Many people were sceptical when Labor promised $55 million for the upgrade of international terminal facilities at Newcastle Airport before the federal election. But, to its credit, the party has delivered on that vow.

There’s no doubt, Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens, Maitland and the greater Hunter are vital components to any future economic plans of either the NSW or Australian governments. So, a huge investment was clearly required to enhance our potential global gateway to the region.

The work, officially recognised by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at Williamtown earlier this month, will increase the capacity, efficiency and effectiveness of universal passenger and broader processing at Newcastle Airport. So, in effect, it’s set to bolster air transport links and connectivity opportunities for the Hunter.

And, given the current state of affairs, that can only be a good thing for everyone, with the project supporting substantial employment and fiscal stimulus during and after construction.

By attracting international visitors, it will generate significant benefits for local and regional tourism, as well as the trade sector, too.

Congratulations to the federal MPs who advocated on behalf of the Hunter, namely Meryl Swanson, Sharon Claydon and Pat Conroy.

Until next month, keep smiling.

Newcastle’s own clinical trial centre

Every new medication/treatment has to pass through a series of clinical trials, a process which can take several years, before it can be approved for wider use.

By volunteering for a trial, you have the opportunity to access cutting edge treatment not otherwise available, while also helping to improve future treatment options.

Our ethically approved clinical trials are run by a dedicated team of doctors and nurses. We provide comprehensive medical care throughout the trial at no cost to you.

291 King Street, Newcastle –more than just an address

At its core it's about change, and changing for the better, just like the former steel city itself. King Street, like much the rest of Newcastle, is transforming and 291 King Street is taking a leading role in that transformation.

into a vibrant, culturally-diverse destination, 291 King Street has also transformed from its origins of a carpark purchased by Nicholson some nine years ago.

“Our serviced apartments will serve as a base for visitors to immerse themselves in the local culture, experience the city’s attractions, and engage with the thriving music and hospitality scene," he said.

"We have worked hard to create a storytelling experience for guests.

"The history of Newcastle is celebrated, and special places of interest are showcased along the hallway and within apartments.”

Boasting a 24-hour gym with sauna and unique outdoor training space, premium child learning facility, café, serviced apartments and commercial space, this comprehensive range of offerings reflects the vision held by Nicholson and his team.

They are driven by a passion to bring about positive change to how people live, work and play in Newcastle.

As the city undergoes its own makeover

The transformation of 291 King Street symbolises the collective effort to shape Newcastle into a destination that celebrates its past while embracing the present.

It is a testament to the dedication and passion of Nicholson's team, who recognised the potential of the space and sought to create an experience that encompasses the essence of Newcastle’s history and contemporary vibrancy. FIFA World Cup fever hits Hunter

The Lower Hunter is set to embrace “footy fever” this month when the Matildas kick off their 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign.

Maitland will host open air broadcasts of the Australian team, featuring Novocastrians Emily Van Egmond and Clare Wheeler, in every game at No.1 Sportsground, starting from Thursday 20 July at 8pm.

The Matildas tackle Republic of Ireland in their first match

The Tony Gustavsson-coached outfit tackles Republic of Ireland that evening. Fixtures against Nigeria (Thursday 27 July) and Canada (Monday 31 July) are also scheduled to be aired at the venue, both at 8pm.

Newcastle’s Civic precinct will also turn green and gold, too, with outdoor screenings of Australia’s campaign in Wheeler Place.

Thousands of football fans are expected to converge on the location to cheer on the Matildas in their maiden outing (20 July).

The “live” site will be set up next to Civic Theatre from 7pm for each of the side’s matches during the group stage, including Nigeria (27 July) and Canada (31 July). •

Newcastle Legacy launches its Hunter backyard blitz program

Newcastle Legacy has brought together corporate sponsors, veteran groups and the wider community to support some of their local beneficiaries after it launched the Backyard Assist program in the Hunter.

The initiative, supported by Kennards Hire, was established to help residents who are no longer able to maintain their yards.

The volunteers provide attention to a selected area in a unique backyard blitz, bringing it back to life.

