You have to hand it to Ash Barty, that was an amazing performance to capture the Australian Open women’s crown at the weekend. In fact, I rate it better than Cathy Freeman’s effort to secure the Gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. While the sprinter had the weight of the nation upon her shoulders, and came up trumps, so did Barty. But, unlike Freeman, she was forced to do it on seven occasions over a two-week period. That’s how many consecutive matches she needed to win to break a 44-year-old drought. And, to achieve it without dropping a set (6-0 6-1 v Tsurenko, 6-1 6-1 v Bronzetti, 6-2 6-3 v Giorgi, 6-4 6-3 v Anisimova, 6-2 6-0 v Pegula, 6-1 6-3 v Keys and 6-3 7-6 v Collins) is even more remarkable. The introduction of her hero Evonne Goolagong Cawley to the presentation afterwards was a beautiful moment, too. Hopefully, Barty’s historic run, fighting spirit and gracious nature will inspire many youngsters in the Hunter to pick up a racquet. Now, that would be a story… a Novocastrian taking on the world’s best to claim our nation’s biggest tennis trophy on home soil. Until next week, keep smiling.

New principal excited for school’s journey in 2022 When Lucy Harvey went to work on Tuesday, it marked a week “filled with excitement and anticipation”. The educator finally got to welcome students back to school in her new role as principal of St Patrick’s Primary in Swansea.
“It is an exciting journey to be a part of a new school community and lead them in the next stage of their education life,” she said. The 56-year-old has been in the field for 33 years; she couldn’t imagine doing anything else. “I always knew I was going to

be a teacher, I had a passion for it from a very early age,” she said. “I enjoyed my catholic education growing up and some of my role models when I was young were my teachers, so it was just something that I knew I was destined to be.” Despite the return to school coming with some fear thanks to COVID-19, Ms Harvey says “the kids will be in a safe and supportive environment”. “The teachers and I want to make this transition back into the school year as easy as possible,” the Swansea-based educator said. “Have confidence that we’re all doing the right thing and protecting the children.” Ms Harvey added parents should reach out if they are struggling.
“We are here, even though you physically can’t come on site. We’re only a phone call or an email away,” she said. To help alleviate some stress, the school has supplied families with the necessary resources to allow children to take their twiceweekly rapid antigen tests (RATs). “We want to assist with that at home which I think has been a very positive move on our behalf to ease that [anxiety],” Ms Harvey said. “I think it’s one of the hardest things for the parents to try and get the kids to do the RAT tests twice a week. It can be quite daunting for some, especially students that have sensory issues so we’re hoping that the story will help alleviate some of that stress from parents.” - Elizabeth Symington

Popular Newcastle Show will be Greater in 2022 One hundred and twenty years of competition, culture and connection will come to the fore when the Newcastle Show powered by Greater Bank returns in 2022. The much-loved extravaganza is set to celebrate its 120th anniversary at the Newcastle Showground on 4, 5 and 6 March. And, with
the announcement on Monday 24 January of the Repco Newcastle 500 being postponed that same weekend, organisers are preparing to welcome big crowds again. “The Show has endured much adversity since it began, from war and storms to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic,” recently-

appointed general manager Emma Spencer said. “But, it still has a place in the hearts of thousands of showgoers. “Now that Supercars is no longer going ahead, the local community will nevertheless have a huge amount of great entertainment over the weekend of 4, 5 and 6 March. “Our professional and experienced team of staff and volunteers, which make up the strong backbone, will deliver an amazing event in such a time of uncertainty. “As in 2021, during COVID-19, we’ll follow NSW Health advice and comply with all government protocols to ensure attendees remain safe. “We will continue to monitor guidelines closely and make changes if they become necessary.” Ms Spencer reserved plenty of praise for Greater Bank.
“I’d like to commend them, as our major sponsor, for their ongoing support of The Show,” she said. Back on the program in 2022 will be the familiar and popular showbags, more than 100 highadrenaline, family and kids’ amusements and games, three days of continuous on-stage and roving entertainment, interactive industry exhibits, BMX, camel and lawn mower races, plenty of motor vehicles, centre ring activities featuring showjumping, woodchop, post splitting and all the traditional components of an agricultural show. Fabulous “live” bands are also scheduled from 6pm each evening and, to top it off, the spectacular fireworks display on Fridays and Saturdays at 9pm. Tickets are now on sale at newcastleshow.com.au

