I wasn’t the only person “blown away” by the new $470 million Maitland Hospital during a special tour last week. In fact, on more than one occasion, it was compared to a holiday resort, just minus the pool. Even Hunter New England Local Health District chief executive Michael DiRienzo, Health Infrastructure executive director Amanda Bock, Paterson federal MP Meryl Swanson and Maitland state MP Jenny Aitchison, as well as the few specially-invited community members, were impressed by the state-of-the-art facility. But, it was hard not to be awe-struck. The Metford-based hospital has been designed to meet the growing health service needs for the region now and into the future. Boasting 339 beds, it also includes space for a 12-chair chemotherapy service, an MRI and an additional CT scanner, as well as a purpose-built Early Treatment Zone in the Emergency Department. There are expanded facilities for surgery, maternity and paediatric care, too, along with renal dialysis, oral health services and outpatient clinics.

A rooftop helipad, complete with panoramic views, completes the picture. So, it was certainly breath-taking. And, rumour has it Cessnock could soon boast a similar development, which is more terrific news for the Hunter.

It’s not good enough, say John Hunter ED nurses “We are burnt out, we are tired [and] we are currently stretched beyond our limits and believe our emergency department (ED) is working in a state of crisis.” That’s the message from John Hunter Hospital ED nurse Keely Parkes. As steward of the NSW
Nurses and Midwives’ Association’s (NSWNMA) John Hunter and John Hunter Children’s Hospital Branch, she joined in on a call to action last Thursday (9 December). “We are concerned for our patients in the emergency department in regards to safety and staffing

There are the moments in life’s journey when you need to turn to someone you can trust. Like the moment you decide to explore options for retirement living. The moment you need residential aged care for yourself or a loved one. Or the moment you need a little care and support to continue living independently in your own home. With over 65 years experience in providing compassionate, quality aged care, Anglican Care has earned that trust. So, take a moment to talk to one of our friendly support team about your aged care needs now, and in the future. Because wherever you are on life’s journey, you can trust in Anglican Care.

issues,” Keely explained. “We want them to listen to our concerns and provide us with safe patient ratios so that we can provide the promised excellence to every patient, every time. “Often, we’ll have incredibly busy days with patients waiting an extreme amount of time, sometimes up to eight hours to be seen by a doctor and up to two or three hours to be seen by our clinical initiatives nurse which is the second point of care. “That often has resulted in situations of seizures in the waiting room, patients having strokes sitting in our waiting room and even cardiac arrests. It’s just horrendous, we are all here for patients. “That’s why we got into this job, so to not be able to provide the beds and the care for those patients due to staffing is just horrendous for us.
“That’s why we are here to stand up today to say to the government that it’s not good enough.” NSWNMA assistant general secretary Shaye Candish added an open letter signed by 500 ED clinicians and supporting services was submitted to HNELHD CEO Michael DiRienzo in July, yet many issues continued to plague the ED. “Our members outlined the need for safer working conditions and identified eight reasonable staffing requirements to significantly improve patient outcomes in the ED,” she said. “Rather than seriously consider these improvements the concerns have been rebuffed yet again, leaving an already fatigued nursing workforce to feel unsupported and rejected.” Go to newcastleweekly.com.au for the full story. - Elizabeth Symington

Munibung Hill Management Plan on public exhibition The public exhibition of a draft management plan for Munibung Hill is a fantastic next step in what is expected to be a significant improvement for community access to the much-loved bushland area, according to Stuart Carter. Lake Macquarie City Council

