Facebook’s decision to ban media publications from posting content on the platform and cutting off Australians (and the rest of the world) from reliable news certainly had the desired effect.
04 06 10 13
However, it’s been a win-win for everyone. Facebook – whether rightly or wrongly – acted to protect its business from what it feels is an unjust proposed Australian law. On Tuesday afternoon, the social media giant stated it was pleased the company had reached an agreement with the federal government. “After further discussions, we are satisfied that the Australian government has agreed to a number of changes and guarantees that address our core concerns about allowing commercial deals that recognise the value our platform provides to publishers relative to the value we receive from them,” it stated. “As a result of these changes, we can now work to further our investment in public interest journalism and restore news on Facebook for Australians in the coming days.” Like all other media publications, we were affected by Facebook’s decision. However, if the same scenario occurs again, don’t forget our website at www. newcastleweekly.com.au or you can subscribe to our newsletter.

news Kurri Kurri Sunrise Rotary club ready to shine again Rotary Club of Kurri Kurri Sunrise members are hoping for a bit of “normality” when they kick off this year’s fundraising quest with their annual Craft De-Stash and Jumble Sale next month. After the COVID-19 pandemic affected the organisation’s ability to accumulate funds in 2020, the timing of the Saturday 6 March event could not be better for the tireless volunteers. “Coronavirus, and the subsequent restrictions, really hit us hard,” secretary Maria Ackermann said. “We couldn’t have our raffles, trivia nights or any activities. “So, we’re delighted we can host the Craft De-Stash and Jumble Sale, as well as the Craft Affair, again in 2021. “But, it will be a COVIDSafe event.
“We’ve registered with the NSW Government and obtained a QR code. “We’re also thankful of St Paul’s Anglican Church for allowing us the use of its hall in Lang Street.” The Craft De-Stash and Jumble Sale will go from 9am and 2pm. “It’s the third time we’ve put it together,” Ms Ackermann said. “Usually the response is pretty good, however we won’t complain if it’s even better [in 2021]. “The Craft De-Stash provides materials, wool, scrapbooking items, beads, jewellery – things like that. “The Jumble Sale is more like a garage sale. We’ve opened it up for people to be involved, too. “We’re hopeful of attracting up to 26 stalls; a lot of them book from one year to the next, which is very pleasing. The good thing is any

money we raise stays in the area. “It’ll go into a pool and, then in June, we’ll allocate it to various charities. “Last year we donated a $15,000 tovertafel (a games console developed for people with cognitive challenges) to the RFBI Kurri Kurri Masonic Village. That was extremely wellreceived.” Rotary Club of Kurri Kurri Sunrise will continue planning for its Craft
Affair in November as well. “It also takes place at St Paul’s Anglican Church – and is very popular,” Ms Ackermann said. “It’s more about finished items, as opposed to next month’s event.” If anyone is interested in having a stall, or you would like to join the organisation, phone treasurer Ann James on 0417 225 970 or secretary Maria Ackermann on 0417 681 971. - Rod Thompson

Chess: The Musical’s David Harris. Photo: Peter Stoop
Checkmate: actor thrilled to star in upcoming musical For David Harris, coming home to the Hunter has meant returning to a “Utopia”. “It’s a world apart here,” he told Newcastle Weekly.
“I tell my friends and family this really is another world – in comparison to what other places are experiencing [during the pandemic], it is like a Utopia here.
“The freedoms that we have here are a testament to the sense of community in Australia. “We really do have a good thing going, we are the envy of a lot of the world right now. “But it is not by chance. Yes, geography has a bit to do with it, but we have a government and community who want to do the right thing. “I have seen and experienced [in New York] the opposite.” The Australian actor, who grew up in Rutherford, says that, while he has lived in places all over the world, Maitland and the Hunter is home. He adds that life in the US has been “crazy” amid the pandemic and election. “I relate it to a sporting event where people have their sides and you just root for your team, but it got quite vicious and nasty and it became very tiring and disheartening,” he said.

