After weeks, it feels like months, of listening to promises, the NSW Local Government elections will finally roll around this weekend. In the Hunter Valley, that’s nine LGAs – City of Newcastle, City of Lake Macquarie, City of Cessnock, City of Maitland, Dungog, Port Stephens, Muswellbrook, Singleton and Upper Hunter – that should be decided on Saturday 4 December. And, six of them will not only vote for their councillors, but their respective mayors, too. Up the valley, it’s been a relatively quiet time. There’s no throwing thousands of dollars at every project or accusing rivals of mis-truths. Everyone just gets in and campaigns to do the best for their community, whether it’s the Upper Hunter, Singleton or City of Cessnock. However, it’s a different story in City of Newcastle and Port Stephens. In fact, you’d swear it was a state election, the way pledges are bandied about willy-nilly. Do those councils boast a neverending money tree? I doubt it, but it hasn’t stopped a lot of candidates from splashing the cash… to gain a vote. Why not let your current deeds do the talking? A great track record runs rings around broken vows.

Hunter surf lifesavers respond to flood emergency As Singleton and Maitland faced major flooding at the weekend, volunteer surf lifesavers from throughout the Hunter stepped up to assist with rescue and relief efforts. An evacuation order was issued to hundreds of residents along the Hunter River on Saturday, as rising waters threatened power and water services. So, members from a number of surf life saving clubs in the Hunter

Branch joined forces with the NSW State Emergency Service (SES) to deal with the issues. That included duty officers, who are embedded in the Incident Control Centres to help resource and direct Surf Life Saving NSW assets including drones (UAVs) and Inflatable Rescue Boats (IRBs). Two UAV teams from the Australian UAV Service conducted aerial surveillance, providing vital

information to the SES to assist in their response to the rapidly-rising flood waters in Singleton. For the first time, the drone vision was also “live-streamed” directly back to the big screens in the SLSNSW State Ops Centre. Two IRB crews from Nobbys SLSC in Newcastle lent a hand in the Singleton area, as well, along with a crew from Stockton SLSC who was on standby in Maitland/ Raymond Terrace. The capability and agility of the UAVs has been a major asset for incident commanders, providing crucial real-time information and situational awareness. “We can deploy our UAV operators quickly and, with minimal equipment and set-up, they can be feeding back a very clear picture of

the situation in no time,” SLSNSW CEO Steve Pearce said. “For the first time in an emergency incident, we have been able to link the camera feed directly back to our State Operations Centre in Sydney, where our duty officers can see exactly what the drone pilot is seeing, which is incredible.” With the wild weather continuing to hammer NSW and flood risks imminent for rivers further north, volunteer callout teams and surf life saving assets will remain on standby over the coming week to respond if requested. “I can’t thank our volunteers enough for answering the call to assist, bringing their skills and experience to an extremely challenging situation,” Mr Pearce said. - Rod Thompson

Central Village Newcastle advertising moment

Enjoy a change in lifestyle at Central Village Newcastle For people searching for a change of pace, security and that old school community feel, Central Village Newcastle is the ideal place. Located in Mayfield, the over 55s retirement village is proving to be very popular with homes selling quickly. Sales manager Peter Hogan says residents love the location. “The village is very well-located in Mayfield, we’re only about 900 metres from the new Coles and associated shops,” he said. “We’re about 400 metres from Wests, which has a heated indoor pool, gymnasium and restaurants and cafes, and we’re very close to the Newcastle CBD and all the things that people love about Newcastle.” He adds the village is a community of people who look after one another. “Most residents really love it,” he said. “Places like Central Village give people their community back, they know most of their neighbours, they trust and have relationships with them, and they have social outings as well. “A lot of suburbs now are full of young

families which is fabulous, but the communities are no longer what they were. “At Central Village it’s more like the lifestyle you were used to decades ago. “You get to know your neighbours, make friends and be part of a supportive community.” With other events on offer, you will gain access to more than just a beautiful home. “They have regular activities in our village centre; including morning teas, craft days and special functions around holidays,” Peter said. “The function centre is also available to use for private events as well.” When it comes to the homes, the architecturally-designed buildings have everything you need. Each property includes Smeg appliances, Caesarstone bench tops, a dishwasher, reversecycle air-conditioning, bamboo floors, large windows and more. Peter believes one of the greatest parts about moving to Central Village Newcastle is downsizing and the opportunities it creates for

