Well, we missed our chance to host one of rugby league’s biggest showpieces, the State of Origin. While the NRL’s initial decision to move the third game of the series to Newcastle’s McDonald Jones Stadium didn’t sit well with everyone, the likelihood of it ever taking place in the Hunter is extremely minimal now. And, even though some residents are patting themselves on the back thinking their petition forced the commission’s hand, the event’s lastminute relocation to the Gold Coast was actually a directive from the NSW Government. They just couldn’t guarantee the community’s health and safety, following the growing COVID-19 numbers in Greater Sydney. On the surface, you totally accept that – no-one wants to put residents at risk, especially during a pandemic. But, did an opportunity slip through Newcastle’s collective fingers? We staged a major fight last week at the entertainment centre, without an incident, and two NRL fixtures recently; again, without any problems, despite more than 6,000 people at each event. Surely, with QR codes in place, spaced seating and stringent checkpoints, the region could’ve shown everyone what we’re capable of achieving in this bizarre environment. I guess we’ll never know. Until next week, keep smiling.

Emily honours twin by raising funds in Dry July While it may be challenging to give up your favourite drink for a month, it’s absolutely nothing in comparison to what someone experiencing bowel cancer faces. That’s according to Newcastle’s Emily Taylor who is participating in Dry July to raise vital funds for Bowel Cancer Australia.

It’s all in honour of her twin sister Christina, who sadly lost her battle with bowel cancer when she was just 30 years old in 2019. “This is my fourth Dry July,” Emily said. “I started in 2018 when my sister was diagnosed, she passed away the following year and we

have just continued to do it to raise awareness of bowel cancer. “Everyone sees bowel cancer as an old man’s disease but it’s not. “We need to get rid of the age bracket persona around all cancers and create more awareness. “Sometimes doctors dismiss symptoms because of your age, they’ll know it could be the worst case scenario but they don’t test it straight away. Detecting it early is obviously key.” With roughly 293 people diagnosed with the disease every week and another 101 losing their battle Emily wants to raise awareness of what she considers is a “taboo cancer to talk about”. “Christina was 29 when she was diagnosed and there was no cause for concern when she went to the doctors,” she said.

“They were initially testing her for Crohn’s Disease or irritable bowel but when she had her scans it showed that it was not that.” While Emily would change the circumstances in an instant, she says their family and friends are striving to create a positive outcome from Christina’s death by helping anyone they can. Emily leads a team of eight for Dry July. Called Christina’s Cancer Warriors they hope to raise $20,000 to help others who may have to face the disease. “It impacted on everything, it was so unexpected,” Emily said. “But we try to take the positives out of it and now we’re hoping to help others and raise awareness – if you can help one person that makes a difference.” - Elizabeth Symington

Quartet celebrates rare anniversary Love was definitely in the air at the Lambton Park Hotel last month. Four couples – and close friends – celebrated a unique milestone. Stan and Jan Pietraszek (nee Tyczyniski), Richard and Lilly Martin (nee Jurgielan), Stan and Lauretta Jurgielan (nee James), and Joe and Mary Konik (nee Kallaur)

commemorated their 50th wedding anniversaries respectively. All of them were married in 1971 and, subsequently, attended each other’s nuptials. The Martins exchanged vows in January, the Jurgielans did likewise in May, the Koniks were united in wedlock in June and the Pietraszeks

tied the knot in July. Amazingly, they all met in their late teens/early 20s – and have stayed in contact ever since. Only Lauretta and Mary were born in Australia. Siblings Lilly and Stan Jurgielan emigrated to this country from Poland in 1959. The others – Jan, Richard, Joe and Stan Pietraszek – were born in Germany after World War II. Then, as two-year-olds, with their refugee parents, the quartet settled in Australia in 1949. After arriving by ship, they were housed at the now defunct Greta Migrant Camp, later moving into the community. The pairs not only relived the good times but shared plenty of laughs at Lambton. - Rod Thompson