“Part of the appeal of coming home was to just unplug from all that. Coming here is very different and something that we should be proud of and hold dear not to lose.” David’s love of the performing arts is all thanks to a high school musical. “It all started at a school in Rutherford,” he said. “There was an English/ Drama teacher who wanted to put on a musical and no one really wanted to do it so I put my hand up. “I never thought I would do it professionally; at the time, I didn’t know you could. “It was just little experiences that ended up being markers for what the rest of my life was going to be.” When it comes to his career highlights, David says it’s difficult to choose. “Every show I do teaches me something,” he said.
“Each has its value to me, and I grow from every performance so, in that sense, they are all highlights for me.” One right at the top of the list though is his latest show, Chess: The Musical. Directed by Erin James, The Very Popular Theatre Company was set to open the show in March last year, but it was postponed due to COVID-19. With musical direction from Dan Wilson, David says people can expect a show full of “brilliant music” amid a political landscape. For David, playing the lead role is extra special this time round because he is performing on his home ground and will be joined by his two older sisters. “To be honest, Chess is going to be a highlight because I’m coming back to my country and performing,” he said. “Also, for the first time ever,
I am getting to perform with my two sisters in the show – it has never happened before, and it may never happen again. “This is very special to me to have that opportunity on the stage together. I am really looking forward to it.” He adds there will be an “electric” atmosphere during the performances. “There will be a wonderful synergy between everyone because we’ve been starved of [live theatre] for a good 12 months,” David said. “[Everyone] will be swept away into a story with beautiful music.” The musical will be staged over three days at the Civic Theatre. It opens this Friday 26 February and closes on Sunday 28 February. Go to civictheatrenewcastle. com.au for more information. - Elizabeth Symington

news Podcast seeks answers on handling life’s challenges After losing his best mate to suicide two years ago, Matt Richards made a promise to himself that he’d do all he could to help others who might be facing similar challenges. Through his voluntary work, photography and fundraising, the 32-year-old father-of-two is finding new ways to reach out to those in need. The self-taught photographer launched his own podcast last month. The one-hour show is another platform by which Matt hopes to get the community talking about mental health. In his series of podcasts that share the same title as most of his endeavours – ‘Be Better Than Yesterday’ – Matt will interview high-profile Novocastrians to seek answers on how they deal with challenges.
“I want to learn about what struggles they’ve faced, and maybe still face, and what processes they use to overcome them,” he said. “[The podcast] is about starting conversations, and hopefully learning from each other.” Matt kicked off the series with an interview with former NRL player and fellow Novocastrian Mark Hughes. “I’ve had the privilege to get to know Mark over the last few months since joining his new gym, Air Locker at Kotara, so it was a comfortable conversation,” Matt said. “We talked about his struggles and how he overcomes them, and how he keeps his own mental health in-check.” There’s an array of Novocastrian identities scheduled for upcoming episodes.
“I’ll be chatting with one of the best touch football coaches in the world, Karley Banks, who has also represented Australia in rugby league, touch football and cricket,” he said. “Karley has gone through her own personal struggles after losing her mum only a few years ago. “I’ve also reached out to some other locals, including Silverchair’s Daniel Johns, Australian Air Force fighter combat instructor, Matt Hall, and Newcastle’s best surf reporter and commentator Tez McKenna. ‘Be Better Than Yesterday’ is Matt’s catchphrase. It began after a few significant life-changing moments occurred within the space of two years. Matt says his mum passed away very suddenly, and he spent her final seven weeks by her hospital
bed at John Hunter Hospital. Not long after her passing, Matt’s best mate took his own life, leaving behind a beautiful daughter and loving family and friends. “We shared some amazing memories together, including overseas holidays and being his best man at his wedding,” Matt said. Within the space of a few weeks, another young person Matt had connections with also took their own life. Sadly, Matt also became a first responder when a neighbour came to him for help, screaming in the middle of the street in the early hours of a morning. Her partner had suicided while she was at work. “It all threw me,” Matt said. “It made me question why people think exiting this world

