news Lifeline answers “most calls ever” Novocastrians were among the unprecedented number of Australians calling for crisis assistance during the early stages of COVID-19.

In the months from March to June, national charity Lifeline recorded 250,000 calls from Australians experiencing personal crisis, including 3,000 from the Hunter.

Lifeline offers 24-hour crisis support and suicide prevention services.

Local subdivision, Lifeline Direct, is based in Islington and accepts calls from Newcastle and Hunter regions, the Central Coast, Northern Rivers and the New England.

Lifeline Direct Regional General Manager, Julie Wicks, said the sheer number of people needing crisis support during COVID-19 had been felt across the country.

“We answered the most calls we ever had during this time,” she said.

“Thirteen eleven fourteen (13 11 14) is a national number and, locally, we play a part in that.”

Ms Wicks said people in the Hunter were anxious about an array of things.

“In the early weeks, 47% of our calls mentioned COVID-19,” she said.

“For those who already struggle with mental health, the isolation increased anxiety and depression.”

Loneliness was also common among Hunter callers.

“The elderly experienced real loneliness during the pandemic,” Ms Wicks said.

“They couldn’t see their loved ones, they couldn’t get out, and they didn’t have any social outlets like they usually do, so it was a case of isolation, plus loneliness, plus worry.

“And, of course, the fear of the unknown escalates poor mental health.”

Lifeline Direct volunteers, who usually work four hours every fortnight, were presented with a lot of in-house challenges too.

“We were not prepared for the number or the type of calls that we received during this time,” Ms Wicks said.

“Our many volunteers did extra shifts to keep up.

“The pandemic definitely changed things.

“It was a lot of thinking on our feet to meet the demand from people in crisis.”

Maintaining the charity’s mission, however, became the volunteers’ mantra.

“Unconditional positive regard is the message we give every caller,” Ms Wicks said.

Community concerns were ongoing, Ms Wicks said.

see restrictions changing, many are worrying about what happens postpandemic,” she said.

“They’re worried about how we return to life as it was, and what is the new normal.

“I think 3,000 (national calls per day) may be the new normal, so we’re preparing ourselves for this.”

news New group guides fathers through “rocky road” Dads who are in distress as they navigate child access disputes and the family courts now have access to a new support network in the Hunter.

The Australian Brotherhood of Fathers (ABF) and End All Domestic Violence (Endalldv) launched a Newcastle Dads Support Group amid Men’s Health Week, which went from 15 to 21 June.

Founder of ABF, Leith Erikson, said the group had been created because Newcastle was a hotspot for its 1800Father (1800 328437) support line.

“For us, with the 1800Father phone support service we provide, Newcastle is a hot spot, we get a lot of enquiries from the Hunter New England Region and that’s

been from the very beginning of us talking about reforms and family law and support for men in the community,” he said.

“So, when there was an opportunity to come here, we jumped at it.

“It was a no-brainer for us to come down and set up and we’ll, ideally, roll out more services here and try and be as positive and proactive as we can in the community.”

The ABF is a lobby group of Australian fathers from all walks of life that seek reforms to social policy in government and the courts to protect the rights of fathers and their families.

Mr Erikson added that the group was about giving fathers support and highlighting

“There’s a rocky road through but once you get [to] the other side and emotions calm, things tend to smooth out,” he said.

Another campaign, Endalldv, empowers communities to take ownership of family and domestic

violence while providing tools and services to make that change a reality.

For group member and volunteer Adrian Batterham, the inaugural meeting last week gave him the opportunity to share his story and connect with other fathers.

and a custody battle, he hopes the group will lead to other dads reaching out for help.

“It was great, I almost broke out into tears a couple of times,” he said.

“It was pretty emotional, there was a lot of emotion in it, but Leith did a good job of bringing it back, so we were happy when we left.”

He added that the group is helping to fill a hole in the system.

“There is bugger all men’s groups out there for blokes to get support,” he said.

“Don’t do it alone, don’t deal with the anxiety on your own because it festers, it can make good men bad, it breaks good men.

“The amount of anxiety you get from [a situation like mine] is phenomenal, sometimes it just gets too much.”

