AUSTRALIA’S BIGGEST EATING COMPETITION RETURNS TO THE SHOW
Newcastle Weekly .com.au contents
thursday 04 march 2021
From the editor This is my last column. I’ll be moving on to an exciting opportunity at the end of this week, falling just short of four years at the Newcastle Weekly. When I first joined the magazine back in April 2017, I quickly got to know so many welcoming community members and groups in my role as the sole journalist. It’s a big area that we cover – the entire Hunter Region – and I certainly clocked up the kilometres, but I loved getting out and about to meet people, hear their joys or concerns, and share their stories. Since becoming editor in October 2019, there have been some real challenges – namely, the pandemic. Despite some difficult decisions (such as the absence of the ever-popular TV Guide), I’m proud of the fact that we tackled so many obstacles head-on and came out the other side. I love hearing the positive feedback we receive about this free publication and its community-focused content. We all take great pride in being able to bring it to you – our loyal readers – each week. Without wanting to sound like I’m at the ARIAs, I’d like to thank my old boss, Georgia, and former general manager, Paul, as well as our talented current team, especially Elizabeth, Kath, Bec, Rod, and Calum. The magazine is in very safe hands, with new editor Rod Thompson taking the reins next week. Thanks for the support over the years – it’s been a great ride. - Ben Murphy

ARTea’s, a finalist in this year’s Lake Mac Awards, is a team of dedicated volunteers that has been nominated for the Community Group of the Year honour. “It feels amazing for the volunteers to be recognised and it is lovely that it has been so well supported by the community,” Swansea Community Cottage project manager Susan MacNeill said. “These volunteers come and give their time, out of the joy of connecting with the community, so it is really nice to say thank you to them. “It’s just nice to see a whole range of volunteer groups [in our category]
have their moment in the sun.” The team joins Awesome Lake Mac, City Serve Incorporated (Hello Hunter), Southlake’s Incorporated, Swansea Meals on Wheels and The Big Hug Box. The gallery and gift shop features work by artists and hobbyists, as well as local and pre-loved creations. Its garden is home to natives, bush tucker, herbs, indoor plants and fresh veggies, which are all put up for sale, while the tearoom serves Devonshire Teas and light snacks by donation. About 20 volunteers dedicate their time to help run the gallery. “Our volunteers range from gardeners, who help with general maintenance, mowing and veggie patches, to those inside working in the kitchen and serving our

news Don’t tear it down: residents’ plea to keep playground A NSW Government plan to tear down a Hamilton South playground has earned the ire of Newcastle state MP Tim Crakanthorp and neighbouring residents. And, the local member is rallying with concerned locals from the social housing estate to stop the demolition of the Neill Terrace facility. Unfortunately for the public, the site has not been maintained to a basic safety standard, so the government is proposing that it be removed – with no replacement provided. The decision’s met plenty of opposition. “The playground’s been here since the early 1970s,” said Janice Patterson, a member of the Hamilton South Community Solutions Group. “Even though it was upgraded in the 80s, it’s deteriorated over time.
“Now, it’s dangerous for kids because it isn’t equipped for them. “Children can get caught in the equipment, or trip over on the uneven surface. It’s a very popular area but the government wants to rip it up and replace it with turf. “The funny thing is, a new fence was installed during COVID-19, which would have cost money. It makes no sense.” On hearing about the residents’ displeasure, Mr Crakanthorp began a petition. So far, it boasts 200 signatures, however another 300 are needed for it to progress to the minister. “Tim has been amazing,” Ms Patterson said. “Everything we’ve asked for, he’s stepped up. It’s lovely to know we have such huge support. There are

