This week, myself and Newcastle Weekly general manager Lavinia Hutchison were lucky enough to have a cup of tea with Matt Nichols from Soul Café in Newcastle. If you’re not aware, Soul Café provides around 600 free meals, per week, to the most disadvantaged people in our community - many of whom are homeless, dealing with a mental illness or substance abuse, or living in poverty. It would be disingenuous to think of Soul Café as merely a “soup kitchen”, as it takes a truly holistic approach to “getting people back on their feet” offering such services as free medical consultations, and legal aid and accommodation assistance. All too often, our community’s disadvantaged are put to the back of our minds as we deal with the minutiae of our own lives, however when you consider that none of us are immune to hardship, the issue cannot be swept under the carpet. How inspiring it was to talk to Matt and see the palpable passion for the work Soul Café does written all over his face and the faces of the throng of enthusiastic volunteers. Visit soulcafe. org to find out more. Have a great week.

Newcastle Registry Week volunteers at Nobbys Beach.

Data sheds new light n army of volunteers has uncovered raw, real-time data about Newcastle’s homeless population, which could hold the key to ending homelessness in the region. Thirteen teams of three, comprised of representatives from local homelessness and welfare agencies, swept the city’s streets in the early hours of 18 to 20 October to conduct Newcastle’s first Registry Week survey. Originating in New York in

1990, the now global movement, which has made its way to Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Canberra, canvasses the homeless population in any given city, to better understand people’s circumstances and link them in with support services. Over the course of three days, volunteers counted 54 homeless people in the Newcastle local government area – predominantly within the Newcastle city 2300

postcode – 41 of whom agreed to be surveyed. Volunteers used a 101-question survey to ascertain how individual circumstances had led to homelessness; current living situations (sleeping on the streets, taking refuge at hostels or couch surfing); and, ultimately, the level of support each person needed. Of those surveyed, 15% needed housing only, 56% needed housing and short-term support, and 29% required housing and permanent support. Twenty-eight men and 13 women were surveyed, with the median age being 45.5 years old, and the average time spent homeless 2.7 years. A whopping 54% of respondents said they had experienced a traumatic event, which had contributed to their homelessness. But perhaps the most astounding finding was the cost to the public health system. Over the past six months from April to October, homelessness has cost taxpayers

$194,874 in hospitalisations, accident and emergency visits and ambulance trips. By comparison, Sydney taxpayers forked out $209,616 over the same period. However, Sydney’s homeless population, based on its 2015 Registry Week survey, is closer to 500. Overall, chief executive of the Mercy Foundation (which coordinates Sydney’s survey), Felicity Reynolds, said homelessness in Newcastle was “completely solvable”. “It’s not thousands [of people],” she said. “Some services might feel there’s thousands because they present and re-present, but you’ve got 54 people whose homelessness can be solved with the right support.” A permanent registry of the city’s homeless has been created, which St Vincent de Paul Society has sole access to, but will share the data with other local services providers to tackle the problem collaboratively. - Georgia Osland

news Aboriginal land council placed into administration The NSW government has placed the Awabakal Local Aboriginal Land Council into administration. Board members were sacked and an administrator appointed amid claims the Council had committed “substantial breaches” of the Land Rights Act. It has been almost a year since the government announced an investigation into the Council’s affairs. The Council’s receivership status casts further doubt over the future of the old Newcastle Post Office in Hunter Street, one of the Council’s land assets, as well as its long-standing claim over the King Edward Park Headland.

Swanson ejected over Williamtown Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson is certainly taking the fight over the Williamtown contamination issue to Canberra after being ejected from the House of Representatives, during Question Time, last week. The incident occurred after Labour Shadow Defence Minister Richard Marles asked Defence Industry Minister Christopher Pyne “who is actually the senior minister in the Defence portfolio,” alluding the fact that three Turnbull government ministers hold Defence portfolios with the Defence website stating their portfolios’ responsibilities were “to be advised”. Ms Swanson called out to Mr Pyne: “who is responsible for Williamtown? Tell the truth,” and was ejected from the chamber for one hour. “If I had to be thrown out over something I am glad it is Williamtown,” Ms Swanson said.

Wallsend mum-of-two Heather, with her sons Jai and Khem.

Raising two children is costly enough, without the added expense of school materials. That’s why single mother Heather, of Wallsend, joined The Smith Family’s Saver Plus program. Heather home-schools her two sons Khem, 13, and Jai, nine. She said, in some ways, it was less expensive than sending her children to a mainstream school, but she still had to fork out for textbooks and other resources. “It’s hard to come up with that [money] when you need it,” she said. Heather, a part-time hospitality worker, heard from a co-worker about Saver Plus – a financial literacy program that helps low-income earners save regularly, and rewards them for doing so.

