This week...

From the editor It was great to see so many people smiling and enjoying the warm weather over the long weekend. My brother and I went for a day trip to the Central Coast to visit my dad on Sunday.

As I’ve mentioned in previous columns, it’s the simple things that I have been appreciating more this year.

We grabbed a coffee near the beach, walked up a hill to look out over the city, and had a delicious lunch before heading home.

Then, on Monday afternoon, we joined hundreds of others at Bar Beach to soak up the sunshine and have a swim. I hope the time off left you and your family feeling refreshed and ready to tackle the last few months of a crazy year.

We’re extending the JobKeeper Payment until 28 March 2021.

The Australian Government is extending the temporary JobKeeper Payment to the end of March 2021. From 28 September, businesses must meet the turnover test and submit their declarations by the 14th of each month.

There will be two new payment rates – one for those who work more than 20 hours per week in the relevant period, and another for those who work less. The employee eligibility date has also changed to 1 July, meaning some businesses could claim for more staff.

It’s part of our plan to keep business in business, and Australians in jobs.

news Laundry builds connections It may be a chore for some, but, for Orange Sky volunteer Jacqui Dann, washing is a way of connecting with those in need.

As a member of the charitable group, which provides access to washing machines, dryers, warm showers and genuine conversation to those experiencing homelessness, Jacqui says the task itself is simply a biproduct.

“Washing is just an excuse to show you care,” she said.

“It’s about listening and being genuinely interested in another human being.

“The orange chairs are more important than the machines.”

The chairs, bright orange in colour, are the tools for what the group likes to call “genuine, nonjudgemental conversation with friends”.

While the machines mounted

in the vans wash loads in order of arrival, Jacqui and her fellow volunteers lend an ear to anyone who feels like a chat.

Last weekend marked the group’s final Sudsy Challenge, a call-to-arms that asks supporters to wear the same clothes for consecutive days to raise awareness of the plight of one in 200 Australians experiencing homelessness.

This year, the three-day challenge took place across four weekends, from 3 September to 4 October.

Having completed 3,165 loads of washing and provided 6,277 hours of genuine conversation since its arrival in Newcastle in 2017, the Sudsy Challenge is a way of recognising need within the Hunter.

volunteers was down, the need was no less than he’d experienced during the three years he’d been with the not-for-profit group.

“We had 240 shifts pre-COVID and now it’s down to 150,” he said.

“We also had nine vans in operation and that’s down to just the one right now.”

The Orange Sky van will visit the Swansea Community Cottage each Thursday between 11am and 1pm.

news Plans unveiled for precinct at John Hunter Hospital NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian made a flying visit to Newcastle last week to reveal plans for a $780 million John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct.

Ms Berejiklian was joined by NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard in unveiling the concept design for the new, seven-storey Acute Services Building.

“World-class services here help so many in the Hunter Region and that’s why I’m incredibly proud of this investment,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“Construction of the precinct will support more than 3,000 jobs over the life of the project, helping stimulate the economy, a key component of the NSW Government’s COVID-19 recovery plan.”

Mr Hazzard said the project would significantly increase critical

care capacity, with a 60% boost in the Intensive Care Unit capacity and almost 50% more theatres, interventional suites, and procedural spaces.

“The government’s vision for this site is a major world-class centre that will actually service not only Newcastle but the entire Hunter Region and right up to almost the NSW border as a major trauma centre,” he said.

The Acute Services Building will include a new emergency department, critical care services, operating theatres, interventional and imaging services, birthing suite and inpatient maternity unit, neonatal intensive care and special care nursery, larger and redeveloped inpatient units, and a rooftop helipad.

a major catalyst as an innovation, research and industry centre for world-class health,” Mr Hazzard said.

Hunter New England Health Executive Director, Dr Paul Craven, said it would allow the hospital to continue its strong reputation.

“We have one of the largest trauma services, one of the largest emergency departments and one of the largest and busiest theatre complexes, so it’s a fantastic addition to what we already have,” he said.

news Hollywood heartthrob helps release Tasmanian Devils For the first time in 3,000 years, the Tasmanian Devil is back living in the wild on mainland Australia, providing an historic moment for wildlife lovers across the country.

