thursday 06 january 2022
contents 06 From the editor Welcome to 2022.
Let’s hope it’s way better than the previous 12 months when Delta and Omicron – which, ironically, is an anagram of “media control” – disrupted everyone’s lives and livelihoods. Even right up to Christmas that pesky COVID-19 was doing its utmost to ruin our festive season. Although we’re not totally out of the woods just yet, people appear to be dealing with the situation a lot more calmly. But, time will tell. One thing we do know for sure is that some form, or variant, of coronavirus appears destined to hang around for the immediate future. While there’s nothing like a good pandemic to stir everything up, here at the Newcastle Weekly, we’re eagerly anticipating what 2022 brings. Even though many residents are aware of our print publication, our web presence has grown substantially in the past year, too. And, driving that even further is a major priority for the hard-working team moving forward.

Report reveals patients presenting to EDs are ‘sicker’ A new report has revealed that patients presenting to emergency departments (ED) across the Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) are “sicker”and in need of more urgent care. Outlined in the Bureau of Health Information Health Care Quarterly data, the district also saw an increase in patients coming for emergency treatment at local hospitals. Despite it being one of the most challenging periods for staff,
patients and the community due to the COVID-19 outbreak, according to health officials, the hospitals continued to provide high quality care. HNELHD chief executive Michael DiRienzo said it showed the region’s healthcare workers performed exceptionally well under pressure. “The latest quarterly shows patients who presented to our hospitals between July and September were sicker and required

more urgent attention compared with the same period [in 2020],” he said. “Our staff took this increase in demand in their stride and continued to provide outstanding care.” ED attendances at hospitals rose during the quarter – 107,396 patients required care, an increase of 4,685 on the previous year. There was also an almost 20% increase in triage category 2 (emergency) presentations, where the patient needs to be treated within 10 minutes. More than 13,500 triage patients were cared for this quarter, an increase of 2,219 presentations compared with the previous year (11,300). This increase in critically-ill patients was a trend felt across the entire district. John Hunter Hospital experienced
a 57.4% jump in triage category 2 (emergency) and there was a 33.7% increase in triage category 3 presentations. Spikes were also observed at Muswellbrook, Belmont, Cessnock, Maitland and Singleton hospitals. Some 7,684 elective surgeries were perfomed in the district, a decrease of 352 surgeries compared with the previous year. Across the region, 98% of these procedures were delivered on time, this is well ahead of the state average of 92.3%. The best performing hospitals include Calvary Mater Newcastle, Cessnock, Muswellbrook and Singleton, whose surgical performance is on par with or better than their peer group hospitals. - Elizabeth Symington

Warners Bay Lions Club set to roar again in 2022 It appears 2022 could be a watershed moment for the Warners Bay Lions Club – and the national organisation, itself. Since its formation in Australia 75 years ago, the not-for-profit entity has grown dramatically in size and

impact with more than 1,200 groups and 25,000 members “giving back” through an array of communitybased programs and initiatives. And, over the next 12 months, there’s scope to expand even further. On 1 January, in Adelaide, Lions Australia launched a Battery Recycling Project (BRP) that is expected to reap enormous benefits not only for the ecosystem but for individual clubs throughout the country, including Warners Bay, according to local John Farrington. “For Lions, overall, it’s a massive, massive initiative,” he said. “If all the clubs get involved, we can earn a lot of money, which would then allow us to put more back into our local communities. “It’s a huge project. “But, for us at Warners Bay, it’s a
great opportunity to fly the flag, too. “To have the chance of prelaunching it in Newcastle is a real coup. “The BRP has given everyone a massive impetus moving forward. “Personally, I think it could be the biggest thing that’s happened to Lions Australia in a decade. “It’s giving every club in the nation an opportunity of going out and doing something fantastic for the environment – and generating a big income at the same time.” Mr Farrington is also hopeful the nation-wide initiative entices newcomers to the Warners Bay fold. Unfortunately, the club’s numbers have dwindled in recent years. “When I joined [Lions] in 1970, we had 80 members,” he said. “In that era, the organisation
was dynamic. However, things have changed over the past half century. “Life’s become busy for people in general. “I also believe many are fearful of putting their foot into the water – testing it – and becoming a volunteer. “We’re having difficulty attracting new members, as are many other not-for-profit organisations. “But, we’ve now come out of lockdown – and we’re keen to kick off a membership drive. “Groups like Lions and Rotary are important to any community. “I don’t think many people realise that. “However, they’d notice it if we weren’t there.” - Rod Thompson

