From the editor
The announcement that work would soon start on the Hexham Straight widening project was hailed by thousands of motorists earlier this month.
It is understood the development, transforming a six-kilometre section from two lanes to three in each direction, is slated to open in 2026, apparently improving the flow for 50,000 drivers daily.
And, while that sounds great in theory, a couple of important questions need to be asked.
Firstly, why has it taken so long to remedy?
That stretch of road’s been a nuisance for more years than I can remember, yet no government – state or federal, Labor or Liberal – saw a need to enhance it a couple of decades ago.
Every school holiday or long weekend break, Hexham is a driver and passenger’s nightmare, especially for those who live locally.
But, let’s be honest, this region’s a major ordeal for anyone behind a wheel.
Secondly, has anyone thought of the issues, which will surface when it is finished?
The three lanes are certain to merge back into two at some stage, causing further bottlenecks, just in a different location.
It seems the powers-that-be are just moving the problem a little to the left or right. Until next month, keep smiling.

Beatlemania heading to Newy
His array of hits, such as Hey Jude, Let It Be, Yesterday, Eleanor Rigby, Band on the Run, Silly Love Songs – to name just a handful, are legendary.
And, now, music icon Sir Paul McCartney is heading to Newcastle in 2023.
The Beatles’ main man will rock out McDonald Jones Stadium with his Got Back tour on Tuesday 24 October.
He’ll follow in the footsteps of Sir Elton John and Pink at the Hunter’s premier venue.
An 18-time Grammy Award winner, twotime Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, McCartney is one of the most successful and famous musicians of all time.
For the past six decades, as a solo artist and as a member of The Beatles, The Quarrymen and Wings, he has released the most No. 1 hits of all time.
Venues NSW CEO Kerrie Mather admitted it had been a transformational year for McDonald Jones Stadium.
“Venues NSW has worked incredibly hard over the past 12 months to ensure Newcastle becomes a regular stop on any
artist’s world tour,” she said.
“Following record-breaking Sir Elton John concerts earlier this year, we are delighted to have partnered with Frontier Touring and the City of Newcastle (CN) to secure global superstar Paul McCartney.
“He is an icon of world music – he’s

Hexham Straight project on track
It’s been a bugbear of every Hunter motorist for more years than anyone can care to remember.
But, with new federal and state governments in power, work has begun on the “congestion-busting” Hexham Straight project.
It will also ensure the 15-kilometre M1 Pacific Motorway extension to Raymond Terrace progresses to geotechnical drilling ahead of major construction later this year.
The news is certain to be welcomed by locals and visitors alike, who have borne the brunt of bottlenecks and traffic jams for decades.
With any luck, Hexham Straight will open in 2026 while the M1 Pacific Motorway extension to Raymond Terrace remains on track for 2028.
The combined project cost is $2.1 billion, with the Australian Government contributing $1.68 billion and the NSW Government chipping in $420 million.
Paterson MP Meryl Swanson, who’s long advocated for the enhancement, was thrilled with the latest development.
“The delivery of this [election] commitment on the Hexham Straight widening will improve the flow for 50,000 motorists every day,” she said.
“It’ll also provide a generational boost in employment across Newcastle, Port Stephens and the wider Hunter.
“This project will improve transport efficiencies, provide about 750 secure jobs over its life cycle. So, the start of construction will be hailed by every local.” •
Maitland LGA making its mark
Maitland is proving itself to be a hotbed for investors and homeowners, named the 2022/23 fastest growing regional area in NSW – yet again.
More than 1,180 development applications (DAs) were granted by Maitland City Council during the financial year, resulting in 1,147 new housing lots.
On average, DAs took just 27 days to approve – one of the fastest in NSW.
There were also more than $85 million of subdivision works by developers and council approval of subdivision that led to the release of more than 880 new land plots.
At present, there are an additional 800 lots under construction and 1,100 being prepared for construction, as well as 2,500 lots seeking DA approval.
“These figures and pipeline of future projects underscore the confidence felt in Maitland’s potential for sustained growth and economic prosperity,” says Maitland
City Council general manager Jeff Smith.
“We continue to be the fastest growing regional area in the state, which indicates interest from investors and homeowners who recognise Maitland’s potential as a great place to live.
“We’re committed to maintaining the balance between progress and preserving the character of our city through terrific

