Feedback Organic Recovery’s sustainable push in the Hunter

From the editor Newcastle has always been a passionate sporting heartland. Who’ll ever forget how the Knights saved rugby league many, many years ago when they signed with the ARL under the cover of darkness? Or, in more recent times, the Jets staging an A-League grand final at McDonald Jones Stadium? But, over the next week or so, the City’s zeal for top shelf entertainment will be showcased on the international stage. That’s not discounting Tim Tszyu’s boxing bout with Dennis Hogan [last night] at the NEC either. No, the Hunter will roll out the welcome mat for the world’s best surfers, right here at Merewether Beach. While the legendary Kelly Slater won’t be competing, there’s still plenty of star power with the likes of Sally Fitzgibbons, Tyler Wright, Philippa Anderson, Stephanie Gilmore, Owen Wright, John John Florence, Jordy Smith, Gabriel Medina, Jeremy Flores, Julian Wilson, Ryan Callinan and Adriano de Souza hitting the waves. If the Rip Curl Newcastle Cup is a stunning success, who knows what’s next on the “local” calendar? How great would it be to see an event like the Commonwealth Games in our own backyard one day? Until next week, keep smiling. - Rod Thompson

news Ocean Baths preliminary design focuses on access City of Newcastle met a community reference group for the Newcastle Ocean Baths upgrade last week to discuss a preliminary design, which focuses on improving the two ageing pools and lower promenades. Stage 1 has now reached preliminary design stage, with an initial design developed in consultation with the broader community, the Newcastle Ocean Baths Community Reference Group (CRG), and with expert advice on heritage, safety and accessibility. Deputy Lord Mayor Declan Clausen said the preliminary design was presented to the CRG – and showed the iconic bleacher seating remaining with a renewal of the boardwalk. “We’re also planning accessibility improvements to ensure the ocean
baths can be enjoyed by everyone in the community,” he explained. Director infrastructure and property Ken Liddell said part of the pool upgrade included a new pump station, which would enable more effective pool cleaning. “By dramatically increasing water circulation and subsequently minimising the opportunity for algae to grow, the new pump system will allow for increased consistency in water quality and reduce the need to clean the baths only during low tide,” he added. The Newcastle Ocean Baths upgrade is a staged project that will begin with the restoration of the pool and promenades in the second half of 2021 as part of Stage 1. In December 2020, GHD Pty Ltd was named principal design

consultant for the first stage of the upgrade, with the preliminary design to be presented this week to the project’s CRG. Three formal CRG meetings and two focus group sessions have been held since March 2020, with the fourth CRG get-together taking place on Wednesday 24 March. Stage 1 preliminary design includes addressing the undulating
rock bottom while retaining a sand floor, allowing for more thorough cleaning and improved water quality while increasing safety for pool users when sand levels are low. Following the CRG meeting, a concept for the upgrade to the pool and promenades will be developed and presented to councillors prior to proceeding to detailed design, with construction expected to start mid-year.

news Plan underway to map out Munibung Hill’s future A new management plan under development for Munibung Hill, and adjoining slopes, will map out the future for one of the most spectacular but least-visited sites in Lake Macquarie. Lake Macquarie City Council is now seeking community input to create the proposal, which will seek a balance between protecting, managing and restoring areas of high importance on Munibung Hill, and providing safe public access and recreation opportunities. Council’s manager assets management Brendan Callander said the plan would need to consider Munibung Hill’s unique natural character and cultural significance, as well as environmental hazards and community desires. “This is a site with incredible
potential,” he explained. “The 360-degree views stretch across the lake to the coast, all the way up to Port Stephens and across to the Watagans. “So, the potential is there to create something really special for the community, but public access to Munibung Hill is difficult due to a lack of safe formal access.” Council-owned land on Munibung Hill is bordered by the former Pasminco land on one side, and residential development in Warners Bay, Lakelands and Boolaroo. Mr Callander said Umwelt Australia had been engaged to develop a draft management plan, with a study area including the southern parts of Speers Point and Warners Bay, and parts of

Lakelands, Boolaroo and Macquarie Hills bordering Munibung Hill. “We need to weigh up any options with costs, environmental impacts and how it might work in with the surrounding community,” he added. “We need community input into what they’d like to see on Munibung Hill and how they’d like it to be used. “We’d also love to hear from people who have memories of how the area was used historically.” Munibung Hill’s historical
significance dates to pre-European settlement when the Awabakal people used it as a source of ochre. After European settlement, its natural spring was a stop-off point for travellers. Large sections of the hill were later quarried for gravel. Go to shape.lakemac.com.au to have your say. A draft management plan is expected to go on public exhibition later this year, with further feedback sought from the community.