Vaccination hub to open A mass COVID-19 vaccination centre with the capacity to deliver 20,000 shots a week will open at a former Bunnings site in Belmont on Monday 19 July. The empty warehouse is being transformed into a purpose-built clinic that includes medical treatment bays, waiting areas, a pharmacy preparation area, staff facilities and public amenities. Located at 393 Pacific Highway, Belmont, the centre will administer vaccines to eligible people as part of the federal vaccine rollout. Hunter New England Local Health District chief executive Michael DiRienzo believes the clinic is a big step forward in ramping up the vaccine rollout in NSW. COVID-19 halts Sleapy’s Day juggernaut again It’s taken a pandemic to halt the Sleapy’s Day juggernaut not once, but twice, in the past couple of years. After COVID-19 derailed the much-loved fundraiser in 2020, organisers were reasonably confident this season’s edition – featuring the South Newcastle Lions and long-time foes Western Suburbs Rosellas – would return to the Real NRL calendar at Townson Oval on Saturday 17 July. But, the Sleapy’s Foundation board and Sleapy’s Day committee made the tough decision on Friday evening to postpone the event until a later date. There’s every hope it will still go ahead in 2021 as soon as the situation in Greater Sydney improves, according to chairman David Fleming.

“We’re saddened to reschedule it; however, it’s not cancelled,” he said. “As everyone’s aware, the NSW Government extended the stayat-home orders, with additional restrictions. “Given the uncertainty of the immediate future, the Sleapy’s Foundation decided it was in the best interests for the health and safety of all our Sleapy’s Day family to postpone it. “When you weigh up the current situation, our event is something that brings people together. “But, unfortunately, COVID-19 keeps everyone apart. “We will adjust, diversify and continue to be unique and find ways to fundraise and support those in the community. “We hope people understand

our position.” Only last month, the man behind the charity and cancer survivor, Peter Sleap, said he was proud of what the not-for-profit organisation had achieved. “It means a lot to me because it’s grown so much,” he told the Newcastle Weekly. “It began with about 30 people, raising $7,000 – now we attract between 4,000 and 5,000 people [to the game] and raise hundreds of thousands for cancer sufferers and people facing adversity. “I can’t speak highly enough of Souths. “When a club like that gets behind you, it not only feels great, but you want to give back any way you can. “We’ve now opened up an office [for Sleapy’s Foundation] at Souths

Merewether. “That’s where our roots are. “And, the partnership between Sleapy’s Foundation and Souths means so much to me.” In just a decade, Sleapy’s Day has amassed and distributed more than $750,000. - Rod Thompson

Family gives Jason strength to fight cancer battle It started out like an average Boxing Day, however it quickly turned into a moment that changed their lives. Last year, Jason Crawley took his sons Jackson (11) and Jacob (8) with him to work to drop off his computer before departing on a holiday. But, as they turned into the site at Beresfield something changed.

Jacob, Jason, Jillian and Jackson Crawley. Photo: Peter Stoop

Jason lost his ability to speak and felt the muscles in his face drop, he knew something was wrong. That’s when Jackson and Jacob shot into action, video-calling their mum Jillian as they watched their dad have his first seizure. Jillian called Triple Zero (000) and the boys spoke with emergency services to explain what was happening. “You have no idea how difficult that was,” Jillian said. “It was so hard for them to be there by themselves and have that happen. “I cannot describe that panic that you feel – you feel so helpless.” Fast forward a few weeks and they got some news no one wants to hear. Jason was diagnosed with Stage 3 Anaplastic Astrocytoma Brain Cancer. What followed was a six-week cycle of radiation and chemotherapy. He is now working through 12 months of maintenance chemo and has regular scans to monitor the cancer. Both Jillian and Jason say the moment turned

their lives upside down, but thanks to support from the Mark Hughes Foundation they were able to get through it. “It was a life-changer when I got the diagnosis,” Jason said. “We found out what’s next and what steps we take and that’s where the Mark Hughes Foundation helped out a lot because they guided us through the process. “We’ve gone through some scary times thinking about what’s in the future for us. “But, now we’re living life on a three-month cycle. You get your scan every three months and if you get a good clear scan then life is good for the next few months.” When it comes to spending time with his sons, who were awarded a Citation for Courage from NSW Ambulance for their swift action, Jason says he is incredibly grateful for the time he has with them. The perfect pear Serves 8 200g butter, chopped, plus extra for greasing

Poached pears

1 tsp vanilla bean paste

230g (1 cup) caster sugar

90g (1/3 cup) Greek yoghurt 4 eggs 230g (1 cup) caster sugar 200g (2 cups) almond meal A pinch of salt flakes

500ml (2 cups) marsala or red wine 1 cinnamon stick 2 star anise 6–8 (about 800g) ripe but firm beurre bosc pears, peeled, halved and cored (bigger pears quartered)