Coordinated in Newcastle by The Smith Family and funded by ANZ Bank and the federal government, the program encourages participants to save $500 over 10 months, which is then matched, dollar for dollar, giving participants the chance to pocket up to $1000 in total. Participants attend MoneyMinded workshops, which equip them with the skills and confidence to set and achieve a savings goal. When Heather signed up a few weeks ago, she became the 1000th participant to join the program in Newcastle. Delivered by community organisations at 60 locations around Australia, including Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens, Maitland and Cessnock, the program was

launched in Newcastle in 2006. Since then, participants have collectively saved $500,000 and received $500,000 in matched savings. An impressive 87% of Newcastle participants successfully complete the program. To join the program, applicants must hold a Centrelink Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card; be at least 18 years old; earn some

regular income; have a child at school or attend vocational education themselves; and live, work, study or have a child in an area where Saver Plus is delivered. news The top three skills that offer the highest job mobility in the Greater Newcastle area – a town built on its history as a coal mining hotspot – might surprise you. Regional Australia Institute’s Regional Connections – skills, people & places report identifies those skills as social media marketing, digital and online design and publishing, and digital and online marketing. 29.8% of people trained in social media marketing and currently working in the industry had changed jobs within the last 12 months, while for digital and online design and publishing, as well as digital and online marketing, that figure was 24%. These figures, compiled using data from online networking site LinkedIn, suggest these skills are transferrable, allowing skilled workers to move from job to job within the industry. It gives insight into which areas of Newcastle’s economy might experience the biggest growth in years to come. The newly-released data is befitting, given that the Baird government announced plans,

earlier this month, to build an “innovation hub” in Newcastle’s CBD – a dedicated space to foster collaboration between researchers, students, developers, investors, start-ups and small to medium-sized enterprises. However, for the time being, Newcastle remains somewhat connected to its roots, with the report naming the top five skills in the region – ranked by the percentage of Newcastle’s 364,087-strong working population that possess them – as: IT infrastructure and system management (5.7%); healthcare management (3.8%); process and project management (2.6%); education and teaching (2%); and lean manufacturing and quality management (1.9%). The report highlights the Greater Newcastle area as a “previously industrial [city], shifting to a service economy”, with the largest employers being the health, retail and manufacturing sectors. Interestingly, the region’s top three skill shortages are tax, financial planning, and Microsoft web services and application development. - Georgia Osland

Ambassador brings gift of mental illness

Women on Wednesday Lakelands representatives present Carolyn Bear (far left) with the quilt.

Spinning a yarn for charity The rich fabric that is the Lake Macquarie community has been personified in a patchwork quilt that symbolises new hope for ovarian cancer sufferers. Women on Wednesday Lakelands, a craft group that meets weekly at Lakelands Community Centre to support local charities, presented Valentine’s Carolyn Bear with a quilt, last week, which its members spent a collective 500 hours on. The quilt will be raffled off from next month, starting with a fundraising night at Valentine Bowling Club on 11 November at 5.30pm, to raise money for ovarian cancer research. It will be drawn in May on World Ovarian Cancer Day. The subject hits close to home for Carolyn, who lost her 34-year-old daughter Kylie to ovarian cancer. Over the years Carolyn has made it her personal mission to raise money for the cause, raising almost $100,000 through the sale of her jewellery, a charity project she named ‘Aspire for Kylie’. Carolyn was a finalist in Lifeline Newcastle & Hunter’s 2016 Steel Magnolia Awards. - Georgia Osland

Nick Bowditch is an entrepreneur, a social media thought-leader, an advisor and investor in startups, and a sought-after speaker. He also experiences mental illness. CEO Gillian Summers has announced Nick is Lifeline Hunter Central Coast’s new ambassador. She said his experience made him a great role model. “Nick has lived with depression and addiction for a long time but has started and grown businesses, carved out a speaking career, and become a sought-after mentor to big and small organisations,” Gillian said. Nick said aspects of his behaviour that some potentially see as negative traits make him a better entrepreneur. “I have the choice of having my mental illness define who I am, or not,” Nick said. “I prefer to look at the things that make me different as gifts rather than curses,” he said. One of Nick’s first duties was as keynote speaker at Lifeline’s Central Coast Brass Blokes Awards. At the event, he donated proceeds from his new book, Reboot Your Thinking, to support Lifeline’s local, life saving, suicide prevention services.