Fellow member and volunteer, Marc Lorbach, echoed Adrian’s

thoughts.

“It was really good, it was a good chance for everyone to open up in a group setting, it was a safe place and we all came there with shared experiences, which gives us all that bond,” he said.

In 2009, Marc was faced with a legal battle that would span years just to earn the right to see his kids after his marriage broke down.

He added that a support group like this would have been incredibly helpful during his relationship and family breakdown.

The group is open to any dad in distress.

It meets every Tuesday from 5.45pm to 7.30pm at 846 Hunter Street, Newcastle West.

Australians have rallied behind the Mark Hughes Foundation (MHF) to raise $2.55 million across the NRL’s Beanie for Brain Cancer Round.

This year’s campaign urged fans to buy a MHF beanie online, at selected IGA and Lowes stores, or to donate.

A fundraising target of $2 million was surpassed on Sunday afternoon, providing a vital boost to brain cancer research, while 135,000 beanies were sold.

Founder Mark Hughes said that, during these extraordinary times, organisers weren’t sure how the campaign would unfold.

“We should have known better,” he said.

“Once again, the rugby league community and beyond are right behind us.

“We are continually blown away at the support from all levels.”

All funds raised will go straight to research, with the NRL Beanie for Brain Cancer Fellowship recently appointed at The Children’s Medical Institute, joining the ongoing Matt Callander Fellowship at Kolling Institute and $2 million in innovation grants.

Apart from selling beanies, Hughes said the national exposure and awareness for brain cancer gave real hope to patients and their families.

“The beanie has become a symbol of hope for all of us out there facing this disease,” he said.

Statistics show survival rates for brain cancer have increased by just 1% over the last 30 years and it receives less than 5% of federal funding for cancer research.

Bonnie had stage two Hodgkin’s Lymphoma – a cancer that originates from a specific type of white blood cells called lymphocytes.

“She was 10 [and] had to start treatment straight away; she did around five months on chemo,” Jeannie-Marie said.

Fast forward almost two years, and Bonnie is living as normally as she can, despite the pandemic forcing her family into lockdown.

While she has since been cancerfree, there is a small chance it can come back. On Saturday 4 July, Bonnie and her family, based in Cessnock, will ‘Camp in’ to raise funds for a charity that helped them get through their battle.

A new initiative is calling on the community to help change the cancer story for children and their families.

Residents across the Hunter will camp from home to support Camp Quality next month.

In 2018, then 10-year-old Bonnie Hunter was faced with a fight most kids her age could not even imagine.

“We went swimming and we noticed she had a lump on her neck,” mum Jeannie-Marie said.

“And, after a couple of rounds of antibiotics, we went to see the paediatrician and he said we’d go into surgery tomorrow to get the lump removed and tested.

“After the surgery, in the time it took us to leave and pick up our

Camp Quality Chief Executive Deborah Thomas said they needed help now more than ever.

cover story Push for trail of tourists Hundreds of mountain bike riders descending on Dungog to leave a trail of dust around first-class tracks.

For the volunteer organisation MTB Dungog, this is no longer just a pipe dream.

“Over the June long weekend, we had about 600 riders,” MTB Dungog spokesperson, Chloe Chick, tells Newcastle Weekly.

“Dungog Common has never experienced that before.”

The common is 650 acres of communal recreational reserve on the western edge of the town in the Hunter Region.

It provides opportunities for horse riding, trail running and bushwalking, and a Landcare group.

Mountain bike riding, arguably its biggest attraction, boasts 22 kilometres of single track, a recently developed 1.2-kilometre flow track, and a purpose-built fun track.

A green flow track, aimed at beginner riders, is also expected to open in the next six weeks, along with signage and an amenities facility with hot showers.

The influx of visitors has seen Dungog businesses rally together, with vouchers, cards, or coupons being hidden around the common to offer things like free schooners and coffees.

“We’re in a unique position because Dungog Common is strategically placed being only two kilometres from the railway station and the town,” Ms Chick says.

“Most of the visitors are coming for a day trip.

“But, as the common continues to create more recreational facilities, overnight visitation will be an enormous economic boost, not just for Dungog, but also the entire shire.

