From the editor Social media can be a good thing on most days. Take Facebook, for example, it’s a terrific way to stay connected to friends or family members who are some distance away. Even Instagram and Twitter have a degree of usefulness. But, for mainstream media, it is often the bane of our existence. These days, everyone thinks they are a journalist or reporter because they now boast a platform to air their views or even share information. And, that’s where the problem lies. Too many times, people are quick to assume – since it’s on Facebook – it must be right. For instance, take a serious incident, which occurred in the Hunter last week. No one, at that stage, knew if it was a mental health issue, a criminal concern or a personal matter. But, a single post on someone’s page opened the door for every “expert” to have their say, without knowing all the facts. It really sets a dangerous precedent. My tip; make sure you obtain your “news” from a legitimate and reliable source. Until next week, keep smiling. - Rod Thompson

news Charlestown’s $2.8 million mall transformation complete

The new-look Pearson Street Mall will be launched with an event next month.

Pearson Street Mall has reopened to the public after a $2.8 million facelift. Welcoming an illuminated and interactive furniture experience the Charlestown address is set to be an attraction to the suburb. Designed by Codewise, the fixtures blend gamification with digital technologies and aim to empower and excite children about innovation.

Lake Macquarie City mayor Kay Fraser said the new public art installations and the refurbishment works would help to create a more vibrant public space. “The revitalisation works have delivered safer, pedestrian-friendly access through the mall, as well as new landscaping, mature trees and exciting smart technology used for lighting and street furniture,” she

explained. “The mall is the gateway to our city’s largest retail precinct. “It presents a range of opportunities for revitalising local business and for our community to come together around events, markets, live music and food trucks. “I’m really excited by its potential to become a new hub for Charlestown and surrounding communities.” The Charlestown CREATE design – proudly funded by the NSW Government through the Stronger Country Communities Fund and Lake Macquarie City Council – features of the Pearson Street Mall upgrade bring digital technology, soundscapes, projections and creative lighting to engage visitors to the area. The community is invited to celebrate the completion of the mall and experience its interactive

elements at ‘Live Music and Tech @ Pearson Street Mall’ on Saturday 15 May between 5pm and 9pm. Registrations are essential. The free event is part of the upcoming Hunter Innovation Festival program. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin added the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund was designed to make regional communities even better places to live. “The upgrade to Pearson Street Mall will encourage more activity, offer more spaces for community members to connect and for visitors to keep returning,” he said. The revamp that began in August last year, was subject to some initial scrutiny, however businesses are thrilled construction was completed within the expected timeframes.

news Oh baby! Meet gorgeous Ari Newcastle Weekly is excited to announce that Josh and Jack Bowman-Pinnock and their surrogate Fiona Morrison have welcomed little Ari Rose. Born on Thursday 1 April after a very fast 25-minute labour, Ari arrived at 6.11am weighing in at seven pounds and 11 ounces (3.48 kilograms) and measuring 50 centimetres long. “We are over the moon,” Josh said. “I don’t think there are any words to describe the feeling of holding your daughter for the first time, Jack and I were just reduced to tears. “It’s something we were waiting for such a long time to happen.” Jack added they all adore her. “She is doing so well,” he said. “She is absolutely perfect, she is eating well and sleeping well – she

is everything we ever dreamed of.” It’s been a reward in the making for four years for the husband and husband duo. After they got married in 2018, they knew they wanted to have a child, but it was not until 2019 that they met Raymond Terrace’s Fiona – the woman who would carry their baby. While it was challenging at times, Fiona says it was well worth it and that seeing Josh and Jack as dads is a joy. “It’s been nice to watch them clearly nailing it,” she said. Now, Fiona has returned to her home while Josh, Jack and Ari have moved back to Sydney. They stayed in Newcastle for a couple of weeks until Fiona was ready for them to leave. “I felt really emotionally ready, I don’t feel an overwhelming sense

of attachment for her, she is clearly theirs,” she said. Fiona adds that, other than a fever in the early days of recovery, she feels great and is ready to take on her duties as Ari’s aunt. “I feel good, I have to keep reminding myself that I have just had a baby,” she said. news Tackling the torment of bullying, from the Buddy Bench

Toronto Public School captain Jake Lundy, Assistant Principal Megan Evans, Toronto Private Hospital CEO Sue-Ellen Blomfield and school captain Peyton Greathead welcome the new buddy bench.

