COVID-19 has been a dirty word over the past two years.

But, a silver lining to the pandemic has been the commitment of our health care workers. And, it seems timely that the man who became the trusted face of the Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) during that period, Dr David Durrheim, was awarded the Lake Mac Ambassador for 2022 at a gala event on Saturday night. His outstanding efforts also kept the community safe, due to his levelheaded advice, consistent messaging and heartfelt pleas for residents to take precautions. Lake Macquarie City mayor Kay Fraser even labelled him “a true pillar of our community and an inspiration for us all”. It’s hard to argue with that sentiment. Dr Durrheim was available to the media, day and night, even on weekends, to ensure everyone in the HNELHD remained ahead of the game. Selflessly, he praised others for not only listening to his guidance but tackling the challenge head-on in a difficult time.

Dog owners urged to be vigilant after pup contracts leptospirosis After a 16-week-old puppy contracted a rare disease late last month, Cardiff Veterinary Hospital vet Dr Andrew Cornwell is asking dog owners in the Speers Point area to be vigilant. It’s the first case of leptospirosis in the region for decades and while it is very rare it can be life-threatening. The bacterial disease can affect animals and humans, symptoms in dogs can include lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, jaundice, and changes to kidney and liver blood enzyme levels. Dr Cornwell said after some tests they sent the sick pup, Storm, to Sydney for specialist treatment. “Last month a 16-week-old

Swiss Shepherd pup presented with vomiting and diarrhea, we ran some blood tests at the time which returned some quite unusual readings and raised the alarm bells that it could potentially be a leptospirosis case,” he said. “We then sent some bloods externally to Laverty to have it tested specifically for leptospirosis and it came back positive, so subsequently the little dog has been transferred down to Sash in Sydney where it is having specialist treatment.” When it came to how Storm caught the disease, Dr Cornwell believed it was from drinking out of a puddle near the family’s house.

“We think it’s contracted it from drinking out of a puddle or playing in a puddle either next door to the house or in the backyard,” he said. He believes there are rats in the area harbouring the infection. If you live within the Speers Point area Dr Cornwall says there’s a few things you can do to protect your pet. “Firstly I would advise getting a lepto vaccine for your dog,” he said. “But, there are other things that you can do too, just common sense

things – don’t let them drink out of puddles, don’t let them go playing in stagnant water because you can get it through cuts and abrasions.” Despite having the potential to be fatal, he wants owners to know the single case is “no cause for major alarm”. “If you are outside of a threekilometre radius of that area you don’t need to be concerned,” he said. “People just need to be aware and be vigilant.” – Elizabeth Symington

Hotelier Glenn Piper acquires iconic Beach Hotel at Merewether Hotelier Glenn Piper has acquired Newcastle’s iconic Merewether Beach Hotel, an expansive multi-level corner pub that sits on an 1850-sqm site. A local institution for more than a century, the premises is located a stone’s throw away from the shoreline and has uninterrupted, panoramic views of the ocean. Piper has partnered with a small syndicate of investors, many of whom are Novocastrians, on the purchase and is committed to revitalising “The Beaches” with the community and Australian surf culture firmly at its heart. “Merewether Beach Hotel is a truly magnificent property, with

one of the best pub views in the country,” Mr Piper said. “It’s been part of the community since the 1880s, so I feel humbled and excited by this once-in-alifetime opportunity to take it on. “I have spent a lot of time in the area over the years. “As a kid, I would always travel up on the weekend to surf with my dad and mates at Merewether. “My family who lives in Newcastle were actually the ones who told me the pub was on the market. “They will be coming on board as investors, which makes the sale even more special.” Mr Piper, who boasts an

esteemed career in property, is passionate about creating vibrant destinations that respect the history of the area and celebrate the community that call it home. His recent transformation of Harbord Hotel took its cues from Freshwater’s history, creating a true beachside haven informed by the surf culture that has long been embedded in its name. “Both pubs share a wonderful affinity with the surf - the salty sea air is part of their DNA,” Mr

Piper said. “That’s exactly what we wanted to capture at Harbord and certainly what we’ll celebrate at Merewether, the home of Australia’s largest surf carnival.” Mr Piper also recently took on the leasehold of Q Station, which sits on 30 hectares on the headland on Sydney’s northern beaches. He’ll receive the keys to the Merewether Beach Hotel in July. It will trade as normal for the foreseeable future.

