I guess it was no surprise to see voters turning their backs on the NSW Government at the by-elections at the weekend. Take the pandemic, and probably a bit of angst over former Premier Gladys Berejiklian’s demise, out of the equation, and there were still plenty of warning signs. The state’s teachers and transport workers have not been happy for a while, both initiating industrial action for fairer pay. And, now, you can throw our overworked nurses, doctors and midwives into the mix. Even from a local perspective, with the Hunter New England Local Health District recording the highest number of COVID-19 cases in the state, they’ve been under the pump recently. Add to that, the NSW Ambulance paramedics who’ll also strike on Thursday. Sadly, where there’s smoke, there’s usually fire. With so many essential workers dismayed by the way they’re being disrespected, current leader Dominic Perrottet was certain to feel the heat. If losing the seat of Bega for the first time in three decades wasn’t enough of a wake-up call, surely the swing against the Liberals will be noticed by the powers-that-be. They’d better start listening to the people before it’s too late.

Jump on your bike to support a cause this March Sam Budden, Adrian Gardner and Warwick Bartley are just three of many who are doing what they can to support Camp Quality Newcastle. The Hunter locals have been helping the charity since 2015 by participating in and organising the annual Motocyc 4 Kids fundraiser.

It’s a three-day event that calls on motorcyclists to ride from Heatherbrae to Port Macquarie with a return trip to Newcastle while raising funds and awareness of the organisation that supports children living with cancer. If you love adventures and helping

others, the trio believes the event is perfect for you. “I’m probably a tad bias, but I think it’s the best fundraising event you can be involved in,” Sam said. “It’s all about meeting new people – like minded individuals who have a passion to help those who are less fortunate and are doing it tough and you’re also part of the education process when we visit the schools with the Camp Quality puppeteers who teach kids about cancer. “It’s just an absolute blast from start to finish.” This year the team’s goal is to raise $150,000. Adrian says it’s incredible knowing the funds you collect from family, friends and the community will have a big impact on the people the charity helps. “Camp Quality is underfunded, under-resourced and overworked but

they always do it with a smile on their face – they could do so much more with a little bit more,” he said. Warwick adds supporting the charity is why they all do it. “It’s totally the motivation and the drive and the reason why we all do it so it feels amazing knowing it helps,” he said. “I just love the fact that the event is supporting Camp Quality Newcastle and the families that are going through that unfortunate journey with their kids that are impacted by cancer. “It just feels right – you are doing something that you love but it is also making a difference to families in the region.” The Motocyc event will be hosted from Friday 25 to Sunday 27 March. Mosaic packs a punch of colour at James Street Plaza The revitalisation of a mosaic project is set to further enhance Hamilton’s rich history and culture.

Project coordinator Paul Maher, tiler Mark Johnson and artist Jasmine Craciun with the mosaic. Photo: Peter Stoop

An appreciative crowd witnessed the installation of the colourful work at James Street Plaza last Friday morning, which drew praise from Hamilton Business Improvement Association (HBIA) chair Evan Reid. “This project helps tell the stories of Hamilton’s diverse community,” he said. “It’s a great representation of what can be achieved with a little collaboration and the SBR funding. “It has been a pleasure to liaise and support coordinator Paul [Maher]. “We love that he worked so closely with local artists, art schools and our heritage advisor Ruth Cotton to pull this all together. “The series of mosaics will cross cultural and social divides. “Each illustrates one of the many narratives that form the rich migrant

history of the centre. “The art pieces will also contribute to a liveable built environment by reinforcing the community’s sense of identity through story telling.” Mr Maher carried out a mosaic project in Beaumont Street for City of Newcastle in the 1990s after the Newcastle earthquake shattered much of the precinct’s main thoroughfare. And, they’ve stood the test of time after more than 30 years. “You may have noticed these colourful pavement tiles as you stroll along Beaumont Street,” Mr Reid said. “Each artwork celebrates a specific business sector and the history of the area. “We approached Paul some 18 months ago with the view to install more pavement art to assist with street beautification.

