This week From the editor I've so many reasons to be grateful this past week.

On Friday I was among the lucky few who attended the VIP preview of Newcastle Fashion Weekend, which proved to be a roaring success on Saturday, and of which Newcastle Weekly was a proud partner.

The event's success is certainly a credit to the organisers, but I like to think NW played a small part in that.

It was wonderful to see the work of so many Newcastle creatives showcased.

Then, on Saturday evening, I was honoured to be a part of one of my good friends' wedding celebrations.

It was an intimate, non-traditional affair, and perfect in every way; made even better by a last-minute decision to pamper myself at the hair salon beforehand.

And finally, on Sunday, I had my first proper sleep-in since I moved house – arguably the biggest magnet for gratitude after the busy weekend I had.

It's true: the best things in life are free.

news Urban leaders look to future lobal challenges and Newcastle’s revitalisation will be on the agenda when 50 of the world’s brightest urban leaders descend on the city next month.

The Vanguard Australia conference, which takes place from 6 to 10 November, will be the first held outside of North America.

Representatives from various backgrounds, including Fortune 500 companies, philanthropy, academia, the tech sector and all levels of government, will come together to discuss international issues, as well as those unique to Newcastle.

They will explore the city’s revitalisation through site tours at the former Newcastle railway station, post office, heavy rail corridor, and the new public domain.

Transport interchange opens It’s been hailed as the new gateway to the city centre.

The $200 million Newcastle Interchange at Wickham is now open for business, marking a significant milestone in the state government’s revitalisation project.

The interchange, located on Stewart Avenue, Newcastle West, between Hunter Street and Honeysuckle Drive, is the new start and finish point for all Newcastle and Central Coast services and Hunter Line services, meaning

Hamilton station is no longer the end of the line.

The Newcastle Transport 110 shuttle service will continue to run from Newcastle East to the interchange until the Newcastle Light Rail project’s completion in 2019.

Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, Andrew Constance, says the new interchange will improve connectivity between trains, light rail, buses, taxis, private vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians.

“The multi-modal interchange will be a new gateway for the city centre and will be the final stop for passengers travelling to Newcastle by train on the Central Coast and Newcastle line, as well as the Hunter line,” Mr Constance says.

“It will integrate seamlessly with the new bus interchange, which is proposed to be built on the site of the former Newcastle Cooperative Store building.”

However, the Rail, Tram and Bus Union has accused Mr Constance of

wasting millions of taxpayer dollars.

Union secretary Alex Claassens says the state government rushed through the initial closure of the rail line, inconvenienced commuters, and caused pain for local businesses and workers.

“How ridiculous to think that we’re actually expected to celebrate this monumental government stuffup,” Mr Claassens says.

“The amount of taxpayer money this government has wasted on this project is obscene.

“The fact that the minister is in town celebrating this complete disaster of a project is offensive to the people of Newcastle.”

The interchange was delivered as part of a broader project that includes the truncation of the former heavy rail line, new train stabling and turn-back facilities to the east of Hamilton station, signalling and track work, a new pedestrian footbridge at Railway Street, Wickham, and new staff facilities.

Lake Macquarie council is seeking feedback on a long-term parking management and transportation strategy for its nine town centres.

The draft strategy has been placed on public exhibition until 30 November.

Council’s manager integrated planning, Sharon Pope, says the strategy aims to maximise the use of existing parking spaces.

“People are more likely to visit our town centres if they know

they can get a parking space; footpaths are provided and wellmaintained; and there are regular bus services,” Ms Pope says.

The strategy was informed by community feedback and bestpractice research.

Members of the community made more than 1400 comments, providing useful insight into parking issues and highlighting improvements that could be made.

Some of the parking management tools the strategy proposes include: line marking of on-street parking spaces; time restrictions; increased walking and infrastructure; the use of smart parking technology; demandbased paid parking; and additional parking enforcement resources.

On a mission to help problem gamblers Newcastle residents are being urged to think about their gambling choices as part of Responsible Gambling Awareness Week.

