AUTUMN/WINTER FASHION TO FALL FOR
Newcastle Weekly contents
thursday 26 april 2018
This week... From the editor Summer lingered longer than usual this year, but you can feel the mercury starting to dip. The nights are crisper and the days milder. In our house, there are certain pyjama pants – made from stretchy, heavy cotton, you know the ones? – that come out of hiding once the weather gets cooler, and they made their fi rst appearance at the weekend. It’s only a matter of time before we bring out the tracky dacks. I’ve never been a fan of winter; I prefer warmth and sunshine. The short days and sometimes-gloomy weather just don’t do it for me. Nevertheless, I’m doing my best these days not to resist change, and the changing of the seasons falls under that umbrella (pardon the pun). Whether you’re a winter-lover or not, this week’s 2018 Autumn/Winter Fashion Special will help you take the plunge. For our cover shoot, with the gorgeous Tahlia Guimelli, a former Newcastle girl, we collaborated with Stockland Green Hills to bring you their fi nest new-season stock. You’ll also fi nd our top picks from local boutiques on pages 32-36. I’ll leave you with a quote: “Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist them; that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.” – Lao Tzu, Chinese philosopher.

Newcastle Maritime Museum president Ian Jones. Photo: Peter Stoop
Maritime museum eyes sea change Newcastle Maritime Museum president Ian Jones is excited about the chance to dust “mothballs” off some precious artefacts as the volunteer organisation eyes a sea change. The museum, which has been based in Honeysuckle for more than 10 years, showcases the rich maritime history of Newcastle and the Hunter River. It particularly points to the Port of Newcastle’s role in the development of Australia, from the early days of European settlement to the present time. However, with the heritagelisted building’s lease due to expire next month, landowners Hunter Development Corporation (HDC) and Newcastle council are working alongside museum representatives in a bid to secure the organisation’s future. Mr Jones says it’s the right time to
consider an alternative direction. “It is a tough gig getting people into museums,” he tells Newcastle Weekly. “Grants are very hard to get and that makes it tough, especially when there are costs involved to maintain the artefacts. “Under the old direction, the place never changed; nothing has been moved. “So, we’re pretty excited to get other parties involved so we can get some of the stuff out of mothballs and on display for everyone to see.” The maritime museum cares for more than 7,000 artefacts. Many of its treasures are hidden in storage at the former BHP site, which, like the Honeysuckle building, will also soon no longer be available. Mr Jones believes this presents an opportunity to reassess the museum’s vast collection. “The museum is important in
respect to maritime history,” he says. “The port is one of Newcastle’s most vital income streams – it’s the biggest [coal export] in the world and has a heavy history going right back to settlement. “But we’ve got a lot of artefacts that aren’t too relevant, so some of what we’re doing will enable us to distribute that to other museums.” Mr Jones adds HDC and Newcastle council’s involvement is not an attempted “land grab”. He says the museum needs support to ensure its collection remains in public hands. “People jump on the bandwagon of [us] being pushed out by the government,” he says. “But it’s not just a land grab by HDC or anyone else – that shed is in dire need of help and it might be a chance for us to find a suitable home.” - Ben Murphy

news Newcastle’s nightlife vision A plan to breathe new life and colour into Newcastle’s night-time hospitality and cultural scene is on public exhibition until mid-May. Newcastle council says the Newcastle After Dark Strategy details how it will grow the city’s $1.36 billion night-time economy responsibly, after previously pioneering measures to mitigate alcohol-related violence. The strategy proposes a range of initiatives, including the introduction of an Agent of Change principle to overcome tensions between innercity residential and entertainment venue development. Adopted in other major cities, Agent of Change aims to prevent potential noise disturbances by making developers of new apartments – or existing venues seeking to make modifications – responsible for noise management.
Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said a well-planned night-time economy would play a vital role in the city centre’s revitalisation. “Our night-time economy is equally a place of work and productivity, directly employing over 12,000 Novocastrians and accounting for 5.4% of the total Newcastle economy, so it’s imperative that we do all we can to ensure our city thrives safely after dark,” she said. Seven separate night-time precincts are identified in the strategy, which recognises Newcastle’s West End as the natural home of live music, to better tailor planning and preserve their individual characters. You can view the strategy online via newcastle.nsw.gov.au/YourSay or at 282 King Street, Newcastle. Submissions close on 14 May.