“He undertook a lot of community consultation around the designs and, after final approval by council’s Public Art Reference Group, the first mosaic was installed at the corner of Beaumont and Tudor streets.” The latest installation, unveiled on 11 February, was that of local indigenous boxer Dave Sands. “Tom Maguire’s boxing gym was on Beaumont Street,” Mr Reid said. “It was where Dave first started boxing at 15. Artist Jasmine Craciun has created a beautiful piece to celebrate his impact on Newcastle and the world. “She is a proud descendant of the Barkindji and Malyangapa people of Far Western NSW, however she grew up by the sea in Newcastle. “We’re absolutely delighted with the final result.” - Rod Thompson

Maitland ‘Old Girls’ to host 50-year school reunion It was the year the last man was hanged in Australia, The Duke of Edinburgh toured down under, Aboriginals were first included on the census, a postcode system was introduced, and singer Johnny Farnham released Sadie (The Cleaning Lady).

The year was 1967. Inside an East Maitland classroom of what was once the only high school in Australia outside Sydney, a group of girls were studiously undertaking their first year of secondary school. And while some left the education system in fourth form in 1970, others

remained until sixth form, graduating in 1972, but all will wear the idiomatic label of ‘Old Girls’ forever. Fast forward half a century and half-a-dozen Maitland Girls’ High School Old Girl’s Union members, now aged in their sixties, have formed The Golden Reunion Team and are in the final stages of planning a 50-year anniversary for the 1967 ‘first form’. Anne Robinson (nee Stephens) is one of the members encouraging former classmates to attend the event that will celebrate the Cumberland Street site that is now known as Maitland Grossmann High School. “A high school year reunion gives everyone a chance to reconnect with old friends, to remember the fun times in school, and celebrate with people you may not have seen for many years and, sadly, may have lost touch with,” she says.

“Many Maitland Girls High School students who started high school in 1967 and left in 1970 or 1972 are getting excited about coming together this year for their Golden Reunion in March. “Facebook has seen a flurry of activity from ex-students who will meet at East Maitland Golf Club for lunch and are now communicating from all areas across NSW. “People who have moved far away are now hoping they will be able to make travel plans to attend, despite the current COVID-19 restrictions.” The Maitland Girls’ High School 50 Year Reunion will be held on Saturday 12 March at the East Maitland Golf Club from noon. The event costs $55 and includes a light lunch. Contact Lee Osborne on 0412 156 692 for further details. - Rebecca Riddle

Winding through coastal wilderness, a revamped walkway with spectacular beach views is making waves at Redhead. The northern section of the Ken and Audrey Owens Walkway has been closed for the past eight months to allow for a complete reconstruction of the 500 metre pathway, with a new raised deck installed along its entire length. Lake Macquarie City Council manager community assets Brendan Callander says the path offers residents the opportunity to see threatened ecological communities including freshwater wetlands and swamp forest. “A range of threatened native species has been recorded nearby, including the powerful owl and the large bent-winged bat, so this really is a special place to preserve and appreciate,” he said.

“The old walkway was at the end of its life cycle, and this new structure makes the path more accessible and more enjoyable, and makes it easier to take in the flora, fauna and views.” Seats are due to be installed at regular intervals by the end of the month along the new section, which starts at Webb Park. Mayor Kay Fraser said the spot was ideal for exercising, walking dogs on leads or bird-watching. “I’m so glad this wonderful walkway is once again open to the community,” she said. “It’s a magical feeling walking beneath the low canopy of trees as you leave Webb Park and head down towards the beach. “Then, turning parallel to the beach, you’re suddenly immersed in nature, with the birds and the waves just about all you can hear.”

Tuesday 8 March, very seriously,” he said. “There’s definitely a changing of the guard in this industry. “In fact, more than 50% of our entire organistion is female. “And, the percentage of women riders has grown in the past decade, especially in the apprentice ranks. “The girls now out-rate the boys. “So much so, we’ll need to refurbish our jockeys’ rooms and double the size of the female area. “However, I’m not complaining. “It’s terrific to witness and I’m proud we’re adapting accordingly.” One local hoop making her mark on the racing scene is Amelia Denby, who boasts more than 70 wins in the saddle. “It’s so good to see so many women in a previously maledominated industry,” she said. “When you look throughout the history of racing, females are now starting to level out with the men – I think that’s terrific. “Women bring their own unique set of skills to the industry and it’s lovely to be part of it. “It’s definitely an even playing field out there these days. “Those at the top of racing, from Michelle Payne to Jamie Kah for example, have been a source of encouragement to all the rest of the female jockeys. “To see them compete with the men at the highest level is very inspirational.” And, Denby expects women’s participation in the sport will rise even further. “I think, a lot of the time, it’s predominantly girls who get into horses from a young age,” she said. “That’s through pony clubbing or as a hobby. “So, there’s many youngsters starting earlier than before. “That then leads them to look at, or consider, racing as a career.