Newcastle Legacy will then work with that beneficiary to ensure they receive ongoing assistance from the relevant veteran services to keep the yard maintained into the future.

“We're helping families, especially those who are elderly and isolated, by providing a safe and accessible environment,” Kelly Brumester said. “It’s a program that truly embodies the Legacy promise to ‘look after the missus and kids’.”

Newcastle Legacy’s goal for 2023 is to finish five backyards between now and November.

And, with the community’s ongoing support, it is hoped to double that amount in

Hunter Melanoma Foundation leads way to sun safe workplace

With Australia having the highest rates of melanoma in the world, the need for increased sun protection and education on early detection is paramount.

For individuals spending long hours under the sun this risk is only heightened, but what if there was a program to help employers lead the way to a sun safe workplace?

Well thanks to the Hunter Melanoma Foundation (HMF), there is.

The Sunsafe Workplace Awareness Program (SWAP) aims to offer employers and their workers, who spend majority of their time outdoors, the tools and education to better protect themselves when outside.

By undertaking this training, employers can demonstrate their commitment to employee health and wellbeing while making a tangible impact in reducing the incidence of melanoma and other skin cancers.

LEADING THE WAY THROUGH EDUCATION

Through SWAP, HMF equips workplaces with comprehensive resources and training through an online portal.

The interactive training encourages employees to understand the risks associated with prolonged sun exposure, detect early warning signs of suspicious or new sports, and

adopt proactive sun protective measures. By arming employees with this vital knowledge, the program enables individuals to make informed decisions about their own health and wellbeing.

CULTIVATING A SUNSMART WORKPLACE

Beyond education, SWAP actively cultivates a culture of sun safety within workplaces, this includes supporting employees to wear protective clothing, apply sunscreen regularly, seek shade during peak UV hours, and take other preventive measures such as annual skin checks both at work and in their personal lives.

HMF understands that sustainable change requires more than short-term efforts.

SWAP is an invaluable program that aims to make long-term changes within outdoor workplaces.

To find out more about how to be involved with SWAP, visit hmf.org.au/our-programs/ swap-sun-safe-workplace-awarenessprogram, or contact HMF executive officer Claudia Tolhurst on claudia@hmf.org.au or phone 0412 955 934.

Sunsafe Workplace Awareness Program is proudly sponsored by the NSW Government.

Inclusivity, diversity celebrated at Golden Pineapple Awards

Creative elder engagement specialist Maurie Voisey-Barlin walked away with the top gong at the recent Golden Pineapple Awards at Newcastle NEX.

In front of a sold-out crowd, the popular Hunter “window therapist”, who pioneered an innovative way to entertain aged care residents during COVID-19, was named Person of the Year.

Other winners at the Hunter Diversity & Inclusion Collective (HDIC) event included Clear Sky Australia, muchloved Novocastrian Craig Hamilton, Leah Flanagan, Got Your Back Sister, Newcastle Pride and legendary Australian band Midnight Oil. Honorary awards were also presented to Soul Hub’s Sue Prosser and Kia Handley, from ABC Radio.

HDIC chairperson Bill Armstrong described the night as “wonderful”.

“We hosted 350 guests… and a great time was had by all,” he said.

“The Golden Pineapples are as much a celebration of diversity in the arts community in the region as it is an awards ceremony.

“And, it covers the greater Hunter, all 14 Local Government Areas (LGAs).

“While the purpose of the HDIC is to enable more equity and inclusion in the workplace, the function is a chance to recognise outstanding achievements and employers who support that message." •

Scott's paddling into another adventure… and a new book

Adecade since he paddled the defining river of his home region for the acclaimed book, The Hunter, writer Scott Bevan is at it again.

He’s once more kayaked the waterway he knows so well for another adventure in words.

And, his new offering, Return To The Hunter, was launched by his friend and kayaking buddy, Australian film director Bruce Beresford, on the banks of the river in Maitland this week.

So, how did it all come about?

The legendary journalist explains. In the midst of COVID in 2021, I and my longsuffering kayak, Pulbah Raider, journeyed once more down the Hunter River, from Belltrees, near the foothills of the Barrington Tops, to Newcastle.