news New X-ray service for Port Stephens
New mid-block pedestrian traffic lights and a shared pathway are being installed at Hillsborough Road, Warners Bay to provide a safer route along the busy thoroughfare. Roads and Maritime Services are carrying out the works, with the pathway to connect the traffic lights and nearby bus stop.
The majority of the works will be conducted between 7am to 5pm from Monday to Friday, while some will be carried out between 7pm to 5am from Sunday to Thursday. The works are expected to be completed by mid-June, weather permitting.
Call to speed up inner city bypass Wallsend MP Sonia Hornery has renewed her call for the completion of the final stage of the Newcastle Inner City Bypass after another multi-vehicle crash on Lookout Road. A three-car pile-up near John Hunter Hospital earlier this week caused three kilometres of gridlock from the crash site to the Hillsborough Road exit. Ms Hornery said congestion along Lookout Road was reaching crisis levels, but she believed it could be fixed through better transport planning and by fast-tracking

A new X-ray service has started operating at Tomaree Community Hospital this week. The general X-ray service, which will be delivered through a partnership with Hunter Imaging Group, is set to operate between 8am and 4.30pm from Monday to Friday, with on-call services available after-hours and on weekends. The facility is part of the Hunter New England Imaging network, meaning doctors based at John Hunter Hospital can review X-rays and provide advice to the clinicians at Tomaree in real-time. Port Stephens Duty MLC Catherine Cusack said it was fantastic news for the local community. “This will save people [about] three hours in travel and waiting time to be X-rayed at John Hunter Hospital,” she said. “A big win for Port Stephens residents and visitors.” The opening of the X-ray facility at Tomaree Community Hospital was delayed due to the processing time for the required accreditation through the Diagnostic Imaging Accreditation Scheme.

stage five of the bypass. “As the western suburbs continue to grow, the RMS [Roads and Maritime Services] needs to look at ways of reducing congestion in the long-term,” she said. “Recent changes to local bus timetables and routes have thrown the public transport network into chaos, forcing more people onto the roads and exacerbating the problem. “We need to see work started on the final stage of the bypass, and we need a more comprehensive approach.”

news Artwork adds final touch to The Levee’s development A public art piece has added the final touches to the second stage of a $9.92 million development at The Levee in Maitland. The artwork, titled Clouds Gathering, was created by Newcastle artist Braddon Snape. For almost two years, he worked to produce a piece that symbolised Maitland’s historic relationship with water and the Hunter River. The artwork features within The Riverlink Building – a new hub that connects the banks of the river to the CBD. “It’s taken about 18 to 20 months to make the artwork,” Mr Snape tells Newcastle Weekly. “With the 1955 flood [and others since], there’s obviously a strong flooding possibility in Maitland. “I was playing with inflated steel
and thought of rain coming and clouds forming. “This [piece] is meant to help activate the public square and space, so I worked on the clouds gathering [theme] but it also plays on the idea of crowds gathering here. “The clouds break away onto the wall and the ceiling and the reflections are always changing.” The second stage of The Levee Development, funded by the state government’s Restart NSW Resources for Regions program, included The Riverlink Building, as well as upgrades to the Bourke Street Link and the Riverwalk. Maitland mayor Loretta Baker says the upgrades have completed the CBD’s “amazing transformation”. “The area is almost unrecognisable to what it was a few years ago and it

is testament to all involved,” she says. “The Riverlink Building, in particular, will really strengthen the city’s historic relationship with the Hunter River and its development as the city’s premier lifestyle precinct.” The first component of The Levee Development began in 2014 as the former Maitland Heritage Mall
was overhauled with new paving, furniture and landscaping. Construction of The Riverlink Building, under the second component, started in 2016 and was completed earlier this year. The building’s official opening took place last week. - Ben Murphy