Mind the mozzies The recent spring rains have prompted Hunter New England Health (HNEH) to urge people throughout the region to take precautions against mosquitoes. HNEH physician David Durrheim said the recent warm weather, together with good rainfall, has resulted in ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes responsible for spreading Ross River virus and Barmah Forest virus. Dr Durrheim said, to minimise the mozzie threat, people should: avoid being outside, unprotected, before dawn and after dusk; avoid high-risk breeding sites; wear loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing that covers your arms and legs; use an insect repellent that contains the chemical DEET or picardin on exposed skin; fit and

There will be plenty of aircraft to marvel at at the Rathmines Catalina Festival.

Birds of steel fly high All eyes will be on the sky this weekend when the 10th annual Catalina Festival soars over Rathmines. A spectacular air show will feature breathtaking stunts and flying manoeuvers of 15 specialty aircraft, including Tiger Moths, an Avenger, P-51 Mustang and L-35 Albatross. Pilot Paul Bennet leads the acrobatics show, culminating in the HARS Catalina Flying Display by ‘Felix the Black Cat’ from the Historical Restoration Society at Albion Park. Visitors can even take to the sky themselves, with a helicopter joy flight offering a bird’s-eye view of stunning Lake Macquarie. Jaw-dropping air displays are, arguably, the biggest drawcard of the festival, which celebrates the Catalina and the rich history of the Rathmines WWII RAAF Base. By 1941, the RAAF flying boat base was the largest in the southern hemisphere.

It was home to almost 3,000 personnel from 1944 to 1945, 332 of whom lost their lives. Set on the western shore of Lake Macquarie at Rathmines Park, the festival is one of Lake Macquarie’s biggest, offering a wide range of landbased activities including military vehicle displays, a classic car show ‘n’ shine, market stalls, community service displays and kids’ activities. There will also be an array of food stalls dishing out a bite to eat. The festival is an initiative of the Rathmines Catalina Memorial Park Association, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to preserving the history of Rathmines RAAF Base and Catalina aircraft. It’s on this Sunday 30 October at Rathmines Park, Stilling Street, Rathmines. Entry is $5 per person or $15 per family. - Georgia Osland

Charity project raises thousands The Build for a Cure charity housing project in Teralba was auctioned off for a whopping $662,000 at the weekend. A fundraising initiative of the Children’s Cancer Institute, the four-bedroom family home was built from the ground up in 21 days over August and September, all in the name of charity. All of the sale proceeds will go towards research into tailored therapies for high-risk child cancer patients across Australia, including those treated at John Hunter Children’s Hospital. It is enough to fund more than six senior scientists for a year and the materials they need to do the research to inch one step closer to a childhood cancer cure.

Awaba Public School won the primary school category of the 2016 Lake Macquarie School Environment Awards.

Top enviro honour for school Awaba Public School’s nifty use of vegetable gardens, colour-coded bins and solar panels helped it win the top gong in the 2016 Lake Macquarie School Environment Awards. The school was named the overall winner in the primary school category, alongside St Mary’s High School in Gateshead, which won the high school category. Awaba Public has implemented an environmental management plan, designed to help its students be environmentally aware when it comes to waste management, energy consumption and land management. The school’s 10-kilowatt solar panel system generates enough power to fuel its daytime energy use. St Mary’s High also uses 52 solar panels, as well as water-saving devices and a recycling system. Other winners included St John Vianney Primary School, Morisset (energy); Hillsborough Public School (natural environment); Blacksmiths and Teralba public schools (waste); Charlton Christian College (water); and Biddabah Public School (innovation). - Georgia Osland

sport Jets continue solid season start The Newcastle Jets have continued their unbeaten start to the 2016/17 Hyundai A-League season after notching up a 2-all draw against Western Sydney Wanderers at Spotless Stadium in Sydney on Saturday. After a shaky first half that saw the visitors walk off the pitch 2-0 down, the Jets turned on a remarkable comeback in the second stanza to snatch one point from the match-up. The goals for Newcastle came courtesy of central defender Nigel Boogaard, who claimed the 20,000th goal in Australian National League history, and winger Andrew Hoole, who netted a free kick in the 88th minute to secure his second A-League goal. After the opening three rounds, Newcastle move to five points and are sitting fourth on the table. Big turnout for Fernleigh 15 More than 400 hopefuls descended on the Fernleigh Track on Saturday to contest the fifth annual Fernleigh 15. Newcastle runners Vlad Shatrov and Bridey Delaney took out the men’s and women’s sections of the main, 15-kilometre race, while Paralympic champion Kurt Fearnley took home top honours in the 15-kilometre wheelchair race and notched up his third Fernleigh victory after a thrilling battle with fellow Paralympic great Christie Dawes, who Fearnley edged out by a mere second. Shatrov ran an impressive 49.10 to become the first runner to win the event back-to-back. The Lake Macquarie Beach Patrol team won the open 5x3km relay.

