From the editor It’s sad to say, but what a duplicitous society we live in. Recently, we’ve seen hundreds and hundreds of people express their displeasure at the government’s handling of historic rape allegations against Attorney-General Christian Porter and the treatment of staffer Brittany Higgins. And, in many ways, it led to the massive March4Justice rallies last week across the nation, including Newcastle, where more than 2,000 filled Civic Park. The crowds, along with local pollies and community leaders, took part to seek equality, justice, respect and fairness in the world. As a father of a teenage girl, it’s something I strongly support. The campaign garnered much exposure not only on social media, but throughout the mainstream outlets, too. However, that’s where the hypocrisy comes into play. Channel 9 and its Hunter-based NBN news services opened with the March4Justice stories – and rightly so. Afterwards, both screened Married At First Sight. Under the guise of a “social experiment”, it’s a program that promotes toxic relationships, bullying and bad behaviour; all in the name of ratings. Sadly, until everyone gets on board, I don’t expect to see change any time soon. - Rod Thompson

news Brayden ‘grins and bears it’ Five-year-old Brayden Grugeon is not like most kids his age, the cheeky youngster has his own superpowers. The kindergartener from Berry Park has faced more hurdles than most adults could even imagine – at the age of three his liver was failing. His mum Kim says he went from an energetic toddler to a very sick and lethargic little boy. “He came out for breakfast and he looked a bit yellow, and I thought that was unusual, so I took him to our GP,” she said. “They wanted him to do a urine test but Brayden couldn’t go. “So, we said we would do it on the weekend and drop it in on Monday but by Sunday he was just not right, I knew something was wrong.” By the morning he was rushed to Maitland Hospital and then referred to John Hunter Hospital.

What came next was a terrifying whirlwind for the small family. Kim, her husband Anthony, and their daughter Ella had to watch their “Bray” go through numerous tests and fight for his life. After the results came back inconclusive, they were rushed to Westmead Children’s Hospital in Sydney. Following a scary few days, he was diagnosed with Fulminant Liver Failure – Brayden’s liver was only functioning at 40%. He needed a transplant urgently. Kim decided to see if she could be his donor, but before she could go through the surgery, they got a lifesaving call. “I followed the nurse out to the front desk and was handed the phone,” she said. “I heard: ‘Mrs Grugeon, we have a liver for your son Brayden’. “I just broke down; I couldn’t

believe it, to be able to receive a donor liver in this short time frame is, and will always be, a gift.” However, unlike most liver transplants, Brayden wasn’t going to have his old liver removed, instead, for a while, he would live with two. He underwent a procedure known as APOLT (Auxiliary Partial Orthotopic Liver Transplantation). Half of Brayden’s damaged liver was removed, and half of the new liver was attached in its place, meaning his own liver could heal. Now, a little more than a year on,

the second liver has been removed and Brayden’s has returned to its normal function. “Bray is full-on and living life to the fullest,” Kim said. “He doesn’t talk much about it but he’s quite happy to show his scar – he calls it his shark bite.” As one of the faces for Bandaged Bear – a fundraising initiative from the Westmead Children’s Hospital – Brayden’s story is highlighting the importance of research and specialist care for seriously ill children. - Elizabeth Symington

news Students make bald move Merewether High School is a whole lot lighter after almost 90 students shaved, chopped or coloured their luscious locks. A tradition in its sixth year, the students participated in the World’s Greatest Shave last week in a bid to help those in need and to ‘shave the world from blood cancer’. School Captain George McNamara said he was proud of what the Year 12 cohort was able to create. “It’s always been a big tradition here at MHS,” he said. “The years before us have done and raised unbelievable amounts of money, so part of the reason we do it is for the challenge to continue that tradition and beating the other years but it is also to help those families in need.” The students have certainly made use of their time, having

