This week...

From the editor The 75th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific (VP) Day was acknowledged at the weekend.

It commemorates Japan’s acceptance of the Allied demand for unconditional surrender on 14 August 1945.

For Australians, that meant the Second World War – the biggest and deadliest in history – was finally over.

The following day, 15 August, is usually referred to as VP Day. On VP Day 1945, the fledgling Clan McEwan Pipe Band heard a radio message announcing the end of war in the Pacific and marched for the first time from the family home in Paley Crescent, Belmont South, to the main street of Belmont to join the celebrations.

On Saturday, the band celebrated 75 years of family and community history, with four of the five generations present.

Three of its members grace the cover of this week’s magazine as we pay tribute to their contribution to the community for the past seven decades. Read more on pages 12 and 13.

Rural road fatalities made up two thirds of last year’s national road toll, with 835 people tragically losing their lives.

That is the alarming statistic driving this year’s Rural Road Safety Month campaign – a communitybased awareness initiative that calls on road users to jump in the driver’s seat of regional road safety.

In the Hunter Region, figures

show that more than 220 people were killed or injured in accidents on Cessnock roads in 2018/19, while 163 people were killed or injured in crashes in Lake Macquarie over the same period.

Lake Macquarie MP Greg Piper says the road crash fatality rate in the city is one-and-a-half times the state average.

“A lot of people are quick to

blame the roads, but speeding, drink and drug driving and fatigue remain the biggest killers on NSW roads,” he says.

“We’ve got to take ownership of that problem before more precious lives are lost.”

Australian Road Safety Foundation (ARSF) Chief Executive Russell White says the campaign is about educating “every single road user around the country that rural roads have risks”.

“The biggest issue out there is that more than two thirds of road toll happens on regional and remote roads,” he says.

“We need to make the community know that the keys to road safety rest in our hands as road users – it’s our choices and our behaviours that contribute to those incidents occurring or not occurring.”

foundation shows that one in five drivers are more likely to break the rules in rural areas.

It’s an issue that Mr White believes can only be changed by improving driver behaviour and community ownership.

He adds that, when driving in these areas, there are several things working against you and, while it may not seem like it, risks still exist.

“Roads aren’t as maintained,” he says.

“There are obstacles on the side of the road and help can be a long way away if you’re in a remote area.

“Complacency, familiarity and a mindset that [you can’t get caught] means people tend to push the boundaries.

“They’re all things that add up to it being a different risk space to what you would face on a busy highway.”

news Renowned Hunter doctor wins prestigious award Winning an award that recognises your work as being the best in the country is normally a reason to boast.

However, for Newcastle cancer researcher Dr Matthew Dun, it is just another tool to help improve the lives of sick children.

Dr Dun, a researcher from the University of Newcastle and the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI), was announced as the winner of the 2020 ‘Young Tall Poppy’ science award last week.

The prestigious annual award recognises the achievements of Australia’s outstanding young scientific researchers and communicators. Dr Dun was deemed a worthy winner for his dedication to improving cancer survival outcomes.

Despite being grateful for the recognition, Dr Dun said the award would help him continue the work he was deeply passionate about.

“I am honoured to receive this award, particularly given the calibre of those who have gone before me,” he said.

“As a recipient of this award, I’ll be even better placed to advocate for the importance of this research and continue to improve treatments for kids with cancer.”

Dr Dun, who focuses on cancers with poor outcomes, is one of only a handful of international researchers that conduct a technique called ‘quantitative phosphoproteomics’ in tumours.

It attempts to identify novel treatment targets and drug combinations to improve survival.

Dr Dun works with clinical and pharmaceutical industry partners to design tailored therapies.

“Cancers are not all the same, so the more precisely a drug can target tumour cells the more effective the therapy is and the fewer side effects patients will suffer,” he said.

Dr Dun’s research is helping to improve the outlook for children with brain cancer and will soon include clinical trials for leukaemia patients. His quest to find better cancer treatments is a very personal

pursuit for him and his family after he lost his daughter Josephine (‘Josie’) to brain cancer in December 2019. She was just four-years-old.

Dr Dun and his extended family have since formed the charity ‘Run DIPG’, which advocates for this rare cancer and raises much-needed funds for research into its treatment.

Dr Dun joins a broader alumni community of 800-plus scientists who have been acknowledged through the awards.

news Iconic Macquarie Pier set to receive $3 million facelift More than two centuries after its first foundation stone was laid, Newcastle’s iconic Macquarie Pier and harbourside walkway are set for a $3 million facelift.

The upgrades, which include a widened pathway, improved seating, maritime-style fencing and interpretive heritage features, will begin this month as part of a major improvement project by Port Authority of NSW. The revamp of the 900-metre route aims to create a destination spot that celebrates Newcastle’s maritime history and seamlessly complements the Bathers Way coastal walk.

Built as a breakwater, Macquarie Pier connects the mainland and Nobbys Head while providing a safe passage for ships entering the

Hunter River.

The site’s original foundation stone was laid on 5 August 1818

by Governor Lachlan Macquarie, before being built using convict labour.