through suicide is the only way out of their personal struggles. “There has to be more education and support and that starts here locally in our community. “You can’t change yesterday. “You can’t go back. You’ve got to start from where you are. It’s about being the best version of you.” In October 2020, Matt began his journey as one of Newcastle’s mental health ambassadors by launching a fundraiser on NRL grand final night. Raffling his favourite print, Matt had hoped to raise $1,000 for Lifeline Direct Newcastle and Hunter. “The support was amazing and very overwhelming,” Matt said. “We raised $1,000 in 45 minutes. “I just couldn’t believe it.” Matt added the prize print itself was a metaphor for mental health,
depicting a lone person walking along the beach from Merewether towards Bar Beach. “That stretch of beach is usually full of beachgoers but, on this day, at that moment, there was just that one person on the sand,” he said. “That person might look like they’re all alone, but they might have family and friends, work colleagues, or team-mates, just outside the picture. “It resembles mental health – you’re not alone.” Shying away from any reference to being superhuman, Matt says he is involved in so much community work because he “never says no”. “I think I just put myself out there,” he said. “It’s how you learn. If looking at a photo on Instagram helps someone feel better about themselves and their life, then it’s

the least I can do to help.” Matt’s motivation, he says, is to be a positive role model for his two sons, as well as the students he teaches, the junior athletes he coaches in rugby league and touch football, and also his friends and family. “I hope I am making them
all proud of what I am trying to create through my photography, videography and my new podcast,” he said. If you or someone you know needs support, please call Lifeline on 13 11 14. - Rebecca Riddle

news Warners Bay student backs MP’s over-crowding campaign A Warners Bay High student has thrown her support behind Charlestown state MP Jodie Harrison’s campaign to eradicate over-crowding in her electorate’s schools. The local Shadow Minister for Early Childhood Learning was recently shocked to discover 11 public educational facilities in the area – Kahibah, Charlestown South, Dudley, Eleebana, Redhead, New Lambton South, Garden Suburb, Warners Bay High, Charlestown East, Belair and Kotara – had exceeded their enrolment cap. “The environment that pupils are in impacts not only the way they experience learning, but their ability to learn, too,” Ms Harrison said. According to data, supplied by the Shadow Minister for Education
10
during a Question on Notice session in the Upper House, Kahibah Public surpassed the limit by 164%, ahead of Charlestown South (141%), Dudley Public (138%), Eleebana Public (135%), Redhead Public (132%) and New Lambton South Public (130%). Warners Bay vice-captain Alexia Street said she harboured similar concerns with Ms Harrison, who raised the issue in NSW Parliament this month. “Over-crowding is only just starting to become a problem for a lot of high schools in the Hunter region, with most already past their enrolment ‘buffer’ and cap,” she explained. “However, as the population attending schools has increased in recent times, along with the