fi nancial gain, travel and connection. “These homes are basically maintenance free which means residents have more time to do the things they love,” he explained. “Because of the security in the village you can be comfortable knowing that your home is looked after by your neighbours. “People feel safe to go and explore the world because they have some money in their pocket and their home is secure.” With a small number of homes left to build and sell, Peter says there are about 20, anyone who is interested needs to act quickly. “I’m available to ask questions at any time,” Peter said. “Please feel free to call me for a noobligation consultation about moving to Central Village Newcastle. “We have no entry or exit fees and would love for you to come and have a look.” Go to centralvillagenewcastle.com.au or phone Peter on 0419 449 649 for more information about the retirement village.

Variety drives Christmas spirit at incredible event Superheroes, Oscar the Grouch, Buzz Lightyear, Santa and Mrs Claus helped hundreds of families celebrate Christmas early last week. Lining the McDonald Jones Stadium carpark, the colourful

characters danced and dazzled while handing out presents at Variety – the Children’s Charity’s Xmas Toy Drive-Thru. With smiles from ear-to-ear, kids and their families soaked up the joy. Two of about 1,000 lucky children were five-year-old Lilly and seven-year-old Kayden. From the back seat of their car, with their mum Sam and grandmother Noona in tow, the duo started their silly season with a bang – they are more than ready for Santa to visit when they go camping this month. Sam said Variety helped them a lot over the year. “We really enjoy going to the events and feeling the sense of community and the kids got a grant to assist them with

accessing school which helped them greatly,” she said. “We can’t thank them enough.” When it came to Wednesday’s event, Sam said the Christmas spirit was infectious. “It’s amazing, especially with COVID that it can still go ahead, and the kids can still experience all the characters and the Variety mascot,” she said. “It just brings Christmas cheer – we love it.” Variety CEO Vanessa Barry was incredibly grateful to share the event with all the attendees. “Everybody loves it,” she said. “With music, the characters and all these bash cars out here that support us, it’s just got an incredible atmosphere. “The children are so excited, coming through you can’t help but

pick up the joy of it.” Normally, Variety hosts a Christmas event in the stadium where they have a picnic with all the families. “I am delighted that we have a COVID-safe event as an alternative, but I really hope that next year we are back inside the stadium enjoying a picnic once again,” Vanessa said. “It’s been really tough, we’ve had to cancel most of our events, we’re really hoping to get back to normal in 2022. “In the meantime though the community has been really generous to us, we may have lost our events but we haven’t lost our spirits.” For the full story and more photos, go to newcastleweekly.com.au - Elizabeth Symington

Zonta members say ‘no’ to violence against women The Zonta Club of Hunter Newcastle recently joined other local groups in making an important stand. Thursday 25 November marked the start of 16 Days of Activism to End Violence Against Women. And, on Friday and Saturday, the members showcased a display at the Lake Macquarie Shopping Square to raise awareness of the

disturbing issue. The exhibit included decorated masks representing victims and anonymous quotes from women who have had to flee from violent situations. It certainly attracted plenty of attention at Mount Hutton, with numerous shoppers stopping to ask questions, seek brochures and speak

with Zonta Club of Hunter Newcastle members. Reaching its 30-year milestone, the 16 Days of Activism to End Violence Against Women global campaign is an annual call to eliminate gendered violence across the world. Some alarming Australian statistics, as cited by Our Watch, include: * Women are nearly three times more likely than men to experience violence from an intimate partner; * Young women (18–24 years) experience significantly higher rates of physical and sexual violence than women in older age groups; and * On average, one woman a week is killed by her current or former partner. Zonta Club of Hunter Newcastle advocacy chairperson Jill Maclachlan said they were proud to be involved.

“Zonta International has been dedicated, for more than 25 years, to supporting women and girls who have been subjected to physical and non-physical forms of violence,” she explained. “The efforts of club members to highlight the problem were commendable and conversations with the public touched their hearts. “Handouts with emergency numbers and club information were distributed, too. “Last year with considerable council backing, we placed stickers [containing emergency numbers] on the back of public toilet facilities in the Lake Macquarie area.” The University of Newcastle’s NUspace building and Civic Park also lit up in orange to support the cause. - Rod Thompson

Hometown hero Langford inspires next generation When you want to be the best, you have to learn from the best. And, that’s what a number of promising local youngsters just did on Saturday when America’s Cup winner – and Belmont boy – Kyle Langford took part in the Lake Macquarie leg of SailGP Championship Trophy Tour at the