With the help of Hollywood celebrity Chris Hemsworth and his wife Elsa Pataky, local conservation organisation Aussie Ark released 11 devils into a 400-hectare wildlife sanctuary in the Barrington Tops.

“In 100 years, we are going to be looking back at this day as the day that set-in motion the ecological restoration of an entire country,” Aussie Ark President Tim Faulkner said.

“Not only is [it] the reintroduction of one of Australia’s beloved animals, but of an animal that will engineer the entire environment around it, restoring and rebalancing

our forest ecology after centuries of devastation from introduced foxes and cats and other invasive predators.

“Because of this reintroduction and all of the hard work leading up to it, someday we will see Tasmanian Devils living throughout the great eastern forests as they did 3,000 years ago.”

The project is vital to Tasmanian Devil conservation, with only 25,000 left in the Tasmanian wilderness after a contagious cancer decimated around 90% of the population.

WildArk co-founder Mark Hutchinson said the reintroduction was laying the groundwork to “rewild” Australia.

The animals will be monitored through regular surveys, radio collars fitted with transmitters, and camera traps.

Over the next two years, Aussie Ark will introduce more devils to the wild, with plans to do two additional releases of 20 devils each.

Baby Teina has thrived since entering the world via emergency c-section at 25 weeks.

Stacey Cameron was just 19 weeks pregnant with her sixth child when her waters broke.

That meant a long hospital stay until her baby girl came along, leaving five children with ages ranging from 21 to two at home.

“My husband and two older children, I don’t know what they did, but they sorted it out

(running the household),” Ms Cameron said.

“I couldn’t believe it even if I saw it.”

Baby Teina entered the world via emergency c-section five weeks later at 25 weeks.

“The delivery was all good but obviously her lungs weren’t developed, she was quite underdeveloped, her skin was see through, you could see her heart pumping through her chest, but she didn’t need to be resuscitated,” Ms Cameron said.

Little Teina spent 100 days in John Hunter Children’s Hospital, before she was moved to Maitland Hospital for a few extra weeks.

It was a challenging time for Ms Cameron, who still gets emotional talking about the time she was separated from her baby.

“I’d wake up thinking of her and go to sleep thinking of her,” she said.

“It was hard to be away from her every day.”

Despite developing a virus, Teina’s first few months in the world were smooth sailing.

“She showed me how babies are just so strong and it’s unreal what they can do, and what the world can expose them to and how

fast they can get rid of it, and fight it.”

After so many days in hospital, Teina stole some hearts and received a little extra TLC. “My daughter was absolutely spoilt rotten by every single nurse that looked after her,” Ms Cameron said.

“Leaving her was hard but I felt comfortable knowing she was in great hands.

“When she was finally allowed to have cuddles, I’d walk in at 8.30 in the morning and the nurses would be checking on other babies, holding her.

“And the doctors, when they did rounds, they’d pick her up, they spoilt her with love up there and I appreciated every one of them.”

When Teina was ready, she was sent home, where she was welcomed with open arms by her brothers and sisters.

“It was amazing to take her home, there was a lot of love and a lot of tears,” Ms Cameron said.

“Because the young ones never saw her, but only saw pictures, they’re very close to her and very good helpers.”

COVID nasal spray on way Newcastle-based respiratory researchers have played an integral role in developing a new preventative nasal spray treatment that may protect people from COVID-19 infection and prevent transmission.

The treatment, INNA-051, by Australian biotech company Ena Respiratory, was developed to boost the natural human immune system to fight common colds and flu in the nose and throat to prevent severe lung disease. Research published last week in the biomedical prepublication research site, medRxiv, shows it reduced viral replication and shedding in the nose and throat by up to 96% in a gold-standard COVID-19 animal study led by Public Health England’s (PHE) deputy director, Professor Miles Carroll.

University of Newcastle Associate Professor, Nathan Bartlett, who is also head of the Hunter Medical

Research Institute (HMRI)’s Viral Immunology and Respiratory Disease group, is one of the Ena Respiratory’s key advisors and research collaborators. “The proof of concept data generated by HMRI’s team was instrumental in ensuring the treatment was ideally placed to be tested against the virus that causes COVID-19,� he said.

