From the editor After COVID-19 played havoc with Anzac Day services throughout the nation in 2020, it will be nice to acknowledge our “heroes” more prominently this weekend. I remember being woken up by my daughter Montana in the early hours of 25 April last year. Due to the nation-wide lockdown, and unable to honour the “fallen” in the traditional circumstances, people came up with unique ideas to commemorate the occasion. So, we rugged up on a chilly morning, lit a couple of candles and stood in our driveway at the crack of dawn to pay our respects. And, it was terrific to see a number of neighbours doing the same thing. Thankfully, this time around, it won’t be such a dramatic way to mark the juncture. Anzac Day is a national day of remembrance that broadly celebrates all Australians and New Zealanders “who served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations”. So, on Sunday, spend at least a few minutes to say “thank you” to our soldiers, past and present. Lest we forget. You'll find a story on Anzac Day on page 10. Until next week, keep smiling. - Rod Thompson

news Wheels in motion for Fernleigh Track’s FAST addition towards Murrays Beach While it might not be time to saddle up just yet, work on the Fernleigh Track extension has begun. Known as the Fernleigh Awabakal Shared Track (FAST), the project will eventually form a 27 kilometre shared pathway between Adamstown and Murrays Beach. The first stage of the $12 million project, including the construction of 1.6 kilometres of a 3 metre-wide pathway on the eastern side of the Pacific Highway, began last week, with initial works located between Hilda Street at Belmont South and Awabakal Avenue at Blacksmiths. The addition will ultimately connect with the region’s most iconic pathway, the Fernleigh Track – the former Belmont Railway line used for coal haulage and passenger transport until 1991. Named after the Fernleigh Colliery, a coalmine located in the area between 1922 and 1932, the track has undertaken several facelifts over the years. Bus stop upgrades, installation of a barrier separating track users from vehicles and a formalised on-road cycle lane for accomplished

cyclists will be included in the latest addition. Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser said that once finished, FAST would provide a missing link between the Fernleigh Track and Blacksmiths to Murrays Beach, creating the longest continuous active transport route in the Hunter Region. “This will be an iconic piece of infrastructure, taking in the spectacular Belmont Lagoon and recognising the area’s rich cultural heritage,” Cr Fraser said. The project is partly funded under the NSW Government’s Regional Growth – Environment and Tourism Fund. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Taylor Martin said more than $300 million had been invested through the fund to support NSW projects that enhanced local tourism. “The FAST project will create an iconic tourism drawcard, it will highlight the area’s natural beauty and it will recognise the deep cultural significance of Belmont Lagoon and surrounding areas,” Mr Martin said.

The new instalment of the Fernleigh Awabakal Shared Track is set to be utilised by riders, walkers and runners of all ages across the city. Photo: Peter Stoop

Work on the southern section will take place 7am-6pm Monday-Friday, and 8am-1pm on Saturdays. Southbound traffic along the Pacific Highway will be limited to one lane with a reduced 40km/h speed limit during works periods. Lake Macquarie City Council Deputy CEO Tony Farrell said the southern section was expected to be complete in mid-2022, with the entire track expected to be finished by September 2023. news Visitors energised by Hunter opportunities For many years, the Hunter has been the heart and soul of countless industries within Australia. And, the region had the perfect opportunity to showcase numerous investment opportunities in defence, aerospace, energy and manufacturing on the international stage last week. A NSW Government-led trade mission, consisting of ambassadors from 14 countries and the European Union (EU), made a beeline to Astra Aerolab in Williamtown, as well as Bohemia Interactive. The group also stopped in at Ampcontrol (Tomago), Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources (NIER – Shortland) and the CSIRO Energy Centre (Mayfield) on Thursday 15 and Friday 16 April. Representatives in the group came from Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands,

