This week... From the editor How often do we take the time to check in with one another? And I mean really check in? It's all too easy, when someone asks 'how are you', to reply with 'good'; and it's just as easy to take that answer at face value. International Women's Day last Thursday (8 March) got me thinking how women (and men alike) treat each other. With the advent of social media, we're more connected, and yet, somehow less connected than ever before. If you scratch beneath the perfectly-curated feeds, more often than not you'll find everyone is dealing with something on some level, but you'd never know unless you asked. It's easy to assume everyone is living their best lives from the pictures they post and statuses they write, and even feel a little envious. It's an unfortunate by-product of the digital age. But we're better than that. We're stronger than that. Instead of making assumptions, pick up the phone for once. Visit a friend in person. It'll do you both the world of good. As someone who enjoyed a longdistance (and long overdue) chat with her best friend in Port Macquarie via FaceTime last week, I can attest to that. Be kind to everyone (it doesn't cost a cent!). And tread lightly.

Action stations to help victims of violence

A streamlined action plan for removing domestic and family violence victims from harm’s way rolls out in Lake Macquarie next week. Lake Macquarie Police District will become a Safer Pathway site with the first Safety Action Meeting on Wednesday 21 March at the district’s headquarters at Belmont Police Station. Safer Pathway is a single contact point for victims of violence, with police at the front line. When approached or called to a domestic violence-related incident, police use a safety assessment tool to determine whether a victim’s health and safety is at immediate risk. If it is, the case is referred to fortnightly Safety Action Meetings Lake Macquarie Police District chief, between police and decision-makers Superintendent Daniel Sullivan, at from other government and nonthe district’s headquarters at Belmont Police Station. government agencies, such as NSW 1802_CG_NW_HALF_01.qxp_Newcastle Weekly 26/02/2018 6:00 PM Page 1

Health and Family and Community Services, who decide the best way forward. A victim’s immediate needs could be anything from medical attention to accommodation. One of Safer Pathway’s point of differences is the way information is shared between organisations, so victims do not have to tell and re-tell their stories. The program has already been introduced at several police districts and local area commands across the state, including in Newcastle. Lake Macquarie Police District chief, Superintendent Daniel Sullivan, told Newcastle Weekly that, as a White Ribbon ambassador, he was passionate about addressing violence, and welcomed the program. “Here we are, in 2018, yet men and women are treated very

differently in the community justice system,” he said. “If a man is assaulted by a stranger while leaving a pub, all the focus is on the offender. Who was he? Was he drunk? There is no focus on the victim. “If a woman is assaulted, we question her and what she was wearing. We, as a society, put our energy into questioning the victim. “Women shouldn’t face questions like, ‘why haven’t you left him yet?’; we should be asking, instead, ‘why do [perpetrators] hit?’” The state government has committed more than $53 million to Safer Pathway over four years, with 43 Safety Action Meeting sites in operation across the state by the month’s end. news Airport’s date with carriers Newcastle Airport will push to add more flight destinations to its growing list at a “speed dating-type” forum this weekend. Airport representatives will promote the Hunter Region during Routes Asia 2018 in Brisbane. The three-day forum is the only route development event dedicated to the Asia Pacific. It attracts about 800 delegates and involves more than 2,000 face-to-face meetings to discuss new and existing air services. Chief executive officer, Peter Cock, says Newcastle Airport, which unveiled an international terminal last August, is working together to “get the best for everyone”. “Routes Asia is where airlines and airports come together – it’s a speed dating-type concept; we

meet for about half an hour, then the bell rings, and we move onto another [airline],” he says. “We have a leading delegation up there [in Brisbane] and we’ve got a Gateway to the Hunter booth set up. “It’ll be the region going there, not just Newcastle. “As the saying goes: grow the pie, don’t fight over the pie.” From 22 March, Newcastle Airport will offer direct flights between Newcastle and Adelaide for the first time. But Dr Cock says attracting other destinations is a difficult process. “You can pitch a new route, like Adelaide, and sometimes you get excited and think it is close, then they don’t call back,” he says. “A lot of other airports have

