Road safety an ongoing concern MP still fighting for change in Warners Bay

From the editor Our cover story, this week, is all about the 2016 Newcastle Toy Run – the oldest and biggest of its kind in Australia. Chatting to Big John Young, one of the main driving forces behind the Toy Run (which supports the Salvation Army) since its inception 39 years ago, I was heartened by his unyielding passion for giving back to the community. John, who was awarded an OAM in 2015 for his services to various charities, is but one of many in our region who work tirelessly to better our communities and that is something that we, as Novocastrians, can all be proud of. Make sure you read all about it on page 14 and get along to the event on Sunday 4 December to support this worthy cause. While our Newcastle Jets may be struggling with form, having won one game from six in the 2016/17 A-League season, it seems it’s a different story in the W-League with the Jets turning in a commanding 4-0 performance against Melbourne Victory on Sunday. All too often, coverage of female sports is eschewed in favour of their male counterparts, but a victory like this deserved to be celebrated, regardless of gender.

Road safety an ongoing concern Further road safety measures are needed to prevent accidents on Hillsborough Road, Warners Bay, according to Member for Charlestown Jodie Harrison. Ms Harrison tabled a notice of motion in parliament, calling on the Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight, Duncan Gay, to allocate funds to the Charlestown to Warners Bay traffic study. In 2011, the state government made a pre-election promise to

allocate $4 million to a Hillsborough Road study. However, this traffic study never eventuated, as the funding was re-allocated to a separate study of the entire stretch of arterial road between Charlestown and Warners Bay, which is currently underway. Ms Harrison said her request to access information on the study – including what was being investigated and when the public could expect results – under the

Tenders out for tip expansion Lake Macquarie council has called for tenders for the expansion of its Awaba Waste Management Facility. The council is seeking applications from interested parties to construct two new landfill cells, a Community Recycling Centre, weighbridge, waste transfer station, wheel wash and an administration building as part of the expansion. The improvements are expected to increase Awaba tip’s life by at least 10 years. Construction is expected to start in 2017, subject to suitable tenders. Tenders close at 2pm on 20 December.

Expectant Aboriginal mothers are the subject of a national quit-smoking trial, led by Newcastle university researchers.

Funding boost for quit-smoking trial round 40% of expectant indigenous Australian mothers smoke – an alarming rate which shows no signs of declining, according to researchers. It is statistics like this a national quit-smoking trial, led

by University of Newcastle public health researchers Professor Billie Bonevski and Dr Gillian Gould, hopes to combat. The pilot study, called Indigenous Counselling and Nicotine (ICAN) QUIT in Pregnancy, recently received

a $2.26 million boost through the National Health and Medical Research Council’s Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases scheme. The study was developed in collaboration with health service providers in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and has already showed high levels of engagement with expectant Aboriginal mothers. Professor Bonevski and Dr Gould are now working with a larger group of about 30 Aboriginal health care services across the country. The four-year funding package will allow researchers to provide full training and resources to staff at half of the health services involved in the trial, with the other half serving as a control group. Professor Jorge Mattes and Laureate Professor Roger Smith AM, from the university’s GrowUpWell and Mothers and Babies research centres, will also

collect health data such as baby birth weight and lung health to highlight the health benefits of quitting smoking for the child. Professor Bonevski said the rate of smoking among pregnant Australian women in general was around 10% and declining, however, that figure for pregnant Aboriginal women hovered around 40%. “A lot of tobacco control measures in Australia have, until recently, been targeted at nonAboriginal Australians, whereas the (ICAN) QUIT resources have been specifically developed to be a health promotion platform for Aboriginal communities as they draw on the knowledge and expertise of the community,” he said. “They are grounded in culturally appropriate material and Aboriginal people deliver the smoking cessation support. Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first hands-free exoskeleton for neurological rehabilitation has received approval for trial in the Hunter. Dubbed the Hunter Exoskeleton for Lower Limb Exercise and Neuro-rehabilitation, or HELLEN for short, the Australian Institute of Neuro-rehabilitation (AIN) initiative is designed to help people who have suffered paralysis from strokes and other acquired brain and spinal injuries stand and move around. The AIN recently received ethics clearance to start the first clinical trial of HELLEN at the University of Newcastle. The AIN is now calling for people who have suffered a stroke or brain injury more than three months ago and have limited mobility to participate in the trial. There are 20 places available. The run, organised by Bikers for Kids, which delivers swags of toys and money to the Salvation Army to help underprivileged children in the Hunter Region, has grown from strength to strength since its inception and organiser ‘Big’ John Young told Newcastle Weekly he was expecting more than 10,000 motorbikes at this year’s event. “This is the oldest and biggest toy run in Australia, and this year is going to be another big one,” he said. “To hear the roar of 12,000 motorbikes and see them coming into Newcastle really is something to behold.” With the event raising more than $40,000 last year, John said he was constantly floored by the generosity of Novocastrians. “I think that the people of Newcastle truly believe that