“There are many pathways now, too. The way the industry’s progressing is allowing it to be more of an open door for everyone, but particularly females. “When I first began, it was a matter of who you knew or who was willing to teach you. “Whereas now, there’s real structure in place and trainers often chase you for rides. “There is an education system for apprentices, which is very helpful in getting women through the ranks.” Denby said she was excited by NJC’s enthusiasm to support IWD as well. “It’s such a good thing to celebrate,” she told the Newcastle Weekly. “There are a lot of incentives for women in the industry, not just working, but female owners and trainers, days at the races and things like that. “We have some wonderful mentors out there – they’re all inspirational. “It’s fantastic to be acknowledging their involvement at the Newcastle Jockey Club.” The International Women’s Day luncheon is one of the main social events on the NJC calendar. “In 2022, Newcastle journalist and NBN presenter Jane Goldsmith will emcee the function, with former Sky TV racing expert Lizzie Jelfs our special guest,” Dowell said. “The ladies can enjoy a chefinspired three-course meal trackside, accompanied by premium beverages including Moet and Chandon Imperial. “The luncheon usually raises $20,000 a year for local groups. “On this occasion, our charity partners are Got Your Back Sista and Equi Energy Youth.” For more information, go to newcastleracecourse.com.au - Rod Thompson

Frozen papaya spears Recipe by Healthy Little Foodies for Australian Papaya.

Fruity freezies For yummy ways to cool a crowd, try these frozen creations made from fresh Aussie fruit.

Pine-o-coco popsicle Recipe and image courtesy of Australian Pineapples. Serves 8 | Preparation 15 minutes, plus freezing time 4 cups chopped fresh pineapple

In a blender, puree all ingredients. Pour mixture into moulds and freeze for an hour (until they get ‘slushy’). Insert sticks and freeze for 7 hours until firm.

2/3 cup coconut milk 4 ½ Tbsp lime juice

Serves 16 | Preparation 20 minutes, plus freezing time 1 papaya 100g dark/milk chocolate 2 tsps coconut oil Crushed nuts/seeds/coconut to sprinkle Cut the papaya in half, lengthways. Using a spoon, scoop out the black seeds and discard. Cut each half in half again (length ways) and then again to produce 8 sections. Using a sharp knife, carefully cut the flesh away from the skin of each section. Discard the skin and cut each section in half (cross ways) to produce 16 large chunks. Skewer each section, with a stick, and place on a baking tray, making sure the papaya sections are not touching each other. Place in the freezer and freeze until solid (approx 3 hours).

Once the papaya skewers are completely frozen, melt your chocolate either using the microwave method or double boiler method and stir in the coconut oil until combined. Drizzle or dip your papaya into the chocolate and allow any excess chocolate to drip off. Sprinkle with crushed nuts/seeds/coconut and return to the freezer until you are ready to enjoy. Tips: Make sure the papaya is completely frozen before dipping in the chocolate. If the papaya is wet, the chocolate will slide off. The chocolate will instantly harden when you dip. Enjoy straight away or return to the freezer to enjoy later. Overheating chocolate can cause it to seize and it will have a dry, crumbly appearance. Avoid this by making sure you melt chocolate slowly using low heat, regardless what melting method you use.