New Tocal Field Days manager set to grow event New Tocal Field Days manager Charise Foulstone is relishing the opportunity to plan the Hunter’s premier agricultural and community show. This year’s event is set to take
New Tocal Field Days manager Charise Foulstone.
place from 29 April to 1 May following a record occasion in 2021. More than 28,000 people attended after COVID-19 prevented it from going ahead in 2020. Ms Foulstone said Tocal Field Days would be a great way for farmers and the agriculture sector to again come together after a tough couple of years to learn from each other and showcase the importance of farming to the community. She said all the favourite activities and displays will return plus some new initiatives to create a fun, educational and entertaining day out for the community, especially families. Now, the event team is calling for exhibitors and sponsors. “Last year’s exhibitors are
coming back again but we always have room for more,” Ms Foulstone said. “We’re looking for exhibitors for our new caravan and camping area, Caravan Alley, as well as children’s entertainment providers. “This year we have Produce Way sites so local producers can showcase and sell their fabulous food grown right here in the Hunter.” One new exhibitor in 2022 is the Upper Hunter’s Clydesdale Experience. At its Doyles Creek property, near Singleton, the business offers people an opportunity to spend some time in the life of a Clydesdale horse. “Tocal Field Days visitors will get the chance to see these magnificent gentle giants in action
and meet them face-to -face after the demonstration,” Ms Foulstone said. The local Greta resident has experience in putting on a great show, having spent eight years as event manager at Hunter Valley Gardens and Roche Estate. As a trained wool classer, she also has a connection to farming and agriculture. She said this year’s theme was “Grow” with a focus on technology and clever ways the agricultural sector could continue to grow. “It’s fitting because our farmers grow fantastic produce to feed us, the agricultural sector is always growing and developing and Tocal Field Days is growing as a premier community event,” she stated. Tickets are expected to go on sale in March.

Retiring Jeff Tamsett heads off on new adventure Vessel scheduler Jeff Tamsett has bid Port of Newcastle (PoN) farewell after nearly 40 years working in all facets of its operations, having witnessed incredible change as the industry and technology has shifted to meet changing global demands. The popular employee first joined PoN, then Maritime Services Board,
in early 1982 as an electrician in anticipation of the Port’s expansion to support the growing demand for Australian coal. He completed his electrical apprenticeship in 1977 with Electric Lamp Manufacturers of Australia, which produced its last light globe in April 2002, after more than 70 years in production.
Jeff Tamsett has bid farewell to Port of Newcastle after almost 40 years.

