This week

Such was the case last week when I rose, on Saturday morning, to see Channel 7 News reporting on a wild, out-of-control house party in Charlestown the night before.
In the end, a total of 26 police cars attended the scene, the Pacific Highway had to be closed briefly, a total of 11 people were arrested and two teenage girls were taken to John Hunter Hospital with suspected drug overdoses. While the efforts of the police in containing the fracas must be applauded, such anti-social behaviour and flagrant disregard for authority is never acceptable. While not wanting to sound like an old ‘fuddy-duddy’, back in my formative teenage years, I was too scared to even say “boo” to a police officer, let alone hurl verbal abuse and bottles at them. Perhaps the arguably antiquated notions of respect – for oneself, for others, and for authority – need a bit of a revisit so scenes like this don’t happen again.

According to Lake Macquarie Local Area Command, an estimated crowd of 300 revellers, comprised mostly of juveniles, descended on an Ida Street property and, when police first responded they were pelted with bottles.
Have a great week.

Schools “left to decay” ome Hunter schools face up to a thirty-year wait for basic repairs under current government funding allocations, documents obtained by NSW Labor show. Waratah West Public School tops the list, with a sizeable
$723,430 maintenance backlog that will take an estimated 33 years to address. In the 2016-17 state budget, the government allocated just over $22,000 in funding to the school. The picture isn’t much brighter for Argenton Public School, which
could be waiting 23 years to whittle down its $311,300 backlog. Awaba Public School follows closely behind, with an estimated $171,090 in repair works and a 21-year wait. Even at the lower end of the scale, Newcastle Middle School in Wallsend – a school for children with disabilities – faces a 20-year wait to have $353,453 in repair works done. These maintenance jobs range from broken ceiling fans and threadbare carpet to damaged roofs and broken windows. Shadow Minister for the Hunter Kate Washington said across the region, schools were being left to decay. “Parents expect minor repairs in schools to be addressed promptly, not allowed to build up into the massive backlog we now face,” she said.

“Local families deserve better. We need to be building more schools in growing areas, not letting our existing schools suffer.” However, a Department of Education spokesperson said, in a portfolio of the department’s size, it was not feasible to have no outstanding maintenance work. “The department’s over 2,200 schools will continue to age and there will always be maintenance work to be done,” the spokesperson said. In addition, “many maintenance items listed in the document referenced by the state opposition have already been completed”. The department also assured Hunter parents that no student or staff member is placed at risk, with any broken items in classrooms addressed “as a matter of priority”. - Georgia Osland

Lifeline Hunter Central Coast chief executive officer Gillian Summers welcomes the Text4Good text message crisis support service.
10
Lifeline Australia has tapped into the nation’s mobile phone dexterity by developing a new way to connect and help people in crisis. The national suicide prevention and crisis support service, in conjunction with Social Ventures Australia, has created a detailed outline for Text4Good – a text message service that will allow people to seek help via SMS. It is the first service of its kind in Australia. Text4Good will complement Lifeline’s existing telephone crisis line and online Crisis Support Chat service, which together receive more than a million requests for help a year. It will be integrated with local Primary Health Networks. Lifeline Australia chief
executive officer Pete Schmigel said, with more and more people communicating via text message in good times and bad, Text4Good had huge potential to support people when and where help was most needed, in a simple and easily accessible way. Lifeline Hunter Central Coast chief executive officer Gillian Summers said she would be pushing for the service to be trialled in the Hunter. “We are a region of texters and if that’s how people are communicating, we need to be there,” she said. It is expected trials will start later this year. For 24/7 crisis support, phone Lifeline on 13 11 14 or visit lifeline.org.au/gethelp - Georgia Osland
Government abandons council mergers The state government has abandoned planned council mergers across regional New South Wales. NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced on Tuesday that, aside from council mergers in Sydney, which will still go ahead, no council will be forced to amalgamate with another. This includes Newcastle, Port Stephens, Maitland and Dungog councils, whose term elections were placed on hold last September. The decision follows nine months of legal action waged by some councils, which fought to remain standalone. Newcastle Weekly previously reported that the government was considering plebiscites to decide the future of some councils whose mergers were still pending, but this is no longer the case.