Junk insurance refund a timely windfall for Melissa Beresfield resident Melissa Dark is thanking her lucky stars after a junk insurance refund has left her thousands of dollars richer. She is in fact one of more than six million Australians owed a share of billions of dollars after the big banks unnecessarily charged their clients insurance fees. According to insurance refund group, Claimo, Ms Dark was, like most, unaware that she had even been charged the feees, let alone due a refund. Claimo director Nathan Mortlock says his Sydney-based firm has already claimed more than $10 million in refunds for 3,000 Australians. “If you’ve ever had a credit card, taken out a loan or obtained

finance to buy a car, you’re likely to have unknowingly paid for junk insurance and eligible for a refund,” he says. “Shockingly, one in three Australians have policies that are often worth less than the paper they’re printed on.” Mr Mortlock says there is a $10 billion refund pool set aside by the big banks to reimburse victims of junk insurance policies. “We want every Australian to check their personal, home, car and credit card statements,” he told the Newcastle Weekly. “It could be worth a lot of money, and at a time when everyday costs are spiralling, these junk insurance refunds could prove to be a financial lifeline for some families.”

Beresfield woman Melissa Dark has been refunded thousands of dollars from junk insurance.

The average Claimo refund is $3,700, with one client achieving a $70,000 refund and a $90,000 claim currently pending. For Ms Dark it was a shock to learn she was owed money as a result of personal loans accrued between 2003 and 2014. “I was simply stunned. The first thing I did with the money was pay off debt,” she said. “In fact, the money I got back from the junk insurance on the

credit card, I used to pay off that card. No more loans and no more junk insurance.” Reading the fine print and understanding what it means is something Ms Dark says she insists on before signing any document now. “I think that’s where they got me. I was trusting these loans were the right choice, but I certainly learned differently,” she said. - Rebecca Riddle

Cessnock inmates build homes for floodaffected communities Inmates at Cessnock Correctional Centre have jumped at the chance to help flood-affected communities on the Northern Rivers. They’ve turned “demountables” into impressive single moduledesigned homes – complete with double bed, kitchen, bathroom and laundry – to provide urgent relief accommodation. The units, constructed through Corrective Services Industries (CSI) at Cessnock and Goulburn, will be sent to temporary housing sites in the Lismore area and beyond. And, the first of 40, left the Hunter Valley last week. The dwellings were allocated

to CSI, from the Department of Education, before being stripped and overhauled to house up to two people. Up to 90 inmates spent the past couple of weeks not only building the homes but refitting them and removing asbestos to ensure they were compliant. The final result was truly remarkable and a credit to everyone involved in the process, despite the extended working hours needed to complete the task. NSW Minister for Corrections Geoff Lee said the project offered vital support for flood victims while also aligning with the NSW government’s goal to reduce

recidivism. “It’s great that Corrective Services can assist the people of the Northern Rivers and, at the same time, enable inmates to upskill in a range of trades,” he stated. “This project is also a testament to our staff, who are dedicated to the security of our state and the rehabilitation of offenders.” The new units are part of a $350 million investment by the NSW Government into temporary housing for flood-affected communities.

“Housing is one of the biggest challenges facing our flood-affected communities,” Mr Lee stated. “The NSW Government is looking at all available options to provide people with a roof over their heads as the recovery progresses. “Programs like this are key to providing the temporary accommodation needed so floodaffected residents can get on with the enormous task of rebuilding as quickly as possible.” – Rod Thompson

Newcastle Repair Café to help Novocastrians live more sustainably What do you do when something is broken? If your answer to that question is “throw it out”, a new initiative from Newcastle Libraries is perfect for you. In a bid to help create less waste, the organisation has launched the Newcastle Repair Café to teach people new skills to fix broken items rather than throw them away. Supported by the Newcastle Toy Library, Upcycle Newcastle and local repairers, the café will be open at Lambton Library on the last Saturday of each month until June. Ward 3 Councillor Margaret Wood said a visit to Newcastle Repair Café was a great way to renew

unused household items, with the potential for people to also learn new skills. “The aim of the repair café is to teach sustainable living skills to our local community through the repair and re-use of old household items, and best of all is that the events are free to attend,” Cr Wood said. “The Newcastle Repair Cafe is a place where people with items that are in need of repairs can meet skilled repairers to breathe new life into their old items and have the opportunity to learn new skills to use for future repairs.” The first of four Newcastle Repair Café events at Lambton

Bicycle repairer Nick Grinpukel, Councillor Margaret Wood and City of Newcastle Library partnerships facilitator Christina Robberds at Lambton Library.