More than 75% of mental health issues occur before the age of 25, with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) one of the most severe consequences of bullying. Recent Australian studies reveal that at the time of bullying 40.5% of girls and 27.6% of boys show PTSD symptoms, torment that can follow them

into later life. Last month the Toronto community joined National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence, marking its commitment to stand against such behaviour. At a presentation event Toronto Private Hospital gifted a Buddy Bench to Toronto Public School to help educate children about the importance of inclusivity and healthy relationships at school. The bench is one of 30 that the national health provider, Healthe Care Australia, is donating to schools across the country to help change the narrative. Toronto Private Hospital CEO Sue-Ellen Blomfield said the benches were a symbol of inclusiveness. “As one of Australia’s largest mental health providers, together we are taking action to empower students to rally and unite against bullying and violence,” she said. “Toronto Private Hospital’s Buddy Bench initiative aims to encourage inclusion and friendship among students in the playground and promote positive mental health and wellbeing. “We hope the introduction of this mental

health initiative improves the students’ feelings of acceptance while eliminating feelings of loneliness and bullying in the schoolyard. “[More than] 75% of mental health issues occur before the age of 25, it is our intention that Toronto Private Hospital’s Buddy Bench will help students develop fundamental emotional skills they can carry throughout their educational journey and life.” She adds that “one in every five children are reportedly bullied every week”. Toronto Private Hospital consultant psychiatrist Dr Arvind Kendurkar said there was a strong link between bullying and PTSD but hoped the new addition to school playgrounds would provide safe spaces for children needing support from their peers or teachers. “Without intervention, children who experience long-term bullying are at risk for chronic depression, increased risk of suicidal thoughts, suicide plans, and suicide attempts, anxiety disorders, PTSD, self-destructive behaviour – including self-harm and substance abuse,” he said. - Rebecca Riddle

news Lake Macquarie retirement village residents ‘let down’ A number of Labor politicians have expressed their concerns about changes to retirement village exit entitlements in Lake Macquarie, saying the residents feel “let down”. The NSW Government committed itself to introducing time limits on when retreats could charge for general services, and when they must sell or buy back a unit after departure of an occupant, at the 2019 State Election. Lake Macquarie, as well as the Central Coast, was initially included within the greater metropolitan area, which meant exiting residents would be paid their privileges by the operator within six months. However, new legislation in 2021 means these areas are now considered regional and payments are not due for 12 months.

NSW Shadow Minister for Consumer Protection Julia Finn, Charlestown state MP Jodie Harrison and The Entrance state MP David Mehan are calling on NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian to provide an explanation to the recent modifications. During Budget Estimates, the Minister for Better Regulation and Innovation wiped his hands of responsibility for changes to retirement village exit entitlements. So, Ms Finn, Ms Harrison and Mr Mehan met with residents and staff at the Eleebana Shores Retirement Village last week to discuss the alterations – and their fears. “At least 4,200 occupants in 51 retirement villages in Lake Macquarie have been let down by this government,” Ms Finn said.

The Entrance state MP David Mehan, NSW Shadow Minister for Consumer Protection Julia Finn and Charlestown state MP Jodie Harrison at the Eleebana Shores Retirement Village.

“Retirement village residents have long faced unreasonable delays to receive exit entitlement money before their unit sells but changes were made to the law to ensure they are paid within a defined period of time. “Now, the government has snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. “Just when people in Lake Macquarie thought they would be able to be paid their exit entitlements by the operator within six months, the government has blown out the timeframe to 12 months.”

Ms Harrison said she had been contacted by many occupants who were upset about the last-minute changes. “Residents leaving retirement villages in Lake Macquarie shouldn’t have to wait twice as long to be paid as other people in the same situation in Newcastle,” she stated. “It doesn’t make sense that those from places like Eleebana are treated differently to people less than five kilometres away in the Newcastle LGA (local government area).” - Rod Thompson

Swansea couple Jimmy and Sharnae Berresford.