CARDIFF GETS SPOOKY

FOR HALLOWEEN

Something decidedly spooky is happening in Cardiff. With Halloween just around the corner, the Lake Macquarie suburb will be awash with pumpkins, witches, ghouls and all manner of creatures when the 2016 Halloween @ Cardiff event kicks off this weekend. Due to increased interest in all things Halloween, this year’s event will see Main Road closed to traffic for the duration of the fun-filled family friendly event. Cardiff businesses are inviting revellers to come dressed in their best costumes for the day, while the kids can go from business to business (where advertised) to fill their pumpkin pails with sweets. When the businesses have run out of treats they will take down the sign. Apart from all of the

trick or treat fun, there’s still plenty to do at this year’s Halloween @ Cardiff. Variety The Children’s Charity will be bringing some Bash cars featuring Olaph and Elsa from Frozen, Where’s Wally and Minions and you can also get up close and personal with some cute and cuddly animals at the Oakvale Farm petting zoo. In keeping with the Halloween theme, resident pumpkin slayer Sam the Slasher will be offering pumpkin carving displays while Cardiff Library

will be taking spooky selfies. If that wasn’t enough, Cardiff Fire Brigade will have you thinking about safety with a live kitchen fire simulation and the SES will also be there on the day. Speaking of stalls, there’ll be more than you can poke a spooky stick at – such as St Thomas Anglican Church craft stall in Harrison Street, Cardiff Sustainable Neighbourhood Group, Kriss’ Candles, Mary Kay consultants, Goddess Candles, the Sons of ANZAC Harley Davidson Charity Riders, Cardiff and South Cardiff Soccer Clubs, who will be offering registrations on the day, a specialty glow stick stall, Macquarie Hills Community Preschool, plaster molders, henna tattoos, cake stalls and if it’s snacks you’re after, there’ll be plenty of fairy floss, flavoured nuts, popcorn, snow cones and slushies for all as well as a wide array of treats

such as Cardiff Rotary’s BBQ outside Reids Quality Meats (who also have a very ghoulish surprise in store for the kids) and the Cardiff Scouts BBQ in Harrison Street. There will also be plenty of entertainment on offer such as dancers from the Australian Dance and Talent Centre in Cardiff, The Mosh Pit DJ and the kids will fly high on two giant jumping castles. So, if it’s a family friendly day out that is light on scares but big on great times, then Halloween @ Cardiff is just the ticket. Halloween @ Cardiff is presented by Northlakes Chamber of Commerce, Cardiff Business and Industry and will be on Saturday 29 October from 9am to 3pm. The Northlakes Chamber of Commerce and Cardiff Business and Industry would like to thank all Cardiff businesses who will be participating in the trick or treat fun.

There’s no denying that Halloween is becoming bigger and bigger each year. Even those who refuse to jump on board the Halloween train can’t deny the fact that the superstitious holiday, observed every year on 31 October, is growing in popularity around the world, and, in particular, Australia. Halloween has Celtic origins dating back 2,000 years. The Celts, who lived in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom and northern France, rang in the new year on 1 November (All Saints’ Day), which marked the end of summer and the beginning of a long, cold winter – a time often associated, in those days, with illness and death. Being superstitious folk guided by ancient rituals, the Celts believed that on the night before the turn of the new year – 31 October – the ghosts of the dead returned to earth to wreak havoc. This day was called All Hallows’ Eve, which later became known as Halloween. Some Celtic priests held bonfires and wore costumes to ward off the ghosts, and people

left bowls of food out in their homes or on their doorsteps as a peace offering to the spirits to prevent them from entering. These ancient traditions evolved over time into family-friendly activities, such as costume parties (with iconic symbols being pumpkins, black cats, bats, spiders, witches, ghosts, skeletons and the like), and trick-or-treating door to door for candy. The movement first landed in America in the 1800s, and by the 1920s and 30s, it had become a secular, communitycentred holiday. It was in America that the centuries-old practice of trick-or-treating was revived as a way for the whole community to get in the Halloween spirit. The theory goes that people could prevent tricks being played on them by offering small treats to children. Though you could argue, nowadays, that Halloween is more of a novelty than anything else, each year it seems to grow bigger in Australia, with more and more activities and events being held across the country. It looks like Halloween is here to stay.