Library planned for 2022 was in March, which focused on clothing, small hand tools and bikes. The next repair café on Saturday 28 May will offer repairs for textiles and clothing. Another event will be hosted in June for furniture, small hand tools, clothing and toys. That will also feature a plant and seed swap to promote the benefits of growing your own produce. Newcastle Libraries will also begin weighing items presented to the Repair Café, in order to track the volume of items that would

have otherwise been disposed of in landfill. Repair cafés originated in Europe and have since become popular throughout Australia. The Newcastle Libraries initiative is the only free repair café currently offered in the Newcastle LGA. Bookings are not required for Newcastle Repair Café sessions. Lifting the Bar (TV) on local community sport A love of community sport has certainly paid dividends for Josh Mason and his Newcastle-based broadcasting entity, BarTV Sports. In fact, the media and production company, which specialises in live-streaming events – from rugby league to AFL and much more in between – is now an Australian phenomenon with sights set on global domination, too. In just under a decade, the venture boasts thousands of subscribers throughout the country, as well as partnerships with the likes of Fox Sports, Kayo, Cricket Australia, Football Federation Australia, SANFL, NEAFL, NSW Netball, NSW Waratahs, Brumbies

Rugby, QLD Touch Football and AFL Europe. It’s hard to believe it all started back in 2013, via a Newcastle Rugby League (Real NRL) showdown. “We did our first match then,” Mason said. “Myself, Mark Priest and Brendan McCormick – my business partners who are still with me, along with Liam and Melissa Beckett. “We’re all local guys. “Believe it or not, Brendan, Liam and I all went to school together at St Francis Xavier’s College. “However, we saw a niche market to broadcast community sport into pubs and clubs.

The founder of Newcastle-based BarTV Sports, Josh Mason, is proud of how far the company’s progressed in such a short time. Photo: Peter Stoop

“It started as BarTV Bars – but it’s grown a little bit since then,” he added with a laugh. Mason recalled the historic maiden fixture, which began the journey. “I think it was between Kurri Kurri and Port Stephens,” he said. “Back then, we used to get it [the game] on a DVD. “Brendan and I taught ourselves how to edit it; we’d get it off a disc, put a scoreboard on it and play it. “The first pub to televise the match was in Kurri Kurri. “We went down on a Thursday night, after training, and the boys came in and watched in on the TV. “The reaction [to it] was pretty fantastic; there was a bit of a buzz. “The vision back then looks totally different to what it is today. “But, the appetite was there. “We’ve now developed cutting-edge graphics and videohighlighting technology. “That provides instantaneous analysis for coaches or exposure for your competition through immediate, hassle-free social media video publication. “We produce a lot of content under our own banner, such as from Gympie in Queensland to Ulladulla, which is our rugby league territory. “We’re also very active in the ACT, South Australia and Western Australia.

“Then, we undertake material not under BarTV Sports, too, for broadcasters like Cricket Australia. “It certainly keeps everyone busy. “For example, through the thick of winter, we’re probably producing 300 games per weekend. “That’s in excess of 3,000 matches for the four main sports throughout their respective seasons.” Mason admitted the “rise and rise” of BarTV Sports caught them slightly off-guard. “I think live-streaming was always going to be a big thing – and, especially sport,” he said. “For us, we really built it around that. “Logistically, we could see fixtures for 20 weeks [at a time] and put a plan in place, rather than doing more creative aspects. “However, we always felt that connection with community sport, with the sponsors, and then friends, family and fans. “So, in that respect, it’s grown a lot faster than we thought. “And, the hunger now is from every age group up to seniors. “It’s at that stage where it’s expected. “It is ‘where can I watch this?’, even an under-6’s encounter, not ‘if I can watch it?” – Rod Thompson