If successful in clinical trials, INNA-051 will complement the protection provided by vaccines, particularly in groups in which a vaccine is likely to be less effective, such as the elderly and those with chronic lung disease.

Subject to successful toxicity studies and regulatory approval, Ena Respiratory could be ready to test INNA-051 in human trials in less than four months. The company says it will be a self-administered nasal spray that is easy to manufacture.

Illegal dumper convicted An 18-month investigation into illegal dumping has led to the conviction of a serial offender responsible for three illegal dumps across the Lake Macquarie and Central Coast regions.

A 43-year-old man from Sefton, Western Sydney, was convicted on three charges of dumping at Toronto Local Court last week.

The man was fined $60,000 and ordered to pay $30,000 in clean-up costs to Lake Macquarie City and Central Coast councils. “The fact that someone thinks they can dump tonnes of asbestoscontaminated waste on a public street and get away with it is just outrageous,� Regional Illegal Dumping (RID) Coordinator, Rob Robertson, said. “As this case shows, no matter how long it takes, we will keep working until we find those responsible. This was a significant pollution incident and the person

responsible showed a complete disregard for both community safety and the law.�

The Hunter/Central Coast RID Squad began investigating in February 2019 after 10 tonnes of contaminated demolition waste was found dumped on Marconi Road in Morisset. Among the waste, which had clearly been affected by fire before being dumped, investigators uncovered a distinctly patterned linoleum, commonly known as ‘lino’.

Similar material was found dumped at Catherine Hill Bay and at Calga on the Central Coast, which suggested to investigators that the culprit was a serial offender.

Through viewing CCTV footage, door knocking, and analysing the crime scene, in contingence with building fires across the region, investigators were able to identify a site in Mann Street, Gosford, as the waste’s origin.

cover story Taking a positive step to support Camp Quality It’s not so much about the distance covered, but the reason behind it.

Families facing cancer are isolated now more than ever, with compromised immune systems meaning every germ is a serious threat, not just COVID-19.

When Australia’s isolation finally ends, stress and anxiety will still be a constant presence for Camp Quality families.

In a bid to help, the national charity has launched an inaugural COVID-safe challenge, which is raising much-needed funds for children facing cancer.

The Big Walk for Little Kids asks everyday Australians to lace up their joggers and cover a total of 25, 50 or 100 kilometres this month.

Newcastle’s Maddy Bartlett says she decided to sign up after

discovering the pandemic’s impact on Camp Quality’s fundraising efforts.

“I’ve been a volunteer with Camp Quality for three years and I know how hard it is to get fundraising at the moment with COVID and everything,” she says.

“So, doing the walk is just that little bit of extra help.”

Maddy, who has set a minimum fundraising target of $500, plans to walk at least 100 kilometres before the end of October.

She says the event will aid Camp Quality’s services and programs for children aged 0 to 13, who are either dealing with their own diagnosis or supporting a brother, sister, mum, or dad.

“I worked in camps when I was overseas and then remembered how

much I loved going to them as a kid and wanted to get back into that kind of work,” Maddy says.

“I saw Camp Quality and know how awesome it is to get the kids out and give them a break from what they are doing – to let them be kids again.”

Camp Quality Chief Executive Deborah Thomas adds COVID-19 has been particularly difficult for kids and families facing cancer.

“Big Walk for Little Kids has been created in line with the ever-

evolving and varied restrictions in each state,” she says.

“Australians anywhere can get involved and walk throughout the month of October in many different ways – on the treadmill, outdoors, as an individual, with a friend, or as part of a virtual team.”

A rescue crew has been rewarded for its extraordinary efforts after a treacherous mission off Newcastle’s coast last year.

The Westpac 1 Rescue Helicopter

Crew received the Professional Commendation Award at the 2020 Australian Search and Rescue Awards last week.

Pilot Graeme Anderson, who has worked for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service since 2002, said it was an honour to receive the recognition.

“I’m a little bit surprised,” he said.

“It’s an honour to be awarded like this – it wasn’t expected at all.