news Challenge to crack aged care crisis Innovators, problem-solvers and designers will join forces at a University of Newcastle-led event in a bid to alleviate the world’s ageing population crisis. The New Futures Hackathon for Aged Care is set to take place from 11 to 12 May at the NeW Space city campus. It will offer participants the chance to learn from aged care experts and mentors before embarking in teams on a 10-hour ‘hack’ to evolve their ideas into viable, technological solutions. University of Newcastle’s Manager of the Integrated Innovation Network (I2N), Siobhan Curran, says the New Futures Hackathon is a health-focused, creative, problem-solving challenge aimed at addressing the implications of the world’s ageing population. “The number of Australians aged 75 years or older is expected to rise by four million by 2060,” Ms Curran says. “Consequently, health systems are predicted to face an array of challenges to meet an increasing demand for aged care health services.” The winning team with the best technological solution – a website, app, or anything in the tech

Swansea Channel to undergo works The state government will resume dredging operations in the Swansea Channel after a build-up of sediment in recent months. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald, said the government had spent $1.1 million on the removal of 41,000 cubic metres of sediment since 2015. “The NSW government will [now] spend a further $100,000 on maintenance dredging in the near future, subject to planning, weather and public safety,” he said. “Boating safety is a priority and it is preferable for dredging works to happen outside the busy school holiday period. “Weather permitting, dredging should be completed by the end of May. “Monitoring of the channel will continue through regular bed level surveys.” Mr MacDonald said dredging in the navigation channel was wholly undertaken by the government due to the presence of stateowned maritime infrastructure in the Swansea Channel.

news Village nears centenary It’s a quiet waterfront village that once faced consideration as a possible site for the nation’s capital. North Arm Cove, which sits a few kilometres off the Pacific Highway, in the Hunter and Mid North Coast regions, will celebrate its centenary next month. These days, the tiny community is dominated by retirees and Sydney weekenders but, on 6 May 1918, famed American architect Walter Burley Griffin earmarked it as a potential location for Australia’s capital city. The plan included wide, green spaces along most of the shoreline, with a provision for jetties, wharves, and civil administration and service buildings, as well as a railway line. North Arm Cove resident John Blackbourn said the village’s future could have panned out quite
differently. “It came down to six final sites, of which North Arm Cove was one, for the obvious reason that the boats could come in from England,” he said. “The locals will tell you that, luckily, we didn’t win that argument – it went to a political decision between Sydney and Melbourne. “[Walter Burley Griffin] designed six locations with maps in a very similar fashion to Canberra, where the whole of North Arm Cove was developed in concentric circles radiating out from government offices, from the park, and from the port, which was over on the other side. “We had a railway line in here that circled and went out again – [that] never happened but it’s great on the map, and [the railway] finished somewhere near Maitland.”
Resident John Blackbourn outside his home in North Arm Cove.
Mr Blackbourn said the picturesque location had become highly sought-after, with land prices rising considerably over the past few decades. He believed two major factors – isolation and water views – were behind the increased interest. “There’s very much a tree change happening at the moment; a lot of the original people here have found
the price of land has gone up and new people have come in from the capital cities, mainly north of Sydney,” he said. “We’re on the east coast of Australia looking east – you can argue all you like, but there’s nowhere better than that. “Overlooking the water, it’s absolutely magic.” - Ben Murphy

news Secondhand threads pay it forward Shop, save and support local communities. That’s the mission of Ruth’s Closet. A ministry of Warners Bay Baptist Church’s Food and Friendship low-cost grocery store, Ruth’s Closet is a secondhand shop that sells clothes and accessories for men, women and children. All of the profits benefit local not-for-profit organisations, including women’s refuges and programs that provide accommodation support for homeless men. Last Friday, the shop donated $2,000 to Eastlakes Family Support Services to bolster its Staying Home Leaving Violence program, a free service that helps women escape domestic violence. Funds raised in the first half of this year will be donated to another crisis support service – Nova for Women and Children – and, later this year, men’s outreach centre Matthew Talbot Homeless Service will benefit. “We are passionate in our support of these organisations as many of the customers of Food and Friendship have been impacted by both domestic violence and homelessness,” Food and Friendship store manager, Rani Prasad-Ferris, said. Annual sleepout swings into gear Vinnies has launched its sixth annual CEO Sleepout ahead of the main event in June. Local business, community and government leaders will sleep outdoors at McDonald Jones Stadium on Thursday 21 June to support the many Australians experiencing homelessness. Each participant commits to raise funds to help Vinnies provide essential services to the people who need them most. “Last year, our Vinnies CEO Sleepout raised $170,000,” executive officer of the St Vincent de Paul Society in Maitland/ Newcastle, Denise Lucas, said. “That’s a significant part of the $5.6 million raised nationally for people experiencing homelessness, and this year we can make an even bigger impact.” The funds raised locally will assist homeless men and children at the Matthew Talbot Homeless Service.