Dex is searching for his furever home in Hunter If you’re a patient, kind and animalloving human, Dex the dog could be the perfect fit for you. The one-year-old Bull Arab X is currently searching for his forever home. Despite Dex being nervous around other animals, Dog Rescue Newcastle volunteer and marketing manager
Jesse Reinhard says he is “a lovely guy”. “With Dex he was under socialised as a puppy which means he was in a backyard and didn’t get exposed to much,” Jesse said. “He didn’t learn much about the world or interact with any people or dogs, so that means he is now quite

fearful of other dogs and other people to the point where he will tell them to go away. “With dogs it is quite common to have that fight or flight situation but Dex’s carers Phill and Jessica have been amazing in terms of his confidence building. “He’s now pretty good with people, he’s still a tiny bit nervous but he is super friendly.” When Dex meets someone new, Jesse says he just needs some space to get comfortable with the situation. Unfortunately, though, he continues to struggle with other dogs because of his lack of socialisation in the early months. “He’s more scared of them and he’ll tell them to go away but we are working everyday with him to help with that,” Jesse told Newcastle Weekly.
“But, Dex is a lovely guy and because of his size and the breed he is, it has been harder to find him a home.” Dex has been in Dog Rescue Newcastle’s care for just over six months and, as of December 2021, he had received no adoption applications at all. “His foster carers took him into their home and their hearts and are working with him every day to make him a better dog for his forever home,” Jesse said. “We believe it is out there, it is just taking a bit of time.” His ideal home would be with a couple who has no children and no other pets who can give him the exercise he needs. It starts out as art, it then needs science, a touch of patience, a dash of time, sometimes a drip, often a topper, and always a divine taste. For Killingworth mother-ofsix Telarney Rowe however, cake making has also come to rely on a supportive community. After COVID-19 threatened to derail her small business in 2021, the owner of Delights by Telarney used the time to experiment with new styles and flavours. “Baking is a science. I am very specific about temperatures and measurements,” she said. “I weigh everything to the gram.” The self-taught cake maker and decorator, who is half-way through a major renovation on her home, used the quieter time during lockdown to re-hone her craft. “I’d get creative at nighttime when the kids were in bed, 7.30pm became cake time – ‘my time’,” she told Newcastle Weekly. “I began searching Instagram for inspiration and then I’d teach myself how to make what I saw.” Her community also helped. “I’m from Muswellbrook and when I was fi rst starting out, I thought small,” she admits. “Since I moved here, I can honestly say that Newcastle is such a great networking community, they’re all really supportive, and that helps.” Now, Telarney is fast becoming renowned for her cupcakes, dessert boxes and cookies as well. But this wasn’t always the case. Although she can’t recall exactly when her talents developed, she does remember her very fi rst cake she made 12 years ago, and not with fondness. “It was my ex’s 21st and I thought I’d bake a cake for him,”
she recalled. “I found one on Pinterest and had a go at making it. “I thought it was pretty good at the time, but it was probably horrendous.” Perhaps it wasn’t as bad as she thought. Soon after, friends started asking Telarney to make cakes for their own occasions. “At fi rst it was a little bit of extra pocket money I could earn between having kids but by December 2020 I had 150 orders for teacher cookies. I made them at night, I was eight months pregnant at the time.” Her hobby has since become an obsession. “I’ve been working on my buttercream, trying to get it the best it can be. It’s a process. “I’ve been experimenting for a while now and I think I’ve got it.” Yet, with up to six children in the family home at one time Telarney says it is space that she now needs most. “I’d like to try making some celebration cakes next,” she said. “I’ll move into styling cakes and wedding cakes, tiers and florals, and spend more time on building my business. “I’ve got lots of ideas in my head. “I’ll just need to fi nish the renovations and have some space for my cakes, maybe I’ll market the tools that I use as well.” And what sweet treat does a cake maker and decorator prefer above all others? “We’ve all been smelling buttercream and chocolate all day every day in this house, so when there’s a family occasion none of us can go past a simple light and fluffy sponge cake, as plain as it comes,” she said. - Rebecca Riddle