“At the end of the day we were doing the job we are highly trained to do.”

He added that, even though it was a tough rescue, it was not the worst he had faced.

On Thursday 11 July 2019, Mr Anderson, alongside Air Crewman Officer Sean Flanagan, Paramedic Sean Vallance and Doctor Tim Starkey, were tasked to a beacon search after a distress signal

was detected 25 kilometres off Newcastle’s coast.

The crew battled severe weather conditions, which involved swells of up to five metres, cold water temperatures, high cloud base cover, and intense winds travelling up to 30 knots.

The distress signal from the vessel was first detected by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority at about 10am that morning, and the crew arrived at the scene 45 minutes later.

Five people were located in the water beside an upturned catamaran.

Paramedic Sean Vallance was then winched down beside the upturned vessel in high seas and very rough swell to rescue the passengers.

He retrieved two survivors via an accompanied winch extraction and

also found three other people next to the yacht who were deceased.

“The conditions were pretty bad out there, but we did what we had to do and we managed to save two people, a father and daughter,” Mr Anderson said.

“Being in daylight, we knew we could get in there and we could save them and get back to dry land.”

Mr Anderson said, while it was nice to be acknowledged, paramedic Sean Vallance deserved the most recognition because he had the hardest task of all.

“Sean Vallance, who was the paramedic, was the one who went in the water and had to deal with it all,” he said.

“He actually had the hard task of rescuing the survivors.

“At the end of the day, Sean should have all of the recognition.”

Holmesville group chimes in with bright farewell West Wallsend resident Paul Lindsay says the Holmesville Improvement Committee managed to hit the right note through its 75 years of service to the community.

After officially disbanding, the charitable group, which was established in the early 1900s, has once again found a fine-tuned way of continuing its legacy.

Leaving its remaining funds to Mr Lindsay’s West Wallsend District Sustainable Neighbourhood Group, the two organisations have added a set of musical chimes to its major project, the Holmesville Community Garden.

The stainless steel and aluminium “PentaPost C” chimes in five bright colours, complete with a rubber mallet, were unveiled to the public last month.

Mr Lindsay said the unique public musical instrument was a gift that would keep on giving.

“It’s suitable for the outdoors and it’s robust,” he said.

“I’m hopeful kids will enjoy it for years to come.

“It is also tuned to middle-C as not to be a bother to the neighbours either.”

Together with a commemorative plaque, the chimes were presented to the former members as a public acknowledgement of the town’s gratitude for the work of its many volunteers over the years.

The Holmesville Improvement Committee had worked with Lake Macquarie City Council and other authorities to improve facilities within the area since its formation.

It also liaised with the council for it to provide Holmesville Sports Ground and Skate Park with playground equipment, tar sealing of roads, kerb and guttering, and general maintenance work in the suburb.

At one stage, it was also heavily involved in the Holmesville Tennis Club, managed the hiring of the community hall, and helped organise the Holmesville Centenary Celebrations in 1998.

It was forced to officially disband due to the ever-increasing age of its members and a lack of new volunteers.

sport Pickleball serving up a challenge on global stage Save the date: Saturday 10 October is World Pickleball Day. What is pickleball you ask?

A cross between ping-pong, badminton and tennis, it is the fastest growing sport in America and local advocate Tony Morgan says it is attracting more than its fair share of attention right here in the Hunter.

Pickleball, which boasts more than three million players in the US, was imported to Australia just five years ago and quickly began to make a name for itself on courts throughout the region.

Newcastle venues will join others across the globe this month in an international day spent celebrating the sport.

While its current players are predominantly in the over-55s age

bracket, Tony says the demographic is changing.

“It’s taking off in Newcastle, every week it’s attracting new players of all ages,” he said.

“In Florida it’s very popular with the over 55s because it’s easier on the body. It attracts a lot of extennis players who want the same challenge but have found the body can’t keep up.

“Basically, anywhere there’s badminton courts, you can introduce it. Some lifestyle villages are even including purpose-built pickleball courts in their building plans.”

Pickleball is played on a badminton-sized court with paddles and a perforated plastic ball, which is hit over a net.