Ideally situated on the golf course with lake and fairway views, Shortland Waters offers an active and social lifestyle. Top Maitland citizen Todd Sheldon launches annual toy and gift drive
After handing over almost 25,000 items last year, Todd Sheldon believes the 2023 Susan Roskell Toy and Gift Drive could surpass that number.
Even before the much-loved initiative recently launched, donations began pouring in to provide presents to children impacted by the effects of family violence, homelessness, illness or injury throughout the Hunter and Central Coast on 25 December.
Already, the Bolwarra Heights resident’s garage is starting to look a bit like Santa’s workshop. But, Mr Sheldon doesn’t really mind since it’s all for a great cause, via a network of local charities – Maitland Region Community Support, The Backpack Venture, Early Links, Carrie’s Place and Got Your Back Sister, among others.
He, wife Penny and son Lachlan kickstarted the concept in 2016, however it was renamed after his late mother 18 months ago as a mark of respect to Ms Roskell and
what she’d put into the community.
“It’s amazing how much it’s grown since its inception,” he said. “However, we lost mum to pancreatic cancer in 2021.
“It had always been the plan to name it
after her… and she knew it. So, 2022 was the inaugural Susan Roskell Toy and Gift Drive.
“And, it was a massive success.
“We gave away between 20,000 and 25,000 toys and gifts.” •
Three decades on, Gleeso says the Jets have Nothing To Lose W
hen you think of Newy rock ‘n’ roll legends, Dave Gleeson and the boys from The Screaming Jets immediately spring to mind.
From their humble beginnings in the former steel city, back in 1989, they’ve been an enduring force in the Australian music landscape for more than three decades.
Before they had even signed their first record deal, the Jets had already clocked up in excess of 200 “live” shows, won the Triple J Battle of the Bands competition and established themselves as an onstage, noholds barred, powerhouse.
Their No 2 smash Better then introduced them to the world.
And, now in 2023, not much has changed.
Gleeson and the lads – Paul Woseen (bass), Jimi Hocking (guitar), Scott Kingman (guitar) and Cameron McGlinchey (drums) – are still on the road with The Rock Vault Encore Tour, the sequel to the band’s hugely-successful national odyssey celebrating the 30th anniversary of their ground-breaking debut All For One; and
they’ve just released a new single Nothing To Lose off the forthcoming album Professional Misconduct
“Our longevity is due to our love of the game, mate,” he said.
“If we didn’t love it, we would have stopped years ago.
“But, even though you have your ups and downs, it’s the best job in the world, hanging out with your mates, making music and records.
“We just love it.
“A little thing called COVID helped, too.
“I said to a lot of people ‘look, if you come out of the pandemic and haven’t got a bunch of songs written, you’re an idiot’.
“Because, we all had that downtime.
“However, the other side of that was making sure that you didn’t write songs only about being locked down.
“No one wants to hear it, we all know, we get it.
“So, it was a very productive period as far as getting stuff ready to come out and record.”
The success of All For One, and the footstomping Better, saw the Jets share the rostrum with the likes of Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and INXS to name a few.
They also released another nine studio albums (four of them Top 5 on the Australian ARIA charts); collected multiple gold and platinum records; and delivered classics such as Helping Hand, C’Mon, Shivers, Eve of Destruction, Shine On and many more.
Gleeson admitted even he was surprised to be rocking it out… in 2023.
“Who would have thought I’d still be here?” he said.
“To be honest, I didn’t think I’d be pumping out the first one [record].
“I never dreamed of it.
“As a young kid growing up in Cardiff, it was all football for me and my family.
“So, I kind of fell into it [music].
“Grant Walmsley (Jets founder) snagged me into a band after hearing me sing at Mass one day in Year 10.
“It’s bizarre… I never ever thought that I’d be in any kind of entertainment business.
“But, here we sit.” •