raised a whopping $70,000 for the Leukemia Foundation. “At the beginning of this year I was in disbelief that we would make it this far, but I am so glad that we were able to make a big difference and I only pray that next year they’re able to make as much to be able to contribute to those who need it,” George said. Prefect, and one of the lead organisers, Aiden Bottom said they’re all stoked to have beaten last year’s $52,000. “We have smashed that goal and have certainly set a hard record for next year’s group,” he said. It wasn’t just the boys though, several brave girls also stepped up and said goodbye to their locks, including Isabella Bywater and Crystal Lang Piason. With only the slightest look of fear on their faces as they took to

the shave stage, the girls said they had no regrets as it was all for a good cause. Principal Rochelle Dooley says the students have done an incredible job. “It’s an absolutely phenomenal effort, they set themselves the goal of $50,000 and they’ve well and truly exceeded that, they’ve smashed it,” she said. “There are 86 students shaving,

colouring or cutting their hair. “I just really want to credit the year group and the work that they’ve done. “This has been a student-led initiative and it showcases the incredible talents they have, we are very proud of them and the efforts they have made and their impact in making a difference to the world beyond their school.” - Elizabeth Symington

DV charity Got Your Back Sista marks five years Newcastle-based domestic violence (DV) support charity Got Your Back Sista commemorated five years of operation this month. The organisation’s first campaign at Hunter Stadium in March 2016 attracted 500 people. Since then, it has partnered with the Newcastle Knights, City of Newcastle, nib health funds and several other corporate and sporting organisations, including the Hamilton Hawks and New Lambton Eagles, to run annual events. A new video documentary is also in production to support its awareness goals. Founder and CEO Melissa Histon said tremendous community support, but also a disturbing need, had contributed to the growth of the charity in that short time. She started Got Your Back Sista as the charitable arm of the Sista

Code movement to tackle one of the important issues identified by the members of the movement. From humble beginnings – Ms Histon ran the charity from her home for the first year – it has gone on to support more than 500 females. “Our vision is to see women and their children happy, thriving and living independently after escaping the trauma of domestic violence,” she said. “We give a hand up for them to begin again and live independently.” The first person the charity helped was an indigenous woman with a two-year-old daughter who had been living in someone’s garage after fleeing her violent partner. The woman managed to find her own house to rent so Ms Histon organised furniture, bedding and utensils to cook with. “When women and children flee

domestic violence, they often leave with just the clothes on their back and a few personal items,” she said. The support provided by the charity has broadened from helping to set up a safe home to programs that empower, and support the health and wellbeing, of survivors of DV. “With the help of a new, in-house case worker, we support women to

rebuild their lives – by improving their confidence, their self-esteem, their life skills and employment pathways,” Ms Histon said. The assistance includes several workshops and a support group, self-defence classes, the Love Bites program, cooking and nutrition classes. RAAF still flying high after 100 years of vital service When Wendy Horder first joined the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in 1979 it was like opening the door on a man’s world. Assigned to a communications tower at Victoria’s RAAF Williams Laverton Base, the then-25-year-old spent her first years of service with four male tower operators; breathing their cigarette smoke, hearing their crude jokes, and shuffling their Playboy magazines aside to use the shared toilet. “I came from a pretty sheltered catholic upbringing in a small country town in the Hunter Valley,” Wendy said. “So it was a shock to be a part of this world.” “For half of my career I pretended I was a bloke. “I didn’t talk about the kids at work, I didn’t talk about the husband

and I didn’t talk about making dinner so that it didn’t appear that I had other responsibilities.” Fast-forward to 2021 and Group Captain Wendy Horder, who is based in the Hunter, says she’s grateful things have changed within the institution she has dedicated almost 43 years of her life to. “There’s no need to act like a bloke anymore,” she said. “It’s about diversity now, and being a woman brings diversity to the executive.” On 31 March 2021, the Royal Australian Air Force will mark 100 years of service to Australia. For Wendy, the upcoming celebrations offer a chance to reflect on a workplace she now describes as ideal. “I’ve had four children and I’ve still had a career, I’ve reached Group

