This week...

From the editor It seems like just yesterday that we were ringing in the new year but, in the blink of an eye, we’re now a few days into February.

The big events are starting to roll in, with City of Newcastle’s inaugural festival New Annual set to kick off next Friday (12 February). Spanning 10 days, the festival will liven up parks, places and spaces around Newcastle as local and visiting artists share music, dance, contemporary performance, and visual art.

In Lake Macquarie, the popular Lakefest is starting on Saturday 13 February.

It will consist of 12 events and aims to promote sailing, as well as other water and land-based activities, in Lake Macquarie, Newcastle, and the Hunter Region.

As it winds down, The Newcastle Show will then spring into action.

Organisers are planning a COVIDSafe event for the community, with gates set to open on Friday 5, Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 March.

For now, though, we’re shining the spotlight on a children’s band that focuses on good music, inclusivity and lots of fun.

The Quokkas, named after the ‘happiest animal on Earth’, formed last year in a bid to spread joy and important messages during what many consider a troubling time. Read more about The Quokkas’ work in our Time Out section, page 37.

news Crakanthorp ready ‘for the jab’ as Newcastle to host vaccination hub Newcastle State MP Tim Crakanthorp admits he’s ready “for the jab” following the announcement the city will be home to one of the first COVID-19 vaccination hubs in NSW. NSW Health is planning for 11 centres to dispense the vaccine – when available – throughout the state, including John Hunter Hospital.

Vaccinations are expected to be offered in phases, with some frontline health and quarantine facility workers to receive the injection in the early stages of the program.

Newcastle will offer the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, which was granted provisional approval for use in Australia by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), to the Phase 1a priority groups.

That comprises ambulance and patient transport staff; emergency department staff; critical care ward staff (ICUs and HDUs, ECMO and medical retrieval teams); COVID clinic and COVID testing staff (public and private);

COVID ward staff; COVID immunisation clinic staff; COVID pathology lab staff (public and private); and workers at the Special Health Accommodation facility.

“It’s very exciting to see all the plans for the vaccine rollout start to fall into place,” Mr Crakanthorp said.

“With quarantine workers being in the earliest phase, it makes perfect sense to see the initial hubs created at RPA, Westmead and Liverpool hospitals.

“But, I’m thrilled that Newcastle won’t be far behind in the first phase of vaccinations.

“Even after having several months without cases of COVID-19 in the Hunter, there are vulnerable members of our community who are understandably still very concerned about an outbreak.

“So, I hope that kicking off this vaccination process gives them some peace of mind and the sooner this happens, the better.

have kept us safe throughout the pandemic, have access to the vaccine is critical and I am glad locals will be at the front of the queue when the vaccine is rolled out in NSW.” Mr Crakanthorp also alleviated any potential fears about the program.

“This vaccine would not have been approved by the TGA if it hadn’t passed the appropriate checks,” he said.

“I have every confidence in its safety and I’ll definitely be lining up for the jab when it reaches my age group.”

news Breast Cancer Trials’ mission to improve lives

Breast Cancer Trials’ chief executive Soozy Smith.

Fifty-five people are diagnosed with breast cancer every day and, sadly, almost 10 of those will lose their lives.

An oncology group based in Newcastle is doing all it can to see that number drop.

Breast Cancer Trials’ mission is for people affected by breast cancer to live better and longer and to never die from breast cancer. “[We are] one of the largest oncology groups

in Australia for breast cancer,” chief executive Soozy Smith said.

“We have been around for just over 40 years and we work with 107 participating institutions across New Zealand and Australia.

“We open our trials in a number of different locations in both cities and regional areas – 16,000 women have participated in our trials.”

Over the past 40 years, Breast Cancer Trials has delivered 85 clinical trials to help beat the most commonly diagnosed cancer.

“We look at all trials as being successful in that the trial either confirms our hypothesis or it does not,” Ms Smith said.

“If a trial does not give the result that one might expect, it is still telling us information that we did not know.

“It may be better to look at it from the other angle; that is, of the treatments currently used in treating breast cancer today, all of them will have been tested for safety and efficiency by conducting a clinical trial.”

The trials are funded through a variety of methods, with the charity receiving money

from Cancer Australia, research grants, and fundraising.