Frozen banana popsicles Recipe courtesy of Australian Bananas. Serves 16 | Preparation 15 minutes, plus freezing time 4 large bananas 1 cup thick vanilla custard 2 cups vanilla ice-cream (about 350g) A few drops yellow food colouring, optional

Peel, chop and freeze the bananas in a storage container or snap lock bag for 3-4 hours until frozen. Place bananas in a food processor or blender. Process or blend until chopped. Add the custard and icecream and process until smooth and creamy. Add few drops yellow food colour if using, process to combine. Divide mixture evenly among 16 icepop moulds (50ml-capacity). Insert

sticks. Freeze 8 hours or overnight. Dip the moulds in a bowl of warm water for a couple of seconds to remove the banana pops. Place on a tray lined with baking paper. Freeze for 15 minutes. Serve.

done since we were teenagers. “So essentially it is a nostalgic trip for people and on top of that, it is a bonus for young people who come along because they’ll see stuff you don’t see anymore.” Rowe adds that he is excited to return to the region. Last February the trio played a show at the Civic Theatre in Newcastle to a crowd that “loved it”. Rowe, Dinah and Hurley say they are “so privileged and so lucky” to still be able to do what they love after rising to stardom in the ‘50s and ‘60s. With less than a dozen shows under their belts, Rowe is hopeful

they’ll be able to perform a lot more this year after COVID-19 wreaked havoc with their 2021 schedule. “To be quite frank, we could have been doing a lot more if it hadn’t been for COVID,” he said. “It was a big hit – I think we have lost maybe ten or twelve shows but I lost something like 35 in the first twelve months of COVID. “It’s not just me it impacts either when I work I have a band and

technical support and we do our own advertising so we’re all losing that income.” Moving forward, he hopes 2022 is a prosperous year for the industry. Exhibition explores future of landmark site A giant gin distillery, a circus venue and what might be the world’s weirdest dive centre are just three of the incredibly creative ideas being shown in a new exhibition that reimagines the heritage-listed Wangi Power Station site. Now on display at Wangi Library Creative Hub, the exhibit displays a visual collection of ideas from architecture students at the University of Newcastle. With a simple brief – design new ideas for the power station to make it an exciting place for our community – the students came up with some eccentric concepts to breathe new life into the site. One design uses the power station’s main building to house a circus while another would see it sealed and filled with water for unique scuba-diving experiences. “Sealing the building up and

turning it into a water tank for scuba diving is unlikely to ever happen, but seeing these concepts does help the imagination run wild about this site’s future,” Lake Macquarie City Council manager arts, culture and tourism Jacqui Hemsley said. “Designs presented by the students are thought-provoking and fascinating, and who knows – one day maybe we will see all or part of one of these ideas realised.” Associate Professor Sam Spurr said the students were “incredible” at creating images of future environments. “This is a great example of how design projects can fire the public imagination and hopefully mobilise saving such an important site from dereliction,” he said. The exhibition is open until 31 March.

Puppets, Aboriginal stories to illuminate Newcastle Carrington Parklands and Throsby Creek will be transformed into a giant outdoor theatre next month thanks to a very special collaboration. Curious Legends are joining forces with the Newcastle Worimi Community to create a show full of Aboriginal dancing, projections and their signature illuminated puppetry. Artistic director Mitchell Reese says it started from wanting to “create something really special”. “Over a year in the making, think outdoor performance with breathtaking Aboriginal dancing and ancient stories,” he said. “In our studio we’re currently

building an eight-metre-long Stingray, and a three-metre wide Mudcrab for the show – we can’t wait to share them with you.” Commissioned by City of Newcastle for the New Annual Festival, Gimbay Gatigaan (meaning Friendly Mudcrab in language) explores Throsby Creek through an Aboriginal lens – that of the Dates mob, whose ancestors have walked this land since forever. The show was originally planned for October last year, but COVID-19 forced the production to be rescheduled. “COVID has pushed everything

back but, fortunately, Newcastle council decided this story must be told, and has been working with us behind the scenes to make it a success,” Reese said. He encourages everyone to come along to one of the shows for an evening under the stars that offers an opportunity to see this land in a new way. Food trucks and a traditional smoking ceremony will also feature at the event. It’ll be performed across three nights from Thursday 3 March until Saturday 5 March. Entry is free, it will run from 6.30pm to 9pm.

