparkly silver lining Never in a million years did Adamstown Heights’ Candice Sherriff think pageantry would bring her closer to her late mother, but that’s exactly what it’s done.

Candice, mother to sons Joshua and Luke and wife to Gary, took Newcastle by surprise last year when she won the title of Mrs Galaxy Australia 2015 in March.

It was her first pageant; a challenge she decided to set herself after moving to Australia from South Africa with her family in 2012.

“I’m so used to being a maid, a taxi driver, a nurse – this was something different I could do for myself,” she said.

Candice competed in the world final in Orlando, Florida in August that year, but missed out on a place in the top three.

However, towards the end of the year, she discovered something that would further cement her zest for pageantry.

She and her husband’s working visas had expired, so, to qualify for permanent residency in Australia, they had to undergo physical exams.

During her exam, Candice noted that her mother, Irene Mead, had passed away from cancer.

“I never knew what type of cancer it was; it wasn’t going to bring her back so what

did it matter,” she said.

Candice reached out to her sister and found that their mother had had ovarian cancer, which came as a surprise, given that the organisation that coordinates pageants in Australia, MAQuest, aims to raise awareness of ovarian cancer through its Newcastle-based charity, Teal Wings of Hope.

“It’s nice, because it’s one way that I can still connect to [mum],” Candice said.

After taking out the Mrs World Australia 2016 title in May, Candice is bound for the world final in South Korea on 25 October, where she will compete against a minimum of 60 women from all over the globe. “I hope I make mum proud,” she said.

news Feathered friends to be counted First it was us human Aussies to be counted in the 2016 Census and soon it will be our avian friends’ turn when the 2016 Aussie Backyard Bird Count kicks off, later this month.

The national initiative, run by Birdlife Australia, aims to track bird populations across the country to give a clearer picture of how our winged creatures are faring and Cardiff Sustainable Neighbourhood Group (CASNG), along with the Hunter Bird Observers Club, are getting involved by hosting a free BBQ at Wilkinson Park to help people get into the bird counting mood.

“You don’t have to be a bird nerd to take part in this great initiative, it’s about ordinary people getting out into their backyards and local bushlands to do their bit for the Aussie bird population,” CASNG spokesman Barry Shepherd told Newcastle Weekly.

All you need is a spare 20 minutes in your favorite outdoor space and some keen eyesight.

“You just have to record the birds you can see and hear and you can submit the results via a really great Bird Count app (via aussiebirdcount.org.au).

Big boost for Maitland sport The upgrade of Maitland’s athletics centre was given a shot in the arm, last week, with the announcement of a state government grant of $5.5million.

The upgrade of the current Smyth Field facilities will include an international-standard synthetic running track, athletics facilities, a clubhouse, floodlighting and additional parking.

The upgrade forms part of the wider plan for the development of the Maitland Regional Sportsground Complex.

“This is fantastic news for our community,” Mayor Peter Blackmore said. “Sport is an integral part of the fabric of Maitland an the athletics community will be thrilled with this announcement.”

The Maitland Regional Sportsground Complex is jointly funded by the Hunter Infrastructure and Development Fund and Maitland City Council.

Rocking good time for charity Swing dresses, dancing shoes, a dancefloor and some rocking tunes – for the Newcastle 50’s Rock n Roll Club, these are not only the key ingredients to a good time, but a way to give back to the local community.

Established in 1995, the social dance club meets every Tuesday night at Kahibah Sports Club for beginner and intermediate four-step rock n roll classes, while raising money for various charities.

Over the years, the club has donated more than $70,000 to worthy causes big and small, including OzHarvest, the Cancer Council’s Bald & Beautiful, the Hunter Prostate Cancer Alliance, John Hunter Children’s Hospital and many more.

It does this by holding raffles each week, from which a fair

portion of the proceeds go towards the club’s charity kitty.

On average, the club donates about $500 to a different charity each month, although the amount varies and the club has, in the past, donated to up to three charities at a time.

On the last Tuesday of every month, the club holds a lesson-free night, where they bring in a band for anybody who loves to dance rock and roll to come along and have some fun.

Usually these events attract even more donations.

All money raised stays within the Hunter region.

Club secretary Judy Went, who has been with the club for 18 years, said it was a way for members to have fun while giving back to the community.