Wheels in motion for service Three organisations have raised funds to establish a mobile dialysis unit for people who suffer from kidney failure. Lions clubs across NSW joined forces with Kidney Health Australia and the Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney. The mobile dialysis unit concept, known as the Big Red Kidney Bus, has been operating in Victoria since 2014. A trial service currently operates in NSW, utilising a loan bus from Victoria. Lions District 201NC, which covers the Hunter Region and Central Coast, recognised the need for the service and pledged to raise $200,000 to establish a permanent mobile bus in NSW. The Lions Club of Toronto are the managing club on behalf of the district.
The three-year project has already surpassed its financial target, thanks, in part, to a generous $100,000 donation from Elderslee on the Central Coast. Lions clubs have also raised funds through raffles, direct donations, grants from two Lions Foundations, and corporate support. The purpose of a mobile dialysis unit is to provide renal services at selected popular holiday locations in the eastern half of NSW, allowing people who require regular treatment the chance to take a break with family and friends.

Probus club’s milestone The Probus Club of TenambitMorpeth celebrated its 30th anniversary at East Maitland Bowling Club last week. For the past three decades, the probus club has provided a platform for friendship in the Maitland area, growing steadily from its foundation membership of 28 in 1988 to more than 130 members at one stage. While numbers have since declined, a strong crowd still rolled into the bowling club to recognise the anniversary. Maitland MP Jenny Aitchison, Paterson MP Meryl Swanson, and foundation members John Fenwick and George Sutherland were among those in attendance. The anniversary included a business meeting as usual, before an Anzac Day commemoration, which was then followed by the birthday party.
Foundation members George Sutherland, left, and John Fenwick, right, with club president Paula Threlfo.
The Probus Club of TenambitMorpeth meets at the bowling club on the third Tuesday of each month from 9.30am. The next meeting will be on 15 May.

Free B ib Semin le ar
The future prospects of this world are truly wonderful and are clearly taught in your Bible. God intends to set up a worldwide kingdom ,literally upon this earth, superseding all the kingdoms of men. God’s offer of life eternal is to those who believe in his Son. That’s the mission of Jesus Christ. He will reward the faithful and will return literally to the earth, and will transform it into a paradise, and rule as the future King of this world. GOD is real and has a plan and purpose , very clearly described in your Bible (see Numbers 14v21, Dan 2v44) This is indeed Good News! This is the Gospel of God ! (Mark 16v15, Acts 8v12)
We encourage you to set some time aside to attend this seminar, with absolutely no obligations. “God’s Offer – Life eternal in His Kingdom” 14 Fifth Street Boolaroo Sunday 29th April 2018 at 6:00pm