Road closures for Halloween @ Cardiff Given that this year’s Halloween @ Cardiff is shaping up to be the biggest and best yet, the event has been upgraded to a fully closed street market day. On Saturday 29 October, from 7am to 4pm, the footprint of the event will cover the closure of Main Road – from Kelton Street to Harrison Street. The need to enlarge the foot print of this event has come about due to the popularity of the day and safety concerns for the number of families that attend this event in ever growing numbers. Five spooky Halloween facts 1

“Souling” is a medieval Christian precursor to modern-day trick-ortreating. On Hallowmas (November 1), the poor would go door-todoor offering prayers for the dead in exchange for soul cakes.

2 3

Halloween has variously been called All Hallows’ Eve, Witches Night, Lamswool, Snap-Apple Night, Samhaim, and Summer’s End. Halloween was also influenced by the ancient Roman festival Pomona, which celebrated the harvest goddess of the same name. Many Halloween customs and games that feature apples (such as bobbing for apples) and nuts date from this time. Scottish girls believed they could see images of their future husband if they hung wet sheets in front of the fire on Halloween. The first Jack O’ Lanterns were actually made from turnips.

Cardiff – where you’re one of the family With the inevitable hustle and bustle of Christmas just around the corner, the shopping precinct of Cardiff represents a great alternative to the major shopping centers. Prominent Cardiff businessman Max McCorkell, who owns 4 Your Home in Harrison Street said that there was a big focus on families in the area. “Cardiff really is very family oriented with a lot of familyowned businesses in the area,” he said. “Also, we treat everybody who shops here as a member of the family. “For me shopping somewhere like Cardiff helps to support local businesses and put food on the tables of local families.” From Cardiff Jewellers, Danse Boutique, Ronnies Flower Shop, 4 Your Home, Impact Tattoos (to name but a few) to the Cardiff Shopping Centre (featuring Woolworths , Sadids Indian and Kebab Restaurant, HK Nails, Hair Matisse, Cardiff Central Newsagency and more) and ALDI, there is truly something for everyone in Cardiff. “We’re also a very close-knit community,” Max added. “We’ve been through floods, we’ve been through the digging up of Main Road and we’re still here – Cardiff is a very resilient community.” Not only is Cardiff resilient, but growing with new businesses opening in the area. “We just had Divalinas Clearance Outlet open last week and it’s great to see new, successful, businesses popping up in the area.” Visit Cardiff today to experience all it has to offer.

LATIN MEGASTAR TO MAKE NEWCASTLE SWOON When it comes to artists who are synonymous with the love song, there are few who spring to mind as readily as Julio Iglesias.

Making songs such as Moonlight Lady, Vincent (Starry Starry Night), When I Need You, To All the Girls I’ve Loved Before and Smoke Gets In Your Eyes with his own with his honeyed vocals and Latin charisma, Iglesias has sung in various languages throughout his career but he said that language was no barrier to conveying a message. “It is of course easier for me to

sing in my native Spanish, or in English for example, but when I sing in Mandarin or Japanese, it’s about knowing where the feeling of a phrase is. “Every phrase in a song has feeling and meaning and if you can find where that is, in any language, it is a success.” It comes as a bit of a surprise that Iglesias is somewhat of an accidental singer as a burgeoning career playing football for Real Madrid was cut short after a car accident. “I was going to be a goalkeeper and then I had my accident – I picked up a guitar while recovering and that’s where I found my passion,” he said. “I also went to England to study English and this was around the time of the Beatles and watching them just amazed me as did people like Tom Jones and Elvis Presley and the crooners like Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole – it’s safe to say I was hooked.” At 73, Iglesias’ passion, not just for his music, but for life in general, is palpable. “Passion is what keeps life interesting,” he said. “You have to have passion in your mind and in your heart – not just as a singer but for everyone.” Catch Julio Iglesias at Newcastle Entertainment Centre on Tuesday 6 December. Over the course of his long career, the Latin megastar has sold more than 250 million albums globally and has more than 400 gold and platinum certified records to his name – making him one of the best-selling artists of all time. He has performed for kings, queens and heads of state, and worked with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, Placido Domingo and Charles Aznavour and now, Iglesias will be returning to Australia for a whistle-stop four-date east coast tour and Newcastle is lucky enough to be on the itinery. Iglesias told Newcastle Weekly that the proposition of an Australian tour was always an exciting one. “What happens when I find out that I’m coming back to Australia is that my kids and my wife get very excited because they love it as much as I do,” he said. “It’s always an honour to come back to your wonderful country and I’d like to thank everyone down there for inviting me.”

