12 From the editor Given the amount of musical, sporting, and theatrical talent we have on offer in our Hunter Region, it’s not surprising that outsiders might think there was “something in the water”.

Well, that point could certainly be argued when talking about local singer-songwriter Lyn Bowtell. Bowtell, who most of us would know as a prodigious talent through her solo work and with Hunter-based “supergroup” Bella, has just nabbed a formidable seven CMAA Golden Guitar Award nominations. Bowtell’s haul included five nominations for her outfit Bennett, Bowtell and Urquhart and another two for collaborations with Adam Harvey, Catherine Britt and Beccy Cole.

It’s fantastic to see Hunter talent recognised on the national stage and we at Newcastle Weekly are hoping for a Bowtell blitz in Tamworth next year.

So, it’s officially just 17 sleeps until Christmas and, true to form, I’m still yet to buy a single present. Every year I promise myself that I will have all shopping done by the first week of December and, every year, I’m left to fight the throngs of last-minute shoppers while I look for items that sold out weeks ago. While the shopping centres, filled with festive decorations and with carols wafting through the air do tend to fill you with the Christmas spirit, rushing around at the last minute certainly does not. Hopefully, you all have your Christmas shopping sorted.

Give back Boxing Day Boxing Day is sacred. For many, it’s a day for unwinding with family and friends; eating Christmas leftovers and reflecting on the year that was. But for retail, fast food and warehouse workers, there is no rest.

The Baird government’s trial of reinstating retail trading on Boxing Day is in its second year,

this year, which means workers in these sectors must don their uniforms and go to work like any other day.

While shops wishing to open their doors on Boxing Day may only do so if their employees are there voluntarily, a survey by the Newcastle branch of the Shop

Distributive and Allied Employees Alliance (SDA) found, last year, onein-four retail workers did not freely elect to work, and felt pressured by their employers to do so.

Not so long ago, baker Lynsey Burn, of Wallsend, was in this position. Miss Burn was required to work every Boxing Day during her four-year apprenticeship at Baker’s Delight.

“It was part and parcel of what you had to do,” she said. Miss Burn now works in the bakery at Coles, where, thankfully, she does not have to work on Boxing Day. However, the Coles union delegate showed her support for other workers at a rally at Speers Point Park, last week, hosted by the SDA. Local MPs joined retail workers in the park to decorate a tree with 1300 paper baubles, each inscribed

with a personal message from the retail workers, stating why they wanted Boxing Day off.

“I’ll make the stand because I know what it’s like [working on Boxing Day],” Miss Burn said.

“There’s no need to be open on Boxing Day. People can do their sales shopping the following day.

“I’d rather spend time with my family and friends, doing things that I like, just like how the politicians will be spending their Boxing Day.” SDA Newcastle branch secretary Barbara Nebart echoed these sentiments, arguing there was little to no economic benefit to stores opening on Boxing Day. “While there is no additional benefit to the economy, there is a huge social cost to retail workers and their families,” Ms Nebart said.

news Hospital construction left in lurch

Illegal dumpers beware Hunter Councils have launched a campaign to combat the amount of illegal dumping in the region.

The focus of the two-month campaign will be billboards and bus-back advertising throughout the nine participating LGAs: Cessnock; Dungog; Lake Macquarie; Maitland; Muswellbrook; Newcastle; Port Stephens; Singleton and Upper Hunter, to promote the message that our natural environment is not

a place to dump unwanted goods.

Hunter Councils’ regional waste education coordinator Chantelle Sage said all of the campaign material would be available on Hunter Council’s recently launched Small Acts Big Change website (smallactsbigchange.com.au).

People with information on illegal dumping should report it to the Regional Illegal Dumping Squad on 131 555 or on line at ridsquad.com.au

Uncertainty surrounds the construction start date of the new Lower Hunter Hospital at Metford.

Member for Maitland Jenny Aitchison said, in a briefing by Hunter New England Health and Health Infrastructure NSW, she was told if suitable private operators were not found in the tender process, the government might return to a fully public model

to operate the hospital.

In that case, the construction of the hospital would start before 2019.

“In 2011 the Liberal government promised a John Hunter-sized hospital and in the 2015 they promised construction prior to 2019,” she said.

“Now they are saying it will be half the size and will need private money to build it quicker.”

Third bin for Maitland Residents in Maitland, as well as Cessnock and Singleton, will be supplied with a new bin as part of the roll-out of a kerbside garden organics collection service.