Breaking bad habits
Available Thursday 16th - Sunday 19th of February or while stocks last.
Newcastle will take part in a world-first trial of a new drug to treat cannabis dependence. The Newcastle Drug and Alcohol Service, based at the Newcastle Community Health Centre in Newcastle West, is one of four clinics across the state to trial the drug nabiximols (Sativex), administered as an oral spray. The trial will investigate the drug’s efficacy, safety and costeffectiveness. Some participants will be given the oral spray, while
others will be given a placebo. This will be combined with counselling. Researchers aim to recruit 140 cannabis-dependent users aged between 18 and 65 who use cannabis four or more days a week, on average; who want to quit, have tried to quit, but have been unsuccessful, and are prepared to attend weekly clinic appointments for 13 weeks and take medication as directed. entral Village is a new, over-55s community, conveniently located in the inner-city suburb of Mayfield East, just four kilometres from Newcastle CBD. This master-planned village offers a lifestyle unmatched anywhere in the Hunter. Newcastle harbour, beaches, entertainment, recreation and retail services are all at your fingertips. The village’s architecturally-designed homes meet universal design principles, making them well-suited to older people and adaptable for people who require mobility assistance. There are a range of modern, single-level cottages to choose from, combining style and functionality, with a number of cost-cutting innovations including energy-saving LED lighting, energy efficient gas hot water and passive cooling systems. If you’re thinking of downsizing, there are several reasons why Central Village Mayfield is a stand-out choice. Firstly, when you purchase in a land lease
village, you don’t pay stamp duty because you are leasing the land. You will generally pay a lot less for a new home than what you would sell your old home for. When you live in a village community, you’re investing in yourself. It’s no longer about the job, the garden, the house or the kids – it’s about you. Just a short walk from Mayfield Wests, you’ll have access to the pool, gym, cafes, as well as supermarkets, the beach and Newcastle CBD. You’ll be living with like-minded people in peace and quiet. There will be no noisy university students renting next door, and you’ll have the opportunity to engage with your neighbours or retire to your home if you wish. Living in a new home also takes away the hassle of maintaining an older home. Lastly, Central Village Mayfield provides you with all the services you need to make a smooth transition from your old home to your new one, including marketing, presentation, negotiation and even removals.

A swell honour Like most volunteers when publicly lauded for their efforts, Nelson Bay’s Laurie Nolan is modest in his response. “I’m only doing my job,” he says. The Marine Rescue Port Stephens volunteer of six years became the first person, last Friday, to receive the Marine Rescue NSW
Medal for Valour. It was Laurie’s quick thinking and selflessness on 6 and 7 January 2016 that earned him the honour. That day and night, there were five mayday calls to the Port Stephens radio base, during an East Coast Low. As the leading crew member on board Port Stephens 40, Laurie was among seven other crew members who attended a mayday call from racing yacht M3, which had been swept along the coastline to Seal Rocks with no power and no sails in 5.6-metre swell. While attempting to throw M3 a towline, the rescue vessel was knocked down three times by huge waves, sweeping the crew members off their feet. Laurie helped free two men – Ian Drummond and Paul Sullivan – who were caught in their safety lines. “Not much was going through my mind at all,” Laurie said. “It was a mechanical response; I was just doing what I had been taught to do.” After 20 hours at sea, Port Stephens 40

returned to its berth. The five crew on board M3 survived, but sadly, there was another incident that day that claimed the life of sailor Mal Lennon, the skipper of Amante. Other rescues involving racing yachts Out of Sight and Gem were successful. Aside from Laurie, 20 rescue crew members and communications operations from the Port Stephens unit received commendations, last week, for their skill and bravery during those fateful 36 hours.