Portugal, Romania, Slovak Republic and Spain. From participating in military grade virtual reality training simulations to viewing the world’s first integrated hybrid hydrogen battery, the envoy appeared impressed by what it witnessed. The group also gained insight into Newcastle’s state-of-the-art mineral innovation and learnt about breakthrough battery technology that powers safety improvements for mining and defence. “This was the fifth trade mission in three years and part of a targeted investment strategy that’s making regional NSW a preferred choice for global investors,” NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro said. “Showcasing the Hunter region’s investment opportunities to key global decision-makers will help forge new relationships for local

businesses, inject money into the economy, create new jobs and drive growth. “Universal companies have shown renewed interest in regional NSW off the back of our strong response to the COVID-19 pandemic. “And, we’re already hearing from some looking to expand operations locally and invest in our technology.” Over the two days, the delegates received a taste of the cutting-edge work being undertaken by BAE Systems on the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, the ground-breaking research into the critical minerals industry at NIER, a sneak peak of LAVO’s world-first integrated hybrid hydrogen battery at Ampcontrol and the premier manufacturing and viticulture industries of the Hunter. “Since September 2018, the NSW Government’s targeted regional investment attraction strategy has

secured business investment of $268 million and created more than 1,000 jobs in regional NSW,” Mr Barilaro said. “I’m thrilled to show this corner of the world to potential international investors.” - Rod Thompson

New circular tourism group set to Go

Dr Pheobe Everingham and Sinead Francis-Coan launched Go Circular Tourism Newcastle with the help of Muurrung Marai tour guide Amos. Photo: Peter Stoop

Dr Phoebe Everingham and Newcastle Greens candidate Sinead Francis-Coan are fast becoming the city’s off the beaten track tour taste-testers. Combining their extensive overseas travel experience with insider local knowledge, the pair is hoping to promote sustainable, ethical tourism through their small business ‘Go Circular Tourism Newcastle’. The niche business will focus on promoting groups within Newcastle that are environmentally friendly and promote sustainable, ethical practices. “It’s a shout-out to the people we see doing tourism in a positive way,” Ms Francis-Coan said. “Tourism is an educational and transformational opportunity and we’d like to support local groups who are promoting that.” The pair’s first review submission was for Muurrung Marai, an Indigenous-led tour taking in some of the city’s significant Aboriginal sites. “Muurrung Marai is highly recommended for anyone looking to reconnect with themselves, with local history, with nature, or simply a good day out,” Ms Francis-Coan said. Muurung Marai not only marks the start of Go Circular Tourism Newcastle, but also a sharing of

secrets says Ms Francis-Coan. With Irish heritage and a passion for Irish music, the former Newcastle Performing Arts student admits the best locations within the Emerald Isle are the lesser-known ones, the places the locals go. “It’s never the gig that is advertised that is the good one. It’s the one that the good musicians tell you they’re going to when they’ve finished their set,” she said. Ms Everingham, who is passionate about promoting smaller scale, authentic tourism events, says major events rarely have a beneficial flow-on effect for local residents. “When I see the consultation of the Supercars being extended, the first thing I see there is who are the people they’re talking to. The answer is the City of Newcastle and Destination NSW,” she said. “Where are the local people and the residents in that consultation? “Our role is to try to be that voice and level the playing field a little bit and advocate for our area. “This is our way of having an input in what local tourism is and putting our hand up for the ones we’d like to see at the front.” - Rebecca Riddle

cover story A time to pause and reflect, Veteran says While Anzac Day ceremonies will look different across the region in 2021, residents have been encouraged to commemorate in any way they can this Sunday 25 April. The COVID-19 pandemic has put restrictions on many events, with some even being cancelled. Newcastle’s Dawn Service and United Commemorative Service will still go ahead but are invite-only and the main service will not include a march. While there has been some community backlash surrounding these decisions, Veteran and City of Newcastle RSL Sub-Branch president Peter Green OAM says the region should still pay its respects. “For me it’s that opportunity to pause and reflect on the service of so many who have made such a sacrifice and paid such a price so we could live as we do,” he said. “It is an honour to be able to do it – for starters it is great to be alive because unfortunately there are many others who did not get to live the rest of their lives out, they died so we could live ours.” He adds that expectations for Anzac Day appear to be high in 2021.