“At the time the Port was set to undergo major development of the coal loading terminals along Kooragang Island,” Mr Tamsett said. “The only infrastructure along Kooragang was the old bulk unloaders at the K2 berth. “The original Carrington coal loader was operating as well as the BHP steelworks along Dyke berths four and five.” Mr Tamsett has navigated an interesting career beginning as electrician, a stint in the property department, completing his coxswain ticket and moving to the pilot’s station, then manning Nobby’s signal station at the Lighthouse, through to the Vessel Traffic Information Centre at NSW Port Authority. PoN CEO Craig Carmody praised the departing team member, stating he’d made an immeasurable contribution to the Port of Newcastle throughout his career. “Over an impressive 39 years, Jeff has navigated an interesting career working across almost every aspect of port operations,” he said. “In this time, he’s made an incredible contribution to Port of Newcastle as it has evolved and continues to do so today, as we seek to diversify the Port for the future. “I would like to congratulate Jeff on an impressive career and we wish him all the best for a safe and happy retirement.” On occasion in the early days, Mr Tamsett said he had the opportunity to operate the control room, loading coal onto ships as at the time electricians were often redeployed to backfill control room technicians. He finishes a varied and vibrant career at the helm of port operations as a vessel scheduler, a role he says he took up at the time of privatisation five years ago due to the appealing challenging nature of the work. “In line with coal terminals,
shipping agents and NSW Port Authority, you are charged with curating a 24-hour program of shipping movements,” he explained. “There’s a bit of responsibility in the role. “It is all well and good when your parameters are in order, but on any day a curve ball can be thrown, in the form of a weather event, a ship arriving late, a sick pilot, or an event further down the supply chain. “Then you have to adapt that plan and make good decisions on the run. A lot of things you won’t learn unless you’ve been with a place for a long time.” Reflecting on his career, Mr Tamsett said the variety of work across port operations and the passionate people he has worked with made his time immensely enjoyable. “Looking back, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working there,” he added. “When there is interesting work on offer at a place like the Port it tends to attract enthusiastic people and create that sense of community. “I had the chance to work with many great minds and work in half a dozen different roles, this has made it go quite quickly.” As a major infrastructure asset, Mr Tamsett said PoN had been at the forefront of many changes in infrastructure, technology and environmental management. “Having been in a business working in the field for such a long time, I’ve seen technology, processes and infrastructure change firsthand,” he stated. “From what we now consider pretty basic to a level you had never expected. It is magnificent to see the changes in how we approach the environment.” After nearly 40 years, the fatherof-three has more than earned his retirement and plans to hit the road in a motor home and travel to all corners of Australia at a leisurely pace with his wife.

Bert Le-Merton posthumously honoured with OAM The late Sergeant Bert Le-Merton’s incredible life has been recognised with a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM). The WWII veteran passed away
The late Bert-Le Merton has been honoured with a Medal of the Order of Australia.
in December at 103 years old after dedicating much of his life to others. According to his son Trent LeMerton, receiving the OAM was an incredible honour. “Dad would have said the award was ‘remarkable’ or ‘extraordinary’,” he said. “To our family, it is well deserved, and we are grateful that he was nominated and given such an accolade for doing something for such a worthy cause. This is a wonderful acknowledgement for a great Australian.” Sergeant Bert enlisted in national service on 27 May 1940 in the 2/13th Battalion, 20th Brigade, 9th Division Australian Infantry Forces (AIF). Less than 12 months later he became a member of the first Australian Regiment to engage in battle with the German Army in WWII.
Bert later became a member of the 3 Section Mortar Platoon, Australia’s legendary ‘Rats of Tobruk’. In 1942 he spent time in Palestine and Syria, as well as in the Pacific, New Guinea and Borneo. Bert then committed the later years of his life to find ways to help contemporary veterans by raising funds and awareness for Soldier On, a support system for Australia’s defence personnel and their families. By March 2021, the passionate Lake Macquarie resident had raised a whopping $111,000 for the charity through their March On campaign – an initiative that asks participants to walk 96 kilometres during the third month of the year – a distance equivalent to the Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea. His extraordinary efforts have been widely recognised within the veteran community and greater
Australian public, including the award of Finalist in the 2022 NSW Australian Senior of the Year Awards. Soldier On CEO Ivan Slavich said the charity was honoured to have had Bert, a true Australian legend, supporting the March On campaign. “Sergeant Bert continues to be an inspiration to us all and is incredibly deserving of this wonderful award,” he said. “Thanks to his commitment and tireless efforts throughout the campaign and beyond, we saw an enhanced national conversation on the issue of veteran suicide and the challenges that the community faces. “Sergeant Bert set an example for us all and taught us the value in walking the walk for a cause you believe in. The Soldier On team will hold true to Bert’s example.” Sergeant Bert will remain as the Patron of March On in 2022.