Now’s the time to enter Varley Rural Achiever award Is the Hunter Valley’s next pastoral ambassador in your community? If the answer is “yes”, then make sure they enter the 2022 Varley Rural Achiever award, just like Laura Main did last year. The St Philip’s Christian College Cessnock staff member impressed the judges to claim the 2021 crown. Now, the Greater Bank Newcastle Show (The Show) is searching for its 2022 Rural Achiever participants when the much-loved extravaganza celebrates its 120th anniversary at

the Newcastle Showground on 4, 5 and 6 March. “Applications are currently open for judging,” general manager Emma Spencer said. “We aim to identify young achievers, presently aged between 20 and 29, whose past and present contributions to rural and regional communities distinguish them as the outstanding and inspiring leaders of the future. “Finalists will have the opportunity to secure a cash prize, participate in a short course at Tocal Agricultural College, an internship with Varley, network

with primary producers, industry leaders and organisations, working behind the scenes at the largest rural agricultural event in NSW and gain valuable leadership skills along the way.” The Rural Achiever award endorses rural advocacy and provides potential young leaders with a platform for enhanced professional growth and to inspire ambition for others to follow. The 2022 winner will be announced during The Show’s official opening, which will hold them in good stead to apply for the Sydney Royal Easter Show Rural

Achiever program. For more information, or to enter, visit the website. -Rod Thompson

February is the best time for a summer prune February is the ideal month to give roses a summer prune, which will prolong flowering through the cooler months. Roses in pots, after pruning, should be fed with a slow-release fertiliser such as Sudden Impact. Those ground grown should be pruned, about one third of the growth, and fed with poultry manure, followed by rose food in a couple of weeks. Prune hydrangeas now by cutting to two plump buds, removing old and spindly wood at the base of the plant, then fertilise. This feeding process should be governed by maintaining existing colour – white doesn’t change, whereas other colours respond to acidity or alkalinity. Tomato lovers will have noticed fruit fly attacking, too. They leave their eggs behind, which result in grubs being present on the inside when cut. There are no longer systemic sprays available to the home gardener but, trust me, commercial growers still have access to such products – all we

Now in le t Newcas

home gardeners can do is try baiting the fruit fly. The most important job you can do is to not allow infected fruit to rot on the ground as next year the fruit fly will be uncontrollable. I had a customer in at the weekend with samples of an azalea hedge totally covered in red spiders. Thankfully, I was able to offer him a fairly recent addition to my “chemist” shop – it’s is a systemic shaker, which is watered, not sprayed. Also, I took my dog Arthur for a short walk today. He is a Boston Terrier and, like his mum, he gets short of breath quickly. But, even on a short walk, I couldn’t believe the number of agapanthus bordering driveways that had long heads still clinging to plants. They should be cut down at the base of the clump before they scatter seed throughout the garden. If you wish to cultivate new plants, leave some seed heads to ripen and, when they are dry, tie a paper bag over the head, save the dry seed and they will grow readily. Note to Emma, hair stylist, I meant to tell you

this last week, plants for free to establish in your new garden. I hope you have noticed the beautiful Crepe Myrtles in flower. They are great for small gardens and can be pruned back in winter to produce a compact plant.

This week • The heavy storms could be causing damage in the garden – throw dolomite around roses and lime on the lawns. • Native plants, particularly Geraldton Wax and Grevilleas, can be subject to root rot when their feet are wet. • We are on the slide down to autumn – hence many annual plants and herbs may not be available. If pansies appear, wait until the middle of March.

Style your study space It’s back-to-school and work season again and creating the perfect home office zone is crucial to flourishing within a pandemic world. Start the year on the right foot with Early Settler’s top tips to re-vamp your workspace. Create a dedicated space

2

If you happen to have a spare room or a bungalow in your home, you’re in luck. An at-home office setup works best if you’ve got a whole room to dedicate it too. But don’t fret if that’s not an option, the next best idea is to get inventive and find a cosy niche, like underneath a quiet staircase, a corner of the bedroom, a converted linen cupboard or even the landing at the top of your stairs.

A decent desk

Height, surface space, material, and size – there’s so much more to finding the right desk for you than just somewhere to put your laptop! According to Early Settler, the right desk should be approximately 75-78cm to prevent neck and back pain, along with being able to rest your arms. The recommended surface space sits between 120-150cm.

