But, trying to locate a suitable – and affordable – residence at the back end of a pandemic makes it extra difficult.
12
It’s hard enough to find a rental most days.
I’ll put my hand up; I’ve been on the hunt for a place for the past two months without one ounce of luck. I keep being told, it’s a tough market out there. And, when you see reports, compiled by Domain, stating weekly payments to Hunter landlords vary between an increase of 8.5% (Kurri Kurri) and 22.4% (Swansea), with a number of other suburbs registering 18.4% (Mannering Park), 17.5% (Gwandalan), 17% (New Lambton), 16.9% (Gateshead), 15.6% (Newcastle), 12.8% (Broadmeadow), 11.4% (Nelson Bay) and 10% (East Maitland), it’s frightening. That, in some cases, is $200-$300 a week above the average cost. Sadly, on most occasions, you don’t even get to inspect a home. By the time it appears online, or you receive a text message about an availability, it’s gone. At least someone has noticed the dire situation lately, with Shadow Minister for Housing and Homelessness Jason Clare visiting the region last week. Hopefully, he and Paterson MP Meryl Swanson can make a difference.

news Residents fed up with government’s neglect of Morpeth Angry Morpeth residents have simply had enough of the NSW Government’s disregard towards their much-loved town. To help, Maitland state MP Jenny Aitchison is uniting with concerned locals to call on the powers-that-be to restore the dilapidated Morpeth Railway Station – and give it a new life as a community asset. Once an iconic landmark in the
Hunter Valley, the train depot’s an eyesore on Swan Street. Soil Conservation Service, within Local Land Services, is using part of the building, however it has fallen into a state of disrepair. Now, It Must Be Morpeth Incorporated Business Association and Maitland Heritage Conservation Group want to turn a negative into a positive. The two organisations are keen to

see the landmark premises restored and used for tourism and heritage promotion activities. And, that stance has the full backing of Ms Aitchison. “The building was restored by the NSW Government in 1988 for the bicentenary,” she said. “However, under this latest incarnation, it has been left to rack and ruin – the state it is in is a disgrace. “The NSW Government’s failure to preserve this historic building shows a total disregard for the heritage of Morpeth and the amenity of the local community. The Minister must explain what the government’s future plans are for the site.” A submission from It Must Be Morpeth proposes to lease the premises and convert it into a commercial enterprise that would provide Morpeth with an important
tourist attraction and provide additional economic benefits to local businesses. The local Men’s Shed have also generously offered to undertake the required works so that the building could be used for community purposes such as a café or brewery. “Morpeth relies on tourism and has been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic,” Ms Aitchison said. “The business chamber’s proposal will activate the space for locals and stimulate tourism. “The restoration of a new anchor attraction in Morpeth would enhance work already being undertaken by Maitland City Council, with state government funding, to provide a walkway from Morpeth to Walka Water Works.” - Rod Thompson

High house prices, rents a concern in the Hunter Facing a hurdle or two in locating a rental, or securing a property, in the Hunter Valley? Well, you’re not alone, according