about 1,000 residents in this estate – and only two playgrounds. “The older people want their grandchildren to play in it whenever possible.” The government recently sold another two social housing properties at the end of 2020, with the Stockton assets fetching $1.9 million. In the past decade, 82 similar estates have also been unloaded, netting more than $50 million, including almost $10 million in
Bar Beach. “This is a case of demolition by neglect – and it’s disgraceful,” Mr Crakanthorp told Newcastle Weekly. “It’s shameful the NSW Government can’t maintain its own resource or provide basic community infrastructure. “The cost of a new playground is a drop in the ocean, possibly $50,000, compared to what they’ve made selling off social housing property.” - Rod Thompson
Port Stephens koalas are ‘isolated’, study reveals A DNA study has revealed koalas in Port Stephens have limited gene flow, due to their isolated habitats. The research was commissioned by not-for-profit World Wide Fund For Nature Australia (WWF) as part of its campaign to double the koala population in eastern Australia by 2050. The report disclosed two main koala genetic clusters in the Port Stephens area, one in the Tilligerry and Tomaree Peninsula, and another in the Balickera, Karuah, and Ferodale region. WWF Australia’s head of healthy land and seascapes Darren Grover said the wildlife organisation was “concerned” about the limited gene flow among the Port Stephens koalas. “They can lose genetic diversity and become less able to adapt to climate change or fight off new diseases,” he explained. “Habitat fragmentation, which
impedes gene flow, is a major problem for koalas and other species. That’s why a major focus of Koalas Forever is to protect existing habitat, regenerate cleared forests, and to plant tree corridors to reconnect isolated populations.” Researchers collected koala faeces on three occasions, in November 2018, July 2019, and May 2020. The study used detection dogs, Taz and Missy, provided by OWAD Environment, to locate koala scat. The droppings would then be analysed for DNA by scientists at the Federation University Australia. The report outlined that the two genetic clusters were once linked, however, the peninsula koalas are now “significantly different” from their inland brethren. It suggested the decline in genetic diversity among peninsula koalas may be due to difficulties for them to migrate outside this area. - Calum Thomson

news Global move to mark infant loss Newcastle will join landmarks across the globe in showing its support for lost babies when it illuminates its clocktower in pink and blue in October. Every day, 282 Australian women lose a baby during pregnancy, yet their loss was only acknowledged nationally last month. A motion was passed in Canberra’s House of Representatives, officially recognising 15 October as the International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day. For Perth couple John and Kate De’Laney, the news was “overwhelming”. After the loss of their first son to a miscarriage in 2012, the pair had been fighting to have a day of recognition included on the national calendar. Five years and 15 cycles of unsuccessful IVF treatments later, John and Kate were told at their baby’s first scan that there was no heartbeat. It was the first of seven miscarriages they would suffer. “We were devastated,” John said. “We both felt lost and alone.” He and Kate made a promise to one another

that day that they would do all they could to make sure no one else experienced the feelings of loss or confusion they had felt. “We didn’t know where to turn, or how to mark the loss we were feeling,” he said. “It doesn’t matter how far along a pregnancy is, grief is felt just as deeply.” Through his research, John learned that, in October 1988, then US President Ronald Reagan had declared October Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month in the United States. During Reagan’s speech, he had declared there was a need to mark the loss a person feels when a child dies prior to its birth. The findings spurred John and Kate to continue their fight for a nationally recognised date. In November 2019, John and Kate met with Senator Kristina Keneally, seeking her support. “That’s when it really kicked into gear,” John said. In 2012, John arranged for several Perth landmark buildings to be lit pink and blue. By 2020, the number had increased to 135, including Newcastle’s clocktower.
Pregnancy and Infant Loss Australia founders Kate and John De’Laney and their daughter Mary-Jane are thrilled 15 October will become an annual date to recognise the thousands of babies lost during pregnancy.
This year, the pair is hoping to include international landmarks in its tally. “Since the day we lost our son there have been approximately half a billion babies lost during pregnancy,” John said. “A date gives us all an opportunity to recognise the loss of a baby, and it gives their existence meaning.” - Rebecca Riddle
Meeting discusses next step for north Stockton Mass sand nourishment is set to form a part of this year’s Stockton Coastal Management Plan (CMP). The 2020 CMP was certified by the NSW Government in August which considered council-managed land from the Northern Harbour Breakwall to Meredith Street, providing a long-term strategy. And, earlier this month, Deputy Premier John Barilaro announced that the state government had approved an exploration licence to identify suitable offshore sand for renourishment. The work, which will take place off the coast of Newcastle, is geared up to occur in the coming weeks as part of a future plan to permit offshore dredging to secure sand for Stockton Beach. City of Newcastle hosted a meeting with the Stockton Community Liaison Group (SCLG) and relevant northern landholders
Hunter Water Corporation, Defence Housing, Family and Community Services, and Crown Lands last week to discuss its options. SCLG Chair Barbara Whitcher said it was important for everyone to work together to protect the area’s coastline. “The SCLG, facilitated by council, is now working with other landowners and stakeholders through a rigorous process to ensure the northern section of Stockton has a viable and acceptable long-term plan to manage coastal hazards,” she explained. “We believe it’s important to work with all stakeholders to achieve a solution that protects Stockton Bight from predicted coastal hazards.” Other protection work and maintenance is also ongoing to help maintain access to the beach and manage severe weather events.