Nords Wharf couple Ken and Joyce Crouchman are celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary. Photo: Peter Stoop

Lake Macquarie pair mark 70 years of love Ken and Joyce Crouchman’s family had a few surprises in store for their 70th wedding anniversary celebrations, including something from their beloved Newcastle Knights. The Nords Wharf pair, who hit the marriage milestone on 3 May, actually began celebrating a lifetime of togetherness early. Special dinners, a Nelson Bay getaway and an afternoon tea have all featured in a month-long itinerary designed to acknowledge a marriage they say is based on laughter. “We never go out in a car, or to bed angry,” Joyce says. “We always kiss goodnight and always laugh with one another.” In fact, son Corey, who lives in a granny flat on the couple’s property, says the duo laugh so much that they make their dogs start barking at all times of the day or night. Not much has changed since Ken and Joyce met as teenagers in 1948 at a local dance in Essex, UK. Then aged 15 and 16, it was a cheeky line from Ken during a bus ride home from a dance that they first connected. “I told her I had a sister and that my sister would like to know what lipstick she had on and could I try it on,” laughs Ken.

“I can still remember saying that. “I don’t have a sister by the way.” Obviously his charm worked its magic on Joyce because four years later, the loved-up couple were married in a simple ceremony at a church in Cherry Tree. “Ken had enlisted in the Air Force and we decided to tie the knot before he was sent away to serve,” Joyce says. The date was 3 May 1952. Dressed in smart suits, wearing simple floral arrangements and with Joyce carrying a horseshoe good luck charm, the pair said their “I dos” before family and friends. “It was a simple wedding,” Joyce told the Newcastle Weekly. “No one had much money back then.” Ken left soon after to work as an aerial photographer with the RAF, a role he would perform for another year, while Joyce gave birth to their first child Leslie. It was this skill that caught the eye of then editor Ita Buttrose, who arranged for Ken and his new young family to immigrate to Australia under the employ of the Australian Women’s Weekly. After years of Sydney life, it was Nords Wharf that became home some 35 years ago. - Rebecca Riddle

REGIS AGED CARE Aged care residents from Regis Port Stephens were invited to the release of Elvis the green sea turtle back into the wild. The group was given a wonderful briefing about what had happened to Elvis and a narrative about his recovery. Shortly after being placed on the sand at Fly Point, Elvis headed off into the bay to start his next chapter back in the wild. The residents relish being involved in community projects and were elated to be part of this momentous occasion. Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea to return this month

Australia's Biggest Morning Tea was launched during a media event at The Greenroof in Hamilton last week.

It’s time to “bake up a storm” and support Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea. That’s the message from Hunter Cancer Council’s community relations coordinator Danielle Foster as the organisation counts down the days to the 19 May event. “We’re very excited for the community to get back into Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea,” she said. “The official day is on 19 May but anyone can register, it’s biggestmorningtea.com.au “You can do it in May and June and we’re so excited for the Hunter to get baking with their community groups, colleagues and their families it is going to be excellent.” The annual event raises funds for the charity’s vital work including its life-saving research, prevention, support programs and information. It calls on people throughout the country to host a morning tea, collect donations and create awareness of the Cancer Council and the impact cancer can have on someone’s life. This year, Danielle says the team is excited to see people back together after COVID-19 changed the way the event worked over the past two years. “Now, we can bake up a storm together... again,” she said. “It’s going to be great across the Hunter and we want to see everyone get involved and obviously we are stoked with our ambassador – Reece Hignell from Cakeboi.”

Reece says he didn’t think twice about supporting the initiative. “I got involved because, like myself, a lot of people all over the world are affected by cancer so when they first approached me I was keen straight away,” he said. “I think for me, anything in terms of awareness-raising and how you can give back is really important. “I’m very willing to give back but I am not necessarily always aware of how to, so if we can raise awareness by having a cup of coffee with your neighbour or at work and collect a few dollars, it goes a long way.”