However, co-founder Barney McCallum claims the game was officially named after a Cocker Spaniel ‘Pickles,’ who would chase

the ball and run off with it.

Regardless of the historical discrepancies, Rathmines resident and pickleball player Kris Jepsen says the game is thrilling.

“I’m 75 now and I play three times a week,” she said.

“It’s fun, it’s exercise and it’s company, and I love it.”

After COVID-19 destroyed hopes of Newcastle hosting the Pickleball National Championships this year, the former steel city will welcome the opportunity in October 2021.

Sporting history on show From legendary boxer Les Darcy to rally car driver Ken Tubman, Maitland’s list of sporting heroes is long and illustrious.

A new exhibition will showcase the city’s athletic prowess while also highlighting the development and success of many clubs.

Winning Isn’t Everything: A History of Maitland Sport is open until Sunday 13 December.

Maitland Regional Museum representative Janece McDonald says the exhibition focuses on sport in the 19th Century.

“Maitland is chock full of sporting champions at all levels – Olympians, world, state, and national,” Ms McDonald says.

“We’re trying to show Maitland sport is not just Les Darcy and rugby league, there are a plethora of clubs, each encouraging participation.

“The exhibition showcases 19th Century sport, how clubs have evolved, and what they provide today – competition, fitness, and 18

friendships.” The exhibition includes a section on rugby league legend Terry Pannowitz, who played a club record 270 games for the Maitland Pickers and was a multiple premiership-winning captain-coach, playing for Newcastle, Country NSW, and Australia.

It also features a display on Ken Tubman, who spent his entire life in Maitland and will be remembered as one of Australia’s most successful rally drivers.

Tubman won the original Australian Redex Trial – a trip of more than 10,000 kilometres across the country – in 1953 alongside codriver John Marshall. The duo drove a ’53 Peugeot 203. “[The exhibition] highlights some individuals, like Ken Tubman – his overalls have never been on display before – and Col Johnston, who was ‘Mr Cricket’ in Maitland, as well as the city’s swimming clubs – Maitland Swimming Club is 80-years-old – and the bowling

clubs, which do a lot for sport here,” Ms McDonald says.

“There’s also an interesting history with rowing – way back in the 1800s, regattas were held year after year until the club’s demise in the 1890s.

“It then started up again in the 1920s before dying off in the 1930s and was restored by Hunter Valley Grammar [School] in the 1990s.”

collaboration between Maitland Regional Museum, The Clothing Museum, East Maitland Bowling Club and Easts Leisure and Golf.

Preheat oven to 170°C. Grease and line base and side of a 22cm (base) springform cake pan.

Cook: 60 mins Serves 8 225g butter, softened 3 large ripe Cavendish bananas, peeled, halved lengthways 1 cup firmly packed brown sugar 3 eggs 200g dark chocolate, melted 1 1/2 cups self-raising flour 2 Tbsp cocoa powder 1/2 cup milk

200g unsalted butter 400g plain biscuits 2 cups McKenzie’s fine desiccated coconut 2 lemons, rind finely grated 2 Tbsp (40ml) fresh lemon juice Lemon Icing 2 cups icing sugar 40g butter, softened 2 1/2 Tbsp lemon juice (approximately 1 lemon) 3/4 cup McKenzie’s shredded coconut Grease and line a 3cm-deep, 15.5cm x 25cm slab pan with 3cm overhang

Spoon cake batter over the bananas and smooth the surface.

Fudge sauce

For the sauce, combine the cream and chocolate in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Cook, stirring with a metal spoon until melted and smooth. Drizzle some of the warm sauce over the cake. Cut into pieces and serve with cream and remaining sauce.

1 cup sweetened condensed milk

Combine sugar and remaining butter in food processor. Process until combined. Add eggs one at a time, process until combined. Add melted chocolate and process, scraping down sides as required.

Transfer to a bowl, fold in the combined sifted flour and cocoa, then the milk.

Bake for 50-60 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Stand for 30 minutes in pan. Turn onto a plate.

200g dark chocolate, chopped

Serves 12

Melt 25g of the butter in a large frying pan over medium-high heat until foaming. Add the banana slices, cut side down. Cook for 1 minute until light golden, turn and cook further 30 seconds. Cool for 5 minutes then arrange bananas, cut side down over the base of the prepared pan.