news Government criticised over covert speed cameras
Hunter politicians are united in criticising the NSW Government’s covert speed camera “cash cows”.
Hunter MPs are united in criticising the NSW Government’s covert speed camera “cash cows”, stating the move to remove the warning signs had failed to stop bad driver behaviour. In fact, income from the state-run operations has leapt to about eight times the previous rate in just a short space of time. According to Revenue NSW data,
the return from the single month of January jumped to more than $3.4 million from just $382,000 in the same period in 2020. The number of fines issued [in January] was 14,688 compared to just 1,956 from last year – a rise of 750%. In the Hunter, Newcastle Road (Wallsend), Excelsior Parade (Toronto), Main Road (Edgeworth), King Street (Warners Bay), Victoria Street (Kurri Kurri), Lake Road (Elemore Vale), Lambton Road (New Lambton), University Drive (Callaghan), New England Highway (East Maitland) and the Pacific Highway (Tomago) appear to be the thoroughfares most heavily targeted. “It is very important that people slow down, but drivers deserve respect,” Wallsend state MP Sonia Hornery said. “They shouldn’t be subject to a
clandestine money grab. “The cameras in the Hunter have shown massive increases with the electorate having four of the top 10 spots for fines issued by the camera in December 2020, including Newcastle Road at Wallsend being the number one position.” According to Maitland state MP Jenny Aitchison, the large upsurge in the number of fines issued showed the government’s strategy has failed to make roads safer. “The government should be advertising these changes, not rolling them out in silence,” she stated. “The seven-and-a-half-fold increase in fines shows conclusively that having signage on these detection devices slows drivers down. “Getting a fine in the mail two weeks later doesn’t.

“This is just another cash grab from the Liberals and Nationals, with no regard for improving safety on our roads.” The changes announced by the NSW Government on 19 November last year included: scrapping warning signs for mobile speed cameras; removing the livery from vehicles conducting mobile speed checks; and tripling the hours of operation for each mobile speed camera operating in NSW. Ms Aitchison said the changes would be rolled out over 2021. “I believe this will get worse,” she admitted. “As the rollout ramps up, as more covert vehicles are deployed in secret, more drivers will receive their first ever speeding fine. “In the meantime, speeding and other poor behaviour will continue.” - Rod Thompson
Plastic-free campaign floats around popular cafe hubs Lake Macquarie coffee drinkers are being encouraged to reduce waste and protect the environment after millions of takeaway cups went to landfill in 2020. The Lake Macquarie Sustainable Neighbourhood Alliance partnered with more than 30 cafes throughout the city to provide reusable coffee cups for $2 under a Plastic Free Cafes project. The initiative, which has been supported by a NSW Government Community Litter Grant, aims to minimise the amount of litter and waste created by single use plastic items, such as takeaway coffee cups and plastic straws. The first rollout was completed in Warners Bay and Toronto in March 2020 before the pandemic brought it to a halt.
However, the group’s secretary Stephen Dewar said many cafes were starting to accept reusable cups again using COVIDSafe methods. “We’ve got 35 cafes in total and, on the information we handed out to them, we showed them the safe way to be careful with reusables – to just pour it in and the customer is the only one who touches the cup,” he said. “Many of these cafes are also offering a discount for choosing reusable. “All we ask is that customers give a donation of $2 for the cup and clean it after each use. “Single-use coffee cups are not recyclable, and they either end up in landfill or littering our streets, parks and waterways.

“We want to make it easier for people to join the thousands of other Lake Macquarie residents who are making the switch away from single-use plastics.” Clean Up Australia estimates that one billion disposable coffee cups are used every year, which means about 2.7 million are thrown out each day. Mr Dewar added that, once the Plastic Free Cafes project was complete, the group had another target in mind. “There’s a lot of takeaway with
tradies, so that’s what we will be targeting after the cafes,” he said. “In a big clean up, we found that [some] tradies come in quickly to get a burger or coffee or they go to a little coffee truck and then maybe chuck it on their way out. “So, we are going to concentrate on that.” Visit the group’s website at sustainableneighbourhoods.org. au/plastic-free-cafes for more information. - Ben Murphy