The charity will host a virtual Q&A session this evening (Thursday 4 February) to mark World Cancer Day. The Breast Cancer 2021: Research, Risks and Recovery event is free to access via registering online at Eventbrite.

“We use the Q&A as a way to keep people informed about what we are currently doing in the breast cancer space,” Ms Smith said.

“We try to mix it up with what people have liked from our blogs and we have selected areas we thought would be of interest, including updates on the trials we are running and information on breast cancer risks, prevention and breast cancer and exercise.

“I think a lot of people are always asking about new treatments and how they can improve their outcomes.”

The Q&A session will go from 6pm to 7pm.

news Colour and excitement back on The Show’s calendar A room full of sideways furniture, horticulture, robotics, food and rides are all part of The Newcastle Show’s big return this year.

Organisers have been busy planning a COVIDSafe event for the community, with gates opening on Friday 5, Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 March.

General manager Kathryn Thomson revealed Novocastrians could expect a show full of “colour, excitement and cool activations”.

“We’ve got some new exciting partnerships coming up, which will involve smaller events in and around the city and at The Show,” she explained.

“The 50 free things will be back, and the robotics are returning, they were really popular last year, and parkour will be back.”

Competition eating will make a return, too, along with beloved rides and other show favourites.

Ms Thomson added she was excited to provide locals with an event after a challenging 2020.

“It’s been a tricky year,” she said.

“Up until just before Christmas, we had a capacity limit of 5,000, so that was hard to navigate, knowing we would struggle to make a profit.

“Then it was announced we could increase that, so we’ve had a shorter lead time to deliver a larger scale event.

“But, we are pretty fortunate in that we have such a big footprint here, we can have things evenly spaced out so people can feel safe.

“While we continue to operate in an environment that can rapidly change due to the nature

of COVID-19, we are cautiously confident that The Show will go on in 2021.”

A new ticketing system will also allow organisers to ensure the event remains COVIDSafe.

The Show will refuse entry to anyone who has bought a ticket in a location that has been declared a hotspot.

“We are working through it all,”

Ms Thomson said.

“We’ll have decals around and people will have to adhere to social distancing.”

The event’s major sponsor has been announced as the Greater Bank. Tickets will be available to purchase next Monday 8 February.

news Anything is paw-sible for city’s new patrol pup

Bella the Golden Retriever at Nobbys Beach.

Bella is just like any other dog: she loves food, friends and catching a ball. But, unlike most, she has a very important role with Newcastle’s team of rangers.

The two-year-old Golden Retriever is the city’s first ‘ranger dog’, and she joins the group in its patrols along the Bathers Way coastal walk and at the off-leash dog park at New Lambton.

Bella’s role is to help teach the community about responsible pet ownership. Her owner, and accompanying ranger, Allan Hong, says she is very sociable and has helped the community approach his team with any concerns they may have.

“The idea of Bella coming along on patrols originated when I started working with council last year,” he says.

“We were doing a lot of proactive patrols in the area, and dealing with a lot of different dog matters and having a dog with us just made sense to me.

“When she is around, other dog owners can see that we are dog lovers as well, we are not just there to hand out tickets.

“Before I had Bella with me, a lot of people were

stand-offish with us, they wouldn’t approach us at all or tell us about issues.

“But, having her around has made us more approachable – a lot of the public are bringing up issues or dog-related matters with us now.”

Newcastle’s Deputy Lord Mayor Declan Clausen says Bella plays a vital role in the city that is home to more than 44,000 dogs.

“Bella is supporting our ranger team, helping educate the public and dog owners right across the city about responsible pet ownership, so making sure we have dogs on leads in public places and just helping with general socialisation of dogs,” he says.

“We know that there is [a dog] in almost every house, so, it is really important that we all play our role to make sure they are adding to our experience when we are out in public rather than some of the anti-social issues that do occur.”

Bella’s trial with the team has been so successful that the council is hoping to make her an official member of the team later this month, with plenty of dog biscuits as a reward, of course.

Ally’s dedication to the disadvantaged While 2020 brought about mass job losses across the world, Maitland’s Ally Meyn found it “the complete opposite”.