The former MasterChef contestant says the best cake to have with tea or coffee is a tea cake. Out of his range of cakes – that will be for sale on 19 May – he suggests the Persian Love Cake “because it is not too sweet, it’s a little spicy and really crunchy and with a cup of tea of coffee it will go really well”. For more information or to sign up to host a Biggest Morning Tea, visit biggestmorningtea.com.au or call 1300 65 65 85. – Elizabeth Symington

Bounty Hunters rocking it out for Roady4Roadies event at Lizotte’s Guitar virtuoso David Hinds can’t wait to take to the stage at Lizotte’s this weekend. Like most musicians, he and wife Lyn, who front the Newcastle-based Bounty Hunters Band, have yearned for the return of “live” performances after their COVID-19 enforced hiatus. So, when the invitation arrived to perform for Roady4Roadies on Saturday 7 May, he was quick to accept. “The past two years have been extremely tough on the entertainment industry,” Hinds said. “All of our gigs just disappeared overnight. “However, Lyn and I put the downtime to good use and concentrated on our songwriting. “So, we’ll be recording the next Bounty Hunters Band album later this year. But, for now, it feels amazing to be playing ‘live’ shows again and interacting personally with our fans and friends. “We really missed that during lockdown.” Bounty Hunters Band will join emcee Ross (Fergy) Ferguson, finalists from The Voice

– Generations Ty and Eddie, new local outfit The Chris Cornell Concept and 10-year-old Central Coast prodigy LilG to support the more than 22,000 road crew members who have virtually gone without work since early 2020. Many of them were forced to leave the industry they love, while others are still doing it tough. “Roady4Roadies is extremely important to us because all proceeds go to CrewCare, which is an organisation who provides support to road crew members who have fallen on hard times financially or have medical issues,” Hinds said. “These men and women are the unsung heroes and backbone of the ‘live’ music industry. “Without them, the show does not go on. “For them, as well as the musicians, the past two years has meant no performances. “So, all of the artists playing at the Roady4Roadies events have donated their time. “The Lizotte’s gig in Newcastle will be very special, as it’s hosted by the legendary

David and Lyn Hinds, from Bounty Hunters Band, are ready to rock out at Lizotte's for this weekend's Roady4Roadies event.

Ross ‘Fergy’ Ferguson, who has worked for INXS, Little River Band, Tina Turner and Elton John, to name just a few. “We (Bounty Hunters Band) are looking forward to being part of this great occasion.” Roady4Roadies kicks off with a leisurely, neighbourhood walk followed by activities and entertainment. Everyone’s invited to gather from about 10.30am at Newcastle’s Lambton Park for an 11am start.

Wand-erful production to open at Civic Playhouse Fast-paced fun and Sirius-ly funny. That’s how Nick “Ducko” Allen-Ducat describes his new show Puffs. Opening at the Civic Playhouse on Friday, he says the play is perfect for any Harry Potter fan. It follows the lives of three young wizards and their friends during seven eventful years at a certain school of magic. “It’s essentially a complete parody from the world that is Harry Potter,” Ducko said. “So, it’s based on the Puff house which is the nice guys of the school; the nice guys and girls who are maybe not the coolest or the most sociable and are a bit oddball. “It also focuses on their years going through a certain school of witchcraft and wizardry the same years as a certain trio that everyone knows, and everyone fell in love with. “So, it’s from the other peoples’ perspective and how they feel about it all and what their take on it was.” Ducko is “super excited” for the audience to see his take on Cedric and Mr Voldy.

As one of 11 cast members, Ducko says most of the actors play multiple characters, with some taking on 11 roles in the 90-minute production. “It requires everyone to be really on their toes,” he said. “People who really love [Harry Potter] – and there are lots out there – will thoroughly enjoy the intricate jokes and the pace and the wittiness of this show.” Ducko encourages everyone to see the production – it’s been performed all around the world capturing the hearts of many. “If you don’t have tickets, get tickets because they are selling fast and rightly so,” he said. “You won’t be disappointed, for anyone who likes Harry Potter or even if you’ve just seen a handful of the movies, you’ll really get something out of this. “If you want to escape the everyday mundane world and the negative things that are going on lose yourself for 90-ish minutes in this play and sit back and have a laugh because it is well worth it.” Go to verypopulartheatreco.com.au/puffs for

Runway to home Queen of the red carpet, Miley Cyrus, has been strutting her stuff on stage and off for over a decade and leaving trend after trend in her wake. This week, NW has transformed the pop-star’s top looks into a fit-for-a-celeb home makeover, Miley-style.