No challenge too big for loved-up Swansea couple Swansea couple Jimmy and Sharnae Berresford are on a mission to educate people about autism, which was celebrated on World Autism Awareness Day recently. The pair, both autistic, work locally.

Jimmy began working with Ventia in November last year as a cleaner at Swansea High School. He’s one of 85 people with a disability employed by the company on the NSW Whole of Government Facilities Management Services contract.

Jimmy said having a job gave him a purpose and a work ethic. “The job is more than just cleaning the door handles; it’s working for a company putting their best foot forward in the community to have disability inclusion,” he explained. “I like my job because I’m part of something that means something.” Jimmy’s passion is playing pool, and he has competed in Las Vegas, coming fifth in his division, and he plays in tournaments around Sydney. “I’m in a unique position where I am autistic and I understand other people’s autism and I can communicate that to people who might want to hear,” he said. “I think my dream job would be to do that and get paid and have a pool table in my office and become world champion.” Jimmy said for people who were autistic, everything was overstimulated – noises were louder, noses were more sensitive and even

emotions were heightened, which could be exhausting. “Autism is not scary and it doesn’t need to be cured,” he stated. “I think people with autism tend to have more detail-orientated thinking, where most people tend to see the big picture.” Jimmy and Sharnae believe one thing people can do to make those with autism feel more comfortable is “not talk down to us, we’re not stupid”. “Treat them how you would treat everyone else, with respect,” Sharnae said. “We’re humans with thoughts and feelings as well.” Ventia disability and social inclusion manager Daniel Osgood said Jimmy had proven to be a diligent worker who took his job very seriously. “Making sure everything is done properly and the correct way to keep everyone safe at the school is a really important attribute he brings to the school,” he added.

news Kyle’s determined to defend Australia’s championship title He may be embracing newfound parenthood overseas these days, but representative sailor Kyle Langford still calls Lake Macquarie “home”. The talented 31-year-old was last week named in a star-studded Australian team to defend its championship title, on the international stage, in the second season of SailGP. Olympic gold medallist Tom Slingsby unveiled his line-up on Thursday 8 April, a squad consisting of returning athletes Langford (wing trimmer), Jason Waterhouse (flight controller), Sam Newton (grinder) and Kinley Fowler (grinder/flight controller). Nick Hutton will join the Australian outfit as a grinder, replacing Ky Hurst who has stepped aside to spend more time with his

family in Australia. The troop also includes the two successful candidates from the Australia SailGP Team female development program, Olympic silver medallists Lisa Darmanin and Nina Curtis. The pair will vie for the final spot on the team. Langford, who’s competed in multiple America’s Cup campaigns, was delighted to receive Slingsby’s approval once again. “It’s a great opportunity to represent Australia and the area I’m from (the Hunter),” he said. “We’re racing against the best in the world. “Winning the inaugural SailGP title wasn’t easy and, I guess, we sort of set the bar. “However, I’ll admit, the standard

of competition this time around is so much higher. “We’ll be facing teams from New Zealand, who won the latest America’s Cup crown, the USA and Great Britain. “I think going into the first event, we’re the underdogs. “But, we want to be competitive and, obviously, win.”

Langford and his colleagues flew out to Bermuda late last week, ahead of the SailGP opener on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 April. The expanded season two calendar also features six other events, in Taranto, Italy (5-6 June); Plymouth, Great Britain (17-18 July); Saint-Tropez, France (11-12 September), Cádiz, Spain (9-10

October); Christchurch, New Zealand (29-30 January, 2022) and San Francisco, USA (26-27 March, 2022). It welcomes Denmark, France, Japan and Spain, along with Australia, Great Britain, the United States and New Zealand, to the fold as well. If that wasn’t enough, the Grand Prix finale will include a single $1 million winner-takes-all decider. “That’s the beauty of the competition – it’s country versus country – with so much on the line,” Langford said. “We’ll try to execute what we’ve learned and make the 10 days of training (in Bermuda) really effective. “I’ll admit, it will be a tough assignment. “Most of those crews are coming off the America’s Cup. “Despite COVID-19, they’ve been racing at a high level for almost 12 months, while the rest of us have been in lockdown.