Boy & Bear: New management, new Hunter gig This year looks set to be a big one for Australian chart-toppers Boy & Bear. After signing with UNIFIED Artists Management and its Lonely Lands booking agency last month, the popular group will also perform at the SummerSalt Festival at Roche Estate in the Hunter Valley on Saturday 29 January. On top of that, one of the nation’s most successful bands of the past decade heads back to the studio to begin production of its much-anticipated fifth album. The past few months have seen Boy & Bear return to the top of festival line-up announcements, sell out multiple headline shows including the State Theatre in Sydney, and team up with UNIFIED Artist Management’s Aidan
McLaren and Joe Miles, and Lonely Lands with agent Harry Moore. “We couldn’t be more excited to be working with Boy & Bear,” McLaren said. “They are just such a compelling band. “Amazing songwriters, incredible live. “They’ve achieved so much already and yet there is so much more to come. “I can’t wait for people to hear the new music the guys are working on and to see what’s in store over the next 18 months and beyond. “Watch this space.” All four of Boy & Bear’s previous albums have reached Top 10 on the ARIA Albums Chart, with two of them hitting No 1.
Their debut offering Moonfire (2011) secured double-Platinum sales, won five ARIA Awards with three songs in the triple j Hottest 100. Their sophomore album Harlequin Dream (2013) achieved Platinum certification and the No 1 spot on the ARIA Albums Chart, staying in the Top 10 for five weeks. They followed it up with Limit Of Love (2015), resulting in their second ARIA No 1 debut. Their last album, Suck On Light (2019), also reached the Top 10 of the ARIA Albums Chart and further consolidated their reputation, connection, creativity and was voted in Richard Kingsmill’s Top 10 LPs that year. For a band that consistently averages more than one million
Spotify monthly listeners, regularly sells out venues globally and has a growing international fan base, Boy & Bear’s future is looking bright.

WHY STRENGTH TRAINING? Let’s get one thing straight: you won’t find any body builders staring at themselves in a mirror here. Sure we lift big weights, but we go at your own pace in safe, monitored training sessions.
We want more people to try strength training, because we know that walking and running isn’t enough to keep you in peak physical health (that’s why the Australian Physical Activity Guidelines recommend strength training at least twice a week for all adults). By lifting weights, you’ll experience a whole range of health benefits, including: •
Reduced risk of injury from everyday activities
•
Strength and energy to do things you love
•
Stronger bones and joints
•
Better mobility
•
Physical ability to live independently
•
Improved posture
Plus, unlike a face cream, exercise really does slow down the ageing process. So while we can’t help with those wrinkles, strength training will build up the muscle mass you need to delay the frailty, aches and pains of old age

Rhodes’ hoping River Haus a Morpeth boon Newcastle travel and lifestyle writer, photographer and blogger Sheridan Rhodes has found a new love. Having spent years contributing to an array of publications, Ms Rhodes recently turned her attention to Morpeth. Incorporating all her style and learned design techniques, together with the skills of property developer partner Tom Szecsodi as well as local tradesmen, she’s launched a luxe new accommodation in the historic township. The River Haus is the result of 12 months of hard work, she told Newcastle Weekly. “My husband and I have poured more than a year of blood, sweat and tears into reinventing this property,” she said. “We’re very proud of what we’ve achieved.”
Now in le t Newcas
The quintessential country cottage sits a stone’s throw from the Hunter River, overlooking the historic St James’ Anglican Church. It is a short stroll to Morpeth’s heritage-listed main street and the township’s highly-acclaimed Boydell’s Cellar Door and Restaurant. Set behind a white picket fence, The River Haus can accommodate up to four guests and is designed with couples in mind. Having searched tirelessly for unique fittings for the venue, Ms Rhodes hopes the home offers the perfect blend of vintage and antique treasures, together with luxury and curated comfort. When she speaks of the increasingly popular lower Hunter township, the experienced traveller can’t help but be nostalgic.
“We love Morpeth, Australia’s second oldest river port,” she said. “This quaint river-side town offers old school pubs, local artisans, sandstone buildings, cafes, the historic Arnott Bakehouse and a rare timber truss road bridge which spans the Hunter River. “You can take a carriage ride pulled by Clydesdales, shop at farm
gates and taste award-winning small batch wines paired with a seasonal menu at Boydell’s housed in a restored 1850s slab timber building. “We hope our new venture sheds light on Morpeth’s storied past and its significant role in the development of the Hunter and the fledgling colony.” - Rebecca Riddle