Knights win comes at cost Newcastle’s thrilling win over the red-hot Wests Tigers on Saturday has come at a cost. The Knights were ahead 10-0 at half-time, but Wests stormed back in the second period and clung onto a 20-18 lead with just two minutes left on the clock. Knights utility Jamie Buhrer, who had moved into halfback, then provided a brilliant kick for winger Shaun Kenny-Dowall. The former Rooster took a leaping
catch before diving across the line to seal a dramatic two-point win for Newcastle. However, prior to the match-winning try, star signing and regular halfback Mitchell Pearce had been forced from the field for a Head Injury Assessment (HIA). It was later confirmed he sustained a ruptured pectoral muscle and could be sidelined for up to 16 weeks. Newcastle will now face the Sea Eagles on Friday 27 April at Lottoland. Kick-off is at 6pm.
A raucous home crowd will look to push the Newcastle Jets past a dangerous Melbourne City side in Friday night’s A-League semi-final at McDonald Jones Stadium. The Jets had a bye in the first week of the finals series – a reward for finishing in the top two at the end of the regular season – while City cruised past Brisbane Roar 2-0 to reach the final four. The semi-final kicks off at 7.50pm. A win for Newcastle will see the club face either Sydney FC or Melbourne Victory in the grand final on 6 May.
Charity program to hit the surf Mental health surf therapy charity Waves of Wellness (WOW) Foundation is set to launch their new eight-week learn-to-surf program in Lake Macquarie. The WOW Surfing Experience (WOWSE) is designed to teach people experiencing mental health issues how to surf – and is on offer to people in Lake Macquarie for the first time, thanks to the funding support of nib foundation. This news comes after a successful year for WOW, with programs in
Newcastle, Bondi, Cronulla, Ocean Grove, and Wet ‘n’ Wild. Novocastrian WOW chief executive officer, Joel Pilgrim, said WOWSE aimed to normalise mental health challenges, and had been designed specifically for people experiencing mental health issues within local catchment areas. The Lake Macquarie program will start on Wednesday 2 May. Email programs@foundationwow. org for more information or to register.

time out Tales from a Holocaust survivor
Author Paul Kraus holds a copy of The Perpetual Refugee. Photo: Peter Stoop
Often, when we talk about refugees, themes such as race, religion, fear and displacement surface. But the one thing former Novocastrian author Paul Kraus aims to convey in his latest book, The Perpetual Refugee, is hope. “Hope is always an undercurrent in the lives of refugees,” Kraus says. Kraus has triumphed over adversity more times than most. He was born in a Nazi labour camp in late 1944, his mother originally sent to Auschwitz. Against all odds, Kraus, his mother, and his brother escaped persecution, and sought refuge in Australia in the late 1940s. But Kraus – now a three-time cancer survivor – had a troubled childhood, punctuated by feelings of failure, as a Jewish refugee. “I had low self-esteem, felt inferior, lonely and unhappy,” Kraus says. “I did not look like an Australian, wore European clothes, and always felt different.
“The word ‘perpetual’ also has a strong meaning. “In the context of this book, it implies that I will always have a tiny part of me as a refugee. But it’s not just about me; this book is [written] for all refugees post-war.” The Perpetual Refugee is a discontinuous narrative; that is, it offers snapshots of Kraus’ life, rather than a continuous timeline. The book’s subtitle, Images of a Holocaust Child, hints at the types of anecdotes, or self-reflections, Kraus shares. It closes with a titular poem Kraus wrote many years ago, before the concept for this book was even realised. “This book is about self-healing, not only through surviving life-threatening illness and great misfortune, but having the insight, the capacity to recognise the spiritual hunger that we all possess,” Kraus says. “Writing these stories was, in itself, healing.” Kraus, who, along with his wife, recently relocated
from Hamilton South to Brisbane to be closer to family, will launch The Perpetual Refugee at a public author talk at MacLean’s Booksellers Hamilton on Tuesday 8 May from 6.30pm. The book will be available from MacLean’s Booksellers from 1 May. - Georgia Osland

Children learn about modern-day agriculture through fun activities at Tocal Field Days.
For inner-city folk, it’s easy to underestimate the significance of farming and agriculture to the Hunter Region. That’s where Tocal Field Days are vital in helping the community learn about farming and living on the land. Celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, the annual event offers a fun-filled, affordable and educational day out in the heart of the Hunter Valley, at Tocal Agricultural Centre. This year’s theme is ‘fish’. Revellers will be able to catch carp from the lagoon, with experts from NSW Fisheries teaching novices how to cast a line. The fish theme will be carried through to the popular Bake or Burn competition.
This year’s event is set to be bigger and better, with more than 350 exhibitors selling everything from farm machinery to produce to arts and crafts. There’s also the billy-boiling competition, kids’ cooking workshops, piglet races, sheep shearing, gardening talks, livestock demonstrations, and the ute muster. Local school students will provide entertainment through the Talent @ Tocal program. A free park-and-ride shuttle bus will run from Maitland Railway Station via Lorn every hour, to make it easier to attend the event. Tocal Field Days will go from Friday 4 to Sunday 6 May. Tickets are available online at tocalfielddays.com or at the gate.