The bins, which will sport a lime green lid, will be used to dispose of a range of garden organics including: grass clippings; prunings; weeds; leaves; and sticks and small branches. The material will then be processed into compost to be used in local parks and sporting grounds.

The roll-out of the bins will start in January and will take about seven weeks. The first collection will commence on Monday 6 March 2017.

City responds to changing values Lake Macquarie council has adopted a new vision and set of community values to launch the city into the 21st century. The Lake Macquarie City Vision and Community Values statements replace those first created in the early 1990s.

They will guide future planning and policies, and provide direction for how the city responds

to change and growth.

Lake Macquarie City Council’s Manager Integrated Planning, Sharon Pope, said the documents were developed in close collaboration with the community, through the Shape Your Future campaign.

One of the most comprehensive community engagement projects ever undertaken by the

council, Shape Your Future reached tens of thousands of residents through public forums, phone surveys, pop-up stalls, emails, e-newsletters, social media and ‘guerilla’ advertising.

“Shape Your Future reached 90,000 properties in Lake Macquarie,” Ms Pope said.

“Our objective was to encourage participation.”

While there are similarities between the new vision and values and those drawn up in the 90s, Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser said the new documents reflected the modern-day priorities of Lake Macquarie residents.

“The community has told us they consider council’s role in the modern era to go well beyond the old maxim of ‘roads, rates and rubbish’,” Cr Fraser said.

“They expect council to be a guardian of the environment, a driver of economic growth and diversification, and a provider of services and facilities that enrich the cultural and social life of the community.”

The Lake Macquarie City Vision and Values will be the foundation of the council’s new Community Strategic Plan, to be released in 2017, and a new land-use strategy, for which planning is currently under way.

Castle pays tribute With last Saturday marking the International Day for People with a Disability, Hunterbased disability employment provider Castle Personnel hosted a staff recognition day at Town Hall in Newcastle, last week, featuring two very special guests.

World renowned artist Tim Sharpe, who has autism, and who created the cartoon

character Laser Beak Man when he was just 11 years old, was on hand to talk about his incredible journey.

Tim, who was the subject of a 2012 documentary that was shown at the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art in New York, has seen Laser Beak Man turned into a cartoon series for the ABC which has been screened here, in New Zealand and throughout Asia.

The second speaker was 20-year-old Will Clarke and his mum Ange. Will, also autistic, can’t read and his speech is significantly delayed but he’s started a business recycling old cricket bats, which he then has painted by artists.

Castle Personnel secured two cricket bats for Will and had them painted by legendary local artist John Earle and up-and-coming Lake Macquarie artist Josh Walters. These bats were be presented to Will to be used at an upcoming auction in Canberra.

An Australian-first electric bike share initiative tops a list of 12 innovative Newcastle projects to win a share in $21,000 worth of place-making grants.

Bike-share company BYKKO received $2000 from Newcastle City Council, through the Make Your Place Community Grants program, to install a bike-share station outside Recharge CafĂŠ, on the corner of Dick and Hall streets in Newcastle West.

During summer, residents can trial one of three electric-assisted bikes for free.

They work just like a regular bike, but have a built-in electric motor to help with pedalling.

Electric bike sharing is already a global movement in cities like Berlin, Copenhagen, Milan, Madrid and Oslo.

It uses wireless communication

and GPS tracking, coupled with intelligent control and management of the bikes.

Other projects to win 2016 Make Your Place grants ranged from beautification projects to a pop-up dance theatre to history-telling initiatives.

Boost for local tourism The Hunter tourism industry is set to benefit from a $13 million injection, with the opening of a new Regional Tourism Fund.

The fund replaces the previous Contestable Regional Visitor Economy Fund, and is part of the NSW government’s strategy to re-energise tourism across the state.

Between 2016 and 2019, the fund will help stimulate tourism and create more jobs, from providing grants to assist with infrastructure and accommodation projects, to delivering marketing campaigns.

The new fund provides increased investment of $2.5 million in the regional economy on a matched, dollar-for-dollar basis.

Four of the group’s 10 volunteers won awards in recognition of their dedication to nurturing the Lake Macquarie environment, through regular weeding, planting and general maintenance of six sites across Warners Bay. Group secretary Ann Loughran, who has been involved

with Landcare for about 20 years and was one of the founding members of the Warners Bay group, won the John Hughson Soaring with the Eagles Award – a lifetime achievement award that recognises one’s contribution to Landcare in the region.