news Vinnies calls for helping hands If the pandemic has taught Australia anything, it is the importance of community support and having a positive impact on those in need. Despite the challenges, national charity Vinnies continues to do just that. Now, people who want to give back to the community are being invited to join its team of volunteers across the Port Stephens, Newcastle and Hunter regions. “This is our 99th year in NSW serving the community and we couldn’t do it without volunteers,” area manager Bradley Grieve said. Vinnies operates 237 retail shops throughout NSW, which offer a diverse range of pre-loved items for customers to purchase. Mayfield is one of the stores in desperate need of more helping hands. After temporarily closing its
doors due to the pandemic, the store, located in Church Street, has reopened with COVIDSafe measures in place. “We need at least four or five volunteers at Mayfield,” Mr Grieve said. “We need a van driver and retail volunteers – the retail volunteers don’t have to work in the shop though, we do have a sorting room so people can do anything within their capabilities. “The commitment is just half a day a week; four hours is the minimum, but most volunteers would do a full day or two. “Most of our shops within the region, including Belmont, Swansea, Muswellbrook, Scone and Murrurundi, are in need of volunteers.” Vinnies’ volunteer engagement officer Andrew Green added it was

a great way to meet people. “We have a lovely group of volunteers who have been able to make a positive impact in the local community,” he said. “For a lot of us, the events of the past year have highlighted the importance of community and looking out for people in need. “Working in a Vinnies shop is a great chance to meet excellent people and you get the satisfaction that the sales are used to support
people who fall on hard times.” Volunteering requires people to donate a few hours of their time each week to help with roles, including customer service, sorting donations, and maintaining the dayto-day running of the shop. New ambulance stations a healthy fit for Hunter “We’ll now be able to provide a better service for the community” is how proud station officer Ashley Cutten described the impact of the new Birmingham Gardens ambulance precinct on the region. Paramedics in the Hunter are more appropriately equipped to respond to emergency situations following the official opening of the Birmingham Gardens and Rutherford stations this week. Parliamentary Secretary for Health Natasha Maclaren-Jones, Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin and Wallsend state MP Sonia Hornery joined NSW Ambulance Assistant Commissioner Clare Lorenzen for a tour of the latest facilities, delivered as part of the NSW Government’s $132 million Rural Ambulance Infrastructure
Reconfiguration (RAIR) Stage 1 program. “It’s been about two years from the time we first heard the news,” Mr Cutten said. “But, we’re thrilled with how it’s come together. “We moved from our Wilkinson Avenue premises, where we’d been since 1964, and started operations at Nash Street in May 2020. “Unfortunately, COVID-19 slowed everything down; that is why the official opening is taking place [now]. “However, for the 24 permanent staff members [here], it will be so much better – and practical. “In fact, it’s five times the size of our old building. So, it’s certainly made for the future.” The new purpose-built stations feature internal parking for up

to seven emergency ambulance vehicles; administration and office areas; staff amenities; multi-purpose meeting and training room; logistics and storage areas; wash bays; and staff parking. The station at Rutherford also consists of an education facility and zone management office area. Mrs Maclaren-Jones admitted it was important to keep the staff, and communities, as safe as possible. “This is a fine example of how the NSW Government is continuing its promise to deliver the most up-to-
date equipment and facilities,” she said. “I’m delighted to see the finished development [on Tuesday].” Assistant Commissioner Clare Lorenzen said the facilities were crucial services for thousands of residents. “This project is an important step in the delivery of high-quality mobile emergency care to the people of Birmingham Gardens, Rutherford and surrounding areas,” she told Newcastle Weekly. - Rod Thompson

That the Cessnock Goannas did not win a real title in 2020, it was a “Mickey Mouse” format while others called it the “COVID-comp”. But, the criticism is water off a duck’s back, according to the highlyrespected coach. No matter what anyone says or thinks, history will show Edwards guided his team to Newcastle Rugby League first grade glory in one of the toughest seasons on record. “After all the grand finals we’ve been in, we still cop it anyway,” he stated. “In fact, it’s happened for years. “People forget, the kids played for nothing [last season] and worked just as hard. “Like I have said 100 times, the

four sides that were left – and this is nothing against the teams who didn’t make it – would have held their own in any other Newcastle Rugby League year. “Wyong, South Newcastle, Western Suburbs and ourselves would have won more than they lost in a normal season. “Yeah, it’s got back to me about the so-called COVID-comp, how it was weaker – and all that rubbish. “However, it’s all the heroes behind their computers. “I just ignore it.” Even though the Goannas’ squad went on to beat Souths 20-6 and captured the honours at the Maitland Sportsground in October, Edwards admitted that victory wasn’t the most pleasing aspect of Cessnock’s campaign.