I’d pick it again.” Her passport boasts stamps from countries including Thailand, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, East Timor, Hungary, Germany, India, Cambodia, Solomon Islands, Samoa, USA and Malaysia. While it was her love of flying that drew her to the RAAF, she never contemplated becoming a pilot. “I think even in those days most people said to me ‘women aren’t

pilots’ and I guess I accepted that. “It wasn’t until 1988 that pilot training was offered to women. “Two females graduated from that first course and one of them came dux. It was really exciting at the time.” The RAAF is now home to four female fast-jet pilots. Wendy is currently working in a number of different areas within the RAAF, including the sexual misconduct prevention and reporting office (SEMPRO).

services would be 25% by 2023. “The Air Force has already hit that target.” The RAAF now boasts employment opportunities for women in both technical and non-technical environments, from engineers, firefighters and pilots to health professionals or personnel and logistics specialists. Yet, while she holds great pride in her industry, Wendy admits there is still room for improvement. Her legacy, before she retires, includes addressing the gender gap in superannuation. “In 1979 equal pay was introduced but there is still a pay gap,” Wendy said. “That’s predominantly because women are the nurturers, they have a baby and stay home for a little while and in some cases they’d take maternity leave at half-pay or no pay, leaving their super far behind men by the time they finish their service.” - Rebecca Riddle

“I’m developing some curriculum for their training on how to manage incidents,” she said. “It's another step forward and another way I can give back to the Air Force. “It’s also another way I can assist the younger generation of women coming through.” A source of great pride for Wendy was her work as director of the Broderick Review in 2013. “Elizabeth Broderick was the sexual discrimination commissioner at the time,” Wendy said. “She conducted a review of the treatment of women in the ADF and it was my job to implement the recommendations. “I think that was fundamental to a lot of changes that we [RAAF] have had. “At that time our chiefs of services agreed to have target numbers of women in all of the services,” she said. “The Air Force and Navy agreed the number of women in the

news A Pearce of history beckons It takes a special talent to play 300 NRL games. And, even more so when you’re the son of a rugby league legend. But, Mitchell Pearce has gone from being “Wayne’s boy” to forging an illustrious legacy of his own in the game he loves. Stepping out of the shadows of his famous father, the 31-year-old will celebrate a rare feat when he leads the Newcastle Knights into battle against the Wests Tigers at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday. It’s a far cry from his debut with the Sydney Roosters, which occurred in round two of the 2007 season. “I played the Cowboys [in North Queensland] and I remember Johnathan Thurston and hooker Aaron Payne carved us up,” Pearce said. “We lost 43-6 however, with

your first game, you’re just happy to be out there to be honest. “I don’t know if there was any extra pressure on me (being Wayne Pearce’s son) but it was a bit awkward when I was younger. “For me, I always sort of shied away from it. Then you get older and realise you’re more honoured about it than anything else – of our name and what we’ve both been able to do in the game. “Now, I’m just really proud. It’s great to be able to represent my family on these types of occasions.” Following that maiden NRL appearance, Pearce donned a Roosters jumper a further 239 times, winning a premiership in 2013 and stepping up on the stage for City Origin, NSW, the Prime Minister’s XIII and NRL All Stars. Even, today, he’s still getting his head around the magnitude of

his latest milestone. “It would have felt like a steep hill – 300 matches – back then,” he said. “It sounds like a long way when you’re starting off in your first game. However, I tell you what, it just goes so quick.” Pearce admitted his odyssey gained further traction after signing with the Knights at the end of 2017.

He certainly arrived in style as well, kicking the winning field goal in the side’s 19-18 golden point extra-time triumph over the Sea Eagles. “My move to Newcastle has been great,” he said. “I’m a very proud Knight now.” To read the full version, go to newcastleweekly.com.au - Rod Thompson

