Catch of the day CELEBRATE SEAFOOD AT LOVE SEA FOOD TASTES PORT STEPHENS
Newcastle Weekly contents
thursday 25 july 2019
This week... From the editor My job takes me to some wonderful places, not least of which in our very own backyard. Last week you might recall I was invited to a resin art workshop at Artalicious Studios in Mayfield West (which you can read more about on page 33), while this week the picturesque Port Stephens was my office for an afternoon for our cover shoot, starring saxophonist Liam Eastwell, head chef Ben Way and fishmonger Darryn Hearn. It was lovely to be out in the winter sun chatting to these three about the upcoming Love Sea Food Tastes Port Stephens festival (previously separate events). We were joined by a few friendly pelicans, who I thought for sure would try to snap up a few of our edible props, and one cheeky seagull that actually did take a swipe at one of the masterful dishes plated by chef Way. Not to mention the live crab who looked less than impressed to be in front of the camera – it truly made me giggle. That's the amazing thing about my job; no two days are the same and there's always something new in store. You never know if it'll be art or wildlife from one day to the next! You'll fi nd more about this biggerand-better-than-ever foodie festival, coming to Port Stephens in August, on page 28.

news A sustainable approach to reducing homelessness Homelessness is “an opportunity”, according to the manager of nonprofit organisation Hunter Healing Gardens, Margaret Harrington. “We see homelessness as an opportunity, not a big black hole; we see it as a sign that what we’re doing as a culture is not working,” she says. In an effort to turn the tide against rising homelessness statistics, particularly among young adult women in the Lower Hunter, the charity is working towards giving vulnerable girls a hand-up by providing transitory accommodation through its Housing Homeless Girls project. It plans to do this by building a village of tiny houses on the 150 acres of land it leases on the Maitland-Singleton border. Such a setup is known as an
4
ecovillage, where communities live sustainably off the land, and they’re already popular in Europe and America. “These are highly efficient dwellings that reduce the impact on the environment and can help to address homelessness,” Margaret adds. “Homelessness is a sign of unsustainable living. We are witnessing a generation at risk.” At Hunter Healing Gardens, 100 acres will be reserved for environmental use, including the kitchen garden that has already been established. Construction of the first tiny house is under way, and it is hoped it will be finished by the end of the year to accommodate the first four women.
A young woman overlooks the kitchen garden at Hunter Healing Gardens.
The charity is working with Singleton Shire Council to ensure the village is compliant. A crucial element of the project is linking women to work experience and vocational training options, firstly to help them gain relevant references and, consequently, longterm employment. Only then, when they are back on their feet with steady income and therefore better prospects of permanent housing, will they be encouraged to explore life beyond the village.
“They are usually very good kids, with a very good work ethic; they just need someone to give them a chance,” Margaret says. Hunter Healing Gardens is seeking expressions of interest from Lower Hunter businesses to host project participants from January next year. All fields and industries will be considered, from real estate to hospitality. Email hunterhealinggardens@ gmail.com for more information. - Georgia Osland

news Renewed push to raise Newstart Allowance
Newcastle federal MP Sharon Claydon outside Centrelink on King Street. Photo: Peter Stoop
A week of action across the country has renewed the push for an increase to the federal government’s Newstart Allowance. The Raise the Rate Week of Action, which went from 15 to 21 July, encouraged people to meet with local MPs and share why they felt it needed to be lifted. Newcastle federal MP Sharon Claydon said the issue had gathered momentum throughout the Hunter Region. “There has been a coalition or alliance of groups in Newcastle and the Lower Hunter now, who are very well-coordinated around trying to get a renewed focus on the need for an increase to the Newstart Allowance,” she told Newcastle Weekly. “They are enormously respected people in our community and play a big role – people like Kelly Hansen
from Nova for Women and Children and Brad Webb from Samaritans, as well as younger students who have been involved in other forms of community action over recent weeks.” The Raise the Rate campaign’s goal is for the Morrison government to lift the single rate of Newstart, Youth Allowance, and other related payments by at least $75 per week. The rate of Newstart – the main income support while people are unemployed – sits at a maximum of $555.70 a fortnight for singles with no children; $601.10 for singles with a dependent child or children, as well as singles over 60 after nine continuous months of payment; and $501.70 each for partners. Newstart has not been increased in real terms since the 1994 Federal Budget. Continued on page 12

