From the editor Well, the Newcastle Weekly office was certainly not immune to Cup Fever on Tuesday, with all staff wrapped up in the excitement of sweeps, and a lovely spread of hors d'oeuvres, and chicken sandwiches. While I have never taken much interest in the Melbourne Cup (or horse racing and betting in general, for that matter), every year, I still meet the prospect of an office sweep with a certain level of excitement. It’s not about the money, and I rarely know anything about the horses that I draw. For me, it’s a chance to take five minutes out of our work schedule to socialise with colleagues and celebrate something that is inherently Australian. Oh, I won our office sweep, too, which is nice. With the pace of modern life increasing at a fantastic speed, we often get too wrapped up in our own worlds to stop and reflect on what’s important. That’s why, next Friday at 11am, I encourage all readers to observe one minutes’ silence to reflect on the sacrifice of Australian servicemen and women who have fought and died in all theatres of war for Remembrance Day. Australia would not be the country it is today if it were not for the sacrifice of these brave men and women. In the words of philosopher George Santayana “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” Have a great week.

Cracks in the surface Valentine Residents Association president Allan Bargwanna said it was concerning to the residents association, business owners and locals alike. “There’s an ever-present number of people having accidents – it’s not every day, but it is steady,” he said. The residents’ association has the support of its eastlake neighbour the Belmont & District Residents Action Group, which is equally concerned about the issue. About two weeks ago, residents raised their concerns at a site inspection attended by Lake Macquarie council officers. The council told Newcastle Weekly it had “identified general maintenance works to be completed by council and other utility providers”. “The works have been included in council’s maintenance schedule and are expected to be completed before the end of the year,” it said in the statement. However, Mr Bargwanna said it would take more than “general maintenance works” to fix the problem.

As far as he and other members of the residents association could tell, the last time any work was carried out to the walkway was about five years ago, with the asphalt section laid “many, many years ago”, most likely by a thirdparty contractor. “They’re just bandaid fixes,” he said. “The whole thing needs to be relevelled to do the job properly and make it safe for people.” - Georgia Osland

A number of accidents that have left some pedestrians needing to be “patched up” has prompted the Valentine community to call for a safer walkway in the suburb’s main street. The Valentine Residents Association has lodged a petition with Lake Macquarie council for a complete renewal of the footpath along Allambee Place, which fronts Allambee Park. Almost 300 signatures have been obtained from residents and business owners whose shopfronts adjoin the walkway, who believe it is a safety hazard. The pavement is uneven in several places where it has started to shift, particularly where a newer section of asphalt joins an older concrete section, near the Hairy Lime Café. There has also been work carried out there on the National Broadband Network. With the walkway uneven, residents estimate there have been at least eight serious incidents where passers-by have tripped and fell and injured themselves, including relatives of the nearby business owners.

news Newcastle recognises World Stroke Day Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes hosted a civic reception, on Monday, in recognition of World Stroke Day. Hunter Medical Research Institute Director, Professor Michael Nilsson, spoke about advancements in stroke treatment, particularly in Newcastle, which Professor Nilsson believes is “the best place to have a stroke”, due to the treatment and care available. Stoke survivor Kate Ryan also shared her heart-wrenching story of how she suffered a stroke at age 10, which paralysed the left side of her body. Newcastle City Hall’s clock tower turned green for three days from World Stroke Day, which was observed on 29 October, in recognition of the day.

Rail Trail feedback sought Input is currently being sought on the proposed Richmond Vale Rail Trail – a proposed 32-kilometres of walking and cycling track to run along the former Richmond Vale rail line. news Charity roundtable spitballs solutions It’s not often you see members of parliament from multiple electorates together in the same room, but it happened, last week, in the name of charity. Six Hunter MPs gathered in Wallsend to hear from representatives of 10 local charities, all of which are in need of government assistance. Grace McLean, chief executive officer of NFP Connect, a network that supports not-for-profit organisations, together with Member for Cessnock Clayton Barr, organised the roundtable. Mr Barr sat with fellow MPs Tim Crakanthorp (Newcastle), Jodie Harrison (Charlestown), Sonia Hornery (Wallsend), Yasmin Catley (Swansea) and Kate Washington (Port Stephens). Together they heard from the Victims of Crime Assistance League, Hunter Research Foundation, Newcastle Community Arts Centre, Paths 2 Change, Hunter Community Legal Centre, CanTeen, D.A.L.E Young Parents’ School, Interrelate, and EQ Calm. Each charity had 30 minutes to address