The 24-year-old helped to find meaningful employment for more than 300 disadvantaged, disabled or vulnerable members within the community as part of her role with not-forprofit organisation Mai-Wel. “I thought we would get hit during COVID and not many employers would be hiring, but it was the complete opposite,” she said.

“When JobKeeper payment was introduced and the JobSeeker payment doubled, employers found a lot of people didn’t want to go to work either because of the health risk or because they were getting the subsidies.

“So, a lot more employers were contacting us for staffing needs.”

Ms Meyn spends her time getting to know job seekers before reaching out to local businesses – an approach that creates connections and enables clients to overcome barriers, such as disability or youth disadvantage.

She also takes great pride in leading weekly

meetings as president of the local Business Network International Group.

Ms Meyn said she was passionate about improving the lives of those less fortunate and promoting Mai-Wel’s work in the community.

“I’m hoping that a lot more people in the community, who are either looking for work themselves or staff for their business, recognise us and contact Mai-Wel for support,” she said.

“I think a lot of people know us just as a disability service but we also have a youth program here as well.

“So, it’s just [about] getting that out there and for young people to be comfortable with seeking help to find employment.”

Ms Meyn’s dedication saw her recognised as Maitland’s 2020 Young Citizen of the Year during an Australia Day ceremony.

Maitland mayor Loretta Baker said her work had made a real difference.

“We are so lucky to have people like Ally in Maitland who are selflessly dedicated to helping those less fortunate in our community,” Cr Baker said.

The city’s other major award – 2020 Citizen of the Year – went to former GP, artist and Parkinson’s disease advocate, Dr Helen Tolhurst.

After being diagnosed with Parkinson’s in January 2019, Ms Tolhurst helped establish networks and support groups in the community for those with the disease and their families.

Her latest art exhibition also donated all proceeds to the Maitland Parkinson’s Support Group.

news Triple-double: Twins among school’s Kindergarten boom A Hunter school is in a class of its own after recording a 61% rise in Kindergarten enrolments.

Three sets of twins – Willow and Nate Stewart, Audrey and Charlotte Lawton, and Charlotte and Luca Coleman – were among the influx of students at Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School in Tarro for the start of term one on Tuesday morning.

Principal Cheryl Henderson, who is in her seventh year in the role, says she’s thrilled with the result.

“The really special thing, as leader of the community, is there are lots of new families, including nonCatholics, coming to us,” she said.

“We expect families that enrol their first child will continue to enrol all their siblings but, when new families are looking to come into Catholic education, that’s such a gift

to us. I like to think we’re known in the community for caring for kids and guiding their growth in learning.”

The school continues to survive and thrive following a difficult two-year period, fuelled by the Royal Commission into the Catholic Church, as well as the detection of per-and-poly-fluroalkyl substances (PFAS), and COVID-19.

In 2019, Fire and Rescue NSW investigated the presence of PFAS in soil after Tarro Fire Station used firefighting foam on the site for several years when it was a vacant lot.

A few months later, Our Lady of Lourdes then joined other schools across the state in adapting to the coronavirus, with teachers taking up online tools such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom while students learnt

from home. Despite the challenges, Mrs Henderson believes the school’s positive standing in the community is unwavering.

“The crimes of the past have impacted on Catholics everywhere,” she said.

“For families to be seeking out Catholic education, even after [the Royal Commission], speaks volumes about how successful we are in nurturing our families.

news Zara’s House builds brighter future for region’s refugees A Hunter charity has helped five refugees call Newcastle home.

Zara’s House, based in Jesmond, is a place of welcome for female immigrants and their children, providing programs to support their integration into Australian society.

The organisation assists displaced people like Zeinab Sido, Sanaa Amin, Rahaf Al Tabbaa, Aicha Al Hamad and Mnwar Alghazzani with learning English, as well as literacy in their mother languages and setting up micro-businesses.

One of the women, Ms Amin, said many of them shared a common, and tragic, story before they arrived on Australian shores.

“You can hear all of our [stories] – we fled the war,” she explained. “[We came to Australia] to build a future for our kids, to start a new life here.”

The Zara’s House volunteers join about 90 female refugees in a group on WhatsApp, where they post a nightly Australia-based, multiplechoice question for the women to

answer. Within the programs, they learn about Australian customs and traditions, as well as the legal system and laws of Australia. Zeinab Sido, who came to Australia in 2016, works alongside her husband, Darwich, at their Sido Tailor shop in Jesmond.