recently identified the location as an iconic place in the LGA – and is now seeking feedback from residents on its proposal until 20 December. And, that’s gained support from the Munibung Hill Conservation Society (MHCS) president. “We are living at a time when, thankfully, we view landscapes like Munibung Hill as more than just sites for mining and exploitation,” Mr Carter said. “It is home to a vast array of native plant and animal species. “Their conservation is a highpriority for the MHCS, who prepared a Fivefold Vision statement setting out the geological, ecological and cultural heritage values along with recreational, educational and visitor economy principles that could be realised with the appropriate installation of facilities
within the Munibung Hill precinct. “The geological and indigenous cultural aspects need special recognition with storyboards relating to the 251 million years (of age) and 65,000 years of Aboriginal custodianship. “While we acknowledge that some people would like to keep Munibung Hill a secret for their private, personal recreational purposes, the conservation values will be better served by attracting a new generation of custodians.” For regular visitors, or even those of more recent times due to the COVID-19 situation, the stemming of erosion and the upgrading of walking tracks are considered high priorities. “The basic facilities proposed for two trailhead sites is welcome news,” Mr Carter said.
“With one suggested for the south-west and another for the north-east, these will make for a much-improved visitor experience. “Guests to Lake Macquarie will undoubtedly appreciate the track upgrades. “Providing easy access to the main north-south ridgeline will be welcomed by walkers who currently have to negotiate steep, badly eroded slopes that put a lot of people off. “With panoramic views from the vantage points, the city will get free promotional photographs of Lake Macquarie sent out on social media, too.” To have your say on the draft management and concept plans, go to shape.lakemac.com.au/ munibunghill - Rod Thompson

Australian-first Destination Porsche Centre revs up Novocastrians welcomed a touch of luxury to the city last week as Australia’s first Destination Porsche Centre opened its doors. The state-of-the-art facility was launched in Newcastle with a special event for guests across the region. Showcasing new levels of sustainability and innovation, the 1,670 square metre centre is the result
of a 14-month, $5 million build. Located on Griffiths Road in Lambton, it brings Porsche to town for the first time, offering the chance to immerse yourself in one of the world’s most iconic luxury car brands. Porsche Australia CEO Daniel Schmollinger said the opening was an “exciting time” for them.
Porsche Australia CEO Daniel Schmollinger with a few cars from the range.
“Each Porsche location is unique and exclusive,” he said. “We are deliberately selective about where we are located, who represents us in these markets and how each location is designed and presented. By having a network that is just the right size, we can ensure the quality of the Porsche ownership experience remains absolutely exceptional. “In McCarroll’s and Newcastle, we have the right partners and location.” It’s the first centre to showcase the brand’s new Destination Porsche architecture, which is being rolled out around the world. The concept for this architecture is based on changing customer needs. It revolves around a new retail plan that incorporates a showroom intended to become a gathering place for the Porsche community.
Led by McCarroll’s Automotive Group, the Porsche Centre Newcastle team is hoping it appeals to current owners as well as new customers. “The most exciting thing about Newcastle at the moment is that it’s got this incredible energy,” CEO Simon McCarroll said. “Over the past five-to-10 years it’s transformed into one of Australia’s most exciting, dynamic and vibrant cities and we felt the time was right to make an investment in the town that matched this. “We’ve been in the city since 1999 – we set Newcastle up initially because my mother and her family were all from the area – and now more than ever I think you are seeing people move to Newcastle. “It’s a pleasure to bring world class brand experiences to the area.” - Elizabeth Symington
Season’s Greetings and Happy New Year Customer Service and the Digital Library at the City Administration Centre will be closed from midday Friday 24 December and will re-open Tuesday 4 January. Wishing you a safe and Merry Christmas.

Conroy leads fight to save Lake Mac GPAAH services Shortland federal MP Pat Conroy, along with Labor’s candidate for Hunter Dan Repacholi, met angry residents and local doctors at the weekend to discuss the urgent need to save Lake Macquarie’s GP Access After Hours (GPAAH) services. As a direct result of a $560,000 funding cut from the national Coalition, from 1 January, the GPAAH clinics at both Belmont Hospital and Westlakes Community Health Centre
in Toronto will be forced to reduce their operating hours in half on weekends and public holidays. It follows on from a decision to close GPAAH at the Calvary Mater from Christmas Eve, due to the Australian Government’s cutbacks and freezes to Medicare. Other similar services will be affected at John Hunter and Maitland hospitals. Last month, Newcastle federal MP Sharon Claydon presented a petition
Shortland federal MP Pat Conroy and Labor’s candidate for Hunter Dan Repacholi met with local residents and doctors on Saturday at Toronto Diggers.
to Minister for Health Greg Hunt, with more than 11,000 signatures, to salvage GPAAH at Calvary Mater but it appears that gesture was in vain. In fact, he failed to respond to the local member personally, opting to palm-off that responsibility to his Chief of Staff Joanne Tester instead. Fronting a concerned crowd at Toronto Diggers on Saturday, Mr Conroy admitted the government’s stance could be an unfortunate sign of “things to come” in the future. “There is a review currently sitting on Mr Hunt’s desk, which if approved will see the remaining $4 million of funding for the Hunter’s GPAAH clinics slashed to just $1 million,” he said. “If that happens, that will effectively be the end of this vital service.” Mr Conroy described the cuts as “nonsensical”.
“Families and doctors have told me they are outraged, worried and, quite frankly, in disbelief,” he said. “No one can understand why the Morrison-Joyce government would cut the funding to this essential health service. “This is just the latest attack from the Liberals-Nationals who seem content to continuously threaten the health outcomes of people in our community.” Mr Repacholi said the Hunter cannot afford to lose the GPAAH service. “These clinics are as important for families as they are for our health system as a whole, as they take stress off emergency departments and reduce wait times for patients,” he stated. “I will fight tooth and nail to save our GPAAH clinics.” - Rod Thompson