The right side of Kate’s body started seizing, but it wasn’t until she was taken to hospital, some two hours later, it became apparent she had had a stroke. The episode paralysed the left side of Kate’s body. “For the first couple of years it was really hard,” she said. “I was forced to find ways to write without my book slipping everywhere, tie my shoelaces, open my lunchbox, and get dressed. “But I had to fit in, and as the years went by, I wanted to work and I wanted to travel and I wanted to drive a car, and do everything my peers were doing – I just learnt my own way.” Now the proud mother of fouryear-old daughter Madeleine and three-year-old twin boys Asher and Joshua, Kate has well and truly

Struggle inspires strength hen Mayfield’s Kate Ryan suffered a stroke at age 10, there was little else she could do afterwards but try to “fit in”. It was 1987 and Kate was like any other 10-year-old: bright, bubbly and

full of energy – she took ballet classes, musical lessons, played netball and softball. One afternoon, Kate collapsed during her ballet class. She had felt fine that morning; the

proved to anyone who doubted her, that she can accomplish anything. She has learnt new ways to tackle everyday tasks like changing nappies, tying her hair, opening jars and cutting a watermelon. With this knowledge under her belt, Kate decided, last year, that she wanted to impart this wisdom to others, in the form of a book. In the space of nine months, Kate wrote Beyond Stroke: Living Independently with One Arm. The book is a step-by-step survival guide, with pictures, to achieving basic tasks with one arm – be it due to paralysis, a broken arm or arthritis. summer allergies Summer is here and so are the allergies! Unfortunately, some pet owners dread the hot weather because the onset of summer can mean itchy pets. But why does this happen? Allergies in dogs and cats have several common causes: 1. Flea Allergies The most common skin condition seen by vets is an allergy to flea bites, which causes classic ‘flea allergy dermatitis’. In dogs, this usually starts as a thinning and/ or chewing of the hair over the base of the tail, which can extend to other parts of the body if untreated. Flea dirt can also be identified in the coat as black gritty material. In cats, a common sign of an allergy to flea bites is excessive licking or grooming, which is also sometimes associated with lumpy Emmy the dog with RSPCA Hunter sores. Some animals have cases of veterinarian Dr Amy Howe. hypersensitivity, meaning they are so allergic that a single flea bite can cause their whole body to itch. When a vet diagnoses a pet with ‘flea allergy dermatitis’, it is often met with the owner’s response of “but he/she doesn’t have any fleas”. This is understandable as fleas are hard to find on some pets, or the offending flea may have jumped off before the actual reaction happens. Despite flea allergies being common among animals, there is still good news. Flea allergies are preventable with new ranges of modern products available. Ask our friendly staff to help you choose one suitable for your pet.

2. Inhaled Allergens Dogs and cats can also be sensitive to allergens such as pollens, dust or cigarette smoke. Inhaled allergens are hard to avoid, as the simple act of your pet breathing can bring them into contact with allergens floating in the air. In summer, many plants are flowering and pollen is released into the air, causing your pets to become itchy. This sort of allergy often has your pets showing signs of a reaction by the licking of paws or rubbing of face and ears.

3. Contact Allergies Many pets are allergic to contact with grasses or plants such as the Wandering Jew. There also may be a rash on the belly area. If your pet is showing signs of having an allergic reaction, bathe them weekly with a hypoallergenic, oatmeal shampoo. Ensure that your flea control program is adequate. Many pets need vet treatment to help control the itching and skin inflammation associated with an allergy.