news Local SES Unit Commander hailed ‘an amazing woman’ While the rain continued across the Hunter last week, Lake Macquarie SES volunteers, under the command of Christine Speer, worked day and night answering calls for assistance. The team of 70 attended 600 jobs in seven days. And, they believe that feat was only achievable thanks to competent leadership. Speaking in the aftermath of what the Bureau of Meteorology called a “volatile weather pattern”, SES Lake Macquarie volunteer John Thirkell said Mrs Speer’s actions during emergency situations deserve the recent accolade she received. Last month, she was awarded the Lake Mac Volunteer of the Year award, having dedicated almost four decades to the local community. “Christine is a leader in every
sense of the word,” Mr Thirkell told the Newcastle Weekly. “She makes sure all of her team members are trained up, fully resourced and happy. “She prioritises job satisfaction and she leads by example. “She’s an amazing woman.” Mr Thirkell says despite not wanting to draw attention to herself, Mrs Speer deserved special recognition. “Especially after what she’s been through this past week,” he said. “She’s barely had time to sleep. “She’d work a full day, take the phone home with her and take calls 24-7 and still show up the next day with a smile on her face, ready to guide the team.” Mrs Speer has faced her own personal challenges too, losing

With the NSW SES in 1981, she worked within the catering and radio operations team. She went on to assist with the major bushfires that hit the Lake Macquarie area in 1994, and again in 2002, earning a LMCC award for her efforts. In 2006 Mrs Speer took on the
role of operations officer, honing her skills during the 2007 East Coast Low storm event the following year. In 2013 she was promoted to Deputy Unit Commander of Lake Macquarie City. She received a unit citation from the NSW SES for her efforts in recovery following the April 2015 storm event. By 2016 she was promoted to Unit Commander of Lake Macquarie City. - Rebecca Riddle

cover story Organic farming grown in heart of Hunter Novocastrian latte lovers are playing a vital role in sustainable agriculture. Unbeknown to many drinkers, their morning caffeine ritual has helped convert one million litres of food waste into compost, growing a cleaner way of eating, right on their doorstep. Since the first seeds were sown in Maitland in 2013, Feedback Organic Recovery has grown into a thriving business, all from its plot in Cardiff Heights. For farm manager Matt Rozzoli the labour of love has become a circle of goodness that is close to his heart. After completing his studies in conservation and land management, the 26-year-old developed a passion for sustainability and the environment, landing him his dream role within David Sivyer’s small business. “I’ve always been interested in gardening,” Matt said. “Straight out of school I started an electrical engineering degree that I didn't like. I took a few years off trying to work out what I wanted to do and ended up doing a degree that transitioned
into sustainable agriculture.” Feedback is a community solution with the aim of reducing organic waste going to landfill. The group of volunteers grow sustainable food, encouraging the community to get their hands dirty too. Several Newcastle cafes and restaurants have since come onboard, sending their food waste, including coffee grinds, to the Cardiff Heights site on a regular basis. “Coffee grinds are my favourite compost ingredient,” Matt said. “They help with the smell, and since they've already been ground fine, they'll always be done in one pass-through of the sieve.” The collected food waste is dropped into compost plots, layered with wood chips, and ultimately used to feed the vegetables and herbs grown at the site. “Even the compost plots are made from upcycled pallet wood,” Matt said. “And the wood chips are supplied free from local arborists. “It is a cycle that benefits all involved.”