New Maitland Hospital an ‘impressive’ facility “Impressive” was a common word bandied about last week during a sneak peek of the new $470 million Maitland Hospital. From Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) chief executive Michael DiRienzo to Paterson federal MP Meryl Swanson and her Maitland state counterpart Jenny Aitchison, from the media reps to the specially-invited community
members, everyone expressed a similar sentiment. The state-of-the-art 339-bed facility at Metford is certainly one piece of “marvellous construction”. More like a holiday retreat than a medical resource, it was designed to meet the growing health service needs for the Hunter Valley now and for many decades to come. “I’m very proud to be the chief

executive,” Mr DiRienzo said. “I am sure it will serve the community for an extremely long time. Our staff has been hard at work preparing for this big move, which is on track for early 2022.” Mr DiRienzo admitted patients could now expected to receive high-quality care in a modern, comfortable environment featuring a mix of one and two bedrooms. “I must say, we’ve done a great job in making, what sometimes is not such a pleasant experience for those admitted and community members, it a lovely, lovely setting – with a gorgeous outlook and exquisite accommodation. “Each room boasts an en-suite and nice large windows, which allows plenty of natural light. “People can take in the views of Maitland while they recover. “That plays a big role in someone’s wellbeing. “The hospital will provide expanded facilities for surgery, maternity and paediatric care, along with renal dialysis, oral health services and outpatient clinics, to combat the increasing demands of the community into the future. “We’ve put a lot of focus on outpatients and how to add value into our health care. “There’s also space for a new 12-chair chemotherapy service, an MRI and an additional CT scanner, as well as a purpose-built Early Treatment Zone (ETZ) in the Emergency Department (ED), which means patients can be assessed and treated more efficiently. “We have a rooftop helipad, too, with panoramic views. “That will connect patients directly to the hospital – and speed up the treatment process. “That’s a masterpiece in itself.” Mr DiRienzo said the employees deserved much of the praise as well. “All of this wouldn’t be possible without them,” he told the Newcastle Weekly.
“They’ve had a big input into the hospital design. “It ensures the end product is one that meets the needs of both our staff and our patients. “But, it would be remiss of me not to mention the old Maitland Hospital. “It’s served the community for more than 175 years. “So, it will be a milestone event when we bid it farewell. “However, I’m confident the new facility will allow our medical staff to provide the best possible care for our patients and help them recover in an environment that meets all of their needs. We’re excited about the transition. “It’s going to be a big task to move the patients. “But, I’m positive it will run very, very smoothly.” Ms Aitchison described the new hospital as an “outstanding facility”. “I’m proud of everyone in our community who has contributed to this,” she said. “We have all played a role, working hand-in-hand with the Maitland Community Unions Alliance and all the other local groups to ensure it remained in public hands. “We have fought for additional services and equipment; and we will continue to fight for these and better transport links as we continue. “But, for today, I am delighted with what I saw last week, and what our community has achieved over the past 10 years. “It will be a lasting legacy to the strength of collective action: the people’s hospital. “While it is a series of buildings, it is the many people who work within it, the patients who heal there and the community that supports it which make the difference. “Maitland residents are the best and I know our new hospital will be the best in our state.” - Rod Thompson