I wanted to see how much the river had changed in the 10 years since I paddled it for The Hunter.

And, in marking changes along the river, I knew I’d also be catching up with friends of the Hunter, people who helped me and spoke with me during my first journey.

In the process of this paddle, I figured I’d also see how much I’d changed in the previous decade.

One thing that had changed, for sure, is

that the paddling hurt a lot more.

It gave me the impression - almostthat perhaps I’ve aged.

But, I turned water, and sore muscles, into words.

The paddling and the writing were pushed along by a desire to reprint the account of my 2011 journey and observations of the region where I grew up, the Hunter.

That book had gone out of print, so I was keen to make that story available once more, as readers kept asking for it.

However, rather than just reprint The Hunter, I decided to re-paddle the Hunter.

I was aware of the saying of the ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus that you can’t step twice into the same river.

But, wisdom so often eludes me.

So, I stepped back into the river.

And, when I step into this river that means so much to me, and is so much a part of me, I have to write about it.

As a result, I published Return To The Hunter.

The latest offering is effectively two stories in one.

The Hunter has been reprinted in full… and I’ve written about my 2021 journey down the river, calling that section The Return.

I was so grateful when so many people journeyed with me down the river in The Hunter.

So, I hope they don’t mind me stepping twice into the same river and going on this new journey in words with me.

It’s the same river, but it’s not.

So much has changed for me. So, it’s a different journey. And a new adventure.

To have Bruce launch Return To The Hunter with me is special.

He’s not only told some of this nation’s best-known stories in film from The Adventures of Barry McKenzie and Breaker Morant to Mao's Last Dancer and Ladies in Black, he’s also been at the helm of some landmark Hollywood films.

Driving Miss Daisy, with Morgan Freeman and Jessica Tandy, won four Oscars, including Best Picture.

So, Bruce is not just a gifted storyteller, he is a dear and beautiful friend.

I consider him my mentor.

Off the water, that is.

On the water, he’s a kayaking buddy. A very cheeky kayaking buddy. •

LISA

There are those among us who were born to march to the beat of their own drum. There are some who prefer to dance. And then there are those who dance, and drum, and do it all while wearing bright red lipstick.

Lisa McGuigan is one of these people. Her favourite quote, by Oscar Wilde, finds no fear in being talked about. She is comfortable surrounding herself with the colour black, and it's not because she believes she’s a vampire, although she openly admits she’s not a morning person.

The challenge, it seems, for those who choose to surround themselves with Lisa McGuigan is simply keeping up with her energy.

The Hunter Valley winemaker has always had a unique take on the world around her.

Following in the footsteps of her father Brian, grandfather Perc and greatgrandfather Owen, Lisa has always been forging her own path in the industry.

“I wanted to become the first woman to be a manager at a five-star hotel,” she says.

After a long and successful hospitality career and studies in hotel management, she successfully became head wine buyer at a prestigious five-star hotel, before returning to her roots in the Hunter Valley.

Now she is the face behind Vamp – a Pokolbin-based cellar door with a distinct rebelliously black take on an industry she is passionate about.

Here she is queen bee in a setting as unique as her character.

"It took a bit of time for me to join the industry. I did a few various things and I can't even remember, but I had learned a lot about wine growing up," she said.

“My dad was based here, and he was always working in the winery, so I'd be there with him, and things became familiar to me because I'd hear it spoken about. It wasn't something new, it was something that I must have been soaking up.”

A lot of the lessons she says she learned from one of her favourite brands – Penfolds.

“In the Hunter, the vines that were the most established were varietals that were known for growing well in this type of soil and this temperature,” she explains.

“Pinot Noir won’t grow here because it’ll ripen too quickly, and it won't have the tannin that you need. It needs to ripen slowly; it needs a cooler climate.

“It's like you can't grow bananas everywhere, you need a warm climate. If you grew them in a cooler climate, they’d probably be too bitter.

“It’s the same with grapes. The Hunter is one of the warmer regions.”