news Professor delves into silent epidemic Women in prison: it’s been deemed a silent epidemic. Globally, females are the new growth industry, having increased in numbers by 70% in Australia over the past 10 years. Professor Elizabeth Sullivan, who is a research leader based at the University of Newcastle, has a particular focus on health and gender equity. This includes women with severe or rare conditions during pregnancy or who are in contact with the criminal justice system. She believes prison sentences have a major impact on women and their children. “About 85% are either pregnant or mothers and incarceration has a cumulative effect on the children,” she says. “When a male is in prison, there is someone on the outside
to look after the children but, for the mothers, out-of-home care becomes much more of an option. “Home detentions, community orders – we’ve got to look at ways to keep women in the community. “For the kids, there’s unstable home care, separation trauma, and an impact on educational opportunities.” Professor Sullivan hosted a public lecture at the Newcastle Conservatorium last week to discuss the growing trend. The Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR) looked into several possible explanations, including an increase in women appearing in NSW courts; a rise in the seriousness of female offending; and an increase in the severity of sentencing and a change in the criminal history profile of women appearing before
the courts. BOCSAR found no evidence that courts were imposing harsher penalties on female offenders, nor any sign that female offending had become more serious. “What they found was an increase in repeat offenders,” professor Sullivan says. “That’s the biggest change – there’s an increase in NSW Police taking matters to court, so women go into remand.” Professor Sullivan’s studies have also focused on Aboriginal women. BOCSAR stated that, between 2011 and 2017 in NSW, the number of Aboriginal women in prison rose by 74%, from 195 to 340, compared with a 40% growth in non-Aboriginal females over the same time period. “There is an over-incarceration

of Aboriginal women,” professor Sullivan says. “About 30% of the adult female prison population is Aboriginal, however, they only represent around 3% of the population as a whole.” - Ben Murphy

news Fundraiser to honour nephews’ memories
Katrina Ridley with photos of her two nephews, Patrick and William.
It has been just over two decades since Katrina Ridley lost her nephews to illness. Patrick was 10 years old when he died from a chronic blood disorder, while William suffered from an adult type of leukaemia and passed away at 20 months. After all of this, Ms Ridley decided that she wanted to make a difference to the lives of
people in pain or those feeling generally unwell, as well as honour her nephews. Now, the Boat Harbour resident will finally get the chance to do just that. A fundraiser is set to take place on Saturday 3 August at Shoal Bay Country Club to support the work of the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI). “Ever since the boys passed away, I’ve wanted to do something in their memory,” Ms Ridley says. “Patrick had a rare genetic blood disorder and he needed medication and injections his whole life. “Two weeks after we buried him, William was diagnosed with leukaemia. “The research just wasn’t there at the time and it is really important. “HMRI is doing really wonderful work and I thought I can honour my nephews by raising money for them.” The event will include a keynote speaker from the HMRI, with proceeds going towards its Viruses, Infections/Immunity, Vaccines and
Asthma (VIVA) Research Program. The program brings together basic laboratory scientists, clinical researchers, respiratory physicians and epidemiologists to investigate diseases of the airways. This includes extensive research into the role of infections and inflammation in the development of asthma and other respiratory problems, including during pregnancy, in cystic fibrosis patients, and even in the gut. The VIVA group also studies the biology of viruses, how they can affect respiration, and methods of developing new vaccines for the treatment of diseases such as cancer. “We’ve got a world-class facility here in our own backyard, but it relies on the community’s support through fundraisers like this to continue to exist,” Ms Ridley adds. “So, I think that’s really worthy.” Tickets for the Patch – Will Boys Legacy Fundraiser are available on HMRI’s website. The event will go from 1pm to 5pm, with dinner to follow. - Ben Murphy

From page 6 “There’s no doubt that Newstart is a payment that’s completely inadequate to deal with the purpose for which it was provided and that’s to assist people to find work,” Ms Claydon said. “I’m hearing increasing stories of people on Newstart – not only can they not afford to pay their rent and power bills, they also don’t have any money to use public transport to get to job interviews, let alone suitable clothing for that.” Labor had pledged to review the rate of Newstart if elected in May, but consequently backed away from the promise as a result of the Coalition’s victory. “We didn’t win, and the question now really is why is the Morrison government refusing to listen to this need?” Ms Claydon said.
Former Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce joined calls for reform last week. He suggested the payment should consider the recipient’s geographical location. However, prime minister Scott Morrison ruled out any raise beyond the usual six-monthly indexation levels, which last increased it by $2. He said more than 90% of Newstart recipients were on other forms of payment, such as an $8.80 energy supplement per fortnight and a maximum rental assistance of $137.20 a fortnight. “It’s about getting people into jobs,” Mr Morrison said. “The latest jobs figures show 20,000 additional full-time jobs. “That’s good news, great news. More jobs! How good are more jobs?” - Ben Murphy

Bushranger era recollected Coin collectors rode a wave of excitement last week when a Royal Australian Mint roadshow arrived in Newcastle to recognise Australia’s bushranger era. The Bold, The Bad and the Ugly Roadshow set up camp in the CBD to remember the era’s role in shaping art, literature, music, culture, and the myth of the Australian larrikin. Royal Australian Mint retail event team leader, Todd Matthews, said it helped to show what the bushrangers meant to the nation. “It’s also nice to represent the different characters, and people relate to different families, especially Ned Kelly,” he said. “We were here in Newcastle last year at about the same time and had a really good attendance so we decided to come back now that the tram and everything is up and running.”
The coin’s design depicts the scene of the classic Australian bushranger and the brave colonial trooper, reflecting the drama and action of the time. Its packaging features the stories of six of Australia’s Wild colonial bushrangers – ‘Brave Ben Hall’, ‘Captain Moonlite’, the Kenniff Brothers, ‘Mad Dog’ Morgan, ‘Moondyne Joe’, and ‘Captain Thunderbolt’ and ‘The Captain’s Lady’. Hall was known as a ‘gentleman bushranger’, with his gallantry, good looks and daredevil ways earning him public sympathy in NSW. ‘Captain Moonlite’ was a notorious bandit in NSW, while Patrick and James Kenniff’s exploits became a part of Queensland folklore when they pursued a vendetta against their arch enemy, station owner Albert Dahlke, and