“I was very shocked to receive the award, but this is what I know, and I love it,” Ann said.

Annette Ryan won a 10year service award, while Ken McGregor and Steve Dewar each won a Landcare Achiever award.

Documents reveal motivation behind TAFE cuts NSW treasurer Gladys Berejiklian cut $210 million from TAFE’s budget, new freedom of information documents reveal.

The sum, which TAFE was asked to hand over by August, had been identified by the government as “surplus” to TAFE’s working capital requirements and thus should be “repatriated”.

Shadow Skills Minister Prue Car said the move was part of a housekeeping drive to improve Ms Berejiklian’s bottom line.

“It didn’t matter that TAFE said it needed the money to pay for the so-called reform program Gladys Berejiklian has effectively bullied TAFE into handing over the money,” she said.

Road safety boost for Newcastle, Port Stephens Pedestrian safety is on the road to improvement in Newcastle and Port Stephens.

Traffic light upgrades have been completed in Mayfield (Maitland Road and Carrington Street intersection) and Minmi (Woodford Street and Minmi Road) to allow more time for pedestrians to cross, before giving cars the green light to turn across the intersections.

The upgrades were part of the NSW government’s $5 million investment in improving safety at signalised crossings throughout the state. Port Stephens Family and Neighbourhood Services was awarded a Community Road Safety Grant to deliver road safety education program.

Club stalwart missed by all Newcastle PCYC is a little quieter without Eric Mattson roaming its halls. The club stalwart, who dedicated 50 years of his life to the organisation, and to what is now the only PCYC brass band left standing,

passed away last month, aged 96.

The Birmingham Gardens resident joined the PCYC in 1960, not long after the club established its brass band.

Having learnt to play the bugle

and other various instruments from a very young age, Eric took his sons to the club to join.

It wasn’t long before Eric became involved as a conductor and instructor and, once he did, no one would ever forget him.

He taught the littlies in the junior band and, once practice was over, he would tutor them privately, at no cost.

Newcastle PCYC advisory committee member Roz McDonald said Eric taught with great patience and passion.

“His passion was getting kids started, from blowing raspberries in the mouthpiece to learning music and playing in the senior band,” she said.

Two days a week – week in, week out, Eric made his way to the club for band practice, right up until he was 92.

He was heavily involved in fundraising for the band through Music for Youth, a group of parents

of children in the band.

Together, they sent the band to state, national and even international competitions.

Eric was made a life governor of the club, and a life member of the NSW Band Association.

Newcastle PCYC club manager Jake Chatfield said, from the moment he first met Eric, he knew it meant a lot to him to be a part of the club and the community.

“Eric has definitely left a legacy here,” he said.

The PCYC was well represented at Eric’s funeral, turning out in droves to show their support for his family.

One of Eric’s students – 24-yearold Angelia Gordon, whom he taught from a young age – played the bugle call on Eric’s own bugle that he had passed down to Angelia.

Newcastle PCYC brass band musical director Teena Wallace said Eric would be dearly missed by all.

news Swansea dredging commences Young Parents Group provides a space for young parents and their children to connect with others.

Young parents’ group revived The only known young parents’ group in Lake Macquarie, which had been inactive for some time due to a lack of funding, has been revived.

The Place: Charlestown Community Centre’s Young Parents Group was placed in jeopardy midlast year when it ran out of funding.

Previously funded by a state government grant, which was only ever intended to be short-term, the program operated on a month-tomonth basis through the generosity of community donations.

The program is now taking referrals once more, thanks to a $35,035 grant from the nib foundation.

Developed in 2013, the program provides a safe space for parents in their teens and early-to-mid twenties to connect and learn parenting skills while engaging in fun activities with their little ones.

Young Parents Group meets every Friday at The Place from 11.45am to 2.15pm. For more information phone The Place on 4032 5500.

Works to dredge a sand shoal in the Swansea Channel started last week, with Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald saying the works will improve boating safety ahead of the Christmas holidays.

The $666,000 project will reduce shoaling that had re-formed in the navigation channel between the southern entrance to Swan Bay and the drop over into Lake Macquarie. The dredge will demobilise before Christmas and return after the school holidays to remove sand from the shoal in the channel opposite the Pelican airstrip.

“The dredging is necessary to ensure the ongoing safety, utility and enjoyment of the Channel and its surroundings,” Mr MacDonald said.