“And, so that's why Penfolds have amazing wines, they've been blending their grapes. They worked out over time the best way to put these wines together, and they've put us

Lisa McGuigan at her Pokolbin-based Vamp.

on the map, the whole of Australia, for wine.

“If you plant the vines and then you realise that, oh, 'that doesn't grow very well in this climate', well, someone has to work that out and then pull them out. Then over time it becomes general knowledge about what grows well here and there and there.”

Wine became instinctual to her.

In the mid-1990's Lisa had the idea to launch a new wine brand and destination cellar door, one which would ultimately become one of Australia’s most successful and recognisable wine brands – Tempus Two. By the time the brand turned 10 in 2007 it had sold more than 100,000 cases globally annually.

The same year she decided to take a new direction, investing in a new venture, a retail wine business called Lisa’s Wine Vault, which she successfully ran for more than five years.

Then in 2010 Lisa’s passion for wine was reignited and Lisa McGuigan Wines was born.

The brand is a culmination of her experience and a new zest for creating on her own terms.

Less than 12 months before a global pandemic would shock the planet, Lisa opened the doors to Vamp, a dream she says she’d held for longer than a decade.

Within the walls of this unique space, she has created a cathedral for her creativity, a blend of both her love of wine, fashion and design, as well as her commitment to five-star hospitality.

Vamp stocks Lisa McGuigan’s Silver Collection for “everyday drinking”, The Platinum Collection and a Renaissance Collection.

“It’s such a nice day outside...I think I’ll wear black.”

“Renaissance in Latin means rebirth,” she told Newcastle Weekly

“This is my most ‘out there’ range, named because it includes varietals I previously would not have touched given their difference, and the extreme attention required in the winery.

“This is my Renaissance period –a great new direction and inspiration.”

Why ‘Vamp’?

Did you know that a Vamp is a seductress, or femme fatale? I chose the name because I didn’t want it to be named after me, you know, so many people use their name, I had to be a bit different. And also, I thought ‘what about in the future when someone else takes over? They don’t want to be Lisa McGuigan Wines’, and in the middle of the night it came to me – ‘Vamp'.

Where do you take your inspiration from?

From Madonna. I’ve always been a huge

Madonna fan, back when she was truly being herself. You know, she was creative, and innovative and trusted her instincts.

I’d probably have to say Abba as well, and Marcia Hines.

Can you describe your style in five words?

Noir, Noir, Rouge, Noir, Noir. Is that five? I thought I’d break up the black with a bit of red, did that work?

Do you have any favourite sayings?

I have a few.

“There is only one thing worse than being talked about...That is not being talked about.” - Oscar Wilde.

“Always do sober what you said you’d do drunk. That will teach you to keep your mouth shut.” - Ernest Hemingway.

“It’s such a nice day outside...I think I’ll wear black.” - Lisa McGuigan.

(Incidentally, all these quotes feature on the walls of Vamp).

Tell us your five favourite things:

1. My Border Collie ‘Maggie’, and she sits at number one.

2. Stationery. Oh, I’ve always loved stationery. I love the texture, the thickness, I love to paint, and I guess I’m oldfashioned in that I love a hand-written note. I think my brain works better when I’m writing things down on paper, too.

3. The colour orange. I’m pretty sure that before there was black, there was orange.

4. Fashion. As a kid I used to wear my grandfather’s shirts back to front, just to experiment with fashion. I’ve always wanted to play around with fashion, and wine is fashion. It can be as significant as fashion is. What you like in a wine you will grow out of as your tastes change, and it’s the same for fashion.

5. Metal. I'm like a magpie, I love shiny things. What first drew me to this block (where Vamp is located on Broke Road, Pokolbin) was the metal structure at the front, at the roadside, which by the way often has a magpie sitting on it. We also host a sculpture trail with lots of metal sculptures and the cellar door is full of metal features, I just love it. •

MELANIE & JAMES

Set on the rolling hills of Mount View on the fringes of the Hunter wine region, this rustic, boho elopement was everything Melanie and James had hoped for. From the native bouquets to the earthy tones of the guests’ outfits and the simple ceremony, each choice accentuated the country feel the bride, groom and their 20 guests were after. Intimate and warm. A year in the making, Melanie says she will always remember this day fondly.