Hobart, for example, doesn’t have international flights [yet]. “We don’t want the community to lose faith, so that’s why we don’t overpromise – it relies on the other party. “But we’re trying as hard as we can and, the more people who use [the airport], the more chance we

news Schools take digital lead It’s not humans versus machines, but rather a case of joining forces. Swansea High School will use a $41,000 federal government grant to develop technology courses and improve teacher knowledge in the area. The educational overhaul is set to include a compulsory class for Year 8 students, which covers ethics, coding, virtual reality learning, technology hardware, rocketry, and a creative playground called Minecraft. It will also involve the explicit teaching of technology in all key learning areas in Year 7, a technology elective in Years 9 and 10, and increased teacher skill in all Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects. Principal Robyn Leggatt says the digital literacy grant provides a “huge step” towards the school’s educational goals. “We’re really focusing on moving towards the skills required in a global society,” she says. “Anything we need to know, we can Google in a matter of seconds, so what skills can we learn to keep us in front of a machine? “We need to know how technology works so we can utilise what humans are best at doing and machines aren’t. “That’s why we wanted to put the program in our school – to enhance the human element of how we use technology.” Lake Macquarie High School also received a $50,000 grant to boost its Emerging Technology and STEM Equity project under round two of the federal government’s funding program.

Park honours RAAF heroes

Korean War veteran Ronald Guthrie watches a vintage 1942 Wirraway plane, one of only four left in the world, fly over during the opening of a new park in Thornton.

An aviation-themed park that pays tribute to Australian fighter pilots has officially opened at Wirraway in Thornton. The $1.6 million facility features a plaque, inscribed with the names of 19 men from the Royal Australian Air Force, as well as a fitness station, half-sized basketball court, and a flying fox. One of the men listed on the plaque, Ronald David Guthrie, was a special guest at the opening. Mr Guthrie, a Korean War veteran and US Air Medal recipient, served as a tail-end Charlie, or rear gunner in a bomber. He flew 14 combat sorties prior to his last on 29 August 1951. On that day, Mr Guthrie was flying over North Korea when he was shot down and forced to eject at 38,000 feet – the fastest and highest bailout successfully attempted at the time. His descent took about 30 minutes and, after being captured by North Korean troops, he was made a prisoner of war for the next two years. Mr Guthrie opened the park alongside

Maitland mayor Loretta Baker and Deputy Senior Air Force Officer, Group Captain Peter Cluff. Apart from the plaque, the streets of Wirraway also honour RAAF heroes. As one of the Lower Hunter’s newest communities, it will eventually be home to more than 500 families. Cr Baker stressed the importance of appropriate infrastructure to sustain a growing population. “Public places like Wirraway Park are great spaces for health and well-being, and strengthen the connections between people,” she says. Meanwhile, a community fitness initiative, Live Life Get Active, kicked off at the park last week. Australian Olympian Jane Flemming officially launched the free outdoor program, which includes a range of activities such as boxing and yoga. Live Life Get Active takes place at 9.30am each weekday. Wirraway is being developed by Defence Housing Australia.

Light rail construction continues in the city centre Parts of Hunter and Scott streets remain closed to traffic as light rail is built. There’s still plenty of ways to get in and around the city while temporary traffic diversions are in place. Honeysuckle Drive, Wharf Road and King Street are open, and public transport, cycling or walking are great choices. The city centre is still open for business with pedestrian access maintained. Please allow extra travel time and plan your journey.

news Development debate reignites A drawn-out feud over a contentious housing development at Whitebridge has reignited. Developer SNL Building Constructions is seeking a review of a 2015 decision by the Joint Regional Planning Panel to reduce the size of its Dudley Road proposal. The panel had approved the $23 million development application with a few adjustments, including removing two, top-floor apartments to reduce one of the buildings from four storeys to three – reducing the overall number of units (both residential and mixed-use) from 91 to 89. The application was referred to the panel by Lake Macquarie council after a groundswell of opposition from the community, which saw petitions and submissions lodged with the council. The development’s size, character, and traffic impacts were among the

biggest concerns residents flagged. The panel took this into consideration when it finally gave the project the green light at the end of 2015. Construction of Fettlers Whitebridge has since started. However, the council’s online development application tracker reveals SNL re-applied to the council in late January to have the additional two units reinstated. “The additional storey will be an extension of the high-quality build form approved for the site,” the renewed application reads. “It is appropriately sited, having regard to topography, zoning, and the existing development. “It will reinforce the urban centre, provide a visual reference point for the surrounding area, and improves the sense of street enclosure for the urban centre.” Charlestown state MP Jodie

Harrison, who presided as mayor of Lake Macquarie at the time the initial development proposal was lodged, said the move was a direct attempt to overturn the panel’s original decision. She said it was an issue that had caused “an incredible amount of community angst for over two years, and which the community thought had been put to bed”. Ms Harrison gave notice of the matter in parliament last week, calling