number of students in senior years, the government’s lack of action will eventually cause a crisis. “I’ve definitely seen the impacts of it at Warners Bay High. “Senior pupils are sent home early some days of the week as there is no room to simply allow everyone to have a study period. “Several senior classes are forced to use unfavourable rooms as it is the only classroom available
for them to use, particularly as they tend to have a smaller amount of students. “Most of my schooling career, we have been told that ‘Year 12 takes priority’. “But, it’s a shame to see – due to the lack of action from the government – it no longer applies. “It is barely possible to socially distance at most schools. And, with worldwide pandemics becoming so
very real, the health and safety of students should be a high priority for the government. “There’s an increasing lack of shaded and covered areas throughout the school, so much so that we utilise some classrooms on wet days as pupils have nowhere else to go. However, it also means teachers may miss out on key breaks to supervise students in the classroom.” Miss Street admitted the topic of “over-crowding” was becoming a talking point among her peers. “It’s always been a known problem but not many pupils bother with the matter as they feel like there’s nothing they can do or no one to talk to about it,” she said. “Most students definitely acknowledge that this is big dilemma throughout schools.” The youngsters’ fears also led to Miss Street contacting Ms Harrison. “As Jodie is my state
member and Shadow Minister for Early Childhood Learning, I figured she would know if there were any plans on how to handle increasing population in the education sector,” she said. “It starts from early childhood learning and the consequences only grow greater as pupils move up through the system. “We mainly discussed the lengths of the problem and how it impacts daily student experiences at school. “In addition, we spoke about the length of the problem at primary schools, too, and what is being done – if anything – by the government.” Miss Street had plenty of advice to offer NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and her colleagues. “The NSW Government should stop relying on mere statistics and really survey the schools properly,” she said. - Rod Thompson

news Grand plans for Foreshore Park City of Newcastle is seeking community feedback on a new concept for Foreshore Park, which sees the site’s community playspace increase almost eightfold. The design shows a fenced regional-level accessible and inclusive playground the size of eight basketball courts and a significant waterplay space that links back to Newcastle’s indigenous heritage including representation of the original shoreline of the harbour foreshore. The concept, based on consultation with the community over the past year, should deliver a versatile space featuring community gardens, open areas for children to skate, scoot and splash, and designed to allow a variety of major events in the city centre. A headline element of the preliminary concept for Foreshore Park is the inclusive Variety Livvi’s Place playspace, which is being delivered in partnership with Variety the Children’s Charity. The design will include a cultural heritage walk that provides the opportunities to tell both Awabakal stories like Mulubinba, the place of many sea ferns, Awabakal canoe hunting on the
harbour, as well as recognising post 1880 stories and the redevelopment of Newcastle as we know it. These tales are intended to replace the 1988 pond, which represented the original fresh water source and one of three man-made wells known as “The Frog Pond”. Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the local community’s valuable feedback had been reflected in the draft plans. “It is wonderful to have an incredible regional scale inclusive playground based on input from our residents as the cornerstone of the preliminary concept for our city’s iconic Foreshore Park,” she stated. “Now more than ever, we value our open spaces and parks. “This project is a great collaboration between City of Newcastle, Variety the Children’s Charity and our community, which will transform the Harbour Foreshore into a more inviting recreational space and major event venue for everyone to enjoy.” The addition of the cultural components
The design concept for the Foreshore Park play area.
at Foreshore Park was strongly supported by Luke Russell from Guraki Aboriginal Advisory Committee. “I’m really pleased there is a significant increase in the representation of Guuri culture in the Foreshore Park concept with the plan reflecting equal parts Aboriginal and nonAboriginal heritage,” he said. “City of Newcastle’s engagement on this project has resulted in a positive outcome for the community.” Community engagement closes at 5pm on Friday 5 March. sport Rain washes cup away Months and months of preparation, and meticulous planning, were washed away in one foul swoop at the weekend. Following more than 100mm of rain, in one downpour alone, organisers of the 2021 NSW Touch Junior State Cup were forced to cancel the prestigious Northern Conference at Port Macquarie. The decision was a devastating blow to the hopes of the Hunter Valley’s 1200 young players, with the Beresfield Bandits, Newcastle City Knights, Wallsend Wolves, Maitland Redbacks, Nelson Bay Neptunes, Singleton Storm, Muswellbrook Mambas and Scone Breakers fielding in excess of 80 teams. NSW Touch Association (NSWTA) staff were optimistic play would resume on Saturday morning (20 February), but further rainfall and flooded surfaces at the Regional

Sports Stadium and Tuffins Lane precinct, forced their hand. The organisation worked on several scenarios to contest the remaining 378 games before the finals. However, to further complicate the circumstances, the Public Health order in place – and restriction of no more than 3000 people on the grounds at any one time – dramatically impacted its ability to manage field conditions and movement of matches. “With regret and sadness, we had to abandon the remainder of the 2021 NSW Touch Junior State Cup Northern Conference,” a NSWTA spokesperson said. “We know this decision will cause disappointment, frustration and, in some case, anger. Please understand that it was not taken lightly or without due consideration of all possible alternatives.”