The collection bins, Matt says, are left with customers and each week are replaced and cleaned. “Part of the strategy is to close the loop in food waste and food production,” he said. “The aim is to localise the production, so people are eating food that doesn’t have to have ingredients added to protect it during transportation, or refrigeration. “Nutrients degrade when plants are refrigerated, fresh is best.” - Rebecca Riddle
Eleebana resident making meditation ‘mainstream’ The words “men” and “meditation” don’t usually go hand-in-hand. But, Eleebana’s Scott Mitcherson is hoping to change that – all in the name of mental health. He’s introduced two initiatives, Making Meditation Mainstream (MMM) and Meditation for Men (MFM), to the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie areas, with a goal to eventually extend those programs further up the valley. MMM and MFM originated on the northern beaches of Sydney by founder Jason Partington in 2019 in response to a growing suicide rate in the region. And, due to its incredible success, including Mr Mitcherson’s own transformation, the Novocastrian is now keen to save lives in the Hunter, too.
“There were about 33 people, in 2018, who took their lives off the cliff at Avalon,” he said. “So, a mate of mine (Jason) started the movement. “It’s a not-for-profit charity. “He began there [at Avalon]: one man, one flag on the beach. “Soon after, other people joined him – and everything’s taken off from that point.” Since December 2019, MMM has provided free meditation at Dixon Park Beach every weekend, thanks to Mr Mitcherson’s hard work. “I was searching for some wellbeing, mental health initiatives for myself,” he said. “I began looking at meditation and came across MMM on a podcast I heard. “I rang Jason, travelled to Sydney,
Making Meditation Mainstream local presenter/facilitator Scott Mitcherson.
and joined them at Avalon. “It was nice and cool, but I really got into it. That’s when I decided to bring it to Newcastle. “So, I kicked off MMM at Dixon Park at 6.30am – and it’s been going for about 16 months. “It has a real community feel to it. “As we say, ‘we get up early Saturday mornings to save lives’. “Now, we are training people to help themselves and the loved ones around them to lead a more calm, connected and conquering life.” Mr Mitcherson said it was
important to break the stereotypes usually associated with suicide, mental health and disengagement. “That’s why we’ve got Making Meditation Mainstream,” the former Kotara High School student explained. “And, it’s not just for men – it’s for everyone. We’re normalising it, demystifying it and taking the stigma out of it. “We are making it mainstream.” If you’d like further details, phone Scott Mitcherson on 0459 555 530. - Rod Thompson

How many recyclables do you send to landfill? It’s a question most of us could not precisely answer but for Glendore Public School saving more than 47,000 poppers, cans and bottles from its garbage bins over the last two-and-a-half years has shown just how much students can reduce their waste footprint. The school’s efforts have been so large, it was awarded a Keep Australia Beautiful Award. Kerryanne Patterson is the teacher behind the recycling initiative and says they’re honoured to have won the Return and Earn Litter Prevention Award. “We were pleased to win because we were up against a big number of schools,” she said. “To be rewarded for what we’ve done is incredible – it was empowering because it’s given us the opportunity to talk to other schools and share what we do.” The idea began through discussions Ms Patterson was having in her classroom. “We started off through science looking at sustainability and we had to come up with ideas that we could implement and change in the school itself,” she said. “So the students looked at turning off lights and fixing dripping taps to reduce the impact
we have on the environment. “Then we did an audit of the school and noticed we had a large amount of rubbish that went from what we ate or drank into the bins, so we wanted to look at ways we could reduce our impact on the environment. “One of the students came up with the idea that we could use the return and earn facilities to recycle and by doing that we reduced, by 20%, the waste that was going to landfill.” She adds that the 10 cents they received for each item was a huge bonus for the school. “We wanted to reduce the impact we were having on the environment but we also wanted to teach children about recycling so they can do it at home,” Ms Patterson said. “But we were able to use the funds for projects like our breakfast club, our at risk or vulnerable arts groups and also the Aboriginal girls’ group, Sista Speak.” Year 2 student Logan adds it is important to care for the environment. “I like recycling because I like helping our school community,” he told the Newcastle Weekly. “I think recycling is important because we need to look after the planet.” - Elizabeth Symington
Sergeant Bert’s million dollar walk
102-year-old Bert Le Merton. Photo: Peter Stoop
102-year-old Bert Le Merton has not let his age stop him from raising more than $111,000 for a cause that is close to his heart. The Lake Macquarie-based World War II veteran has been walking 7 kilometres each day to raise the extraordinary sum for Soldier On, a support system for Australia’s defence personnel and their families. Since 1 March the spritely centenarian has trodden paths totalling 142 kilometres, in and around his Anglican Care home. He does this as part of a campaign entitled March On in which participants are asked to walk 96 kilometres during the third month of the year – a distance equivalent to the Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea. “They do this because of their [Soldier On] connection to the Kokoda Track,” Bert said. “I suppose they asked me to get involved because they needed an old bloke who was still capable of walking. I’ve been walking around the block at home for ages.” Bert’s daily walking ritual began on the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific Day (VP Day), Saturday 15 August 2020 – the date marking the conclusion of World War II.
He does this, he says, because he is passionate about the mental health of returned servicemen and women. “I really got into it because I had a concern that present day personnel were retiring from the service and many of them were incapable of returning to civilian life,” he said. “It's a problem I never had when I retired after my five-and-a-half-year service, I simply got a job and got on with life and most of the personnel in my time were doing just that.” March On 2021 has had 6,227 participants who have walked a combined total of 382,000 kilometres and raised more than $1.7 million. Bert’s favourite saying is “If you don’t move it you lose it”. Since starting his march, he has enlisted the support of his Anglican Care crew who have formed ‘Team Bert’ and walk daily with the man they say is “a hero”. news PFAS study set to assess residents of Williamtown A new study is hoping to give the people of Williamtown some peace of mind. PFAS exposure in the area along with Oakey and Katherine are the focus of the investigation, which is inviting affected residents to participate. Led by researchers from the University of Queensland (UQ), Professor Jochen Mueller and Professor Kelly Fielding from UQ’s Queensland Alliance for Environmental Health Sciences are hoping to discover how effective the efforts to control exposure to per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been in the three locations, and why some people’s PFAS levels reduce faster than others. “The project’s aim is to find out whether the concentration of PFAS in