“This is going to sound funny, but it was the low maintenance group at the club,” he said. “There were no whingers, there were no egos. Sixty per cent of the squad were boys who came through the ranks at Cessnock. “Plus, a few blokes from out Singleton way. “To be honest, the northern division region (now known as Greater Northern Tigers) is the best area for recruitment. “The kids are humble, don’t expect everything to be given to them and work hard – they do not know anything different. “That’s why I like them.” Edwards is fully aware the defending premiers’ tag makes 2021 a whole new ball game for the Goannas, too. “We’ve never been in this position before where we have a big red target on our back,” he said. “I have spoken to the players about it – and it’s a rare situation to be in. That means we’ve got to train harder and we’ve got to be better. “One thing we definitely know is that we’re going to have that target on our back every week.”
That might be easier said than done, with many of the 2020 troops bidding Cessnock farewell in the off-season. It’s a scenario which “really disappointed” Edwards. “This is the most bizarre thing, we’ve lost seven members of our 17 from the grand final,” he lamented. “I’ve had two kids go to a higher level, so you can’t blame those boys. “Brayden Musgrove signed a two-year NRL contract with the Newcastle Knights, while Ngangarra Barker has gone up to Rick Stone at the Burleigh Bears. “Then, we’ve got guys going to other clubs or competitions; and some who aren’t playing at all. “Luckily, we have always had that core group of blokes and we’ve recruited okay. “We will be very competitive without putting too much pressure on ourselves.” Ironically, the Goannas will kick off their Newcastle Rugby League season against fellow grand finalists Souths at the Cessnock Sports Ground on Saturday 27 March. - Rod Thompson
sport Hawks elect first female club president The Hamilton Hawks Rugby Club has nominated a female president for the first time in the club’s 55-year history. Lesa Mason took over from Brett Sutherland, who had been in the role for 12 seasons, in early December. Under Sutherland’s stewardship, the Hawks enjoyed plenty of success, reaching the grand final of the first-grade competition 10 times since 2007, winning on eight occasions. Mason’s association with the club began in 1999 when her husband arrived as a player, and she has been involved in growing the team’s junior set up. She said becoming the 12th club president was a “big honour”, but added she had some big shoes to fill. “He’s (Sutherland) done such an exceptional job, winning multiple premierships in that time, [including] five in a row,” she said. “I’m there because I love the club and I have an understanding of how the club works and what the club needs. “I think the fact that I’m female will give a
different perspective on some things.” Mason said the Hamilton Hawks were a “family-based club”, and her focus would be on its role in the community. “I’m really passionate about parity between men and women’s sports, and we have up and coming junior teams, we have multiple junior girls’ teams, and we have a great women’s team as well,” she added. “I’m all about fair and equal, and everybody being one club and working within the community – we have a great partnership with ‘Got Your Back Sista‘, a [Newcastle-based] domestic violence charity.” The Hawks face a new challenge this year as, in December, the Hunter Wildfires were invited to become permanent members of the Shute Shield, the premier competition for rugby in NSW. Current Wildfires coach Scott Coleman – the Hawks’ former coach and Hall of Fame member – invited 13 of the Hawks first-grade squad to trial for the Wildfires set up. Ms Mason said Shute Shield membership

would enable Newcastle’s best players to showcase their abilities. “For the senior players in the area, it’s a great pathway for them to be noticed, take their game to the next level, and develop their skills,” she said. “And those players that do come back to the club, they’re going to bring that skillset back and pass that on to the club players.” - Calum Thomson