Perhaps the most well-known in these parts, ‘Captain Thunderbolt’, or Frederick Ward, and his Aboriginal partner, Mary Ann Bugg, carried out a bushranging spree from the Hunter Valley to the Queensland border in the 1860s. The current roadshow tour will wrap up in Gosford today (Thursday 25 July).

The Law Office of Conrad Curry advertising moment
Local law firm shining a light on adverse surgical outcomes for men
A
steady increase in cases involving complications arising from men’s reproductive and urological surgery has prompted local plaintiff legal firm The Law Office of Conrad Curry to hold a free legal clinic for men who are suffering the deeply personal and devastating consequences of adverse surgical outcomes. The event will be held on Thursday 8 August from 10am in the Kotara Room at McDonald Jones Stadium. The aim is to give men an opportunity to discuss their personal situations privately with
experienced lawyers who can advise them about whether they may have a case for medical negligence against their health professional. Principal Conrad Curry says his firm has seen a steep increase in complaints about medical outcomes in the treatment of men’s urological issues mainly focused around prostate cancer and bladder cancer, with the most typical cases arising from surgical outcomes to remove cancerous organs. "Most commonly, we see the results of surgical mistakes and the failure to diagnose post-operative complications," Mr Curry said. "Put simply, it’s about plumbing –

how well the tubes are reconnected after surgery; whether infection is treated correctly; accidental lacerations occurring during surgery or leakage of bowel and bladder substances into the abdomen or peritoneum. "Of course, there are material risks with surgery, but people need to understand those risks before they undertake the procedure and the risks need to be mitigated, monitored afterwards and managed correctly." The Men’s Health Day will give men a safe space to talk about their cases and find out if they would benefit from pursuing it legally.
"The broader majority of health care professionals are incredibly diligent and meticulous, but when something goes wrong, it is devastating," Mr Curry said. "We want to raise awareness and let men know that there are avenues for redress." A short presentation will be held at 6pm, with private consultations with Principal Conrad Curry or Senior Associate Jane Bulter held throughout the day from 10am until 9pm. More information and appointments can be made on (02) 4050 0330 or online at conradcurrylaw.com.au/events.

news Charity first peddles a need for speed
Ronald McDonald House Northern NSW chief executive Ross Bingham, right.
A first-ever CEO ride-off will raise funds for Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) next week. Twenty local chief executives are set to take part in a one-kilometre competitive speed ride this Tuesday 30 July. It will start at Ronald McDonald House Newcastle, with participants to race for the fastest time, as well as
the overall trophy and local kudos. RMHC Northern NSW chief executive Ross Bingham said he was thrilled by local business support and described what it meant to the charity. “Over the past two decades, I’ve got to know many families who stayed at the Houses while their child received treatment,” he said.
“During this time, I’ve heard countless inspirational stories and have seen how valuable the charity’s work has been to the community. “We’re incredibly grateful to the local businesses and CEOs who consistently support our charity and allow us to do such important work. “The overall funds generated from Ride for Sick Kids Northern NSW will play an instrumental role in helping families stay together in their time of need and ensure the great work of RMHC can continue.” RMHC provides a home away from home for families, allowing them to stay close to their sick or injured child while they receive treatment in nearby hospitals. Last year, Ronald McDonald Houses across Northern NSW provided about 7,800 nights of accommodation to more than 770 families.
The CEO ride-off will launch the Ride for Sick Kids community event, which takes place in September. It is an initiative that allows everyday people to use their two wheels and decide two goals – how many kilometres they want to ride and how much money they want to raise. All proceeds from the ride will be donated to the Northern NSW chapter, which includes two Ronald McDonald Houses in Newcastle and Tamworth, Ronald McDonald Family Rooms at the John Hunter Hospital and Gosford Hospital, and the Ronald McDonald Family Retreat in Forster. Almost 8,500 kilometres have been travelled since the inaugural ride across Northern NSW in 2005. Visit rideforsickkids.org.au if you want more information or details on how to donate.