100g (2/3 cup) plain flour 1 tsp baking powder Double cream, to serve For the poached pears, place the marsala or red wine, caster sugar, cinnamon stick and star anise in a large saucepan and bring to the boil. Turn the heat down to low and add the pear. Cover and cook gently for 15–20 minutes, or until the pear is softened and has taken on a lovely deep colour. Use a slotted spoon to remove the pear and place in a bowl. Bring the pear-poaching liquid to the boil and simmer for 15 minutes, or until reduced to a syrup. Pour over the pear, then cover and chill until required. Preheat the oven to 160°C. Grease the base and side of a 22cm springform cake tin and line with baking paper. Photo Rob Palmer

Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium–high heat and cook until foaming. Continue to cook for a further 2–3 minutes until the milk solids turn brown and the butter smells nutty (noisette stage). Add the vanilla, then remove from the heat and stand to infuse for 5 minutes. Stir in the yoghurt.

Meanwhile, place the eggs and caster sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment. Whisk on high speed until pale and thick, about 5 minutes. Pour in the warm butter mixture and continue to whisk for a further 2 minutes, or until well incorporated. Add the almond meal, salt, flour and baking powder and gently fold through until just combined and the batter is smooth. Arrange half the pear, cut-side down, in the base of the prepared tin and drizzle over 2 teaspoons of syrup; reserve the remaining pear and syrup for serving. Pour the cake batter over the pear. Bake for 45–50 minutes, or until a skewer inserted in the centre of the cake comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool in the tin for 20 minutes. Remove the collar from the tin, place a serving plate on top of the cake, then carefully flip over. Remove the baking paper to expose the pear. Top with the reserved pear and drizzle on the reserved syrup. Serve with cream.

A great time to solve some of your garden’s mysteries With COVID-19, and the weather, we are certainly spending a great deal of time indoors, which is a great time to solve some of the garden’s mysteries. I know sometimes when I write about acidity and alkalinity it can be confusing. So, I’ll try and explain it simply as it really is important for many of the plants we grow. Alkalinity and acidity are defi ned by the soil’s pH, which is a scale of values divided into 14 units. A soil test determines the values between 7, which is neutral, and 14 which is alkaline. Soil with a reading below 7 to 0 is acidic. An example is a soil with a reading of pH9 would be very acidic. And, the majority of plants succeed better in soil that is slightly acidic. During wet periods, which we’re certainly experiencing, clay can be a real problem. There are several ways to alleviate this - one is

to apply a liquid clay breaker or digging gypsum into the soil. Then apply new soil to the surface to increase the depth before the roots reach the clay. But, to really improve the problem, it’s better to remove the top soil down to the clay base. Loosen the clay, work in manure, compost and, most importantly, mushroom compost, which seems to encourage earth worms which tunnel through and aerate the soil then backfi ll with good soil, having applied clay breaker or gypsum to the clay prior to manuring. One of the garden’s most popular plants are gardenias, which love acidic soil that can be achieved by regular applications of cow manure (that is ground-grown plants). One of the very important hints to growing gardenias is to keep them well-watered during dry periods, especially when buds are setting as flowering adds stress to the plant.

Land in Hunter Valley township sells quickly It took just four hours for the Huntlee Mega Land Release to sell out of all of its 125 lots last month. After opening its doors to buyers, the sales team for the newest town in the Hunter Valley was inundated with clients desperate to enter a competitive real estate market. Located minutes from wineries

and 50 minutes from Newcastle, the region’s latest land development boasts lots ranging in price from $180,000 to $450,000. Huntlee sales director Robert Crane said the weekend sales result was testament to the popularity of the first new town to be built in the Hunter in more than 50 years.