NW audience continues to grow exponentially
INTERVIEW & ARTICLE ROD THOMPSON
The Newcastle Weekly has enjoyed exponential growth over the past 12 months.
And, even though it’s been around since 2015, the hard-working staff is celebrating their true first birthday.
One year ago, Nicole and Ryan Shelley showed faith in the publication, turning it into a now 100% locally-owned, operated and produced periodical.
So, it’s a major milestone worth acknowledging.
“We’re excited by how far we’ve come in such a short space of time,” Nicole said.
“We relaunched the Newcastle Weekly with a fresh new look and feel; the quality of our magazine from paper to design and layout has undergone a dramatic transformation.
“The team also published our 10,000th article to our website, we successfully worked with City of Newcastle to deliver a marketing campaign promoting Darby Street, and we gave back to our community through a range of sponsorships and media partnerships.
“On top of that, we’ve signed on as a Google Showcase publisher, only the second in the region to make the cut.
“That defines us as a ‘news product’ and partners the Newcastle Weekly with some of the most respected local, regional and national publications.
“Plus, we’re the only source of free news without a paywall, written by our highlyexpert editorial team with 50+ years’ experience.
Nicole admitted one noticeable change was the visitation demographic to the website.
“77% of our visitors are now under the age of 55,” she said.
“They’re coming from across the region, LGAs such as Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Cessnock, Maitland and Port Stephens.
“In fact, our website visitors have increased by more than 500% in the past year.
“More and more Novocastrian are turning to us for their source of news, property, lifestyle, entertainment, sport and community stories.
“We also have the largest distribution of any free print magazines in the region; and print more copies than any of our competitors.
“As well, our pick-up rate is above 99%.
“Honestly, we sometimes cannot keep up with the demand for our magazines.
“So, a big thank you to our loyal and avid readers.”
Independent locally-focused media won’t continue without your support.
While we won’t ask you to pay a subscription fee, a like on our socials or signing up to our free daily email newsletter certainly helps.
Turn the page to see as we look back on a year of cover stories
“We are so much more than this magazine. The Newcastle Weekly publishes 6-to-10 articles to our website, with no paywall, each and every day.”
JESS FARCHIONE
When the Newcastle Weekly relaunched in 2022 under new ownership, the team wanted someone bright, bubbly and effervescent to lead its resurrection.
Many names were thrown up, however there was one which stood out.
In stepped Jess Farchione, one third of the hugely-successful Nick, Jess and Ducko breakfast trio on Newcastle radio station HIT106.9 and a popular Instagrammer in her own right.
COSTA GEORGIADIS
Despite regular visits to Lake Macquarie, gardening guru Costa Georgiadis wasn’t expected in the region until later in the year, when he’d be hosting the 2022 Smart Living Festival. To catch him for a photo, our team trekked down the M1 to capture him in his natural habitat –a garden, surrounded by chickens and vegies. Here the passionate environmentalist had everyone in fits of laughter.
REWILDING – WHAT EVEN IS THAT?
BRITTNEY SAUNDERS
When we first approached Brittney about being on the cover of our magazine, she was very humbled. The former You-Tuber who had amassed a whopping 1.03 million followers by posting honest piece-to-cameras throughout her teenage years, was now growing up and blossoming into a very successful businesswoman. Despite her online presence, many Novocastrians were meeting the FAYT label creator for the first time, while her league of followers flooded our site and socials with messages of undying adoration and support.
JORDAN LUCKY
His artwork can be found on walls across the region, but many Novocastrians only know Jordan Lucky as the man with the bun and a spray can.
We thought we’d change that, and Lucky became the face of our November edition, giving him a chance to share a snippet of his career, his love of colour, where he sees the future of street art and what Newcastle landmarks he’d love to transform if given the chance.
OLIVIA HIGGINS
In October, the city was abuzz after the Newcastle Knights’ NRLW side, coached by Ron Griffiths, captured its inaugural Telstra Women’s Premiership, defeating the Parramatta Eels. The girls were also presented the Key to the City by Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes in front of a thousand adoring fans. One member of that team was homegrown talent Olivia Higgins, a “late bloomer” in her own words, who played a starring role in the 32-12 romp. So, for our Christmas edition, the 30-year-old joined brothers, and Macquarie Scorpions legends Liam and Luke, for a photo shoot.
BRETT AND MATT
Well, what can I say, I was offered the opportunity to meet TravelGuide's Brett and Matt for an interview on a balmy January evening at a bar on Darby Street. Anyone who knows this pair or watches the popular television series, knows this was always going to involve a cocktail. And, so it did.
Our creative team captured both the colour and pizazz of these two loveable characters, who then became even more embraced by our readers, many learning for the first time that they were one of us.
TIMBERLINA
Sydney WorldPride is colourful, fun and entertaining, so what better way to acknowledge it locally than throwing Newcastle’s own wonderful First Nations drag queen Timberlina on the front of February’s magazine? And, she didn’t let the team down. Larger than life, Timberlina – with her flowing pink hair and billowing white gown – stopped traffic on Darby Street as our photographer Peter Stoop captured her essence and energetic personality.
KATE HABERFIELD
By the time I left the New Lambton café where I’d met Kate for an hour-long interview, I hugged her goodbye like an old friend - such is the likeability of the former NBN sports journalist.
Wrapping up a 14-year career on television, Kate was pursuing a role in communications, a decision based on a desire to find a better work-life balance.
After she’d welcomed our creative team into her home with open arms, it seemed only befitting to call her ‘Our Kate’.
MITCH REVS
Many Novocastrians know artist Mitch Revs by his cheeky caricatures and colourful beach scenes, each telling a story about life by the ocean in Newcastle.
When we heard Mitch was opening a new store at The Junction we took a sneak peek inside before it officially opened the next day, photographing Mitch as tradies added the final touches and his gallery team hung artworks.
ANDY ALLEN
Life has a way of throwing us curveballs and that’s exactly what happened with our next cover – Andy Allen.
Hoping to celebrate the recent success of our very own, down-to-earth Maitland boy, we had no idea that just 12 days after meeting Andy and his family for a photoshoot at Soldiers Point, he’d be mourning the loss of good mate and fellow MasterChef Australia judge Jock Zonfrillo, sadly the same day Andy celebrated his 35th birthday.