Press biscuit mixture into prepared pan. Refrigerate for 1.5 hours or until firm.

To make lemon icing, place icing sugar, butter and lemon juice in a bowl. Beat with a wooden spoon until smooth.

Spread icing over slice. Top with coconut. Refrigerate for a further 30 minutes or until icing has set. Cut into pieces. Serve.

Fundraiser to cure Bali blues COVID-19 travel restrictions have left many dreaming of an island escape, so Newcastle-based organisation Corethics has come up with an alternative to help people through their Bali blues.

The social enterprise will host its third annual film fundraiser event on Saturday 24 October, with films from Australian and Indonesian filmmakers, where all the proceeds will be donated to support access to clean water in Bali, Indonesia.

The event will screen the ReelOzInd! Short Film Festival, a short film competition featuring rising filmmakers.

McCabe said that, by attending the event, you would be supporting Australian and Indonesian filmmakers while also raising funds for the water crisis in Bali.

“Tourism accounts for around 65% of the water use in Bali and us Aussies are in the top three most frequent flyers to the Island of the Gods,” McCabe said.

“For all those Novocastrians who have had the pleasure of visiting Bali, now is the time for us to give back.

“During this global pandemic, access to clean water has never been more important.”

Celebrity chef teams up with Maitland Libraries The people of Maitland are about to get a step closer to meeting Nigella Lawson.

The food writer and celebrity chef has signed on to take part in Maitland Libraries’ ‘Look Who’s Talking’ program as it moves online.

Manager of Libraries and Learning, Keryl Collard, said the change to an online platform due to COVID-19 meant the program was able to attract big names.

“Current circumstances are reshaping the way we interact with each other and the rest of the world,” Collard said.

“We now have the opportunity to engage with authors in different countries and bring them to Maitland.

“The ‘Look Who’s Talking’

program has been connecting the community with great speakers and new ideas for over a decade, and exciting new partnerships are enabling Maitland Libraries to deliver world-class events and sought after speakers.”

Lawson will share her cooking wisdom and talk about the publication of her latest book, ‘Cook, Eat, Repeat’ on Thursday 5 November.

Port Stephens’ local identity John Clarke is inspecting a donated oyster barge he hopes to display if his museum dream comes to light.

History buffs keen for Port Stephens hub Port Stephens was once home to the world’s largest oyster farm, the training ground for 20,000 American and Australian soldiers under General MacArthur, and the site of Bert Hinkler’s crash landing.

It is its historical richness that is the driving force behind Tomaree Museum Association’s push to establish a museum within the coastal town.

The group will host a pop-up museum at Bob’s Farm in December.

The hope is that the temporary site will generate enough interest and lead to a permanent home for the collection of artefacts.

Group chairman Ian Farnsworth said the group’s aim was to develop a regional museum and interpretative centre “to document, protect and promote the history and changing natural environment of Port Stephens”.

“Port Stephens has such a rich history,” he said.

“We have mini museums but nothing that draws the history together under the one roof.

“We want to capture the whole lot in the one place.”

Farnsworth added that Port Stephens played a critical role in the defence of Australia’s east coast during World War II. “It was General McCarthy’s training ground for the Pacific War,” he said.

“They’d practice their beach landings here. The Catalina’s (flying boats) used to take off from Rathmines and train in Port Stephens.

“It was part of the practice of landing in rough seas.”

Sadly, Farnsworth said one did crash, sinking in the bay during the Second World War. “It’s still there,” he said.

“Bert Hinkler is another legendary aviator that features in Port Stephens’ history.

“He was forced to land his aircraft on the beach at Birubi Point in Anna Bay during a storm.

“It was badly damaged, so he got a team of horses together and dragged it all the way to Stockton.

“He took the wings off, put the plane on the ferry, and took it to Sydney.

“They’re all wonderful stories like this, I could go on for hours.

“That’s why we want to link it all together in the one place.”

Tomaree Museum Association members say, although they are passionate about piecing together information, they do need the community’s help.