1. Halloween (1978) |Director: John Carpenter No Halloween flick list would be complete without this slasher gem from horror master John Carpenter. Escaped mental patient Michael Myers wreaks havoc on small town Haddonfield, Illinois on the spookiest night of the year. A foreboding score, meticulous lighting and a tense, taught script make this one of the greatest horror flicks of all time. 2. The Babadook (2014) Director: Jennifer Kent (pictured) This little Australian sleeper surprised horror fans worldwide and it’s not hard to see why. This unsettling flick tells the story of a single mother, her ‘unruly’ child and the illustrated book The Babadook that mysteriously arrives at the house. Original and creepy. 3. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) Director: Wes Craven Arguably the Citizen Kane of the supernatural slasher genre, Wes Craven’s magnum opus still stands, head and shoulders, above the majority of modern horror flicks.

While most of the sequels were silly parodies, Freddy Krueger still has the ability to make us jump. 4. The Shining (1980) Director: Stanley Kubrick The horror novels of Stephen King have long been fodder for the silver screen and this example from auteur Stanley Kubrick is a tense, uncomfortable and slow-burning meditation on psychosis that, in my opinion eclipses King’s words. Jack Nicholson gives one of the best performances of his career as the unhinged caretaker of the Overlook Hotel. Here’s Johnny! 5. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) Director: Tobe Hooper While the many sequels, spin-offs and reboots this flick generated focus more on ‘in-your-face gore’ than building tension, this masterpiece from director Tobe Hooper is a masterclass in suspense. With very little on-screen violence actually shown, much of the terror this film generates is left to the viewers own imagination. Eek! -Stephen Bisset

Newcastle-based sculptor Julie Squires has unveiled her latest work which pays homage to the former Turton and Sons Pottery Brick Works, on Turton Road, Waratah. The sculpture, a life-size bronze statue representing a brick worker from the 1860s, takes pride of place in Waratah Village, the site where the brick works once stood. “The owners of Waratah Village wanted to acknowledge the historical significance of the site and I was honoured to be part of the project,” Ms Squires said. She added that the end result was a composite of men depicted in photographs from the era and she also used a live model to bring out even more personality in her subject. “I worked with a guy by the

A WEEKEND OF GREAT FLAVOURS There’s no denying that Port Stephens has more than its fair share of great food and great views so, what better way to show them off than the Tastes at the Bay Festival. This feast of the senses will take over the Nelson Bay CBD as well as D’Albora Marina with a plethora of cooking demonstrations, the best live bands the region has to offer, amazing food, wine tastings, markets and a fun, family friendly festival atmosphere. Destination Port Stephens marketing manager Danny Eather said the festival was a great way to show off the many jewells in the region’s crown. “It’s all about showcasing the amazing local flavours and local produce that we have here in Port Stephens,” he said. Tastes at the Bay gives you the chance to taste fresh produce, straight from the farm, try your hand at oyster shucking and sample award-winning craft beers and wines from throughout the region, learn wine and food matching from experienced sommeliers and check out demonstrations from the likes of Paul Miranda from TAFE who will show you how to make sugar flowers, airbrush colour application, modern chocolate and ganache buttercream “drippy cake” and croquembouche demonstration. One the music side of things, the likes of Half Nelson, Contraband, The

Novatones, The Howard Ward Band, The Rehab Brass Band, Fruit Trees, Claudio and the New Orleans Quartet will entertain while you while away the hours with some great food. A new addition to the festival is the “Progressive Jazz Luncheon Cruise” on the Spirit of Port Stephens with New Orleans Jazz Quartet. Enjoy your entree on board before cruising to two other venues and take in the stunning waterways of Port Stephens all for $89 per person. Call 4984 4751 to book or visit portstephens.org.au/tastes. Tastes at the Bay is a free festival and will be on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 November.

Eye shadow, nail polish, lipstick – even temporary hair dye: black, deep purple and dark grey are your go-to colours for Halloween. Used sparingly, dark features can bring out your costume, especially if you’re dressed as something sinister, such as a vampire or ghoul.

Some costumes call for it, but not all Halloween hair has to be dark and ominous. If you prefer a bit of colour, hair chalk and coloured hairspray are the perfect (temporary!) options.