LAUREN FREESTONE
Quietly spoken, Lauren is a proud Wiradjuri - Gumbaynggirr woman currently living on Awabakal land, finding daily inspiration from the bush outside her door.
Lauren’s cover image offered readers a softness and femininity as well as a contemporary way to view Indigenous art, timed to appear on stands during national NAIDOC Week celebrations.

Sour cream coffee cake
Ingredients
3/4 cup butter, room temperature
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
3 cage-free large eggs, room temperature
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup light sour cream
For the brown sugar swirl:
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon cinnamon
For the Streusel:
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1/2 cup walnuts, chopped
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup butter, room temperature
Method
Preheat oven to 180°C. Line a tube pan with baking paper on the bottom, then grease the sides with butter. Set aside.
In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugars together until light and fluffy. Add in the eggs and vanilla extract.
In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt, whisking to combine. Slowly alternate folding in the flour mixture and the low-fat sour cream into the wet ingredients until everything is combined.
To make the streusel, place the walnuts, cinnamon, flour, salt and sugar in a food processor and pulse until the walnuts look well chopped. Pulse in the butter until just combined.
To make the brown sugar swirl mixture, combine the brown sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl. Stir to combine and set aside. Pour half of the batter into the tube pan, then sprinkle with brown sugar mixture. Pour in the rest of the batter, then top with the streusel. You’ll want to squeeze the streusel into your hands, making it dense like wet sand, then sprinkle it over the batter. Bake for 50 minutes, then allow to cool slightly before removing from pan.