to Shadow Minister for Housing and Homelessness Jason Clare. The federal member, who touched base with Paterson MP Meryl Swanson at Gillieston Heights on Friday, was shocked by the skyrocketing costs in the region over the past 12 months. House prices in the Hunter have jumped by 29% – much more than the national average of 21.9%. Worryingly, it’s a similar story surrounding rent, too. While weekly payments in Sydney have increased by 5.5%, they’ve risen by three or four times that amount throughout suburbs such as Mannering Park, Swansea, Gwandalan, New Lambton and many more. “All of that means if you own a home here at the moment, that’s fantastic,” Mr Clare said.
newcastleweekly.com.au
“The value of your property’s gone up. But, if you’re a young person or if you’ve got kids who are looking to buy a home, it’s just getting harder and harder to be able to buy a place where you grew up in the Hunter. “If you’re renting, it means that more and more of your money goes to paying the rent rather than saving for a deposit or giving money to the kids for school excursions or just putting food on the table.” According to the Domain Rental Report (September 2021), Swansea boasts the biggest annual increase, at 22.4%, with the median cost $478. Not far behind is Mannering Park (18.4% – $450), Gwandalan (17.5% – $470), New Lambton (17% – $550), Gateshead (16.9% –
$450), Newcastle (15.6% – $520), Broadmeadow (12.8% – $530), Nelson Bay (11.4% – $490), East Maitland (10% – $440), Medowie (9.5% – $520) and Kurri Kurri (8.5% – $385). “I heard a story the other day, not far from here, where two police officers moved to the Central Coast,” Mr Clare said. “They were looking for a place to rent for $800 a week – and they couldn’t find one. “It’s sad, if you’ve got two police officers who can’t find an affordable place to rent, what hope do people on lower and very modest incomes have, whether it’s in Sydney, the Central Coast or the Hunter?” For the full version of this story, go to newcastleweekly.com.au - Rod Thompson
Lake Mac Family Life founders Sonia Cazzulino-Blake and Rebecca Searles are enjoying the ride of success. Photo: Peter Stoop
Lake Mac Family Life celebrates a milestone They are neighbours, mothers, business partners and they both believe they live in the best place in the world. In fact, on 1 November, the pair celebrated two years of bragging about their address to anyone who will listen. And, aside from their boasting becoming a full-time job, it has also developed into a very successful, profitable business. Their names are Rebecca Searles and Sonia CazzulinoBlake and their creation is Lake Mac Family Life, a website and social media group celebrating all things Lake Macquarie. Since its inception in 2019, the online resource has become a go-to for its audience, offering information about events, jobs, trades, and family-friendly activities in Lake Macquarie. The pair currently has 13,000 followers and a Facebook group that boasts 8,500 members. “It’s grown and grown beyond our expectations,” Rebecca says. “It’s very humbling. “The community has really enveloped it.” Rebecca and Sonia met on a primary school fundraising committee eight years ago. “I remember seeing Sonia take such control over the jobs she did,” Rebecca says. “She was so efficient, so
organised, and I remember thinking how much she was just like me.” The duo say they complement each other, a mutual respect at the core of their relationship. “We love working together and we love what we do,” Rebecca told Newcastle Weekly. For Sonia, who still holds the threads of an English accent, an international move to Sydney 20 years ago left her feeling incomplete, until she stumbled upon Warners Bay. “It was the best thing my husband and I did moving here,” she says. “It’s such a wonderful place.” Lake Mac Family Life began when Rebecca sought to use her marketing background to kickstart her husband’s small business. “What I found, within 48 hours of looking, was that there was a hole in the market, in connecting local small businesses with the community in an affordable way,” Rebecca said. “There was a lot out there for Newcastle and the Hunter Valley but in Lake Macquarie there was this void. “Our whole concept, what drives our business, is connecting locals and putting local business first. “The key is we love what we do, and we love where we live.” - Rebecca Riddle

news Housing DA submitted for iconic Dairy Farmers Corner Residential apartment developer Third.i has submitted a DA to City of Newcastle to transform the iconic Dairy Farmers Corner site while paying tribute to its history.
The proposed Dairy Farmers Towers project will boast 184 apartments spaced in two towers – one 30 storeys (99m) and the other 27 storeys (90m).
The proposed Dairy Farmers Towers project will boast 184 units spaced in two towers – one 30 storeys (99m) and the other 27 storeys (90m). A separate five-storey building will house 1,500 sq m of commercial and retail space. The 30-storey tower will be Newcastle’s equal tallest residential building. Third.i director Luke Berry said the apartments would range from one to four bedrooms to increase the diversity of housing options for local people. “The project will offer residents a spectacular view across the city and beaches,” he explained. “To create a true sense of community for locals, we’ve focussed on incorporating communal and green spaces and facilities such as a gym, a cabana pool area with
lap pool, wine bar and cellar, and function rooms. “In what we believe is a first for the city, we want to use some of the commercial space as a residents’ shared work hub, so they can work from home without being in their apartment.” The site, on the corner of Tudor and Hunter streets in Newcastle West, was once home to Dairy Farmers – one of Australia’s largest dairy producers. In a nod to the history of the site, Third.i will re-imagine the heritage-listed, iconic glass milk bottle and clock towers as part of a pedestrianised, broader public art installation. “Locals affectionately know the site as Dairy Farmers Corner,” Mr Berry said. “And, that history will live on.”
Dairy Farmers Towers is the fourth West End apartment project for the Sydney-based developer. It has already completed the West, Eaton on Union, and Stella on Hannell apartments in Wickham, creating 381 inner city homes for people. Third.i’s retirement living division, ThirdAge, is also partnering with Merewether Golf Club on the recently-approved luxury resort retirement living project, The Merewether. Mr Berry said Newcastle was an exciting market to work in with great potential. “We want Dairy Farmers Towers to be a West End icon,” he said. The project has been designed by leading local architectural firm CKDS. - Rod Thompson