Wesley Mission gambling counsellor Martina Magnery says the period between football grand fi nals and the Melbourne Cup is an ideal time for people to consider whether they need to make changes to their gambling behaviour.

“It can be hard to avoid media coverage and sports betting advertising around this time of year,” she says.

“However, regardless of whether you like betting on the occasional long shot, or always back favourites, Responsible Gambling Awareness Week is a great time to keep your limits in mind.”

Responsible Gambling Awareness Week runs from 23 to 29 October.

And, in a timely boost, Wesley Mission has also announced a new online support service for those who struggle with the tyranny of distance.

The service, which is available to residents who live in the Newcastle, Great Lakes and Port Stephens areas, uses web camera technology to reach people who have internet access but cannot, or fi nd it difficult to, travel to a

counselling session in Newcastle.

Mrs Magnery says the service is easily accessible and functional.

“In our experience, online counselling overcomes barriers that can prevent others from seeking support,” she says.

“People in the Great Lakes and Port Stephens areas have to drive up to one hour or more to attend a counselling session in Newcastle.

“Some people, who may have physical difficulties, can fi nd it hard to leave home.

“Other people who are struggling fi nancially cannot afford the cost of commuting.

Web counselling opens up a range of opportunities.”

About 250 clients are expected to embrace the new service over the next 12 months.

Regional towns’ job barriers Jobseekers are being hampered by a lack of public transport within the Paterson electorate, an Australian Jobs Taskforce has heard.

The taskforce visited Kurri Kurri and Raymond Terrace last week to speak with a range of participants, including employers, recruitment agencies, councils, secondary educators, union representatives, and concerned parents of unemployed children.

The hearings, which are taking place in high unemployment areas across the country, aim to provide opportunities and solutions that will help create jobs.

As of March 2017, Raymond Terrace’s unemployment rate was 7.8%, while Kurri Kurri’s reached 7.5%, compared to a then-national average of 5.9%.

Paterson MP Meryl Swanson said she was delighted to bring the

taskforce to her electorate.

“One of the strongest takeaways was that regional jobseekers face a tyranny of distance and a transport barrier,” she said.

“There is little, and infrequent, public transport in many parts of the Paterson electorate.

“Another concern is the erosion of TAFE and VET funding – this is compounded by the dearth of available apprenticeships and an education system that is geared to funnel students towards an HSC. “Apprenticeships have consequently picked up a second-class stigma that is not representative of the skills or capability required, nor the employment prospects they present.”

An expansion of Westfield Kotara is underway, with 30 new stores to open in late 2018.

Owner Scentre Group announced it will reintroduce a new Kmart, JB HiFi and Toys R Us, as well as two international fashion mini majors.

The expansion follows the 2015 opening of the Hunter Valley-inspired outdoor dining and entertainment precinct, The Rooftop, which included nine restaurants and an Event Cinemas complex.

Celebrations for centre’s re-opening A huge range of celebrations have been planned for the re-opening of Newcastle’s War Memorial Cultural Centre.

Now in its 60th year, the centre has undergone a major renovation, with a $1.3 million upgrade at the library set to thrust it into the digital age.

The library’s new additions include a makerspace, which aims to showcase the latest technologies; a space to read, research or escape the elements; and a children’s zone.

To celebrate the achievement, Newcastle council is hosting a three-day celebration from Thursday 26 October to Saturday 28 October.

There will be a chance to explore the library on the Friday from 10am to 2pm, with a street party to follow from 5pm to 8pm.

news Playground upgrades in Lake Macquarie

Hospital volunteers deservedly lauded Hard-working volunteers will be recognised for their vital contributions to Maitland Hospital.

The award-winning Maitland Hospital Volunteers group is set to celebrate excellence, with 12 deserving recipients to receive badges at its annual general meeting today (Thursday 19 October).

One of the members, Joy Miller, has been heavily involved for the past 15 years.

She says the dedicated group offers a wide range of expertise.