Wangi Amateur Sailing Club. The defending SailGP champion popped in to visit his “hometown” with the impressive 24-carat goldplated, sterling silver trophy, ahead of the start of season two of SailGP, which begins on 17 and 18 December. “It’s so good to be back home at Lake Macquarie with my family

after a long stint living in Sweden,” Langford said. “There is nothing like Australia. “I have been spending every day sailing out on the lake with some of the guys from SailGP, including our skipper, Tom Slingsby.” Langford admitted he had fond memories of the area. “I’ve been fortunate to travel all around the world, however Lake Macquarie is still my favourite place,” he said. “I remember sailing [here] in my little Sabot boat. I’d go sailing every day after school with my brother, who was a few years older than me. He actually got into the sport first – and enticed me into it at the age of four.” Lake Macquarie was the second stop on the regional tour, which sees the season one-winning Australia team take the SailGP

Championship trophy on the road over the next month. Langford hosted a talk and training session with Wangi Amateur Sailing Club members, sharing the successes and challenges he has experienced as an athlete and his journey to becoming the wing trimmer of the Australia SailGP Team. He said it was important to inspire the next generation of sailors. “Visiting the kids at Wangi was just awesome,” Langford told the Newcastle Weekly. “It’s really important that we engage with them and show them the career pathways that are available, like SailGP. I also wanted to repay the support that I’ve had from the people of Wangi and Lake Macquarie by bringing the trophy home to celebrate with the community.” - Rod Thompson

Thousands farewell beloved Bishop Bill School students lined the streets to pay their respects to Bishop Bill.

The Funeral Mass for the Most Reverend William “Bill” Wright, Bishop of Maitland-Newcastle, took place at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Hamilton, last Wednesday. Photos: Peter Stoop

Thousands of mourners paid their respects last week to the Most Reverend William “Bill” Wright, Bishop of Maitland-Newcastle, at a Funeral Mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Hamilton. While COVID-19 regulations meant capacity was limited and attendance in the church restricted, it didn’t stop those grieving from lining the streets. Two-hundred people filled the cathedral and, as per Bishop Bill’s request, it included a contingent of students and parishioners from across the Diocese. In addition, many more worldwide said their goodbyes as they watched the Funeral Mass through an online streaming platform. Bishop Bill, who passed away in Maitland Hospital on Saturday 13 November, having succumbed to lung cancer at the age of 69, left behind a wonderful legacy. Over the past decade, he chalked up more milestones than most bishops do in their entire careers. Under his leadership, the Catholic Diocese of MaitlandNewcastle witnessed growth in the provision of grassroots community programs through CatholicCare Social Services Hunter-Manning. Wednesday’s Funeral Mass was presided over by Archbishop Anthony Fisher, joined by conjoint celebrants Archbishop Peter A. Comensoli, Bishop Brian Mascord and Bishop Michael McKenna. Father Andrew Doohan and the Bishop’s deacon, Vince Ryan, undertook Master of Ceremonies duties. Bishop Bill was a man of the people who took great honour in serving alongside his community, paying due recognition to the past and involving youth in the life of the church. Fittingly, his Funeral Mass

started with a Welcome to Country led by Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School student Lawson Griffin. Music and scripture selected for the ceremony were the same as what Bishop Bill chose for his ordination, which also took place at Sacred Heart Cathedral, 10 years prior in June 2011. On entry to the Funeral Mass, the pallbearers were members of Bishop Bill’s family. The entrance hymn was Lead, Kindly Light by John Henry Newman. Archbishop Anthony then welcomed those gathered in the church, which was followed by a message from His Holiness Pope Francis. During his introductory remarks, Archbishop Anthony also reflected on Bishop Bill’s grounded nature. “Bill is remembered as a warm, considered and deeply faithful man with a wry wit,” he said. “He had a great capacity for sitting patiently with people, especially down-and-outs. “He was a Good Shepard.” Bishop Bill’s sister, Pat Purcell, and nephew Matthew Purcell then offered words of remembrance and paid homage to his earlier years, including recounts of how he had met two popes before he had even reached his 12th birthday. Bishop Brian Mascord, who served alongside Bishop Bill in the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle as his Vicar General between 2013 and 2017, gave the homily. He began in jest, recounting his fondness for simplicity. “Today as we come together to pray for Bill, I believe he would have much preferred that this celebration took place during the more serious lockdown conditions, as it would have been less complicated,” he explained. - Rod Thompson