Port Authority’s Head of Operations, Newcastle and North Coast, Emma Fensom, said the foot of Nobbys Head would create a gathering space for visitors to relax, enjoy a coffee from mobile cafes and watch the activity of the working port.

“Macquarie Pier has provided safe passage for ships entering Newcastle Harbour for over 200 years and has been integral in developing Newcastle into the city it is today,” she said.

“Macquarie Pier is a link between Newcastle’s past and present and

Librarians’ valuable service For some people, holding down a job is a reason to celebrate.

So, imagine having the same job for 50 years. That’s a reality for Olga McTackett, who is a familiar face for anyone visiting one of Maitland’s library services.

Olga started with Maitland City Council in 1970 as a library assistant and was recognised for her service to the community when she received the NSW Service Medallion in a

ceremony at Parliament House.

“There’s not a day where I haven’t wanted to go to work,” she said.

“I love the people I work with and the library has been a big part of my life.”

But Olga isn’t the only person marking a special occasion – fellow staff member Peter Woodley has also racked up 40 years with the Maitland City Library team.

New wheels A brand-new car is set to help brain cancer sufferers across the Newcastle and Hunter regions.

The Mark Hughes Foundation welcomed the unveiling of the Toyota Corolla last week.

The car will allow the foundation’s Brain Cancer Care Coordinators (BCCCs) – who provide support for patients and families from diagnosis, through treatment, to discharge or end-of-life care – to expand their faceto-face services.

“The foundation employs two BCCCs in the Hunter New England Health District to help make the confusing and often frightening journey for brain cancer sufferers a little easier,” the charity’s founder, Mark Hughes, said.

“This funding has allowed us to purchase a dedicated car so the BCCCs can now expand their inperson visits to sufferers and their families.”

Belmont pipe band celebrates 75 years on VP Day When you meet Val McEwan, you can tell he is a man full of stories and, with a winning grin on his face, he’d tell you them all if he had time.

However, one of the 91-year-old’s favourite memories happened 75 years ago when he, alongside his brother Jock and father Dave, took to the streets of Belmont as a pipe band to celebrate the end of World War II. It was Victory in the Pacific (VP) Day and,

after hearing a radio announcement declaring the end of war, the Clan McEwan Pipe Band and Dancers was born.

“It was Jock, [dad] and myself and about six others and we started the band because the war was finished,” Val says.

“We turned around and we played here [at our home in Belmont South] and we went for a march up to Belmont after the radio

announcement.

“But we didn’t really need the announcement, [because] a lady down the back came racing down our street swinging her arms in the air [shouting] ‘the war is over, the war is over.’”

Val, who is the band’s patron and the only surviving original member, played the bagpipes and bass drum.

of his life for as long as he can remember.

“My father came out from Scotland and he brought his bagpipes with him in 1911 and they built a two-storey house [on our block],” Val says.

“The passageway went right down to the back there and Jock used to practice up and down that passageway.”

Val says it is hard to pick a favourite moment “because they have all been special”.

The Clan McEwan Pipe Band marked the milestone with a small gathering at the weekend.

Pipe Major and daughter-inlaw to Jock, Annette McEwan, says that, while COVID-19 cancelled their initial plans, they still celebrated and plan to host a larger event “when the world settles down again”.

“All we [wanted] to do was mark the occasion,” she says.

“Val really enjoyed the day and we all felt a sense of pride and joy

about being part of the band.

“We did have a little bit of a sad moment though, missing Jock – he would have been so proud.”

The band, including four out of the five generations, gathered at the original family home on Saturday, had a photo shoot, and played a brief 15-minute set for Val. To be extra safe, Annette made McEwan tartan face masks, and the photos taken will serve as a reminder of this time in their history.

The group makes regular appearances at Anzac Day ceremonies and other celebrations.

Moving forward, Annette is hopeful about the band’s future.

“Our family will always be playing instruments,” she says.

“We’re not looking like we’ll finish anytime soon.”

Newcastle clung on to claim a nail-biting 26-24 win over old rivals Manly at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Sea Eagles hit the lead in the third minute through a moment of brilliance from five-eighth Cade Cust. The 21-year-old somehow produced a grubber kick into the in-goal while flirting with the touchline, and then beat the

Prep: 20 mins, plus cooling, chilling and standing time Cook: 40 mins Serves 6 1 red onion, quartered 400g tinned chopped tomatoes 1/2 quantity korma paste 700g chicken tenderloins 500g orange sweet potatoes, peeled and chopped 100g baby spinach leaves Chopped coriander, to serve Cooked basmati rice, to serve

Add the onion to the mixer bowl, measuring cup in. Chop for 10 sec/speed 7. Scrape down the side of the bowl.

Add the tomatoes to the mixer bowl, measuring cup in.

Cook for 5 min/100°C/speed 1.

Transfer the mixture to a large, deep, heavy-based frying pan over medium heat. Add the paste, chicken and sweet potato to the pan. Stir until the mixture comes to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer gently, stirring occasionally, for 15 minutes or until cooked and the sauce is reduced slightly. Remove from the heat, cool the mixture in the pan. Add the spinach and stir to combine, then cover with a lid.

Transfer the pan to the fridge and chill for up to 2 days.