Imagine being a young girl who’s recently reached double-digits in age, and you are lucky enough to get one-on-one time with a professional athlete who’s making their mark in a sport you dream of representing your country in. That’s what the likes of Eden, Charlotte and Kyah are set to enjoy in January when Newcastle plays host to its second Girls Day Out (GDO) event at Empire Park. The trio is expected to be among hundreds of six-to-16year-olds who will partake in a series of 45-minute clinics both in and around the Cooks Hill space. The event, to be staged on Saturday 29 January, will feature come-and-try sessions in surfing, football, rugby league, rugby union and netball. The brainchild of Host a Surfer founder Kirsten Ansell, the sixhour extravaganza has already attracted an array of elite female athletes including Knights players Mel Howard, Jayme Fressard, Caitlan Johnston and Bobbie law, World Qualifying series WQS surfers Philippa Anderson, Alyssa Lock and Elle Clayton Brown, and retired Giants netballer Sam Poolman. “It’s really good to meet someone you look up to and be able to play some sport with them for a little bit,” Merewether Carlton Greens junior rugby player Eden Wilson said. “Last year I had a really good time.” Hunter Wildfires player Kayla Waldron says joining this year’s event was a win-win situation. “I can’t wait, I think it’s such a brilliant idea,” she said. “Some of these girls have been playing for longer than I have and I think their enthusiasm and their
passion for the sport is going to be great to see first-hand. “When I was first starting out there were only 7’s competitions you could enter here and there, it wasn’t a full-blown thing – like what the boys have. “I think it’s awesome to be running events like this and having young girls get involved. “It gives them a sense they have somewhere to go within their sport. It shows them this is not just a hobby, that girls can make this a real thing for themselves. “And who knows, we could find some future players at the event.” For 11-year-old Newcastle Olympic player Charlotte MacNeill, GDO means spending a Saturday within arm’s length of her heroes. “Normally we see them on the field but at Girls Day Out you can actually talk to them, and they help you with tips for your game,” she said. Newcastle Jets midfielder Cassidy Davis agrees. “There was never anything like this when I was younger. Kirsten and her team have done an amazing job getting this up and running,” she said. “We were involved last year and it was such a terrific turnout. “It’s a great day for the girls to try different sports they might never have thought of before, and they can then see what pathways are available to get them there. “There’s a lot of exciting things happening in women’s sport. “It’s been a long time coming but it’s getting better and it’s great to have people who support it so much.” Go to newcastleweekly.com.au for the full story. - Rebecca Riddle

Coffee by day, burgers by night, that’s how Wickham’s newest eatery is being touted. Located on Hannell Street, The Coffee Club/Burgers with Bite Newcastle concept store was officially opened to the public earlier this month. As local workers, many wearing high-vis, streamed through the doors for their caffeine fi x on the morning of Friday 3 December, after a swift sign change and a table reset, it was champagne, beer and burgers on offer for the 50 invited guests after 5pm. And, while City of Newcastle Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes cut the ribbon on The Coffee Club in the morning, Newcastle state MP Tim Crakanthorp lent a hand in welcoming the community to Burgers with Bite in the evening. All within the same modern space, the two menus, day and night, are set to be a regular feature at the family-owned and run business that will welcome visitors seven days a week from 6.30am. For new owners Martin and Fiona McLean the investment has been an exciting project. “It’s great to fi nally see people walking through those doors,” Mr McLean said. “It’s been months of preparation and decision-making and planning and it’s good to see it’s all been worth it.” McLean and his team are hoping to attract morning commuters and neighbouring workplaces until 3pm before
reopening at 4pm for evening diners. The father-of-four has enlisted the help of his family in getting the project off the ground, many who have put their hands up to cook, clean and serve within the eatery. The former professional basketballer also has the support of much of the Newcastle Basketball community. But, the Taylors Beach resident says buying into a hospitality chain comes not without its own set of challenges. “We did a lot of research, we visited other stores, we crunched our numbers and it all led us here, this is something we really believe in,” he said. “This is the fi rst of its kind for Newcastle and we’re hoping everyone gets behind it. “The support from The Coffee Club and Burgers with Bite has so far been fantastic. “We’re in a spectacular location that’s only going to get better.” Mr Crakanthorp agreed the opening was timely, as the 2293 postcode welcomes the latest of 14 planned property developments within the precinct. For those wondering why it’s called Burgers with Bite? – The Newcastle Chilli Brothers have joined forces with the kitchen to showcase three of their locallyproduced, all natural sauces. The brand’s hottest bottle Reaper Sriracha rated Extra Hot is something you will not forget – don’t say we didn’t warn you. - Rebecca Riddle