Fresh take on a freaky classic Freaky, funny and fresh – it’s a combination that hopes to thrill Hunter audiences next month. Young Frankenstein, a new musical by Mel Brooks based on the classic comedy movie from 1974, will arrive in the region for the first time from Friday 19 to Sunday 28 March at Warners Bay Theatre. In the film, an American inherits the castle of his grandfather – the infamous scientist Dr Victor von Frankenstein. Once inside, he comes across a funny hunchback called Igor, a pretty lab assistant named Inga and an old housekeeper, Frau Blucher.
After eventually discovering his grandfather’s work, Young Frankenstein continues his experiments of reanimating the dead. The musical, a revised version that opened in London’s West End in October 2017, will be Opera Hunter’s first production for 2021. Director Zac Smith said it had been on his radar for some time. “This is the type of stuff I grew up on – comedy, English movies, and my dad was a big fan of the [original] film,” he said. “I listened to the musical while building the set for [a previous production] She Loves Me in the

newer faces to the Newcastle scene and some of its character actors, who you might’ve seen in a lot of shows but they only played a small part.” The Young Frankenstein cast is led by seasoned Newcastle performer Drew Holmes, who

Despite the obvious problems that the World is currently facing, God intends as He has from the beginning, to establish a literal Kingdom on this earth, replacing all the nations and kingdoms that currently exist. (Read Daniel 2v44) The promised King and Israel’s Messiah that will rule this divine kingdom will be none other than the Lord Jesus Christ. (Read Matt 27v11,Rev19v16)

Prophetically included in the well known Lord’s prayer are the words ……………… “Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven……..” Matt 6v9 The Bible has remarkably clear and detailed descriptions of this coming Kingdom!

Daniel’s prophecies are among the most outstanding, and so we will be considering briefly “The Dream of the Babylonian King” (Dan 2),”The Vision of the 4 Beasts” (Dan 7), and “The vision of the Ram and Goat” (Dan 8). All who understand and believe the promises of God and who associate themselves with Jesus through baptism, can put their past mistakes behind them and make a fresh start to life again, in fellowship with God, waiting for peace on earth. (Mark 15v16; Luke 2v14) Are you interested to learn about God’s coming Kingdom? Director Smith said he was busily preparing for Young Frankenstein, which promised to be a “fun, quirky show”. “The set is my design – there will be upright pallets, maybe backed with hessian, and everything else will be hay bales,” he said. “In the process of directing, [the set] is normally the last thing I do because it takes so long to try and figure out what I want. “But, from when I pitched it, I had the idea in mind. “It was something cheap and something that we could get resources from – we are trying to use a one-stock set and have elements that can move.” Visit operahunter.org.au/ portfolios/young-frankenstein/ for more information or to buy tickets. - Ben Murphy