3

A comfy chair

Late afternoon backaches and constant shoulder tension is often caused by a poor choice of chair. Height-adjustable chairs are well worth investing in to ensure comfort and finding the perfect stature for your form. Caster wheels are an added bonus, allowing you to glide in and out of your desk with ease. Find more tips at earlysettlerblog.com

Hunter housing industry continuing to build The Hunter housing industry is showing no signs of slowing, against all apparent odds. Despite the impact of the global pandemic and the wrapping up

Housing Industry Association’s Craig Jennion.

of the HomeBuilder stimulus, the number of new home builds given the go-ahead has continued to rise. According to the latest ABS figures, building approvals for detached homes, multi-unit and renovations and alterations, all showed strong growth in 2021. In fact, building a detached dwelling, or stand-alone home, continues to drive home buyers, despite economic uncertainty. Housing Industry Association (HIA) Hunter executive director Craig Jennion says 65.2% of all approvals in the Hunter over the past 12 months were for detached dwellings. “In 2021 detached dwelling approvals increased 13% in the Hunter and 45% on the Central Coast compared to the 2020

Despite the impact of the global pandemic, the number of new home builds continues to rise in the Hunter.

calendar year,” he said. Multi-unit approvals in the Hunter also increased during the same period, up 39%. In total 5,760 approvals were issued for new dwellings across the Hunter region during 2021, an increase of 21% from the previous year. The boost came at a time when the federal government was offering those willing to enter into a contract between 4 June 2020 and 31 December 2020, a $25,000 grant to build a new home, substantially renovate an existing home, or buy an off the plan home/new home. This was followed by a $15,000 grant for those willing to sign off on a build, to buy or renovate a home, between 1 January 2021 and 31 March 2021. The structure was not the only drawcard for the industry, with residential land in the Lower Hunter continuing to attract new homeowners, as seen in the number of approvals continuing to soar. “Much of the heavy lifting for the residential sector continues to occur on the Central Coast and in the Lower Hunter, with the local government areas of Central Coast, Lake Macquarie,

Maitland and Newcastle continuing to be the top locations for approvals, accounting for 73.68% of total approvals,” Mr Jennion explained. Outlying areas also rated a mention. “Regionally Cessnock LGA was again a big mover with total housing approvals increasing by 30%, detached dwelling increasing 23%, while multi-unit approvals increased by 123%.” For those content to remain at their current address, home improvements became the focus during the past 12 months, with the number of approved major renovations and alterations surging by 26%. And the future of housing continues to appear positive. “Looking ahead, we are forecasting residential building activity to remain strong as households remain very active in the market,” Mr Jennion added. “This is evidenced by the strong housing finance data, current low interest rates, rising house prices and strong employment conditions. “Together this should ensure the demand for new homes remains solid.” - Rebecca Riddle

Newcastle records slight increase in rental vacancies The NSW Real Estate Institute’s (REINSW) Vacancy Rate Survey results for December 2021, show that residential rental vacancies have remained mostly stable across much of the state. “While there have been some slight movements up and down, for the most part these have only been slight,” CEO Tim McKibbin said. 20

newcastleweekly.com.au

“Decreasing by 0.2% for the month, the vacancy rate for Sydney overall is now 2.8%. This slight drop is attributable to fewer vacancies in Sydney’s Inner Ring, which now has a rate of 3.7%. Both the Middle and Outer Rings remained stable at 2.9% and 1.8% respectively.” Outside Sydney, vacancies

increased by 0.1% in Newcastle to be 2.1%. Wollongong also increased by 0.1%, coming in at 0.8%. Vacancy rates across regional NSW continue to remain low, recording only small movements. “Rates in the Central Coast, New England, Northern Rivers, Orana and South Coast areas

all experienced a slight uptick in the availability of rental accommodation in December 2021, while the Albury, Coffs Harbour, Mid-North Coast and South Eastern areas saw decreases,” Mr McKibbin said. “The Central West, Murrumbidgee and Riverina areas remained stable.”