Newcastle Airport take off is looking Bonza Newcastle has been confirmed as a possible inclusion on the Bonza Airline route map. Newcastle Airport CEO Peter Cock recently said it was in ongoing talks with the budget airline, which will start flying in 2022. “This week we’re announcing our delivery of the sixth new route out of Newcastle Airport in 2021, demonstrating our commitment to delivering the airport our region deserves,” Dr Cock said. “There’s strong demand in the domestic travel market and Newcastle Airport is actively focused on route attraction and marketing to take advantage of
this environment. “We are in conversation with Bonza, although it is still very early days. I’ll look forward to providing our community with an update as soon as we know more.” Bonza is a new low-cost airline based in Australia and backed by a US investment firm. The airline is headed up by ex-Virgin Blue executive Tim Jordan, who hopes to capitalise on previously overlooked regional routes. The news comes in the same week Qantas announced it will offer direct flights from Newcastle to Adelaide commencing in March 2022. - Rebecca Riddle

Council helps drive much-needed blood and plasma donations Australian Red Cross Lifeblood manager Brian Bruce admits a lift in blood and plasma donations is urgently needed in Newcastle. With the recent COVID-19 enforced lockdown causing a massive shortfall, Novocastrians are now encouraged to come forward and roll up their sleeves as restrictions ease across the region. And, City of Newcastle was one of the first organisations to answer the call. “Newcastle is in particular need of O-negative [blood and plasma] donations with supply at a 10-year low due to the pandemic,” Mr Bruce said. “Collectively, lifeblood teams in Newcastle have helped save 17,800 lives so far in 2021. “More than a third of our blood supply locally comes from groups donating together from business, sporting and community organisations.” City of Newcastle CEO Jeremy Bath said staff and councillors jumped at the chance to lend an arm, and volunteer their time, to increase donations. “At least 2,300 are needed each month just in Newcastle to meet the current demand to assist cancer patients and to get people through other serious health challenges in their lives,” he stated. “City of Newcastle considers the situation to be so serious that we are encouraging our staff, several times each year, to travel to the Australian Red Cross at Broadmeadow during work time to donate blood. “This year, our lifeblood team has made 137 donations, meaning 411 lives have been saved. “But, unfortunately, this number is lower than previous years due to
COVID-19 restrictions.” City of Newcastle senior project officer Tania Antony, who coordinates council’s lifeblood team, said her personal journey drove her to encourage others to donate blood. “For me, my brother suffered from aplastic anaemia,” she told the Newcastle Weekly. “On two occasions in his life, he needed three platelet transfusions and one whole blood transfusion each week, just to survive until transplant time. “He literally came alive after each transfusion. “I am so appreciative of those strangers who gave their blood to save my brother’s life. “Before that, I was just a casual donor. “Now I do whatever I can to drive donations. I encourage more organisations and businesses to band their employees together to form a lifeblood team.” - Rod Thompson