the room, raise concerns, and question how they might work with the state government to meet their needs. The MPs listened, answered questions and considered how, together, they could take action. NFP CEO Grace McLean said mediumto-large charity organisations in the Hunter often sprawled over more than one electorate, creating challenges to secure sufficient funding and solve widespread community issues, and confusion as to which MP to seek help from. “The work of the not-for-profits in our region is amazing,” she said. “For many of them this might be the very first time that they have spoken to a local MP. “Our conversation today with local MPs is about offering our services and support networks to their constituents. We know that a local MP is often a port of call for people that are having a hard time of it, and by explaining to the MPs what we do, they will be able to access our services for those in need.”

Lake Mac needs “gun” historians Do you have any historical information relating to the ‘cannon’ at Speers Point Park? If so, Lake Macquarie City Council wants to hear all about it. Council is currently preparing a grant application for conservation work on the cannon and would like to hear from anyone who has information about, or photographs of, when it was first placed in the park. “We know the cannon is a minenwerfer, or German trench mortar, that was used during World War One, and that after the war, council was given two of these mortars in 1922 to display in Speers Point Park,” council’s manager of integrated planning Sharon Pope said. Inside John Hunter Children’s Hospital’s newlyrefurbished Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Newborn care bolstered John Hunter Children’s Hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit has more than doubled in size, with stage one of a $25-million, threestage upgrade complete. The 42-bed NICU now includes 32 special care spaces, a palliative care room, showering facilities, a breastfeeding and expressing room, new waiting area, three counselling

rooms and a family room with overnight accommodation. Every year, the NICU provides round-the-clock care to more than 1100 babies born prematurely or with medical complications. Health Minister Jillian Skinner, who officially opened the new-look NICU last week, said the $7 million upgrade provided a more comfortable and

supportive environment for parents. “A family’s journey through the NICU can be a long one and we want that experience to be the best it possibly can be,” she said. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald added that it was “great news for newborns and families in the Hunter and beyond who receive expert care and support at an enormously stressful time”. Stages two and three of the upgrade, estimated to cost $18 million, include plans for a redeveloped intensive care unit, isolation rooms, a procedure room, staff training areas and office spaces. Stage two works started last month. A separate, $14 million project to construct a new Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at the children’s hospital is also underway and due for completion next year. It will offer expanded specialised care for critically-ill children. - Georgia Osland

A thimble of love

Lambton’s Rosaline Cox just wants to make people happy. With decades of experience as a professional dressmaker, she’s pretty much old hat at it, having spent hours upon hours with each customer in order to bring their visions to life. But lately, she’s been thinking about how she can devote her energy to helping those in need. Faced with the sombre news she had leukaemia in August, Rose was searching for something to keep her mind occupied. Having retired a few years ago, the 69-year-old had sold most of her sewing equipment, but luckily she kept one or two sewing machines. Last month, Rose Sewing for Charity was born. Through Facebook alone, Rose has recruited 49 members (and made many new friends along the way) from all over the Hunter to take part in the charity project, which sees handsewn items donated to local organisations. These include, but are not limited to: ‘fiddle muffs’ – hand muffs with zips, buttons, pom poms and other bits and bobs to calm dementia and Alzheimer’s patients; sensory mats; teddies; preemie baby clothes and Christmas stockings. Rose says she and the other members are limited only by their imaginations. “I want to help everyone,” she said. “If someone has an idea for something, we’ll make it.” The group recently donated several fiddle muffs to the Dementia and Delirium Program at John Hunter Hospital, as well as Orchardtown Road Family Practice – Rose’s doctor’s surgery. In future, Rose hopes to visit nursing homes to distribute fiddle muffs and other

items, as well as playgroups and other centres where children with autism might also benefit from fiddle muffs in particular. She has also joined Angel Gowns Australia, to make outfits for stillborn and deceased babies to be buried in. To get the ball rolling on this still relatively-new venture, the group is calling for donations of money and sewing materials. They are also accepting new members, of all ages, who can choose to meet with the group every second Friday at Rose’s place, or sew from home. Sydney ends Jets’ unbeaten run An in-form Sydney FC put paid to Newcastle’s unbeaten start in the 2016/17 A-League Season, with a convincing 2-0 win in front of 11,873 Jets fans at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday night. Sydney made their intentions felt, after just eight minutes of play, when Alex Brosque found the net for the Sky Blues. Milos Ninkovic lobbed a ball over the top to Brosque who slotted it past Jets keeper Jack Duncan. Despite there being not much to write home about the Jets’