Seniors encouraged to have their hearts checked If you’re over the age of 65, it’s time to get your heart checked. That’s a message from Dr Rohan Bhagwandeen and local resident and retired minister Alan. The duo has come together to bring awareness to a statistic not enough people know about – more than half a million Australians are living with heart valve disease and a lot of them don’t even know it. For Alan, it is a very personal mission. The 81-year-old is living with aortic stenosis (a type of heart valve disease). In July 2021 Alan underwent a TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation) surgery. “The TAVI procedure is done under local anesthetic and we place a tube into a blood vessel in your groin and we thread it up under x-ray vision into your heart,” interventional
cardiologist at John Hunter Hospital and Lake Macquarie Private Hospital Dr Bhagwandeen said. “We load a new heart valve onto a little balloon and place that over the narrowed heart valve and essentially inflate the balloon and it squashes the old one out of the way and the new one starts working immediately.” Alan says he was in hospital for three or four days and has been feeling a lot better since he returned home. He encourages everyone to get a heart check – he had no family history of heart disease and, apart from some issues with blood pressure, has been healthy all his life. “My advice for people even younger than me is to go and get your heart checked regularly,” he said. “If I hadn’t gone to the doctor in all these years, I would probably be dead.
“People need to watch their heart, there could be any number of heart issues that you don’t know you are living with.” Dr Bhagwandeen echoed Alan’s sentiments. “Sixty-five is a good time to start having a think about this,” he said. “If you felt you were indestructible it is still time to go along and have a listen to your heart because the
symptoms are quite deceptive. “They are shortness of breath, reduction of exercise tolerance and that’s often misattributed to just getting older. “A lot of people that I see say I feel pretty good but then when I ask what they were doing three months ago they realise a lot has changed. “When heart valve disease starts it can be pretty silent.”
Alan (centre) says getting a heart check saved his life.

Fruit Filo Cups Serves: 24
pastry into 5cm squares.
Time: 35 minutes
Brush with butter substitute and stack 3 of them together at odd angles and gently press into the tin, folding down the rough edges slightly. Bake for 6-8 minutes, till golden brown. Wait for them to cool completely before removing.
1 packet filo pastry 2 tbs butter substitute (e.g. Nuttalex), melted 1 packet (250g) light cream cheese 1 tsp lemon rind, finely grated 2 tsp low GI honey Vanilla bean paste Fresh fruit to top (such as cherries, raspberries, blueberries, strawberries) Extra lemon zest
In a medium bowl mix together the light cream cheese, honey and lemon rind until smooth. To prevent soggy bases, fill your filo bases (about 3/4 full) just before serving (no more than 30 minutes or so). Arrange fruit on top and micro plane some extra lemon zest over the top.
Note
Pre-heat oven to 180°C (350°F).
If you’d like your filo cups to have a hint of chocolate, leave out the lemon and shave a light dusting of 70% dark chocolate over the top.
Prepare a mini-muffin baking tray with a very light brushing of the melted butter substitute. Work with one sheet of filo pastry at a time, keeping the remainder covered with a damp tea towel. Unroll the pastry, and using a pair of scissors, cut

1/2 tsp ground nutmeg, sifted 2 heaped Tbs of chopped crystallised ginger 1 cup raisins OR dried currants 1 cup chopped walnuts OR pecans 2 ripe persimmons, peeled and pureed Preheat oven to 180ºC or 170ºC fan forced.
Using a teaspoon, place small dollops of remaining Mayver’s Cacao Super Spread over the top of the batter and use a toothpick to create swirls.
With an electric cake mixer, beat butter, sugar and salt until pale and fluffy. Add egg and beat until combined. Add persimmon puree and mix with a wooden spoon until combined. Add flour, baking powder, ginger, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg, and mix with a wooden spoon until combined. Add raisins or currants and nuts, and mix until combined.