Business backs young mothers Supporting young mothers in business is something Jasey Stanley is passionate about. That’s why the decision to open Soul Kollective was so easy. “When something is meant to be, it just falls into place,” she said. Based in Merewether, Jasey’s latest business venture is a collaborative space stocking the wares of a range of Newcastle small businesses – all belonging to local mums. From clothing and accessories to gift ideas, books, oils and candles, the pastel-coloured heritage building with a classic ‘corner-store feel’ is the new home of the unique business concept. “We have 20 businesses in house at the moment,” Jasey said. “All sharing a business space and ideas and positive energy. “In May, there was just three or four.” After closing its doors for 10 weeks during the height of the pandemic, the former site of Newcastle’s Merry Go Round on Railway Street has been transformed into a retail space shared by a range of small local business owners. “I originally called Tegan (the store’s previous owner) to ask about including my photography
business at the site, but she told me she was selling, and I blurted out: ‘Okay, I’ll take it’. “It was an opportunity that literally fell into my lap.” Following renovations, Soul Kollective launched with the aim of “seeing mums share shifts and workloads to allow time with their kids and their lives”. “I’m no expert but I love sharing what I’ve done and bouncing ideas off other mums,” she said. When Jasey took over the running of the store she rebranded it, visually establishing a fresh start. “Kollective with a ‘K’ is in honour of my mum, Kimbo,” she said. “And I wanted something that represented that we are all beautiful souls, all of these businesses and all of these mums. “If a mum had to open her own store to sell her products when she was just starting out in business, and she still had to try and juggle her family life, she’d be exhausted. “It’s about timing. It’s got to be the right time, and then it’s about finding the right balance.” Soul Kollective is open from 9am to 4pm weekdays and 9am to 1pm on weekends. - Rebecca Riddle

Don’t lose passion for popular fruit
I have noticed this year we aren’t being bombarded with questions about passionfruit, nor are they a hot item for planting. Perhaps passionfruit lovers have given up during the last couple of years when it was dry and spring was unsettled, which isn’t conducive to fruit production. The wet weather has perhaps been discouraging this year as
it does create problems with pollination, but there really haven’t been many enquiries. Please don’t give up growing passionfruit as they are easy to grow and can produce in abundance when given the correct cultivation methods. This includes feeding and good soil preparation, such as digging in cow manure and adding sulphate of potash, both of which should be repeated during the growing season. It should be noted that seed grown varieties won’t produce fruit for two years, whereas the grafted varieties begin producing much earlier. There are times when vigorous growth is produced but no passions. This can be caused by nitrogen which is present in grass clippings
as well as poultry manure. An overabundance of nitrogen not only causes rampant vine growth – it can also cause a deficiency of phosphorus, which is essential for productivity. The remedy for this is a large handful of super phosphate per square metre surrounding the vine as well as pruning back excessive growth. Prune back a few vigorous laterals and some of the main growth to a lesser side branch or, if you wish to maintain the fence cover, simply curve the ends of long shoots downwards to control outward growth. Under normal weather conditions, pruning will improve fruiting. Weak laterals should be removed as cluttered growth will discourage fruiting.

THIS WEEK: • Hand pollinate pumpkins and melons as excessive rain will stop fruit-set. • Prepare ground for autumn seedlings – dig in poultry manure and an all-purpose plant food. Why poultry? Winter flower and vegetables prefer an alkaline soil. • Prune poinsettias to encourage dense growth.

School to train floral creatives Jess Eckford-Aguilera knows how to get things done. As the founder of Newcastle Food and Flower Markets, the mother-of-three has barely stopped to smell the roses since her vision bloomed to life in 2017. Originally established as a flower market, Jess’ floral hub soon grew in popularity, offering local growers an alternative to Sydney trading. By 2019, the creative had transformed a tired building in Sandgate into an attractive destination, including a wedding space, café, fresh produce store and flower market. Located just off Sandgate Road, the space is once again set to expand its operation, with Jess launching Newcastle’s first flower school in April. The School of Floral Design at Newcastle Flower School, Jess says, will aim to be “the best in Australia, teaching modern techniques to aspiring floral creatives”. “Our aim is to create a school that is renowned for its modern trends and style, and training, that our students can take out into the floral world,” Jess said. “I’m all about empowering and inspiring through style and design and I can’t wait to pass