BLUEHEATH AT THE BOWER Many retirees view downsizing as simply moving from a larger home to a smaller one. A free seminar, coming to Medowie, will feature guest speaker and downsizing expert Rachel Lane, as well as a panel of experts, who will unpack the commonly held myths and provide valuable tips for local seniors. The seminar is hosted by Principle Living. Jeff McCloy, one of Principle Living’s Founding Directors, said the company warmly encourages local retirees to come along and find out more from renowned industry experts so they can make informed plans about downsizing. “Given the current real estate market in Medowie, we have seen extraordinary demand in our residential developments and strong
Rachel Lane
interest in our new retirement village, Blueheath at The Bower.” Mr McCloy sees the popularity of regional areas located near major urban centres, like Newcastle, as a direct impact of changed work conditions prompted by the pandemic in 2020. Families are relocating out of Sydney and bringing a new wave of potential buyers to the region who are looking at larger homes for growing families, providing a buoyant seller’s market for those looking to downsize. “We believe the attraction of the area with its proximity to beaches,
vineyards, everyday shopping and health services, has prompted a number of seniors to think about downsizing in Medowie, but they may be unaware of the options available to them,” Mr McCloy said. The free seminar is on Thursday 11 March.
Principle Living indicated bookings are essential before Monday 8 March as numbers are limited. Visit blueheath.com.au or call 0421 888 115 to find out more about the ‘Myths and Tips of Downsizing’ seminar.

Street Paws Festival bounds into the city Calling all dog lovers! An event this Sunday 7 March will be perfect for you. The Street Paws Festival returns to Newcastle to celebrate everything to do with man’s best friend. From humble beginnings three years ago, the festival has become an important fundraising and awareness tool for local rescue services, such as Dog Rescue Newcastle and Tiki Animal Rescue. “It all started in Marrickville in Sydney,” event organiser Sharon Garrard said. “It was meant to be a small event for a couple of pet stalls, but it turned into a big one very quickly. “Street Paws Festival started for so many different reasons but one of the main things we stand for is adopt, don’t shop. “We thought it was important to
shine a light on what animal rescue services do because they work so hard, and we fundraise whenever we possibly can. “This year there’s pet stores, food trucks, kid’s activities, competitions and giveaways.” After postponing a number of functions due to COVID-19, Sharon says the team is very excited to be returning to the calendar. “We did have a lot of events [scheduled] last year but Newcastle was our last one in February 2020 before coronavirus hit,” she said. “We have COVIDSafe measures in place. “There is an entry and exit point at the event and we will keep an eye on numbers. “As long as there is a good flow of people and everyone is social distancing, it should be okay.”

Sharon added the attending rescue services would likely have some of the dogs that are available for fostering or adoption with them. “If you are looking for an opportunity to find a forever friend, you may just find one,” she said. “We’ve had some really good success stories where dogs have been adopted at the event.” Weather permitting, it is all due to start at 10am at The Station in Newcastle (corner of Scott and Watt streets).
Sharon invited everyone to come along (with their pooches) to enjoy the fun and free event. “Come and enjoy all the dogs, every shape and size and breed,” she said. “For people attending with a dog, all dogs need to be on leash and wellbehaved and people need to pick up their poo.” To stay up-to-date with the event, visit the Street Paws Festival Facebook page. - Elizabeth Symington

Christine Bramble’s new book profiles WWI nurse Matron Ida Mary Greaves. Photo: Peter Stoop
Newcastle author sheds light on nurses’ dedication amid the war A Newcastle-based author is shedding light on the work of the Hunter’s nurses during the First World War. Hamilton North’s Christine Bramble is set to release a new book that profiles Novocastrian WWI nurse Matron Ida Mary Greaves, who she describes as “the Australian hero you’ve hardly heard of”. Ms Bramble has previously released two books on the involvement of Hunter residents
during WWI – Sisters of the Valley and Broadmeadow to Villers Bretonneux: People of the Hunter and the Great War. She said her initial interest in the stories of the Hunter’s WWI nurses came from her time working at the Newcastle Regional Museum. “Back in the 1990s, we had developed an exhibition on the First World War, and people from the Hunter [that were] involved in it,” she explained. “My part of the research was

to be on how it [WWI] impacted women both at home and joining various nursing services. “After I left the museum, I had a whole lot of interesting material that I accumulated over the years, and I decided to turn that into a book called Sisters of the Valley.” The idea for the new book came about when Ms Bramble was contacted by a relative of Ida Greaves, with the offer of documentation and photographs from her [Ms Greaves’] time in the war. Matron Ida Greaves – a Right Daughter of Australia, a “labour of love” seven years in the making, is the story of a Newcastle girl who was one of the first Australian nurses on the ground in France in 1914. “Ida happened to be in England when war was declared, and she became part of an independent unit called the Australian Voluntary Hospital, which was approved by the War Office in Britain [rather than by an Australian war authority],” she said. “When she was awarded the Royal Cross in 1915, every major newspaper and various regional newspapers had her story. “Everyone knew who Ida Greaves was if they read the paper.” She explained that roughly 3,000 Australian women joined nursing services during WWI and said that, while “some of the names are well known, [they’re] not necessarily remembered as well as they should have been”. “They came back from their experiences in Gallipoli, France and Belgium, and so on, and quietly slipped back into civilian life,” Ms Bramble said. “Ida herself came home and set up a private hospital on Church Street with another nurse and she was well known in town at the time – she was referred to as the district’s senior warden. She quietly slipped into oblivion after she died in 1954.” Matron Ida Greaves – a Right Daughter of Australia will be released tomorrow (Friday 5 March). - Calum Thomson