performance in the first half, winger Andrew Hoole gave the Jets their best chance when he found space down the right, crossing to Morten Nordstrand who played the pall into the path of midfielder Steven Ugarkovic, whose shot glanced past the right post. Dominating possession, Sydney went 2-0 up after just three minutes into the second half after Ninkovic slammed a Jack Duncanparried shot back into the net. The Jets travel to Westpac Stadium on Saturday 5 November to take on Wellington Phoenix.

The Red Bull Dune Dusters race returns to Stockton Beach this Sunday 6 November for more action-packed competition. Set over 10 kilometres of treacherous sand dunes, the third annual race will see competitors tackle sand dunes over 100 feet. Participants will travel through checkpoints before crossing the finish line perched atop the steepest sand dune – a location so hard to traverse, you usually need a four-wheel drive to access it. Club determined to win back crown Newcastle Rowing Club is gunning to reclaim the Linwood Throsby Gift title this weekend at the Central Districts Sprint Championships. The club won the crown in 2014 but missed out last year when Newcastle University Boat Club bested Newcastle Grammar School. Last year, Newcastle Rowing Club entered its youngest team yet, with their oldest rower aged 19. This year the club hopes to win with a mix of youth and experienced rowers, and they have been training harder than ever in the lead-up to the event. FIFTY YEARS OF WILD THING It may’ve been almost twenty years between Australian visits for legendary UK band The Troggs, but such is the love we have for them in this country, that their original Newcastle show, slated for November 16 sold out at lightning speed.

Kinks, and he had given us a bunch of songs to pick from, and Wild Thing was one of them, although he intended it to be for someone else. “We obviously jumped on it and we recorded it in just one take, in half an hour, at the end of another one of Larry’s recording sessions and the rest, as they say, is history.” Since hitting the stratosphere in the swinging sixties, the band has barely left the stage, however their founding frontman, the inimitable Reg Presley unfortunately passed away in 2013. Before his death, Presley insisted the band continue, and, honouring his wishes, The Troggs have brought new singer Chris Allen into the fold. Britton said, while Presley left some very big shoes to fill, Allen was definitely living up to the high standard, without just being a mere imitation. “Reg actually got to see Chris perform a couple of times before he died and he gave the ‘thumbsup’ which was nice,” he said. “But, Chris is definitely not trying to imitate Reg, quite the opposite – he’s definitely doing his own thing and he’s fitting into the band very well.” Catch the Troggs at Lizotte’s Lambton on Tuesday 29 November. - Stephen Bisset

Troglodytes (as their fans have long been known) need not fear however, as the boys will be returning to Newcastle for an encore performance at Lizotte’s on Tuesday 29 November. Founding guitarist Chris Britton told Newcastle Weekly it was always nice to see shows sell out, especially given it was more than 50 years ago that the band first stepped onstage. “It’s been quite a while since we were down in Australia, so it’s great to be coming back, and we’re definitely extra chuffed so see shows selling out,” he said. With a list of hits that includes the likes of such ubiquitous rock and roll standards as Wild Thing, With A Girl Like You, I Can’t Control Myself and Love is All Around, it’s not hard to see why. The band are hitting our shores to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Wild Thing – a song that propelled them to worldwide fame, not least of which here in Australia where it knocked Frank Sinatra off the top of the charts in 1966. Britton said the song, written by noted songwriter Chip Taylor, fell into the bands lap quite by accident. “It really was a case of being in the right place at the right time,” he said. “We were managed by Larry Page, who used to look after the