Mission Australia has urged young people in Newcastle to speak up on personal concerns and broader issues that are important to them. An annual Youth Survey is open until 9 August. The charity hopes that, with more participation this year, it will be able to provide a broader overview of issues that are important to the health, mental health and wellbeing of young people across the country. This year’s Youth Survey also includes some new focus questions to better understand youth’s thoughts around bullying, disability and whether young people feel they have enough of a say about issues that affect them. the skills, character and leadership to leave a legacy akin to the elders whose custodianship of the land we respect and acknowledge. “We owe a debt of gratitude to the organising committee, led by Justine Russell, the police, PCYC clubs, volunteers, elders and the community, who have come together to make this a memorable and impactful event.” The tournament was formed after consultation with Aboriginal communities and the youth on ways to start reconciliation between young people. The rugby league 7s competition, which kicked off the tournament last Tuesday, consisted of one age group - the under-16s. Kamilaroi South won the Boys Plate against Awabakal White, while Awabakal Red took out the Boys Cup over Eora.
The Girls Plate went to Biripi and Darug West were winners in the Girls Cup. In the football 5s at Speers Point, Awabakal White won the Boys Final Cup and Dharawal claimed the Girls Final Cup. Awabakal Red was crowned the Boys Premier Final winners and Awabakal Black took out the Girls Premier Final. Back at Raymond Terrace, Awabakal Red won the netball under-14s competition, with Wiradjuri Platypus named runnersup. The Nations of Origin wrapped up on Friday with under-14s and 16s basketball at Broadmeadow. In the 14s boys, Wonnarua beat Wiradjuri Platypus, while Biripi defeated Wiradjuri Platypus in the girls. Biripi then took out the under-16s

sport Magpies line up shot at Cup upset against Mariners Maitland Magpies’ clash with the Central Coast Mariners is the “talk of the town” as the club prepares for the FFA Cup Round of 32 battle next week. The David vs Goliath fixture was locked in when Maitland downed fellow Northern NSW National Premier League (NPL) side Hamilton Olympic 2-1 last month. The Magpies’ road to the Round of 32 – the first time the club has reached this stage of the nationwide competition – also included a 4-0 belting of Swansea, a 4-3 thriller over Charlestown, and a 7-2 thumping of Boambee. Maitland star Alex Read said, while qualifying was a goal at the start of the season, the squad’s depth had allowed it to compete on two fronts.
The Magpies are fourth in the NPL, eight points behind premiers Edgeworth, which beat them 3-1 at the weekend, but have played three games less. “To make the Round of 32 is good, but we also want to do something in the league as well, so carrying that form throughout the entire time shows the squad that we’ve got and that we are capable of anything really,” Read said. The FFA Cup clash, which will be played at Maitland No.1 Sportsground on Wednesday 31 July, has been backed by Maitland council. The council will meet all costs associated with event planning, ground transition both before-andafter the event, and staff presence. It also promised to provide
Maitland Magpies defenders Tom Davies and Alex Read ahead of the FFA Cup clash with the Central Coast Mariners.
underwriting support of $11,000, should the event suffer a loss. Read said the fixture had captured the city’s attention. “It’s the talk of the town at the moment which is good, both for the community and the club,” he said. “As a player, you want to play in the big games, you don’t want to just be content playing in the league and winning the grand final, even though that’s fantastic. “Games like this, you thrive on it
as a player and I know a lot of the boys have been talking about it nonstop, so we’re all looking forward to it.” Gates open at 5.30pm, with the match to kick off at 7.30pm. Visit maitland.nsw.gov.au to buy tickets. Edgeworth also qualified for the Round of 32, with the Eagles flying to the Northern Territory to tackle Darwin Olympic last night (Wednesday 24 July). - Ben Murphy

people in the community need it. “The only way we’re going to do it is by raising some money so we can keep ripping into some research.” Hughes said it was thanks to community support, as well as businesses like McDonald Jones Homes, that the Mark Hughes Foundation had developed into a national foundation. “It started right here in Newcastle and we don’t forget that,” he said. “Get to the game, wear your beanie and show your support. Every time I see someone wear a beanie, it gives me a lot of strength.” Newcastle is sitting just inside the NRL’s top eight after last Saturday’s heavy defeat at the Sydney Cricket Ground. At one stage, the Knights only trailed by two points, 12-10, but a try to Roosters captain Boyd Cordner opened the floodgates. The tri-colours then blitzed Newcastle with another five unanswered tries to claim their biggest win of the season. The Knights tackle Wests Tigers at McDonald Jones Stadium this Friday 26 July from 6pm.

The Newcastle Knights will look to bounce back from a 48-10 loss to the Sydney Roosters and raise much-needed awareness when the club hosts Wests Tigers in the Beanie for Brain Cancer Round. Brain cancer is the largest cancer killer of both children and adults under 40 years of age, while it is also the most underfunded. “We need answers to brain cancer,” former Knight Mark Hughes said. “We need a cure – I need it and so many other
Newcastle Northstars suffered back-to-back losses to runaway leaders Canberra in the Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) over the weekend. In the nation’s capital on Saturday, Canberra scored the only goal of a tight first period through Wehebe Darge, only for Sammy Banga to equalise for the Northstars after the break. However, the Brave’s Jesse Gabrielle bagged a double to make it 3-1 and the visitors could only add a consolation as Banga grabbed his second of the night. Newcastle then played host on Sunday, but it was the same result, with Canberra storming to a 2-0 lead. Despite Richie Tesarik snatching one back, the Brave responded to grab two more goals before Banga rounded out the scoring in the third to make it 4-2. The second-placed Northstars face Sydney Ice Dogs away this Friday 26 July at 7.30pm. They will then host Sydney Bears at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium on Saturday 27 July from 5pm.