Anything that you can stick on and remove later, be it glow-in-the-dark nail stickers or temporary tattoos, is a must for Halloween. These cool additions will add an extra dimension to your costume that will leave you the envy of the party. Getty Images

The recent storms are a reminder that trees, for suburban planting, need to be chosen with care. A good rule of thumb is that if a tree grows 10 metres high, it should be planted 10 metres from the house. Shrubs are generally lower than 3 metres, shooting from the bottom without developing a trunk. Eucalypts (gums) have proven to be an unwise choice in smaller gardens, crashing through roofs and crushing cars when a severe storm passes through. It would be wise to only plant the smaller growing, grafted flowering eucalypts or other smaller growing natives, for example wattles which grow quickly or NSW Christmas Bush (Ceratopetalum gummiferum). One of the more popular small trees is Magnolia ‘Little Gem’ and the newer release ‘Teddy Bear’, both have large glossy green leaves bearing large white blooms over a long period. When planting out trees, find out the mature height, judge where its shadow will fall and will its height interfere with overhead power lines causing Ausgrid to do one of those awful pruning jobs.

S Fold Sheer Curtains

NCR Blinds carry on family tradition in Bennett’s Green Following on from the continued success of Lorraine’s Curtains in Belmont, NCR Blinds Curtains and Shutters has expanded its operations to its new-look showroom at Bennett’s Green – located in the recently developed industrial park. Lorraine and Bob Douglas successfully ran the well-known Lorraine’s Curtain’s, located on the Pacific Highway, opposite Belmont Fire Station, for 25 years. Now, Joel and Michelle Gray are proudly continuing the family-owned business, within the residential and commercial sectors, for window coverings – both inside and out. Joel and Michelle are carrying on the growing success of the well-known business and the staff at NCR Blinds Curtains and Shutters and Lorraine’s Curtains are dedicated to providing great customer service, the right product information and competitive pricing. Both Joel and Michelle have worked in the business for many years and now feel that their passion for and knowledge of curtains, blinds and shutters makes them, arguably, the number one experts in the window covering sector throughout the region. It’s the finer details and the experience passed down from Lorraine and Bob that allow Joel and Michelle and the staff at NCR Blinds Curtains and 36

Shutters to tackle those jobs that might be more challenging for others. It’s not an industry that just anyone can enter, particularly the curtain side. This takes years of experience to confidently know the right fabric as well as how it should be made and hung. Giving the client the right design and colour advice is critical in this industry. NCR Blinds Curtains and Shutters are also expanding on its motorised range – incorporating motorised products into home automation - as these products are becoming more and more popular. One recently completed project involved all window coverings, internal and external, utilising Environexus, Push Home Automation and Somfy Motors. Joel, with his electrical background, has a big interest in the more technical, motorised projects. Together with the continued support of Lorraine and Bob and the expert installation team, Joel and Michelle's passion for design and technical advice in the window coverings world is sure to help you.

Students take out top honours Commercial Apprentice of the Year Cameron Anacki (left) and Housing Apprentice of the Year Jake Brunette (right).

Hunter TAFE students led the pack at the prestigious Master Builders Newcastle 2016 Excellence Awards, with two graduates taking out Apprentice of the Year awards. Jake Brunette, 22, completed his Certificate II in Plumbing and was named Housing Apprentice of the Year. Certificate III in Plumbing graduate Cameron Anacki, 23, won Commercial Apprentice of the Year. Both apprentices studied at the Maitland TAFE campus at Metford. Master Builders judges were impressed by the confident manner in which Mr Brunette and Mr Anacki presented themselves at the interview during the award application process, with positive attitude, skills and aptitude for plumbing. Mr Brunette said he was humbled to receive an award. “There were more than 200 nominations so I didn’t set my hopes too high,” he said.

“The award came as a big surprise. My boss Gary Brooks and his wife were there and they were very excited.” Mr Brunette works with Master Builders host employer Brooks Metal Roofing, and hopes to continue with the Medowie-based business. He also plans to return to TAFE to complete his Certificate III and Masters in Plumbing. Mr Anacki works at Mullane Plumbing, another Master Builders host employer, and is now halfway into a Certificate IV in Plumbing and Services (Operations Stream) to further his education. “Hopefully I can stay with Mullane,” he said. “I don’t plan on moving, but my Certificate IV should just about enable me to run my own business, or go on to a diploma. It’s all knowledge, so it’s not wasted.”

PICK OF THE WEEK Catch Me If You Can Friday, NBN, 8.30pm, M (2002) The incredible true story of con man Frank Abagnale Jr (Leonardo DiCaprio) proves the perfect subject for Steven Spielberg to helm his most light-hearted yet compelling film in years. In the early ’60s, 16-year-old Abagnale flees his home and creates myriad false identities (and cheques) to charm and procure millions from those he encounters. But he doesn’t reckon on the skills of FBI agent Carl Hanratty (Tom Hanks), who is forever on his trail.