the blood of those who had exposure in the past, above what we would consider normal, is decreasing as we would expect if their exposure has returned to normal levels,” Professor Mueller said. Professor Fielding added the study would test how effective interventions put in place to limit the exposure had been. PFAS are manufactured chemicals that are commonly detected in the blood of many people in the general community. Background exposure comes from very small amounts of these chemicals that can be found in food, water, dust and many everyday products. Professor Mueller said the idea for the study was triggered by a difficult question he received from

a Williamtown resident who asked him how he knows PFAS levels are going down in the community; and he struggled with the answer. “I expected that they were going down but didn’t know for sure, so this is when the research project was born – it came from this challenging question,” he said. People who have previously participated in an Australian National University (ANU) PFAS Health Study have been invited to participate in this research. The ANU has already acquired blood samples from residents in communities like Williamtown and these will be used as a part of the latest study for those who choose to take part. Participants will then be asked to provide another blood sample this year and a further one in 2023 to measure the changes in the concentration of PFAS in their blood over time. “We’re going to be asking them to give us two more blood samples, approximately two years apart and they’ll complete a survey online or via mail,” Professor Fielding told the Newcastle Weekly. “This means we are able to track the PFAS in their blood across three different time points, the baseline when they were involved in the ANU PFAS Health Study and these two additional ones. “There will be real benefits to the individual. They’ll get their own personalised feedback about their health; when you’ve only had one
blood sample taken you get a bit of a snapshot but when you have multiple it’s comprehensive. “They will gain knowledge about what’s happening in their bodies and there is also the contribution to research. “PFAS is an issue in a lot of places, so this study has a large number of contributions to make to understanding PFAS and knowing if the preventative measures work.” Professor Mueller added it may give participants peace of mind. “Personally, I would want to know whether all the activities that have been implemented actually do work,” he said. “I think there are uncertainties around not really knowing if everything that has been done is successful and it is something that weighs on the mind of people. “This is where I expect this study can provide a conclusive answer. “I hope that we will help the individuals to feel confident that the problem is addressed appropriately.” Professor Mueller and Professor Fielding expect the study will return results that show the measures to limit exposure have been effective. “I really think we are going to see PFAS levels going down,” Professor Mueller said. “We know that the levels are going down in the normal population and suspect it will be the same for those who have had a higher exposure to PFAS.” - Elizabeth Symington
Popular Tocal Field Days is back on 2021 calendar After the COVID-19 pandemic forced its cancellation last year, the region’s largest agricultural exhibition, Tocal Field Days (TFD), is back in 2021. Tagged “today’s farming on show”, TFD gives farmers and farm suppliers a chance to get together, share ideas and to buy from each other. Local community groups also benefit from grants issued from the event’s proceeds – a record $40,000 was handed out in 2019. The three-day extravaganza will take place at Tocal Agricultural Centre from Friday 30 April to Sunday 2 May. Event manager Wendy Franklin said the return of TFD in 2021 was great news for farmers and the community. “Tocal connects everyone,
educating people about the importance of agriculture and where food comes from,” she explained. “After the drought and then COVID-19, it is time to celebrate and have some fun – in a COVIDSafe way of course.” Ms Franklin said all the favourite Tocal activities would be back including the piglet races, fencing demonstrations, sheep shearing, horse course display, the working dogs, motorbikes, quads and sideby-sides. Food, wine, fashion parades, art and craft displays, gardening talks, cooking demonstrations and workshops for kids and adults add to the atmosphere, too. The homestead will be open and is the location for the gum boot throwing competition.
Tocal Field Days event manager Wendy Franklin is looking forward to its return in 2021.
Entertainment is provided by local school students who are paid through the Talent @ Tocal program. There will also be robotics and drone demonstrations as part of a special feature on future farming. “We are continuing our focus on bees and beekeeping, which proved so popular last event,” Ms Franklin said. “Tocal Field Days will be a COVIDSafe event with check in and
social distancing required. “Free TFD-branded facemasks will also be at the gate.” Tickets are now on sale online at tocalfielddays.com, alternatively, they can be bought at the gate. Daily tickets are $18 for adults, $2 for kids aged five to 16. Children under five are free. Every online ticket purchase also provides an entry to win a scenic joy flight.