A Little Ray of Giving bringing smiles to those in need Something as small as a gift from a stranger can make a huge difference in someone’s life – it sends a message of support, especially during the festive season. That’s the backbone of Ray White East Lake Macquarie’s annual Christmas donation drive. A Little Ray of Giving calls on the community to open their hearts to people who might be going without during the most wonderful time of the year. “We encourage a sense of ‘selfless over selfish’ in our behaviours,” Ty Zink, of The Boys, said. “We love having the opportunity to pay it forward and bring communities together to help families in need.” In 2021, they are collecting gifts for Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC). The second half of The Boys, Troy
McLennan, says the charity is a place they constantly like to support. “Most of us in our lives have experienced a point of misfortune, either by a poor decision on us, or being the victim of a poor decision of someone else,” he said. “Australia is the country of second chances, the home of the underdog and the great Aussie battler... everyone can do something amazing when they know they have the support of others around them... Ronald McDonald House provides that support.” RMHC support care coordinator Morgan Eisel is incredibly grateful for their backing. “For the seriously ill or injured children and their families staying at Ronald McDonald House Newcastle this festive season, Ray White East Lake Macquarie is sure to bring big smiles to their faces,” she said.
“Eighteen families will be calling Ronald McDonald House Newcastle ‘home’ this Christmas. “Many have travelled far from home so they can be near the vital treatment their child needs.” Morgan added it is humbling to know people want to support the organisation’s work. “This brings an amazing sense of
gratitude for the dedicated community who want to help keep families together,” she told Newcastle Weekly. Gifts can be dropped off at Ray White East Lake Macquarie’s Belmont or Swansea offices. “If [you’re] not able to make it into our office, give us a call on 4972 1876 and we can collect,” Ty said. - Elizabeth Symington
Ray White East Lake Macquarie’s Ty Zink and Troy McLennan are hoping to spread some Christmas cheer.

Let’s talk gardening for a Christmas present It’s time to talk gardening for a Christmas present, even though plants can be hard to hide. However, there is one great solution. A gift voucher provides the opportunity for personal selection and they are wonderful for gardeners with a limited budget. Why not create your own gardener’s hamper - gloves, tools, seeds, fertiliser, perhaps a book,
Even though they can be hard to hide, plants make a great Christmas gift.
inside a pot, wrapped in mounds of cellophane? It looks great. Have you considered giving a colourful poinsettia for Christmas? The care of these lovely plants is fairly minimal - always water under the growth, not on the crown as a fungal disease can result from wetting the bracts (which aren’t really flowers). Poinsettias are actually part of the Euphorbia family, which also contains spiky cactus. It is also a large genus with close to 2,000 species. What I really love about poinsettias is their afterChristmas value. Planted out in the garden, they become a low shrub which will
flower during winter, which is why - in the northern hemisphere - the bright red poinsettia is so abundant, while here in Australia they are artificially cultivated for our Christmas season. There are many other flowering indoor plants, which are ideal gifts and not overly expensive such as African violets Spathyfi lum (Madonna Lilies), Anthuriumums Begonias and Orchids. Unfortunately, this year, NSW Christmas Bush is in short supply, but they do make a wonderful gift covered in bright red bracts. The most popular presents this season for younger people and littlies are the fly catchers and, of course, there are many different colourful pots from small to large.

Jewells 16 Cardine Close Just ten minutes south along the highway – or north if you’re coming from Sydney, sits the latest Property of the Week. Nestled in the increasingly-popular suburb of Jewells, 16 Cardine Close is “a standout”. “It’s got a cool, coastal vibe, it’s in a quiet cul-de-sac, it’s got Awabakal on its doorstep, as well as cycleways and beaches, it’s private and it’s a home that has been well-loved,” Altitude Real Estate agent Troy Reeves said. Boasting six bedrooms, three bathrooms and two car parks, Cardine
Close has already caused a stir in the local market. Within 24 hours of featuring in online marketing, the family-sized home has already attracted bids higher than the expected price guide.