,500 card 2 $ us ift Bon aker g em Hom

“I think the expectation for this year is far greater than 2020 because Anzac Day occurred during an actual lockdown where you had to remain at home except for one of four reasons and attending a service was not on the list,” he said. “So, we all commemorated at home at the end of our driveway as we were permitted, but the difference this year is that the restrictions appear to be less but the requirement to keep the community safe from transmission is just as high.” Current Army Reservist Sosefo ‘Sef’ Puliuvea believes the pandemic cannot stop our duty to pay our respects. “The restrictions don't prevent the respect and need we have to honour the fallen and our current serving members who are right now serving overseas while we are standing here with freedom,” he said. “I am happy to have my kids here growing up because it is such a nice country and everyone wants to come here for that very reason and the Anzacs have built that spirit and have made it all safe for us.” To commemorate the day, the City of Newcastle

news Waratah Brass bands hit right note on national stage Waratah Brass Newcastle recently hit the right note at the Australian National Online Festival of Bands. The oldest continually operating community brass band in the Hunter was awarded the highest honours at the event. Waratah Brass secured two platinum and two gold awards in the B grade section, while the junior, learner and recreational players of the local organisation, the Waratah Brass Academy Band, returned home with another couple of golds in D grade. “We’re extremely proud of their achievements over the Easter weekend and the accolades received from all over the world for their musical proficiency and community spirit,” Waratah Brass Newcastle president Darren Nichols said. “The Australian National Band

Championships were to be originally staged in Newcastle and would have seen brass and concert bands from throughout the country descend on the Civic Theatre and Town Hall to compete for national titles in various sections and grades. “However, the organisers, the Band Association of NSW and the National Band Council of Australia decided last year to cancel the live in-person competition and morphed the program into an online music festival, which was live-streamed by the Brassbanned website to an international audience.” The Australian National Online Festival of Bands featured 70 outfits in a wonderful show of resilience and commitment. “All bands are community-based organisations with non-professional

Members of the Waratah Brass and Waratah Brass Academy bands.

musicians who dedicate their time and skill to hours of practice, rehearsal and fundraising each week,” Mr Nicholls said. “Waratah Brass has held the title of national B grade champions since 2019 when they won the crown in Brisbane. “They’ve competed at the top of this grade for several years. “The band is also the current state and East Coast champions in this section.

“It’s an amazing result for Waratah Brass who consistently delivers music at the highest standard locally and on the national and international stage. “It was great to see the Waratah Brass Academy Band shine on their Australian debut, too.” In the meantime, the bands will present a concert at the Warners Bay Theatre on Sunday 2 May from 1.30pm. Tickets are available at the door. - Rod Thompson

Football fan revved up for Knights Rescue Rally debut Proud Novocastrian Carly Moncrieff is revved up to make a mark in the inaugural Knights Rescue Rally. The new four-day fun-filled car trek – from 5 to 8 May, in support of both the Newcastle Knights and Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service (WRHS), will see participants drive from Newcastle to Wagga Wagga visiting beautiful country locations like Mudgee, Bathurst, Carcoar, Sofala, Parkes and West Wyalong. Many of the towns along the route are home to gold, copper and coal mining operations that are a big part of the local economy and community, just like here in the Hunter. The expedition also coincides with the Knights’ NRL showdown with the Canberra Raiders in Wagga Wagga on Saturday 8 May. For Carly, the event is set to be the

adventure of a lifetime. “This is my first rally, so it’s very exciting,” she said. “I’m an avid Knights fan – I’ve been barracking for them since I was six years old. “And, the business I work for (Quarry Mining and Construction Equipment Pty Ltd) is heavilyinvolved in supporting the WRHS. “So, I guess, it’s two-for-one for me; I’ve got the best of both worlds.” Carly is now busily preparing her own car for the journey. “I’ve got a Kia Stinger,” she said. “So, I’m probably driving that [at this point of time]. “It’s a bit of a beast, but it’ll be nice for this event.” Participants will stop into wineries, quaint country cafes and pubs. They’ll also don their best Elvis