sport Voice for Mining Family Day very close to King’s heart If there’s one date on the calendar that lifts the Newcastle Knights, it’s the annual Voice for Mining Family Day. Every season, Novocastrians’ favourite players run onto McDonald Jones Stadium wearing their specially-designed hi-vis replica mining jerseys to acknowledge the NRL club’s strong connection with the industry, which boasts a significant impact on the Hunter Valley economy. And, in 2021, the Knights will tackle the St George Illawarra Dragons at home on Sunday. Unfortunately, the day – sponsored by the NSW Minerals Council – was drastically scaled back in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But, it’s all systems go again this
weekend, much to the delight of Knights front-rower Josh King. A Singleton Greyhounds junior, and former electrical apprentice, he worked in the mines alongside his father. “For me, due to my family link with the mining sector, it’s a very exciting day to wear the hi-vis jumper,” the young prop told the Newcastle Weekly. “However, it is for the team, too. “I think the town [Newcastle] was built on that blue-collar, mining mentality. “There are so many businesses, other than the mines, that benefit from the industry as well. “The Knights are always thrilled to put on a special jersey and play not just for Newcastle, but the entire Upper Hunter.”

Newcastle Knights legend Kurt Gidley with current players Kalyn Ponga, Lachlan Fitzgibbon and Josh King (right).
Head coach Adam O’Brien recently praised King for his wholehearted effort, which was rewarded with a contract extension at the end of 2020. It also saw him snare a top 17 berth for the Knights’ opening round fixture with the Canterbury Bulldogs last month. “Josh’s work ethic and commitment to being the best he possibly can be is a testament to the person he is and means that he
will get everything he deserves in football and in life,” he said. “He is a great clubman with strong ties to his community. “He’s as genuine as they come. “Josh is deeply committed to doing his bit for the team – and doing it to the very best of his ability.” Local miners and their families are encouraged to cheer on the Knights at “home” in their hi-vis, too. - Rod Thompson

Dorothy “Dot” Burgess at her first 100th birthday party.
Dorothy celebrates muchanticipated milestone Dorothy “Dot” Burgess could not wait to turn 100. In fact, she’s been waiting with much anticipation. “I can’t believe that I’m 100,”
she said. “I was surprised that my birthday had come up, I wanted to turn 100 so very much.” Dorothy, who lives at Bolton
Clarke’s Macquarie View aged care community at Bolton Point, marked the occasion with not one but two birthday parties. The first was with her family last weekend, and the second with the residents and team members at Macquarie View. As a special birthday surprise, she was gifted a Bolton Clarke Centenarian Club teacup to commemorate her special day. “All the nurses here are very good, everyone looks after me,” Dorothy said. “My parties were lots of fun. “And, the teacup is lovely, I can’t wait to have a cuppa in it. “I love a big cup of tea.” Macquarie View activities officer Jenny Mahaffy said it was exciting to see Dorothy’s dream fulfilled. “The whole time Dot’s been here, she’s had a goal to turn 100,” she explained. “It’s exciting to be part of that and to help her celebrate her special day.” Born in Bromsgrove, England on 24 March 1921, Dorothy was the
second youngest of six children. “Bromsgrove wasn’t a big place, but it was nice,” she recalled. She had a happy childhood living in a row of five houses opposite the infant’s school. “When it was snowing, mum would wait until she heard the school bell and then she would race us across the road and put us over the fence of the school,” Dorothy said. “There were lovely meadows nearby that we used to walk through when the weather was warmer. “We even had a large paddock behind our home where we would feed the cows and horses that lived there. “I had a Pekingese dog called Snoops and a cat called Billy.” She finished school when she was 14 and began working at a clothing factory where she made waistcoats and sleeves for men’s jackets. Sometimes, Dorothy wishes she was in her 20s again. “I had a really great time in my twenties,” she said.