Residents roll up sleeves Community-minded residents across the Hunter are preparing to roll up their sleeves and get “down and dirty” this weekend. But, it’s all for a great cause. Graffiti Removal Day, which is gaining momentum every year, will see citizens clean up “hot spots” throughout Newcastle, Maitland, Muswellbrook and Lake Macquarie on Sunday 28 March. And, now, others are being encouraged to show they love not just their own home but also their local community by volunteering a couple of hours to remove the unsightly defacements. Lake Macquarie coordinator Pam Wellham said Graffiti Removal Day provided a great opportunity for people to go beyond their front fence and reconnect after the impacts of COVID-19. “It’s clear that throughout the

pandemic most people spent time taking pride in their homes and gardens,” she stated. “Where we live also extends outside our front fence and into our local communities. “We are encouraging residents to reconnect by not only removing ugly graffiti but also working together to come up with ways to prevent graffiti.” A variety of projects will occur across the region as part of the day. “Ideas such as murals, planting trees and educating the community to report graffiti are all terrific ways to prevent graffiti coming back,” Ms Wellham said. All materials will be supplied. Residents can volunteer, suggest an idea or nominate a clean-up site by visiting the campaign’s website graffitiremovalday.org.au - Rod Thompson

Ocean Alley to bring surf rock sounds to Civic Theatre

Aussie surf rockers Ocean Alley. Photo: The Sauce

Some “psychedelic surf rockers who make a hell of a mess” will bring a few smooth tunes to Newcastle this weekend. With hits like Confidence, Infinity, Hot Chicken and my personal favourite Up in There, Ocean Alley is sure to put on an incredible show. Guitarist Mitch Galbraith said they’re excited to take to the Civic Theatre stage. The last time the band visited the city was in 2018 for a show at The Cambridge. “It’s great to be back,” he said. “[Last year] there was a lot of frustration and disappointment when we couldn’t do our full year of touring, and knowing as well that everything our crew and staff had planned wasn’t going to happen, all that hard work with no return. “It feels great and it is encouraging that the bigger festivals are getting put on, so hopefully we can go back to normal soon.” The band made use of its time on pause throughout the pandemic though, with Baden Donegal, Angus Goodwin, Nic Blom, Lachlan Galbraith, Tom O’Brien and Mitch releasing their

third album, Lonely Diamond in June last year. “It felt nice to release it out into the world even though we couldn’t tour it,” Mitch said. “We were bummed we couldn’t go out and tour it but we had the music finished and the record done, so we thought it would be mean of us to withhold it from everyone.” According to Mitch, the band is keen to get back on the road and play their new songs. “We’ll be playing a lot of our songs from the Lonely Diamond which we haven’t had the chance to tour much yet, so people may not have heard some of those songs,” he said. “We’re super keen for this year, because of the current situation we won’t be going overseas very much, international tours are sort of off the cards. “We’re looking forward to spending some time in Australia and touring hard here so at least Aussies can get their live music fix.” Ocean Alley will play two shows at the Civic Theatre this Friday 26 and Saturday 27 March. CLEAR SIGNS THAT THE RE T URN OF JESUS IS NEAR The God of Heaven has a plan and purpose with the earth and with all those who choose to become involved. Despite the obvious problems that the World is currently facing, He intends as He has from the beginning, to establish a literal Kingdom on this earth, replacing all the nations and kingdoms that currently exist. His King will be none other than the Lord Jesus Christ, and His return is imminent. See Luke 21, Matt 27v11, Rev19v16 Jesus Christ taught His disciples to pray “Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven……..” Matt 6v9 The Bible has remarkably clear and detailed descriptions of the literal return of Jesus! Every day God is directing events leading to the time when He will take control of human affairs, as promised in the Bible and bring about true Peace and goodwill to all. All who understand and believe the promises of God and who associate themselves with Jesus through baptism, can put their past mistakes behind them and make a fresh start to life again, in fellowship with God, waiting for peace on earth.

Port Stephens Wellbeing Expo advertising moment

Port Stephens Wellbeing Expo co-organiser Chontelle Grecian, iGym Salamander Bay personal trainer James Ekins and event co-organiser Kerri Rodley ahead of the expo.