cover story Gavin Morris with his fiancé Sari and their one-month-old daughter Ellie. Photos: Peter Stoop
Gavin says he is excited for this chapter of his life.
Clear skies ahead for hardworking Gavin When Gavin Morris started reading weather charts as a teenager, he had no idea it would lead him to where he is now. Driven by his love of surfing, the Woodberry youngster wanted to know what day would be best to jump on a train to Newcastle to ride some waves. “I’d get the [local paper] and I used to go to the weather page to learn how to read the synoptic chart,” he said. “I was trying to understand because I was catching the train and up in the Valley it was a westerly wind and the skies were blue but I’d get down here and it was a southerly, totally different and I thought I need to understand because I am blowing my hard-earned milk money on the train ride and it was totally pointless. “Then Des Hart (former NBN News weatherman) came to my school - he was the first person from television that I ever met - and I got his weather book and it started from there.” His thirst to understand the atmosphere continued to get stronger when he sailed halfway around the world on a 100-year-old square rigger. Gavin boarded the ship in Scotland and then travelled across
the Mediterranean and the Atlantic to New York. Now, his weather obsession is driven by his love of paragliding. During his years in New York, Gavin says he was “infatuated with knowledge and news” about weather and the world in general. “It was actually my best friend in New York that said ‘you know what, you’d be a great weatherman, the way you explain it you make it interesting and I can understand it’,” he said. What started as an “incredible hobby” led to jobs with National Geographic, ESPN and NBC, but after the 9/11 attacks he returned to Australia and got a job with the Weather Channel. “Then I went and spent time with the Bureau of Meteorology in Melbourne and gained more accreditation and became senior forecaster at the channel,” he said. After these life-changing experiences, Gavin scored what he describes as the “best job in television” at NBN News. He’s worked at the studio for almost 13 years, but local weatherman and presenter are just two of the roles he now plays. Together with his fiancé Sari
Kelana, the proud Novocastrian recently welcomed one-month-old Ellie Jade to the world. He says being a father to little Ellie as well as his 16-year-old son Phoenix is “unreal”. “There's a huge advantage to being an older dad because you’ve done it before and it’s not as overwhelming. “I've always wanted the pigeon pair, I wanted them back-to-back but it’s actually pretty good having this gap,” he said. And, while one minute he is changing nappies and the other he is driving his son to a job interview, he is thoroughly enjoying the full spectrum of parenting. Even though it will be a balancing act juggling fatherhood with his new role on the news desk, with support from his family, Gavin says he is ready for the next part of his life. “We’ve spoken about it a lot and we're ready for it,” he said. “Sari is an amazing woman and she knows it is going to be challenging as any young mum does but we’re all good with it and I’ve spoken to my son, we’ve all had big conversations.” His return, however, is tinged with a bit of sadness after Paul Lobb’s shock departure.
“It was completely unexpected, I didn't see this coming,” he said. “I had a cry with Lobby on the phone, I was upset, like we all were. “When they were telling me I was thinking ‘this is a bombshell moment [but] I am listening to some of the smartest minds in Australian television and all I can do is trust them’.” However, Gavin was fully prepared for the backlash that came with the decision. “It’s harsh but I knew it was coming,” he said. “It’s understandable; I mean this community has this connection to NBN and they’re angry. “They went through all of the emotions and naturally you always lash out at the closest person to you, and I was the closest person to Lobby and I have taken the role and it was totally expected. There is no easy way to go through this process.” Moving forward, he knows exactly what he needs to do. “All I can do is do my best and live up to the legacy of NBN,” he told Newcastle Weekly. “Stick with us, it’s going to be a big year of change and growth but what is coming is actually really exciting.” - Elizabeth Symington newcastleweekly.com.au