healthy life is – and you might be in for a shock. The born and bred local celebrated his 100th birthday at The Shed, at the Adamstown Bowling Club, on Saturday 6 November. Surrounded by family and friends, the colourful character revelled in the occasion, stating it was a “dream come true” to reach the milestone. Born in Adamstown, Mr Maher has lived all his life in Newcastle apart from the time he spent as an Army volunteer gunner in the Australian Imperial Forces in WWII, stationed at Darwin. He remembers the former steel city from its primitive days during the Great Depression, with no

main sewerage system and shanty towns at Nobbys, Lambton and Carrington. The centenarian often had no shoes to wear but that didn’t stop him having fun growing up and his great joy at being given a second-hand bicycle. Also, he developed his lifelong love of horse racing, which he still enjoys today. Mr Maher even took time out during his party to win a few small bets on the races with grandson, James. He was bestowed with a congratulatory letter from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, too, along with many words of blessings from Australian politicians.

Another highlight on the day was a unique presentation from Rebecca Skinner. The journalist, author and good family friend gave him a copy of her book, Ken Maher A Good Bet: I Did It My Way. “I was delighted to hand it over to him in person,” she said. “It’s a special present from his only child, Joan. “Ken was thrilled with it as it is something positive he can leave to his family and the generations to come.” And, finally, his secret to a long and healthy life? “Eat five vegetables a day, have a hobby and plenty of sex with your partner,” Mr Maher said. - Rod Thompson

Popular TV show still changing people’s lives The Block 2021 may be over, but it’s not done changing lives. Hunter-based entrants Kirsty Lee Akers and Jesse Anderson have been launched into the spotlight after placing fourth in the series. However, they’re not the only locals who have gained something from the popular reality TV show. Newcastle-based indigenous artist Lizzy Stageman says her life has been completely transformed since she created two artworks for contestants Ronnie and Georgia. The 55-year-old emailed the show on a whim – she was hoping to sell some of her prints through The Block Shop. It was the surprise of her life when she got a reply saying Ronnie and Georgia were interested in her style of art. “I was very overwhelmed and

excited,” she said. “I just couldn’t believe it, I was a bit of a dizz at the time but I am really proud of myself for putting myself out there and getting a response. “A week later I [spoke] to Georgia and discussed the brief, size, and her colour palette. Not knowing how much time I had, I started to create the artwork immediately.” Lizzy put together two detailed paintings in five short days, she even had to blow-dry the works between coats to get it all done. The proud Wiradjuri Ngiyampaa and Barkindji woman has always loved art, but didn’t fully commit herself to it until early 2020. After three-years of “really bad” health for herself and her husband, she decided it was time to focus on what she loves. In 2018 Lizzy battled breast cancer

but before that she also endured a stroke and a surgery for a hole in her heart. While her husband, Duncan suffered a heart attack in 2017, a collapsed lung the year after and fought bowel cancer in 2019. Wearing her scars proudly, Lizzy hopes her story can inspire others. “At 55 my dream of being able to do my art, a dream I had at 17, has

come true,” she said. “Don’t give up on reaching for the stars because if you just keep reaching far enough you will be able to touch them one day. “It doesn’t matter how old you are, even through the health battles, you just have to keep going.” Go to newcastleweekly.com.au for the full story. - Elizabeth Symington

Jason feels the love again after COVID setback

cover story Jason Paris believes his Elton John tribute show is the best on the planet. Photo: Peter Stoop

newcastleweekly.com.au

After a tough couple of years Jason Paris is still standing. He’s determined to not let the sun go down on him as he dreams of a future where he takes his talent to an international audience. Since 2013, the 52-year-old has been creating an Elton John tribute show. Called Elton Out Of The Closet®, the idea came to be when Jason was tending to his empty house. “My fiancé of 15 years, she and I had just broken up which was actually a very positive thing for both of us,” he said. “But, the real negative in all of that was that we had a nine-year-old daughter and she and I were just best friends. “So, with her mother and her gone, the house was very empty and very barren and it was within something like 24 hours after the bust-up I was kind of moping around the house, I may have just been pushing a vacuum around, but I was singing an Elton John song to myself. “It was Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me and in that moment, I was like: ‘you know it’s never occurred to me that with a little bit of effort I can do a reasonable interpretation of Elton John’s singing voice’. It was like a dam broke, the idea for the show came flooding in.” What followed was lots of planning, practicing and purchasing – he needed to faithfully recreate costumes, instruments and more while refining his performance. “It became a very serious undertaking, and it was the seriousness of it, the absolute meticulous attention to detail with the overarching goal to get this show to be a prosperous business that drove it to meeting Mike Hennessey,” Jason said. Mike is Jason’s manager, owner of ProShows Music Group, who has