Health and wellbeing take centre stage at Port Stephens expo

A

place located on Sydney and Newcastle’s doorstep is hoping to rival Byron Bay when it comes to the Health and Wellbeing industry. An expo is set to show all that Port Stephens has to offer in a bid to attract more people to the region. It’s attached to a good cause too, with profits from ticket sales being donated to vital counselling service, Yacaaba Centre in Nelson Bay. Co-organiser Chontelle Grecian says the Port Stephens Wellbeing Expo will showcase the region’s practitioners. “We have a huge range of professionals in the field, including physiotherapists, podiatrists, kinesiologists, yoga instructors, day

spa operators and more,” she said. “This expo is all about showing them off – we have 35 stallholders and a number of workshops. “We have a very broad range of workshops on offer, everything is $5 and what you get is the opportunity to participate in an array of activities. “People can even attend a yoga class before the expo starts.” Other workshops include Breakthrough Toolkit for Continuous Calm with Well and Good, Cultivating Confidence with YouTopia Wellbeing, Mindful Movement with Kinetic Medicine, and Meditation and Energy Workshop with Pranic Healing Hunter. Chontelle added the idea came together about two years ago when

she and co-organiser Kerri Rodley started to look at the sector. “We are both in the wellbeing industry and have backgrounds in marketing,” Kerri said. “We saw a lot of people going to Byron Bay to seek out day spas and things like that and thought we have it all here, let’s put together an expo that shows what Port Stephens has to offer.” The pair suggest taking advantage of the early bird ticket prices to secure your spot, especially for the workshops. “Tickets will also be available at the door but not only will they be more expensive, the eight workshops may be booked out due to limited seats,” Kerri said.

Chontelle adds they are very grateful to their supporters. “This event would not be possible without our three major sponsors, Port Stephens Council, iGym and Nelson Bay Wholefoods,” she said. It will all start at 10am and go until 3pm at the Shoal Bay Convention Centre (34-45 Shoal Bay Road, Shoal Bay) this Sunday 28 March. To be COVIDSafe visitors at the expo will be limited to 200 people. Chontelle says they have the necessary social distancing measures in place. “If we reach 200 people it will be a one in one out scenario,” she said. This current rain seems never-ending

This has to be one of the most difficult garden columns I have written since the Pasha Bulker storm, which only lasted one day and two nights. However, this current rain event seems neverending. Sure, the garden loves rain and we love rain at the nursery, but our “dumpage” rate on waterlogged seedlings, vegetables, herbs and flowers is exceeding the normal 20% average through all the seasons. Damping off is a great problem caused by root rot, which under these conditions can be a problem, particularly with natives such as grevilleas. What to do?

Under these weather conditions, there aren’t any easy answers.

Try moving container grown plants in under cover until the system passes and, if you notice lavenders and other shrubs browning off at the undergrowth, apply copper oxychloride during a break in the weather. Lawns will respond to applications of lime to correct pH deficiency leeched out by the rain, whereas garden beds, especially roses, should be given applications of dolomite. During this autumn season shades of blue tend to dominate the garden, extending from lobelia, which is an annual, through to the magnificence of iris, which can often be sourced through The Diggers Club in Victoria. Intense blue flowers need paler contrasting backdrops such as silver-leafed plants. Annuals can be used to provide variation, try African Queen Marigolds as a background for blue pansies. Plumbago, which will flower when the weather settles, has been abandoned somewhat because of its rampant growth, but keep this pretty shrub in mind as it makes a great hedge.

IN THE GARDEN JUDY SHARPE

THIS WEEK • I thought the rain might deter those pesky little brown grasshoppers I have sprayed with pyrethrum, but am now resorting to Carbaryl or Malathon. • When the rain passes, dust curbitis such as cauliflower and broccoli with dust to deter cabbage moths and butterflies. •

Don’t forget to fertilise citrus this month, remembering not to apply citrus food to container grown plants.