“That’s a huge advantage [to them]. “And, let’s not forget either, they are also really good sailors. “So, we’re extremely motivated to beat those guys.” Langford, who was born at Belmont, said Lake Macquarie played a massive part in his development as a sailor. “I have such great memories,” he told the Newcastle Weekly. “I’ve been fortunate to travel all around the world, however Lake Macquarie is still my favourite place. “It’s a perfect, naturally-protected area. I honed my craft there. “I was always sailing as a youngster; and attended sailing school at the Toronto Sailing Club at the age of four. “In fact, I wouldn’t take no for an answer, so my older brother kept an eye on me. “All my family live at Coal Point. “And, my sister is moving back there now, too. “So, it’s still home for me, even

though I’m currently living in Sweden.” How has he adapted to a new lifestyle overseas? “With COVID-19, I wasn’t able to train and sail, which was strange,” Langford said. “However, I got to know the place and the culture better because I had more time on my hands. “I usually fly in and fly out, with just a few days here and there. “My partner and I also recently celebrated the birth of our baby boy. “So, I’m happy to say I’ve experienced the Swedish life the past year. “It’s funny though. “In the peak of winter, there’s only six hours of day. “Then, during summer, there’s just three hours of darkness. “It takes some getting used to.” Langford’s hometown fans will be able to watch him in action on Fox Sports, who’ll air each of the global races on the network, and via the award-winning SailGP app.

A map, compass, checkpoints and unfamiliar terrain are all components of a sport that tests the brain. Whether you run, walk or ride a bike, orienteering is a challenging adventure that is sure to excite. The Scandinavian phenomenon is gaining some traction in the Hunter with more than 100 people regularly gathering to participate in the sport. Newcastle Orienteering Club member and former president Geoff Peel says it “is like a car rally through the bush where you’re the driver, navigator and the car”. “[Orienteering is] one of the biggest unknown sporting events in the world,” he said. “The premise [of the sport] is to navigate around an area and locate checkpoints, known as controls. “It’s a niche sport, we’re not high profile in Australia and the western world. “It is very challenging – it’s a bit like doing crosswords while you are running.” The orienteer of nearly 40 years says the sport can be enjoyed by a wide array of people, as there is something for people of most ages and fitness levels. “It’s not like your traditional ball sports,” he said. “You can go out on the same course with your siblings, parents or friends. “My wife and I venture out with

our son Baxter and there are a few groups who go out with three generations as a family.” He adds that anyone is welcome to come and try the sport with the club. “A membership is not needed for your first few events,” he said. “Those who fall in love with the sport then join up.” Peel believes most competitive orienteers would be fitter than the traditional sportsman, given that high levels of the sport involve running or mountain bike riding while navigating rough terrain and finding checkpoints. Despite some challenges created by the pandemic, the nature of the sport means they haven’t had to change too much. According to Peel, they already kept records of who attended each event to ensure participants returned and were not lost within the course. They also have staggered starting times in a bid to stop teams from following each other. The club’s next event will be at Elrington near Cessnock on Sunday 18 April. This will be followed by a ‘Night Champs’ event at Wallsend on Wednesday 21 April. Merewether surfing duo shines on the world stage While Italo Ferreira and Carissa Moore claimed the Rip Curl Newcastle Cup presented by Corona honours at the weekend, it was the performances of hometown duo Morgan Cibilic and Ryan Callinan which really caught the eye. Reigning World Surf League (WSL) champion Ferreira moved up the men’s rankings to No. 1 after beating two-time WSL titleholder Gabriel Medina in a heated final at Merewether Beach. And, in the women’s section, Moore dominated the decider against Championship Tour (CT) rookie Isabella Nichols to mark her 24th CT win, tying with Wendy Botha for the most CT victories. But, from a local perspective, the biggest story centred around Cibilic and Callinan who, ironically, faced each other in the event’s quarterfinal on Saturday morning. The CT young gun, who knocked out previous No. 1 John John Florence earlier in the week, upset his more experienced rival. However, the showdown wasn’t without controversy, with many experts questioning the judges’ scoring in the three-to-five-foot surf. Cibilic registered 3.00, 0.50, 3.67, 0.30, 4.67 and 5.70 from his six attempts – for a two-wave total of 10.37 (out of 20). Callinan also recorded 10.37 – following efforts of 5.50, 1.97, 4.83,