been working with tribute groups throughout the country and knows talent when he sees it. “We manage what I would class as the highest quality tribute shows in Australia,” he said. “We usually have about six shows on the go and out of those, I tend to have one-to-three of them as my marquee shows, so the Elton John show is what I class as one of those. “For two hours you are taken on this journey where you know it’s not Elton John, but you feel like you are there with him.” The pandemic has been a challenge for the duo. So, to help make up for the losses, Jason has launched a crowdfunding campaign. “The lockdown really put paid to our plans and Mike and I are sort of clawing our way back to prosperity now,” he said. “About six weeks ago I launched a campaign on GoFundMe with the hope of bringing in some funding so that we can start planning and executing the national and then international theatre tours we’ve been talking about.” Moving forward, Jason is confident he will fulfil his dreams. “It’s corny to say but this is the finest Elton John tribute on the planet,” he said. “I know anybody would accuse me of lacking objectivity when I say that, but Mike is very fastidious about checking out the competition. “Through that process we’ve made it even stronger. “So, I think with as much objectivity as I could muster in a few words, I would say Elton Out Of The Closet® is the finest representation of 1970s Elton John in his prime.” Go to gofundme.com/f/elton-out-ofthe-closet-theatre-tour to donate or visit newcastleweekly.com.au for the full story. - Elizabeth Symington

Tegan Martin is fashioning a return to harness racing One of Newcastle’s favourite daughters is inviting her fellow Novocastrians to “come along and have a great night out” at the Newcastle Harness Racing Club this weekend. That’s when the local organisation

2014 Miss Universe Australia winner Tegan Martin and local hope The Black Prince ahead of the 2021 Inter Dominion Series at the Newcastle International Paceway. Photo: Peter Stoop

will host the third round heat of the prestigious 2021 Inter Dominion Series at its International Paceway on Sunday 5 December. And, event ambassador Tegan Martin can’t wait for the big evening to arrive. “I feel like part of the family these days,” the 2014 Miss Universe Australia winner said. “I’ve been participating in events here for a few years now. “I’m very blessed to work across Australia at a number of racing functions, whether it’s thoroughbred or harness. “However, nothing thrills me more then coming back to Newcastle – and supporting my home town. “It really makes me happy.” Hot off the heels of her Miss Universe win, Tegan went on to

prove she was more than just a pretty face as a contestant on Celebrity Apprentice in 2015 and 2017’s I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here. The vivacious 29-year-old has also worked as a media insider for the Victorian Racing Club (VRC) and red carpet host for the AACTAs and ARIAs – to bring their events to life. She’ll be busy on 5 December, too. “I’m really encouraging everyone to don their finest outfits on the night,” Tegan said. “I’ll be popping around looking for the best dressed male and female, and boy and girl. “So, get out of your trackies or pyjamas, which we’ve been in for far too long now. “The Newcastle Harness Racing Club puts on such a great event

every year. “Except for 2020, which was nonexistent for life in general. “But, what’s better than the Inter Dominion Series to attract a massive crowd back to the Newy track?” It’s not just about cheering on and witnessing some of the finest domestic and international runners in action either, according to Tegan. “There’ll be something for everyone,” she told the Newcastle Weekly. “The entertainment is fantastic. “The club will host local bands on the evening; there’ll be jumping castles and face painting for the kids as well. “In fact, we’re planning a number of activities for the children and their families.” - Rod Thompson

in the garden

Keep potted plants in mind when preparing to travel My first column of December will be decidedly different than most – normally, I am handing out hints for watering, not this year. For example, gardenias, they generally have many yellow leaves, which can often be attributed to lack of water while they are budding and blooming. In every garden, they present a magnificent display of perfumed blooms. The only drawback, however, the rain and strong winds are causing blooms to drop sooner than normal. But, by this time of year, I suggest applications of cow manure and iron – and lots of watering. Lawn pests seem to be drowning. There are not many gardeners complaining about crickets and black beetles – the army grub generally hatch-out later in summer when it is hot and dry. Colourful beds for Christmas should have been well and truly planted by now. Don’t despair, there is still time to plant out punnets of advanced red and white petunias to fill beds and pots.