A sleek, black dress with flashy details is the epitome of Hollywood glamour and will never go out of style. To bring the glitz into your bedroom, try a smooth black sideboard with your bling sitting in a crystal trinket box on top.

Bad and boujee in Balenciaga, Miley absolutely rocks this floral suit with matching purse. We all love a bit of matchy-matchy when the moment’s right, so we’ve paired a subtle floral print bedding set with a bright and bold ‘70s style throw cushion.

in the garden

May’s a good time to plant out new trees and shrubs It’s amazing to think we are beginning the last month of autumn as well as celebrating Mother’s Day this Sunday for which there are many plants available including cyclamen, Chrissies, Cymbidium Orchids and Anthuriums. All of them provide great colour inside for winter. Weather drives our garden interest, although during this autumn the amount of rain we’ve had will have leached out many elements from the soil. Camellias and gardenias would respond to an application of chelated iron and an application of peat moss around the root’s surface. Roses and, indeed, most garden beds will need a handful of Dolomite spread around. Lawns, unfortunately, are still being decimated by army grub. Apart from being treated each 10 days for this pest, which is eating the roots, apply Seasol to stimulate root growth and throw lime around to sweeten the soil.

May is a good time to plant out new trees and shrubs, particularly this year as the ground is so moist. There is still growing time for new plants to settle in, so establish some root growth and become acclimatised. When spring does arrive, it can sometimes be quite hot and plants bedded now won’t suffer the same stress needing constant watering. Citrus and magnolia “Teddy Bears” are good choices for autumn planting, remembering that citrus prefer alkaline soil, whereas as magnolias need acidic soil. Japonica camellias may require disbudding now to encourage better blooms. This simply means removing one or two buds from a group that are too prolific. Don’t fertilise camellias until they fi nish blooming - bedded plants need cow manure, whereas potted specimens should be fertilised with Bounceback. Before the colder days arrive, divide

IN THE GARDEN JUDY SHARPE

strawberries by planting new runners or plant into beds prepared with cow manure. It’s also a great time to divide agapanthus and Olivia - fertilise with Bounceback after replanting to encourage new growth before winter. New season roses can be tempting, but I wouldn’t recommend planting before June. Defi nitely don’t plant in newly-fertilised soil. Beds should be prepared with well-rotted compost and soil conditioner. Roses enjoy a slightly alkaline soil, which can be achieved if your soil is acidic. Roses dug before June can suffer from dieback which is difficult to control. During autumn, winter grass can appear as pretty green tufts - products for elimination should be applied now before it seeds.

The 22-year-old carpenter was recognised for his outstanding skill set and potential in the industry at the 2022 HIA-CSR Australian Housing Awards held last weekend. In front of an audience of industry leaders and homebuilding consumers, the Belmont man was announced the 2022 HIA Jim Brookes Australian Apprentice winner, an honour he says represents a great opportunity. “I was so pleased to just be a finalist and it’s a fantastic honour to be recognised in this way,” he said. “Entering the award was a great opportunity to show off my skills and what I have learnt from my 40

employer as well as colleagues past and present.” Brayden has been hosted by PB Quality Constructions since the start of his carpentry apprenticeship in 2017. During that time he has been described by colleagues as a forward-thinker who loves a challenge and is an effective leader. By all accounts he takes pride in a high standard of workmanship in his tasks. Brayden’s eagerness and motivation was praised by the judges and HIA Hunter Executive Director Craig Jennion who congratulated the Hunter finalist for his ability to clearly articulate his achievements and industry goals. “His communication skills, work ethic, and attitude make him a true asset to PB Quality Constructions,” Mr Jennion said.