Privvy advertising moment
Customers front & centre at Privvy At Privvy, customer service extends beyond “hello” and “thanks for shopping with us”.
T
The fashion retail store prides itself on being able to help customers in a real, measurable way, and has worked hard to create a space where women can feel great about themselves, just the way they are. “We fi nd that customers are very hard on themselves about the way they look,” CEO Louise Hampson says. “A lot of the women stare at their faults in the fitting rooms. “With gentle staff contact, positive slogans in our fitting rooms and music playing in the background, we’ve done our best to create a comfortable environment. “Self-love is not a new topic, but it is real. We hear it every day.” Louise established Privvy around 18 years ago in Sydney, where there seemed to be a gap for fresh, on-trend, affordable fashion for mums. Now with five stores in the Hunter – The Junction, Jesmond, Glendale, Maitland and Salamander Bay – Privvy’s presence is undeniable.
The friendly staff at Privvy are there to help make your shopping experience as comfortable as can be.
Each store has recently undergone a brandnew fit-out, with a view to create a space for the busy mum, where everything is about having a bit of “me” time. Shoppers are greeted by a light, fresh environment, with greenery and fairy lights in the fitting rooms for a theatrical effect. All stores feature a children’s area, where the kids can play safely while mothers get to relax and enjoy the fashion experience, while most stores are located within community shopping centres for added convenience. Privvy buys product weekly, based on customer feedback, seasonal demand and current trends. This provides a point of difference to major fashion chains, which tend to order stock months in advance. Louise says this gives Privvy the edge, because its stock is always reflective of demand. Her vision for the store is fi rstly to give customers choice outside of major stores, and secondly to put the customer at the centre of the business model. Privvy also takes pride in supporting local charitable causes, for example, the annual Vinnies CEO Sleepout, for which the store will hold a mother-daughter style night fundraiser at Newcastle’s Bar Petite on Wednesday 9 May. It’s set to be a fun night out, featuring champagne on arrival, canapés, lucky door prizes, and a fashion parade with the latest trends and style advice. Tickets are $40 each, and can be bought at any Privvy store, on social media or online at privvy.com.au

the look
Look sharp Men – we haven’t forgotten about you! One way to look and feel sharp is to maintain a well-kept beard (if you sport one) and hair. These grooming tips, courtesy of Brunker Barbers in Adamstown, will help keep you in tip-top shape.
Hair • Wash hair two to three times a week, depending on how dirty it gets, with shampoo or soap and water. Conditioner is not needed for short hair. • When using a styling product, work hair product between palms of hands first, then distribute. • We recommend King Brown Pomade, an Australian-owned and made brand, for its waxes, hair creams and texturising sprays. • Get regular haircuts, depending on your preferred style. Don’t be afraid to ask your barber for his or her recommendation.
Beards/facial hair • Trim beard regularly when growing out, to keep it neat and tidy. • Use beard oils. • Neck beards are only for rock stars and artists.
For the gentlemen
• Invest in a professional trimmer, such as Wahl brand (sold in-store), to groom ear hair, eyebrows and beards. • Ear hair needs to be tended to. • Trim your nose hair every week. • If you have back hair, consider regular waxing or laser treatment. • Don’t underestimate the value of high-quality tweezers.
Skincare • • • •
Wash your face in the morning. Exfoliate at night. Moisturise skin regularly. Salt water is fantastic for skin conditions like psoriasis. • Shaving oils and shaving creams are essential. We recommend Proraso Professional, sold in-store. • Less is more when it comes to cologne.

Poppy secrets Traditionally planted on Anzac Day is the annual variety of poppy, Papaver nudicaule, the Iceland Poppy that blooms in spring. The beautiful, open-cupped flowers of the Iceland Poppy are borne on long hair stems and my mentor, who grew ‘Springsong’, Jim Oliver, recently departed, shared his secrets with me: Poppies like an alkaline soil, which can be achieved by digging in poultry manure and applying lime. Beds should be prepared one week before planting, and Jim encouraged me to give new seedlings TLC until they became stronger. Lightly water daily, and a week or two after planting, gently lift the leaves up from the soil, carefully turning over the new soil to aerate the new plants.