suits ready for a night out in Parkes. The escapade then culminates in Wagga Wagga for the NRL fixture, with the rally-goers enjoying many activities including a pre-match dinner with ex-players and coaching staff, before watching the game with some special country hospitality. “I want to raise as much money as I can,” Carly told the Newcastle Weekly.

“I’m keen to just be a part of this wonderful cause – and to help the community.” WRHS CEO Richard Jones added he was “extremely happy” to witness the launch, with the support of event partners Ampcontrol, NSW Mining and BJ Howes. Autumn fair to bring new twist to May Day tradition Come one, come all to the Lake Mac Autumn Fair. The event – from 9am at Speers Point Park on Saturday 1 May – is an exciting new twist on an old tradition. It will draw on the customs of the May Day Fair, which has been hosted in the UK for hundreds of years. And, now, imported into Australia by UK migrants and still popular throughout the country, fairs remain a popular treat at school fetes and community events. The Speers Point Park festivities next month will combine the fair tradition with a full program of entertainment, a range of food and beverage stalls, to make it interesting for the entire family. Coordinated by the Rotary clubs of Warners Bay, Cardiff and Toronto Sunrise, it represents a modern direction for the organisation, with several parties working together to host an event bigger than any of them could manage on their own. “I’ve been really impressed by the way the whole community and local groups have got

behind the concept of the fair,” organiser and Rotary Club of Warners Bay president Barry Knowles said. “They’ve really dived in and participated. “Services, local charities, schools, Girl Guides, council – everyone. “I think it is going to be a great success. Let’s just hope the weather gets in the spirit, too.” Knowles said there would be a range of “traditional” fair-style games. “For example, we’ll have a coconut shy, quoits, duck fishing and cans knock-off, combined with less traditional ones like a dunny roll toss,” he told the Newcastle Weekly. “The police will conduct a fitness test, the NSW RFS will run an obstacle course and give people the chance to experience smokey conditions in a fire. “For the smaller children, there’ll be face painting, a scavenger hunt and train rides around the park. “One of the most popular activities is expected to be the petting zoo, where kids can get close

to an alpaca, calf, goats, sheep, pony, chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs. “Marine Rescue will provide boat rides on the lake and Joy Air will offer a trip in a sea-plane. “To add to all this, we’ll have a big bouncy castle, giant slide, mini golf, a swing ride, bumper balls and so much more.” He believes it will be an event the community will not want to miss. - Rod Thompson

Youth to take to the stage during Young Champions The Lake Macquarie Music Society (LMMS) is gearing up to present its first performance for 2021. Young Champions will take place at the Warners Bay Theatre, located in John Street, on Saturday 24 April from 2pm. “We’re delighted to stage a concert of fine young musicians,” LMSS president Mercia Buck said. “Each year we find a large pool of talent emerging from the excellent studios and schools of the Hunter, as well as Sydney. “They are winners from the 2019 Lake Macquarie Eisteddfod, the 2020 MTA Scholarships and 2020 HSC High Achievers. “They’re our future in the music industry and we treasure them greatly.” Among the performers are: Pianists: Kristen Emseis, Peter Hyslop, Markus Lim, Carlie Ng, Eva Reimann Vocalists: Kirsten Busby, Miles Punch, Layla Rose Schillert, Farin Siddique, Lily Szabo Violinists: Dimitri He, Nicole Nelmes