New opportunities for first home buyers

The real estate market has always been a buy and sell, supply and demand industry, and, as some investors in the Hunter are pulling their properties from the landscape, movement is making property a viable option for a new type of investor.

5 TIMMINS STREET, BIRMINGHAM GARDENS 2287

Cross-checking her weekend home open list, New Lambton-based real estate agent Lisa Macklin says she can’t help but notice a distinct change in her clientele.

Investors, she says, are saturating the sellers lists, engaging a new type of buyer.

While long-term investors remain, some who have purchased in recent years are jumping ship to pour their money elsewhere, Macklin says the move is opening up doors for other buyers.

First home buyers with simpler requirements are finding the perfect place to start, new investors are also finding a space to pool their energies.

“Of the seven open homes booked for this weekend, five are midterm investors getting out of the market,” Lisa told Newcastle Weekly

“We have those who have bought their second home a few years ago and upsized, opting to retain their initial first home as an investment property. Increasing rates are seeing these investors exit the rental market because the interest rate hikes have pushed them too far, and we’re also seeing mid-to-short term investors who entered the market in recent years, decide it's time for them to get out.”

The change is, in some cases, producing happy buyers.

A property in the growing suburb of Birmingham Gardens is one example.

The three-bedroom, two-bathroom home is on the market at

an affordable price point of $840,000.

It has caught the eye of a young family who have been living with other relatives, waiting for the right opportunity

“On the one hand, this is a great place to start a property journey or invest, but on the other I have such genuine concerns for tenants and the affordability housing crisis.”

Interior designer elevates Louth Park home to record-breaking sale

Renowned interior designer Amanda Beckmann has left her mark on Louth Park's property market after her transformative vision produced a stunning home in coveted Hillview estate.

25 CORDEAUX STREET, LOUTH PARK 2320

Within days of being listed, this high-end home, boasting magazinequality aesthetics, achieved a record-breaking sale, setting a new standard for sophisticated family living.

Marble tiling, herringbone floors, brass fixtures, and a crisp palette were just a few of the exceptional features that contributed to the sale of this remarkable property at an unprecedented price of $1.7 million.

The meticulous attention to detail showcased throughout the home captivated potential buyers from the moment it hit the market.

Under the creative guidance of Amanda Beckmann, founder of Coco Lane Interior Design, the home on Cordeaux Street emerged as a masterpiece that surpassed all expectations.

Beckmann's expertise and innovative design choices, as well as her landscaping, transformed the property into a true gem within the sought-after estate.

Reflecting on the project, Beckmann shared, "From the moment I first laid eyes on the land, I knew it had incredible potential. My design brief was to create a luxurious and timeless space that would resonate with refined family living."

She continued, "My favourite features of the home include the engineered flooring, harmonious blend of textures, the seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces, and the carefully curated elements that exude elegance and sophistication.

“By adhering to my six-step approach, I ensured maximum appeal and created a living environment that truly resonated with buyers."

Even after the property sold, Beckmann's design continued to captivate the community, with many expressing regret at not having the opportunity to call this masterpiece their own.

Former Hunter Water base to become a vibrant CBD precinct

Alarge piece of land in the heart of Newcastle’s CBD has been listed for sale.

Formerly the home of Hunter Water, City Exchange now offers the potential for multi-sector development, having already become the first Australian site named in a Community Title scheme.

Located in Newcastle’s West End, the address comprises 426 King Street and 591615 Hunter Street.

Refurbished and sub-divided by McCloy Group in 2010, it is now owned by Eagle Property Group.

The site spans 6,483 square metres.

The sale of the site has been appointed to JLL’s James Aroney, Mitch Noonan, and Kate Low together with Commercial Collective’s Matt Kearney and Adam Leacy

via an international Expressions of Interest campaign.

The City Exchange Site has the capacity to accommodate possibilities that include office spaces, build-to-rent (BTR) properties, medical facilities, hotels, residential units, and associated retail establishments.