Catch of the day Fresh is best, and local is even better. In picturesque Port Stephens, fishmongers and chefs alike live and breathe local catches, often going to great lengths to offer up
seafood caught in our very own backyard. A five-minute chat with Nelson Bay Fish Market co-owner Darryn Hearn elicits just how much knowledge he has of the local
fishing conditions and the passion that inevitably goes along with that. “We’re all for local [seafood],” he says. Such is the premise of the annual Love Sea Food festival, which this year joins forces with Tastes at the Bay food, wine and jazz festival, usually held in November, to become Love Sea Food Tastes Port Stephens. Destination Port Stephens chief executive Eileen Gilliland says it makes sense to combine the two already-strong events to drive tourism in the cooler months. “We decided to bring the two events together so that we could merge them into one big, monthlong celebration,” she says. “They were both strong events but by bringing them together, we can create an even stronger event.” Last year, Love Sea Food drew 11,000 people on day one, while Tastes at the Bay attracted about 10,000 across the weekend. This year, those numbers are
expected to rise even further, with plenty on offer throughout the month to suit every taste. It all kicks off with the Port to Plate Gala Dinner at Broughtons at the Bay on Saturday 3 August, at which a stellar line-up of chefs, including Little Beach Boathouse’s Ben Way, will plate up a six-course meal matched with wines. Indulge in a variety of festival lunch and dinner specials offered by eateries all around Port Stephens, or get hands-on at the weekly seafood-themed cooking classes at various restaurants. Rounding out the month with a bang will be the Tastes Port Stephens Food, Wine and Jazz festival on Saturday 31 August and Sunday 1 September, featuring fresh oysters for sale, tastings, market stalls, live jazz, cooking demonstrations and a cruise of the bay. Students push the envelope Hunter Catholic school students’ moral compasses have been put to the test in this year’s ASPIRE production, 365 Questions, Issues and Good Deeds. The Catholic Diocese of MaitlandNewcastle’s performing arts program, which can be likened to the public schools’ annual Star Struck showcase, hones students’ creative skills in areas of singing, dancing, acting, music and scriptwriting. Led by artistic director Anna Kerrigan since its inception eight years ago, ASPIRE gives young people a vessel to explore issues that are relevant to them. This year’s production highlights topics such as mental health, gender equality, dares and vlogging.
Singer and actress Chloe AnsonSmith, who is in Year 11 at St Francis Xavier’s College Hamilton, says the show’s theme has helped her be more compassionate. “My character is always happy, always trying to uplift others,” she says. “In one of the songs I sing, Proud, it’s all about making someone feel proud and showing them that you don’t need recognition to do good deeds. “It’s showed me I can make others feel happier even by smiling.” It is this ethic Kerrigan is most proud of as artistic director. “[Young people] are prepared to work really hard,” she says. “I think they get a bad rap a lot of the time as being this generation

of people who don’t care but they actually care an awful lot and often it’s us adults who don’t listen very well.” 365 Questions, Issues and Good Deeds is no ordinary school play, with the diocese investing significantly in quality sound, lighting and production teams and treating its cast of 150 students with
the same level of professionalism that would be expected of them in the real world. Three of the six scheduled shows at Newcastle’s Civic Theatre from Wednesday 31 July to Saturday 3 August are already sold out. Tickets to those sessions still open are available via Ticketek. - Georgia Osland