To serve, remove the pan from the fridge and leave to stand for 10 minutes. Reheat the mixture in the pan over medium–low heat for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally and adding a little water if needed to loosen, or until heated. Serve sprinkled with the coriander, and the rice alongside.

To make the sofrito: Place all ingredients in a food processor and process to a pesto consistency.

Heat a 30cm frypan or paella pan on high heat. Add sofrito and cook until tomatoes start to become juicy, 3-4 minutes. Add field mushrooms, mushroom stock and bring to the boil.

Sprinkle in rice and reduce to a medium heat. Continue cooking for about 16-18 minutes. Do not stir!

When rice is tender and liquid has almost fully reduced (there should still be some liquid in the paellapan), cook for a further 2 minutes to achieve ‘soccarrada’ (crust on the bottom of the pan).

Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper and garnish with chives, thinly sliced button mushrooms, radish and grated manchego cheese. Squeeze over lemon juice just before serving.

Angela Holden had spent more than a decade working in pharmacy when she suddenly decided to embark on a career change.

Keeping the laughs rolling Big Dog Comedy boss Andrew Milos is finding new ways to keep the laughs rolling in Newcastle.

After the second of his planned annual comedy festivals was cancelled earlier this year, the self-professed “comedy nerd” has joined forces with the city’s central events hub to offer a remedy for the “iso blues”.

Newcastle’s iconic Civic Theatre will present Civic Comedy Club this Saturday 22 August at 6:30pm and 9:30pm.

The 70-minute show will showcase a collection of Australian comedians, hand-picked by Milos to continue bringing humour to Novocastrian audiences.

“Yes, it’s our product, and we’ve teamed up with the Civic Theatre team to keep the laughs going in 2020,” he said.

“I’d keep an eye out for Neel Kolhatkar and, of course, Cam Knight.”

The event’s line-up includes Cam Knight, Daniel Muggleton, Neel Kolhatkar, Nina Oyama and Floyd Alexander-Hunt.

Audience numbers will be capped to comply with social distancing requirements and manage the flow of patrons through the venue, with an initial limit of 150 people in the theatre.

The audience will enter via the loading dock to enjoy an intimate comedy club experience with the venue serving from its light menu.

Milos’ Newcastle Comedy Festival has been rescheduled to November 2020.

Tickets are still sold through the Civic Theatre website.

Competition nurtures art and culture Lake Macquarie’s cultural collection is set to receive a boost as a new $25,000 national art prize rolls into town.

The theme of this year’s competition is ‘Where There Is Water’ and Museum of Art and Culture (MAC) Director, Debbie Abraham, said judges would be looking for works that reflected the theme, either directly or in more conceptual ways.

“With MAC situated on the lake foreshore, it’s perhaps not surprising that water is an ongoing theme in our exhibition programming and collection development,” Ms Abraham said.

“In working with the theme, we want artists to not only embrace notions of location, but to explore water as a metaphor or narrative.”

Artists working across all mediums, including sculpture, painting, drawing, photography, installation and sound, are eligible for the prize.

“This is a fantastic way to not only encourage and celebrate art, but to grow our city’s cultural collection,” Ms Abraham said.

Lake Macquarie City Council Manager Arts, Culture and Tourism, Jacqui Hemsley, said the Lake Art Prize would be a biennial competition open to artists aged 18 and over.

“This is an acquisitive art prize, so the winning artist will have their work purchased by council, up to the value of $25,000,” she said.

Time to reflect as spring draws near There’s only 11 days left until spring.

Before winter is over, reflect on your garden and consider what could be planted to improve the garden’s structure.

Are trees needed to provide a canopy and, more importantly, shade?

Before purchasing new trees, there are a few points to consider – find out the mature height and width of a tree before buying.

When the tree is fully grown, where will its shadow fall and will it obstruct overhead power lines. Average-sized gardens can only comfortably accommodate two or three large trees.

Any garden plans should involve decisions about evergreen and deciduous trees.

Evergreens are invaluable in basic planning as a screen, whereas deciduous trees provide autumn foliage.

Some display spring blossoms at times, as well as having the ability to supply shade to a specific area of the house during summer, while letting light in during winter.

It is important to blend both deciduous and

evergreen trees, noting that this type of structure isn’t achieved overnight.

From time to time, you will remove plants that have lost their interest or haven’t achieved what was originally planned for them.

Garden planning can be simplified.

Theoretically, trees should be used towards the back of the garden because of their height and they will provide a backdrop for shrubs and flowers.

Don’t overlook citrus as they are excellent for screening and are perfect as specimens in the garden and they are, of course, evergreen.

Below is a brief list of trees beginning with evergreens that perform well in the Hunter, remembering though, to consider any climatic conditions peculiar to our area such as a frost or salt.

Evergreens (don’t lose leaves) – Acacias (wattles), eucalypts (smaller growing varieties), Lilly Pilly, Magnolia Little Gem and Teddy Bear. Tuckeroo, Cypress Naylors Blue and Leightons Green.

Deciduous (leaves drop in autumn) – Jacaranda, Acers, Crepe Myrtle, Ash, and Crab Apples.