“When people ring up enquire about us and we tell them we do a lot of charity work, they often say that’s what they like about us,” she said.

“We just want everyone to know about the work that we do.”

Since its inception, the club has grown to more than 400 members, from the young to the young at heart.

Most of the club’s members are over 50, but Judy said the club welcomed younger dancers.

And, if raising money every week wasn’t enough, some members also perform at demonstrations at aged-care facilities and churches.

About 15 members put on a show for the elderly residents at SummitCare Wallsend last week.

Hunter TAFE students get appy A new app, aimed at enhancing the experience of students studying at Hunter TAFE campuses, has been launched.

Developed by local creative agency Headjam, the app, which can be used on both Android and iPhone mobile platforms and tablets is integrated with Google Maps for all 15 Hunter TAFE campuses and has the ability to find key Hunter TAFE services including the location of buildings, libraries, public transport, cafes and amenities. It also provides directions between campuses.

Hunter TAFE Institute director, Christine Warrington, said the idea for developing the app came from the need to better communicate with students.

Community rallies to keep hospital public

“The Hunter TAFE app is part of putting the customer at the centre of our business,” she said.

“We know that online and digital communication is the preferred way to communicate and we wanted to ensure we could offer a communication channel students were comfortable and familiar with.

“It includes answers to frequently asked questions, good news, event information and a social feed, and provides us with the ability to instantly deliver information to students with campus alerts and important messages.”

The Maitland Community Unions Alliance will rally at Maitland Train Station on Sunday 23 October to protest privatisation plans for the new Lower Hunter Hospital in Maitland.

The NSW government announced, last month, plans to privatise hospital redevelopments at Maitland, Wyong, Goulburn, Shellharbour and Bowral.

On its Facebook event page, the alliance that this was done “with no consultation” and it was “a further step in the Americanisation of our health system”.

The rally will be held from 12pm to 2pm and everyone is welcome.

Salvos take the worry out of wills The Salvation Army will be helping people of the Hunter get their affairs in order with the annual Salvos Wills Day on Tuesday 25 October.

The Wills Day is a service offered to Newcastle and Hunter residents once a year, with generous local solicitors volunteering their time and expertise to give people the opportunity to have a simple will prepared or updated for the significantly reduced cost of $50.

Jeans bring special message and support

Many hands make light work The Hunter’s most prolific volunteering campaign, CityServe, is on again this month.

Powered by collaboration, the annual, month-long initiative will see community and public facilities repainted and repaired; parks mulched and street spaces painted and cleaned; schools and childcare centres painted; and playgrounds restored.

All of this is achieved by a dedicated army of volunteers, who donate their time to travel to various sites around Newcastle and Lake Macquarie to undertake the work.

Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser said, this year, more than 20 sites were registered across Lake Macquarie.

The creative genius of our customers and supporters is on display at our Wallsend store.

Wangi cracks a ton

Lake access boost at Warners Bay A stepped sandstone seawall has been installed along the foreshore at Warners Bay that will improve access to the lake.

Lake Macquarie Council’s assets manager Glen Walker said the new seawall was made up of about 400 sandstone blocks and formed part of the first stage of the Warners Bay Foreshore Master Plan.

“As well as helping to protect the foreshore from erosion, this new structure, with its stepped design, will provide additional seating for visitors to this popular lakeside reserve and make it easier for people to access the water,” Mr Walker said.

The new sandstone seawall replaces old infrastructure that was damaged during last year’s April storm.

Wangi Wangi will come alive next weekend when the suburb celebrates the centenary of the first sale of land at Wangi Point.

Wangi Area Sustainable Neighbourhood Group coordinator Bruce Macfarlane said it was an exciting time for the historic community.

“In 1916, the first sale of land occurred at Wangi Point and the town has grown into a tight-knit lake-side community since then,” he said. “To celebrate, community groups, residents, businesses and the local school have all come together to put on the biggest celebration Wangi has ever seen.”

The event, to be held on Sunday 23 October, will feature a classic car show, rides and market stalls, historic memorabilia, croquet, barefoot bowls, a sausage sizzle, art exhibitions, gala dinner and dance, and much more.

“We hope the event will bring the community together while celebrating the rich history of our town and the community spirit here in Wangi.”