NTL

on the government to remove the loophole that allowed the developer to reapply to the council. “This approval was given contrary to the views and submissions of the democratically-elected council, and certainly contrary to the wishes and submissions of the community,” she said. “How SNL can do this, legally and morally, outrages and confounds me.” - Georgia Osland

A petition that urged the state government to buy back prime koala habitat it previously sold off has been debated in parliament. The petition was tabled last week after members of the Mambo-Wanda Wetlands Conservation Group and Labor MP Kate Washington gathered almost 14,000 signatures in a bid to protect the wetlands. However, the conservation group left parliament disappointed, claiming the government bragged about raising $60 billion through sell-offs across the state, while deferring the matter into the hands of its planning department. In 2016, the government sold the Mambo Wetlands for $250,000 in an online auction. A development application to build a single-storey dual-occupancy home within the prime koala habitat was knocked back last year. However, a second application is being examined by Port Stephens Council.

Loan secured for solar farm A $6.5 million loan has been secured to help build a solar farm at the Summerhill Waste Management Centre in Wallsend. The five-megawatt installation is expected to significantly reduce Newcastle council’s annual $4 million electricity bill, which doubled in the past two years. The solar facility will reportedly save the city about $9 million over its 30-year lifespan, once construction and operational costs are factored in. Construction is expected to begin in June. The loan was provided by the Clean Energy Finance Corporation.

Stockland Green Hills will launch the fourth stage of its $414 million redevelopment next week. The East Maitland shopping complex is set to open more than 70 new stores, including David Jones, Timezone, JB Hi-Fi and Harris Scarfe, as well as a new restaurant precinct, on 22 March. Centre manager Chris Travers praised the community’s support throughout the project. “This is the last big retail stage in regards to launches,” he says. “Everyone has been really supportive and people seem very keen that there’s a bit less travel with not going to Newcastle all the time to do their shopping. “Plus, there’s the extra offer with fashion, food and entertainment that they haven’t had [before].” In November, a record 100,000 shoppers flocked to the centre in the three days following its stage three opening, which included the likes of Lorna Jane, Target and The Body Shop, as well as a 500-seat food court. Following the stage four unveiling, a new international retailer will then be added in May before a seven-screen, 900-seat HOYTS cinema opens up in early June. The cinema will be the final stage, and is set to include the opening of 3,100 car parking spaces. The centre’s redevelopment aims to generate more than 1,250 direct full-time jobs in retail, customer service, and hospitality.

Newcastle’s iconic Queens Wharf Tower has attracted interest from farflung parties. Newcastle council announced late last year it would demolish the 40-metre high structure to save around $1.6 million in maintenance costs over the next few years. However, several interested parties, including one from Western Australia, have since enquired about the tower, prompting an expression of interest process. “Given this interest, it’s only fair that we run an EOI process and, if we find someone who’ll give the tower a good home, then we’ll be happy to support its resurrection,” Newcastle lord mayor, Nuatali Nelmes, said.

Funds for Belmont Baths Lake Macquarie council has received a grant of more than $430,000 for the Belmont Baths upgrade. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald, announced the funding on Monday as part of the state government’s $200 million stronger country communities program. The Belmont Baths project will include a new jetty and a protected swimming enclosure to replace the finger jetty destroyed in the 2015 super storm. The facility is set to incorporate protective mesh on all three sides, while the existing amenities block will be demolished and replaced. “I am very pleased the baths will be rebuilt,” Mr MacDonald says. “I received very strong representations from the community, who clearly want them restored and loved once again by locals and visitors. “I congratulate Robin Gordon and the Belmont and District Residents’ Action Group for their advocacy.” The tender is expected to go out in early April for the baths and amenities block. Construction is scheduled for July-October this year.