Weaving the Red Thread hopes to remove the stigma It’s time to talk about menstruation. That’s the message from Sahara Contempree and Amanda Trieger. The Hunter-based naturopaths are the founders of Weaving the Red Thread, an organisation dedicated to proper period education. The duo is hoping to bring the taboo subject out of the shadows by delivering programs and workshops for mothers and their seven-tonine-year-old and 10-to-15-year-old daughters. “Amanda and I brought together our passion for menstrual education and are supporting girls, mothers, women, menstruators and men to understand how the menstrual cycle works and how to nourish cyclical living,” Sahara explained. To help raise awareness of the topic and bring an end to period poverty, Weaving the Red Thread
is hosting a screening of Pandora’s Box to raise money for Share the Dignity and, more importantly, start a conversation. The documentary takes the viewer on a global journey through India, Uganda, the UK, and North America to explore the cultural and social subjugation of people who menstruate. It asks the world to lift the lid on periods and consider how eliminating stigma can help create gender equality. “We hope the online event on [18 November], encourages people to support positive conversation and choices,” Amanda said. “It is such a long-term discussion and something that should have started some time ago. “So much has been done, like the tampon tax being abolished, but
more needs to happen. “One in 10 girls have no idea what is happening to them when they start their period and 60% aren’t taught how to manage it. “These statistics reveal the need for a deeper conversation, education and support within the community and school system.” Sahara added the event would have a profound effect on those going without. “I want people to understand the impact of buying a ticket,” she said. “It will supply a girl, woman or menstruator with period products she otherwise would not have had access to. “It’s really upsetting knowing that many people cannot meet their biological need to collect their blood but it’s empowering to know there is something we can do to help via
attending this event or [donating to] Share the Dignity’s Christmas Appeal.” Go to Weaving the Red Thread on Facebook for more information. For the full version of this story, go to newcastleweeky.com.au - Elizabeth Symington

Tying the laces on her running shoes six mornings a week, the All Saints College St Peter’s Year 9 student hits the new track at Smyth Street with enthusiasm and determination consistently. Her favourite event is the 1500m, a distance she covers multiple times during training. “I just love competing and I’m dedicated to my training. “It’s not like a chore to me – I love it,” she says. next few years. “My short-term goal is to make it to nationals,” she said. “After that it’s college in America, and then the Olympics.” Training at an award-winning track is sure to help. In October 2020, Hattie was one of 300 local athletics club members to welcome the new Maitland Regional Athletics Centre. The $10.5 million project, jointly funded by the Restart NSW Hunter Infrastructure and Investment Fund and Maitland City Council, is located on the site of Maitland’s former No. 2 Sportsground and Smyth Field. Boasting a 400m synthetic track and associated field facilities, an amenities building, spectator seating and sufficient car parking to service both the redeveloped No. 2 and current No. 1 sportsgrounds, the
upgraded athletics centre is a coup for future talents like Hattie. “Now we’ve got a really great track where we can train and compete against competitors from all over the country,” she said. “This is great for Maitland. “We’ve never even had zones (zone and regional championships) here before and now we’re hearing of all these events that’ll be coming to Maitland. It’s so good.” The Maitland Regional Athletics Centre will host the Hunter Region Summer Series on 28 November. It is also set to welcome the 2022 NSW Country Championships from 21 to 23 January. Pensioner Special!
Meet the Newcastle Falcons’ new NBL 1 coaches Newcastle has included both a men’s and a women’s team in the NBL 1 East competition for 2022. The freshly renamed Falcons will play in the competition replacing the Basketball NSW Waratah League. Set to start in April, it will allow NSW to fall into line with other Australian states that have already joined forces with the privately owned NBL, playing in the secondtier NBL1 competition. Newcastle Basketball welcomed new coaches Peter Astley and Chloe Mullaney this month. The Newcastle Weekly sat down with them to ask a few questions. Describe your coaching style: Peter: “Offensive sells tickets and defence wins championship. Team Focused, Mentor, Inclusive, Passionate.” Chloe: “Easy going, easy to talk to
but firm when needed to be.” What is the best thing about coaching basketball? Peter: “My passion for the sport developed from a young age watching and being around my uncle, Paul Beale, who both played the game and was an official (referee) at the NBL and international level. “I’ve been fortunate to have spent time with some exceptional individuals, coaches, players and officials, and the lifelong friends that I‘ve made through the sport is priceless. “Creating an environment where teams and individuals can strive towards achieving their goals and continually improve on their game - being a part of that is extremely rewarding. Chloe: “I love seeing players strive to hit their potential, it’s so
rewarding being involved in each player’s journey whether it’s at junior or senior level.” What are you hoping to achieve by the end of the season? Peter: “Success is measured in very different ways, everyone wants to win but it will be the character and commitment we play the game with, and how we represent the Newcastle community that is extremely important to me.” Chloe: “I’m hoping to have a successful season whether it’s in the form of winning or most importantly player development.” Why did you put your hand up for this role? Peter: “Great challenge and opportunity to be a part of the NBL1 competition and work with the club and athletes as the sport continues to grow in the region.”
Chloe: “Newcastle Basketball continues to produce extremely talented female basketballers and to be able to offer them great pathways is something I’m honored to be involved with. “This was a decision I didn’t need to think about.” Go to newcastleweekly.com.au for the full Q&A. - Rebecca Riddle