“Our whole philosophy is to work

One local business, Tinshed Brewery, reportedly saw a 30% increase in trade in the fortnight after the flow track opened in March.

While the impact of COVID-19 subsequently put a halt to the town’s tourism push, Ms Chick hopes visitors will return in droves.

“There isn’t a business that can’t engage with [Dungog Common],” she says.

“Someone in Newcastle could book their car in for a service or a tyre change in Dungog while they are out for a ride.

“Teenagers could also jump on the train, mountain bike all day, and return home in the afternoon.”

Stacks of kindness You often find out the true value of people when the chips are down, so the saying goes.

During a time of “madness for everyone”, Newcastle-based businesses and individuals donated more than 2,500 meals, over $5,000 in vouchers, 500 bottles of hand

sanitiser, and a bunch of grocery items and baked goods.

Newy Burger Co spearheaded the 12-week initiative that provided much-needed support and kindness for those who were struggling amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

“We have always done a large

batch of soup every week to help Soul Café Newcastle with what they do,” owner Ben Neil explains.

“During that first doomsday weekend when everyone was shutting down, we were like: ‘We’re going to keep trading and see how we go.’

“Soul Café had to shut their dining room, so we started doing soups ourselves and breads and that turned into people wanting to sponsor batches of soup to help.”

From there, people started to come and pick up kindness boxes.

“They were people who had been hit financially by COVID, people with friends in healthcare, or elderly neighbours,” Ben says.

“There was no judgement from us – no-one had to come and explain why they wanted it or what the justification was.”

Apart from distributing the kindness boxes, hundreds of Coles shopping cards were also handed out, while businesses rallied to such an extent that they were able to provide enough food to feed a

family of four for a week.

“People were so giving in a time when it was madness for everyone,” Ben says.

“Newcastle always gets behind its own.”

With demand for the kindness boxes dropping off, Newy Burger Co has resumed making its weekly soup for Soul Café.

Ben hopes people will continue to support local businesses that chose to give during a time when many struggled to stay open.

“When you’re coming back to dine and go out or get take away, maybe think about these businesses that, during tough times, have gone above and beyond and given to help others,” he says.

“And, not for any credit – a lot of the restaurants didn’t want any exposure for it.”

Makes 8 1 Tbsp oil 1 brown onion, chopped 560g green jackfruit in brine,drained and rinsed Smoky barbecue satay sauce 1-2 Tbsp chilli paste (optional) 8 burger buns Salad vegetables Coleslaw

Heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat and cook the onion for about 5 minutes, until soft. Add 250ml (1 cup) water, the jackfruit and smoky barbecue satay sauce, and stir well. Reduce the heat to medium-low and cook, covered, for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Preheat the oven to 200°C and grease a baking tray or line it with baking paper.

Using a spatula, mash and pull the jackfruit into stringy strips so that it resembles pulled pork. Season with chilli paste, if using, and salt and pepper. Spread the pulled jackfruit evenly on the prepared tray and bake for 10–15 minutes, until golden brown. Toast the burger buns in the oven at the same time until golden brown. Fill the burger buns with the salad, top with jackfruit and serve.

Smoky barbecue satay sauce Start here for satay sauce: • 1 Tbsp coconut oil • 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped • 1/2 tsp onion powder • 1 tsp finely chopped lemongrass (white part only) • ½ tsp finely chopped chilli • 250g (1 cup) peanut butter • 80ml (1/3 cup) water • 1 Tbsp lime juice

To make smoky barbecue satay sauce add: • 60ml (1/4 cup) coconut milk • 60ml (1/4 cup) tomato sauce • 2 Tbsp molasses • 1 tsp raw sugar • 60g (1/4 cup) tomato paste • 1 tsp tamarind pulp

Museum excited to reopen its doors Newcastle Museum has welcomed back visitors this week as the City of Newcastle continues to reopen the city amid an easing of COVID-19 restrictions.

The museum restarted its operations on Tuesday, with three daily one-hour sessions being held between 9.30am and 1.30pm.

Each session will be capped at 45 people, with the restrictions designed to allow visitors to enjoy

many of the museum’s most popular attractions while still complying with the latest NSW Public Health Order.