Knights start season in style Newcastle will head to the nation’s capital in a buoyant mood after last Friday’s thrilling 19-18 golden-point win over Manly. The round-one clash was eventually decided by the boot of star signing Mitchell Pearce, who slotted the winning field goal in the 88th minute to send the

23,000-strong crowd at McDonald Jones Stadium into raptures. The Knights led early when young gun Kalyn Ponga dived over in just the fourth minute. A try to hooker Slade Griffin later on put Newcastle ahead 12-6, but Manly hit back again through Shaun Lane to level it up at the

break. Sea Eagles centre Brian Kelly then handed the visitors their first lead, 16-12, before Newcastle’s Lachlan Fitzgibbon drove across the line on the hour mark. The Knights were up by two points with three minutes left on the clock when referee Adam Gee awarded Manly a penalty. Halfback Daly Cherry-Evans opted to kick for goal, and nailed his attempt from 35-metres out to send the game into extra-time. His opposite number, Pearce, then seized the moment, banging over a field goal from right in front. Newcastle’s next opponents, Canberra, held an 18-point lead against the Gold Coast Titans in their round-one clash, but were run down to lose 30-28. The Knights face the Raiders this Sunday 18 March. Kick-off is at 6.30pm.

The Newcastle Jets are set to welcome back two key recruits for this weekend’s clash with Wellington Phoenix. Despite the absence of attacker Andrew Nabbout, who has signed for J-League heavyweights Urawa Red Diamonds, the Jets will be boosted by the return of Ronny Vargas and Pato Rodriguez. Vargas spent four months on the sidelines after breaking his ankle against the Brisbane Roar back in round three, while Rodriguez was expected to be out for at least a month when he suffered a calf strain in the Jets’ 2-all draw with Western Sydney. The Jets, however, are also without Roy O’Donovan, who is serving the first of a two-week suspension. This Saturday’s clash starts at 5.35pm.

ith the addition of two brand-new wards, Lakeside Clinic now provides 78, fully private, hotel-style bedrooms, each with their own en-suite. Some rooms have a view of Lake Macquarie. “Patients really appreciate modern, comfortable rooms at a time when they’re feeling vulnerable,” Business Development Manager, Mark Harrison, says. A new kitchen has been built, catering to all three of the clinic’s wards, as well as indoor and outdoor dining areas. There are new mental health day program facilities, plus additional psychiatrists, allied health professionals and nursing staff to care for Lakeside

Clinic’s patients. The $20 million development came in response to the community’s growing mental health needs. As Newcastle’s largest private mental health facility, Lakeside Clinic is one of only a few in the area that offers Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or TMS, to treat severe depression. The treatment involves placing a device, similar to a set of headphones, on the patient, and using a magnetic field and small electrical currents to alter the brain’s function. While TMS is not for everyone, treatment is guided by a psychiatrist, with the aim being to improve a patient’s mood. Lakeside Clinic is now accepting patient admissions via its Easy Admission service. Phone 1300 656 604.

Life Rebel Chiropractic advertising moment

Dr Josh McNamara at Life Rebel Chiropractic’s East Maitland studio.

Chiropractic health with a difference Truth, passion, purpose. These are the core ideals that Life Rebel Chiropractic is built upon.

L

ife Rebel Chiropractic believes excellence in chiropractic healthcare is not about treating dysfunction or ill health, but rather elevating daily health, so that the body can look after itself naturally. When Dr Dan Shakespeare opened Life Rebel Chiropractic at East Maitland, it gave the surrounding communities the opportunity to experience and learn the importance of chiropractic care, in an environment conducive to vitality and health. One year on, and the response from the community has been overwhelming, to the point where Life Rebel Chiropractic has increased its space to welcome the addition of a second chiropractor to the office, Dr Josh McNamara. It wasn’t just the core ideals that led Dr Josh to choose Life Rebel Chiropractic, but the way Life Rebel empowers people to take charge of their life. Coupled with the implementation of traditional chiropractices and cutting-edge technology, Dr Josh was attracted to the identification of the root cause of a person’s

disorder, not purely addressing the site of pain, which has seen so many treatment approaches fail people in the past. “Pain is the alarm bell, but not necessarily the underlying issue,” he said. “We improve the integrity of the spine and allow the persons innate healing fire to take over and address other areas of dysfunction or disease.” A MyoVision exam – a surface electromyography, or sEMG, which measures muscle tension – is done using a cutting-edge machine designed by a NASA scientist. “This is a key tool used by Life Rebel to properly identify areas of dysfunction within the spine,” Dr Josh explains. “It allows specific analysis and correct identification of problem areas. “It is tools like these that separate Life Rebel Chiropractic from other approaches,” Dr Josh explains – another key reason he decided call Life Rebel home. The studio itself, created with recycled and sustainable materials, is designed to create a

feeling of ambience to further inspire health. “People immediately feel the different approach to healthcare as soon as they walk in. “It’s refreshing to those who have been stuck in a model not congruent with their own beliefs on healthcare.” To celebrate the addition of Dr Josh, Life Rebel Chiropractic is offering free initial consults to allow readers the opportunity to gauge another perspective, and start a new chapter in their health.