The origin story of Father Christmas is re-imagined in Gil Kenan’s live action A Boy Called Christmas. An ordinary young boy called Nikolas sets out on an extraordinary adventure into the snowy north in search of his father who is on a quest to discover the fabled village of the elves, Elfhelm. Taking with him a headstrong reindeer called Blitzen and a loyal pet mouse, Nikolas soon meets his destiny in this magical, comic and endearing story that proves nothing is impossible… A Boy Call Christmas is in cinemas on 25 November. Newcastle Weekly has five family passes to give away.

Worldly Okonomiyaki Okonomiyaki is a delicious Japanese savoury pancake-meets-omelette that delights locals and tourists alike. In its motherland, it typically consists of cabbage, meat, and seafood, but its simple construction means your palate can travel the world with Okonomiyaki, just by switching the ingredients. This recipe, from Miguel Maestre, will give you a Latin-Japanese fusion. Feast by Miguel Maestre, Published by Plum, RRP $39.99, Photography by Jeremy Simons.
Okonomiyaki with Chimichurri Serves 2
Japanese mayonnaise (kewpie), to serve
80g plain flour
Chimichurri
2 eggs
2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
200g (2 cups) shredded cabbage
1 long red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped
3 spring onions, green parts only, finely sliced
Open for Breakfast and Lunch 7 Days Monday to Wednesday & Friday 8am to 5.30pm. Thursday 8am to 8pm. Saturday 8am to 5pm and Sunday 9am to 4pm. Now Licensed
Juice of 1/2 lemon
1 chorizo sausage, finely sliced on the diagonal
Small handful of flat-leaf parsley leaves
2 Tbsp crumbled Greek feta (optional)
Small handful of coriander leaves
Your choice of coriander leaves, shichimi togarashi, furikake, and
Salt flakes and freshly ground black pepper
80ml (1/2 cup) extra-virgin olive oil
To make the chimichurri, place all the ingredients in a blender and blitz to your preferred consistency. Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary. Mix together the flour, eggs and 100ml of water in a bowl to form a smooth batter. Fold in the cabbage and spring onion. Heat a medium frying pan or barbecue hot plate over high heat. Add the batter and use a scraper to shape it into a circle about 20cm in diameter. Cook for 5 minutes, allowing the water and cabbage to steam and a crust to form on the bottom. Flip the pancake over and cook for another 5 minutes. At the same time, cook the chorizo slices in the pan or on the hot plate until crispy. Dress in 1 Tbsp of the chimichurri. Slide the pancake onto a plate and top with the crispy chorizo and feta, if using. Drizzle with 2 Tbsp of chimichurri and serve hot, topped with your choice of toppings. Swimwear for tweens, by tweens Olivia Lorenz and Myla Tucker are on a mission. However, it’s not the typical quest of a kid their age, the 12-year-olds have become entrepreneurs in a bid to make a difference. The youngsters, who are best friends, have created a swimwear label that fills a gap in the market while showing the importance of sustainable practices in the fashion industry. “Cinnamon Cove is the brand we started about two-and-a-half months ago. It’s by tweens for tweens because we realised there was a gap in the market for [our age group] and we thought we’d act on it,” said Olivia, also known as “Liv”. The idea came to mind in August when the girls found themselves with plenty of spare time. “We were down at the beach a lot during lockdown and we were looking around at the swimmers and we were like there is nothing out there for us,” Myla said. “We’re wearing the same designs as younger kids and the teens stuff is non-practical for our age group because we still like doing activities at the beach like surfing and 18