Breathe easy with a bit of meditation When was the last time you thought about your breathing? Like most people you have probably never given it a second thought. Controlled by the Autonomic Nervous System it happens automatically so why should you? The sad fact is that most of us do not appreciate breathing until we cannot do it properly. Not being able to breathe properly can happen for a variety of reasons. A few examples are illness, being held under in the surf or running to catch a train, just to name a few. If you have ever experienced a sudden and unexpected lack of oxygen you will know it can create anxiety, stress and ultimately panic. As a result, our body releases stress hormones in a typical “fight or fl ight” response. It’s also a fact that many of you, on a daily basis, breathe in such a way that your body is not getting enough oxygen and is therefore in a state of stress. As a result, your adrenal glands release those “fight or fl ight” hormones on a regular basis which can result in chronic stress. Many studies have shown that some of the health problems caused or exacerbated by chronic stress include, but are not limited to: depression and anxiety; sleep problems; autoimmune diseases; digestive problems; heart 16

disease; and weight problems. Of course, if you suffer from any of the conditions mentioned above then you should seek medical advice but, in the meantime, there is one simple thing you can do right now and that is breathe and breathe deeply. If you are not sure where to start, try this simple exercise for at least 5 -10 minutes, several times a day. This exercise can also be used in bed to prepare yourself for sleep. * Sit comfortably in a chair with your eyes closed and hands on your thighs. * Inhale through your nose and count to four at a steady pace. * Hold your breath for a count of one, and then exhale, through your nose, also for a count of four. * After a couple of rounds imagine you are breathing through your belly button which helps engage the diaphragm. Don’t be surprised if your inhalation and exhalation count gets a little longer. * If other thoughts pop into your head that is completely normal. Acknowledge those thoughts and get back to your counting. If you like the above exercise you might consider meditation which is a wonderful activity

that helps connect the body and the mind via the breath. I meditate on a regular basis and also include it occasionally with my clients in the gym. As much as I enjoy my meditation there is something else I love, even more. It involves serious breathing and is fantastic for my cardiovascular system and that thing is exercise. Whether it be in the gym, on the tennis court, in the surf or a walk it doesn’t matter. As long as I am getting out of my comfort zone and a little out of breath, I know it is doing me good. Breathing also means that I am alive. So, let me ask you again: When was the last time you thought about your breathing? * This is a regular column written by health expert Stephen Smith from Merewether Fitness Studio

Inspiration will run amok for Lady Gaga during the year ahead and much travel is likely. This is a time in her life to let go of habits, people and negative circumstances that are not for her higher purpose. These situations, people or circumstances may have been holding her back and it is time to free herself of them. This is also a time that any good deeds she does will be well rewarded not necessarily financially but in terms of inner satisfaction and spiritually.

LADY GAGA 28 March 1986

ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT

CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN

The Full Moon on 28 March indicates that a loved one may be pressuring you and you won’t enjoy it. Perhaps they are using a form of emotional blackmail. It won’t last long, but it won’t be much fun in the meantime. It is time to establish boundaries.

The Full Moon on 28 March indicates that keeping the peace at home is almost impossible right now as someone is being huffy and easily offended. You obviously need to discuss certain things with them, but this is not the time. Pick your battles, as the saying goes.

The Full Moon on 28 March in Libra indicates that some of the people in your life are moody. While you might be in no mood to compromise or to consider anyone else’s needs, a little more cooperation by all parties can create a more peaceful environment.

The Full Moon on 28 March indicates that you need to be careful of ego clashes with others as someone is doing their best to undermine you and make you doubt yourself. If you’re feeling tired and insecure, take time out to rest and bolster your resilience.

TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY As Mars squares the Sun and Mercury, accidents are more likely so take extra care. The Full Moon on 28 March highlights your ambitions. However, any progress you make will be ruined if you behave ruthlessly or arrogantly, so don’t be tempted to throw your weight around.

LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG The Full Moon on 28 March indicates that a tense atmosphere is likely with a sibling, neighbour or colleague. Someone is feeling defensive and, as a result, they are looking for an excuse for an argument. There could also be issues involving your car or technology.

SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV

AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB

The Full Moon on 28 March is a time when secrets could come out of the woodwork so be careful who you trust with confidential information. You also need extra rest this week so make sure you get it as it will help you stay strong and healthy.