0.50, 4.17 and 4.87. But, Cibilic, who battled a fractured toe for most of the tournament, progressed to the semi-final with the highest-scoring wave of the heat – a 5.70. Unfortunately, his run ended there at the hands of Brazilian Medina, 15.77 to 14.07. Callinan, for his part, oozed class throughout the event and now sits in fourth spot on the men’s CT leaderboard with 8,065 points. Ferreira heads the list with 16,085, ahead of countryman Medina on 15,600. “Wow what an event,” he said. “It’s been such a good few weeks competing here with all of these guys. “I love to surf heats with Gabriel (Medina). “I know I’m number one now but that doesn’t matter, as long as I have a spot for the Rip Curl WSL Finals at Trestles, then I have a shot at another title.” Moore, meanwhile, dedicated her triumph to her family, in particular her grandma. “She passed away just before we came to Australia, so this one is for her,” she said. “This just feels amazing to be standing number one at the end of this event. “I really didn’t expect it.” The next stop on the 2021 WSL CT will be the Rip Curl Narrabeen Classic, which starts from 16 April.

The Civic Comedy Club on 25 June and 23 July will also provide another outlet for homegrown humour. Moving to its new permanent location in the Banquet Room City Hall, the comedy club offers cabaret-style dining, drinks brought to your table and the intimate type of entertainment that makes for a perfect night out. The club is presented in conjunction with Big Dog Comedy, wrapping up a busy couple of months for organisers after the return of their Newcastle Comedy Festival Gala on 28 May. Life's what you bake it The secret to a good cake is its texture and how long you bake it for. That’s according to MasterChef Australia alumni and Cakeboi founder Reece Hignell. The much-loved Novocastrian opened his first cafe and cake shop in February and the response has been phenomenal – thousands of cake slices have flown out the door. Located on Lindsay Street in Hamilton, Reece says he could not be happier. “The reaction has just been incredible, every day it’s just so busy which we are really grateful for,” he said. “I was saying before the opening day I hoped it would be a sell-out, that was my goal, but I didn’t expect to sell out every day for a month – it’s been really grounding to know that what we decided to do was the right decision and is working. “There is a lot of baking done every day, we make every little thing in our shop from scratch.” What cake lovers across the city may not realise though is that Cakeboi came about because of Reece’s nan. “It’s been an online business I’ve had for a while; I have my Instagram account and have been selling cakes through there,” he said. “I have always loved baking but last year my nan passed away, she passed away while we were recording MasterChef and during filming I was speaking to her a lot to get advice about how to cook her sponge cake.

“Her sponge is my favourite cake she ever made and the year before for my 30th birthday, I got her to make her sponge for my big birthday party. “I had like seven birthday cakes and I got nan to cook me her sponge and it was the centrepiece, it’s just the best cake ever.” During his time away for last year’s season, MasterChef Australia: Back to Win, Reece was trying to perfect his nan’s sponge cake but each time it never turned out as he hoped until one cooking challenge on the show. “We had a challenge where we opened up our Mystery Box and there was a photo of us, it was like a memory challenge,” he said. “[My photo was] of me at primary school during a bake sale and [my nan’s] sponge was there so when that happened, I decided I was going to try to make her cake. “At this stage I tried to make it constantly and failed every time, but I had never stuck strictly to nan’s instructions, so I went into the challenge and made it and it worked perfectly. “I think that moment created the idea of me running this shop, it all evolved from a s@%*ty situation, but it’s created this cool concept that is dedicated to her.” Reece has spent years perfecting the art of cake making, and I think he has nailed it. “For me, the perfect cake needs to have the right texture, and that’s what's really special about ‘old school’ cakes, all of these newer cakes are a bit