swimming and we just thought they wouldn’t work. “So, I went home one day, and I was watching a TV show on entrepreneurship with my mum and that’s when the idea came to me. “I thought: ‘I am going to make some swimsuits for tweens’. “The next day I ran around to Liv’s, and I was like, ‘look I am going to make some swimsuits for tweens, and I would really like your help because we work really well together and are best friends’ and then she agreed and that’s when it started.” What followed was a lot of hard work – being so young they struggled to find people who would back their idea. That was until they met Pride Swimwear founder Dr Steven Fleming, a local pattern maker and the Newcastle design company Something More Design. With this encouragement and support, and inspiration from their favourite colour and location in Newcastle for the name, Cinnamon Cove was born. Fast forward a couple of months and their first swimsuit, which
launched on Saturday 6 November, sold out in record time. “We can’t believe that we’ve actually gotten this far,” Myla said. “We’ve been working on it for a long time, and we’ve been working really hard,” Liv added. For the dynamic duo, the most challenging part of the process was manufacturing and finding a sustainable fabric. “We were looking at overseas but that’s really hard because they have to send you the swimmers and then you have to try them on, then you have to send them back for adjustments, so it just keeps going back and forth,” Liv explained. “We are really really fortunate to have our manufacturing here in Newcastle where we can just drive up to the shop and do it all.” Determined to steer clear of sweatshops and fast fashion, the pieces are designed and made in Newcastle – creating a brand focused on being kind to the planet. “We were looking for a long time trying to find the right fabric for us and we had to make sure it was sustainable,” Myla said. “That’s really big in Cinnamon
Cove, and manufacturing is really hard because overseas there are a lot of sweatshops and that’s really devastating. “We thought: ‘we can’t do that; we want to keep it really fair and really environmentally friendly’.” The swimsuits are made from Carvico – an Italian fabric that’s created using recycled fishing nets. “There is the sustainability aspect of our swimmers that we really love,” Liv said. “Fast fashion in sweatshops overseas, they’re not manufactured properly and the people working there, you know, they barely get paid. “Our swimsuits are made out of Carvico and, as I said, they are made here so we know they are quality.” Moving forward, the pair hopes the business makes people their age feel noticed. “We want the tween age group to feel really, really special,” Myla said. While their first swimsuit was a sell out, they will be launching another style soon. Go to cinnamoncove.com.au or follow @cinnamon_cove on Instagram to stay up to date. - Elizabeth Symington

Salad days here again for the dedicated veggie gardener Salad days are here again. Before planting the wide choices available, dig in cow manure and wait a week beforehand. If growing in containers use Martin’s Tomato and Vegetable Mix. Before planting, secure tomato stakes, together with Flourish to fertilise regularly, plus blood and bone for side dressings. The choices for summer cropping are countless – you probably won’t have enough space to grow all the delicious veggies available. Growing vegetables is a fun family thing. Kids love watching the seeds sprout and picking the sweet bite tomatoes. If necessary, give over a bit of space in the front garden to encourage their interest. Summer gardens should always be abundant in tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers and capsicum and you can mix in silver beet, eggplant and corn. My favourite is sweet bite, as this cherry-shaped
IN THE GARDEN JUDY SHARPE
fruit doesn’t seem to be attacked by fruit fly. The choices of tomatoes increase each year, and a few of these available are Grosse Lisse, Beef Steak, Roma, Mighty Red, Patio Pik and the truss varieties. Which lettuce to grow? Once, not too many years ago, the choice was only imperial – now it’s difficult to decide between green or red mignonette, cos or the wonderful multi variety of mixed lettuce in one punnet. Capsicums can be long yellow, sweet mix, easilygrown with chilli, hot, sweet and medium. But, like tomatoes, the fruit fly may attack. No summer salad is complete without cucumber. Remember, they need a little hill to grow over, whether they be Crystal Apple, Lebanese or Long Green. Leave space for sugar snap peas, celery and strawberries. Hammer in the stake or make a tripod before planting tomatoes and discourage fruit fly by
mixing up a spreadable paste of malathon and Vegemite and paint the stake – the female eats the Vegemite and the malathon causes her demise. Since Rogor was taken off the market for home gardeners, alternatives such as fly traps work very well. Enjoy your produce.
This week • Your roses may need deadheading – then apply Sudden Impact to create a new flush. • Hydrangeas are currently available – their large flower heads give a wonderful display, either in pots or the garden. Keep well-watered. • Keep passionfruit well mulched to avoid fruit drop. • Keep an eye out for powdery mildew on roses, and especially vegetables. Spray with copper oxychloride after checking instructions carefully.