She added the programs at Zara’s House help female refugees “[to] think about something for yourself, to do something with your life”.

“Zara’s House has encouraged us to go outside our homes, [as] we were scared to go out,” she said.

“It’s started with our confidence, to [be able to] go into the community and have a network of other ladies, and all the ladies feel comfortable together”.

One of the biggest challenges the five women faced was the language barrier, which they believed was “very difficult” for them to learn.

When the refugees came to Australia, they were allocated a caseworker and Arabic interpreters from refugee support organisations like Newcastle Support Services,

which accompanied refugees to doctor’s appointments, dentist visits, and shopping outings.

Due to the ethnic diversity of countries like Syria, many of them already speak multiple languages, as they may have Armenian, Turkish or Kurdish backgrounds.

However, learning English will help the women write the story of their personal journeys for their future grandchildren. Ms Sido, for example, already speaks three languages, which provided her with an extra challenge.

She explained that the Zara’s House programs aided her in becoming part of the Novocastrian

community. “The citizenship course gave me a push to go outside and meet Australians,” she said.

“They [Australians] are really nice and kind, when I make mistakes, [when] I speak English, they don’t laugh at us, they help us.”

When asked what their favourite part about life in Newcastle was, the five women enthusiastically responded with answers like, “the beach”, “the lovely parks”, and “the beautiful malls”.

Ms Sido and Ms Al Hamad will be the first two in the class to undertake the Australian citizenship test this month.

Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill gains momentum Organisers behind the Newcastle Dying with Dignity campaign at the weekend were thrilled with the level of support throughout the region.

The local blitz, organised by Hunter community champions, came to fruition as Alex Greenwich MP drafted a Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill to introduce into NSW Parliament this year.

The Newcastle branch set up stalls across the area on Saturday, with the backing of state members Sonia Hornery (Wallsend), Jodie Harrison (Charlestown), Tim Crakanthorp (Newcastle) and Greg Piper (Lake Macquarie).

Each of the politicians are keen to work together on the Bill.

“I attended Wallsend Village; 16

and there was a huge turnout to talk and sign the petition in favour of voluntary assisted dying,” Ms Hornery said.

“Even my mum Roma joined us.

“It was a great morning chatting with everyone.

“Dying with Dignity [NSW] is an advocacy organisation pursuing a change in the law that will enhance choice at the end of life.

“They are seeking legislation that enables competent adults, experiencing unreliable suffering from a terminal or incurable illness, to receive medical assistance to end their life peacefully at a time of their choosing here in NSW. “Thank you to those who came down.”

was one of the key organisers, lining up stalls at shopping centres at Mount Hutton, Charlestown, Newcastle West, Wallsend, Morisset, and East Maitland.

She lost her partner Jayde to a prolonged and unnecessarily traumatic death from cervical cancer in 2018 and is now heading the grassroots movement in her hometown – and nearby electorates.

“I want to make sure that part of Jayde’s legacy is that other people won’t have to suffer horrendously at the end of their life like Jayde did,” Abbey said.

“The only thing Jayde wanted at the end of her life was the right to a peaceful, dignified death surrounded by her loved ones.

“And, because we don’t have the laws in place in NSW, she was denied that.

“It’s time to get this done once and for all.

“We’re asking members of NSW Parliament to start working together on this Bill so that it can pass.

“This is not about choosing life or death; it’s about choosing between a good death or a bad one.”

The Dying with Dignity NSW petition, launched in December 2020, boasts more than 19,000 signatures.

sport Wolves’ young guns set to pounce on touch titles The Wallsend Touch Association is hoping its junior sides can replicate, or even better, the senior teams’ outcomes in the representative arena this season.

The Wolves boasted great results at the 2020 NSW Touch State Cup at Port Macquarie in December, returning home with two titles as well as a runner-up shield.

The men’s open B squad collected the plate division after seeing off the Hornsby Lions (4-3), Wollongong (2-0) and the Ballina Bull Sharks (2-1) during the play-offs.

Wallsend’s 40 women’s knocked over neighbours Newcastle City 3-2 in the semi before overpowering Canberra City Magic 2-1 to snare the crown.