While there’s much to be said about coffee’s resurgence in the Hunter, it’s fair to say its age-old cousin, tea, has stood the test of time.

ore and more authentic tea rooms are cropping up in the region, and plenty of establishments now offer high tea services. No longer are we confined to the realm of English breakfasts and Earl Greys; there are an abundance of loose leaf tisanes to please every palette, from the sharp and fruity to the rich and aromatic.

One of the new kids on the block in Newcastle, The Tea Project, has whittled tea service down to a fine art.

The two-time Golden Leaf Award-winning tea room, dubbed the best in NSW, stocks about

100 varieties of exotic, fragrant teas that line the shelves as far as the eye can see.

Owner Becci Fowler, who set up shop in King Street a year ago, says there’s something truly special about the tea experience that coffee just cannot replicate.

“Tea is totally different to coffee,” she said.

“Newcastle’s great for coffee, but tea is different, in that you have to stop, relax and unwind – that’s the whole idea of it.

“It takes five minutes to brew and in this day and age, that’s a lot to commit to.”

To that end, brewing tea is no easy feat; each tea, Becci says, must be brewed at a certain temperature for a certain time.

The proof, though, is in the pudding – well, in this case, the cup.

As more tea rooms and tea-serving cafés pop up, the demand for the product only increases.

Becci says she barely finds enough time in her day to stop and smell the roses herself, with a constant stream of customers trickling through the shop.

One notable characteristic of tea is its many uses; the beverage itself can be served hot or cold, with or without milk, and it can be used to flavour cocktails, cakes and even gelato, as Becci has found.

Some teas have been known to induce labour in expectant mothers, and, of course, tea is at the heart of many ancient rituals around the globe.

When it comes to music that stirs the soul, there isn’t much more emotive than the sound of Scottish pipes and drums.

Further, there are few who do it as well as the pipes and drums of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, who will be heading to Newcastle next week for a special performance at the Civic Theatre.

Producer Tony Brady told Newcastle Weekly that the audience could expect something a little different from a traditional marching band. “It will be spectacular,” he said. “As the producer, I can’t wait to see it,” he said.

“There will be 25 musicians, dancers and singers onstage and all of the musicians will be in full ceremonial uniform and they will

Gallery deserves more than one visit On Hunter Street, between Darby Street and the start of the Mall, is the bright orange sign of Gallery Sixty One Revisited. Opened in May 2015, initially as The Gallery of Modern Shart by owner Caroline Christie, the gallery quickly found itself within Newcastle’s independent gallery scene. It has provided an alternative space for artists to exhibit quirky, experimental and non-conformist artwork. With the gallery describing its exhibits as “art that is diverse, beautiful, ugly, fine, terrible, funny, sad, passionate, uplifting, heartbreaking, brave and never ordinary”.

A nomad at heart, Caroline spent a decade traveling the world between studying Fine Art at Newcastle and Sydney while living in Melbourne and New York before starting her gallery. It is this yearning for change that has brought her to the tough decision to close Gallery Sixty One Revisited at the end of this year.

“For now at least,” Caroline said.

“It’s been such a rewarding experience for me, to be able to help expose new and different emerging talent while encouraging emerging artists of all ages”.

While news that the Newcastle Community Art Centre site (which houses Newcastle Art Space,Tantrum Youth Arts, Trees for Newcastle and the Black Box Theatre) was to be sold, left tenants uncertain about their futures, it seems that, while bittersweet, the future is still bright.

Jordan Fardell, co-director of Newcastle Art Space (NAS), told Newcastle Weekly there were more than a few options on the table. “We have to move by the end of January – we have an end date of 2 February,” she said.

“Our last exhibition will be in December and then we’ll be moving out. We have a few sites in mind for the whole centre and are currently in negotiation with a few venues.

But, at the moment it looks like it will be a short-term solution rather

Featuring a line-up that includes Ross Wilson, Richard Clapton, Wendy Matthews, Thirsty Merc, Rose Tattoo and many more, this bill is basically a ‘who’s who’ of Aussie rock and roll over the past three decades.

For Wendy Matthews, the opportunity to play shows like this affords her the chance to have just as much fun backstage as she does onstage.

“Shows like this are always such a good time,” she said.

“It’s a chance for audiences to hear some classic songs from their youth as well as giving us artists a chance to have a good old catch-up backstage.”

Mathews, an ex-pat Canadian, first came to Australia singing backing vocals for Glenn Shorrock’s 1983 Australian tour.