JP giving back to the community For most people, 50 years is a long time to be doing anything. Not so for Waratah resident, Brian Dee. Brian, who clocked up 50 years of service as a Justice of the Peace last year, wanted to give something back to the community. To that end, he is offering a free JP service to

the people of the Hunter region. “When my wife passed away in 2014, I guess you could say I was lost – I didn’t really have any motivation,” Brian told Newcastle Weekly. “I was awarded a plaque for 50 years of service, which kind of stirred something in me.”

After discovering that his local Newcastle Permanent Branch was without a JP, Brian offered his services and things have just snowballed from there. “I also distributed business cards around Waratah and I’ve had a magnet made to go on my car - when I’m not on the road I keep it in my front window. You’d be surprised with how many people I’ve had knock on my door,” he said. With business going from strength to strength, Brian said it was the sense of ‘giving’ back’ that kept him at it. “There’s nothing in it for me at all other than the satisfaction of helping someone out,” he said. Brian added that while he was happy to travel to areas close to his native Waratah to witness documents, people who lived a bit further afield would have to arrange a time and a mutually agreeable location. When it comes to mathematics, Noah Handley and Wesley Hallot are two of the brightest young minds in the region – and they have the awards to show for it. Newcastle East Public School student, Noah, and New Lambton Public School student, Wesley, finished equal-first place in the year 6 division of the 36th annual Newcastle Permanent Primary

Schools Mathematics Competition. The pair sat the 35-question exam paper along with almost 19,000 other students from 337 primary schools across the Hunter, Central Coast, Northern Rivers, Mid North Coast, New England and Central West regions. Different from other exams, the competition challenges students to complete the exam paper without a calculator, ruler or geometrical instruments. Newcastle Permanent chief executive officer Terry Millett congratulated the boys on their achievements. “It’s clear Noah and Wesley have an aptitude for mathematics – I’m sure we will be seeing great things from them in the years to come,” he said. He may’ve been treading the boards for more than 40 years, but don’t go thinking that pop icon Leo Sayer has lost any of his passion for performance.

“All fans have their own favorite,” he said. “Sometimes it’s the big hits like You Make Me Feel Like Dancing and other times is the more meaningful album tracks like Giving it All Away which I wrote for Roger Daltrey. So, hopefully there’s something in there for everyone.” Having fallen in love with this country some years ago, Leo finally took the plunge and became an Australian citizen in 2009. He said he was enamoured with the positivity he found in Australia, especially in the music scene. “The music scene is just so positive and supportive and I love hanging around with my musical mates like Richard Claption, Jimmy Barnes and Ross Wilson – all of us, mind you, thought we would have careers that wouldn’t last four months let alone forty years. “But I think that positivity is, especially given the current world climate politically, something that we all could use a little more of.” Leo Sayer plays at Wests City on Saturday 3 December. -Stephen Bisset

“For me, it’s a lot like an actor playing Shakespeare – I just fall into type,” Leo told Newcastle Weekly “I just love it, in a way, it kind of scares me to over analyze it but I have a definite feeling that I am where I am supposed to be – on stage, a cross between a court jester and a wandering minstrel.” Leo, whose career has seen him nab a Grammy award and more than twenty top ten singles, sell more than 80 million albums and write hits for the likes of Roger Daltery, Dolly Parton, Gene Pitney and Tina Turner, will be winging his way back to Newcastle as part of his Greatest Hits tour. “I’ve actually fired the support act so I’ll be up there for two sets with a bit of a break in the middle,” he said. “I’ve got a great band with me and there’s some great interplay onstage. It’s certainly an energetic show. Leo added that, like the tour’s title suggests, fans could expect to hear all the hits including You Make Me Fell Like Dancing, The Show Must Go On and Long Tall Glasses however there will be a few lesser-known tracks thrown in for good measure.