At Sellers Quality Meats, they do things a little differently. The family-owned and run, independent butchery prides itself on offering a truly unique, upmarket experience. Fifth-generation butcher Rod Sellers, whose family shares more than one hundred years’ combined experience, has owned the business since 1989. He started working alongside his father in 1976, when the business was located in Stockton. In 2010, Rod moved the business to its current location in Mitchell Street in Merewether. With nearly forty years’ experience, Rod has whittled the craft of butchery down to a fine art. As well as offering a wide range of tasty traditional morsels, Sellers Quality Meats also manufactures artisanal smallgoods on the premises. Chef Karen Hurry works on-site five days a week to prepare a variety of fresh and frozen ready-to-eat meals, from lasagnes and casseroles to soups and lambs fry. There are also vegetarian meals available, as well as sweet treats such as sticky date pudding. On the more traditional side of things, Rod’s Traditional Australian Tasty sausage earned him two state Australian Meat Industry Council

awards in 2006 and 2010, and second-place at the national competition in 2011. Sellers Quality Meats has won regional awards almost every year since 2006, and is often a frontrunner at Hamilton TAFE’s annual Regional Sausage King Competition. Aside from offering a top-quality product, the butchery itself provides a unique customer experience. Rod says the butchery itself impresses most customers, set inside a large, warehouse-like shopfront with high ceilings that provides ample space for the display cabinets and creates an upmarket atmosphere. And when it comes to customer service, Rod says that’s one of the pre-requisites of the job. “I’ve always been trained by family to be wellminded with staff and customers and be innovative and passionate to connect with them,” he said. As for the trade itself, Rod says you have to have a fire in your belly. “You’ve got to have passion; it’s a unique craft – that’s the challenge.”

The Newcastle Bonsai Society is celebrating 40 years this year and, to see in this auspicious milestone, the group will host an exhibition at Charlestown Bowling Club from Friday 11 November. There will be more than 70 plants on display and visitors are encouraged to vote for their favourite tree. If you’ve ever wanted to know more about the intricate art of bonsai, this three-day event will be the place to do it as experienced bonsai artists will be on hand, over the three days, to offer a wide array of demonstrations to get you started on your next bonsai project. Further, there will be a children’s section where the little ones can make their own bonsai to take home – free of charge. come though the doors, but one, while difficult, certainly sticks out. “You just never know what’s going to come through the door,” she said. “The most interesting thing I’ve seen would have to be a massive doona that was handmade by a group of women and donated to an art gallery. “That job was quite timeconsuming and we had to organize a truck to transport it, but the end result was just incredible.” After 30 years in the framing business, Karen added that there had been many advancements in the industry that serve to preserve your images even better. “We’re seeing a lot of quality, acid-free products whereas, in the beginning,

everything was put on timber which often went mouldy,” she said. “Now, we have a wide range of products that are waterproof for example. Also, glass is now available that cuts out all UV rays. “Styles of art have changed as well – in the old days people were very interested in prints which we don’t see a s much of anymore. This year, spring has been a mixture of late winter, summer, autumn and spring. The winds have been dry, sometimes cold, and then down comes the torrential rain. Gardenias are showing their unhappiness by dropping yellowing leaves. Boost them with cow manure (if in the ground) and water daily. Azaleas and daisies are covered in dying blooms, which should be removed. Daisies should be cut back lightly and given a boost with Searles Flourish to encourage a new flush of flowers. Repot house plants if needed. Feed with a slow-release fertiliser and kickstart them with Green Flourish. Cut off any yellow leaves and if your plant is hard-leafed (not ferns), wipe the leaves over with white oil which will remove dust, prevent insect attack, and shine the leaves. With Christmas only eight weeks away, planting of colour will need to be done urgently. Beds should have been fed with cow manure. Use a good quality potting mix for container-grown annuals. Try a colourful bowl of mixed flowers using begonias, lobelia and spreading petunias. Climbing roses that need pruning should only be cut when flowering has finished. Feed with poultry manure and rose food.

Because every person needs somewhere to live, such real estate is in constant demand. In addition to the high proportion of residential property within the real estate market, there is a large sector generally referred to as commercial property, which can be broken down to include retail shops, commercial offices, bulky goods outlets, service stations, factory workshops and warehouses. The retail sector has, over the years, grown away from the traditional corner shop, to strip shopping precincts and shopping malls. Commercial offices have also evolved from single offices to multi-storey office towers, housing many more technical and service based operations with less face-toface interaction. Service centres, factory workshops and warehouses generally come under industrial zonings, which are located close to major roads, rail, air and sea ports. Buying residential property is usually the simplest, with the most attractive lending terms and interest rates, while commercial property