Its members participate in a variety of social activities, from high teas to movie days to buy, swap and sell stalls. “It’s a big job. It’s one that we’re not funded to do, but you do it because there’s a community need,” The Place Charlestown Community Centre manager Lynda Little said. Faye Wamsley has been a part
of the club for 30 years. She said The Place’s management of the club has taken off a lot of the pressure. “It would have been a shame to see it disbanded,” she said. “It means a lot to a lot of people.” The Place is calling on financial support from local businesses and community members to help run the club. A long-standing Charlestown community group has been saved at the eleventh hour. The Charlestown Square Tuesday Club was in jeopardy of folding, last August, when none of its members could take on the responsibility of managing the club’s finances and social activities. But The Place Charlestown Community Centre stepped in to provide the staff to help run the club. The group of about 60 ladies, ranging in age from 65 to 96, has been meeting in the Charlestown area for 34 years. It was established when Charlestown Square first opened. Centre management paid for the hire of the club’s meeting space, and still does to this day. Over the years, the club has called home various coffee shops,

“The show covers everything – from the original swing era, right through to a few modern hits, all with the Ultra Swing Lounge style, of course.” The show's principal stars – Daniel Stoddart, Steve Hudson and Rob McDougall – are certainly no strangers to the stage. Daniel is the head of Hunter Drama as well as being a seasoned performer in his own right; Steve is a regular fixture on the Newcastle music scene; while Rob joined the Australian cast of Les Miserables in 2013 in the role of Lesgles and the Bishop of Digine. He was also the understudy for the role of Javert. Adding an extra level of class to proceedings will be world champion ballroom dancers from Dancing With The Stars Aric Yegudkin and Masha Belash, fellow dance champions Daria

After five years out of the spotlight – Ultra Swing Lounge – arguably the most popular, Hunter-produced musical extravaganza ever – is returning, bigger and better, for two shows at the Civic Theatre this month. Like the title suggests, it’s a show where swing is king, and while it’s all about the sartorial elegance of Hollywood-era glamour, there are more than a few modern twists. “Ultra Swing Lounge was a concept that was developed around ten years ago,” producer and director Phil Collins told Newcastle Weekly. “It’s been about five years since it’s been on stage because the boys’ schedules became quite hectic but we’re back with a bang this year and, because they haven’t done it for five years, there’s an enormous amount of excitement.

NOTHING UP THEIR SLEEVES Any discussion about magic in this region would not be complete without mention of local trickster Joel Howlett. The affable magician has been tricking us since winning the Red Faces segment on Hey Hey It’s Saturday at age seven. Some 20 years later, Joel may be all grown up, but his passion for magic has not waned. He will be bringing his latest show I Want To Be Like You to the Lake Macquarie Performing Arts Centre this weekend and he told Newcastle Weekly that audiences should be bubbling with excitement. “This show is a variety show for families and will feature myself and a very special guest artist Allan Cullen,” he said. “Allan is originally from Sweden
and goes by the name of Bubble 07. He fills bubbles with different colours and vapours, makes fantastic bubble shapes and may even put someone in a bubble at one point.” Joel, who has won magic championships both here and in New Zealand, as well as performing at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas, added that his portion of the show would be full of classic sleight of hand. “This is a show that appeals to all ages – from seniors to little kids,” he said. “There’ll be lots of fun, a lot of laughs and some great magic.” Catch I Want To Be Like You at Lake Macquarie Performing Arts Centre (Lake Street, Warners Bay) on Saturday 18 February. Brewing up a storm
There’s no denying that, over the past 10 years or so and on the back of the craft beer phenomenon that has swept Australia, particularly in our region, people are becoming more and more interested in experimenting with their own flavours, concoctions and recipes at home. brewers and newcomers walk through the doors and he added that he was willing to impart all of his brewing wisdom to anyone who asked. “We’re seeing quite a different range of people come through since we opened – both ladies and men from 18 years old to 88, which is just fantastic.” For Jason, his passion for DIY brewing first began when a friend gifted him a home-brew beer starter hit and he said the rest was history. “It’s just so much fun,” he said. “The enjoyment you can get out of experimenting with different flavours and grains is just great and there’s an element of being a bit of a mad scientist in your backyard watching the yeast do its thing.” So, if you’re an experienced brewer looking to take your game to the next level, or a newcomer wishing to get more involved, call in and have a chat to Jason at The Brewers Market today.