6-5 and Norths Bears 4-3 but, unfortunately, lost to the Hills Hornets 3-2 in the decider.

“We had a good tournament,” said admin officer Kellie Johnston, also a member of the victorious 40 women’s crew. “[For us] to collect a couple of premierships and narrowly miss another one, from a total of seven sides, was terrific.

“Now, we’d love to see our young players enjoy some success, too.

“And, they’re all in with a strong chance.”

Club’s work during pandemic a ‘team effort’ Jaci Lappin is used to having a contingency plan in place for everything.

However, the Carrington Bowling Club chief executive could not have been prepared for one major event that swept across the globe.

“I didn’t have [a plan] for a pandemic,” she said.

“After spending so long engaging with the community, we wanted to keep our footprint out there and let people know that they weren’t totally alone.

“I felt we were going to lose a lot of traction if we sat silently in the background.”

As COVID-19 triggered outbreaks and lockdowns, the club decided to set up social distancing markers, started much-needed renovations, and provided takeaway meals.

A live virtual raffle also offered

members a semblance of normality. “[The virtual raffle] was just the cameramen and my son and I,” Ms Lappin said.

“It was very successful – it gave the community something familiar.”

Ms Lappin’s leadership saw her awarded City of Newcastle’s 2021 Senior Citizen of the Year during a ceremony last month.

She was praised for providing a safe, inclusive space where the community could gather and for enriching the city’s vibrant social tapestry through a range of activities.

This became even more significant at the height of the pandemic when social isolation was prevalent.

Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said she was pleased to acknowledge Ms Lappin, as well as 2021 Young Citizen of the Year, professional netballer Samantha Poolman, of the Giants,

for their contributions.

“Both Samantha and Jaci are well respected, well-loved members of our community who give so much of their time to that which they are passionate about for the benefit of others,” Cr Nelmes said.

Ms Lappin, who joined Carrington Bowling Club more than a decade ago, added it had been a team effort.

“The staff are so wonderful,” she said.

“They could have sat at home on JobKeeper, but they washed walls down and helped out in other ways.

“We had 212 members when I came in, and that’s risen to about 4,000 now.

“There’s also a dog membership, where the 270 members bring their fur babies along to feel part of it all and make donations to Newcastle Dog Rescue.

Serves 6 Blackberry kale salad

Meg’s chilli chive mayonnaise

1 small bunch kale, stems removed and leaves cut into ribbons or torn finely

3 egg yolks

1/2 small head red cabbage, thinly sliced 1/4 red onion, very finely sliced 1/3 cup Meg’s chilli chive mayonnaise 1 Tbsp toasted pumpkin and/or sunflower seeds for sprinkling 1 packet of firm halloumi 1 Tbsp olive oil 1 punnet of fresh blackberries

Summer salads Cool down this summer with a delicious, fruity salad.

Here are two recipes to get you started.

1 1/2 tsp Dijon mustard 250-300ml grapeseed or canola oil (must be light flavoured) 3 tsp white vinegar 2 tsp honey 2 tsp fresh lemon juice, or to taste 1 tsp finely chopped red chilli 1/4 tsp dried cayenne pepper 1 Tbsp chopped chives Salt and freshly ground white pepper

For the mayonnaise, place the yolks and mustard in a food processor and blend until the ingredients are light and creamy. While blending, gradually add about half the oil in a slow steady stream until thick and pale in consistency.

Once half of the oil is combined, add the vinegar – this will loosen the mixture slightly and give it a paler colour. Continue to gradually add the remaining oil.

Towards the end add the flavouring highlights – honey, fresh lemon juice (or to taste), finely chopped red chilli, cayenne pepper and chopped chives. Season with a generous pinch of salt, a small dash of white pepper and if needed, a little more vinegar. Blend until well mixed.

For the salad, place all salad ingredients in a big bowl – kale, cabbage, onion and chilli chive mayonnaise. Toss well.

Gently toast your seeds in a pan over medium heat, continuously tossing until golden.

Slice the halloumi to 1cm thick pieces, add some olive oil to the pan and gently cook for 3 minutes on both sides or until golden brown.

Top salad with fried halloumi, fresh blackberries and a good sprinkle of seeds.