Newcastle Museum Director Julie Baird said, while the facility’s interactive attractions would remain closed, in line with NSW guidelines, the museum still offered an entertaining and informative experience that provided an insight into Newcastle’s rich heritage.

“We’re so pleased to be able to open our doors and invite visitors back to Newcastle Museum,” she said.

“The public’s safety, and that of our team, is our top priority.

“So, we’ve had to make some changes in our exhibition spaces, as well as remove a lot of our interactive exhibitions, such as Supernova and Mininova, for now.

“There is still more to discover, from the FIRE! exhibition, A Newcastle Story, the popular BHP steelmaking simulation and the Cultural Resurgence and Kuueeyung exhibitions, which allow you to reflect on and absorb aspects of our rich local Aboriginal history and culture.”

The museum will open from Tuesday to Saturday each week.

Entry is free, however, online bookings via the website are required before visitors arrive.

The aptly-titled Flux exhibition began at an artists’ retreat at the North Stradbroke Island Research Centre in mid-2018.

Watt was part of a collective of nine artists, who came together to respond to the constant change in this unique ecosystem.

The retreat resulted in the Tidal exhibition at Redlands Regional Gallery in Cleveland, Queensland.

Watt’s silk installation was part of the show.

“I was taken by how fragile this island is,” she explains.

“It is put under constant stress by the taking of resources.”

Watt struggled to capture the beauty and diversity of the island ecosystem. She found a solution by stitching her silk using thread that had been rubbed over the surface of the watercolour studies she had created at the retreat.

“I had the pallet,” she said.

“I kept the sense of fragility at the front of my mind and the form began to take shape.”

Watt referenced the island’s human history by incorporating textiles found in nearby bushland.

They had blown there long before from a historic graveyard.

The work on display in the Flux exhibition is a continuation of this inspiration. It builds on the sense of fragility and changeability in the work, while changing the form in a state of flux.

It’s a bug’s life during winter Each year during winter I am surprised by how many bugs decide to visit, many of which may have been hiding and are now exposed as trees defoliate, exposing underplanting.

No doubt, as a result of recent rains, the snails are prevalent – they love freshly planted vegetables.

This year, many gardeners, encouraged by the time being spent at home, have planted herbs and vegetables for the first time.

Part of the secret to the elimination of snails is to throw pellets under nearby shrubs where they live a few days prior to planting.

This then introduces a new problem, although some brands indicate they are dog and cat safe – always read the fine print.

I’ve discovered a simple method. After your furry friends go in for the night, place the pellets on old saucers or lids around the garden bed and take them in before the dogs and cats go out in the morning.

Scale seems to be quite a problem this year, especially on dwarf box, camellias and lilypillies.

This should be sprayed with Malathon and

White Oil, remembering to work under the leaves, which is where most scales have attached.

A good indicator that a plant has scale is stickiness and black sooty mould.

The mould is a fungal disease carried by the ants when they climb the plant to suck on the discharge from the scale. This sooty mould is as damaging as the scale as it covers the leaves, restricting photosynthesis, and should be treated with Copper Oxychloride or Mancozeb plus.

Each problem should be treated separately and sprayed every 10 days until new growth is clean.

Although the winter rains are much needed, it can reveal drainage problems – if there is clay underneath the bed and it’s holding water, there is a great liquid clay breaker, which is easily applied.

Dolomite sprinkled around will help sweeten the soil, especially for roses which are already looking sad – don’t prune yet, wait until July or early August and, when they are pruned, spray with Lime Sulphur to clean up any fungal spores and give protection to the rose for a few months.

Lawns will definitely need work when spring arrives but, for now, apply lime as it will also

sweeten the soil and combat the soggy soil.

Back to the bugs – azaleas should be checked for spider mite. Although barely visible to the naked eye, there are indicators of invasion.

Leaves speckled with yellow, bronze or silver are a good warning.

THIS WEEK • Check with your local nursery to see which deciduous trees are in stock.

• Keep an eye on indoor plants that may be feeling the cold against a window.

• It is wise now to stop fertilising indoor plants – they like a rest during winter.