You’ll enjoy indulging in romance and spending time with family or friends this weekend. the upcoming lunar eclipse signals a fresh phase in a key relationship and you may already be aware of considerable developments that are underway. A change of routine or unexpected news will alter the direction you take now.
You’re at a turning point at the moment, especially in relation to your domestic life and prospectively your work or status. You may experience this change in subtle ways, or it may hit you square on, so a tough decision may be called for. Avoid impulsiveness, especially financially, but be ready for the new.
this weekend’s romantic stars will be inspiring, but you must check you’re on the same page as someone special to avoid misunderstandings and delays. the key to success this week lies in careful planning or you may tend to act uncharacteristically rashly and make mistakes as a result.
this is a romantic weekend and you may be surprised by news or a get-together. just be careful with communications, especially if you tend to speak first and think later. better to be tactful, especially this weekend and on tuesday. You can achieve a great deal but must avoid snap decisions.

this weekend’s romantic vibe will contribute to a lovely opportunity to meet your favourite people and indulge in a little luxury. You may be inclined to overspend or overindulge though, so be careful if you are already in debt. trust your instincts, especially if you come up against an obstacle mid-week.

Past Life books: Melanie Cook, Michael De Lyall, Louise Nawrot
EXPLORING NATURE There’s something magical about being out in nature. I find a good walk always perks me up, and I often get flashes of inspiration for my writing while out exploring nature. It’s also the perfect tonic for a stressful day – nature’s medicine.
BOOKS
My favourite things
Emily S. Smith Local Children’s Author Emily is a local children’s author who grew up around the beautiful shores of Lake Macquarie. She graduated with a Bachelor of Teaching/Bachelor of Early Childhood Studies (Hon) from the University of Newcastle in 2006, and has been working as an Early Childhood Teacher ever since. Her career in early childhood education re-ignited her love of children’s literature and storytelling, which flowed into her career as a children’s author. Emily is obsessed with words like she’s obsessed with coffee (which is a lot), and is always amazed by how words can connect people, create fantastical worlds, and explain ideas. She believes words are magic and enjoys casting ‘literacy spells’ through the books and stories she writes. Emily’s writing career began with self-publishing two picture books with local author/ illustrator Graham Davidson through their early childhood literacy project ‘Storytime Lane’. She has since had two picture books published with Larrikin House, and a third is due for release in February 2021.
An author who loves books? Shocking I know. But books are something I’ve always been obsessed with. Being a children’s author, my shelves are stocked with picture books, junior fiction, middle grade, and a smattering of self-help/ self-development books. I also can’t walk past a library or bookstore without stopping in.
FAMILY It might be cliché, but my family mean the world to me. The absolute joy of my life are my nieces and nephews (I’m blessed with 3 beautiful nieces and 2 beautiful nephews). Spending time with these awesome humans adds so much meaning and love to my life (they are also wonderful cheerleaders of my author career).
MY LAPTOP I am not a tech-head, but my laptop holds all my ideas and work, as well as being my connection to people all over the world. A lot of authors have a proper desk in a proper office, but my favourite place to write is sitting on my bed with my laptop on a ‘pillow desk’. That’s where all of my work gets done.
SHARING THE JOY OF READING I have been lucky enough to share my books at local schools, libraries, the Starlight Room at John Hunter Hospital, and both the Newcastle Writers Festival and IF Maitland. I love reading books, hamming it up on stage, and making children of all ages laugh. It’s such a great part of my life as a children’s author. newcastleweekly.com.au