too sweet like chocolate mud cake,” he said. “Making sure that it has a beautiful texture, flavour and bounce. “I think the cooking is the most important step, if they are not cooked properly you are going to get a horrible cake. “I take them out the second they are done.” Reece adds he is very grateful for his time on MasterChef and says he is very lucky to have been on it twice. He first appeared on TV screens in 2018 – it was the next step in his plan. “I was working in a job and I did all of the things that were my goals,” he said. “I had a career aspiration that I wanted to achieve before I was 30 and I did that, so I was like: ‘why can’t I change it up?’ “I’ve never been the type of guy to just stick to the same repetitive thing, so that was my chance to try something different and I went for it.” He says returning for a second time was surreal. “I think because of COVID a lot of people were stuck at home in isolation, so MasterChef was like a little beaming light in a way,” he said. “It was received really well, and everyone had the best time, it was incredible, so so incredible. “I think all of us who went on that second season realised the impact and the power of it.” With the latest instalment of MasterChef airing this Monday 19 April on Network Ten, Reece has offered some sage advice. “Don't compare yourself to anyone else,” he said. “It’s really hard not to think about what everyone else is making around you but when you compare yourself to others you are setting yourself up to do something you may not be able to do. “All you can do is what you do best.” - Elizabeth Symington

Newcastle beekeepers Kelly Lees and Anna Scobie are bringing a new buzz to backyards in the city. Photo: Peter Stoop

The buzz about bees They are in almost every backyard in Newcastle. In fact in 26 inner city suburbs they live enmasse – up to 80,000 of them are keeping busy sustaining ecosystems. For Urban Hum founders Kelly Lees and Anna Scobie, they are like pets, each with their own personality, likes and dislikes.

Bees, say the pair, are not to be feared but rather admired. “There is a sense of fear about them for some people,” Kelly said. “But they’re amazing creatures. “Bees sense mood and temperament. They don’t like strong smells, they don’t see the colour red.

“There is so much more to them than most people are aware of.” Long-time backyard beekeepers and avid environmentalists, Anna and Kelly are hoping Novocastrians will join them in embracing their passion. Through their small, artisan enterprise the pair sell honey and beeswax products, offer a bee rehoming service and run workshops on beekeeping. They remain adamant the wellbeing of their creatures are at the forefront of the business. “We never take all their honey, feed our bees sugar, treat with antibiotics or use any chemicals in our hives,” Anna said. “Our hives are managed gently and unobtrusively with minimal interference. “The bees know what to do and we let them do it.” In January this year, Urban Hum launched a program of tours and workshops offering a look “under the hood of a hive”.

“It’s for anyone who has ever wanted to look inside a beehive and see a honeybee colony in action,” Kelly said. “People are often surprised by how many bees are in there – 50 to 80 thousand bees live within a hive. The hives, she adds, can produce up to 30 kilograms of honey. “They produce more than is needed for a household and honey is such a sustainable gift,” Kelly said. The tours began as part of the City of Newcastle’s Product Development Mentoring Program helping small businesses offer more bookable experiences. Since its inception, more than 200 Novocastrians have attended their workshops, with many subsequently setting up hives in their own inner-city backyards, which Anna and Kelly are thrilled about. Ideal time to choose new Sasanquas to plant Easter has passed - the weather is defi nitely colder. I realise I have written briefly about Sasanqua camellias, which are now in full bloom. But, this is an ideal time to choose new Sasanquas to plant. They are available in shades of white through to deepest pink. Planting of these hardy shrubs, at this time, ensure stability and growth before winter. This easy-to-grow camellia are tall-growing, which are members of the tea family, too. They flower from March well into winter. As other camellias, Sasanquas prefer an acidic soil, which can be achieved by prepping with cow manure some weeks before planting. During summer it is wise to

apply peat moss over the root surface. Sasanquas will tolerate full sun or shade. If the soil hasn’t been prepared, it would be wise if planting out a new plant to use an acid potting mix to plant. There are differences in the varieties of camellias. Sasanquas are the fi rst of the tea family to bloom - they produce single or double blooms, which can be grown as a specimen plant in a pot or in the ground. They can be grown as a hedge or espaliered as well. So suitable for along narrow driveways, Sasanquas can be pruned to a narrow space. When deciding on which plant to buy, Pure Silk is ideal for this situation.