IT’S VEGAS, BABY Following on from a mammoth sold-out tour of the UK and North America, The Rat Pack From Vegas, arguably the world’s premiere Rat Pack tribute, are coming back to Australia to give punters a slice of classic Vegas style. Johnny Edwards, who plays Dean Martin in the show, told Newcastle Weekly that, after such a successful Australian tour, last time around, not even the tyranny of distance could dampen spirits. “It is a long time to get there but, you know what? As long as we have our good friends Johnny Walker and Jack Daniels on board with us, the time just flies, man,” he laughed. “Honestly, when we’re on a flight, by the time the plane touches down, everyone on board is part of the Rat Pack From Vegas entourage.” Featuring the formidable trio of

Frank Sinatra (played by Robbie Howard), Dean Martin (played by Edwards) and Sammy Davis Jr (played by Nicholas Brooks) the original Rat Pack dominated Vegas casinos in the 1960s with their unparalleled brand of triple-threat showmanship (singing, comedy and dance) and Edwards said that this show was about embodying the spirit of the talented trio. ‘These guys were just so charismatic by themselves but, when they were together, they were unstoppable,” he said. “For me, Dean Martin was just a consummate performer and when

he was with the Rat Pack, one of his main jobs was to make Frank laugh – I like to think I’m a pretty funny guy so I hope that I can live up to it.” Edwards, who cut his teeth as an Elvis impersonator before taking on the Dean Martin persona, said he had much in common with Martin. “We both love to laugh, we love to sing and we love a drink, so it’s really not that much of a stretch.” The Rat Pack from Vegas play at Lizotte’s, Lambton on Friday 25 November. -Stephen Bisset

LASHINGS OF ENTERTAINMENT Well-known, multi award-winning local entertainer Wayne Rogers will be bringing a brand new show to Wests Lambton this weekend. Lashes, Legs and Lyrics, which as been nominated for a MO award for best production show, is a full production extravaganza, complete with showstoppers, showgirls and a stunning show band. “It’s all in the name, really,” Wayne told Newcastle Weekly. “Lashes - because I do like the long lashes, legs - because of my long legs and lyrics - because of the beautiful lyrics contained in the songs.” While Wayne was loath to divulge what songs would make the set for Lashes Legs and Lyrics he did say that he would be turning his attention to some iconic torch singers. “People can expect to hear songs from the likes of Dolly Parton, Shirley Bassey (she’s my absolute favorite) and Peter Allen. This time I’ll

Well, Carter will be heading back to Belmont Bowling Club, this weekend to give punters another dose of his Chisel Revived show. Having only taken over the franchise two months ago, manager Kevin Long said the main focus of the busy coffee house was to create a sense of community among its customers. “I like to look at it as a guest house for people, rather than just a place to get a coffee,” Kevin said. “I really want to foster a sense of community here. Coffee shops are places where people come together to share their lives and that’s what it’s all about here. The number of wonderful stories I’ve heard from regulars since taking over is just amazing.”

Aside from the great range of beverages – both hot and cold – on offer, Kevin said the store was also bolstering its food menu to include more fare made in-house. “We’re definitely ramping up the food menu,” he said. “We are continually expanding our menu to make light meals, like sandwiches, inhouse. Surge in building approvals

Building approvals have hit an eightyear high in the Hunter and Central Coast regions. The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show that 5,620 new homes were given the green light over the 12 months to September 2016. This figure is more than double that of the year of October 2008 to September 2009, during which 3,150 approvals were granted. The following year, that figure spiked, but declined shortly thereafter. It has been on the rise since. By comparison, 5,332 dwellings were approved from October 2014 to September 2015. Multi-unit approvals have increased by 9% year-on-year, while detached house approvals – the largest component of the local housing market

– have jumped 3%. Hunter Executive Director of the Housing Industry Association – the peak body for Australia’s residential building industry – Craig Jennion, said activity across the region continued to grow. “While in other areas of Australia the latest ABS building approvals saw big reductions, reinforcing a concern that the overall market has peaked, an overall increase of 5 per cent indicates that is not the case locally,” he said. “With very low lending rates, a high approvals pipeline, surges in coal prices and recent reports of mining expansion, business and consumer confidence should continue to grow over the near term providing further support to the residential construction sector.” - Georgia Osland