Budding artists all over the country have put pens to paper to showcase their skills in the upcoming Young Archie competition. While some children focused their drawings on family members, friends, or even self-portraits, the students of Mayfield West After School Care found inspiration in a more unusual avenue – the residents of Charles O’Neill Hostel in Mayfield West. Students visited residents at the Mental Health Aged Care Partnership Initiative (MHACPI) Transition Unit, which supports older people experiencing serious, enduring mental illness, and helps them to re-establish their lives in the community.

The students sat with their chosen models for a brief time to learn about their lives, before they started sketching. Rather than focusing on present aesthetics, the students gained inspiration from the residents’ former lives and “drew them as they saw them”. Some of the pictures featured the residents as their younger selves, such as long-term resident Rosalind, who was sketched as a teacher – her profession in her younger years. Charles O’Neill residential aged care manager Miriam Mutasa said the residents enjoyed the process “just as much” as the children. “I think that all of the residents really enjoyed the one-on-one attention from the children,”

Charles O’Neill Hostel resident Frank with Ruby from Mayfield West After School Care.

she said. “We would love to develop a combined intergenerational art program in the long-term, now that we’ve seen how successful it can be.” Students submitted their drawings to Art Gallery NSW for consideration for the art competition. It’s been described as a “slightlydrunk TED Talk”. In his latest show, Alternative Prime Minister, comedian Mark Swivel hits the hustings to kiss babies and sizzle sausages, all in a tasteful Hugo Boss suit and a hi-vis jacket – the standard PM uniform. “In a nutshell: this is political satire for those who like to drag our beautiful nation kicking and screaming from the mire,” Swivel told Newcastle Weekly. Expect banter, singing and fiscal responsibility: fully costed sillybuggers that strays dangerously close to common sense. Does Swivel have what it takes to be PM? Join his cabinet and help him create a Ten Point Plan for a Country Worth Living In, using nothing but a hula hoop, Venn diagram and barbecue tongs. What could go wrong? This absurd, timely and oddly-inspiring show includes a sausage sizzle, chook raffle, alternative national anthem and an acknowledgment of country to remember. Touring the length of the east

Six female artists have combined to showcase their skills at Art Systems Wickham’s latest exhibition. The exhibition, which starts at 6pm on Friday 16 March, presents the artists’ work under the name The Circle. The show title symbolises the creative enjoyment that comes from putting their very different creations together to experience the way their artworks flow from one to another. The Circle consists of artists Judy Hill, Debra Ansell, Dorothy Compton, Clare Felton, Maryanne Ireland and Jacquie Immens-McCoy, who met as a group several years ago. Now, they have moved on to regularly exhibit together.

Easter long weekend DIY Relish those bonus days off over the Easter long weekend (Friday 30 March to Monday 2 April) and use them to tackle DIY projects around the home.

Trusty rust removal

YOUR ONE STOP DOG FENCING SHOP

If you’ve spotted rust on your home’s gutters or garage doors, it requires immediate attention before it reaches a point beyond repair, which can be a time-consuming and costly process. Here are four simple steps for best results: 1. Remove any loose or flaking rust from surface with a wire brush. 2. Wash with water or a mild detergent to remove any remaining dust, grease and dirt. 3. Rinse and leave to dry. 4. Apply a protective metal paint, such as Hammerite’s Direct to Rust Metal Paint (see your local paint store), with a good-quality brush. 5. Reapply when first coat is dry.

Protect your deck

Paint preparation For interior paint projects, most surfaces will need to be sanded down first. Even if that’s all you accomplish over Easter, at the very least you’ll be prepared when the time comes to pick up a paint brush. The Mirka Professional Dust-Free Sanding Kit (mirkaaustralia.com.au) is a great tool for any DIY-er to sand discolouration, scratches or blemishes. No time is wasted covering furniture or cleaning up dust.

As we transition to the cooler months, it’s important to inspect timber surfaces for cracks or rotting sections. Without proper protection from cold temperatures and rain, timber can easily deteriorate, costing time and money in the long run. Look for a microporous protectant, such as Skikkens Cetol BLX-Pro (stockists: Bunnings Kotara, Wallsend, Belmont), which allows timber to breathe while repelling unwanted moisture.