“We’d love people to contact us if they have artefacts or old photos from the Port,” Farnsworth said.

“So far we’ve got a committee, we’ve had grants approved and we’ve been busy collating information. This is the exciting part. But we are going to need $10 to $20 million to do it right.

“It’s a virtual museum at the moment but we’d love to put the full scope of Port Stephens’ history on display.”

How have you maintained health and fitness during isolation?

I’ve worked out at home using my online fitness program TIFFXO.com.

The workouts are fun, achievable and fast (only 20 minutes). I recently launched my ISO RESET challenge which I developed to help motivate myself and others. A specific program designed to keep you fit and healthy in isolation; workouts you can do in your living room any time with just a pair or dumbbells or soup cans.

What’s been the most important aspect of this for you to focus on?

For me it has been controlling the ‘controllables’. I know I can’t control a pandemic, but I can control my nutrition, movement and mindset.

So, the most important part of this for me has been mindset. I’ve remained consistent with my workouts to give myself a much-needed endorphin boost and to increase the feel good hormone serotonin. I have eaten well to boost immunity and resilience. It’s been about keeping myself strong mentally and physically at a time when being healthy has never been more important.

How have you warded off the dreaded ‘iso skin?’

I haven’t. Gosh, my skin has been so congested and dry. I’ve taken a holistic approach of eating well, moving and sweating and then keeping my skincare super simple with a great cleanser and exfoliant to get rid of dead skin.

I also use a hydrating serum to boost hydration. I also drink lots of water.

What is your most important skincare step?

I think it’s drinking water. Water is

the most important thing to keep your skin hydrated and feeling plump. When I am dehydrated I find I get black rings under my eyes and my skin dries out very badly and gets flaky and pimply. What are your top tips for those wanting to keep active but avoid the gym (and keep their distance from others)?

I know it’s hard to find big chunks of time to work out but, if you can find just 10 minutes twice a day to work on your abs and posture, you will be stronger and standing taller before you know it. And, you’ll be a step ahead of everyone else before summer arrives.

Even just sitting up straight at your desk will help your core/abs and, in turn, your posture. Be aware and conscious of how you sit for long periods of time; it’s very easy to slump forward and roll your shoulders, and this can cause issues for your back, shoulders, neck and hips.

To help with your posture when sitting down for long periods try this: Sit up straight and lift your rib cage with a full breath in; Press your back flat against the back of the chair; Let your breath out slowly for a count of 3-5 seconds; and be mindful that your shoulders are not slumped forward.

Try this for five minutes and see how your posture has changed.

Workout: posture and abs

Warm up: 5 mins jogging or skipping.

20 x back rolls: Lying on your back, lift your knees to your chest and place your hands out to the side, palms flat on the ground. Keeping your shoulders flat to the ground, roll your knees from left to right.

20 x alternate twists (seated): While seated, put your feet together and raise them off the floor. Leaning back slightly, rotate your trunk from left to right.

Make it harder: Use a medicine ball Make it easier: Keep your feet on the ground.

20 x straight leg raise: Lying on your back, place your hands flat

on the ground by your side. Raise both legs from the ground up to 90 degrees, and lower back down to the count of 3-5.

1 min plank: Lie face down and elevate your body weight onto your elbows and toes, keeping your elbows under your shoulders, and hold!

20 x standing twist: Stand feet shoulder-width apart and bend your knees slightly. Place a broomstick over your shoulders with your hands holding on, and twist left to right.

20 x hanging knee raise: Hang with your arms straight and your feet off the ground. Raise your knees to hip height and lower back down.

Buzz around organic gardening Gardening organically has become popular, but how many gardeners truly understand this method of cultivation?

I’m often asked which plant to grow to keep away whatever pest, but this kind of garden practice goes hand-in-hand with organic concepts, which means not using chemicals.

Deterring pests won’t be achieved by planting one specimen.

For example: one chive plant near the roses, which won’t deter aphids (which are prevalent at this time of year) – they will need to be mass planted to see any positive results.

Bees are all important in an organic garden, but even the safest of sprays such as pyrethrum could be harmful to bees. Always spray late in the afternoon when bees have hopefully gone to bed. Do this even with ecofriendly sprays.