Cook quinoa according to directions on the packet.

1 BBQ chicken with skin and bones removed and shredded

In a bowl, toss cherry tomatoes, avocado and mint with lime and olive oil. Leave to marinate.

1/2 Australian papaya, sliced 100g Greek feta, crumbled

Place shredded lettuce in bowl.

Scatter chicken and quinoa on top.

Toss through tomato, avocado and mint mix. Place papaya slices on top of salad. Crumble feta over the top and serve.

Everybody’s welcome: new band a hit for kids Good music, inclusivity and lots of fun are the focus of Newcastle’s latest children’s band.

The Quokkas, featuring Nick Gill, Komiti Levai, Matt McLaren, Pam Hyde and Stef Tuyl, formed last

year to spread joy and important messages during a troubling time for many people.

“It’s pretty basic – we just want to spread love and tell Australian kids, and kids worldwide, that

everyone is welcome and we want them to grow up in a world that is inclusive and has a whole bunch of different faces represented,” Nick said.

“I have three-year-old twins and my wife and I were looking at what they watch and engage with and we thought it could be a little bit more inclusive, so I thought: ‘I can write music, let’s do it that way’.

“I think prejudice is learnt, we’re not born with it, so our goal is to make sure that everyone is welcome and has a bit of fun.”

Drawing inspiration from ‘the happiest animal on Earth’ for its title, the group is sure to be a favourite for kids. The Quokkas’ soon to be hits include Different Families and Everybody’s Welcome.

Nick writes these songs with the help of his kids, Otis and Harriet.

“It’s pretty fun because I have the twins,” he said.

“I generally come up with a concept and grab my guitar and play it to them and see if they enjoy

it. Sometimes they have suggested their own verses, so they have writing credits on a lot of songs.”

Made up of musicians with different cultural backgrounds and abilities, the band itself is a testament to its message.

Keyboardist and producer, Matt, was an Australia’s Got Talent finalist and tells the story that anyone, even those with a vision impairment, can achieve their goals.

Moving forward, the group hopes to keep creating music and plans to perform some live shows while being COVIDSafe.

“We really just want to keep growing so that we can sing our songs to more and more people,” Nick said.

“The more kids that can be exposed to this message, the better.

“We have seen some bleak times over the last few years, so it would be nice if the next generation grows up with a little more acceptance and inclusivity.”

It follows the discovery of human bones high on Mount Stillwell in Charlotte Pass ski resort, with the Sydney Homicide Squad called in to investigate at the isolated, snowedin village.

The team soon determines that the bones are those of a young woman who disappeared from the ski resort in 1964 during the biggest winter storm in Australian alpine history.

Fresh off its success, Christine has now launched Crackenback,

which focuses on the hunt for a suspected killer within a fictional lodge in the Snowy Mountains.

Christine said the setting of both novels added to the suspense.

“With Charlotte Pass being a very isolated, snowed-in village that you can’t readily get in or out of in the winter – it’s able to be locked down,” she said.

“It’s like another character to the story. Charlotte Pass was locked down until they caught the perpetrator but, with Crackenback, I’ve zoomed in again almost to something more isolated and smaller with that being a fictional lodge in Thredbo.”

Christine’s first foray into writing started at the age of 16 when she penned song lyrics for a band called Harmony.

Newcastle-based author Lee Christine with a copy of her latest novel, Crackenback.

They went on to appear on NBN television’s Travlin’ Out West with country music legend John Williamson and produced an LP record. After turning her writing hobby into a serious day job in 2009, Christine said the “rich, fascinating” history of the Snowy Mountains had inspired the past two novels.

“It was rough country down there, it was almost lawless in the early days,” she said.

“You had the gold rush in Kiandra [in the late 1850s] and the Snowy Hydro build after the immigrants came out here after World War II and worked on the project.

“There was also trout fishing and graziers going back to the beginning, and we all know the Man from Snowy River – the stories of the stockman.”

Christine said she liked to incorporate some of that history into her fictional work, such as an ill-fated chairlift at Charlotte Pass.

Built by Transfield, it operated during the 1964 and 1965 season before going into receivership.

“They thought Charlotte Pass would suffer because Thredbo and Perisher could now be accessed by road and Charlotte Pass had to be by Oversnow transport,” Christine said.