THE NEW MEL BROOKS MUSICAL Hello Holt artist Kristy Elley will feature in Blackstone Gallery’s MISTRESS 2 exhibition as part of International Women’s Day celebrations.
Exhibition set to celebrate International Women’s Day Blackstone Gallery will celebrate International Women’s Day by exhibiting some of the city’s most talented female artists. ‘MISTRESS 2’ is showcasing the works of 11 artists and practitioners from across the Hunter. Gallery co-owner Marguerite Tierney said the exhibit would recognise the role women played in society and within the industry. “This show is not simply themed around women,” she explained. “Instead, it is a celebration and acknowledgement of the featured artists, what they have achieved in their careers and practices, and their juggling acts balancing life and a passion for the industry.” Shortly after its debut exhibition last year, Tierney said the gallery was forced to close its doors as the state was sent into a COVID-19 lockdown. “It’s great to see this exhibit and concept return 12 months later,” she added. “The emerging artists who have been included in this year’s exhibition have been notably developing their practice and are about to embark on their arts career. “This should always be encouraged and positively reinforced.” The exhibition will include notable Newcastle artists Ahn
Wells, Mayfield East artist Hello Holt, abstract landscape artist Ann Gordon of Stockton, Blackstone Gallery’s own gothic expressionist Marguerite Tierney, surreal pop artist Barbie Procobis of Mayfield and Merewether’s Mila Knight, who won the Blackstone Gallery Works On Paper 2020 People’s Choice Award. Blackstone Gallery co-owner Tim Moran said the exhibit would appeal to many artistic tastes. “The art is stunning – a little bit quirky, a little bit crazy – a contemporary mix of abstract art, surrealist works, and minimalist graphic pieces,” he said. “The work is so diverse and captivating in many different ways.” ‘MISTRESS 2’ will launch with an opening night event on Saturday 13 March. The event includes drinks and nibbles from The Funky Drop, Pioneer Brewery Co., Dirt Candy Wines, Hart and Hunter, Topper’s Mountain and Grandis Wines. ‘MISTRESS 2’ will continue until Friday 30 April. in the garden IN THE GARDEN JUDY SHARPE
Give citrus plenty of TLC this month As I write this column, it is the fi rst day of autumn and quite summery. So much for a change in seasons. I took Arthur – my new puppy – for time out in the garden and was overwhelmed at the amount of limes I picked – probably at least 40. I don’t use them, but my two sons love gin and tonics, and, what is the essential ingredient – fresh limes. I am still pondering why this little tree is so prolific, but then I remembered my son Scott’s
40
advice to his radio listeners: apply Sudden Impact to roses as well as citrus. They both like alkaline soil. Now, outside of my garden, autumn is an important time in the garden calendar. Normally we need to repair the ravages of summer, which has been minimal this year. The amount of storms and regular rainfall we have been having calls for lime on the lawn and dolomite on the gardens to sweeten the soil.
Give citrus plenty of TLC during March. They will have been attacked by leaf miner, which causes new growth to curl. Prune back the new growth. During March, fertilise citrus trees; once the weather has cooled, fertilise ground grown citrus with poultry manure, watering fi rst under the drip line, then again after applying the manure. Two weeks later, apply to citrus food, using the same method. Never use citrus food on container-grown plants as this will cause them to defoliate. Use products such as Bounceback, which are slow release. Spring annuals will soon become available at retail outlets. This year, because the weather is cooler, it won’t hurt to plant pansies, violas and primulas early.