“When I moved [to Maitland] from Bega, I joined the hospital auxiliary and found out about [the volunteer group] from them,” she says.

“By having such a wide variety of volunteers, we’re able to cover many aspects of the volunteering.

“They all put in 100%, are very loyal to their job and, through that, have been able to make many lifelong friends.”

Some of the volunteers’ numerous roles include: general ward duties; assisting with administration; supporting staff meetings through quality, affordable catering; and providing care to patients.

This year alone, the group has helped provide a sensory garden, chairs and beds for two wards, and donated equipment such as PETs. The members who will be presented with badges for outstanding service are: Paul Adamson, Pamela Bowden, Colleen Brazier, Gail Holman, Julie March, Jenny Stuckling, Sue Swan, Shirley Fairhall, Sue Welsh, Joy Miller, Audrey Teat, and Margaret Beavis.

The group is also a recipient of the Volunteers of the Year – Group from Hunter New England Health 2017 award.

Lake Macquarie children will enjoy upgraded play spaces thanks to a $150,000 grant from the Department of Family and Child Services.

The council’s section manager community assets, Brendan Callander, said it was exciting to be able to develop playground facilities at Bolton Point Park, Bolton Point; Edwards Park, Booragul; and Luskin Way Park, Belmont North, to meet the needs of the growing community.

“Recreation areas and playgrounds are a central part of our community, providing places for children to play and for parents to meet and socialise with others,” Mr Callander said.

The council will also contribute $150,000 towards the three playgrounds, with works expected to be completed within the next 12 months.

Healthy Harold’s new ride A $77,000 grant has kept one of Hunter Life Education’s most-used trucks in the state on the move.

The Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation provided the funding to enable Hunter Life Education to replace its 12-year-old towing vehicle, which transports its mobile learning centres to regional schools throughout the Hunter and Central Coast regions.

As Australia’s largest not-forprofit provider of preventative health education, Hunter Life Education operates five mobile learning centres within the area.

Through powerful tools such as its mascot, Healthy Harold the giraffe, the organisation has been helping students make healthier choices since 1979.

news Program targets mental health A new youth mental health program launched today aims to equip young people with the resources and strategies to better deal with mental illness.

The Bright Minds Suicide Prevention project is a Community Activities Lake Macquarie initiative. It is designed to inform and educate young people to understand their mental health concerns, improve help-seeking, and deliver training to teachers and frontline professionals. Bright Minds will be delivered in schools throughout Lake Macquarie in 2018 and 2019 as an interactive, youth-driven workshop.

The launch is today, Thursday 19 October, from 4.30pm at Charlestown Square, with Circus Avalon performers, music, giveaways and more.

Report shows food insecurity A shocking 3.6 million Australians, or 15% of the population, have experienced uncertainty over where their next meal is coming from in the last 12 months.

The statistics were revealed in the latest Foodbank Australia Hunger Report. Locally, the report found that 169,413 kilograms of food was supplied to Newcastle in the past year, equating to 308,023 meals.

In addition, an extra 378,177 meals were needed per year to meet the growing demand, while half of those struggling with food insecurity had been employed.

The report found bill shock was the main cause of food insecurity.

And, now, two of the side’s most talented stars, Yasmin Skene and

Tayla Hull, will head off to compete at the Women’s World Floorball Championships in Slovakia in December.

improve upon her first appearance at the tournament back in 2015.

“I’m more confident on the court now with my position structure and knowing what I should be doing out there,” she says.

“I’ve had more coaches help me out and it’s just a matter of experience. I’m two years older now than I was then.”

When Skene first started playing, there wasn’t a Newcastle-based women’s team, so she’d travel to Woy Woy. While floorball in the Hunter Region has gone from strengthto-strength since then, many local stars still struggle to meet financial requirements.

“We’ve done a lot of work over the last three or four years to build up the women’s team, and we now have Australian men’s players

helping out with coaching,” Skene says.

“But, because floorball isn’t an Olympic sport, we don’t have any funding.

“It all has to come out of our own pocket and can cost up to $8,000 for flights, luggage and other expenses.