“More dredging will be carried out after the holidays to remove sand from the shoal in the channel opposite Pelican airstrip.”

If one thing is for sure, it’s that Hamilton author Paul Kraus knows a thing or two about healing.

Paul has survived asbestosrelated mesothelioma, brain cancer and all but beaten prostate cancer.

When diagnosed with mesothelioma, he was told he had six to nine months to live.

That was almost 20 years ago.

Doctors said it was nothing short of a miracle that Paul recovered.

However, a short time after he received the all clear, at the end of 2012, Paul was diagnosed with a meningioma brain tumour, and, only weeks later, prostate cancer.

While he still lives with prostate cancer, Paul’s health journey has inspired his latest book, Poetic Medicine.

The collection of 40 poems –

some written very recently, others, before Paul was even diagnosed with mesothelioma – explores healing of the mind, body and soul.

The book is Paul’s 20th, but is his first published book of poems.

Previously, as an English teacher, Paul had published a number of history books, but his last six have focused on health and healing.

He said he had always loved poetry, but it was his journey over the past 20 years that had helped him find the words to express his emotions.

While most of the verses in Poetic Medicine were written at a time when Paul was “under great stress” when he was told he didn’t have long to live, Paul said they were not all about being faced with death.

THE PROOF IS IN THE PUDDING It’s been part of the Novocastrian Christmas culture for 40 years but apart from tingling the Hunter’s collective taste-buds, the Adamstown Pudding Kitchen has also been nourishing the spirit of our communities.

Since its inception, 45 years ago, the Adamstown Pudding Kitchen has been donating a percentage of profits back into various charities and, this year, has struck a partnership with Lifeline that has placed the puddings in all of the Lifeline stores throughout the Hunter and Central Coast.

So, just what is it about these

puddings in particular that has us Hunterites clambering over each other to grab one? Linda Barnier from the Pudding Kitchen knows why.

“The majority of our workers are volunteers and everything is done out of love,” she said.

“Everything is handmade, boiled for hours on end and hung up to dry and the end result is a consistently moist and delicious pudding.

“We actually have people catching the train up from Sydney to buy one and, this year, we had a woman from Italy enquire about puddings.”

Reverend Rod Pattenden, from the Adamstown Uniting Church, (whose grounds house the Pudding Kitchen) said that, while activity was reaching fever pitch at the moment, the end result was worthwhile.

“80% of the product is sold in December, so as you can imagine, we’re all quite exhausted,” he laughed.

The Gang’s back in town Iconic 70s rockers the Ted Mulry Gang are back on the road and will be pulling out all the stops for a special show at Belmont 16s, this weekend.

The This One’s For Ted tour will see all original remaining members, Les Hall, Gary Dixon and Herm Kovac together for the first time in 25 years.

Newcastle was, in fact, where it truly all began for Ted Mulry Gang. The band first played together at Newcastle’s Matara festival in 1972, and their most famous hit Jump in My Car was first played on Australian radio by Barry Chapman from Newcastle’s 2NX. With the passing of Ted Mulry in 2001, his younger brother, Steve, will fill his shoes behind the mic. Steve sang two songs with the band at the Gimme Ted benefit in 2001 and got two thumbs up from his big brother.

Favourites, like Darktown Strutters Ball, Crazy, My Little Girl, Jamaica Rum, Heart of Stone and many others will feature in what promises to be a great night of rock ’n’ roll. The Ted Mulry Gang will play at Belmont 16s on Saturday 10 December.

BOWTELL BLITZES NOMINATIONS Hunter Valley-based singer songwriter Lyn Bowtell has scooped the pool at the CMAA Golden Guitar Award nominations in Sydney, last week, bagging seven nods. side from performing onstage with her ‘supergroup’ Bennett, Bowtell and Urquart at the event, the trio also grabbed nominations for duo or group of the year, alternative album of the year, APRA song of the year, heritage song of the year and bluegrass recording of the year.

If that wasn’t enough, Bowtell’s duet with Adam Harvey on the track Bartender Blues and her collaboration with Beccy Cole and Catherine Britt – FU Cancer – also received nominations.

“It’s so exciting – I had no idea there would be so many nominations,”

Lyn told Newcastle Weekly.

“Although, before the event, my mum said I would get eight nominations and I ended up with seven so, I don’t know maybe she’s psychic.”

It’s truly been a bravura year for Bowtell, commencing in January with the release of Bennett Bowtell and Urqhart’s self-titled debut album – one that continues to cause quite a stir in the country music fraternity.