on what I know. “I’ve got some influential floral designers coming in doing intimate styling sessions, we’ll do styling trips, we’ll visit a flower farm and meet the growers, and learn the growing process, and dabble in wedding floral design.” The intense hands-on course will be held one day a week for three months. Topics will include business management, branding, marketing and social media trends, with Jess taking the majority of classes. “I love sharing knowledge, but I think modern techniques are needed, so that will be my focus. “People don’t think they’re creative. They say I could never do that. Then, at the end of a class, they’ve created masterpieces. “The course is not just for people wanting to open a florist, it’s for anyone who wants to feel confident in design and styling.” Despite there being a month before classes begin, enrolments in the School of Floral Design have already surpassed Jess’ expectations. “We’ve been so surprised by how fast it’s been growing,” she said. “People have been wanting to get in touch with their creative side, they’ve been at home more, and
discovering new things they might otherwise not have done.” Newcastle Flower School’s inaugural course will start on Wednesday 14 April. Go to foodandflowermarkets.com.au for more information. - Rebecca Riddle

This should be a great year for romance, and she will find that her relationships are fulfilled on many different levels. However, on the health front she must be careful of overindulging as this is certain to catch up with her. This is the ideal time for her to beautify her home and reconnect with nature. She will also draw much pleasure from being involved in her children’s education.

The Full Moon on 27 February indicates that you may be feeling under the weather, so plan to do as little as possible. You might consider making changes that could include your own appearance and how others perceive you; but nothing too drastic or you may regret it.
indicates that you are not in possession of the full facts of a situation and you will pay the price if you act impetuously. Take a cool, calm, and long-term view of any business, financial or legal matters.
TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY The Full Moon on 27 February indicates that you may have to put up with some flak from your children or partner, as they could be in a tense or tetchy frame of mind. Don’t stress; things steadily improve until the end of winter.
GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE The Full Moon on 27 February indicates troubles on the home and family front. So, prepare for some misunderstandings with those you live with. There’s a good chance you’ll make a healthy investment now, although the rewards may not be immediate. It’s a good time to visit the ocean.

AUSSIE ARK I went to Aussie Ark for the first time recently. I fell in love with the work they do rehabilitating and preserving endangered Australian species and their natural habitat. I was so impressed that my firm now sponsors Neville the Tasmanian Devil and Poly the Koala.
My favourite things NEWCASTLE I spent five years living and working in Honolulu, Hawaii. I loved it but it doesn’t hold a patch to Newcastle. The city and the Hunter is beautiful and real – a great place to celebrate life.
WRITING
Gillian Summers
I used to work in PR and have always loved to write. I’m currently writing a novel called Star of Hope - set in Hill End in the 1860s gold rush. I have also written a concept for a sitcom series - Tough Love which has had some interest from Hollywood. Stay tuned!
TRAIL-BLAZING BUSINESS WOMAN
Gillian Summers has been described as a Newcastle institution who successfully turns her hand to many things. She has a can-do attitude and a strong sense of community spirit. Gillian’s always ready to lend a hand for a good cause, especially if it is combined with a chance to be with friends and celebrate in style. Watching the 2020 bushfire coverage in horror, Gillian and some friends asked what they could do to make a difference. They quickly rallied the local community to donate items that were transported to bushfire-ravaged communities and their local firies, earning them a commendation from the NSW Government. A strong advocate for women in the business world, Gillian has led by example as a trailblazer in roles within male-dominated international, national, and local organisations. Gillian’s served on the board of the Hunter Business Chamber and has also been chief of staff to the Lord Mayor of Newcastle. Nowadays she runs a successful local manufacturing business with her husband.
HAROLD THE COCKATIEL I love my family most of all but Harold the Cockatiel is part of our family. I’m a crazy bird lady. Harold’s been with me for three years. I take him to bootcamp at the beach and sometimes he comes to work too. Birds are really intelligent and loving.
LIFELINE I’ve been a supporter of Lifeline for many years after I was blindsided by a friend’s death by suicide. I had the privilege of being on the board of Lifeline Hunter Central Coast and being its CEO. Now I am an ambassador. They do such great work helping local people in crisis and they need our continued support.