Bassist: Oskar Sutherland Nicole Nelmes began violin studies at age six with Amanda Gibson and is approaching her final Suzuki examinations. Her music has taken her to Japan, The UK and throughout much of Australia. Merewether High School Year 9 student Markus Lim has been learning piano since the age of nine with Helen Smith. He was a High Achiever in the Lake Macquarie Eisteddfod and he aims to teach piano one day – and, perhaps, get into medical school. Oskar Sutherland learns the double bass from Heather Price. He is a Year 12 student at The Hunter School of Performing Arts and is completing his Diploma in Music Industry through the Newcastle Cathedral College of Music, too. Oskar is also a member of the Peter Seymour Orchestra as a part of Sydney Youth Orchestra. Farin Siddique studies singing with Heather Price. She completed her HSC at Merewether

Merewether High School Year 9 student Markus Lim.

High School in 2020 – and received a successful nomination for the Reprise 2021 Concert, and an encore nomination for her HSC music performance. Farin is now studying Biomedical Science at the University of Newcastle and plans to further develop her skills in singing. Entry is $20. Karstan and Maxine Smith love the boxes that have been created by Your Food Collective and Camplify.

Travellers encouraged to eat sustainably on the road One positive to come out of the pandemic is that Australians have taken to the roads to explore their own backyards a little more. Some camp, others stay in motels and those who have them, caravan. But one thing we often don’t think about is how we collect and consume food on our travels. In a bid to create an industry that champions sustainability two Newcastle-based companies have come together to create food boxes that are perfect for travelling. Newcastle-based online grocery store Your Food Collective creates the boxes while Camplify, the country’s largest caravan, campervan and motorhome sharing community, supports the business and shares their message of sustainability with its travellers. All sourced directly from the farms of local producers, the ‘taste of freedom’ collection includes boxes for a perfect campfire meal. “It is incredibly important to eat sustainably because it is better for us nutritionally and one of the most powerful ways we can improve our environmental impact and it just tastes better and it feels good,” Your Food Collective cofounder Lauren Branson said. “When you are out camping or caravanning you can come back to what’s really important, and that’s simple and sustainable ingredients. “The more of us who can get out

and explore the more appreciation we will have for the effort that goes into growing it. “We are trying to make it as easy as possible for people to get through the week and save the planet. “By partnering with Camplify we’re helping people [do that].” Former contestants on Channel 9's The Block, Karstan and Maxine Smith love to take the boxes on their road trips. “We try to keep it really simple when it comes to cooking on the road, and we always look to support local producers as we drive through towns,” Max said. “The getaway favourites from Camplify and Your Food Collective are ideal, as we know where the food comes from and it also makes cooking on the road so much more convenient, not to mention, extremely delicious,” Karstan added. Lauren says they have a variety of options to suit everyone’s needs, from breakfast boxes, fruit and vegetable collections to more fancy offerings like boxes that include cheese, olives and crackers. Camplify CEO Justin Hales said the partnership was a “no brainer”. “Your Food Collective believes in everything we wish to communicate to van owners and holidaymakers alike,” he said. “Our hope is that the [boxes] that have been created inspire people to live on fresh, delicious food that has

been grown on healthy land as they road trip. “We want to encourage those who book through Camplify to consider where the food they eat comes from and the impact it has on the world, this starts with partnering with businesses whose mission it is to educate

people on how they can accessibly do their bit for the environment as individuals.” For Aussies eager to hit the road, you can book your wheels at camplify. com.au and shop the travel boxes at yourfoodcollective.com. - Elizabeth Symington

in the garden

Autumn hues in full bloom It’s hard to believe we are already in the second month of autumn and the weather is certainly up and down, cold, wet, then warm and sunny again. April is a pleasant time to garden and to take advantage of the growing period still available before the real chill of winter sets in. There is still time to apply lawn food, too. Don’t wait, we have had nice rain to green up the grass and it will help to throw lime around lightly to sweeten the soils for lawns. I am always amazed each year