PICK OF THE WEEK Peter Pan Friday, GO!, 7.40pm, PG (2003) Australian directormade-good P.J. Hogan (Muriel’s Wedding) tackles J.M. Barrie’s immortal Neverland tale with this faithful, eye-popping adaptation of the literary masterwork, re-invigorating the famed story of the boy who never grew up (Jeremy Sumpter, pictured). His repeated run-ins with the sea dog Hook (Jason Isaacs) and his otherworldly adventures with the Darling kids feel like an illustrated storybook come to life.

Friday

Juno

Animal Kingdom Saturday, SBS VLND, 11.20pm, MA15+ (2010) Writer/director David Michod’s ferocious debut feature is a near-flawless tale of Josh (James Frecheville), a Melbourne teenager torn between loyalty to his criminal family and leading life on the straight and narrow. Under the influence of his dodgy uncles and manipulative grandmother, Josh’s moral dilemma is compounded when he comes to the attention of a cop (Guy Pearce, pictured) who believes the conflicted youngster needn’t travel the same path of violence that his relatives have.

Monday, SBS VLND, 8.30pm, M (2007) The trend of pregnancy-themed comedies (Knocked Up, Waitress) continued with this smart-mouthed bundle of cinematic joy from director Jason Reitman (Up in the Air). When 16-year-old Juno McGuff (Ellen Page, Whip It, pictured) enlists her best friend Paulie (Arrested Development’s Michael Cera) to become her first sexual partner, little does she consider the outcome. Pregnant, Juno decides to offer the baby up for adoption – the prospective parents are the Lorings, wonderfully portrayed by Jennifer Garner and Cera’s Arrested dad Jason Bateman.

FAMILY LAW PROBLEM? Want freedom from ongoing conflict? Consider Collaborative Law If your matter is suitable we can contract with you and your ‘ex’ and their solicitor not to go to Court. Instead we take a collaborative apporoach with the other side which is aimed at problem solving in a series of meetings. The meetings are aimed at achieving a negotiated outcome based on your needs. Your needs take priority.

NW0958

Both sides’ lawyers are committed to helping you to achieve an out of Court settlement without conflict, being a transition to a new phase of your life. Mel Zambelis and Christine Iwaszkiewicz

The collaborative law model offers a fixed price to resolution at a fraction of

149A Adelaide Street Raymond Terrace | Ph: 4987 3844

the average cost to litigate a contentious matter. Christine says “ in my experience handling hundreds of Family Law matters, a Collaborative approach causes the least trauma for people and has achieved the most happy outcomes. But it is not a ‘one size fits all’. At CMI Law Firm we adopt the best model for your situation whether that be collaborative law, mediation, negotiation or litigation. The alternatives are discussed at your initial consultation which costs only $82.50 upon mentioning this ad”.

INTRODUCING JOEY

URGENT

58

Joey is a ten year old pug x that is looking for his forever home. Although Joey loves a walk he also enjoys the quiet life and you will often find him snoozing on the couch. Joey is good with kids and just loves to hang out with the family. However, He would suit someone who is either retired or someone who works part time. Being a Pug x, Joey has a funny personality but can also be a bit stubborn. He will sit for a food reward but otherwise will do as he pleases. Being ten years old, Joey certainly prefers the quiet life and loves lounging around the house.

Lily will have extra charisma about her during the year ahead. She will feel an inclination to be drawn to those who are considerably younger than herself. On the career front, it will be relatively easy for her to demonstrate her expertise to others, as people will certainly sit up and take notice. Lily will find that her confidence improves and she should be able to get exactly what she wants. Getting a good night’s rest could be a problem as her mind will be positively buzzing with ideas.

ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT

CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN

The New Moon on the 17th falls directly in your 12th house and indicates that there is an important spiritual side to your nature that needs nurturing. Allow yourself some ‘me time’ to either read a book you’ve admired or enjoy a musical experience that holds special appeal.

The New Moon on the 17th is the ideal time to get in contact with friends or family who live at a distance or to arrange a holiday. You’ve created good momentum on the career front, so now you can ease off the accelerator a little and let yourself cruise.

The New Moon on the 17th indicates that even though you are not known for your overly serious approach to your working life, you will nevertheless manage to bring off a remarkable achievement. Your natural flair with people will serve you well.

The New Moon on the 17th indicates great satisfaction in your relationships both at home and at work. Money issues surround you and you’ll have to untangle the mess sooner rather than later. A difficult decision you made a while ago will now be seen to have been correct.

TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY

LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG

The New Moon on the 17th brings the clarity you’ve been seeking regarding certain friendships. There could also be a work-related social event with potential for financial gain, so get networking. Someone who can influence your career will be watching, so try to make a good impression.

The New Moon on the 17th is a good day to raise sensitive issues with a superior. Extra work will pile up as the month progresses, but you can handle it extremely well if you use your pent-up energy wisely. Give careful consideration to a partnership investment.

The New Moon on the 17th indicates that a time for fun is on the cards and something you thought was lost is found again, whether an investment you’d given up on or an opportunity reborn in a new guise. Either way the effects on your financial prospects are encouraging.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE

The New Moon on the 17th indicates that a surprise turn of events romantically will keep you guessing. This is the ideal time for intimacy, so why not plan a romantic outing? Singles, take time out to visit a new venue; you might be surprised who you connect with.

The New Moon on the 17th and Mars in your 7th house combine to put you in a romantic frame of mind. If you are footloose and fancy free you could have a lot of fun looking. It is the ideal time to join a new online dating site.

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT

SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC Your quick mind and sympathetic approach makes you well suited to assisting others who need help. The New Moon on the 17th indicates to keep your focus on the home if you feel like splurging. An investment in making your immediate surroundings more attractive will bring great satisfaction.

AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB The New Moon on the 17th indicates that you need to trust your creative gifts where your career is concerned as they are working in your favour. A new work colleague will have a beneficial influence on your productivity. You’re amazingly effective when you need to be.

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR The New Moon on the 17th indicates that an important relationship is undergoing a change for the better. The inner truth of things is always more important to you than mere outward show. A big decision has been pending for some time and this has clear implications for your earning power.

Get real with property read

Find your Mojo this Easter

People invest in property for many different reasons; whether to leave a nest egg for their kids, retire early, or travel. Discovering your ‘why’ is key to achieving long-term success. Since establishing The Property Mentors four years ago after their own property investment success, Let’s Get Real authors Luke Harris and Matthew Bateman have helped thousands of Australians get on the road to achieving their financial freedom. In this no-nonsense book, the pair provide an easy-to-follow, jargon-free guide to successful property investment. Visit thepropertymentors.com.au

No one misses out on Easter at Mojo Health. Mojo Health at Charlestown Square stocks vegan, dairy and gluten-free Easter eggs, refined sugar and caffeine-free eggs, certified organic eggs and bunnies as well as gluten-free hot cross buns. If you think you have a food intolerance, the Mojo Health team can help you arrange testing. Intolerances to certain foods such as dairy, gluten, eggs and nuts can inflame your digestive system. No matter what your food intolerances or allergies are, it’s time to start enjoying Easter again at Mojo Health.

My favourite things BARBECUE I will never say no to a good slab of meat on the barbecue. I even went as far as requesting it for my wedding party dinner, but my wife wouldn’t let me.

MY FAMILY My gorgeous wife and these three little blondies make it worthwhile getting up each day to work hard and enjoy life. I couldn’t wish for a more beautiful family.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS

Jeroen Leenders

Being involved with this amazing organisation as a parent and a volunteer gives this a special place in my heart. The amount of good the Special Olympics does for our community cannot be explained in a few words. Please support our athletes at the next local, state or national games. Check ‘em out online!

INTENSIVE CARE PARAMEDIC

Jeroen Leenders is an intensive care paramedic at Hamilton station. Born in the Netherlands, he was working as a snowboard guide in the Kitzbuhel Alps in Austria when he met the woman of his dreams, Rebecca, who would change his life forever. After following his now wife to Australia, Jeroen eventually accepted a job as a paramedic in Newcastle. He has three boys – Sebastian, Oscar, and Eddie. His oldest son, Sebastian, who has Down Syndrome, is involved in the Special Olympics Hunter Valley swimming team. This led to Jeroen taking on a volunteer medical role. Jeroen has also been a snowboard coach for the past five years and, in 2017, he travelled with Team Australia to the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria. 66

CAKE I’m a big cake lover. It kind of goes hand-inhand with the barbecue. I’ll have a piece of cake over ice cream any day. There is no pavlova or mud cake in Holland, where I come from, so it didn’t take me long to fully embrace these yummy treats.

SNOWBOARDING I love snowboarding. I love the snow, the mountains, the tricks, the fun, and the places it has taken me to over the years.