“So, if we do get sponsorship from anyone, it’ll help us immensely.”

Skene’s fellow national representative Hull also showcased her skills at the Northern Beaches Open over the October long weekend. Hull was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) as Newcastle took out the title.

The club, which consists of about 14 members ranging in age from 40 to 80, races in events from Canberra to Yamba, as well as the FINA World Masters Championships.

Despite their comparativelysmall stature, the Merlots have tasted plenty of success, winning last year’s NSW Division 2 masters swimming competition, consistently placing in the top 10 at state carnivals, and setting numerous personal bests.

Former Newcastle Jet Adam Taggart bagged a double against his old side to rescue a point for Perth Glory at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Perth stunned the 14,833-strong crowd when Taggart flicked home a cross to put the visitors in front in just the 8th minute.

But the Jets were soon back in the contest, with in-form striker Roy O’Donovan placing a diving header past Glory goalkeeper Liam Reddy.

Then, on the hour, Ben Kantarovski tapped home from close range after Nikolai ToporStanley’s header hit the post.

A gallant Glory outfit kept pushing for an equaliser and, deep into stoppage time, Taggart popped up with a well-placed header to make it 2-2.

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Place the rice and 2 cups of water

2. Preheat the oven to 200°C (180°C fan-forced). Spray a 30cm × 20cm × 7cm deep baking dish lightly with oil.

3. Mix the rice, chicken, peas, zucchini, eggs, dried mixed herbs and half the mozzarella together in a large bowl. Season to taste.

4. Transfer the rice mixture to the prepared dish, pressing down firmly. Sprinkle with the remaining mozzarella. Bake in the oven for 40 minutes or until cooked through and golden. Rest for 5 minutes in the dish, then slice and serve warm with salad greens.

Kernaghan’s back in town Not everyone likes country music, but it’s hard to dislike Lee Kernaghan.

He’s down to earth, easy to talk to, and he wears a cool hat. His black Akubra is part of his iconic image as a true-blue Aussie bloke.

“There’s something about a black hat that covers up a lot of mistakes,” Kernaghan laughs.

His music style is “country to the core”, but it wasn’t always that way.

“I grew up listening to everything on the radio – rock, country, you name it. I had to be able to play everything to get bookings at the local RSL”.

His own style of music reflects Australian values, the harshness of living in drought-affected areas, and the toughness of country folk battling to survive in the sometimesunforgiving Australian landscape.

The Golden Guitar winner and former Australian of the Year has

sold more than two million albums and his songs have topped the Australian Country Charts 33 times.

Twenty-five years after he released his renowned tune Boys from the Bush, Kernaghan’s back in town and he’s playing at the Civic Theatre next month as part of his national Boys from the Bush 25th Anniversary tour.

Newcastle holds a special place in his heart, with a memorable moment occurring at one of his shows here.

“I was playing at the Newcastle Workers Club in 1999, and was doing an encore,” Kernaghan reminisces.

“It was packed out and suddenly the crowd was going ballistic. I thought my fly was undone or something, but it was the host of This Is Your Life, Mike Munro, carrying the big red book with the gold writing on the front.

“He gets up on stage and says:

It’s been described as an “encyclopaedic repertoire of people, dogs, fruit, flowers, fish and many surreal hybrids”.

Susan Ryman’s latest body of work, Strange, certainly lives up to its name.

As aesthetically pleasing as it is intriguing, Strange is a series of drawings that have been produced using a range of traditional tools and techniques favoured by natural history illustrators.

The result: a product of close observation, technical skill and a rampant imagination.

Born in Marrickville in Sydney’s inner-west, Ryman studied at the National Art School and Alexander Mackie College.

Her works are held in the collections of Maitland City Art Gallery, Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery, Cessnock council, and the Hunter Medical Research Institute, to name a few.

Now, Strange is the newest exhibition to adorn the walls of the highly-distinguished Art Systems Wickham.

priced artworks, Art Systems Wickham aims to promote the diverse artforms of leading artists, upon which director Colin Lawson prides himself.