Liking it so much, she stayed and sang on albums by the likes of Jimmy Barnes, Icehouse and Tim Finn and was a regular vocalist for The Models. Branching out into a solo career saw Matthews win multiple ARIA awards and record such hits as Token Angels, Let’s Kiss (Like An-gels Do) and the melancholic The Day You Went Away. While her latest album Billie and Me delves

into the work of Billie Holliday, Matthews said her Newcastle set would be chock-full of her classic hits.

So, just what is it about Australian music of the 1970s to the 1990s that still sells tickets to shows like this in 2016?

“It was a really prolific time in Australian music – maybe one we might not see again. There was a real regard for the singer/ songwriter and people were actually making albums,” she laughed.

“For me, sounds and smells can instantly transport you to a specific time and place which is why, I think, that music from that period still resonates so strongly.”

After a mammoth inaugural hit-out that saw the likes of James Reyne, the Screaming Jets and Moving Pictures rocking the Newcastle Foreshore, the Live at the Foreshore festival is back for 2016 and, this time around it’s even bigger.

It’s certainly been an amazing ride for Aussie singer/songwriter Alex Lloyd.

To celebrate a career that has seen him net four ARIA awards, Lloyd, in collaboration with Liberation Music, has released Acoustica – 12 stunning, intimate recordings that the man himself will visit when he takes to the Lizotte’s Lambton stage, this weekend.

Acoustica sees Lloyd breathe new life into his much-loved classics including Amazing, Coming Home, Beautiful, and Black The Sun. “It was certainly something I’d thought of doing before,” he said.

“This project came along at the perfect time for me…and doing these recordings really helped create a spark in me.

It’s been great to re-address these songs and I’m really happy with how it’s turned out.

Making Hay while the sun shines Hot on the heels of the release of his latest longplayer Roller Coaster, Aussie blues rocker and favourite in this part of the world, Claude Hay, will be back, later this month, for a special show at the Stag and Hunter.

It’s never been in doubt that Claude Hay knows his way around a hook, and his fourth studio album highlights Hay’s writing just as much as his unique guitar and vocal approach.

From the stripped-back glam rock of the title track, gutter funk of Forget About Me and Bowie-meets-chain-gang eclecticism of a tune like Hold You Up - this album is a tour-de-force from an artist at the peak of his craft, and one who’s not afraid to let his inner hillbilly shine from time to time.

“I’m never really happy with anything I create and end up doing 15 versions of things until someone convinces me it’s good enough - so Roller Coaster took a while to write and demo,” Hay said.

“It’s also the first album I’ve written to be performed by a band - my previous albums were

Giving the house a once-over will work wonders as we welcome longer days and warmer weather. It’s also a good way to prepare for hosting guests during the silly season, which is fast approaching.

Ditch the layers Do away with throws, heavy-duty blankets and rugs used during the cooler months. Make sure you wash them well and ensure that they dry in full sun so they’re clean and crisp, ready for use next year.

Bring out the spring Liven up your living spaces with accessories to match the seasonal change. This will breathe new life into your home, and, let’s face it; it’s one of the more enjoyable spring cleaning jobs, so have fun with it.

Here comes the less fun part of spring cleaning – the actual cleaning. Wash walls, windows and floors, bleach basins and bathrooms, dust and vacuum, and tidy to your heart’s content. There’s nothing better than a clean home.

Last weekend, I fielded many questions about yellowing leaves on gardenias. Sure they may lack iron, but the problem is created by the windy weather and the dry conditions. A common myth is that the garden doesn’t need water during winter. The coming hot weather is a reminder to check watering systems and tap attachments and timers, which may need new batteries. Also, familiarise yourself with a plant’s moisture needs. For example, natives require less water than surface-rooting azaleas. Shade loving plants, including camellias and rhododendron, will benefit from a layer of peat moss applied over the root surface.

Consider mulching the garden with sugar cane, which will gradually break down adding nitrogen to the

soil. Dig in old mulch, then fertilise before reapplying two or three times a year.

Lawns should be watered deeply every three days rather than daily, as the latter stimulates poor root growth and makes the grass too reliant on a daily drink. Lastly, when buying potting mix, price tells the story. Two for $5, I don’t think so. These cheaper products won’t contain the necessary water retention products or the amount of fertiliser to sustain growth.