Vegetables and summer flowering annuals should be boosted weekly The last three months of the yearly garden calendar:
OCTOBER…
Prune spring flowering peaches immediately after flowering finishes. Give bottle brush a light clip now that flowering has finished. Camellias and azaleas should be fertilised after they finish flowering, using a slow-release fertiliser for potted plants. Ground-grown camellias should be fed with cow manure ready to stimulate new growth before buds begin to set. Once spring bulbs finish flowering, it can be tempting to cut off the foliage when it begins to yellow. This should be left to die back as it is when protein is developed within the bulbs to increase production for the next season. One of the first jobs I do this month is check the new growth on roses, which are prone to aphid attack. However, a rose spray can be used, Malathon or Pyrethrum. Now the weather is settled, it is fine to re-pot
Now in le t Newcas
indoor plants that have outgrown their pots. If this isn’t necessary, turn over the top soil and add some new mix or peat moss which I prefer. Then begin fertiliser with Searles Green Flourish regularly.
NOVEMBER…
Vegetables and summer flowering annuals should be boosted weekly with a soluble fertiliser. If necessary, climbing roses can be pruned once flowering has finished - never prune climbers for at least two years after planting. Whether pruning or not, apply Sudden Impact once flowering has finished. Native plants such as Grevilleas may need pruning now… you can wait until flowering has finished and apply a native fertiliser or blood and bone in small amounts. Fruit fly will definitely attack tomatoes and other ripening vegetables and stone fruit. Painting tomatoes stakes with a paintable mix of Malathon and Vegemite can be a helpful deterrent as well as fly traps which lure in the female fly. Be sure to
clean up any infected fruit and dispose of it. Leaving it in the garden will encourage multiplication of the fly for next season.
DECEMBER…
Christmas is nearly here and you may have holidays planned - if so, don’t leave your garden on holiday as well. Arrange for a neighbour, friend or family to water daily, which is necessary during the heat of summer. It is wise to mulch your garden regardless of home or holidays. Use peat moss around the root surface of azaleas and camellias, while mulching the rest of the garden with sugar cane. If you haven’t yet planted out flowering colour for Christmas this needs to be done quickly - do so after fertilising garden beds with cow manure. Living not-cut Christmas trees are popular they will require a saucer so they can be watered regularly. Find a well-lit spot near a window or door for fresh air and enjoy.

Health and wellbeing will be a focus for crown Princess mary over the coming year as her strength as a leader and the example she sets to others comes under the spotlight. Her position as a strong, modern role model will be highlighted and this may paradoxically come about through the acknowledgment of her own sensitivities and compassion, and the demonstration that strength can be developed over time.

You could negotiate a key agreement with a colleague, personal partner or an organisation, and this will pave the way for fresh projects. focus on the good news this week rather than dwelling on disappointments. news may come unexpectedly from a group, organisation or friend. avoid impulsive decisions.

EARLY MORNING WALKS There is no better way to start the day than an early morning walk, catching the sun as it rises. And there is no better place to walk than around our fabulous Newcastle beaches.
URBAN ADVENTURES I am always energised by the urban environment and love uncovering the small pockets of nature, forgotten walks or beautiful buildings that inhabit our cities. A recent find was the Yarra Trail in Melbourne which is a corridor of pristine bushland following the Yarra River, and all within sight of the city skyscrapers.Even a rainy-day ride can boost my spirits.
GIRAFFES I have been fascinated by these beautiful, unique animals since I was a young child. My ambition is to travel to Kenya to see them in the wild but that might have to wait a while until international travel is once again possible.
My favourite things
Jennifer Leslie
ART I am not an artist but one of my favourite things to do is visit art galleries wherever I go. I find gallery spaces so peaceful and love that art can be beautiful, confronting or invocative. Street art is also a favourite and I love that it’s all around us, where we live and work.
Chair, Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation Jennifer is the first female chair of the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation, which helps innovative grassroots charities rewrite the future of people facing disadvantage in regional communities by providing $1.5 million in grants each year. The daughter of a BHP steelworker, Jennifer is a proud Novocastrian and has a well-established career forged in the Hunter region, including as a director of Newcastle Permanent Building Society and 14 years as the inaugural Managing Director of Pitcher Partners Newcastle and Hunter Wealth Management.
PEOPLE WHO HELP RE-WRITE FUTURES I am privileged through my work at Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation to meet amazing, passionate people who are truly helping to re-write the future for those experiencing disadvantage. I have met people dedicated to improving the lives of women escaping domestic violence or assisting someone with a disability to live their best life. These people nourish our society, representing everything that is good in humanity. newcastleweekly.com.au