“This offering marks only the third time in the past decade that a CBD site of this scale with redevelopment potential has become available on the market,” Mr Noonan said.

The site consists of five individual buildings spanning 7,000sqm.

It underwent significant refurbishment in 2010 and now provides a stable revenue stream from a diverse tenant mix.

Featuring dual frontages on Hunter and King streets, the site provides convenient access to retail, public amenities, and transportation infrastructure.

“Newcastle’s growth trajectory, driven by a growing white-collar workforce and investment in education and medical facilities, makes this offering even more compelling. The ‘City Exchange’ site is poised to become a vibrant precinct and contribute to the city’s continued development,” Mr Kearney said. •

Visit dog-friendly beaches in our region

It might be cold outside, but the four-legged members of your family still need to stretch their limbs and test their sniffing skills. So, grab the leash and a poop-bag and let’s go and explore some of the Hunter’s best spots for beach walkies.

LAKE MACQUARIE

Blacksmiths Beach Awabakal Avenue, Blacksmiths. Dogs can run free of leashes at this popular stretch of Nine Mile Beach all year round. Entry is via the beach car park off Awabakal Avenue, northerly to the Belmont Golf Club boundary.

Hams Beach Located on the southern side of Swansea Heads, north of Caves Beach. Access to this dog-friendly quiet beach is via Mawson Close.

Booragul Foreshore Reserve Again, it’s not a beach, but it does sit on the water's edge. Around the bend from popular Warners Bay, this lakeside reserve offers space to run and jump small waves.

Redhead Beach One of the most popular dog-friendly beaches in the region offering miles of sand and big waves for brave canines to explore. Just remember dogs are only permitted from First Creek heading south, and anywhere along Nine Mile Beach.

NEWCASTLE

Stockton Beach It might be small but that makes it one of the quieter dog beaches in Newcastle, perhaps better suited to the ‘mini’ pooches among us.

Horseshoe Beach When it comes to off-leash play, this beach is a favourite for dogs and their owners. Located close to the heart of the city, between beach and harbour, Horseshoe is perfect for pets all year round.

King Edward Park Coming under the sub-heading of ‘parks with beach views’ this iconic Newcastle landmark offers off-leash play and plenty of space to run, all with a magnificent backdrop, ocean breezes and shady trees, a playground and barbecues. Dixon Park Reserve If you want beach views without the sand, here’s another option close to the beach but not on it.

Merewether’s Dixon Park is a great spot for people-watching too.

Carrington A great option if you’re looking for shallow waters, limited sand, a grassed area and no need for a leash.

PORT STEPHENS

Bagnalls Beach Located in Corlette, Bagnalls Beach is one of the best ‘beginner’ beaches for pooches, with dogs able to wade and explore the salt water at low tide safely.

Shoal Bay Beach accessible all year round for off-leash walking and swimming.

Boat Harbour - Dogs welcome off-leash on the beach from May to September and on the beach between 5pm and 9am on-lead between October and April.

Birubi Beach A stunning beach allowing pets the opportunity to explore on or offleash at different times of the day and year (check signage).

Tomaree Penninsula Salamander Bay, off Foreshore Drive and Soldiers Point Road are both beach areas offering on-lead space for your pooch to explore.

Mallibula Part of Tanilba Bay, Mallibula offers off-leash space for dogs to run free.

Kooindah Park - is completely off-leash all day. Located adjacent to Henderson Park which boasts an impressive children’s playground and swimming beach.

"That makes his performance [at nationals] even more incredible."

“So, we’ve had to really manage his workload and his training load, as well as his progression back into full competition.

“There was a period of time where he could only do two, three or four instead of all six (apparatus).

“In fact, as of December, Josh was still participating in just four and we weren’t sure if he’d be able to go through into this year’s competition season.

“But, we managed to get him to state –and he performed well at all three events.

“Even though he wasn’t selected in the top six to represent NSW in teams, Josh qualified as an individual.

“So, that makes his performance [at nationals] even more incredible.

“He’s a fairly typical competitor who may not show a lot of stress or anxiety leading up to an event.