THIS WEEK • One of the most popular indoor flowering plants at this time of year is the cyclamen – its brilliant colours from white, through to pinks and true cyclamen purple are great value, especially if at night they are popped out in a sheltered spot in the cold. • Camellias. Japonicas will be producing buds for winter - they could need disbudding to allow flowers to open when winter arrives. • Check preparations for planting poppies on Anzac Day.

in the stars ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT

CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN

The witty planet Mercury’s presence in the aggressive sign of Aries makes you quick and impulsive in your decision making. To avoid issues in your closest relationships, filter what you say. Otherwise, be prepared for those you love to swipe left when it comes to wanting to spend time with you.

There is a strong emphasis on your ambitions and career this month. So, this is an ideal time to put on your thinking cap and jot down your ideas. You’ll be fired up and energised to conquer whatever you put your mind to, whether professionally or personally.

Partnerships are in the spotlight this month. If you and your partner have been taking each other for granted recently, now is an ideal time to refresh your relationship. For singles, this is a good time to put yourself out there – and be direct if you’re after something serious.

With Venus now in your romance sector, it’s likely that love will be drawn to you almost magnetically. Whether you’re single or attached, prepare for matters of the heart to feel especially sweet. This is an ideal time to find someone new or grow closer with your special someone.

TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY

LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG

SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV

AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB

You will be impatient during the transit of Mercury through Aries (6-20 April) and if you are not careful it will lead to conflicts and power struggles. Your desire to tell it as it is and to be direct in your speech will not be appreciated by everyone.

With Mars continuing to heat up the social sector of your chart this week, your presence will be in demand at gatherings of friends or family. Fun or adventure await you. You may also feel ready to explore new territory – be that study, travel or spiritual.

With planets moving through your sector of productivity, April looks like an especially busy month. Now is an ideal time to assess your work-life balance and to ensure you’re taking care of yourself. Perhaps the best cure for any health worries or work concerns is a complete change of thinking.

Exciting news about your career could be on its way, but you may need to check with loved ones if your goals are at odds with theirs to avoid conflict. If you’re in a relationship, romance is a top priority. For singles, it’s a good time to find someone special.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR

With Mercury in Aries until 20 April, your decision making at times will be quick and impulsive, sometimes making you rash, and you will tend not to think before you speak. You will be spontaneous in your reactions, which could make you appear overly confident and outspoken.

If you are employed, this might be a very busy phase at work with Mars heating up your career sector. If you’re looking for a job, this is a good time to refresh your resume and demonstrate your capability to potential employers. Be sure to make time for fun.

Whether you’re single or attached, Mars bring energy to your partnerships this month and now is the time to prioritise your relationships. A surprise admission of feelings for you by a friend or acquaintance could either delight or embarrass you depending on who it is and how they tell you.

With the sun in your financial sector, focus on building prosperity now for future growth. Mars will continue causing movement in the domestic sector of your chart until 23 April. This could manifest as getting the ball rolling on either a renovation or a move to new premises.

SES One of my favourite things is my “orange family”, the people I work with are fantastic, they give up their time with their families to help those in adverse situations. I love it when you can see how much you have helped someone on what is probably the worst day of their lives.

My favourite things

COOKING I enjoy cooking all sorts of things from biscuits/slices to main meals and deserts. I am known for my shortbread.

LOOKING AFTER MY GRANDSON My grandson is now 9 months old and I am fortunate enough to be able to see him regularly. Like all grandmothers I think he is the most handsome child ever with the exception of my own children of course.

QUILTING

Christine Speer

I enjoy sitting and quilting, making something from scraps (when I have the time). All my immediate family have one. I have made a couple that I have donated to remote communities.

UNIT COMMANDER OF LAKE MACQUARIE SES

Christine Speer has been a member of the Lake Macquarie SES unit for almost 40 years, serving the community in a variety of positions from catering to operations officer to Deputy Commander to her current role of Unit Commander. She’s been fortunate enough to travel to other areas and, even though it’s in times of need, it has been very interesting and a new learning curve for her. “The people I’ve met are a delight whether they’re members of the public or other SES members,” she says. “I see SES members as my extended family.” Christine is a teacher by profession, however she has worked for two government groups. She is a mother of three children and recently a grandmother.

CHALLENGES One of the most memorable moments within my time with the SES was riding in a helicopter from Dubbo to near Lightning Ridge to help out in flood waters. I don’t climb on roofs and I don’t go past the third rung on a ladder so it was a big step for me.