Windale, Mount Hutton, Gateshead ‘very desirable’ A shift in public perception could see suburbs like Windale, Mount Hutton and Gateshead become the next bestkept secret, says Altitude Real Estate agent Troy Reeves. With easy access to the city’s main thoroughfares, beaches, shopping precincts, a private hospital, schools and sporting facilities, the likelihood of out-of-town buyers snapping up what locals may have been avoiding, is high. “They’re geographically amazing locations,” Mr Reeves says. “If you dropped a pin on Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, these suburbs are very desirable. “They all sit on the coastal fringes
between lake and ocean, all offer entry level pricing, and with infrastructure changes, like the Bennetts Green development, they’re pockets worth keeping an open mind about.” And, with many buyers coming from elsewhere, perceptions are likely to change sooner than expected. “On the weekend we had 70% of buyers from outside of Newcastle,” Mr Reeves said. “The various open homes attracted potential buyers from places like Gloucester, Scone and Singleton, and we had three buyer agents from Sydney. “There’s no denying the region’s
appeal is no longer a secret.” And, while house prices continue to soar in the Hunter, Mr Reeves believes the forecast is promising. “It’s not all gloom and doom,” he told Newcastle Weekly. “I think prices in our region
should start to smooth out in the coming months. “We should at least see the market stabilise to 3 to 5% growth again, rather than the 20% we’ve been experiencing lately.” - Rebecca Riddle

You’ll appreciate the chance to be more spontaneous and relaxed in your daily routine. be prepared to pace yourself. A domestic or personal matter is best approached from a philosophical point of view to ensure you are on the right path and on the same page as someone close.
You’ll enjoy get-togethers, news and developments that could boost your happiness and work status. However, this will not be without some pressure as you juggle your personal life, finances and work duties, so be sure to pace yourself and aim to let go of the stresses of the year.
You’ll enjoy developing a deeper connection with someone special and romance could blossom. Sunday’s full moon signals the start of a new schedule. A change in your circumstances may be outside your control, so be practical and manage changes carefully to avoid upheaval.
You’ll turn a corner in your pastimes and activities, enjoying a trip or more time with those you love. romance could blossom. However, if you have been arguing with someone lately, some areas of disagreement may reemerge, so ensure you maintain a balanced perspective.

You’ll enjoy a more light-hearted atmosphere this week as you gain the chance to enjoy an interest, hobby or friendship more. You may need to accommodate a fresh arrangement or schedule at home. A reunion or a return to an old haunt may bring up strong emotions, so maintain perspective.
developments early next week will represent a chance to gather your thoughts and enjoy a trip or favourite activity. A reunion could be ideal although there may be a surprise or obstacle first, so plan well ahead in advance. Aim to embrace fresh circumstances and look to the future.
Sunday’s full moon will highlight your friendships and family life, creating the chance to socialise and network. If you’re single, you may meet someone with a refreshing outlook. However, you’ll need to manage a change in your environment, activities or health routine carefully.
You’ll appreciate the chance to bring more romance, fun and music into your life. A change at home may be intense and involve a lovely reunion or trip. The more flexible you are in your response to events the better, otherwise a stalemate may be reached in a domestic context.

CARROTS I love the smell of carrots! Purple, white or orange, doesn’t matter – although orange is the most popular.
FAMILY There have been many much-loved snowmen, women and children across the centuries. More recently, Olaf (my third cousin twice removed) has become quite famous for his antics in Frozen and Frozen II.
SNOW While up to 60% of the human adult body is water, basically 100% of a snow person’s body is snow (crystalline flakes of frozen water). As Dean Martin crooned back in the day: “Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!” I can’t get enough of the cold, white stuff.
My favourite things
Frosty the Snowman
Older distant cousin of Olaf (made famous through Disney’s Frozen franchise), Frosty has been a perennial favourite since Gene Autry first sang about him in the early 1950s. An animated 1969 Christmas television special catapulted him to even greater fame. Having moved from North America to the North Pole to be safe from melting, Frosty is hopeful of remaining safe from climate change if humans can collectively do all they can to help protect planet Earth.
WINTER It’s the most wonderful time of the year; particularly here in the North Pole where winter is the most enchanting season.
KNITTING I took up knitting after being captivated by kind humans leaving colourful scarves around the “necks” (area between smaller head snowball and bigger body snowball) of my fellow snowmen, women and children. Strengthens my twiggy arms and stimulates my frozen brain.