in the stars ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR
CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY
LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT
CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN
You’re in a buoyant mood and everyone will be bowled over by your good humour. Even if things aren’t all going to your liking, somehow you will find a way to rise above your problems and find something to smile about.
You’re in a health-conscious mood and will enjoy shopping for products that make you look good and feel good. You might splash out on a therapy or treatment that connects with your soul. Should you still need some relaxation, you’ll find it by spending time near water.
It is time to expand your world and to give your brain a good workout. You may find yourself becoming interested in philosophical or religious questions. You seem to be filled with confidence and sparkle, and your sense of humour will be obvious to everyone who meets you.
You are in sparkling form and eager to prove yourself at work. This is the ideal time to deal with financial or legal matters that need your attention, especially if they involve filling in complicated forms or applications. Mars is reminding you to concentrate on your health.
LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG
SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV
AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB
Friends and other contacts are about to play an important role in your life. This is a good time for mixing pleasure with business, as you are at your most charming and will be able to impress some important people.
Don’t be tempted to cut corners in important jobs or neglect to read small print on official papers. You have a detective-like mind and if you are your usual diligent self, you will be able to unravel any problems that have sprung up with official documents or close relationships.
You’re in the mood to enjoy yourself and the planets are putting you in a gregarious mindset. Get out your party clothes, let your hair down and start making up for lost time. If you don’t have any events lined up, invite a few people around to your place.
SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC
PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR
It is time to put your thoughts across to others and to get involved in discussions and negotiations. You’ll want to listen to what others think as well as put your own views forward. It is time to focus on creating a greater sense of harmony in your closest relationships.
Happy birthday Pisces! It’s all go, especially on the home front. You could have lots of visitors and enough interruptions to keep you on your toes. Spend time chatting with siblings, neighbours and other family members as you’ll enjoy catching up with all the news.
TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY Jupiter and Mars in your financial sector is good news for your finances as it suggests a windfall, or your earning power will go up. It is also a good time to make some clever investments, provided that you can afford them, of course.
GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE Mars in Gemini puts you in an outgoing and exuberant mood. You’re now ready to take the initiative and to put plans into action; you’ll also have renewed confidence and energy. Rather than sit around and wait for things to happen, you’ll want to take the bull by the horns and speed up many areas of your life.
VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT Mars activates your career zone making you eager to push ahead with your ambitions and long-term goals. It will certainly be easy to make a good impression on your boss and those who count. You will want to take centre stage, even if this isn’t your usual position. This is your chance to put your hidden skills on display.

My favourite things BOOKS
It is hardly surprising that a nerd and scientist enjoys reading. But, while I do devour nonfiction (especially of the popular science and feminist text persuasion), it’s sci-fi and fantasy that inspired me. Any world that imagines messy, fallible human beings, and their desire to be better, improve and explore, will instantly grab my attention.
TATTOOS Tattoos have been a part of human expression for millennia and are addictive once you get your first. The historic people that resided in my homeland thousands of years ago (now modern Bulgaria), the Thracians, would decorate their skin with beautiful depictions of the natural world as a sign of honour. I see tattoos as stories, and memories, and worth the pain and healing time.
CRAFTS
Vladimira Foteva
HMRI RESEARCH STUDENT IN REPRODUCTIVE MEDICINE
Vladimira Foteva (Mira) is a first year PhD student at the Hunter Medical Research Institute, studying placental ageing and its effects on fetal health. Born and bred in Bulgaria, Mira completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, where her Honours research focused on the effects of plastic on unborn babies. After a trip to Rome to complete a Masters, she has decided to reside in Australia. Mira was attracted to Newcastle because of the cutting-edge science at the Mothers and Babies Research Centre in HMRI, where clinical investigations into maternal and fetal health intersect with environmentalism, ethics, education, and art. You’ll typically find Mira in the lab, working on the development of diagnostic tools for the prediction of obstetric complications such as stillbirth – otherwise, she roams the halls, looking for knitting companions, running partners, spooky cemeteries, and interesting conversations. 54
Whether emerging sweat-covered and gritty-eyed from a long experiment and needing a short break, or requiring a soothing, repetitive motion to focus my mind during a meeting, knitting and origami are daily rituals. It is incredibly pleasing to create something with your own hands and mind, and make it a present for someone in the lab to find.
THE PLACENTA I may be biased, but I find that no human organ is both so short-lived and yet so complex as the placenta. Not just a passive transporter of nutrients, it acts as gut, liver, kidneys and lungs for the developing baby, and a well-functioning placenta is essential for health throughout life.
RAVENS If I wasn’t a medical scientist, ornithology would probably be my speciality. Corvids especially fascinate me – their ability to use tools, their empathy and mischievous nature, and their creativity and friendship with wolves are all marvellous. If I was a witch, I’d want one as my familiar.