t was for this reason that Jason Gaskell started The Brewers Market. Located on the Pacific Highway at Belmont, The Brewers Market first opened its doors at the end of last year and is seeing more and more people wanting to learn more about the exciting world of DIY brewing – however don’t go thinking it’s all just about beer either. “The Brewers Market is all about encouraging people to make their own beer, wine and spirits at home – it’s a bit of a DIY one-stop-shop,” Jason said. Apart from stocking everything you could possibly want to start on your own DIY beverage adventure, Jason added that the range goes way beyond just beer, wine and spirits. “We also stock a range of beef jerky making kits, sausage making kits, cheese making kits as well as barbecue smoking supplies,” he added. home trend alert: STYLING LIVING RENOVATING
STYLING
Carrington couple Sophie and Mitch Friend used grey grout and subway tiles in their recent kitchen renovations.
LIVING
RENOVATING
grey grout
According to our inside sources, black grout is sooo 2016. WITH HOME EDITOR, GEORGIA OSLAND
In 2017, the sure-fire way to make your tiles really stand out – be it in the kitchen or bathroom – is by using grey grout. You heard it here first, folks. The “subway look” – pairing white tiles with grey grout – is so hot right now. So much so, that Carrington couple Sophie and Mitch Friend, whose renovations we featured in
Home last September, chose this look when they renovated their kitchen in recent weeks (pictured). Newcastle Weekly loves! While one might spend hours poring over tile colours, shapes, sizes and textures, the Friends’ kitchen tiling really shows how grout can complete the overall look. It’s definitely worth careful consideration.
Both grey and black grout provide a lot of contrast, giving your interior space a modern, industrial look; defining the white tile without being too obtrusive. It’s also low maintenance, in comparison to white grout, which can get grubby easily. Grout serves a practical purpose, too. Not only does it fill the gaps
between tiles, it makes the wall, floor or countertop stronger by bonding the tiles together and preventing cracking and chipping. And you don’t have to renovate your entire kitchen or bathroom to give it a whole new look; replacing the grout between tiles with a new colour will transform the room before your very eyes.

the look more than skin-deep WITH FASHION & BEAUTY EDITOR, GEORGIA OSLAND
ut what’s even more surprising, is Sue Turner and Samantha Hodgins’ reasoning behind that end goal. “We know that, with a crown and title, people are more likely to pay attention to the causes we are so passionate about,” Samantha said. The 27-year-old, mum-of-two from Tarro met 54-year-old, mum-of-eight Sue, of Thornton, three years ago. Since then, the pair have supported one another in their charity work and simultaneous love of pageantry. Sue volunteers for Childs Vision Australia, which helps sick childrean across the country; and is passionate about protecting marine life. As someone who has suffered depression and
anxiety since she was a teen, Samantha works closely with the Black Dog Institute to raise the profile of mental illness in our community. Both Sue and Samantha also raise awareness of Taronga Zoo’s wildlife conservation programs, and collect shoes for Soles4Souls, which distributes pre-loved shoes to the less fortunate. Most pageant bodies require contestants to raise money for and volunteer with their chosen charities, but for Sue and Samantha, this is just an added bonus. That’s why, when they both qualified as national finalists for the Mrs and Ms Earth Pageant, to be held in Las Vegas, Nevada in June, they were over the moon.
Photo Peter Stoop
It’s a little-known fact that many beauty pageant contestants are required to do charity work in their quest to don the tiara.
The pair will travel to Melbourne on March 2 to compete in the national contest, at which they both must place first in their respective categories – Sue in the Mrs category and Samantha in the Ms – to qualify for the Las Vegas pageant. With a bit of experience under their sashes, they’re quietly confident. Sue finished runner-up in the Mrs Australasia contest in Sydney in 2015, while Samantha competed in the Ms Australia contest in Belmont last year, and placed first runner-up in Ms Elite Global United.