A high achiever in school, Brayden has continued his commitment to learning by taking on supervisory roles, completing his Certificate IV in Building and Construction, and gaining his Bachelor of Construction Management at university. For Brayden the most rewarding aspect about working in the residential construction sector is its constant evolution. “I really enjoy how the industry is constantly evolving,” he said. “In particular developing new solutions to how we build to make homes more efficient and longer lasting, as well as suggesting alternative products to save on cost.” And while he’s enjoying the learning, he already has clear aspirations for the future. “In the coming years I’d like

to stay with my employer and continue to supervise, estimate and learn new skills,” he says. “After that I would like to consider opening my own business and expanding into commercial work using my degree in construction management.” The HIA Jim Brookes Australian Apprentice award, partnered by Stratco, celebrates the achievements of future tradespeople and recognises excellent trade knowledge, quality building work, and solid trade school results. The award was named after Jim Brookes, an avid supporter of young people and their training in the industry, who worked with James Hardie in supporting the HIA Training Foundation while it was active. - Rebecca Riddle

WIN! How To Please A Woman double passes Gina is not feeling fabulous. She has lost her job and feels stuck and frustrated in a passionless marriage. She has always lived life on the sidelines – that is, until she is met with the groundbreaking business opportunity of converting a team of well-built moving guys into wellbuilt housecleaners. But, as her business booms, her clientele demands something more – sex, or better yet, pleasure. Faced with something far more than she imagined, Gina and her team, including her foodie manager Steve, launch an enterprise that is all about getting intimacy right between people. For the fi rst time, the women experience desire on their own terms. As Gina faces the highs and lows, the joys and struggles of maintaining such a unique business, she learns to stand up for herself, to lookout for her own happiness and pleasure, and to take control of her life. How To Please A Woman is in cinemas from 19 May. Newcastle Weekly has 10 double passes to give away.

WIN! Rules of the Game DVDs In the picturesque English village of Wildemarsh, Detective Matilda Stone (Florence Hall, The Princess Switch movies) investigates crimes with the aid — or, often, meddling — of her three mystery-writing aunts, who raised her from childhood. Together, they inspect a murder at a health spa, a killing in the contemporary artworld, and the theft of an Edgar Allen Poe manuscript. Matilda has decidedly less success with her personal affairs, continuing to pine for Dr. Daniel Lynch (Andrew Leung, Cruella) even as she begins a new romance. But while Matilda’s love life hits a snag, she makes headway in the case of her mother’s long-ago disappearance—despite her aunts’ best efforts to conceal the secrets they hold about the case. Witty, whimsical, and “wickedly offbeat” (Parade), this contemporary mystery series also stars Julie Graham (Shetland), Siobhan Redmond (Unforgotten), and Sarah Woodward (Agatha Christie’s The Pale Horse), with Emmy®-nominated narration by Juliet Stevenson. Queens of Mystery Series 2 is out now on DVD. Newcastle Weekly has 10 copies to give away.

LOCKERS! I love them all but my favourite has to be The Skinny in Olive, I’ve always had a thing for old school lockers and the beautiful green is my idea of perfect! It’s pretty and practical in one!

BOOB MUG A nice warm cup of English Breakfast (milk no sugar please!) in my lovely mug made by local ceramicist Nicki from Two Squirrels Ceramics.

CUDDLES Morning cuddles with my kids and Jono piled into our bed. It’s always a little chaotic, noisy and full of love! I know these are the messy kind of moments that I’ll always treasure.

MY SISTER

My favourite things

Becca Stern Co-Founder of Mustard Made Becca is from London and has lived in sunny Newcastle for 10 years. She’s a mum to three boys and co-founded a colourful, boutique homewares brand, Mustard Made, with her sister in 2018. Becca loves the vibrant creative community in Newcastle and started her entrepreneurial journey at the local Olive Tree Market. These days you’ll find her in Mustard’s cute Islington office, at the ocean baths with her kids or hanging out at home making something (when she has a moment to herself). Becca sees her life as a balance of her desire for both adventure and spontaneity and the warm fuzzy feeling of ‘home’. “There’s joy to be had in the familiar but I always want to leave room for the unexpected too!” Having a business that operates globally leaves the door open for travel, new challenges and opportunities to push herself and grow.

Working with my sister Jess (and now our partners Jono and Marc) is one of my best life choices. It makes work so much more fun, more meaningful and has brought us closer even though we live on opposite sides of the world!

ANALOGUE PHOTOS My fridge is covered in polaroids and photobooth strips. I have a rule that whenever I see a photobooth, I have to get a photo with whoever I’m with. There’s something beautiful about capturing a moment in time in just one image.