“We’ve done a bunch of touring together this year, as well, which has been fantastic and I’ve learned so much from them.”

“When Kevin, Felicity and I decided to record an album, we looked in our diaries last year and discovered that we only had two days to write and two days to record, so that’s how we did it,” she explained.

Aside from the trio, collaborations with Adam Harvey, Catherine Britt and Beccy Cole, as well as her role as director of the CMAA Academy of Country Music have kept Lyn quite busy

but, on top of all that, she is trying to find the time to complete her next solo album.

“It’s definitely busy at the moment, there’s no doubt about that,” she laughed. “In between all that, I’m trying to finish writing the next solo album. It never ends, but it’s a good problem to have.

The Newcastle Conservatorium’s and Australia’s first breast cancer choir, the D Majors will be launching their debut single True Survivor at a special concert at Adamstown Uniting Church (cnr Brunker and Glebe roads, Adamstown) this weekend.

Written by choir member, Alison Lancey, True Survivor is an uplifting track that was inspired by the choir itself. “I wrote the song about three years ago, after I had been with the choir for 12 months,” Alison said.

“I guess I was just in awe of being around these remarkable women, many of whom were going through cancer treatment. I was just amazed at the strength and passion these women showed, so I wrote the song.”

Alison said that, after some time away from the choir, she came back to find they had incorporated the song into the set.

“We decided to record it and we enlisted the services of Gareth Hudson to arrange it and it’s sounding absolutely fantastic,” she said.

The D Majors perform at Adamstown Uniting Church on Sunday 11 December from 2 to 4pm.

“I didn’t want to feel sad about it, and I didn’t want to feel like I failed,� she said. “In fact, I didn’t fail – [the gallery] was doing really well. It was just getting to be too much work for me, and I wanted to go out of that space on a high.�

But this wasn’t the end for Barbara, a passionate jewellery-maker of 30 years and a keen sculptor.

Nanshe Gallery closed in August, and, after a month exhibiting her jewellery and sculptures in London and Berlin, Barbara returned to

reopen her business, with a new focus, in a cosy space in The Emporium, in the Hunter Street Mall, through the Renew Newcastle project. She named her space Barbara Nanshe Studio.

Barbara no longer features the work of other local artists alongside her own, but has, instead, chosen to focus on bringing her own creative dreams to life. “I feel like, for once in my life, I’m going to achieve my goals of putting all of my designs I have in my head into matter,� she said.

After a month abroad on a “cathartic� journey, artist Barbara Nanshe returned to Newcastle, earlier this year, confident she had made the right decision to close her Beaumont Street art gallery.

The Cancer Council NSW’s Eat It To Beat It program suggests Strawberry Santas as a healthier Christmas dessert alternative.

It can be particularly difficult during the silly season to refrain from overindulging in sugary, salty and fatty foods, but the Cancer Council NSW is encouraging Hunter residents to embrace festive fruit and vegetables this Christmas.

The message stems from the Cancer Council’s nutrition program, Eat It To Beat It, which works with parents year-round to help families add more fruit and vegetables to the household diet to ward off cancer and improve health.

Hunter Nutrition Project Officer Clare Murphy said, while Christmas offered a tempting abundance of “sometimes” foods, indulging in these often led to

tiredness, bloating, and could add unwanted kilos to the waistline.

Miss Murphy said adding fruit and veg to the festive menu was a great way to counteract these ill-effects and get a welcome energy boost.

“These foods provide longlasting energy which won’t leave you nodding off straight after the family lunch,” she said.

“Adding more fruit and vegetables to the dining table not only provides a variety of nutrients and colour to the table, eating it also gives us sustainable energy.

Cricket coaching clinic giveaway Former Australian pace bowler Nathan Bracken will be inspiring the young cricketing talent of Newcastle, when he heads up the coaching panel for the upcoming Shaun Brown Cricket Coaching Clinics.

Bracken who played 116 One Day Internationals for Australia, will also be joined by fellow cricketing legend Len Pascoe.

“The clinics provide an excellent learning experience for enthusiastic cricketers between the ages of 6 to 16. Our program covers all facets of cricket, 20/20, One Day, and Test formats - all aimed at improving participant’s skills, knowledge and enjoyment of the game,” Shaun Brown said.

The camp will be held at Wallsend Oval on Thursday 19 and Friday 20 January 2017, from 9am to 3pm each day.