Author delves into power of ceremony
Author Joan McCarthy has just released her sixth book, The Practical Book Of Ceremonies for the Southern Hemisphere.
In the age of COVID-19, people the world over have missed out on celebrating the momentous moments that mark the turning points in their lives. If you are just thinking about birthdays, weddings and wakes as the only rituals then prepare to be surprised. Wangi Wangi-based author Joan McCarthy has penned a new book on the importance and power of ceremony (often called the rites of passage), offering readers a glimpse into how ceremonies can bring clarity and transformation. Ms McCarthy describes herself as having a “portfolio career”, working in a cornucopia of different fields, from aged care to modelling. “I spent 20 years in Newcastle as a health educator, but I’ve done many other things besides that,” she said. “I’ve done quite a few different things, before I resigned from paid work a couple of years ago.” An already-established writer, Ms McCarthy has previously penned five books. “The Practical Book Of Ceremonies for the Southern Hemisphere is the sixth book that I’ve produced,” she added. “There’s been three on older women; one on sexuality; and
another called Behind the Label, which is about clothes, and how they affect us, and how they affect the environment.” She said in the time of a pandemic, ceremony was one way to reconnect. “[The book is] very timely, because in this time of COVID-19, around the world, people are experiencing a lot of fear,” she said. “Ceremony is a wonderful and joyful way to transition through life’s turning points. “People ask why the Southern Hemisphere, well, if we’re doing ceremonies around the environment, say the equinox or the solstices, then it’s important to recognise that we’re in the southern hemisphere, and that they occur at different times of the year, than they do in the Northern Hemisphere. “This book offers us a glimpse into that world. “And, how ceremony brings about joy and transformation. One of the most transforming ceremonies I ever did was for a woman who had lost her baby, a stillbirth. “She was very depressed and had become quite withdrawn. But, the ceremony [we held for her] was totally transforming and she went on to have a wonderful family.” Ms McCarthy said her interest in ceremony began out of a desire to honour the earth. “I came to recognise that there are turning points in life that are reflected in the environment – that’s the solstices and the equinox,” she explained. “The cycles of the moon, especially for women, are really important. I then discovered that these were just fabulous occasions.” The Practical Book Of Ceremonies for the Southern Hemisphere is out now, available to buy at marjobooks.com.au - Calum Thomson

Saddle-up for lunch on the run Quality wine, award-winning gin, live music, street art, and a delectable three-course-meal – and all from the saddle of your bike. That’s what Newy Rides founder Ben Ogden has on the itinerary for Newcastle this May. Partnering with acclaimed chef Joel Humphreys, Ben will push the pedal on the fi rst of The Ride Along Series, when he hosts a progressive lunch showcasing some of the city’s best food and beverage providers. The series will include Newcastle’s Earp Distilling Co and Dirt Candy Wine and is aimed at exhibiting some of the hidden treasures the city’s tourism industry has, while riding a bike. “The Ride Along Series is a series of oneoff, bespoke events that allows guests to peel back a layer of various Newcastle identities, getting a behind-the-scenes look at how their mind works by showcasing their wares, interacting with you along the way,” Ben said.