Grow a mass of lavender under fruit trees – this not only repels insects but will attract

bees to pollinate the fruit blossom. One of the most popular herbs grown is basil – this sweet smelling herb is reported to repel most insects. I must emphasise again that quantity is needed, although a large pot of sweet basil near a doorway could discourage pesky summer fl ies. It is interesting to note that many insect repellent plants are also those herbs most favoured for cooking, which does confi rm that it’s their strong aroma that repels insects.

Dill is a great example, not only attracting bees but also helping to repel spider mites and white cabbage moths.

Update: during the next week or two, begin preparing beds for summer flowers. Christmas displays should be bedded eight weeks before, which is approximately 30 October. Gardens should be well mulched, fed with cow manure, and left a week or two before planting.

Traditionalists could plant red salvia, bordered with red and white petunias.

Camping with your canine Getting lost, snakes, ticks and open fires all pose risks to pets when camping. So, if you’ve been planning an escape to the great outdoors with your four-legged friend, here are some important tips to remember to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all.

Pre-trip it is recommended that you take your pet to the vet for a check-up and to ensure vaccinations are up to date; ensure your pet is covered by the correct tick and flea protection; and that microchip and ID tag details are up to date.

The strange adventures of Dublin’s most famed memorial photographers Dublin, 1880. Cameras are becoming cheaper and the country is flourishing with photographic studios. However, the practice of memorial portraiture - the portrait photography of the recently deceased - is on the wane. Renowned memorial photographer Brock Blennerhasset tries to revive his business after an accident, requiring the assistance of his estranged niece Nancy Vickers and his over enthusiastic new assistant Conall Molloy. After a rocky start, their working relationship begins to develop, but it appears someone more sinister is getting in on the death photography game. The investigations of Detective Frederick Regan of Dublin Castle suggest a killer may be cashing in on a developing taste for a different type of memorial

imagery, in this case, pictures of people in their death throes. As the body count begins to escalate, Blennerhasset, Molloy and Nancy have to stop a murderer intent on ruining not just their business, but their lives.

MY GARDEN Hobby - I garden, it’s wonderful for your soul and exceptional for mental health. I love designing gardens to have food and flowers all year round, it’s like a puzzle. Growing plants to look good now and others that might take five years. I love to see people eat what I’ve grown, and I love saving battered plants and seeing them bloom. It’s the most ‘in the moment’ I get.

My favourite things NEWCASTLE I love the expression “be a tourist in your own town” and I think if COVID-19 has taught us anything, it’s how lucky we are to live in this town. I have friends in tiny apartments in New York and they were in hell. During the harshest days of lockdown, we got to walk secluded tracks by the ocean.

MY KIDS I could say my kids are my greatest achievement to date, but all their best traits they got from their mother. Since I can’t take real credit for them, I’d say spending most of my life making a living from what I love is my biggest achievement. It’s easy to get out of bed when you can’t wait to start.

MUSICIAN, SONGWRITER AND DIRECTOR

Better known as Chit Chat Von Loopin Stab, Glenn is an Australian songwriter, musician, record producer, remixer, TV presenter, radio announcer, podcaster and video director from Newcastle. Famous for his role as one of the founding members of the band Machine Gun Fellatio, Glenn has recently partnered with Tony Whittaker to produce a set of a dozen short films documenting the history of Newcastle, entitled ‘Stories of our Town’. “The stories are coming at us all the time,” Glenn says. “They are little portals into our past.” Glenn, whose father moved to Newcastle from England in the late 1930s, was keen to escape the steel city as a teenager. He has since returned with a renewed love for the coastal backdrop after becoming a parent himself.

MY WIFE My wife is genuinely my favourite person. She’s smart, funny, caring and sexy. She has an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, has no interest in money, gossip or celebrity, and really listens when people talk. Being around her makes me try harder to be good and shouldn’t you surround yourself with those people?

TRAVEL My favourite holiday destination is Crescent Head. It’s our yearly escape and our happy place. We fish, swim, read, explore, feast, play board games and connect as a family. This is the opposite of a manic holiday jumping from town to town.