Hundreds of potential home buyers took just four hours to secure their share in 125 lots at the Huntlee Mega Land Release.

ljhooker.com.au

“Each time we release a new stage, it is snapped up in no time,” he said. “To make the playing field as level as possible, this time we decided to try something different, releasing three stages at once on a first come, first served basis. “As far as we are aware, this was the largest single land release in the Hunter’s history. “By 8am, when we started handing out the price list (which had been kept under wraps up until that point), we had more than 150 groups lined up, ready to take their chances. “That number continued to grow, exceeding 200 by the time we opened the doors and started selling at 10am. “As the clocked ticked 2pm, the ink dried on the final agreement – all 125 sales were completed in four hours.” Huntlee is a master-planned

community that will consist of four neighbourhood villages surrounding a 200-hectare town centre. In total, it will boast 7500 dwellings and be home to approximately 20,000 residents, making it comparable in size to Singleton. Mr Crane says he expects more demand for the township’s lots. “Those [buyers] on the list will be prioritised in the same order in which they lined up on Saturday and will be given first choice of the lots in our next release,” he said. “The great thing about Huntlee is that the next release won’t be far off. “Given our fully master planned town will eventually comprise more than 7500 lots, we can literally produce new stages as the market demands.” - Rebecca Riddle

david will be facing new opportunities to broaden his influence and career, and some developments will be unexpected. He may even be ready to break a mould as he steps into a new field of experience or adventure. A change in his personal life is underway and the more he embraces and expresses his caring, intuitive side, the better for him and for those in his close circle.

Keep an open mind to ways to improve relationships. Consider all the variables in your life and find ways to improve your situation. If life seems intense, ensure you take enough breaks. unexpected news or developments could bring a clever solution to challenging circumstances, so be open to ideas.

you’ll see considerable developments both at home and at work, and these mark big changes to come. Approach circumstances with a balanced outlook for best results. you’ll enjoy a pleasant surprise or a change of plan early in the week. Be sure to plan creative and fun events with those you love.

someone whose opinions differ to yours may have a valid point, so be sure to adopt an open mind this week to avoid conflict. unexpected news or a get-together early in the week may be fun. But if you’re feeling emotional, ensure you cool off to avoid taking actions you may later come to regret.

The better organised you are now, the better the outcome. otherwise, key developments at work or at home may be frustrating, even if developments are positive. There is good fortune in the stars early next week, and some lucky Aries will receive good news. opportunities at work and financially may arise, for some unexpectedly.

you’ll enjoy a catch-up with someone you love and someone close will be in touch. A spontaneous event or activity early next week will be fun. romance could thrive, so make plans for a lovely time. However, some news will signal key changes to come, so just ensure you maintain perspective.

Current developments merit a careful approach to avoid making snap decisions you come to regret. A trip or change of travel plan will mark a turning point. Focus on creating upbeat domestic and work conditions to ensure you have your bases covered. Channel frustrations into a gym workout or nature walks.

Would you like more time to rest and recuperate, or is life dull? This weekend, you’ll get the chance to make changes that better reflect your aims. you’ll experience a strong connection with someone from your past. early in the week, expect news to do with developments at home or in your usual schedule.

go with the flow and aim to improve relationships by keeping interactions upbeat. As a result, you’ll avoid arguments and intense situations. early in the week, a lovely get-together and activity will be uplifting. A trip may be particularly significant. Be aware of long-term consequences if you’re facing a tough choice.

you’ll enjoy socialising and networking with inspiring people. maintain focus on keeping potentially intense conversations on an even keel. you like to be methodical and meticulous in your daily arrangements. sometimes, a little spontaneity is enjoyable too. you’ll welcome encouraging work news.

do you believe that people you love should always agree with you and that you should agree with them? your goals can sometimes differ, and this may be one such time. A loyal friend or a teacher will help you with financial and personal decisions. But be sure to gain expert advice if necessary too.

Would life be better if everyone agreed with each other? sometimes, a difference of opinion can be inspiring. A friend or organisation will be in touch, and news will be significant or even intense. If you are impulsive, avoid snap decisions; you may regret it! early in the week, you’ll enjoy a fun get-together.

you are in line for positive news or a fun get-together this weekend and early in the week. Be prepared to collaborate; work talks will merit a tactful approach. If someone’s ideas are contrary to yours, be patient and base communications on facts. you may experience a financial boost, but must avoid gambling.

PLUMBING & GASFITTING

Have some fun with your kids Kids will love playing Windy Knickers. Can you help Granny put out her washing? Roll the dice…if it's a sunny day, you can hang your washing on the line. Roll a cloud and you miss a go. Roll a storm and you must take your washing in. Be the first to hang out all your washing to win. Who’s going to Pop the Pig? Roll the die to reveal which coloured hamburger to select, choose a burger and turn it over to reveal the number. Then, put the burger into Pig’s mouth

and pump its head the number of times shown on the burger. Then it’s the next players turn. The more you pump, the more his belly grows until… POP!