Apply Flourish for Flowers and Foliage when you plant and then continue each week until Christmas. If we do finally get a hot summer, I don’t think it will be dry. According to our local weather guru Gavin Morris, the rain will persist. However, as we know, the weather can be changeable so during December don’t mow too low and without rain, water deeply every three or four days. Holiday instructions won’t be as rigid this year either, if the weather predictions are accurate. Normally I suggest help from neighbours, family and friends to water gardens and pot plants. But, if travelling away, some precautions should be put in place, particularly for potted plants. I never mind watering my neighbours’ as she has them grouped on one verandah and out of the afternoon sun. Hanging baskets shouldn’t be left high and dry swinging in the wind. Add them to the grouped pots, leaving a hose

IN THE GARDEN JUDY SHARPE

close by, remembering pots, for example, will be the first to dry out, even when garden beds hang in. Flowers and veggies will need extra fertilising as most of the nutrients would have been leached out by the heavy rains. Apply dolomite to garden beds and add a handful of cow manure or blood and bone.

This week • Prune side shoots off tomatoes – keep an eye out for fruit fly. • Plant dahlia tubers and gladiolus corms. Note dahlias are available growing in punnets. • Watch for black spot on mangoes and leaves – anthracnose will need to be treat regularly with a fungicide.

Catherine Hill Bay 3 Sunnyspot Boulevarde Seven bedrooms, three bathrooms and an attached self-contained studio located within walking distance of what has twice been named one of ‘Australia’s 101 Best Beaches’. That’s what awaits the buyer of 3 Sunnyspot Boulevarde in Catherine Hill Bay. Boasting multiple living spaces, an outdoor spa pool, and a sizable backyard, the stylish two-storey property is set to fetch $1.5 million. Ray White East Lake Macquarie director Ty Zink says the property is expected to attract buyers looking for extra space, be it a large family or someone looking for a coastal holiday home. “It’s in a premium location

surrounded by beautiful sandy beaches and is the true definition of a family home,” Mr Zink said. “Space and functionality are in abundance.” The home’s interior styling also has a broad appeal, he says, with sleek and easy-care tiles that flow throughout the first floor and lots of natural light. “Any avid chef will delight in the well-equipped kitchen with gas cooking, a walk-in pantry, stainless steel appliances, beautiful white cabinetry and a centre island,” he said. “Multiple living spaces are on offer, including a lounge room, a kid’s area and a formal living space.

“The study can be easily converted into a bedroom or kept asis while an attached self-contained studio with a kitchenette, living area and ensuite is also downstairs.” A large double garage, Mr Zink adds, ensures extra storage and side access - “perfect for storage of a boat or caravan”. Catherine Hill Bay takes its name from the ship which ran aground there in 1867. The former coal-

mining township, with a population of around 200, sits just south of Swansea in Lake Macquarie.

NEW COLOSSEUM My first LEGO model of the Colosseum taught me so much about building - LEGO does not make ovals easily. Even after a tragic shipping accident, I still had a lot to learn building it a second time.

HONDA CIVIC TYPE R

Although not the first life-sized LEGO car we’ve made, this is one of models I’m most proud of. The shape, the style of the car, all the little details, the working lights and built in wheels so it can roll… It all just came out so well.

My favourite things

Ryan McNaught LEGO-Certified Professional A judge on LEGO Masters Australia and a LEGO-Certified Professional (one of only 14 in the world), Ryan has been creating LEGO models professionally for stores, exhibitions, and events all over the world since 2008. With twin sons, Ryan had no choice but to love LEGO again, even more so when his mum kept all his LEGO from when he was a child and gave it back to him. Ryan has created everything from life-sized cars, a 10-metre high Christmas tree and has even made LEGO for Danish royalty! When not building LEGO, Ryan loves marathon running and is working on his goal to run one on every continent.

Being a part of LEGO Masters is amazing and working with Hamish has not only taught me a heap about the strange new world of making TV, but he’s made the whole process so much fun!

SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE Besides building the Colosseum, the other LEGO model that I’ve learnt the most from is probably the Sydney Opera House. Believe it or not, my team and I have built LEGO versions of the Sydney Opera House 19 times. newcastleweekly.com.au