time out Book talk Jeff Popple reviews three tales of domestic suspense. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com The Most Difficult Thing by Charlotte Philby
Macmillan, $29.99
This chilling Nordic novel traverses the themes of untrustworthy spouses and family fragility that dominate most domestic thrillers. As with other such novels, it taps into the sense of uncertainty that pervades modern society and the feeling that we can never really know anyone. At the core of Edvardsson’s book is 15-year-old Stella, who is accused of the murder of a 32-year-old sexual predator. Her parents are initially supportive, but as the murder trial unfolds, dark secrets are revealed. None of the characters are particularly likeable, but Edvardsson keeps a good rein on the reader’s attention. Dark and disturbing.
The Chain by Adrian McKinty Hachette, $32.99
Borough Press, $29.99
The Most Difficult Thing is an engaging debut by the granddaughter of notorious British traitor, Kim Philby. Set between London, the Maldives and the Greek Islands, it combines elements of the domestic suspense novel with the spy thriller. The book opens with successful magazine editor Anna Witherall planning to abandon her rich husband and twin daughters whilst on a supposed business trip to Greece. Through flashbacks, we learn of the build-up to that decision and of her dangerous descent into spying. Probably more domestic suspense than spy novel, it is a well-constructed story that gradually builds to a suspenseful and surprising conclusion.
The most gripping of the three is Adrian McKinty’s The Chain. Described as ‘Jaws for parents’, it is a tense, addictive novel about the lengths people will go to protect their children. Rachel Klein is shattered when her daughter is kidnapped and then horrified that she must kidnap another child in order to get her daughter back. As she struggles to comply with the kidnappers’ demands, Rachel becomes determined to fight back and break the chain. This thrilling book is filled with twists and turns and some very suspenseful moments and will keep you turning the pages late into the night. Highly recommended.
“SALVATION IS OF THE JEWS” WHAT DID JESUS MEAN? Jesus Christ was born in the land of Israel and bought a message of salvation to the world - this message is still just as relevant today! Israel, the national homeland of the Jewish people, has struggled to survive for generations but is alive and well today. Who are the Jews and what is their position in the world? Why have they endured suffering and persecution for so long? Why did Jesus connect salvation with the Jewish people? See John 4v22. These questions and more will be answered at this seminar and can be found in your Bible. The World of the 21st century is in desperate need of help, from moral corruption, overpopulation, pollution, wars and famines. Is there prospect for relief? Yes, there is! That’s part of the mission of Jesus Christ, God’s Son. He will return literally to the earth. He will bring salvation and will transform the world into a paradise— bright and beautiful. Dancing Queens to strut their stuff
The Dancing Queens take instructions from choreographer Steve Chandler during rehearsals.
Forget Dancing with the Stars: Anglican Care’s ‘Dancing Queens’ have been in the groove as they prepare to strut their ABBA moves alongside Australian entertainment royalty, Rhonda Burchmore. Six residents, aged from 72 to 94, one daughter and three staff members took part in a gruelling
rehearsal schedule last week. Their hard work will be on show during a Sensational Seniors concert, spearheaded by Ms Burchmore, at Club Macquarie, Argenton, today (Thursday 25 July). Sensational Seniors is an innovative concept created by Anglican Care, which aims to showcase
INC
and celebrate the positives that come from growing older. One of the Dancing Queens, Molly, is set to play Agnetha to her daughter Sue Green’s Anni-Frid. Even at the spritely age of 94, Molly still loves to dance. Living in the bush when she was younger, she was always the choice when the dads needed help in teaching their sons to dance – so dancing is like walking to her. “Mum has given everything a go; it’s really special to be able to share this experience with her – watch out, the mum and daughter Dancing Queens are coming,” Ms Green says. Unlike Dancing with the Stars, there won’t be one winner on the dance floor but 10. No one will be judged, only cheered on in a demonstration of what can be achieved by the Dancing Queens. The group has been trained by local choreographer Steve Chandler, from Australian Dance and Talent Centre. The concert will go from 11.30am to 1.30pm.

The Lion King (PG) In Africa, a pride of lions rules over an animal kingdom from Pride Rock. A young lion cub, son to King Mufasa (James Earl Jones) and Queen Sarabi (Alfre Woodard), is presented to the gathering animals by Rafiki the mandrill (John Kani), the kingdom’s shaman and advisor. Soon, however, Mufasa’s younger brother, Scar (Chiwetel Ejiofor), concocts a plan for the throne. The original animated movie was released in 1994, with the soundtrack by Hans Zimmer (The Dark Knight Trilogy) and Elton John being the standout feature. A retelling of Shakespeare’s Hamlet and (questionable) ‘homage’ to the Kimba the White Lion manga, The Lion King was a departure from Disney’s usual princess fare at the time. Jon Favreau brings his ‘live-
action’ Jungle Book VR technology back in a bigger stride, aiming this time to give a photorealistic, ‘National Geographic’ look to the movie with mixed results. Disney is well known for anthropomorphising their animal characters, making us empathise with a whole range of characters including mice, ducks, hyenas and lions. Here, then, it is made quite difficult to engage with our cast of characters as one cannot clearly
‘read’ a lion’s face regardless of what they are saying (in plain English). Subdued, too, are the stylistic landscapes, magical horizons and iconic poses from the original. Verdict: Like Aladdin, this is a flat experience. It is a wonder who Disney is making these remakes for. Perhaps by trusting the source material, a new generation could be enticed into the originally intended experience. 2 stars. - Luke McWilliams

in the garden
Succulent life for cacti Apart from grass, the most commonly grown plant today would have to be the humble succulent, followed by cactus. Common is certainly the best description as they are so easily
propagated and shared with other gardeners, which once was the case with plants such as geraniums. Succulents and cacti have far exceeded geraniums’ popularity, mainly because of apartment living, which provides little space for anything other than potted plants. I am a little derisive about these unimaginative plants, which are easy to cultivate and not very challenging to a real gardener, but still, they serve their purpose. Admittedly, they can look great when different varieties and colours are planted in a large bowl requiring little attention. It is often thought that cacti and succulents like to grow in a hot spot, which is true, but also, with a little acclimatisation, they can be grown inside in a well-lit position. It is commonly thought that these plants don’t require regular watering; certainly, this does apply to cacti, but recently, in the nursery, we displayed trays of succulents
outside and along came days of rain and they loved it. One good example is ‘String of Pearls’ – some fi nd it difficult to grow, me included, until I decided to grow it in a glass of water with no soil at all and it is thriving. The plant world surely can be an enigma. If potting cacti and succulents, it is essential to have a free-draining mix, which is now available as these plants have become so popular. Look for Searles Cacti and Succulent Mix. Succulents and cacti require nutrients just like other plants. Feed them twice-yearly with a pant food low in nitrogen, as in the mix Searles has developed, a designated Flourish specified for succulents and cacti. Most cacti prefer a winter rest, requiring little water during this period. If growing in the garden, remember winter winds can be drying and a little water may be necessary.
IN THE GARDEN JUDY SHARPE
THIS WEEK • Plant out strawberries and rhubarb, if available. • Use white oil to wipe dust of hard-leaved indoor plants - this discourages insects as well as adding shine. • One of my favourite plants, hippeastrums, will soon be available. If you have them growing in the garden, pot up a low bowl (terracotta looks great) and display them inside when in flower.