The Full Moon on 28 March warns you to be careful of what you say as it is likely to be misunderstood. If you are dealing with anything legal, be certain to read the small print and double check the paperwork. Be sure to make time for rest and relaxation.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR

With Mars in quick-minded Gemini until 24 April, time itself may seem to speed up. The Full Moon on 28 March is a time when you could lose your temper over matters connected to your children or family. Take a deep breath to avoid upsetting everyone around you.

The Full Moon on 28 March indicates that you may part with more money than you intended. Also, be careful of judging others on what they do or don’t own. Make sure you don’t become too materialistic as you’ll discover there are more important things in life.

The Full Moon on 28 March indicates that a friend or loved one is being difficult. They’re determined to have things their own way, no matter what it costs in terms of ruffling other people’s feathers. You will be directly involved, and they may try to boss you around!

The Full Moon on 28 March indicates a need to discuss financial matters with those you live with. Rather than getting het up about things, do your best to remain cool, calm and collected. Talk through the issues rationally and they’re likely to be resolved to everyone’s satisfaction.

A race against time, tide, and terrifying tremors Noah’s ark drifts on the open seas with best friends Finny and Leah on board. But, after weeks with no land in sight, food stocks are running low. The fragile peace between carnivores and herbivores could break any second. After a series of unfortunate events, the kids find themselves washed overboard – along with the last of the food supplies. Leah and fellow castaway, their new friend Jelly, are marooned on a remote island. While Finny wakes in a strange colony filled with oddly familiar creatures living in harmony – under the threat of a menacing volcano. In a race against time, tide, and terrifying tremors, Finny must rescue his friends, reunite with his family, and save a whole colony from total destruction.

My favourite things NEWCASTLE – DREAM BIG

GETTING OUT FOR A WALK I’m a big fan of making Newcastle more walkable and cycleable – it’s more sustainable, better for health, and helps build our community. You can often find Toby and I walking around Lambton Park (sometimes late into the evening), along Bathers Way and the coastline, or out at Blue Gum Hills state park.

Declan Clausen

DEPUTY LORD MAYOR OF NEWCASTLE

Declan grew up in Newcastle, attending Lambton High School before completing a Bachelor of Environmental Engineering at the University of Newcastle. Declan was elected to City of Newcastle council in 2015. As a Councillor, he has had a particular interest in the City’s environmental and smart city initiatives, as well as delivering new footpaths and playgrounds. As a dog owner, Declan has also championed projects which support the city’s 44,000 four-legged residents, including the first fenced, off-leash dog park at North Lambton. Declan recently graduated from the University of Oxford with a Masters in Sustainable Urban Development, topping his class with a research dissertation on macroeconomics. He lives in Waratah with his fiancé Steven and Cavoodle Toby. He says that the three of them make a great team. 30

LEARNING I’m a curious person, and love learning new things. For the past two years, I’ve been studying part time in the UK at the University of Oxford. Due to travel restrictions, I was unable to travel to graduate with all the pomp at Oxford, so we celebrated at Nobbys instead.

As the Deputy Lord Mayor, my job is to help promote and improve Newcastle. Having worked elsewhere in Australia, and studied overseas, I’m so proud of our city and inspired by the opportunities it affords. Newcastle has the talented people and scale to be innovative, and to stand out on the world stage. Newy, dream big!

LAMBTON KER-RIA CREEK I spent a lot of time at the Lambton Ker-Ria Creek while at Lambton High as part of its Water Watch team. As a high school student, I argued that it was so much more than a concrete drain. As a councillor, I was pleased to see it become a more natural creek.

NEWCASTLE’S SUMMERHILL SOLAR FARM In 2020, City of Newcastle became the first council in Australia to power its operations from 100% renewable energy, including its own solar farm at Summerhill. With 14,500 solar panels, it’s hard to fit this into one picture. This new renewable energy arrangement is saving ratepayers money, helping improve our environment, and showing that Newcastle can be a clean energy powerhouse.