PICK OF THE WEEK No Country For Old Men Friday, SBS, 8.30pm, MA15+ (2007) Javier Bardem (Vicky Cristina Barcelona) is brilliant as the relentless killer who leaves no witnesses to his pursuit of down-to-earth Texan cowboy Josh Brolin and the stash of stolen cash he found in the desert. Also on the hunt for the dough is hired gun Woody Harrelson, while Tommy Lee Jones (above) is the world-weary sheriff left to pick up the pieces. A clever meditation on morality, this cracking yarn is also a supremely violent and unpredictable cat-and-mouse caper that recalls the wit of the Coen brother’s cult classic Fargo.
Friday
Saturday, NBN, 11.45pm, M (1997) A cheerfully incendiary swipe at US politics (Primary Colors fans will find this a hoot) starring Robert De Niro (left) as a spin doctor who steps up to the plate when the president – soon up for re-election – is caught napping after revelations of a below-the-belt incident involving a girl scout. With White House aide Anne Heche at his side, the two enlist Hollywood producer Dustin Hoffman to help create a media frenzy to detract from the sex scandal – what about a fake war against Albania?

A year of inner growth, self-awareness and self-discovery lies ahead for Drew. She will be contemplating her current relationship and how to change things, however she must be careful of jumping to conclusions, then she will enjoy herself without getting hurt. On the professional front, she may need to put her own ambitions on hold while she focuses on helping others, but mustn’t waste her time on those who don't deserve it.

CAPRICORN DEC 22 - JAN 20
You will be feeling as bright as a button; the only fly in the ointment could be a niggling worry about your finances. It’s essential that you retain control over your income and expenses. If you have let things slide recently, it's time to get on top of them again.
With both Venus and Mars in your area of ambition, this indicates you are needing to feel what you are doing is worthwhile. You may feel the urge to change your career or to demand more recognition for past efforts. Your prospects are considerably boosted from now on.
Parties, special events and dates will fill up your diary; as your mojo returns, you'll be up for a laugh. Singles will have a blast, while parents rediscover their inner child. If you and your lover have a great deal to talk over, this is the time to do it.
Mars in Aries indicates tension is building up in the family and although it doesn't directly involve you, your sensitivity won't allow you to shut yourself off from it. Your best bet is to keep your head down and steer clear of any confrontational or delicate matters.
TAURUS APR 21 - MAY 21
LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23
Venus in your 12th house indicates that a dutiful visit to in-laws or elderly relatives is on the cards. You might dread the prospect, but it’s not going to be half as bad as you may think. In fact, you could learn something to your advantage.
Happy, unified and harmonious times are ahead. These feel-good vibes aren't exclusive to your love life and will also influence bonds with loved ones. You'll firm up some friendships, cut losses with others. This would be a good time to travel overseas or to explore new neighbourhoods.
You will have a clever money making idea and whether this makes you a fortune or simply brings in a small but useful sum, it will be worthwhile. While money concerns might be groundless in the long run, for now you need to work out a sensible budget.
Fresh air is a magic elixir for you. Venus and Mars are stimulating your 11th house and brilliant inspirations will strike, ensuring something you thought was impossible will be made into a practical proposition. A work colleague or your spouse will be right behind you on this one.

VIRGO AUG 24 - SEP 23 It’s time to reassess if you’ve been eating on the run or overindulging. Try taking on a demanding new hobby or fun physical activities. Your physical relationships come into focus as Venus and Mars are in your passion and intimacy zone. This should be a sizzling time romantically!

SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 - DEC 21 You are going to find it difficult to sit still as your restlessness intensifies so rather than go stir crazy, start making plans – from day trips to fitness kicks or organising fundraisers. Singles, the dating pool will expand as you get more active and put yourself out there.
AQUARIUS JAN 21 - FEB 19 This is the ideal time to make a fresh start. The next 12 months is a good time to travel overseas, to explore new neighbourhoods or to take an interest in spiritual matters. If you are an academically minded person the planets ensure success in all educational matters.
PISCES FEB 20 - MAR 20 Pisceans need regular sanity breaks to process the emotional baggage they pick up. Scrapbooking and journal writing can work a treat. You seem to be getting some kind of grip on your finances; you might have allowed things to slip, spending too much on those credit or debit cards.