Downsizers crunch the numbers on their new lifestyle lifestyle and providing the land lease model was a game changer, offering a more affordable home ownership solution. “Downsizing into a land lease community provides a way for Australians with less superannuation to live comfortably in a new home they love. “The average age pension ($36,301) is just over half what the average Australian couple needs to fund a comfortable retirement ($61,061) and the land lease model allows them the opportunity to make an affordable and sustainable housing decision,” Simon said. Smart and savvy down-
sizers have recognised early on the unique benefits of the model, where they purchase a new home and lease the land through a weekly site fee. It offers them a more affordable upfront price point with no stamp duty to pay and no exit or deferred management fees, allowing residents to keep 100% of any capital gains. Prior to moving into Latitude One, residents Darlene Petersen and her husband lived less than an hour away and made the decision to downsize early in a bid to save for their retirement. “Being able to downsize now
meant that we could still work, have that alone time we wanted and spend more time with people we loved, doing things we like to do – all whilst working towards our retirement. “The land lease model is fantastic, we would never have been able to afford to live near the water if we had to buy land – it gives us our dream home at a price we could afford. “A brand new home like this would be worth a fortune elsewhere – here it’s so simple, no 50 page contracts, no exit fees, just very, very easy,” Darlene said. As anticipated, the result of the 2019 federal election has started a ‘Scomo effect’ on Australia’s property market with leading economists predicting an increasing spike in real estate activity. With many news sources now reporting a more positive housing environment, vendor confidence is growing and more asset rich, cash-poor downsizers are crunching the numbers on freeing up their home equity to help fund their golden years. Ingenia CEO, Simon Owen, said many downsizers are struggling to fund a comfortable

Valkyrie
Saturday, 9GEM, 10.45pm, M (2008)
This thriller is top-notch. X-Men director Bryan Singer tells the gripping tale of Operation Valkyrie, a shadow government that would control Germany if Adolf Hitler (David Bamber) bit the dust. Working to ensure the dictator’s demise are Claus von Stauffenberg (Tom Cruise, pictured) and his cohorts – Terence Stamp, Tom Wilkinson, Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy and Eddie Izzard.
Friday
pick of the week The Fate Of The Furious Wednesday, NBN, 8.30pm, M (2017)
Eight movies in and the fury hasn’t died down. The cars are faster, the crashes louder and the storyline thinner. In this latest telling, Dom (Vin Diesel, pictured) goes rogue after he’s seduced into working with new terror entry Cipher (Charlize Theron). She’s the definition of high-tech terrorism where driverless cars controlled from her computer are used as high-speed weapons.

Wonder Woman Wednesday, PRIME7, 8.30pm, M (2017) This is a compelling and stunningly shot exploration of the origins of the female superhero. Gal Gadot (pictured) commands the screen as the titular character, with a welcome emphasis on her strength and conviction. Set during World War I, Gadot is in her element as the warrior trying to stop a global threat, while also discovering her true destiny.