R E A L E S TAT E
Real Estate 2022: What’s in store for the industry? After a year of record-breaking sales and unprecedented value growth, real estate industry experts say 2022 is looking to soften. The tightening of debt accrual, fewer foreign investors and worsening affordability constraints are all signalling the end of 2021’s unprecedented activity. In a CoreLogic Outlook for 2022 report, the real estate industry
Sydney still sees Newcastle as really good value.
analysts cited “softer growth rates are likely to coincide with fewer purchases”. But, what about the Hunter region? Property buyers agent Chad Dunn says the first quarter of 2022 could be all about our big city neighbour. “The biggest thing facing us in February is if China goes into Taiwan,” he said. “That’s what top-end clients in Sydney are saying. They’re watching the situation very carefully. “I’m not saying that it’ll be a world war, but it will send shock waves to the stock market and in turn to the property market.” In the three months to October, housing finance data shows the
amount of money loaned for the purchase of property fell 6.3% compared to the previous quarter. Mr Dunn believes these numbers are irrelevant when money moves out of a capital city and into regional suburbs. “Sydney still sees Newcastle as really good value,” he told Newcastle Weekly. “In fact, it’s only Newcastle locals trying to enter the market that say otherwise. I think growth will continue in 2022 for properties with a lifestyle factor, properties with a bush outlook, a sea view or lake access, and let’s face it that’s all here in Newcastle.” Port Stephens is another region on Mr Dunn’s radar.
“It’s really coming into its own at the moment,” he said. “We’re starting to see Newcastle locals pushed out of the market move further north to Port Stephens and commute to work. “While Sydney buyers are heading into Newcastle, Newcastle is moving into Port Stephens.” Demographers might agree. “You’ve probably heard of the 2022 great resignation predictions,” Mr Dunn said. “I think we’ll see more and more people seeking employment that allows them to work remotely, and I think regional areas like Port Stephens and the Hunter Valley will benefit from this.” - Rebecca Riddle

You’ll appreciate the chance to build something new in your personal life, but must be careful to look after your health, especially during stressful turning points in May and/or november. Your domestic life and property will present major choices this year, so choose wisely.
It’s a year of change for you, so be flexible. Your biggest area of focus in 2022 will be your finances and values and February and the second half of the year will bring life-changing choices. The eclipses in May and October will potentially bring changes in your relationships too.
2022 is an ideal year to build a solid base, especially financially. However, you may be inclined to be easily distracted or even misled so be careful. Your domestic realm will be the scene of much change such as a move, travel or renovation and this will affect your work prospects.
Your personal life will be the focus in 2022 and this could also mean considerable domestic change. Health will be in the spotlight - physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally. May’s eclipse will highlight how to best share your finances and duties with someone special.

This is an excellent year to embrace a fresh path that resonates with you so that you gain a deeper sense of fulfilment. The circles you interact with will be a reflection of your deeper interests and others will begin to see you in a new light. It’s a good year to drop bad habits.
In 2022, the nexus for change will be the shared areas of your life such as your space at home, work collaborations and joint finances. You’ll crave freedom of movement and yet also security. You’ll find the fine line between the two, especially in april and november.
2022 is an excellent year to feather your nest! Your home life and how you pursue your interests from home will take much of your focus. Think laterally about fresh ways to go about your duties and commitments. You’ll enjoy being more adventurous with your past-times.
Your domestic responsibilities will take much of the spotlight in 2022, with developments at work and concerning health driving your main choices at home and with family. Major changes affecting personal and business relationships will occur in May and november.