“So, it was a way of saving Charlotte Pass.

“The response [from readers] was amazing. People who had visited the area for many years didn’t know about it – this large piece of Australian infrastructure that still has the ruins up there.”

Humid month may prompt fungal disease, pests and rampant growth Summer has been quite unusual up until now. One day it is hot, then cool the next, and, in between, storms and rain.

February is normally the most humid month – it could be yet to come. If so, it is time for fungal disease, pests and rampant growth.

Last weekend, I was presented with quite a few cases of mealy bug, which had been mistaken for scale.

The difference is quite distinct.

Scale is firm with a crusty covering and can present in many forms, from dark infestations to white woolly scale, which are large fluffy balls (this being the most difficult to eliminate). Mealy bug can appear as flour-like or cotton

wool and is often found where new leaves are appearing and it can be sticky. Both scale and mealy bug should be treated with Malathon and white oil every 10 days. If concerned, take in samples of the infestation or even photos to your local nursery for identification.

Army grub hasn’t been prevalent this summer, presumably because it hasn’t been very dry. Sure, some of the existing patches could be from fungal attack, but the easy test is the old way.

Simply apply a wet mat or towel overnight to where the brown patches are verging on the healthy grass, then turn it over early in the morning to see what has emerged

overnight. If treatment for army grub is required, apply it late in the day as they come closer to the surface but, when trading, do the entire lawn as they will also be eating the roots of the healthy grass.

Citrus leaf miner is an ongoing problem each summer. Personally, my lime is covered in this little pest, which curls the leaf, but I find cutting of this growth may help.

It also encourages new growth, which the leaf miner loves.

A systemic spray was once available to eliminate this pest, but consultation is now necessary to see what product is available.

Roses can be pruned back now to prolong flowering until winter.

Feed with a bucketful of poultry manure, followed three weeks later with a handful of rose food.

Many other shrubs enjoy a prune at this time of year when it is essential to fertilise after pruning.

Lawns also like fertilising before the weather changes to autumn (next month).

New season annuals, such as pansies, may sneak into retail shortly, way ahead of time to plant, which the humidity will affect.

There are options available, such as lobelia and marigolds, which will grow happily until the humidity is over and autumn really arrives.

Every day is an opportunity to wake up and set some goals. Every day is an opportunity to ‘decide’ to live a healthier life and make positive changes. Every day is an opportunity to begin again.

The clock of life is ticking people and who knows when it shall stop.

It’s time to get moving Wow. Can you believe we are a full month into 2021 already? It seriously feels like only a couple of weeks ago I was writing a column that offered ‘Tips for Spring’!

How time flies and, as we all know, the older we get the faster it seems to fly.

Time truly is a funny thing. A single day can seem like it goes on forever, yet years can go by in a flash.

There are literally hundreds of ‘bumper sticker quotes’ in relation to time, and I am yet to see one that is not true.

For example: “The bad news is time flies. The good news is you are the pilot.”

“It’s not how long you live; it’s how you live. There’s only one thing more precious than our time and

that’s who we spend it on.”

Of course, being a health column, it would be remiss of me to not include some quotes related directly to our health and fitness.

If you are someone whose health is not a priority, then it’s highly likely you will regard the following as nothing more than annoying clichés.

You’re welcome!

Then again, if you have made some health or exercise-related New Year’s resolutions, and are yet to start, then I truly hope that one of these could be just the trigger you need.

So, here we go: “Yesterday, you said: ‘I’ll start tomorrow’. So, what’s today’s excuse?”

The business that began with a teenage Mitch ‘Revs’ Resevsky tattooing mates and drawing humorous cartoon caricatures for a laugh has since grown into a successful business, based in the CBD, including a gallery, studio space, and merchandise store.

Mitch Revs Gallery, Revs says, is a biproduct of his desire to add colour to the world wherever he can. “I paint murals, create original fine art and digital illustrations, plus design brand logos, clothing or merchandise,” he said. “What do I do? I try to add colour to our world wherever I can.”

One day I skipped school and drove a few hours to go and pick her up. I wasn’t allowed a dog, but I just knew I wanted her. She’s still my number one. It’s a very special feeling coming home and having your pup so excited to see and greet you.