Friday

Die Hard

Gremlins Saturday, GO!, 7.45pm, PG (1984) The cute little furry mutant creatures named Mogwai that go berserk after midnight are firmly ingrained into the memory of most who lived through ’80s pop culture. With hindsight, Joe Dante’s goofy teen horror-comedy hasn’t quite stood the test of time (unlike Ghostbusters) and is a lot darker than its reputation suggests. Zach Galligan is serviceable as the teenage critter owner who breaks the golden rules, causing his small town to be trashed by the malicious gremlins in a series of set-pieces that are clever but unspectacular.

Monday, ONE, 8.30pm, M (1988) As the hardened, wise-cracking cop on holiday who battles high-stakes terrorists who have seized control of a multinational skyscraper where his wife is among the hostages, Bruce Willis redefined the action blockbuster. Imitations followed, but none have lived up to the firecracker suspense and special effects helmed by influential director John McTiernan (Predator). And in the history of bad guys, few have sneered as slyly as Alan Rickman. Relive the excitement – action doesn’t get much better.

Whatever else is going on behind the scenes, Toni knows the time is right to smooth over old family tensions. She wants bliss, beauty and harmony around her, which is a tall order, but she can start to put certain plans in place. On the career front her ambitions will be soaring, so she may as well keep up the momentum and push ahead with everything that is important to her.

1 November 1972

ARIES: MAR 21 - APR 20

CANCER: JUNE 22 - JUL 22

LIBRA: SEPT 24 - OCT 23

CAPRICORN: DEC 22 - JAN 20

You need to focus on moving forward in your relationships and your career. All of a sudden you yearn for security and protection, so you will start to avoid tricky people and awkward situations. Find a space to dig deep inside to ask yourself what you want.

A change of scene will bring some surprise encounters and experiences. An unusual task will take you out of your comfort zone at work, but will be an opportunity to explore new talents. An influx of funds, good news or advantageous deals will give your finances a lift.

Connections you form during the next 12 months are likely to become important in your career and personal life. A long awaited gettogether will be a sentimental affair. Singles, a fun flirtation will hold romantic promise and a surprise from someone special will stop you in your tracks.

The stars are giving you the green light to proceed with everything that is important to you. A stroke of good fortune could bring a monetary offer, unexpected boost or exciting action with a career or financial enterprise. An unusual incident at home could keep you on your toes.

An unusual solution to a problem could come from out of the blue. Stay open to all possibilities to make the most of this. Mercury is in your 3rd house and invitations for fun are likely to be pouring in and you will be spoiled for choice.

SCORPIO: OCT 24 - NOV 22

VIRGO: AUG 24 - SEPT 23

SAGITTARIUS: NOV 23 - DEC 21

It appears somebody has not been particularly honest with you and you dislike that. However, be careful not to jump to conclusions without all knowing all the facts. When it comes to tricky personal matters, your heart and intuition will guide you in the right direction.

You're looking wonderful and will attract favourable comments wherever you go. If you are single you will have many chances of meeting interesting new people. Some encounters will lead to romance, whilst others will result in long-term friendship. The emphasis is on foreign countries and higher education.

LEO: JUL 23 - AUG 23

GEMINI: MAY 22 - JUNE 21

While Mars in Capricorn increases your desire for fun, avoid burning the candle at both ends. Parents, you might find that children are completely exhausting. If this should be the case, enlist the help of your partner or friends. There’s no need to carry the load alone.

Avoid pinning too much on one association or you could be left in the lurch. Remember, actions speak louder than words! The spotlight is on people you’re financially dependent on, such as a partner or boss. Leave your cares to one side, listen to them and offer your support.

The New Moon on 31 October gives you the ability to assert yourself and to direct a great deal of energy towards achieving success. There will be a sense of dynamism in the air and you will want to make things happen. Friendships will have conflicts of interest or clashes to defuse. An unusual outing will be fun and enlightening; singles it may even offer intriguing romantic possibilities. A huge task or deadline will stretch your resources at work. Avoid taking it all on your own back, remember to delegate.

Free consultation and $200 off

AQUARIUS: JAN 21 - FEB 19

PISCES: FEB 20 - MAR 20 Contentious issues with a loved one could suddenly arise. Seeing both sides won't be easy, but it will help you find a positive way forward. Venus in Scorpio indicates a surprise gift will touch your heart and the chance to do something meaningful for another will make a thoughtful difference.