“This is a true ‘Meet-the-Maker’ experience – by bike.” Newy Rides is a bike tour of Newcastle launched in 2020, incorporating “nooks and crannies in town, to the makers, murals, producers, coffee shops and food stops”. Combining his extensive knowledge of travel and tourism and two-wheel pedal power, Ben promises visitors the discovery of the best of Newcastle, by bike. The fi rst of his unique Ride Along events will showcase the cuisine of Humphreys, a former Rockpool, Bistro Moncur and Bodega 1904 chef. The experience starts at a designated meeting spot where everyone is introduced,
letting the day unfold with a specially curated three-course menu including wine pairings riding onwards to each unique stop. “I’ve invited some great Newy producers along for the ride to really enhance the experience and showcase the best products in the region,” Ben said. “Local winemaker Daniel Payne from Dirt Candy Wine will be pouring wine at each stop as well as Cameron Burns from Earp Distilling Co will be creating a one-off for the event.” The event will run, or rather, ride on Saturday 1 and 8 May 2021. Seats are limited. For more information, go to newyrides.com. au/tours/ridealongjoel/ - Rebecca Riddle
Firstly, make your base. In a food processor, blitz your biscuits into a crumb-like texture – not into a fine dust! If you don’t have a food processor, pop the biscuits into a zip-lock bag and bash them with a rolling pin. Put your blitzed biscuits into a large bowl and pour in your melted butter. Mix until well combined. Spoon your mixture into a loose-bottomed 23cm fluted tart tin. Compact the mixture into the base and up the sides of the tin using the back of a spoon. Next, press the base of a small jar or measuring cup over the biscuit base and against the sides to tightly compact, ensuring the sides are a consistent thickness. It should look deceptively similar to a pastry case. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes while you make your caramel. Grab a small saucepan and place over a low heat. Add your condensed milk, sugar and butter. Allow to gently heat until melted, then stir constantly for around 10–12 minutes until thickened. Pour your caramel into the chilled biscuit base and place back in the fridge to set for 1–2 hours. Once your caramel has set, slice your bananas into 5mm rounds and place over the caramel in one or

Spoon the cream over the bananas and finish with a little grated chocolate. Return the pie to the fridge until ready to serve. 33

Easter boasts ideal gardening weather An early Easter is ideal for gardening as the perfect weather, following a good soaking of rain, gives gardeners enthusiasm to dig and plant. Prepare garden beds for winter flowers and vegetables by fertilising with poultry manure. Leave at least one week before planting cabbages, cauliflower and pansies. April is also an ideal month to select newseason Sasanqua camellias, which flower in shades of white through to deepest pink. The planting of these hardy shrubs at this time ensures stability and growth before winter. In fact, when I drove up my drive yesterday, I was amazed to see my hedge in full flower.
Where has the year gone? Plants are a good indicator of the seasons and, of course, Sasanquas begin flowering in March, it just slipped by me. These tall growing, hardy shrubs are members of the tea family, which prefer an acidic soil and are great for hedging. They make great pot specimens, too. One of the easiest perennials to grow for white blooms during April are Autumn Crocus. Check out the great display in Lambton Park, where the rose beds have been bordered with the crocus - my compliments to the park staff. Miserable summer annuals, now

waterlogged, should be removed as April is an ideal month to plant out primula, stock, pansies and poppies, which are traditionally planted on Anzac Day. If planting out spring flowering bulbs, don’t forget to give hyacinths and tulips two weeks in the fridge crisper to trick them as the cold triggers their growth. Remember when planting to fertilise, then again on emergence and when the foliage is dying down. Perennials such as clivia, agapanthus, iris and native violets can all be split during April for re-planting. Enjoy Easter, have fun in the garden and travel safely.

celebrity birthday DAVID OYELOWO 1 April 1976 The next 12 months for David is a time for being more self-sufficient and ready to take a chance. All opportunities should be snapped up after careful consideration. There will be a lot of fresh faces in David’s life, and he will be given the chance to start again in many areas of his life. It is crucial that he be prepared to go it alone and to stand aside from likeminded others. This is the time to push back horizons and open his mind to new experiences.

CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN
Happy birthday Aries! You have a renewed self-confidence and energy. Rather than sit around waiting for things to happen, you will want to speed up your life. However, your ability to put your foot in your mouth is not going to help you win friends and influence people.