One last little IN THE GARDEN secret from Jim JUDY SHARPE Oliver – well known for his magnificent poppies, which he shared willingly with Christ Church Cathedral’s Spring Festival: if you don’t want the bees to cross-pollinate and change a favourite colour, rise before dawn, and secure that flower with an elastic band. Before dawn? I’m not there yet!

Forced to leave his sweetheart and travel to the trenches in Europe, engineer Oliver Woodward (Brendan Cowell, pictured) finds himself commanding tunnellers, including Gyton Grantley and Anthony Hayes. The gung-ho group work on a secret network of tunnels, packing it with enough explosives to kill thousands of German troops.

Captain America: Civil War
Hugo Friday, GO!, 7.30pm, PG (2011) Not known for his familyfriendly fare, Martin Scorcese nonetheless proves his versatility as a director in this magical adaptation of the Brian Selznick tale The Invention of Hugo Cabret. Asa Butterfield (pictured) takes on the title role of a young boy who lives in the clock tower of an old train station in Paris, who spends his free time trying to repair an old automaton. Scorcese weaves the history of cinema into the story as Hugo meets Isabelle (Chloe Grace Moretz) and her grandfather (Ben Kingsley).
Saturday, PRIME7, 9pm, M (2016) Movie superheroes aren’t in short supply, but this third instalment in the Captain America series blitzes its competition. After a botched operation in Nigeria, the Avengers are pressured to allow government accountability, dividing the team. While Captain America (Chris Evans, pictured) believes superheroes should remain without interference, Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr) disagrees, escalating into a feud that pits hero against hero.

INTRODUCING NANCY
URGENT
Nancy is a spritely, inquisitive young cattle dog x Jack Russell, with kelpie ears. She is smallmedium size, at about 14kg. Nancy is in foster care with many other dogs ranging from 5kg to 55kg and with horses, and is great with all. She is picking up her obedience and lead skills well, and settled well beside the chair at a busy cafe even on her first outing. Nancy is just an all-round little sweetie, an absolute cracker little dog on the lookout for a home where she can be a true part of the family and will continue her training to keep her mind active.

Luke’s intimate life will seem like a rollercoaster ride; however he’s resilient enough to deal with the changes that lie ahead. In some ways he could even be a bit of an emotional thrill seeker. On the career front, it is hard yakka, but he will feel more and more on top of his game as the year unfolds. Someone who can influence his career will be watching and Luke will undoubtedly make a good impression. His key word is perseverance and he has the ability to see things clearly.

My favourite things GOLF
EDUCATION
Playing golf at Merewether – it is such a friendly club. I really enjoy spend time with five friends who I have now taught to play canasta, and they beat me every time.
Helping kindies with reading and writing at Junction Public School for the past few years has been so rewarding. It’s great to spend time with the devoted teaching staff, who appreciate any help they can get.
Judy Sharpe
NEWCASTLE WEEKLY’S GARDENING COLUMNIST
Judy was born in Cooks Hill, attended Cooks Hill Public School, then attained a place at Hunter Girls High School, a selective high school. Her favourite subject was English, taught by Margaret Tonkin (Henry), who, some years later, introduced Judy to address the ex-students association. To this day, Judy credits Mrs Tonkin for her becoming a gardening writer, originally for The Newcastle Herald, The Newcastle Star and The Post, while she also presented the gardening segment on NBN. Talkback radio became Judy’s favourite medium, beginning with the ABC, moving on to 2HD, and now 2NURFM. Her proudest achievement was persuading Newcastle City Council to fund the development of the “City of Newcastle” rose for the city’s bicentenary. This beautiful red rose is planted in Civic Park. 66
MY SONS FAMILY PETS I would love a Beagle, but there’s no room at the inn now. Life has become more cat hectic – when the Merewether nursery closed and moved to Darby Street, I, of course, had to give Bella, the waving cat, a home. She’s now number three.
Cruising with my sons Scott and Simon, a pleasure we recently discovered. What an incredible moment on the Queen Elizabeth coming through the heads at Nobbys – I cried, our city looked magnificent.
HOLIDAYS Family holidays with my grandchildren, teaching them to play card games. They love 500 and 21.