“However, he can switch it on when needed.

“These were all new routines for him; he had never competed before January, so he had to learn a whole style of gymnastics, so to speak.”

Kennedy said the 14-year-old felt a “bit overwhelmed” by the eventual outcome.

“I think Josh was really surprised,” he told the Newcastle Weekly.

Teen Josh vaults to an Australian title

Teenager Josh Thompson pushed a frustrating two years to the side to stun onlookers at the 2023 Australian Gymnastics Championships.

In his maiden season of the junior international level nine under-15 division, the Hunter Sports Centre athlete returned home from the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre with a national title in his grasp. It followed firsts in overall, floor exercise, pommel horse, parallel bars and horizontal

bar, as well as a third in rings and a fourth in vault.

He finished with a two-day total of 138.681 points to claim the honours.

Coach Rohan Kennedy said he was thrilled with Thompson’s success.

“We certainly didn’t plan for those results but pleased they happened,” he explained.

“Josh has been dealing with an (L4-L5 back) injury, which has prevented him from competing for the past 24 months.

“At the Australian Gymnastics Championships, they host days of competition, so he went in there with no expectations.

“We had a chat about what our goals were… and they were to make sure we hit all six apparatus, put up clean routines that were competitive, and just allow the results to fall wherever they did.

“On day one, he was in second place by 0.2 of a point.

“So, we knew he was in the mix heading into day two.

“The fact that he won and was able to do better than day one – by not only overtaking the lead but increasing it as well – was quite impressive.”

No matter what Thompson – and his mentor – decides, the future looks bright for the Port Stephens youngster. •

Eli’s football dreams receive a kick-a-long

Eli Gorton’s dream of playing in the UEFA Champions League is a little step closer after the football prodigy recently secured a scholarship to tour England.

In fact, the talented Lake Macquarie centre/midfielder has the world quite literally at his feet.

Within a short space of time, he’s attracted the attention of Australian legend Tim Cahill, ex-international superstar Dwight

“I started kicking a ball when I was three and my dad’s (Ryan) helped me along the way.

“Everything’s gone from there.”

The young gun plays for the Broadmeadow Magic in the Junior Development League (JDL) competition, up an age group in the under-11s, under the watchful eye of first grade coach John Bennis.

He’s also training with the Elite 11s squad in the Newcastle Jets Program and alongside highly-respected mentor Jobe Wheelhouse at the Jobe Wheelhouse Football Academy.

“Jobe is an exceptional coach,” father Ryan said.

“He has really helped Eli to take his game to the next level.”

Football Network (GFN) UK, which drew interest from GFN coaches from the United Kingdom and talent scouts from the English Premier League (EPL).

Hundreds of players, ranging from under-9s to under-17s, were on hand to showcase their skills.

Afterwards, a squad was chosen for the best 11 participants in each age group.

Then, out of all the trialists, the player who impressed the scouts the most would be offered a scholarship with the price of the tour to England covered.

And, that honour went to Eli.

“My whole body stopped when I heard the news,” he told the Newcastle Weekly.

“I just couldn’t believe it.

“I honestly wasn’t expecting it, I was so surprised.

“But, it will be a great experience.

“I’ll have the chance to learn so much over there.”

Yorke, F2Freestyler Billy Wingove and numerous A-League stars on his Instagram account.

Not bad for a nine-year-old.

“It’s a really good sport,” Eli said.

“Even though you have 10 team mates on the field, it’s virtually just you and the ball.

“That’s what I love.

As well, the youngster started training with the newly-established Newcastle Elite Football Academy (NEFA), run by exprofessionals Taylor Regan, Daniel McBreen, Roy O’Donovan and Ben McNamara.

However, it was an event in Sydney, which could potentially change Eli’s life.

He attended a three-day trial with Global

During the tour, from 21 October to 3 November, Eli will train and play against top EPL academies – Manchester City FC, Liverpool FC, Chelsea FC, Leicester City FC, Fullham FC, Sheffield United FC, Bolton Wanderers FC and Blackpool FC.

They’ll also attend three EPL matches and go on private stadium excursions. •