Mitchell Hughes signs off after two decades of NBN sports tales
He can prattle off numbers like any sports-crazed fan, but now the only number that matters to NBN sports journalist Mitchell Hughes is the number three.
That’s the age of his twin boys, Harrison and Harvey.
It’s also the date in August that the popular face of local sports read his final sports update on the evening news, and the number of extra hours each day he hopes to be spending with his family now he has taken on a new role.
The boy from Kotara South is stepping away after 24 years with the broadcaster.
Born at ‘The Mater’, a graduate of University of Newcastle, Mitch, the quintessential Novocastrian, is not travelling too far away, however.
In a few weeks he’ll take up a new media advisor role at City of Newcastle.
The move, he says, is for his family.
“The boys were born the first month of COVID,” Mitch says.
“We were literally walking into the hospital, and they were putting signs up saying, ‘no
visitors, masks must be worn by everybody’.
“I remember thinking, oh, this will be around for a month or two.”
Mitch and his wife Laura were thrust into first-time parenting, with twins, and little hands-on support.
At the same time, his dad was diagnosed with bone marrow cancer, limiting his mum’s visits for fear of immunocompromise.
"My parents didn't meet my kids for six weeks after they were born, and they were only living at Wallsend at the time.”
Mitch’s dad sadly passed away in 2021, not long after he’d first met Harvey and Harrison.
“It still makes me cry now just because my dad and his dad were two of my best mates, and both of them being gone when I became a dad was really hard.”
That’s when he fully appreciated the value of family time.
Now he has made a career
change, Mitch hopes to leave behind a legacy of telling sports stories beyond the statistics.
“The best thing is having had a chance to watch them (sports stars) from their beginnings," he says.
“I've just loved telling their stories.” And, being told he made sport for everybody was the greatest compliment he received in the 24 years.
“I certainly didn't start or fuel the revolution, but I’m proud to think I was part of it.
“My favourite thing is just knowing that I've helped.” •