SIMON BAKER - 30 July 1969 Uranus, the electric and exciting planet of the Zodiac, will rule Simon’s affairs during the year ahead. Dramatic events will surprise and at the same time unnerve him in his professional and personal life. So be prepared! Simon will be able to achieve many things and his dreams are likely to come true, but he mustn’t be distracted or scattered with his energies. He will be breaking through his own self-limitations and this will present challenges from his family and friends.
ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR
CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY
LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT
CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN
Your willpower is at its weakest and your desires outstrip your capacity to fulfil them. There’s nothing you’d like better than a holiday, theatre outing or riotous night out but if the bank balance won’t stand it, financial realities have to be faced. Grumbling won’t help.
Your desire to travel will be boosted for a few months, as indeed will a need to expand your knowledge, perhaps by taking up a course at a local college. Keep an open mind. Allow yourself encounters with new ideas. It’s also time to embark on a fitness routine.
Work of all kinds could be frustrating until Neptune goes direct on 28 November. If you’re engaged in a detailed task such as dressmaking, DIY or craft work, you may find the going difficult. There could be unexpected hitches or you may decide to set it aside for a while.
If you’re the sort of person who puts little credence in the world of psychic awareness, you could be in for something of a shock as a revelation is in store. You’re intrigued by mysteries and no mystery is more alluring than that of your subconscious mind.
TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY
LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG
SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV
AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB
You’re a soft touch at the moment, so much so that you must avoid being taken for a ride. The people you help may not want to take responsibility for their own lives or for paying their own debts. So be very wary of allowing yourself to be manipulated.
There may some complicated matter involving financial matters that involve other people’s money, e.g. your mortgage, joint properties, joint businesses or even the company you work for may be downsizing, which could mean they are now in a position of having to let go employees.
With Neptune retrograde until 28 November, you must go easy on your expenditure, avoid the shops, don’t go looking for bargains and don’t let anyone else talk you into buying anything. Older relatives and children could be irritating possibly because they need your assistance, eating into your spare time.
Your innate kindness and compassion for others is being stimulated and your protective instincts will be strongly energised in the coming months. However, you may tend to be rather possessive, not allowing loved ones, close friends and colleagues an opportunity to stand on their own two feet.
VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT
SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC
PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR
Tension in the home and family could be caused by a frank statement that trespasses into tactlessness. Forthright speech is acceptable in some situations, but this isn’t one of them. Timing is all! All is not well with at least one personal relationship.
You may not be feeling your best so slow down and take some time to coddle yourself. You may have the start of a cold or some other ailment, such as backache. This isn’t likely to be a wonderful time at work, so be sensible and rest when you can.
You could be a little too blunt for comfort since you won’t be able to see why you should keep your opinions to yourself. Some financial self-restraint is required in coming months if you don’t want your finances to look like a train wreck.
GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE If you’re feeling at all discouraged by the sheer volume of the tasks ahead, you should console yourself with the thought that even Rome wasn’t built in a day. At work, believe nothing that you hear and only 50% of what you see until you know the full facts!

My favourite things ANIMALS I’ve always been an animal lover and our family regularly had pets when we were kids. Our collie dog, Prince, provided much love and entertainment in and around the house but was a real sook during thunderstorms and would end up in our bed, much to David’s pretended annoyance.
VISITING SICK KIDS Visiting seriously ill children in hospital can often be a very sombre, yet rewarding, experience. Also most rewarding is providing donations of Lions members’ hand-knitted beanies to children at the Ronald McDonald House, adjacent to the John Hunter Hospital, where parents and others can gather as a family unit.
FUNDRAISING I enjoy setting up displays when fundraising for the foundation. The displays provide information and materials for people to read and become aware of diabetes, which is becoming quite prevalent in society. The principal activity of the foundation is to fund research into causes and treatment of diabetes.
Noelene Heggart
LIONS DISTRICT 201N3 DIABETES FOUNDATION
Born and bred in Newcastle, Noelene’s involvement as a Past District Governor and volunteer member of Lions District 201N3 has spanned 40 years, during which time she has always shown a keen interest in public relations. Having served in several positions within the District, Noelene has been the recipient of the Lions Multiple District 201 Syd Packham Award for Public Relations over three separate years. Her appointment in a voluntary capacity to the Lions District 201N3 Diabetes Foundation, which is based in Newcastle, has allowed her to shine a spotlight on various health issues that impact upon adults and children who are faced with the challenges of living with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The foundation is supported in many ways financially by local Lions, Lioness and Leo clubs, which, in turn, allows it to provide seed funding for research into causes and treatment of diabetes. 62
RAFFLES Making up raffle baskets as prizes for our fundraising activities is a hobby I enjoy immensely. The enthusiasm of our Lions members sourcing the prizes, along with the generosity of the public in purchasing the tickets at our shopping centre stalls, allows us to donate to many worthy causes.
GARDENING Gardening has always been a keen interest of mine. My husband David also likes gardening but he tends to watch how it’s done, which is fine as he often gets in the way, although he is handy for putting the green waste bin out for collection... when he remembers.

hey were the forgotten diggers. A generation of young men who fought for Australia like their fathers before them. But they returned as outcasts, casualties of a war nobody understood. Yet time heals the injustices of the past. Now they are heroes, as revered as the warriors of Gallipoli, Tobruk, Kokoda and Korea. The Bradford Exchange is proud to honour the servicemen of Vietnam with the “Veterans Remembered Ring”.

Place one of your own rings on the chart and find a circle that is completely covered by your ring (a simple band works best for accurate measuring). Write your size on the Proof of Personal Allocation Form. Men sizes range between 8–15.
A Moving Achievement in Craftsmanship and Design
As a bold salute to our Vietnam heroes, this handsome ring has been precisioncrafted by the Master Jewellers of The Bradford Exchange and plated in sterling silver for an elegantly gleaming finish. The famous Iroquois ‘Huey’ chopper looms large and proud in a rich silver-tone from a bed of genuine black onyx. The defining symbol of a generation, the ‘Huey’ is surrounded by the words ‘Veterans Remembered’ and a laurel wreath, the eternal symbol of the hero. Each side is flanked by military stars in dramatic raised-relief, while the inner band is engraved with the words every veteran lives by: Sacrifice • Mateship • Pride. More than fifty years after the first troop deployment, this message resonates stronger and more meaningful than ever before.