For artists, the gallery is open to successful applicants, and the director assists in all aspects of solo and group exhibitions. Strange is on display from Friday 20 October to Sunday 29 October.

Where the spirit of Christmas is forever One day in 2009, Sandy Diamante left home to shop at Mayfield’s Forever Christmas under strict instructions from her husband, Paul, not to break the bank.

Complacency killed the lawn Although I have already covered this topic, grass is a major point of discussion amongst gardeners at the moment.

“What do I do with my dying lawn; yellowing and full of weeds?” was asked constantly last weekend.

Normally, watering grass isn’t essential during winter, but this winter we’ve had very little rain since at least the end of June.

Contributing to the problem have been the prolonged westerly winds.

Lawns needed a good soaking every three days to maintain existing growth, even though the grass wasn’t growing.

This kind of neglect added to the dry conditions, and hence the black beetle and crickets are having a ball, eating roots and digging mounds.

So far, there is no evidence of army

grub – they will come, no doubt, a great deal earlier than late summer as they also hatch under dry conditions.

What to do? Firstly, what little rain we had last weekend might green up the lawn, but it should now be obvious that a deep watering every three days will encourage root growth.

Weeds should be eliminated at once; why water them and encourage their growth?

Avoid mowing at least one week before applying a selective weed killer. Use it on dry grass, earlier in the morning, so the sun has at least six hours do its job. These sprays are hormonal and the sun helps in the process. Allow one to two weeks for the weeds to die, then mow.

The next step is to fertilise and top-dress, which should be done lightly so as not to smother growth.

Then begin watering regularly.

Don’t rely on the rain at this point in time.

If you are noticing pests or dying off in a particular area, apply an all-purpose pesticide.

Granular products will eliminate all lawn pests. You should use a different product each year to prevent the pests becoming immune.

This week • Plant out sweet potatoes that have finally been grown as plants by Oasis. No more sticking a potato in a glass of water!

• Shock horror – there’s only nine weeks until Christmas. Time to prepare garden beds and pots to have a colourful show of annuals.

Dig in cow manure to gardens and leave a week before planting. Add new potting mix to containers, mixing in a slow-release fertiliser.

• Trim grevilleas when they finish flowering and fertilise with blood and bone.

VEUVE CLICQUOT CHAMPAGNE A great friend introduced me to these French bubbles on my 30th birthday and they’ve been my go-to celebration beverage ever since. Madame Clicquot is such an inspiration. I was lucky enough to visit the champagne house last year.

PARIS My mum likes to say I was born to go to Paris, but I didn’t manage to get there until last year. Whilst the sites are incredible – the Eiffel Tower, Rodin Museum, Musee D’orsay – it was the streets of Paris that captured my imagination. As Audrey Hepburn said: Paris is always a good idea!

Primarily focused on the Hunter, Central Coast and Taree regions, it helps women and children seek refuge, while also assisting victims on their journey to gain the confidence and skills to be happy, obtain employment, and thrive. Apart from this commitment, Belinda is also an experienced business professional, with a 20-year career in the insurance, construction, education, and not-for-profit sectors. Belinda currently serves as the chief executive officer of specialist insurance and technical training company, Rapid Solutions.

I’ve always been a bookworm; I love the power of a great book to change your heart and mind. I recently finished Everybody Matters by Bob Chapman (and I’m going to read it again before the year is out). A great friend and mentor of mine recommended it to me and it’s 100% shaping how I lead my team at Rapid Solutions.

CHAI TEA This spicy little beverage, brewed on soy, is my daily breakfast staple.

I know it’s not actually a meal, but I can go most the day on one or two cups. As I write I’m picking one up from Apothecary Kitchen (another of my favourite places – love what Ben does with fresh produce!) on the way to work.

MY TRIBE My kids keep me on my game, my four parents and two brothers keep me real, my squad of gal pals are my rocks and my partner is the yin to my yang. Together with my tribe, I feel I can do and be everything I hope for.