Longer days and warmer nights signal the start of spring and the outdoor entertaining season, and while our green spaces may be feeling a little neglected of lately, it's not too late to give them a little love to help them shine all summer long.
Although you might be forgiven for thinking weeds are the only green thing growing well in your garden right now, don’t fret, the hardy pests may have been finding their feet in your space all winter long, but now it's time for them to go, along with any crops that have seen better days.
perfect time to plan out your vegie beds. Consider planting herbs, as they make excellent companion plants for your crops, as well as a delicious garnish for meals and summer cocktails. For tomatoes, start sowing seeds indoors, ready for transplanting outside once the weather warms up.
LAWN CARE
Winter lawns can become infested with Bindi and now is the time to treat.
Just as you’re swapping out your winter wardrobe for lighter clothing, so too are your plants craving a refresh.
Gather your gardening tools, it’s time to get your hands dirty.
Here’s our top tips to help get your garden in its best shape by spring.
PREP YOUR BEDS
Start by clearing out any pesky weeds and old crops from the garden beds. Prepare the soil by incorporating highquality compost, providing a nutrient-rich foundation for your plants.
Rake up fallen leaf litter and utilise as mulch in the garden beds, or add it to your compost pile for a sustainable approach.
While it might still be a little early to plant spring and summer vegetables, this is a
Top dress and fertilise lawn at the start of spring to help boost growth and carry you through the summer months. Remember to wait at least two days after mowing before applying fertiliser to avoid any potential damage.
GENERAL MAINTANANCE
Ensure your gardening tools are in top-tip condition for spring planting by inspecting them for rust and sharpening as needed.
Late winter is the ideal time to prune deciduous trees while they are still dormant. This will help encourage new growth once the weather warms up.
Take care of your indoor plants by repotting them with quality indoor potting mix. Add water with seaweed tonic to prevent transplant shock. This is also a great time to inspect your plants for pests. Check under leaves and at the base of stems, removing any diseased or infected foliage and treat as needed. •
Repot, resoil, refresh, your plants are craving a restart for spring.
Suburb Profile: New Lambton
Postcode: 2305
LGA: Newcastle
The people fortunate enough to call New Lambton home are a very patriotic bunch.
If you ask them, they will very proudly list all the reasons why their suburb is one of the best in the region.
Parks, shopping, a sports stadium, doctors, health practitioners, walking tracks, a nature reserve, and schools that are the envy of neighbouring postcodes.
It also boasts 29 parks that cover almost 40% of its total land area.
For Lisa Macklin Property director Lisa Macklin, New Lambton is more like a village than an address.
“People move in and around New Lambton, but very rarely do they leave,” she says.
After her husband had spent a lifetime in the suburb, this is where the pair chose to raise their own son, and ironically this is also where he resides with his own family.
"New Lambton is such a family-friendly suburb, it honestly is a wonderful place to live.”
SUBURB SNAPSHOT
New Lambton is a hive of activity most days, with the suburb’s 11,000 residents popping in and out of the main shopping precinct at various times of the day.
From beauty, books, coffees and groceries, to fish and chips, pubs and homewares, the postcode services the community both within and outside its 5.5km radius.
The former coal mining township stretches from its 450-acre nature reserve on one side to its 30,000-capacity international sports centre on the other.
Five steps to buying your first home
Congratulations, your pre-approval is in place and your offer has been accepted on your dream home. So, what’s next? Well, this is where the fun begins - or the stress if you’re not prepared, warns Curtis & Blair's Jane Blair, director and principal.
STEP 1 – YOUR OFFER HAS BEEN ACCEPTED
It’s time to send the required details to your real estate agent and advise your bank or broker that your offer has been accepted. The real estate agent will send a sales advice to the vendor’s solicitor and your solicitor outlining the sale price, contact details and conditions of sale.
STEP 2 – DEPOSIT AND REPORTS
It’s at this time the agent will ask for a deposit – generally an initial .25% deposit so that contracts can be exchanged with a
cooling off period, allowing you time to do pest and building reports, and for the bank to do a valuation so formal approval can be obtained. This also prevents anyone else from offering on the property once contracts are exchanged, however, you should be aware that if the sale does not proceed from here the .25% is not refundable. Sometimes, due to time frames your conveyancer/solicitor may seek a 10-day cooling off period to make sure there is time to complete all of the necessary due diligence.
STEP 3 - WHAT HAPPENS IF THERE ARE ISSUES?
If you’re not happy with the pest and building report, there are two options –you can either ask the seller to fix the issues or you may ask for a reduction to fix the issues yourself.
If there’s an issue with finance and you are unable to obtain formal approval you must notify your agent immediately. You will also lose the 25% deposit that you paid.
Once you’re happy with all the reports and your bank has advised you have formal
lending approval, you must pay the balance of the 10% deposit before the cooling off period ends.
STEP 4 – POP THE CHAMPAGNE
You have unconditionally exchanged contracts. On exchange of contracts your solicitor/conveyancer will advise a settlement date.
STEP 5 – FINAL INSPECTION
Just prior to settlement you should contact your agent to arrange a pre-settlement inspection. This is a final inspection to make sure all inclusions that were noted on the contract remain at the house and that everything is in working order as it was when you inspected the property. It is also a good time to make sure any rubbish etc has been removed from the property.
On the big day, your real estate agent will advise when settlement has taken place and the keys will then be released to you. Congratulations you now own a home! •

Newy ref only Aussie in role at 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup
When the first whistle sounds, signalling the start of the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup later this month, there’ll be more than 32 different accents on the courts that span five host cities, across 17 days.
When it comes to calling the shots however, there will be just one with an Aussie twang – Newcastle Basketball’s Scott Beker.

The 31 July announcement added to his already impressive score sheet.
Last year he represented his hometown at the 2022 Tokyo Games.
At the time, he had refereed more than 300 National Basketball League (NBL) games, a string of World Cups, University Games and the 2016 Rio Olympics.

As yet, he has not been told which games he’ll be refereeing at the competition that runs from 25 August to 10 September.
“We don’t know which games or how many until the competition starts,” Beker said.
“And, then it’s all performance based from there.”
The 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup is the 19th tournament for men’s national basketball teams.
This event will be the first World Cup to be hosted in Indonesia, and the second to be staged in both the Philippines and Japan with both having first hosted the tournament in 1978 and 2006, respectively.