Now in le t Newcas

when deciduous trees begin to drop leaves. Deep down where their root systems are the ground is already becoming a cold warning of winter. Planting deciduous trees in suburban gardens is often avoided, especially if a swimming pool is in residence. Trust me, they only drop once a year, whereas as evergreens – such as natives – drop leaves whenever the wind blows. The autumn leaves are a valuable source of mulch - don’t rake them up and bin them, they are better under their host tree to decompose. By now old summer annuals should be dug out to prepare beds and pots for autumn planting. Dig in poultry manure to garden beds and refurbish pots with new

premium potting mix. Bulbs should be kept in the fridge’s crisper, ready for planting out before May. Don’t forget to fertilise bulbs when planting. April is an ideal month to divide agapanthus, clivia and native violets. Blooming now are autumn crocus, which is a wonderful perennial that can be split and multiplied throughout

the garden. They are great for borders, it is massed with white and yellow flowers during autumn. One of autumn’s greatest highlights is Tibouchina Alstonville, which is covered in bright purple flowers. Lastly don’t forget to re-pot (if necessary) indoor plants and fertilise with a slow release fertiliser.

THIS WEEK • Give autumn annuals, both flowers and vegetables, an application of Flourish to encourage growth before winter. • Don’t forget to plant poppies on Sunday in remembrance of Anzac Day. • Gardeners are stressing about the little mounds of dirt springing up in the lawns. They are simply earthworms surfacing after the heavy rains. They can be discouraged to return to the garden by applying soapy water which won’t hurt them.

For Dev, 2021 will mostly be about his career. He will be very much in demand and must be careful of taking on more than he can handle. He will need to make some serious changes in his daily routine to cope with the avalanche of work that will come his way. Romantically, he could be quite changeable; on the one hand he wants a loving committed partner and on the other he desires his freedom.

ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT

CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN

The Full Moon on 27 April warns you to be careful in all financial, contractual, and legal matters. You might feel the need to receive more evidence of love, to spend more time with your loved ones and to discard unimportant or difficult things.

The Full Moon on 27 April indicates that children or teenagers could be a source of frustration and you will need to work off any annoyance with some elbow grease. Entertainment and social activities could be increasing and activities on the home front are also likely to keep you busy.

The Full Moon on 27 April falls directly in your financial zone warning you to be very careful in all monetary dealings. Something on a property basis might need repairs that could be costly. Be wary of minor differences with a loved one becoming blown out of proportion.

Short trips that lead to happy meetings are highly favoured. The Full Moon on 27 April indicates you need to watch your words, because as quickly as you open your mouth, you seem prone to offend somebody. A close relative could teach you a thing or two about your joint finances.

LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG

SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV

AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB

The Full Moon on 27 April falls directly in your own sign creating a tense time on the emotional front. It’s high time you had a good talk with your partner to resolve any tensions or frustrations in a loving manner. Take time to relax and refresh.

When it comes to your future goals, listen to your instincts or intuition. Material rewards could be on the horizon. The Full Moon on 27 April puts you in a go-ahead mood career wise, however you need to be careful of acting impulsively and stepping on toes of important people.

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR

Entertainment and social activities with good friends will come your way this week. The Full Moon on 27 April puts you in an edgy mood and other people’s anxieties will have a way of rubbing off on you. So, if you want peace, try to steer clear of moaners.

The Full Moon on 27 April indicates that you long for freedom, romance or the perfect excuse to be yourself but the chores and responsibilities keep piling up and calling your name. Be sure to take time for some recreational or social activities. Travel plans could cross your mind.

TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY The Full Moon on 27 April is a strange time with relationships and you are likely to lose your patience with your loved ones. Sudden changes connected to your work area could occur. The key to this situation is adaptation, otherwise the changes could be very hard to accept.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE The Full Moon on 27 April indicates that old grievances and resentments are likely to cause havoc unless you address them. You might be extra busy with friends or charitable activities, potentially connected to your work or business. Useful news could reach you about your position in the community.

When her meddling backfires, June sets out on a romantic journey of her own and discovers she needs help from the very people she was trying to rescue. In Cinemas 6 May.