Hunter homes are continuing to increase in value The Hunter is continuing to lure big city buyers, pushing local housing values to unprecedented levels and drastically reducing selling times, but how long the trend will continue is questionable? According to CoreLogic’s quarterly Regional Market Update, released on 14 February, Australia’s 25 largest noncapital city regions are continuing to increase in value. Over the 12 months to January 2022, 24 regions recorded double-digit annual growth for houses, with 18 of them experiencing gains in excess of 20%. Flexible working conditions, more space and better affordability are being touted as the bait to draw homebuyers to Australia’s regional areas, fuelling a surge in property values. The combined median dwelling value in regional areas jumped 26.1% in the year to January 2022, outpacing the

32

newcastleweekly.com.au

combined capital city dwelling growth rate of 21.3% for the same period. CoreLogic’s head of research Eliza Owen says the question now is whether the trend will continue. “Timing any shift in the housing market can be very difficult,” she said. “Generally, a downswing in property values is fairly broad based across both capital cities and regions and it’s common for the two markets to roughly perform in line with each other. “Through the 2010s for example, there appeared to be a lead-lag relationship between capital city and regional housing market performance by three to six months. “Through the current cycle, capital city markets hit their peak growth rates in April 2021, so if we were to assume the long-term property cycle relationship still holds, regional

dwelling market growth rates would have started to slow in late 2021.” By the end of 2021 there was a change in pattern Ms Owen says, with post-lockdown easing of restrictions accelerating price growth in regional areas, creating a pattern she describes as “an unusual divergence between the two markets”. Yet, she expects growth rates in regional Australia to start slowing early this year. “Positive interstate migration trends may have acted as a tailwind for these popular lifestyle regions, even amid affordability challenges and fixed rates starting to move higher,” she said. “This may reflect the postlockdown conditions following suppressed migration and housing transaction activity across Sydney,

Melbourne and the ACT in the three months to September. “Regional areas previously benefited from the easing of social distancing restrictions, which boosted buyer interest and a surge in interstate migration, and that may have continued in the final months of 2021 and into the new year.” Higher interest rates and affordability constraints are not limited to capital cities however. “Regions have an additional factor to contend with and that is the possibility of a return to ‘normality’ and what that means for a potential refocus on cities,” Ms Owen said. “Employers may make a return to physical office space a priority, which would necessitate buyers to reconsider housing options closer to a capital city.”

OUR DOG DIESEL Our German Shepherd is our fur baby. He spends his time on our bed. He lets us kiss his face and is always so excited to see us even if we have been gone 5 minutes. He makes even the worst days better.

SMIRNOFF SUGAR FREE DOUBLE BLACKS Our favourite drink. It’s sugar free so is guilt free drinking. We love cracking open a drink dancing around the house cranking our favourite tunes then kicking back watching all our reality trash TV.

REALITY TV

Our favourite things

Tim and Rod LGBTQIA+ champions and winners of The Amazing Race Tim and Rod Sattler-Jones became some of the most-loved faces on Aussie television in 2019 during Network Ten’s The Amazing Race. Taking out the grand prize of $250,000 the pair credited teamwork and determination for their success not only on the show but in life. As the first gay married couple on TV, the duo loved inspiring and empowering the LGBTIQA+ community but also relished the opportunity to normalise the appearance of queer people in prime time. Aside from television, the pair have recently published a book, The Greatest Feeling in The World, and launched podcast The Real Househusbands which celebrates their guilty pleasure: reality TV. Episodes will see the guys overshare on their real life, should have been on reality TV moments. Rolling out celebrity guests, Tim and Rod will get to the bottom of the iconic scenes they loved while exposing how real life can be so much more dramatic than reality television. Follow their antics on Instagram @timandrod

We are reality TV junkies. It helps us escape from the stress of our own lives by watching how funny and tragic other people’s lives are. The trashier the better. Our favourite shows ever are Ru Paul’s Drag Race and the Housewives franchise.

TRAVEL Obviously, we won The Amazing Race Australia which is all travel and adventure, but we are obsessed with experiencing our own country and various cultures from all over the world. We are the happiest when we are jet-setting across the globe.

SUMMER AND THE BEACH If the sun is out, we are at the beach or in the water somewhere. The ideal year for us is just chasing summer all the way around the globe. Our favourite holidays have been the Whitsundays and the Maldives which are the definition of a summer location and just spectacular. newcastleweekly.com.au