Whether you’re warming up a new relationship or reheating an old one, the planets are going to help you to get things going in the right direction. So, grab the chance to turn over a new leaf with someone you know very well and possibly woo them all over again.
You may come up with a sensible way of increasing the value of your home and this may set you off on a course of building or renovating, be it major or minor. Any ideas of this kind could come from an acquaintance or from an unusual source.
SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV
Your curiosity is massively stimulated as Mercury activates the area of your chart devoted to communication. Other people’s business suddenly becomes your own. That’s not to say that you become a busy body, it’s just that many will turn to you for guidance or advice.
TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY You’re going to have to be careful of what you say, in case you reveal something you’ve been trying to keep secret. Anything that has been previously swept under the carpet to keep it hidden from others will soon come to light, so expect some embarrassing revelations any time soon.
GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE Your social life is about to gain momentum and friends will keep you busy. You’ll take a great deal of comfort and pleasure from being with people who are kindred spirits. You are intrigued by how other people’s minds work; they’re being very inventive, and it’s got you intrigued.
your plans with others, learn to use discretion in all your dealings. This is the perfect time for pushing ahead with a brand-new venture as you will get all the support you need and a new business contact will be very helpful.
LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG The focus is on higher education, foreign affairs, and long-distance travel. Possibly some of you are off on an early holiday and others may be booking a holiday for later in the year. If you are studying, you should not have any difficulty passing exams.
VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT Be wary of power struggles coming from within your family. It appears someone is desperate to assert their independence and they won’t care how they go about it. If you put your foot down, this situation could erupt into a full-blown row.

The planets are focusing on your working life and indicate a time to call a halt to any activity that isn’t bringing you sufficient satisfaction. If your health is troubling you, it’s time to get the problem resolved once and for all. Ignoring the situation won’t make it go away.
SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC You are in the mood for fun and shopping and the thought of going to the sales and picking up a few bargains is almost impossible to resist. The trouble is that you could wind up spending more than you intended, but at least you will have a good time.

An intimate drama about love and mortality It is deep autumn and Sam (Colin Firth) and Tusker (Stanley Tucci), partners of twenty years, are on holiday. They are travelling across England in their old campervan visiting friends, family and places from their past. Since Tusker was diagnosed with young-onset dementia two years ago their lives have had to
change. Jobs have been given up and plans put on hold. Their time together is now the most important thing they have. As the trip progresses, their individual ideas for their future begin to collide. Secrets are uncovered, private plans unravel and their love for each other is tested like never
before. Ultimately, they must confront the question of what it means to love one another in the face of Tusker’s irreparable illness. Supernova is an intimate drama about love and mortality written and directed by award-winning actor turned filmmaker Harry Macqueen.

My favourite things
HISTORY I was once told that to be truly Novocastrian you needed at least two grandparents buried at Sandgate Cemetery. My direct family comes from Sydney, but some first came to the Hunter from Scotland in the 1840s. My GGGGfather, John McLean, had a fascinating career in rail and the port – I’d love to interview him. I now live not far from where he lived, so I’m actually very Novocastrian after all!
NEWCASTLE I’ve often felt that the people who are hardest on Newcastle are Novocastrians. Perhaps when you grow up in a place, it’s easy for you to see the difficult bits. But I’ve always found this city to be incredible and I’ve tried to make it a priority to do things that encourage people to see Newcastle the way I do. I love it.
Carol Duncan FOUNDER OF LOST NEWCASTLE
Elected to City of Newcastle council in 2017 after a 30-year career in radio and the Australian music industry, Carol is perhaps best known to Novocastrians for her 14 years as an ABC Radio presenter. “I came to Newcastle in 1993 to host a commercial radio breakfast show, but I loved my move to the public broadcaster,” she said. “I think that’s where I really worked out what was important to me. That’s people.” Carol is also the founder of the popular Lost Newcastle Facebook group which now has around 60,000 members. “I never envisioned a political career and I still don’t think of what I do as being particularly political - although with a former Mayor of Sydney up my family tree perhaps I should have known,” she said. “I try to help my community, my neighbours with issues that affect them; and I try to contribute to building the best City of Newcastle for our kids and grandkids that I possibly can. I think of my job as doing that, and then getting out of their way. I’m really proud to be part of the team.”
MY FAMILY I couldn’t have done any of the incredible things I’ve been fortunate to do without the support of my husband and our two now-adult sons, and my gorgeous Dad. They’re the best humans I know. I’m so lucky to have this tiny group of ferocious supporters around me – there’s no-one I’d rather hang out with.
TRAVEL I really only started to travel over the last decade and it’s one of the things I miss at the moment. Again, I think people are one reason I love visiting other parts of the world. I love flights, I love big cities, but I also love that immense feeling of anonymity that I get. It’s magical.
SOUND After a lifetime in radio and music, that’s probably not surprising. It’s often said that sound is the first of our senses to come to life when we hear our mother’s heartbeat in the womb. I don’t know if that’s true. The sirens, the birds – amazing. One of my favourite local talents is Zackari Watt.
